Natural aggregates, primarily stone, sand and gravel, are recovered from widespread, naturally occurring mineral deposits and processed for use primarily in the construction industry. They are mined, crushed, sorted by size, and sold either loose or in concrete products to build roads, houses, buildings, and other structures. Smaller quantities are used in agriculture, cement manufacture, and industries employing chemical and metallurgical processes. The growth of cities, their buildings and the highways that connect them have created demand for enormous quantities of aggregates. The aggregates industry is the largest mining industry in the United States in terms of production by weight, volume and by number of active operations.

Thermodynamic values for scandium and its compounds are very sparse. This is evident upon examination of any of the commonly used compilations of thermodynamic data. For example, National Bureau of Standards Circular 5004 lists only four heat of formation values, two free energy of formation values, and four heat-capacity values for scandium compounds. The entropy of crystalline scandium is one of the most fundamental values that has been lacking. This Bureau of Mines paper reports heat-capacity data for scandium metal in the temperature range from 50° to 298° K., together with the entropy value at 298.15° K. derived from these data through application of the third law of thermodynamics.

In this study, graphical and mathematical methods used to determine operating points in single or multiple fan ventilation systems are summarized. The problem is mathematically formulized for parallel connected fans in which analytical solutions are not possible. For n number of parallel connected fans, a non-linear equation system that consists of n number of non-linear equation sis derived. The Newton-Raphson method, which is a numerical analysis method, is adapted to solve this non-linear equation system and the solution steps are given as an algorithm. A computer program based on this algorithm is written and its applicability is proved.

The health & safety of all workers in an underground environment is paramount to the success of our operations. The diesel emission reduction projects are key to improving such an environment. However, care must be taken to reduce the risk to personnel during such tests and prevent exposure to other hazards. VALE Inco works in a close partnership with its unionized employees, manufactures, suppliers, researchers and government officials to ensure projects are done safely and efficiently to successful completion. The Creighton Mine Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) project is an example of such a project that is currently under way to evaluate new and innovative technology that will further our search for improved environment for our workplace. This paper will discuss the issues and processes that are followed to ensure Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) field tests are conducted safely and productively.

In this talk I will report on an effort to reassess the risk of pile driving to juvenile salmonids migrating through Puget Sound. The study was motivated by the concern of the construction industry that provisions restricting pile driving during the spring migration is resulting in an unbalanced burden to the industry. In simple terms the industry wants to know if some construction can be conducted in the spring without harming the juvenile fish. Fisheries agencies have agreed to reconsider their regulations in the context of additional studies. So, in this talk I will present some thoughts on risk assessment in general and the results of our study to assess the impact of pile driving on Snohomish River juvenile pink and chum salmon that migrate through the Navy Homeport construction site at Everett. The research, which is being carried out by the Fisheries Research Institute at the University of Washington, was planned and is supported in a joint effort including: the Washington Department Fisheries, National Marine Fisheries Services, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; General, Manson, and Hurlen construction companies, the Department of Transportation and a number of Puget Sound ports authorities. I will first briefly discuss the early life history of the juvenile salmon the regulations are designed to protect Second, I will outline the legal criteria required for risk regulation and some specific thoughts on how a reassessment of pile driving risk might be approached. With this basis I will report on our research and how it can be applied to a new risk assessment.

Underground blasting in permanently frozen gravel was studied in a 7-by 12-ft drift by running a nonreplicated 2 X 2 X 2 factorial experiment on the effects of type of cut, delay, and explosive on the fragmentation subsystem. Comparisons were made between a V-cut round and a burn-cut round, millisecond delays and half-second delays, and 40 percent special gelatin and 60 percent high-density ammonia dynamite. The number of large blocks in the muck pile) loading time, shuttle car operating time lost because of cleanup needs, length of advance per round, and length of muck pile were recorded and statistically analyzed. None of the blast parameters had a significant effect on the length of advance or length of muck pile, although the half-second delays tended to give a shorter muck pile than millisecond delays. The burn cut required less secondary breakage, less loading and cleanup time, and gave better overall fragmentation than the V-cut. The ammonia dynamite shots required less secondary breakage and less loading time than those using special gelatin. The half-second delays gave better overall fragmentation and required less cleanup time, but the millisecond delays gave a better loading rate. None of the differences between delays and explosives were notably significant.

The United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) awarded a contract to Foster-Miller Associates, Inc. (FMA) to develop guidelines for designing, constructing, stocking and maintaining rescue chambers in underground mines. This report develops information and recommendations which could be used by a mine operator who desired to install a rescue chamber. Volume I covers the following major areas: atmospheric life support, configuration and construction, chamber location, power and lighting, equipment and supplies, communications, and psychological aspects and training. Volume II contains the following appendices: History of Barricading, Chamber Pressurization Considerations, Diffusional Infiltration of Gas, Compressed Air Storage, Location Examples, and Psychological Aspects.

"A common problem in the mining industry involves the overloading of established conveyor systems. This overloading can have a number of causes, such as new production technology or a changing market condition which increases demand. An overloaded system usually spells disaster and leads to clean-up problems, equipment failures and lost production. The Cape Breton Development Corporation's Lingan Mine had a serious overloading situation on its underground coal clearance system, and equipment was being damaged and production was being lost. It was rectified, in part, by increasing the coal clearance capacity through the use of booster conveyors. This paper discusses the problems which led to this situation, the booster concept and the installation of the first unit at the Lingan Mine.IntroductionThe Lingan Mine is a submarine coal mining operation with an annual production of 1.5 million tonnes from three advancing longwalls. Coal is conveyed 3400m up a 13% slope to the surface. Designed and installed in the early 1970s, the system's 820-tonne/hour design initially proved adequate; however, by the late 1970sthe system was handling surge loads of 1640 tonnes per hour due to the introduction of new face equipment.The coal clearance system consisted of three 485-Kw, two 210-Kw and one 105-Kw conveyors. Each conveyor was designed for 820 tonnes per hour using 1050-mm, Type 10 belt with a 35-degree troughing profile.There were many effects of the overloading on the system:• Loading beyond the physical capacity of the belt resulted in spillage along the conveyor, which increased operational and maintenance costs.• Overloading of the drive components resulted in premature equipment failures.• Spillage at the drive pulley often resulted in damage to the belt and pulley lagging and, under extreme conditions, the conveyor would require partial unloading before it would operate. This was a particular problem under wet conditions because the 485-Kw conveyor drives were fitted with single-drive drums."

A brief review of the Waipipi Iron Sands Limited company history and operations over the past ten years is made along with a summary of the benefits of this mining company to New Zealand. Land rehabilitation procedures in coastal dune lands are described in detail and brief mention is made of a study of animal health and copper uptake. The paper concludes with a summary of the increased emphasis on agronomy and restoration as the mining operation commences dredging in a better class of grazing land.

This investigation was done to develop a method to predict the lie of coal pillars. It has long since been known that coal pillars deteriorate over time, but there was no method to quantify the deterioration. It was found that the rate of pillar deterioration was essentially a function of two parameters, namely mining height and time. The higher the mining height, the more rapidly the pillars deteriorated. The rate of deterioration is not constant, but decreases exponentially with time. The pillar life should be viewed in conjunction with the safety factor. While the relationship between safety factor and pillar life is ambiguous, the trend is nonetheless for higher safety factor pillars to have longer lives. The safety factor can be used to quantify a failure probability. The pillar life prediction indicates when the pillars which are predicted to fail, can be expected to do so.

INJURY and employment figures for nonmetal mines and mills in 1959 are presented in this publication. Data for nomnetal mines are presented separately from those for nonmetal mills. The Bureau of Mines is authorized to send questionnaires to the nonmetal mining industry each year requesting their voluntary submission of injury experience and employment data. The voluntary response to these requests has contributed greatly toward the promotion of safety in the industry, and every effort has been made to make the information as complete as possible.

"In July of 2016 and June 2017, major tap-hole repairs were carried out during the annual shutdown of two 63 MVA submerged arc furnaces producing ferrochromium in South Africa. The hot excavations of the tap-holes allowed for a study of the wear profiles. Subsequent thermodynamic calculations allowed for the quantification of the potential for chemical reaction between refractory and slag or alloy contributing to wear in the tap-hole area. Results from both wear profiling and thermodynamic calculations are reported here. IntroductionFerrochrome (FeCr) is an essential alloy in the production of stainless steel (Gasik, 2013). In 2017, 11.7 Mt of FeCr was produced (Pariser et al., 2018.). The main producers were China (39%), South Africa (29%), Kazakstan (12%), and India (8%).A number of grades of FeCr are available to producers of stainless steel, including high-carbon ferrochrome (HCFeCr) (Gasik, 2013). HCFeCr typically contains 60–70% Cr and 4–6% C (Basson and Daavittila, 2013). When the chromium content is lower (50–55% Cr) and the carbon content higher (6–8% C), it is referred to as charge chrome. Charge chrome is typically produced in South Africa due to the grades of ore available.FeCr is produced in submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) and in open arc furnaces (Mc Dougall, 2013) by carbothermic reduction of oxide raw materials. In a SAF the electrode tips are submerged in a porous charge mix. In FeCr production, the electrical energy is mainly liberated by resistive heating of the wet coke bed (Barker et al., 2007; Steenkamp et al., 2017). Thermally conductive lining design philosophies are typically applied in SAFs producing FeCr (Steenkamp, Denton, and Hayman, 2017; Coetzee, Duncanson, and Sylven, 2010; Coetzee et al., 2010).In July of 2016 and June of 2017, major tap-hole repairs were carried out during the annual shutdown of two 63 MVA SAFs producing FeCr in South Africa. The hot excavations of the tap-holes allowed for a study of the wear profiles. Both SAFs were operated on the same site, by two different operating crews, using the same raw materials. The major difference between them was that the SAF excavated in 2016 was an open SAF (referred to as Furnace A) and the one excavated in 2017 was a closed SAF (referred to as Furnace B). In an open SAF, a gap exists between the top of the steel shell and the roof, with the top of the burden being open to the atmosphere and the CO-rich off-gas being combusted as it escapes. In a closed SAF, the roof is attached to the steel shell and the CO-rich off-gas is collected from an offtake on the roof for further treatment and used in downstream processes.The paper presented here reports the macro-scale observations on refractory wear for the two SAFs, and studies the potential for chemical wear of refractory by slag and alloy as a potential contributing factor to the tap-hole wear observed."

About two-thirds of the manufactured gas supplied to the public by the gas plants in the Illinois district is cnrbureted water gas. The leading generator fuel is coke, ma.de in by-product c.oke ovens or in retorts, chiefly from eastern gas coals. During the fall and winter of 1917-18, when the demand for coke by war industries and the restrictions of the Fuel Administration in connection with the transportation of coke from eastern States made it almost impossible for many gas companies to obtain their coke requireml'nts, several water-gas plants had to use bituminous coal as generator fud. Many operating difficulties were encountered, some of which were solved more or less satisfactorily in different plants. A number of plants attacked the problem rather blindly because facilities for making tests were lacking and because technical men were too busy with labor and supply problems to study thoroughly the conditions involved or to ascertain what other plants had done with this fuel. It was therefore with the hope of assisting the gas industry during this critical period, and of promoting the use of Central District coals for gas making, that the Illinois Mining Investigations, a joint agency of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Illinois, and the Illinois Geological Survey Division undertook the, tests discussed in this paper. • This report was compiled under the auspices of a technical committee appointed by Gov. Frank 0. Lowden to promote the use of Central District coals in gas manufacture as a war measure. This committee included the following representatives of the various agencies concerned: U. S. South Africa (SA), a country in which all three commercially important asbestos minerals have been mined and milled, has retained proven cases of mesothelioma linked with environmental exposure to asbestos. This study illustrates the importance of fiber type in the occurrence of environmental mesothelioma. Four studies have reviewed the source of occupational or environmental asbestos exposure in 504 histologically proven cases of mesothelioma in South Africa. One hundred and eighteen cases (23%) were thought to be related to environmental exposure to asbestos. In the vast majority of these cases, exposure was linked to crocidolite mining activities in the Northern Cape Province. Two cases were thought to have occurred in relation to amosite and Transvaal crocidolite exposure in the Limpopo Province. In the balance of cases there was some uncertainty. No cases were reported with exposure to South African chrysotile. Consequently, in the vast majority of cases of mesothelioma, environmental exposure to asbestos occurred in the Northern Cape Province, in proximity to mines, mills and dumps where crocidolite was processed. Crocidolite appears to be far more mesotheliomagenic than amosite, and chrysotile has not been implicated in the disease. Many industries such as the cement industry handle large quantities of limestone and clay slurries. However, at present very little is known about the flow properties, such as friction loss due to flow of slurries in pipelines. This lack of knowledge has made it often very difficult to calculate the total dynamic head of a proposed slurry handling system, and therefore has often made the selection of correct size slurry handling equipment difficult. Because of lack of knowledge about slurry flow a study of slurry flow theory has been made at the Portland Cement Association's Research and Development Laboratory with the idea of developing a method whereby friction losses due to slurry flow may be predicted for any size pipeline. The flow equations developed have been checked by pilot plant size equipment. DERIVATION OF FLOW EQUATIONS It has been known for some time that limestone and clay slurries handled in cement plants do not flow in the same manner as a Newtonian fluid such as water. When a Newtonian fluid flows the shear stress at any flow velocity is proportional to the rate of shear. This phenomenon can be illustrated by a line (Figure 1). The viscosity of the fluid is the slope of the curve. Thus, the flow properties of the material may be characterized by a single materials constant: viscosity. When a non-Newtonian fluid with the type of characteristics exhibited by limestone and clay slurr-ries flow, a similar curve can be constructed (Figure 2). This graph is a shear diagram of a Bingham plastic non-Newtonian fluid. It should be noted that with the Bingham(1) plastic type of flow viscosity, the slope of the curve, is still an important materials constant. In addition, however, there is another materials constant, namely the yield stress of the material. One way to visualize this constant is to consider it as the amount of energy that must be put into a Bingham plastic material to start it flowing.

It’s not just an IT initiative but is really about upgrading the strategic thinking,” explained Michael D’Argenio, vice president of digital transformation and customer experience at SKF Americas.Learning from those who went beforeD’Argenio cited the examples of two companies that saw entirely different outcomes in the face of digital disruption. The well-known case is that of Kodak, one of the storied brands in history, whose business was disrupted by the advent of digital photography. Although it invented digital photography, Kodak decided to box it up and put it on the shelf because it was scared of disrupting its business in photographic fim. Instead, it was disastrously disrupted from the outside.Less well known is the case of Encyclopedia Brittanica Inc., publisher of the longest-running English-language, general-knowledge encyclopedia in the world. Sales peaked at 120,000 sets in 1990, plunging to 8,000 sets in 2012. In 20 short years, it saw not one but two massive digital disruptions. The first was in 1993, when Microsoft published the first digital interactive encyclopedia on a CD-ROM, called Encarta, priced at just $99. The second was in 2001, when a communitycurated, free website called Wikipedia launched. Taking the opposite approach from Kodak, Encyclopedia Brittanica looked at its industry, its company and its customers through the lens of the new technologies, made a prediction about the future and, based on that prediction, took a bold move. Having identified its core value proposition as the delivery of reliable, high-value, verifiable knowledge, Encyclopedia Brittanica replanned, restructured and rebuilt its company from the ground up to deliver that same value proposition, only in a different way. It stopped producing the only product that it had known for 244 years and began producing digital products that it sold to educational institutions.“There is a lot to learn from the Encyclopedia Brittanica case,” said D’Argenio. “The company embraced its market change, it embraced its customer change, and it rethought what it needed to do to be successful. Because it owned that disruption internally, it was never disrupted from the outside. It continues to operate today and is as profitable as it has ever been.”"

Bowden, chief metallurgist of Republic Steel Corporation, Cleveland, to act as Chairman and Mr. Tom Washburn to act as Co-Chairman. I will turn the meeting over to these gentlemen at this time.

Fully resin encapsulated threaded bar and cement grouted cable bolts are common forms of reinforcement for underground mining excavations constructed at great depth. These elements are frequently installed to dissipate the dynamic loads caused by violent rock mass failure mechanisms. Failure of the ground support scheme without rupture of the reinforcement elements implies that the maximum energy dissipation capacity of the scheme was not utilised. The ground support damage mechanisms are useful to identify in this context as they reveal vulnerabilities which limit the scheme performance. This paper presents a number of field observations of reinforcement performance following a range of dynamic loading conditions. It was observed that fully resin encapsulated threaded bars exhibit variable behaviour. In particular, inconsistent resin encapsulation was frequently observed in combination with surface support failure, indicating that the retention function of these elements may allow preferential loading of the surface support system. Observations of cement grouted, twin-strand plain cable bolts reveal a common mode of damage involving differential displacement across the steel-grout interface and slip of the cable within the borehole. This is common where strands are not mutually tensioned with barrel and wedge assemblies. Surface fixtures that exceed the strength capacity of the cable strand are required in order to minimise the occurrence of this response. Improved load transfer from the rock mass and surface support to the cable can thus be achieved, particularly where small block size failure occurs.CITATION:Drover, C and Villaescusa, E, 2016.
