The latest downturn in the world’s metal prices has forced many mining companies to focus on cost reduction and productivity improvements to remain competitive. Maintenance represents a significant part of the overall operating costs in the mining industry. A structured, proactive maintenance approach, such as reliability-centered maintenance, can achieve cost reductions and productivity improvements. Remote condition-monitoring systems are becoming commonplace because they have the potential to identify problems before failure. Detection of equipment degradation before failure will enable repairs to be scheduled, thereby reducing costs and interruptions to production. The mining industry is in the midst of uncertain times. Decreasing commodity prices, demand, head grade and capital availability along with increasing environmental requirements have put pressure on mining companies to significantly reduce costs to maintain short- and long-term viability. Corporations are looking at expansion, merger/consolidation and financial/hedging programs to achieve these cost reductions. Mines are reducing costs by eliminating all but essential expenditures, increasing production levels, reducing overtime and investing in new technologies.

The earliest known records related to mining document in dramatic terms the fact that mining methods have undergone significant change over the centuries. Wooden wedges, hammers and chisels, “fne setting”, to name a few, were the frst tools used to extract ore .or quarry rock for civilization. These inefficient tools and unsafe practices have been replaced today with some of the highest technology known to man. At the heart of most mining operations is the blasting program which utilizes one of the most efficient tools ever invented.. . explosives. Ever since they were invented, miners have been searching for more efficient products and methods with which to harness this “tool” and make it safer, reliable, and more eficient to use.

A LARGE proportion of the coke used is made in the by-product oven from the high-volatile coals mined in the adjacent district. At the beginning it was feared good by-product blast-furnace coke could not be made with our coals. By experimenting with various mixtures of coals, coking time, oven design, and coking temperatures, much has already been accomplished. The results show that a hard, dense coke, not easily broken by handling, can be produced. In its present state it is not all that could be desired, but it is being constantly improved. Such coke has been used alone as the fuel on several of the blast furnaces producing the highest daily production in the Pittsburgh district. Many of the coals in the Pittsburgh district when coked in the by-product oven yield a gas which contains a high percentage of sulfur, which is objection- able for many metallurgical operations. As this fuel is gradually replacing the ideal fuel, natural gas, which is becoming less plentiful, studies are being made of the best methods for purification. Some metallurgists believe sulfur to be a very injurious element in steel. Recent investigations by Government bureaus, scientific bodies and private firms, seem to indicate that a reasonable amount of sulfur may exist in steel without detriment. The Bureau of Mines has conducted field studies in coal mines throughout the United States to determine the effectiveness of electromagnetic techniques in locating miners trapped underground following a mine accident. Data from these tests have been used to generate models of expected signal and noise distributions as found above these mines. These distributions have aided in placing the expected performance of a through-the-earth electromagnetic communications technique into a probabilistic framework. Results show that at a 10% false-alarm rate, the expected probability o detecting a miner's signal" from a depth of 1000 ft is 54% at 500 ft it is 95%. These depths exceed the actual depths of 90 and 50%, respectively, of United States coal mines. Sensitivity studies have shown that at depth of 1000 ft, the probability of detection will improve approximately 2% for each dB of increase in signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio.

Coal mining companies in Australia are managing the high-consequence risks across their operations more effectively by using an interactive online risk management system known as Riskgate Developed by the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC) at the University of Queensland, Australia, Riskgate contains detailed information about 11 high-consequence risk areas (called topics in the system) for opencut and underground coal mines (Table 1). The existing topics are: fires; strata control for underground mining; ground control for opencut mining; tires; isolation; collisions; explosions and explosives; manual tasks; and trips, slips and falls. Every Riskgate topic is focused on coal industry activities (mining, processing, transport and storage). The scope includes mine sites, lease areas and mine infrastructure (mobile, fixed plant, field equipment, buildings, road and rail transport), and all aspects of the mine life cycle from design through to decommissioning. The topics uniformly recognize that a loss of control can result in injury or fatality, equipment damage, production loss, reputation loss and environmental damage. However, the priority focus for Riskgate is the safety of mine personnel.

The Full Scale Model Roof Bolt Test System described herein was designed, fabricated, erected, and installed by MSA Advanced Systems Division for the U. S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines, Spokane Research Center. It was furnished under USBM Contract No. 50271014 and Modifications. The test system is intended for use by the Bureau of Mines to run comparison tests on roof bolt systems. The mine entry cross section is made from special concrete pillars and roof slabs. They are constructed within a steel beam frame with hydraulic operated cylinders to apply loads that simulate the action of mining overburden. The frame is designed so it can be disassembled for replacing the concrete in subsequent tests. A computer and data acquisition system is furnished to control the load application and measure and gather data.

A study was conducted on the seismic activities and associated rockburst events that took place at an underground Canadian metal mine over a period of five years. In the first stage, a back analysis of the microseismic database led to the identification of clusters of major events. The locations of these clusters were identified with respect to the local geology and the planned mining sequence. In the second stage, a numerical model was constructed using the finite difference code FLAC3D to simulate the in-situ stress, mine geometry, local geology, and stope sequence. Mining-induced stress fields were compared against two rockburst events that took place during this period, as well as against the various geologic units present. It was shown that by combining microseismic analysis and numerical modeling, it was possible to provide a basis for evaluating the influence of the in-situ stress regimes and stope sequencing on mining-induced seismic response.

Many accidents occur in the mining industry as a result of the instability of material during handling and processing operations. Accidents due to dump point instability at stockpiles, and at spoil or waste piles, for example, occur with alarming frequency. Miners must be trained to be better aware of these hazards. Information on safe working procedures at stockpiles and surge piles is provided. Mine operators must review their training and operating procedures regularly to ensure that hazardous conditions are avoided.

The paper discusses assay methods generally used when prospecting for gold, and also the applicability of various chemical methods, it describes a new paper chromatographic technique.for making fairly rapid semi-quantitative assays for very fine gold. Testing of the method in field work shows that this simple method could have applications in geologic work, in prospecting and in certain routine mine sampling work. It is not yet a method that can be used to detect anomalies in traces of gold dispersed around an orebody, as is general practice in geochemical prospecting.INTRODUCTIONAccording to the English economist Harrod (1958), "the acute shortage of gold in the world-because currency value has not been adjusted in line with the fall in the goods value of the various currencies-has been a familiar fact for some time now". Harrod calculates that a rise in the price of gold to double its present value is necessary to rectify this condition, and that, if this rise were to take place, increase in production and reduction in private hoarding might well bring annual accretion to world stocks from the presentaverage of about $464 million to a figure close to the $2,000 million that would probably eiiminate these shortages.Any increase in the price of gold is bound to lead to a great increase in prospecting at working mines, in abandoned areas and possibly in untouched country. Prospecting, techniques for base metal orebodies have improved greatly in the last thirty years; but methods available to detect gold occurring without accessory metals have not received the same attention. THIS paper gives the results : first, of a research into the somewhat extensive literature of titanium; and second, of a series of original tests upon the effect of titanium on iron castings. New investigations have also been made upon the effect of titanium on steel, but I hope to treat this subject in an independent paper at some later date, and, therefore, will not discuss the experiments in detail here. The combined results of this study, which extended over a period of more than two years, can be briefly summarized as follows: 1. Steel or cast-iron, in which the titanium is properly proportioned, and which has been properly treated, is improved in strength, toughness, and durability against wear, such as, for example, the wear of railroad-rails, of steel and chilled-iron .rolls, car-wheels, etc. 2. These improvements seem to be caused, not so much by the direct effect of titanium on the metal, as by its cleansing influence in removing harmful impurities, such as oxygen and oxides, nitrogen, occluded slags, and perhaps also sulphur. It appears also to reduce segregation, which would contribute to the same end. 3. In order that its effects may be fully realized, the treatment of steel or iron with titanium must be correctly performed. Aluminum Production. -By October 1, Aluminum Company of America will restart a 35,000-ton-per-year unit at its aluminum smelter at Rockdale, Tex., restoring that facility to its full capacity of 325,000 tons annually. Primary Ingot Price Increase. -Most U.S. aluminum producers in mid-September were quoting a price of 72 cents per pound for primary aluminum ingot. On September 19, Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. announced that it would increase the price of primary aluminum ingot 4 cents to 76 cents per pound.

Frequently, costs overruns and defaults in mining project performance result in serious problems and headaches for all project participants and impact on corporate objectives, profits and image and, occasionally, lead to project failure. As mining professional s, we should be very concerned that, in a recent World Bank paper (Weber-Fahr, 2001), geological and technical risks were considered the most important ones facing mining projects. Whenever we manage to reduce or minimize these risks, we are in better position to overcome the environment-, market-, finance- and community-related ones. The causes of this situation seem rather systemic, as a fairly long list of industry problems with new pro jects has been described in industry papers in pas t and recent years. A brief review of industry problems with mining projects will be given first, followed by a review of the basics of the current Quality Management and Continuous Improvement perspectives that have evolved from earlier quality control and quality assurance systems and policies. Particular particular attention will be given to the work of W. E. Deming. As the system approach is an essential part of such policies, it will be described succinctly. Given that poor communications and interactions among geologists, mineral processors and mining engineers/operators ca n seriously affect project efficiency and profitability, these interrelated processes with in the mining systems will be analyzed and modelled and the impacts of such situations will be described through a number of anonymous case histories and examples. A synthesis of Dr Deming's management system, includ ing his Four teen P oints and System of Profound Knowledge, will be prese nted .

Controlling noise has proven difficult in mining, and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) remains common. In 2008, a South African Mine Health and Safety Council study focused on small- to medium-sized mines in relation to the milestones set by the industry to prevent NIHL. An evaluation of the compliance of ten diamond, sand, aggregate and Ready mix concrete mines and production sites with standards, legislation and best practice guidelines relating to NIHL prevention was conducted, using a noise compliance audit tool. The findings indicated that all mines surveyed had poor compliance with the international standards, compliance with International Standards Organization standards being the poorest. There was a clear distinction between the small and the medium-sized mines in their compliance with local standards and legislation (ranging from 14 per cent to 66 per cent). The areas of best compliance were audiology and medical examinations. The lower-than-expected compliance was largely attributable to shortcomings in hearing conservation programmes for occupational noise. Initiation of remedial practices in the small- to medium-scale mining sector to facilitate improvements in NIHL prevention and compliance with standards and legislation is recommended. Silicon metal as a commodity material is produced by carbothermic reduction of quartz in electric submerged arc furnaces, where CO2 forms as a by-product. Since 1997 the Norwegian Ferroalloy Producers Association have been engaged in research programmes aiming for reduced CO2-emissions associated with fossil carbon in their processes. One important issue has been to study how charcoal and wood chips perform compared to coal and coke in the silicon process. The ability of the carbon-rich reduction materials to react with SiO-gas is commonly assumed to be of large importance to the performance of the process. Based on laboratory experiments with different carbon materials, combined with estimation of parameters in a mathematical model of the reaction between carbon and SiO-gas, a foundation for a theoretical study of the performance of the carbon materials in a silicon furnace is established.

In July 1997, Kvaerner Environmental signed a unique contract with Echo Bay Alaska called the Transfer Risk and Accelerate Closure (TRAC). The contract called for Kvaerner to assume the responsibilities and obligations associated with closeout of the Alaska-Juneau (A-J) Mine. Kvaerner is an international engineering and construction company with global interdisciplinary experience in the mining industry and environmental remediation. Echo Bay’s requirements called for Kvaerner to: •Provide a fixed price for closure with no change orders. •Negotiate, prepare and implement a final closeout plan as outlined by Echo Bay. •Complete a closure program that exceeded current regulatory requirements. •Improve, expand and maintain a proactive public and community relations program. •Hire Echo Bay employees where possible. •Provide adequate performance guarantees and judicial relief of environmental claims.

The scope of this paper is to introduce a mathematical model based on matrix algebra in order to determine similitude quantities, which can be arranged in specific formats to simulate the field conditions and associated behaviour. The formulation of a typical mathematical model applicable to Geomechanics is demonstrated here. The examples provided are intended to facilitate comprehension and application of the proposed model in practice.

Lead Tariff.--The full House Ways and Means Committee approved H.R. 6089 which will have the effect of reducing the tariff on unwrought lead to 3% ad valorem, with a floor duty of 1.0625 cents per pound, compared with the currently effective rate of 3.5% ad valorem. Consideration is also being given to tariff rates on imports of red lead and litharge from Mexico. A consortium of domestic producers has appealed to the Office of the Special Trade Representative (STR) requesting a return to tariff schedules which were in effect prior to the concessions made effective on January 1. Mexican producers have filed a proposal in favor of lower duties, and the matter now awaits a ruling by the STR. Ferrous Scrap Exports.--After holding public hearings and receiving public comments in May, the Department of Commerce announced that it would not institute formal monitoring of ferrous scrap exports, as requested by the Ferrous Scrap Consumers Coalition. The Department said, however, that it would follow the trend of scrap exports and prices. Ferrous scrap prices are currently low and supplies are reported to be adequate.

This paper deals with the influence from blast induced stress waves on the performance of shotcrete support in the Kiirunavaara mine. Time histories of stress waves from blasting were obtained from measurements during production blasts in the mine, followed by failure mapping. A finite element model, consisting of beam and spring elements, was used to calculate the shotcrete response to vibrations from blasting. The modelling approach was similar to that of a building during an earthquake, with accelerations measured in-situ used as loads. The analysis showed that the calculated adhesive stresses exceeded the strength in the interface between rock and shotcrete near to the blasted ring. It also indicated that tensile rock failure did occur. These types of failure will presumably result in ejection of joint defined rock blocks or rock slabs and will require a ductile support, such as fibre reinforced shotcrete. The predicted failure was confirmed by the mapping, which also showed that the zone of failed shotcrete was much larger in areas with plain shotcrete compared to areas with reinforced shotcrete. L’influence de l’onde de pression générée par les sautages à la mine de fer de Kiruna sur la performance du béton projeté est étudiée dans le présent article. Les ondes créées par les sautages ont été enregistrées et les domages résultants ont été cartographiés. La réponse du béton projeté aux vibrations de sautage est étudiée à l’aide d’un modèle d’éléments finis, constitué de poutres et de ressorts. L’approche est similaire à celle d’un immeuble subissant un tremblement de terre, avec les accélérations internes utilisées comme charges. L’analyse montre qu’à proximité des sautages, la contrainte adhésive dépasse la résistance de l’interface roche-béton. L’analyse confirme aussi l’existence de ruptures en tension. Ces types de rupture induisent probablement l’éjection des blocks définis par les structures du massif rocheux et requierent un support ductil, comme du béton projeté renforcé par exemple. Le type de rupture est confirmé par les observations de terrain, qui montrent aussi une extension plus importante des domages lorsque le béton projeté n’est pas renforcé. In diesem Konferenzbeitrag geht es um den Einfluss, der aus einer Sprengung hervorgerufenen Schwingungswellen auf die Ausführung der Spritzbetonverstärkung in dem Kiirunavaara Bergwerk. Die Aufzeichnungen der Schwingungswellen von Sprengungen gemäß einer Fehlerkartierung beziehen sich auf Messungen, die während der Sprengungen durchgeführt wurden. Ein Finite Elemente Modell, bestehend aus Stab- und Federelementen, wurde für die Berechnung der Spritzbetondeformation in Bezug auf die Schwingungen aus Sprengungen angewendet. Die Modellierungsmethode war ähnlich der eines Gebäudes während eines Erdbebens anhand der gemessenen Beschleunigungen vor Ort, die als Lasten benutzt wurden. Die Untersuchung hat gezeigt, dass die berechnete Haftspannung größer war als die Festigkeit in der Verbindung zwischen Gestein und Spritzbeton in der Nähe des Sprengungscentrums. Die Analyse hat gezeigt, dass die Zugfestigkeit des Gesteins versagte. Diese Arten von Versagen werden als Folge der Herausnahme von Gesteinsbrocken oder Gesteinsplatten erklärt und benötigen eine faserverstärkte Spritzbeton. Das vorausgesagte Versagen bestätigte sich beim Kartieren, welches auch zeigte, dass die Zone des versagenden Spritzbetons in Bereichen mit unverstärktem Spritzbeton viel größer war als in Bereichen mit armierten Spritzbeton.

Several primary ingot producers have introduced price changes for July. Howmet Aluminum Corp., Revere Copper and Brass, Inc. and the Anaconda Co, will increase late-July prices of 99.5 percent unalloyed aluminum ingot by 3 cents to 56 cents per pound, Prior to this, Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. had advanced June ingot values by 4 cents to 57 cents and Consolidated Aluminum Corp., 4.5 cents to 57.5 cents. Domestic merchants held June quotes at a range nearing 50-50.8 cents per pound. ANTIMONY Although NL Industries, since April of this year, stopped publishing prices for RMM and Lone Star antimony grade, values of domestically-refined antimony in alloy are being made available to industry, The current price of this material is $1.75 per pound of antimony contained in alloy, New York dealer-marketed metal was available in June at $1 -13-$1 .20 per pound. Important industrial uses of antimony are for flame retardants, storage batteries, chemicals, pigments, rubber, plastics, glass, ceramics and machinery.
