Water sprays are a common method used to reduce particulate matter (PM) emissions. Various factors such as wettability, surface area coverage, fine particle engulfment rates, interparticle adhesion forces, suppressant penetration and suppressant longevity have all been suggested as critical factors in achieving effective PM control. However, it has not been established which of these factors are the most important. Experimental work indicated that suppressant penetration is the most critical of these factors. The length of time after application that suppressants were effective was also improved by using hygroscopic reagents that retained moisture to prevent evaporation. Maximizing suppressant penetration and improving suppressant longevity led to an average 86% reduction in PM10 concentrations in laboratory dust tower tests.

As mining operations in the United States (US) have become more productive, controlling the dust exposure of mine workers has become more challenging. In response, US mining operations are applying basic controls at elevated levels and are looking to emerging control tech­nologies in an effort to better control airborne respirable dust levels. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts research to develop and/or improve control technologies that reduce the respirable dust exposure of workers in underground coal mines. The goals of this research involve optimizing the use of water sprays and ventilating air, as well as, evaluating emerging control tech­nologies. An overview of dust controls typically utilized in underground US coal mines will be provided. An update on ongoing PRL research efforts that are evaluating new control technologies will also be presented.

A new type of steady-state thermal conductivity apparatus is presented and described. Results of measurements on Berea sandstone, Solehofen limestone, Bandera sandstone and Bakelite are presented. The measurements were made in a two-hour period at temperatures up to 80C and axial stress to 125 bars. Results show that the thermoelectric heat pump and tbermistor-controlled electric heater can be used in a steady-state apparatus for measuring thermal conductivity of mck. Steady-state is reached within two hours. With Urethane foam insulation, not more than 3 per cent of heat is lost by radial flaw. The apparatus can be used as a comparator or for absolute thermal conductivity determinations. INTRODUCTION Calculations of heat flow through the earth, both for scientific purposes and engineering design, require thermal-conductivity data on rock. However, the high variability of rock often makes handbook thermal-conductivity data of little value. For engineering purposes in particular, it is desirable to have measured data on samples of the rock mass under study. Laboratory methods for measuring thermal conductivity of rock use either time-dependent1-3 or steady - state temperatures .4,5 The time -dependent (transient) techniques give thermal diffusivity from which thermal conductivity can be calculated if the specific heat and density of the sample is known. Most transient techniques require lengthy and involved sample preparation. Also, the accuracy tends to be low. Steady-state techniques are more exact and are the most commonly used. The steady-state methods, however, also have their difficulties. A long time is often required to reach steady state, troubles have been encountered in establishing good thermal contact between the heating and cooling elements and the rock sample, and unaccounted-for heat losses are difficult to prevent. In this paper we present a description of a new type of steady-state thermal conductivity apparatus. With it, measurements have been made in two hours at temperatures up to 80C and axial stress to 125 bars. Sample preparation is simple and no thermal conductivity standard is needed.6 APPARATUS Our steady-state apparatus is an improvement . over the conduction pile used by Zierfuss and van der vliet4 and Somerton.5 A linear heat flux is established through a conduction pile consisting of the rock sample and a standard material of known thermal conductivity in series. The clay slime generatea in many sand washing operations is usually very difficult to de-water. Treatment of these slimes is often limited by economic considerations and the properties of the solids to a gravity-driven process. The moisture characteristics of kaolinitic slimes from two different sand washing operations were measured.From these curves, equilibrium moisture contents for sedimentation and for drainage were calculated using the methods of soil physics. The validity of these calculations were confirmed by column experiments.The results show that the increased de-watering to be gained by drainage, as compared with sedimentation, is significant. Furthermore, observed rates of outflow indicate that water can be removed considerably morerapidly when drainage is possible.The practical application of these results to the dewatering of clay slimes is discussed.

This paper describes the process of scraper winch pull force measurement and shows the results of the actual winch pull force in extreme stall situations as well as during the face and gulley cleaning. It was found that by slowing down the motor and causing it to slip, torque up to 3.5 times higher than the nominal can be developed, resulting in the same increase of winch pull force. On the other hand, measurements of the actual force needed for cleaning of the face and the gully have shown that the currently used winches are too powerful. The extra torque that can be developed by the already too powerful winch motor poses a significant danger and necessitates the implementation of measures that will eliminate this risk.

A cobalt/manganese occurrence in Clark County, Nevada was the subject of a site-specific mineral investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1988-90. The study site is in the northern part of the Million Hills (wilderness) study area which is administered by the Bureau of Land Management. Field work during a period of one week consisted of geological mapping and sampling of workings and outcrops, and geochemical and geophysical surveys conducted on four transects totalling 7,600 ft. Although the concentrations of cobalt (0.1 to 0.5 percent) detected in samples from the fissure zones are within the range of grades associated with world-class economic deposits, the volume of material enriched in cobalt at the study site is insufficient to warrant consideration as a potential resource. Concentrations of manganese, nickel, copper, lead, zinc, barium, and thallium, although anomalous, are too low for economic consideration. At the study site, workings consist of three trenches and nine pits. The exploration history is unknown, and no production is reported.

Keywords: FC mold, Argon, Magnetic, Solidification Fluid flow plays a significant role for steel surface quality in continuous casting. Although water models are able to model fluid flow, the flow pattern is not of practical interest since the moving solidifying shell cannot be accounted. Computer modeling has become a popular and dependable tool to analyze the complex phenomena occurring in continuous casting. In this numerical simulation we coupled momentum and energy equations considering the solidification of steel along with turbulence ?-e model. The vertical bending mold is equipped with bifurcated nozzle with 15 degrees of port angle. FC mold is supplied with DC induced magnetic fields. Influence of argon and magnetic fields on molten steel flow and heat transfer is investigated by solving momentum equations adding source terms due to multiphase ? magneto hydrodynamics. The results show that magnetic fields reduce the jet velocity from port by lower magnetic core induced field but the influence on meniscus velocity is complex to describe. Magnetic fields increase surface temperature and homogenize its distribution on surface and inside a mold.

The McMurray formation in the Athabasca oil sands deposits of Northern Alberta is part of the world?s second largest proven crude oil reserves. The formation is characterized by stratigraphic layers that correspond to three different depositional environments: Marine, Estuarine and Fluvial facies. Resource estimation for oil sands has traditionally relied on polygonal and inverse distance schemes. These techniques are simple and straightforward in practice, but they do not permit reliable uncertainty assessment. This paper describes the modeling of the McMurray formation using modern geostatistical techniques. Geostatistical modeling should be performed within homogeneous geological facies. The methodology for geostatistical simulation within each of the identified facies involves: (1) assessing the most appropriate stratigraphic transformation for optimisation of the correlation structure, (2) determining representative distributions with declustering and debiasing techniques, (3) modeling spatial continuity of the bitumen grade, fines grade, water saturation and other petrophysical variables, (4) performing estimation and cross validation as checks against simulation results, (5) performing simulation for uncertainty quantification of bitumen and fines grade, and (6) model checking of simulation results against the input data and comparisons against the kriged models. These steps are described in detail. The application of these models for uncertainty quantification in support of resource classification is also discussed.

This article explores the Fray Farthing Chen (FFC) Cambridge process, a novel method for the electrochemical deoxidation of metal oxides in molten salt, discovered at the University of Cambridge in 1997. The process was hailed as a highly promising, potentially low cost, novel method for the production of titanium metal direct from its oxides. The article should inform researchers in the field of some of the challenges in the commercialization of a novel, high profile process involving multiple stakeholders. The author, former senior process engineer at British Titanium Plc, the company originally tasked with commercializing titanium production via the FFC Cambridge process, reviews the latest literature and discusses past and present progress in the pursuit of low cost titanium metal via this process. In recent years, economies of scale have continued to drive copper projects to larger throughputs to offset depleting lower grade resources. A decade ago there were only a small number of projects that stretched beyond 100,000 Mtpd throughput rates. Nowadays and moving forward virtually all the major copper projects are sized beyond this, with throughput rates up to 250,000 Mtpd now under evaluation for a number of key projects in Chile and Peru. This paper explores the development from the 160 m3 flotation cells, through to the 257 m3 cells and nowadays to the 660 m3 machines. The contributions of specific copper concentrators to this growth phase are reviewed herein. The historical basis of flotation machine scale-up is also briefly discussed. Metallurgical results as well as layout, maintenance and operational aspects are highlighted.

Soon after the Rosebery concentrator commenced operations in 1936, an investigation was begun in an attempt to discover a substitute for cyanide in lead flotation. Cyanide is an excellent depressant for zinc and iron, but it also powerfully depresses the copper, silver and gold bearing minerals present in Rosebery ore, thus allowing them to pass through to the zinc concentrate or final residue where they are of little or no value.The investigation was not entirely successful, but it did indicate that sodium bisulphite or sodium sulphite could be used as a depressant for zinc without depressing the copper, silver and gold bearing minerals. The sulphites were, however, much inferior to cyanide as apyrite depressant.At about this time, I. W. Wark, using the captive bubble technique, had shown that, at the concentrations normally used, sodium aerofloat is not a promoter for pyrite or galena in alkaline solutions (see his book "Principles of Flotation", p. 188). Some preliminary tests on the production of a copper concentrate from Rosebery ore were therefore carried out using sodium sulphite as depressant and sodium aerofloat as promoter.The results of this work were promising but, since Rosebery ore usually carries only about 0·5% copper, there did not seem to be much incentive to carry the work further. The structure of the Bulli coal seam at Appin Colliery was detailed by the seismic reflection method. This unusual application of the seismic method was possible because there is a reflector near the seam as was revealed during exploration for petroleum in an area north-west of Appin. The reflector, which was at a depth of 1,500 ft, was shallow by normal reflection survey standards. Measurement of the seismic velocity at two ventilation shafts showed that the reflector was probably the Bulli coal seam. Accurate depth control was established from previous drilling results.INTRODUCTIONAppin Colliery, situated on the Southern Coalfield of N.S.W. (Fig. 1), is being developed to supply coking coal to the Port Kembla steelworks of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd. The colliery is mechanized and a detailed knowledge of structure, particularly faulting, is important in planning the workings.The Bulli seam, which is approximately 9 ft thick, and between 1,500 ft and 1,800 ft below the surface, is worked in the colliery. It is the uppermost member of the Permian Coal Measures and is overlain by Triassic rocks, which consist of thick sandstone beds containing beds of coloured shales, and which are subdivided into the Narrabeen Group, the Hawkesbury Sandstone, and the Wianamatta Group.In the early stages of development of the colliery, surface geological mapping and diamond drilling provided information on structure. Generalized results of the mapping are shown on Fig. 2. Drilling indicated that the physical and chemical properties of the Bulli seam are relatively constant, and that the seam is nearly horizontal, the average dipbeing about 1 in 25 to the west.

Under contract from U. S. Bureau of Mines, Harza Engineering Company in cooperation with Eastern Associated Coal Corporation, conducted a ground control study of two mechanized longwall panels at the Federal Number 2 Mine. The mine is located in Northern West Virginia, and the coal is mined from the Pittsburgh Coal Seam. The prime objective of the study was to collect data which will aid in the proper selection of the longwall supports system and to control the entry caving problem. Instruments installed in the mine were borehole pressure cells, convergence recorders, roof sag recorders, horizontal roof strain indicators, differential floor movement systems, and lateral roof and floor movement systems. Instruments installed on the surface, above the instrumented longwall panels, consisted of slope indicator system, vertical bed settlement probe system and shear displacement detecting system. A comprehensive surface subsidence study was conducted in conjunction with the instrumentation. In addition to the instrumentation and monitoring, special tests were conducted to determine the bearing capacity of the roof and floor rocks, in situ modulus of coal, roof and floor rocks, and response of borehole pressure cells to ground stress. Cores of coal measure rocks were collected for the physical property tests. Face observations were made to detect various roof behavior parameters under the different jack setting pressures. This report essentially describes the instrumentation work, special tests and presents the data collected.

Investigation of the Classification Operation in a Coal Pulverising Vertical Spindle Mill Coal pulverisation in power plants is a major electrical energy consumer. In 2006 more than 41 per cent of world electricity generation was from coal where pulverisers use 0.5 to 1 per cent of gross generation. Therefore, pulverisers are an important target for optimisation not only for reducing costs of power generation but also for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. A better understanding of the operation of pulverisers is an essential requirement for their optimisation. However, little information is available, other than operating experience, on the performance of pulverisers and how these react to changes in operational variables. This study investigates the effect of changes in coal and airflow feed rates on the classification performance that occurs in an industrial scale ball-and-race vertical spindle mill in which the pulverisation and classification processes are linked together due to the separator classifier being an integral component within the pulveriser. In order to decouple the breakage and classification processes, samples were cut from upward flowing streams through sampling ports drilled on the pulveriser body at different locations. Specific sampling tools were developed. Samples collected from the pulveriser were size and density fractioned to distinguish the differences in behaviour of the components, namely coal and mineral matter. The coal flow rates on dry basis within the mill and around the separator classifier were calculated by mass balancing the multi-component data. The difference in classification behaviour of components during pneumatic transport was confirmed. The response of the circulating load in the mill (~600 to ~1100 per cent) as well as the dependency of fineness of the streams to the operating variables was demonstrated. The approach taken in this study has proved that development of a classification model for a vertical spindle mill pulverising non-homogeneous materials, eg coal, requires treating these materials as multi-component/composite substances.

Catastrophic rock slope failures have caused destructive tsunamis in Norwegian fjords. At the Åknes rock slope the tsunami generating potential is large due to the potential large volume involved in a possible catastrophic failure. Widening of the upper crack has been recorded since 1986, and in recent years, a quite extensive investigation and monitorin campaign has been conducted. Data from some of these investigations are presented and analysed with respect to a preliminary evaluation of the stability of the slope.

Measurement of gamma radiation occurring in nature to characterize geological formations has been widely recognized in mineral exploration. Different methods and apparatuses have been developed for drill hole logging purposes. Geological formations vary in amount of naturally emitted gamma radiation. A gamma signature from a geological formation is captured by utilizing different types of gamma detectors. A natural gamma radiation detector (NGRD) can be used to control mining whenever there is a significant difference between the radiation levels in the mineral or ore being mined and the waste materials surrounding the ore. Surface miners, such as the one shown in Figure 1, can precisely control the elevation of the cutter as the machine moves over the surface of the formation. This type of machine is predominantly used in selective mining operations, e.g. surface coal mining. If there is a means to know the position of the cutter relative to the interface between the ore and waste, the miner can recover all or most all of the valuable mineral with very little out-of-seam dilution. This paper discusses the results of a successful application of gamma detectors to control a surface miner at one of North American Coal Corporations? locations - Red Hills Mine. The mine has nine coal seams in total with thicknesses ranging from 12? to 60?. The bottom six seams (Figure 2) are minable. The mine has complex geology and a significant amount of annual rainfall (4.7 ft). The mine produces approximately 3.5 million tons of coal and about 40 bcy of overburden per year. The operation utilizes diverse mining equipment including Dragline Marion 8200, electric shovel P&H 2800, Caterpillar end dump trucks CAT 785 and 789; bulldozers CAT D11, D10, D8, and D6. Coal is mainly extracted by utilizing a Wirtgen SM 4200 surface miner that is loading CAT 785 trucks with high volume coal bodies and payload of 150 t. Operational cutting depth is 24 inches with maximum cutting depth of 36 inches. Surface miner operators determine a cutting depth based on multiple cues, the most important being visual observations of a coal seam being cleaned or mined. The cleaning process involves removal of the last foot of waste material covering the coal seam. This is one of two critical phases in the coal extraction process. If, during the cleaning process, an operator sets a cutting head too deep, valuable product is wasted. If it is set too shallow, waste material is left to be mined with the coal. The second critical phase occurs in the last cut on the interface between the coal and waste material at the bottom of the coal seam. If the cutting head goes deeper than favorable, then waste material is delivered to a power plant.

This study was done to evaluate the economic and technical considerations of using pozzolanic materials in order to guide cement manufacturers, pozzolan producers, contractors, Government organizations, and others interested in concrete construction work. Five hundred and thirty-eight samples of pozzolanic raw materials were taken from 27 central and western States. These samples were evaluated by petrographic procedures, and about 200 of the most promising ones were given a complete series of physical tests (American Society for Testing and Materials) to evaluate further their suitability as a pozzolan. This investigation showed that deposits of natural pozzolan materials were widely dispersed in the central and western parts of the United States but that exploiting these deposits would depend on whether they could compete economically with an increasingly abundant industrial waste product--fly ash.

This is an initial progress report on a theoretical study of the iron blast furnace. The purpose is to develop a thermochemical model that will simulate mathematically a real furnace. An analysis is made of the behavior of a hypothetical furnace, operating adiabatically on pure ferric oxide, graphitic carbon, and dry air. Relationships are derived for carbon consumption, gas composition, and reaction temperature for a furnace operating at steady state, and in which the smelting rate is slow enough for the gas and solids to approach thermal and chemical equilibrium. Analyses are made for two contrasting types of gas flow: (1) Nonturbulent flow, having no vertical mixing; and (2) turbulent flow, having perfect mixing during each step of the process. It is shown that some vertical mixing is essential for complete reduction of ferrous oxide and that the extent of vertical mixing is one of the critical factors in the behavior of the furnace, This analysis indicates that the thermochemical relationships in a blast furnace can probably be best simulated by a finite series of gas-solid reactors through which gas and solids flow countercurrently and in which the temperature and composition of gases and solids are assumed to be uniform. Any degree of vertical mixing can be approximated by the proper choice of the number of reactors.

This report presents the results of a study of the overturning Stability of Front End Loaders and the development of an Obstacle Detector to warn of Obstacles in the blind regions of the vehicle. The contributing factors have been identified, the FEL stability characteristics have been determined and six overturn warning indicators were fabricated and two were field tested in a mine operation over an extended time period. A simplified overturn indicator, based on the principle of sensing wheel load, was designed, constructed and field tested. The principle was demonstrated to be sound, however, the method of sensing wheel load must be revised. An obstacle detector capable of detecting a man sized target at ranges of two feet to one hundred feet was designed. A "Breadboard" device utilizing existing microwave devices was constructed and tested successfully.

This literature survey consists of references dealing with gaseous state thermal decomposition reactions of organic nitrogen and sulfur compounds. The reference source for the survey was the Chemical Abstracts from 1930 to 1956, inclusive. Original articles were not studied. The starting date was set at 1930 because previous to this time much of the work is questionable. This report is in three parts: Part I lists nitrogen compounds; Part II, sulfur compounds; and Part III, compounds containing both nitrogen and sulfur. The organization of the classes of compounds is alphabetical: Part I - amides, amines, amino acids, ammonia, azides, azines, azo compounds, heterocyclic nltrogen compounds, hydrazine, nitrates, nitriles, nitrites, nitro compounds and miscellaneous nitrogen compounds; Part II - disulfides, sulfides (including double and triple sulfides), thiols, thiophenes and xanthates; Part III - thioacid amides, thiazoles, thiocyanates and thiuram disulfides. A class formula is included with each class name. The R's used in these class formulas may refer to hydrogen or to the same or different radicals when more than one R appears.
