Beaches contain the residue of eroded rocks which have resisted weathering, and it is common to find in all beaches some of the harder, heavy minerals. The natural sorting action of waves and winds tends to concentrate the heavy minerals into banded deposits.The value of such deposits is extremely variable. Even amongst the more concentrated deposits, the principal minerals, in the vast majority of cases, are magnetic, titaniferous magnetite and other forms of iron oxide, which, in the present state of mineral economics and technology, are of little or no value.Valuable minerals of fairly common occurrence in beach sand deposits are rutile, zircon, ilmenite, monazite and chromite, and each of these minerals, as well as others of less common occurrence, is obtained from beach deposits in various parts of the world.Along a stretch of 300 miles of coast from Coff's Harbour in New South Wales to North Stradbroke Island in Queensland, occur unique concentrations of heavy minerals. The principal minerals which occur are rutile, zircon and ilmenite, and for some years these deposits have contributed half to three-quarters of the world's consumption of rutile and zircon 1, ,2. The only other notable beach sand concentrations in Australia are at a number of places in the southwest of Western Australia, where deposits containing highgrade ilmenite are being developed.

The quality of Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS) at Skorpion Zinc is of utmost importance for efficient operation of the Solvent Extraction (SX) Plant. Suspended solids in the PLS forms CRUD in the settlers, resulting in reduced zinc transfer capacity and increased impurity carry over to Electrowinning. The Ishigaki Fibre-Wakishimizu filter (fibre media rapid filtration equipment) has been identified as polishing filter that potentially could remove solids from the PLS of Skorpion Zinc. A pilot unit with 20m³/h capacity was tested on site over a period of 9 months under plant operating conditions in the refinery. The FW filter produces a clear filtrate, acceptable for the Solvent Extraction. Turbidity is improved by 72%. Gravimetric analysis indicates a 47% removal of solids. However, the gravimetric method is biased by a co-precipitation of saturated salts during the analysis. Filter media is blinded by the Skorpion Zinc PLS solution, as result of suspended solids and process chemistry. The media could not be regenerated to acceptable conditions. Further testwork to investigate the impact of process solution chemistry modification on blinding is undertaken. Based on the outcome of this investigation a final decision on the FW filter can be taken.

Examples of applicable cost index series are included with values given for the last ten years. The compilation of the indices is discussed with consideration given to the possible sources of error inherent in their application to specific mining cost problems.

Analysis of Electrostatic Separation for Rutile Cleaning Duty Using a Plate Electrode Assisted High Tension Roll Separator A plate assisted electrostatic high tension roll separator has been used for the removal of impurity mineral grains from a rutile rich product stream. A laboratory study and a subsequent production study explored the effect of machine conditions with a view to the optimisation of the separation performance of the separator. The performance requirement was that the TiO2 grade in the non-conductor stream was to be less than ten per cent whilst at the same time the ZrO2 grade in the conductor stream had to be less than 0.5 per cent at mass recoveries of greater than 90 per cent to the conductor stream and less than 5 per cent to the non-conductor stream. Mineralogy data was utilized to determine the feasibility of achieving the production targets with the feed under study. Since the feed stream mineralogy was dominated by rutile, leucoxene and zircon, it was possible to use an approximation to the actual mineral assemblage as well as the raw X-ray fluorescence data to understand the separation duty of the Carrara machine. Since there were four conflicting criteria used for the performance requirement, an index was devised that incorporated all the requirements simultaneously. This new index was the sum of the squares of the difference between the achieved and desired values, weighted with respect to the variance of each variable. If the desired value for a particular criterion had been met its contribution to the sum was set to zero, no matter how well the criterion had been met. For the production machine the strict requirements were almost achieved. As expected, the achievement of the target performance was dependent of the feed conditions at the time of measurement. This paper reports the results of this study.

This paper deals with the application of table flotation to two unusual mineral dressing problems. Both problems involved the removal of interfering minerals at sizes too coarse to normal froth flotation.The first problem was the removal of arsenical minerals from Broken Hill gravity concentrates without further size reduction. Table flotation without grinding of the original concentrates gave almost complete rejection of the arsenic from the concentrates. A typical test result was a reduction of arsenic in jig concentrate from 0.75% arsenic to 0.007% arsenic.The second problem was to develop a method to produce a high grade calcium carbonate concentrate from coastal dune sands containing about 10% silica and about 80% calcium carbonate. The sands were about 30 mesh British Standard Screen (B.S.S.), and for economic and other reasons it was stipulated that the separation be made without grinding. Again, table flotation gave excellent results. A concentrate was produced containing 99.62% acid soluble material, representing a recovery of 98.69% of the calcium carbonate in the feed with a rejection of 96.44% of the silica.The investigations' were carried out at the Kalgoorlie Metallurgical Laboratory, under the Department of Mines...

MUCH progress in -blast-furnace construction and in the manufacture of firebrick for furnace linings has been made since the publication of Bulletin 130 of the U. S. Bureau of Mines on "Blast-Furnace Breakouts, Explosions and Slips, and Methods of Prevention," by F. H. Willcox in 1917. At the time of publishing this report comparatively little information was available to blast-furnace men as to the fundamental facts relating to the character of blast-furnace refractories. Some of the accepted theories of only a few years ago have been completely reversed. The mortality of blast-furnace linings used to be so great that nearly every furnace plant had one or more complete linings in the brick shed ready for use in case of a lining suddenly "going out"; it was generally accepted that a furnace could not "keep her lines" more than two or three years at best, and often a hot spot in the shell would develop, or a breakout occur in the hearth or bosh within a year or two after blowing in on a new lining. In some respects these frequent relinings were not so detrimental as to he a complete loss because they afforded opportunities to take advantage of advances in blast-furnace practice. At present the cost of relining has greatly increased, but the life of a lining has also increased. Anything less than five years on a lining is now considered a short blast.

Triboelectric Charge and Separation Characteristics of Industrial Minerals The basic principles of triboelectric charge and separation of minerals and the factors affecting the entity of the charges developed on mineral surfaces are discussed and the surface pretreatment methods by which the electrophysical properties and thereby triboelectric charging and separation of minerals can be artificially altered/modified are reviewed. Furthermore, the triboelectricfication theory of materials is envisaged from the chemical concept of acid-base donor-acceptor and an attempt is made to correlate the physical concept of triboelectrification with the donor-acceptor properties. The triboelectric charge characteristics of the quartz, calcite and wollastonite mineral samples for different size classes were defined using different tribocharging medium. Based on the triboelectric charges acquired by mineral samples their energetic work function values are estimated. In addition, the main electrophysical properties, ie dielectric constant and electrical conductivity, of different size fractions of the mineral samples are measured and their donor-acceptor chemical properties were defined. A series of triboelectric separation tests were conducted to explore the possibilities for separation these mineral from each others. The results from the triboelectric charge and separation of the single mineral systems showed promising prospect in separating quartz, calcite, and wollastonite from each others. Finally, attempts were made to explore the possibilities to implement triboelectric charge and separation process to real ores. Promising results achieved when separation of calcite from silicate impurity was sought from a carbonate ore. A very high purity (99 per cent) calcite product was obtained at a recovery of 80 per cent. Interesting results were also achieved to concentrate wollastonite from a complex silicate ore containing quartz, different feldspars, wollastonite and other Mg-Fe silicates. In this case conditioning of the ore with salicylic acid at defined temperature and relative humidity was found to be essential to concentrate wollastonite. The outcomes indicate despite the fact that triboelectric charge and separation process has not been completely perceived, it pronounced to be an environmentally friendly and economically viable technique for minerals and wastes beneficiation. Being a dry beneficiation technique the process has special appeal, which must be explored further in particular for treating industrial minerals.

Pillar extraction at shallow depths with small pillars that were not originally intended for secondary extraction can provide a huge benefit to the coal mining industry in those areas where a significant percentage of the remaining coal reserves are locked up in small pillars at shallow depths and where opencast mining methods are simply not as cost-effective and practical to implement. A system considering all of the pertinent geotechnical and mining aspects for the safe and efficient pillar extraction of small pillars at shallow depths at Xstrata Coal South Africa (XCSA) has been further developed and implemented as part of an ongoing improvement process addressing all of the relevant legal and associated risk aspects. This work follows on from the previous pillar extraction work carried out at the ATC, Boschmans, and Spitzkop Collieries. The process involved a number of in-house workshops and sessions arranged with all key personnel from Tavistock Colliery, and also included Professor Nielen van der Merwe of the University of the Witwatersrand, a world renowned authority on pillar extraction, towards reviewing and developing the Modified NEVID pillar extraction system employed previously at Boschmans Colliery. The system is currently being employed at Tavistock Colliery with success and no major accidents, with around 655 000 t of coal having been successfully extracted from the pillar extraction panels.

After considerable input from the mining industry, the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) finalised National Instrument 43-101: Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects. This Instrument, which became law across Canada on 1 February 2001, applies to all technical public disclosure on mineral projects and requires all technical disclosure to be based on the work of a æqualified personÆ (QP). While the QP is quite similar to the Competent Person in Australia there are important differences when it comes to all disclosure. This paper will summarise the main areas in which the Instrument introduces major changes to Canadian disclosure standards on mineral projects including the role and responsibility of the qualified person; the increased requirements to file technical reports; the incorporation by reference of the October 2000 CIM definitions of resources and reserves and additional rules governing written disclosure of scientific and technical information. In October 2001, eight months after the implementation of NI 43-101, the CSA compiled a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) and CSA responses to assist mining industry participants and their advisors in understanding and applying NI-43-101. This document has been well received by industry. The CSA plans to update the FAQs when further guidance is requested. Two industry committees have been established to provide the CSA with technical advice on the application of NI 43-101. As recommended by the Ontario Securities Commission/Toronto Stock Exchange Mining Standards Task Force, the CSA has established an external industry advisory committee û the Mining Technical Advisory and Monitoring Committee (MTAMC) û to monitor the application of NI 43-101 and advise the CSA on industry and professional developments. The role of the CSA-Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Working Committee on Reserves and Resources is to ensure that the future changes and updates to the CIM Standards can be efficiently and effectively incorporated in NI 43-101. During this first year, the Canadian securities regulators have seen an improvement in the quality of disclosure on mineral projects, which will increase investor confidence in the industry.

Thirty mixed cultures of microorganisms from soil, water and mineral samples from the Groote Eylandt Mining Company mine site were approximately three times more effective in biodegrading manganese dioxide (34± 18 mg Mn++/1/day) than sixteen purified strains (11 ± 10 mg Mn++/1/day) isolated from the primary enrichment cultures. Two pure bacterial genera identified as a Pseudomonad and a Bacillus, with an excess MnOz and nutrient, were able to dissolve 106 mg Mn++/litre/day in mixed culture compared with 29 mg Mn++/litre/day when grown separately.

THE numerous theories of hardening which have been advanced in recent years are all satisfactory in accounting for some of the phenomena observed in hardening metals, but none so far presented account for all of the facts observed. Some years ago one of the authors, R. S. Dean,' presented a theory to account for some of the properties accompanying work hardening. The present paper develops this theory further in the light of recent experimental work and extends it to other forms of hardening. Many of the ideas included have come from the writings and personally communicated thoughts of others. We have attempted to give proper credit in every case, but it is possible that we have not always done so. As an historical basis it is desirable here to review very briefly the hardening theories which have been current. The first comprehensive theory of work-hardening phenomena was due to Sir George Beilby.2 He contributed the idea that with cold work part of the structure of the metal was rendered amorphous and that-it was to this amorphous material that the cold-worked metal owed its difference in properties. According to Beilby's theory this amorphous material was a supercooled liquid and, therefore, had the characteristics of a vitreous material. That such a theory is not capable of explaining the property changes in metals has been repeatedly pointed out. This theory also allowed a slip to take place only once on a given plane, which, as has been pointed out by Jeffries and Archer13 is not consistent with the observed length of an, individual slip and the amount of elongation which can be obtained by wire drawing. The modifications, which have been proposed to this hypothesis to make it coincide with the experimental facts, have to a considerable extent robbed the theory of its clean-cut characteristics. It is well known that the electrochemical precipitation of metals from aqueous solutions is conducted by the electrochemical standard potential scale. This scale indicates the order of nobility of different metals. Consequently, the standard potential scale shows the nocivity of metals when they are present as impurities in aqueous solutions containing metals. In the hydrometallurgy of cobalt, nickel and zinc are co-deposited during cobalt electrodeposition. Nickel has almost the same chemical, physical and electrochemical properties as cobalt. Furthermore, the electrochemical potential of nickel is relatively higher than that of cobalt. For this reason nickel is preferentially reduced at the cathode in the presence of cobalt. The presence of small amounts of zinc in solution leads to contamination of cobalt electro won. In spite of its lower electrochemical potential in comparison to cobalt, zinc is reduced on the cathode because of its higher hydrogen-overvoltage. But, in the hydrometallurgy of zinc, small amounts of cobalt present into solution will contaminates the zinc reduced at the cathode. This is easily explained by the fact that cobalt is more electropositive than zinc. The co-deposition mechanism of sulphur at the cathode is not yet well understood. Great attention has to be paid to the mechanism of co-deposition of sulphur during cobalt electrolysis..This work aimed to investigate the influence of some parameters on the co-deposition of nickel, zinc and sulphur during cobalt electrowinning. The following parameters have been investigated : Co2+ concentration in the electrolyte, current density and ammonium sulphate (NH4)2SO4 additions. It has been established that important nickel, zinc and sulphur co-deposition takes place at relatively low Co2+ concentration in solution. The behaviour of these elements with regard to the cathodic phenomena has been established.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze detailed crushing and screening configurations and the interrelationship as they relate to mass flow balance, operating efficiency, plant availability and final production. The entropy of ore bodies limits the standardization of crushing and screening plants, however, consideration for a continuous and sensible assessment of the mass flow balance of the circuit will yield the best achievable results. Since energy costs have continuously risen in the last few years, it is imperative that these circuits offer low power requirements and low operating expenses. The paper will detail how the efficient implementation of continuous mass flow balance in the application of crushing and screening plants will generate quality improvement and process improvement, which will translate into bigger production and energy savings.

Pseudoclastic hydrothermal alteration textures occur within quenched coherent dykes forming part of a subaqueous dome complex (~4 Ma) onPonza Island, Italy. These textures are similar to those observed in considerably older (~500 Ma) subaqueous volcanic rocks at a number of localities throughout the Mount Read Volcanics in Tasmania and elsewhere in ancient volcanic sequences of this type in Australia. This is significant because the processes of formation, hydrothermal alteration and secondary mineralisation of ancient volcanic sequences may be better understood if we can make comparisons with modern analogues. Observations at Ponza imply that these pseudoclastic alteration features form synvolcanically or immediately after dyke emplacement and lava extrusion. This is compatible with scenarios presented for their formation in ancient sequences in the Mount Read Volcanics, Tasmania.

Various methods have been developed through US Bureau of Mines research to remove gas in advance of, during, and subsequent to mining. These include drilling horizontal or cross-measure boreholes from a mine opening, and vertical boreholes stimulated for drainage in advance of mining or for gob gas drainage. Techniques and equipment now exist that allow drilling a borehole at any angle to the vertical, and even along an arc. Stimulation treatments have also been developed that provide for increased gas production capability. This paper describes the long-term production history of five select gas drainage installations. The Bureau of Mines conducted or participated in four studies. The remaining study was conducted by the Equitable Gas Co. Principles of storage, release, and migration of coal bed gases The amount of gas contained within any given area of a coalbed depends on the coal's inherent storage capacity and the physical conditions of the coalbed. The gas storage capacity of coal is primarily a function of rank. As such, it cannot be affected by the presence of drainage holes (Kim, 1977). Certain physical conditions of the coalbed can, however, be changed that will affect the release and migration of gas. By pumping water out of the coalbed through the vertical boreholes, two important changes occur - pressure is reduced and water saturation is lowered. Reducing reservoir pressure releases gas as the coalbed adjusts and equilibrates gas to the change. Increasingly large amounts of gas are released for each incremental decrease in pressure. Lowering the water saturation level raises the permeability of the coalbed to gas and allows the gas to more readily migrate to the wellbore (Kisse and Edwards, 1975). For horizontal boreholes completed near mine openings, the coalbed has already undergone a pressure or water saturation reduction phase. This condition thus allows such boreholes to be highly productive with minimal water production. Industrial grinding machines used in the mineral processing industries are mostly of the tumbling mill type. These mills exist in various types: ball, rod, pebble, autogenous, and semi-autogenous. Balls and rods are traditionally media shapes used in the tumbling mills. In resent years, as an alternative to balls, grinding charges with various shapes are being used. Cylpebs are slightly tapered cylindrical grinding charges with length equaling diameter, and all the edges being radiused. Cylpebs of equal diameter and length have 50% greater surface area and 45% greater weight than balls of the same material. In addition, they have 9% higher bulk density than steel balls, or 12% higher bulk density than cast balls. An important advantage of cylpebs over balls is that cylpebs produce narrower granulometric distribution due to their shapes. However, some discrepancies were found in the literature regarding the milling performance of cylpebs in comparison with balls (Chi, 2004). In recent studies, Chi (2004) has provided detailed information on cylpebs and has compared these to balls in relation to media mass, size distribution, surface area, and input specific energy. Ipek (2006) has investigated the effects of cylpebs and balls with equal mass and surface area on the breakage rate of quartz, using cylpebs and balls separately. Similarly, Lameck and Moys (2006) have investigated the effects of balls and worn balls on breakage rate of material using worn balls as grinding environment. However, no study has attempted to investigate the effects of grinding environment other than balls on the brekage distribution. As indicated by Prasher (1987), the breakage distribution function is independent of the following variables in ball mills: hold-up (Mika et al., 1967; Kelsall et al. 1969), mill speed and ball load (Herbst and Fuerstenau, 1972), media load and ball density (Kelsall et al., 1973), mill diameter (Malghan and Fuerstenau, 1976), and powder charge (Shoji et al. 1980). The aim of the present paper is to compare the effects of cylpebs and balls on the breakage distribution function of quartz with respect to same mass and same surface area. BACKGROUND Comminution as a rate process is called kinetic approach. Studies on the kinetic approach are reviewed by Oner (2001). Oner states that grinding kinetics are based on studies by Kolmogorov in 1941 and that Robert (1950) is the first to suggest this approach. Later, Melzak, Loeveday, and Reid have improved the grinding kinetics equation; and, Austin and Lynch have conducted two basic studies on the analytical solutions of these equations. Considering the results of studies comparing the size reduction mechanisms, it has been accepted that breakage constitutes of two operations. These two basic operations, first defined by Epstein (1948), are those of selection of material for breakage and the distribution of breakage material to particle sizes smaller than the initial size (Lynch, 1977). Epstein defined the two operations as: ? Pn(y), the probability of breakage of a particle size in the nth step of the breakage process. ? F(x,y), the cumulative distributions by weight of particles of size x<y arising from the breakage of a unit mass of a size y. Probability of breakage is called a selection or a breakage-rate function (Si). Characteristics size distribution after breakage is called a breakage distribution or appearance function (Bi,j). Due to the difficulties in representing particle size distributions mathematically and constantly, the batch equation based on particle size fraction is suggested. Thus, as is the case in breakage distribution and specific rate of breakage, the breakage parameters were defined by batch grinding experiments conducted in laboratories (Oner, 2001). When effective breakage occurs in the mill, the breakage of material with single feed size fraction usually fits first order grinding kinetics and the specific rate of breakage values can be calculated through the slope of semi-log plot. The values of the breakage distributions are deduced from the size distributions at short grinding times where there is mainly size 1 material breaking and only small amount of smaller sizes to rebreak (Austin et. al., 1984). B values can be calculated by using BII. [ ] where j is the top size of the charge, Pi(t) is the cumulative percent undersize of i th size interval at the short grinding time which gives no more than about 30% broken out of the top size interval. Cumulative primary breakage distribution, Bi,j, is also defined in an empirical form by [ ] where xi is the top size and Bi,j is the weight fraction of primary breakage products. The parameters F, ? and ß define the size distribution of the material being ground. On plotting size versus Bi,j on log scale, the slope of the lower portion of the curve gives the value of ?, the slope of the upper portion of the curve gives the value of ß, and F is the intercept as in Fig.1.
