The Bureau of Mines is developing melting data for binary combinations of the alkaline earth fluorides and yttria to facilitate the formulation of slag compositions. The present report deals with the CaF2-Y203 system for which solidus and liquidus temperatures and solid solubilities were determined. The information is presented as the phase diagram. All specimen compositions were blended from high-purity materials and encapsulated in Mo or Pt20Rh prior toheat treatment. Liquidus temperatures were determined by ceramographic examination of heat-treated and quenched specimens. Solidus temperatures were determined by differential thermal analysis and by electron microprobe analysis of quenched specimens. Terminal solid solubilities were derived by parametric methods. The peritectic system was found to be pseudobinary due to the formation of yttrium oxyfluoride at temperatures near the liquidus. The peritectic point occurs at 7 mole pct Y203 and 1,438° ± 5°C. The terminal solid solubility of Y203 in CaF2 decreases from 7 mole pct at 1,438° C to 1 mole pct at 1,100° C, and the solubility of CaF2 in Y203 decreases from 9.5 to 7 mole pct over the same temperature interval.

Science Applications, Inc. has developed for the U.S. Bureau of Mines a rapid response radon monitor capable of accurately responding within three minutes to changing radon levels of magnitude from 100 to 10,000 pCi/1, typical of the levels in working uranium mines. The instrument weighs 17 pounds, is sized 12" x 10" x 6", and is capable of 8 hours of continuous portable operation with a self-contained, rechargeable battery power source. Residual chamber contamination from a radon level allowed to remain in the chamber for 90 minutes is about 10 percent, decaying about a factor of two in one hour. The instrument sensitivity is a nominal 0.1 cpm/(pCi/1), with a background count rate of less than 1 cpm.

Laboratory data for 155 field muds and 77 .shales have been used to develop correlations to estimate the net streaming potential component of the SP. Analysis of these data and comparison with field tests show that streaming potential corrections must be made to obtain an accurate estimate of the electrochemical potential for use in the determinntion of formation water resi-iiviy. The self-potential curve is related to formation water resistivity, and considerable effort within the oil industry has been directed toward clarifying this relationship. The Schlumbergers and Leonardon1,2 recognized that two types of potentials, electrochemical and electro-kinetic, resulted in the net potential variation in the borehole. Most of the later papers have dealt with the electrochemical component and its controlling parameters. The investigations of Wyllie,2" Salisch' and Moore5 provide the most extensive sources of data on streaming potentials across mud cakes. These authors observed streaming potentials of sufficient magnitude to be of critical importance in SP interpretation, if it is assumed that streaming potentials develop only opposite permeable beds. Streaming potentials across shales have been reported by Schenck and by Gondouin, et al.7 Since SP magnitude is the difference in potential opposite shale and sand beds, these authors suggested that the net streaming potential component may be negligible. The present investigation was initiated to evaluate empirically some of the parameters controlling the magnitude of the net borehole streaming potential and to determine whether useful relations between mud properties and net streaming potential could be established. Field muds were used in this investigation. These muds were characterized by the amount and type of chemical treatment utilized for five days before Sampling. Filter loss, mud resistivity, mud density and filtrate resistivity were determined for each mud with conventional methods and apparatus. Mud filtrate pH was estimated with Hydrion pH paper for the appropriate range. The Bureau of Mines investigated the application of a diffusion model to sintering rate data developed for lithium titanium ferrite. The data were obtained by sintering pressed pellets under identical conditions for various times up to 11 hours. Stereological measurements were made on polished sections, and sintering rates were calculated. A model for intermediate stage sintering was fitted to the stereological data. This procedure produced a method by which these type data could be used to study the relative importance of volume and grain-boundary diffusion under a variety of sintering conditions.

Several drilling programs at Maldon have produced 7790 core samples, which were assayed for gold, with 2825 of the samples assayed for nine other metallic elements. There is a lack of correlation between gold and all other elements. The situation, however, changes dramatically when sorted according to the abundance of arsenic. In the populations where As >200 ppm, there are strong, positive correlations between gold and several elements. There is also a strong positive correlation of Au with the weighted sums and products of all elements with the elemental averages as a weighting factor, and Bi*Sb and Bi*As elemental products. In these populations, there is also a strong positive correlation between the logarithms of Au and logarithms of each element, as well as the elemental sums and products described above. The correlation coefficients increase with higher As cut-off values.All elemental distributions but especially gold show a high-nugget effect and display high skewness and dispersion, low kurtosis, and common outliers. The distributions of their logarithms are several magnitudes less scattered and without outliers. Thus, the logarithmical distribution correlations are best for practical use.Correlation coefficients were T-tested and are statistically significant. The elemental correlations, particularly those of logarithmic values of weighted sums and Bi, could be used as a gold path finding tool at Maldon. After a preliminary assay for gold and arsenic, only samples with As > 200 ppm should be assayed for other elements. Higher values of gold-correlated elements or elemental ratios, in samples with low gold grades, may increase confidence that gold is under reporting due to its highly nuggetty nature.CITATION:Krokowski de Vickerod, J and Ebsworth, G B, 2012. The problems associated with the presence of organic materials and of water in explosion-proof enclosures used in high voltage, high capacity applications were examined through a literature search and theoretical reasoning. Information on volatilities is presented. The conclusion is reached that explosive pressures are significantly enhanced by inclusion of these materials.

ANDROS INCORPORATED has designed, manufactured and delivered four handheld C02 DETECTORS and three handheld CH4 DETECTORS. These instruments are for in-mine safety use. The DETECTORS incorporated an NDIR optical/electronic analyzer design in which exceptional zero stability is achieved by pressure modulation of the sample gas. This eliminates the need for daily calibration. This stability and the miniature design (2.5" x 4.5" x 4.5"; 4.5 lbs) of the C02/CH4 DETECTORS provide practical instruments suitable for routine safety inspections. This report includes the theory and design of the instruments as well as studies of gas-pressure modulation by a piezoceramic-driven Helmholtz resonator.

"Pure sands are typically the domain of slurry shields due to their high permeability and their granular characteristics. However, the Earth Pressure Balanced (EPB) shield machine technology has advanced in recent years with improved conditioning agents and shield machines that are equipped with slurry injection facilities and alternative mucking methods. These new so-called hybrid EPB machines have steadily increased the range of application of the EPB technology. The contribution discusses the capacities and operational features of hybrid EPB vs. slurry shield technology in pure sands. At the example of the Metro Line 4 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), the contribution shows that hybrid EPB tunneling in pure sands is possible and it is compared with a state-of-the-art slurry shield project as the KASIG project in Karlsruhe (Germany). Furthermore, the control of the support pressure by means of foam conditioning and slurry injection in conjunction with a close, real-time monitoring of machine parameters is discussed. INTRODUCTION Slurry shield and EPB technologies have both undergone significant developments in recent years, leading to the use of parts of one technology in the other and even to completely hybrid systems. Also the ranges of application (see recommendations by DAUB (DAUB 2010)) of both technologies have been shifted far beyond their original limits and are largely overlapping by now. Nevertheless, the basic principles of face support remain unchanged. Exploiting the possibilities of process data analysis (Maidl 2014), the interactions between the ground and the shield machine are a matter of research and have been intensely investigated. PRINCIPLES AND CALCULATION OF FACE SUPPORT PRESSURE Figure 1 shows the principles of two approaches for the determination of required support pressures: kinematic methods and numerical methods. Kinematic methods that are employed for the assessment of face stability only consider the situation in front of the TBM. The required face support force is determined by means of an assumed failure wedge that would form in ultimate limit state. Based on the ground properties, the vertical surcharge and the self-weight is transformed into a horizontal force along a virtual sliding surface. This horizontal force is to be balanced by the face support. The calculation results are amended by respective partial safety factors for water and earth pressure and the method-specific support pressure fluctuations are added."

This paper reports on research on leaching pyrite in a germ-free system. The effects of mineral particle size, pulp potential and various oxidation agents on pyrite leaching were studied. The results indicated that a smaller mineral particle size leads to a higher leaching rate of pyrite. The optimum results were obtained with a mineral particle size of -0.037 mm. The pulp potential reflected the leaching process and an increasing pulp potential improved pyrite leaching. The leaching rate rapidly increased with the addition of oxidation agents such as Fe3+ and H2O2. However, the precipitate generated by ferric ion coated the surface of the pyrite and prevented further leaching.

In this paper, examples are presented of pyrometallurgical research and associated teaching activities during the past century within the Department of Metallurgical Engineering, now the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, at the University of Toronto. Throughout these years, pyrometallurgical research has been characterized by recognition of the importance of the interdependence of measurements and models as well as the development and application of sensors, for the generation, validation and practical implementation of new knowledge. The important role played in the delivery of lectures and participation in joint research by Adjunct Professors with strong backgrounds in the pyrometallurgical industry is described. Projects conducted in close collaboration with the industrial sector and opportunities for students to obtain practical experience working as teams on a "round-the clock" shift basis within an industrial pilot plant environment are outlined. These activities, together with the involvement of students in poster competitions and the presentation of papers at society conferences and technical meetings, are still vital elements in the development of pyrometallurgists equipped with the appropriate professional skills for subsequent employment within academia, government laboratories or the industrial sector.

Introduction Since the discovery of a major oil pool at Leduc, Alberta, on February 13th, 1947, the long spell of 'oil drought' in Western Canada is now being turned into an oil and gas flood which requires immediate action to obtain the optimum economic benefits. The Woodbend, Section 9, and Okalta extensions of the Leduc field itself have been established; the Redwater pool, lying thirty-seven miles northeast of Edmonton, has been discovered and is being drilled up, and the Imperial Schoepp No. 1 or Golden Spike discovery holds promise of something phenomenal in view of the 500 feet of oil-saturated coral-reef porosity whose areal extent is not known. Imperial Stanolind Barrhead No. 1, northwest of Edmonton, revealed the presence of oil in the Madison, and just recently Gulf N.J. Ellis No. 1, some sixty miles southeast of Leduc, found commercial production in the Leduc D-2 discovery zone. In addition to these Paloeozoic discoveries, gas and oil reserves have also been established in the Upper and Lower Cretaceous, which must be penetrated by all tests on the way through the geological column to the Devonian. If ever there appeared to be an index of 'things to come' in the oil industry, this is it. However, without these recent discoveries the picture in Western Canada does and always did, look very promising indeed. A brief survey of the geological setting in Western Canada is the object of this contribution.

Fire suppression systems are now recognised by both NFPA 502 and PIARC as legitimate tools for both life protection and asset protection. The effectiveness of these tools for life protection demands extremely rapid and accurate incident detection coupled with rapid response. This rapid response must be integrated with other emergency systems such as emergency ventilation. The March 2007 fatal Burnley Tunnel incident in Australia graphically illustrates the potential of effectively integrated fixed suppression systems to protect people from harm and save infrastructure from damage. Despite the raft of technology available in that instance to the operator it was the human operatorÆs ability to effectively control the emergency equipment and not the equipment itself which so positively influenced the threat to life and property.

The Ute-Ulay project area is located approximately five miles west of Lake City, in Hinsdale County, Colorado. The Ute-Ulay Mine site is approximately one mile east of the project area. The elevation of the site is 9,200 feet and is adjacent to Henson Creek (Figure 1) [ ] The Ute-Ulay Mining complex is an inactive gold, silver, and zinc mining/milling operation, that operated from the 1880?s until the 1970?s, and sporadically into the late 1990?s. The mining complex comprises several levels of underground mines, a flotation mill, and an abandoned town site. Due to the narrow, steep sided canyon, milled tailings were pumped upstream one mile in a sluice box to a wider section of the canyon, and deposited into five tailings impoundments and one berm located between the impoundments. An estimated 9,000 cubic yards (yd3) of fine grained tailings were located in the impoundments adjacent to the creek. The Ute-Ulay project area consisted of the mill tailings impoundments located upstream from the historic mine.

Observed mineral assemblages in the Mt. Lyell copper deposit can be correlated with phase equilibrium investigations in the systems Cu-Fe-S and Fe-Zn-S. The trend of crystallization (or paragenetic sequence) of the ores is reflected in a progressive increase in the Cu: Fe and metal: sulphur ratios of the assemblages. This trend agrees with the regional zoning of the district. Tentative relationships between the paragenetic sequence, sulphur vapour pressure, and temperature are presented graphically. The absence of a suitable geological thermometer prevents precise elucidation of the range of temperatures and pressures which existed during crystallization.INTRODUCTIONRecent phase equilibrium investigations of metal-sulphur systems at the Geophysical Laboratory, Washington, D.C. provide valuable information on the stability relations of a number of important sulphide minerals. This data, when applied to natural ore deposits, may be expected to clarify two special problems which confront the ore petrologist seeking to interpret observed data in terms of a particular physical and chemical environment of ore deposition. These two problems are the sequence of formation of sulphide minerals (commonly designated the paragenetic sequence) and an elucidation of the range of temperatures and pressures which existed during crystallization. The object of this paper is to make such an interpretation of the copper mineralization of the Mt. The VoD of non-ideal explosives depends on the charge diameter and the thickness, strength and sound velocity of the confiner. VoD measurements are made to evaluate explosives for development, quality control and prediction of field performance. In testing, the container is part of the explosive system and affects the measured VoD. Pipe testing in cardboard tubes delivers the best guide to unconfined critical diameter and minimum VoD range, but the thickness of the pipes affects the result close to critical diameter, even in emulsions. PVC pipes are not good for unconfined test work because they provide relatively strong confinement. Care must be taken to select pipes with constant relative pipe area across the range of diameters. Where pipes are used to evaluate the effect of confinement, the ratio of the wall thickness relative to the thickness of the detonation driving zone in the explosive needs to exceed 0.5 to create full confinement and the ratio of the detonation velocity to the confiner wave speed must be considered. Estimates for critical thicknesses are provided from Non-Ideal detonation models. The relationship between confinement modulus and VoD is discussed and indexes are suggested for quantifying the explosive performance.

In order to predict the composition of inclusions and to ascertain a method to prevent inclusions from forming in liquid Fe-16 mass Cr alloy, a thermodynamic database was developed through a quantitative determination of thermodynamic relationships of Cr-Al-Si-Mn systems in the liquid Fe alloys. Applications of the databases to the prediction of Mn/Si complex deoxidation with Alin Fe-16 mass Cr alloy were demonstrated in succession. The electromagnetic levitation technique using a cold crucible was employed to separate inclusions from liquid metallic alloys completely and to prevent any contamination from surroundings. Various interaction parameters in the liquid Fe-16 mass per cent Cr alloy system were determined; these are: [eAl(Fe)Cr= 0.19/T, rAl(Fe)O,Cr= -0.01, rAl(Fe)O,Cr= -0.00013, eS1Cr(Fe)= -0.38/T,rSi(Fe)O,Cr= 0.007, rO(Fe)Si,Cr= 0.0044, rA1(Fe)Si,Cr= -0.0075, rSi(Fe)A1,Cr= -0.0078, rSi(Fe)Mn,Cr= 0.005, and rMn(Fe)Si,Cr=0.01.] An improved database, utilizing interaction parameters for molten metal determined in this study, and the Fact Sage slag database of the MnO-SiO2-Al2O3-CrOx-MgO system were used for thermodynamic calculations. These were carried out under various thermodynamic conditions, and results were compared with experimental data of Si/Al, Mn/Si, and Mn/Si/Al deoxidation equilibria. With the abovementioned results, together with experimentally obtained data, thermodynamic conditions were determined, in particular Mn and Si contents, under which liquid inclusions form in liquid Fe-16 mass per cent Cr alloy. The critical Al content in liquid Fe-16 per cent Cr alloy, above which solid inclusion of corundum phase ((Al,Cr)2O3) formed, was as low as 10 ppm. This indicates that extreme care must be taken in controlling the Al content in the metal to avoid formation of solid corundum phase ((Al,Cr)2O3) inclusion. The compositional change prediction of inclusions, which originate from slag entrapment and by Ca addition, was demonstrated by use of the alloy database optimized through this study, and the Fact Sage oxide database. For Si-deoxidized Fe-16 per cent Cr alloy, high Si and low basicity of slag are effective to obtain liquid inclusions. For Al-deoxidized Fe-16 per cent Cr alloy, it is important to keep the Si content lower than 0.1 per cent and it is required to add Ca. High horizontal stresses and high horizontal to vertical in-situ principal stress ratios in the plane of underground drifts and entries can damage weakly laminated roof rocks quite severely. Such stresses are difficult to measure accurately, as illustrated by case histories of in-situ stress measurement at Wistow and Lea Hall mines, in the UK. Their direction and relative magnitude can, however, be estimated from the absolute velocity vectors of continental plates. With the preliminary results from the World Stress Map project now available it is possible to indicate mining areas where regional horizontal stresses are low, such as Europe, and high, such as Australia and Asia

Biomineralization of manganese on titanium condenser material exposed to seawater has been illustrated. Biom-ineralization occurs when the fouling components, namely, the microbes, are able to oxidize minerals present in water and deposit them as insoluble oxides on biofilm surfaces. Extensive biofilm characterization studies showed that an alarmingly large number of bacteria in these biofilms are capable of oxidizing manganese and are, thereby, capable of causing biomineralization on the condenser material exposed to seawater. This paper addresses studies on understanding the exact role of the microbes in bringing about oxidation of manganese. The kinetics of manganese oxidation by marine Gram-positive manganese oxidizing bacterium Bacillus spp. that was isolated from the titanium surface was studied in detail. Manganese oxidation in the presence of Bacil-lus cells, by cell free extract (CFE) and heat-treated cell free extract was also studied. The study confirmed that bacteria mediate manganese oxidation and lead to the formation of biogenic oxides of MnO2, eventually leading to biomineralization on titanium surface exposed to seawater.

This paper presents the ground settlement monitoring system used during the construction of two tunnels bored by two EPB TBMs, beneath the existing and active railway embankment in Bologna (Italy). The tunnels run close to large buildings and beneath bridges and other infrastructure. Data are collected from remote total stations and from electro levels installed directly on the railway tracks. The automated monitoring system acquires and analyses data then sounds an alarm in the event that there is a problem. Alarms are sent out in case of excessive tilt or settlement. Data is provided through a dedicated web application for multiple-party access, to gather, manage and store monitoring data.
