The present sampling procedure for evaluating the rock dusting conditions in a coal mine is time consuming. This study considers means by which this procedure could be simplified. Surveys were conducted in six coal mines in Pennsylvania to determine the in¬combustible content of the deposited dust. Some 2,000 samples were analyzed and statistically evaluated. It is suggested that the mean incombustible content could be obtained with fewer samples and smaller samples without greatly increasing the sampling error.

The Upper Reach segment of the Northeast Interceptor Sewer (NEIS) is a3.2-km-long tunnel excavated in interbedded marine sedimentary deposits with approximately 40 m of cover. The tunnel was initially classified by Cal/OSHA as “potentially gassy.” During excavation, high levels of hydrogen sulfide and methane were encountered, prompting Cal/OSHA to reclassify the tunnel as “gassy.” In addition, the tunnel excavation encountered an abandoned, 100-year-old water tunnel known as the “Narrows Gallery.” This existing tunnel was completely full of water and under 30 m of hydrostatic head. This paper will discuss the unanticipated difficulties and design solutions implemented to construct a gassy tunnel exposed to high volumes of water.

In response to the mandates in the MINER Act of 2006, NIOSH conducted refuge alternatives research that included characterizing the utility, practicality and survivability of refuge chambers and outby safe havens. NIOSH also prepared and delivered a report to Congress in late December 2007 that summarized the findings of the research, included recommendations concerning the design and performance specifications for refuge alternatives, and focused on specific information that could inform the regulatory process on refuge alternatives. This document highlights NIOSH's research and recommendations concerning refuge alternatives, survivability evaluations of refuge chambers, and presents a brief review of the current deployment of refuge chambers in underground coal mines in the U.S. The research has lead to the conclusion that refuge alternatives have the potential for saving the lives of mine workers if they are part of a comprehensive escape and rescue plan, and if appropriate training is provided. "The oxidative leaching of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions has been evaluated using electro-analytical techniques. The anodic dissolution process has been established to be a seven-electron transfer process under nitrogen in ammonia–ammonium sulphate solutions and ammonia–ammonium carbonate solutions. The number of electrons transferred in the carbonate and sulphate salts suggests that the sulphur is oxidised to a thiosulphate intermediate and the copper and iron released as Cu+ and Fe2+. The Cu+ and Fe2+ is subsequently oxidised in solution in non-Faradaic reactions. The deportment of Fe2+ and S2O32- is affected by choice of the ammonium salt used in the leaching process. In the perchlorate salt, only five electrons are transferred, however observations made on the mineral surface after leaching do not support the formation of elemental sulphur. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy analysis of the mineral surface suggest presence of an iron–sulphur surface layer completely free of copper under the ammonia–ammonium sulphate conditions, an iron-rich surface layer under ammonia–ammonium perchlorate solutions and absence of surface layer build up under ammonia–ammonium carbonate solutions. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical processes for copper extraction provide a viable route to recover the metal from mixed and low-grade ores, as well as overcome the environmental challenges faced by the traditional pyrometallurgical processes. Chalcopyrite is not only the most abundant of the copper sulphides, but also the most stable, making it recalcitrant to hydrometallurgical processes. Hence, hydrometallurgical processing of chalcopyrite continues to be an attractive area of research due to the vaguely understood surface chemistry of the mineral in different aqueous media. Different approaches to hydrometallurgical treatment of chalcopyrite can be carried out. These include thermal treatment prior to leaching, direct leaching and direct electrochemical leaching (Venkatachalam, 1991). Direct leaching of chalcopyrite can be carried out in various solution systems, as reviewed by Roman and Benner (1973) and Venkatachalam (1991). Ammoniacal solutions are attractive and effective lixiviants that form stable amine complexes with some base-metal cations while rejecting iron. Leaching of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions in the presence of an oxidant is possible due to the stabilisation of copper(I) and copper (II) by ammonia at elevated pH levels. In oxygenated ammonia solutions, it has been suggested that chalcopyrite dissolves according to Equation 1 (Beckstead & Miller, 1977a):"

Por lo que es necesario eliminar gran parte del agua colectada por las lluvias a través de las plantas de tratamiento de aguas de exceso que garanticen los contenidos metálicos por debajo de los limites máximos permisibles. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe la aplicación de un modelo matemático para comprender, manejar y optimizar las diferentes variables que afectan al proceso del tratamiento. El modelo está basado en los fenómenos de transporte de solución a través de la pila y la cinética de cianuración de los metales contenidos en el mineral, el cual permitirá simular los cambios en los parámetros operacionales y metalúrgicos como diferentes tipos de mineral, flujos entre plantas Merrill Crowe y CIC, un mejor tratamiento de excesos de agua para minimizar su efecto en la producción de oro y el manejo óptimo de soluciones y predicciones a futuro de producción de oro.

In October 2006, a 7m Double Shield TBM, boring through very poor volcanic formations, was pushed back by fluid mud, which presence had not been detected during previous field investigations, due to the high covers characterizing the majority of the tunnel axis. The present work describes the investigations made to gain better knowledge of the conditions in front and all around the TBM, the special measures implemented, the exploratory and bypass tunnels excavated, the extraordinary occurrences came true during the execution of these tunnels, the drainage campaigns, the design of the chamber excavated to free the TBM, the dismounting and restarting of the TBM.

Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) is considered carcinogenic after prolonged exposure. With increasing use of diesel-powered mining equipment in underground mines, miner?s exposure to DPM has been increasing. Most studies on the issue has been DPM control measures with few studies on diesel exhaust propagation patterns after leaving the tailpipes. This study uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to investigate the airflow pattern in an underground metal/nonmetal mine for a single heading. Several high DPM concentration areas are identified in the study and common practices for compliance are suggested. Airflow and DPM distribution are compared between blowing and exhausting face ventilation systems. Suggestions are also provided for the protection of miners in the face area.

The safety record of the metal mining and milling industries in 1965 is reviewed by the Bureau of Mines. The overall injury-frequency rate of 23.77 per million man-hours was 5 percent lower than in 1964 and was the lowest annual rate in a statistical history beginning with 1931. The injury-severity rate of 3,521 days lost per million man-hours in 1965 represented a 5-percent improvement over 1964. However, the total of 3,825 disabling work injuries comprised 61 fatal and 3,764 nonfatal injuries, one and 92 more, respectively, than in 1964. At primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants, the injury-frequency rate of 8.97 per million man-hours in 1965 was 13 percent lower, but the severity rate percent higher than in 1964. these plants in 1965, 4 more of 1,173 days lost per million man-hours was 17 There were 12 fatal and 971 nonfatal injuries at and 28 fewer, respectively, than in 1964.

To contemplate the vast amount of investment capital required and the resultant beneficial distribution of these billions of dollars for labour, transportation, supplies, taxes and dividends, challenges the imagination. It is the purpose of this paper, (a) to trace the development of the industry since its formative period to the present; (b) to discuss the current situation and problems; and ( c) to attempt to peer into the hazy future. This paper describes studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines to achieve its goal of developing methods for increased recovery and utilization of valuable constituents in a wide variety of domestic and industrial wastes, In this particular study, 36 units of obsolete electronic equipment from military aircraft were disassembled into their modular components by hand to determine materials distribution. Further modular disassembly into individual parts was used to identify metal composition. After identifying the metals in some of the more difficult to dismantle modules, similar modules were grouped together, shredded, mechanically separated, and using metal composition data from hand separation, classified along with the hand-separated materials. Although this equipment is normally classified as law-value iron-bearing aluminum, data were obtained that indicated the potential for moderately higher value classification. The electronic units were classified as to precious metals, copper, iron, and aluminum contents, and scrap values were estimated.

Elemental analysis of slurry streams using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) has long been employed. However, detector technology has limited the application of XRF devices. Using detector technology employed on NASA's Mars Pathfinder to analyze soil samples, Process Control, Inc. has developed an on-line analyzer to mount on a sampling system. The prototype XRF elemental analyzer was installed at Detroit Edison's Monroe Power Plant in January, 1998 and has been employed to monitor feedstock quality. A slurry system has been developed for flotation control. This paper describes the testing of the analyzer using the new, draft ISO standard for evaluating the performance of online analyzers (ISO/DIS15239).

This evaluation of the sulfurous acid process for the production of metallurgical-grade alumina is the first of a series concerning various known methods of extracting alumina from low-grade aluminous materials and was undertaken to permit comparison with other processes. In the process with which this Bureau of Mines report is concerned, calcined clay is leached under pressure with 20 percent sulfurous acid and then filtered to remove a siliceous residue. The aluminum sulfite remaining in the filtrate is precipitated as a monobasic sulfite which, together with iron sulfite, is then decomposed under pressure to form a crude alumina hydrate and iron oxide. This intermediate product is purified in a modified Bayer process to yield alumina suitable for electrolytic reduction to aluminum. A study estimate (16)3 is used for these evaluations. The capital cost, not including land, is estimated at $95,701,600 on a Marshall and Stevens index basis of 240.0 for a plant producing 1,000 tons a day of alumina or 350,000 tons a year. The annual operating cost for this size plant is estimated at $22,831,100 or $65.23 per ton of alumina using clay at $1 per ton. Depreciation and local taxes are included in the estimate, but profit and Federal taxes are not considered.

In the latter role, they serve as agents to enable mankind to produce metals, build roads, and drive tunnels. In other words, to provide those materials, services, and infrastructure without which the modern world could not exist.

A method for the determination of microgram quantities of uranium in leachates from low grade uranium ores is described. Solubilized manium is purified by transfer to an organic solvent by a selective solvent extractionprocedure using tributyl phosphate, iso-octane, and aluminium nitrate. The organic phase is mixed with scintillation fiuors in toluene and the radioactive decay determined in a liquid scintillation counter. The method is sensitive and reproducible in the range 3-30 µg uranium.

The FactSage® package consists of a series of information, database and calculation modules that enable one to access pure substances and solution databases and perform thermochemical equilibrium calculations. FactSage was originally founded by process pyrometallurgists and has since expanded its applications to include hydrometallurgy, electrometallurgy, corrosion, glass technology, combustion, ceramics, geology, environmental studies, etc. With the various modules one can perform a wide variety of thermochemical calculations and generate tables and graphs of complex chemical equilibria and phase diagrams for multicomponent systems. This paper presents examples of recent and current developments in FactSage in areas of particular interest to Dr. David Robertson. These include both ferrous and non-ferrous processing, as well as solidification and refining simulation. The paper also includes reference to the Internet Fact-Web education package.

This paper describes the method used for excavating the upper 33m of emergency access shaft E2 for the underground single track tunnel running between Park and Rosebank station of the Gautrain Rapid Rail System. The soil was decomposed shale and diabase from the Witwatersrand Supergroup. The location was in the car park of The Wilds (a public park) in Johannesburg. The method proved very simple and required less complex plant and equipment than normal when excavating the shallow soil sections in shafts. It involves driving steel sheets ahead of the shaft sump into the soils and then excavating inside the ?tub? created by the sheets whilst supporting the sheets above with regularly spaced circular Steel Rings. It is the intent of this paper to discuss the method and design approach to the method. This will be done at the hand of experiences at E2 shaft..
