The use of small diameter cast-in-place bored piles is becoming increasingly popular in the United States. Such inserts are used as conventional load bearing piles, and are generally referred to as pin piles. The other major application is for the in situ reinforcement of soil slopes or excavations. The paper reviews the applications, construction, design and performance of inserts of each type.

A unique judicial opportunity allowed measurement of the response of three cracks in residential structure to blasting for underground aggregate mining. Instrumented cracks were located in the interior basement CMU mortar and upstairs dry wall as well as exterior brickwork. The dynamic environment was unusual. Even though the blasting occurred some 490 m (1600 ft) away, excitation frequencies were unusually high and there were no apparent surface waves. In addition there was no air overpressure wave to produce secondary crack response. As is typical, long term environmental effects produced greater crack response than did the blast induced ground motions.

This report summarizes the incidents that preceded the December 9, 1970, propane-air explosion in Port Hudson, Mo., and then attempts to establish the nature of the explosion from the ensuing events. Special emphasis is given to possible ignition sources, the distribution of flammable vapors, and the analysis of blast damage. Both near-and far-field damage indicated that this explosion may be attributed to the detonation of propane in air with an energy release equivalent to that from about 50 tons of detonating TNT.

Tooth-wear on mining shovels requires continuous monitoring. Worn teeth impede excavation performance, increase energy usage, and increase the risk of lost or broken teeth and adapters. A machine-vision-based automated tooth-wear monitoring system is presented. The system employs a rugged boom or stick-mounted camera to capture images of the shovel teeth. An onboard computer processes the images in real-time to determine the length of each tooth. The current wear state is available via a network-accessible log for on-demand status updates. By continuously recording tooth length changes over time, the logs can be used to estimate wear rates and patterns, permitting comparisons between different G.E.T. configurations, operator behaviour patterns, or material types. This detailed, quantitative data permits site-specific optimizations to wear packages and maintenance scheduling. Automating wear monitoring offers the crucial wear information necessary to minimize maintenance costs and reduce unscheduled downtime. A 37-day field trial in a copper-gold mine demonstrated the ability of the system to measure tooth lengths, compute wear rates, and detect differences in tooth wear based on their position on the bucket.

The obligations of the European Directive 96/82/EC on the control of major accident hazards, the so-called Seveso II Directive, became mandatory within the E u ropean Member States February 3, 1999. Explosive products have been included within the Seveso II Directive, in the categories of substances capable of generating a major accident. In addition to taking “all measures necessary to prevent major accidents,” explosive manufacturers are also obliged “to limit their consequences for man and the environment.” However, for explosives in particular, no pro c e d u res, nor specific re f e rence values for damage calculation, are given either in the Directive or in the corresponding Italian Legislation, “Ministry of the Environment decree of 20 Oct. 1998.” This article presents a simplified but scientifically rigorous approach for the first approximation calculation of the effects on the surrounding area following an accidental explosion. As an example of the method of calculation, the damage areas in a hypothetical explosives manufacturing facility, as shown in F i g u re 1, will be anal y z e d . Coal is a valuable energy source in New Zealand and has been mined from the West Coast for over 100 years. Stockton Mine is New Zealand's largest opencast coal producer supplying around 1.5 Mt of hard coking and thermal coal to international markets annually. The Stockton Plateau forms an extensive, gently inclined dip slope on erosion resistant Lower Eocene Brunner Coal Measures unconformably overlying basement rocks. The dip slope rises 600 - 1000 masl, locally dissected by fault scarps and present-day fluvial systems, some of which are deeply incised. Within the Mt Augustus Mining Block overburden comprises of a 30 - 40 m thick sequence of fluviatile, coarse to granular coal measure sandstones. High quality coking coal is preserved as a gently dipping, 10 - 12 m thick seam. High and sometimes very steep cliffs of jointed overburden shape the skyline escarpment, above steep forested slopes and gullies. As mining has progressed at Mt Augustus individual coal blocks are progressively becoming more technically challenging. This paper outlines the scientific approach taken by Solid Energy International and mining contractors to carefully unlock many thousands of tons of coal whilst protecting nearby flora and fauna from the impacts of dislodged rock and other blasting side-effects. The strategy involved: an expert-driven onsite risk assessment,formulation of a management plan to manage impacts,conducting an in situ vibration research program, andanalysis of results and operational designs to eliminate potential environmental problems.

Asbestos first became an issue to Minnesota?s iron industry when it was revealed that mineral fibers similar to those in Reserve Mining?s tailings were being found in drinking water for several communities that used Lake Superior as their primary water source. This discovery turned what had largely been an environmental court battle into a case concerning public health. The courts listened to much conflicting and uncertain scientific testimony on the size and distribution of the mineral fibers and on the potential health effects imposed by them. In April 1974, the plant was ordered to shut down by a federal judge but the company quickly appealed the decision. The appeals court granted a stay and ultimately ruled that the plant?s closure could not be justified based on the unknown health effects of the mineral fibers since the consequences of such an action would have immediate and severe social and economic impacts. The plant was allowed to continue operation, but ordered to abate emissions to air around the plant and to switch to a land-based tailings disposal system. Much of the scientific uncertainty and public concern over mineral fibers in Minnesota?s taconite industry remain today. ©2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. "Column flotation has been successfully applied to iron ore concentration since the 1980s with the goal of reducing silica content and allowing for the efficient production of pellet feed. Since then, columns have been widely used in iron ore processing due to: their lower capital and operational costs when compared to conventional cells their ability to generate higher concentrate grades and recoveries.Currently, more than 100 columns have been installed within Brazilian iron ore processing circuits for rougher, cleaner and scavenger duties. Despite it being a well-established approach, several technological advances have improved column design, accessories and performance. The proposed 1.83km long twin bore A3 Hindhead road tunnel planned for contruction in 2008 is being delivered under a Highways Agency Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract. The proposed construction methodology is progressive mechanical excavation of a horseshoe shaped tunnel with shotcrete installed close behind the face using robotic spraying equipment. The tunneling medium is a ‘soft rock’ sandstone for which there was little previous tunneling experience, requiring extensive geotechnical investigations and an innovative approach to lining design. A 240m long portal section though sandy material utilising a steel pipe umbrella is also required. This paper describes the development of the tunnel planning and design including the most recent developments in UK road tunnels, and the innovation included in the ‘permanent’ primary lining design.

The field tests involved ten coal mines in which transients were initiated on the dc system from which the parameters of the dc mine electrical power system could be determined. The data processing involved the use of a Fourier Analyzer to filter noise and fit an exponential curve to the field waveforms. From this data analysis it was possible to find the dc system resistance, inductance and time constant. The survey of nationally recognized laboratories was conducted to establish that the recommended test criteria were practical. The development of test criteria for dc fuses used in mines was based on the measurement of parameters in the field, the survey of testing laboratories, literature searches, laboratory test, etc. A computer program was written to analytically predict the parameters measured in the field. This approach has limitations but reasonable agreement with field results was obtained. A brief laboratory testing program was carried out to verify the practicality of the recommended criteria and establish the accuracy of the conclusions concerning dc fuse performance.

A 3-year study was conducted to evaluate the problems and benefits of using vegetation to stabilize tailing from a potential Minnesota copper-nickel milling operation. The project consisted of three separate investigations: a waste characterization study, a greenhouse study and a field study. With few exceptions, the physical and chemical characteristics of the tai ling were found to lie within the range of properties of Minnesota soils. The tailing lacks organic matter; is deficient in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium; and may contain elevated levels of soluble salts and heavy metals, particularly copper and nickel. Numerous grasses, forbs and woody plants will tolerate the tailing as a rooting medium. Peat incorporation and topsoil dressing provided few benefits to the revegetation process which were not provided by a fertilizer application. With fertilization, grass/legume production in the tailing was comparable to local agricultural yields. Concentration of heavy metals in grasses grown in the tailing were generally below suggested tolerance limits for plants and animal forage. Legumes tended to accumulate higher concentrations of copper and nickel, and metal uptake of most plants was positively correlated with rate of fertilization. Tailing drainage water contained elevated levels of heavy metals, and establishment of vegetation had little effect on the quantity and quality of tailing drainage water. However, topsoil dressing significantly increased drainage water volume when compared to unvegetated control plots. Copper-nickel tailing revegetation recommendations were developed.

This study was conducted to establish the effects of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) system with sintered metal substrate on the concentrations and size distributions of nano and ultrafine aerosols and concentrations of nitric oxides in underground mine air. The study focused on the formation and transformation of nucleation mode particles in mine air under prevailing test conditions. Experimental work was conducted in the NIOSH Diesel Laboratory at the Lake Lynn Laboratory experimental mine, a facility developed to allow evaluation of control technologies directly in underground conditions. The DPF system was examined for four repeatable steady-state engine modes using a naturally aspirated mechanically controlled Isuzu C240 diesel engine fueled with ultralow sulfur fuel. The engine coupled to an eddy-current dynamometer was operated in the underground drift with tightly controlled ventilation. Measurements upwind and downwind of the exhaust system discharge were used to quantify the effects of the DPF system on the mine air. A baseline was established using a standard muffler. The study showed that sintered metal DPF systems reduced the total mass of aerosols in the mine air by more than ten-fold when compared to a muffler. The nucleation mode aerosols (50dem<40 nm) in mine air were found to be strongly influenced by engine operating mode. The concentration of nucleation mode aerosols was found to be significantly higher for high-load modes than for low-load modes. The muffler and DPF system resulted in comparable total nitrogen oxides (NOx) concentrations. However, the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) fraction of the total NOx was found to be substantially higher for both systems for low-load modes than for high-load modes.

The Netherlands RandstadRail project makes use of a large range of sophisticated geotechnical techniques to allow a shield driven tunnel to approach the central station of Rotterdam. This paper describes the construction of three deep excavation pits constructed with 1.2 m and 1.5 m thick diaphragm walls. Besides the presentation of the actual diaphragm wall activities special consideration is given to the break-in and break-out situations of the TBM into the deep excavations pits using sealing blocks and partly glass fibre reinforcement in the diaphragm walls.

This paper describes the location and general features of the ?Red Bed? or sandstone copper deposits in southeastern Colorado and New Mexico. Most of the areas containing this type of deposit were visited, and many deposits were examined. Some deposits were not visited because of lack of information as to their location. In the large area covered a great variety of climatic, geographic, and topographic conditions exists. Some of the deposits are in arid areas, whereas others are in heavily forested regions. Altitudes range from 3,400 to 9,200 feet, and the terrain varies from flat plains to rugged mountains. Transportation is a difficult problem in most of the districts, involving long truck hauls to a railroad and long rail hauls to a smelter.

"Indonesia is the second largest coal exporter to Japan, accounting for about 30 Mt annually. They produced over 400 Mt in 2015, over 99% of which is from open-cut mines. However, the conditions of surface mining are becoming worse year by year: the stripping ratio is increasing, the economy is worsening, and the infrastructure for coal transportation from inland mining areas is not being maintained. To meet the demand for coal in Indonesia and the rest of the world, underground mines have to be developed. In consideration of growing need, our research program is conducting a study on the potential for an underground coal mine in Indonesia. This research is being done through the roadway heading research program, which is looking into developing an underground coal mine from an open pit highwall. The greatest challenge for underground coal mine development in Indonesia is the maintaining the safety of the mine roadway during heading because the roof rock is exceptionally weaker. There is a potential for heading below mobile, unconsolidated soft sediment, and instead mining a deep area. This increases the likelihood for problems in the stability of the support system due to increasing ground pressure. The ground behavior around the roadway was measured using telltales, extensometers, and convergence measurements. Moreover, rock property tests were also conducted on exploration drilling cores. Based on the geological dates and monitoring data, a series of numerical analyses were conducted in order to assess support needs in the main roadway under different depths. Results of numerical analyses indicate that the current arch support design is effective when the mining depth is lower than 100m. However, if the mining depth is larger than 100m, the current arch support design should be changed to include the application of higher yield strength material, shorter spacing, etc. Moreover, bolting may also be useful if ground pressure is high locally. Based on a series of measurement data of ground and support behavior, a control criterion for main roadways under weak geological conditions is proposed in this paper."

The only nickel smelter and the only active nickel mine in the United States is Glenbrook Nickel Co., a joint venture (50% each) of Cominco Resources International Ltd. and Cominco Ltd. In 1989, with the nickel price riding high between $2.30 and $2.70/kg ($5 and $6/lb), Glenbrook seized the opportunity to purchase and recommission a southwestern Oregon ferronickel smelter and the adjacent nickel-ore mine. This Douglas County site is only about 97 km (60 miles) due east of the Pacific Ocean, and California&apos;s border lies a similar distance to the south. Hanna Mining Co. had closed the operation in 1987. And the following year, the equipment had been largely stripped for salvage value. From November 1990 through August 1992, the mine supplied an average 5 kt/d (5500 wet stpd) of ore. Currently, with import ore supplying 40% of the smelter feed, the mine&apos;s daily tonnage averages 4.2 kt (4600 wet st). From November 1990 through August 1993, the mine has delivered 2.1 Mt (2.3 million st) of ore grading 1.22% nickel with an average moisture content of 26%. Buffaloed nickel? A nickel is not worth what it was in 1989 and neither is ferronickel, with recent prices hovering around $1.13/kg ($2.50/lb). To survive, Glenbrook has focused on increasing smelter production to lower its operating costs. And this strategy has triggered several bold moves: • a new, $30 million, port facility and • a 10-year importation contract for ore from New Caledonia, an island approximately 1000 km (625 miles) east of Australia. For a Glenbrook update, a May 25, 1993 visit was made to the company&apos;s Oregon operations - the mine and smelter near Riddle plus its new Coos Bay port facility. Unfortunately, as the rain came down that day, so did news of another temporary shutdown. The previous suspension had lasted from Dec. 20, 1992 until Feb. 22, 1993. Barely three months back to work on a wet May afternoon, more than 250 of Glenbrook&apos;s approximately 300 employees contemplated yet another shutdown, effective July 31, 1993.

Gas sensing systems are becoming more important in many industries such as oil, gas and mining operations. Particularly in underground coalmines, accurate and reliable monitoring of toxic and combustible gases such as methane, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide is essential. Available conventional electrochemical sensors for gas measurements in underground coalmines suffer from shortcomings such as cross-sensitivity response, limited lifetime, high calibration cost, maintenance cost and safety. Recent studies have found that fibre optic-based gas sensors have potential to eliminate these issues. These sensors can also be used for long distance and distributed sensing of various gases, both of which are important for underground gas monitoring. This study estimates costs of producing bituminous coal and lignite by strip-mining methods in 12 hypothetical mines. Basic costs are developed by geographic area, rank of coal, and output capacity. Seam thickness and depth and type of overburden are considered typical for the area in which the hypothetical mine would be located. The cost analyses are based on the use of new equipment, the prevailing union wage scales, and the payment of all miscellaneous costs including royalties, contributions to the miners&apos; welfare fund, and license and permit fees. All model mines are considered to have a life span of 20 years. Capital costs of bituminous strip mines with a capacity of 1 million tons per year range from $12.7 million in the Appalachian region to $16.0 million in the Interior province. The corresponding selling price, assuming a discounted cash flow return of 12 percent on investment, is $5.40 and $6.95 per ton, respectively. For bituminous coal strip mines producing 3 million tons annually, a capital investment of $24.9 million will render a selling price of, $3.46 per ton in the Interior province, whereas a similar mine in the Appalachian region requires a capital investment of $28.0 million to produce coal selling for $4.01 per ton. Subbituminous strip mines of 5 million tons of output per year range in capital costs from $28.7 million in the Southwest to $13.9 million in Wyoming and Montana. Coal produced in the Southwest would sell for $3.03 per ton, while coal from Wyoming and Montana would sell for $1.83 and $1.64 per ton, respectively. The capital costs for the strip mining of lignite range from $6.4 million for an output capacity of 1 million tons annually to $20.7 million for an annual capacity of 5 million tons. The corresponding selling prices of $3.01 and $2.12 per ton, respectively, Indicate the advantages of a large-capacity strip mine.
