According to the classification of water conservation mining in shallow coal seams in China, when the ratio of the impermeable layer thickness to the mining height is less than 18, the mining belongs to the category of special water conservation, and the strip backfilling mining method is employed. This study is based on the geological conditions in northern Shaanxi. By analyzing the stability of the impermeable layer, the stability criterion of the impermeable layer was developed. The study also investigated the compositions and properties of the backfilling materials. The results show that reasonable subsidence of the impermeable layer is allowed during mining under the basic precondition (upward cracks and downward cracks are not connected).

A feeder is used to control the gravity flow of bulk solids from storage areas, like a bin or a stockpile. For this type of application, it is important to select a proper drive that can fulfill all of the demands put on it. High starting torque capacity, variable speed and the ability to handle frequent starts and stops are some of the demands that the drive must be able to meet. The following is a comparison of the most common type of drives used today for feeder applications. When a feeder is started, the breakaway torque may reach as high as200% of the running torque. The accelerating torque usually is set to protect the carrying element of the feeder, like the belt for the belt feeder and the carrying chain of the apron feeder (Fig. 1).

"Tulawaka Mine is a joint venture between Pangea Minerals Limited 70% (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corporation) and Northern Mining 30%. Tulawaka Mine is located in North West of Tanzania in the Lake Victoria Goldfields. Tulawaka Mine is scheduled to process 360,000 tonnes per year at an average 11.5 g/t head grade over a 4 year mine life.The Tulawaka Process Plant uses single stage crushing, single stage SAG milling, gravity, intensive leach of gravity concentrates, CIL, Zadra desorption and cyanide detoxification to process the ore. Gold recovery exceeds (or is expected to) 95%.The Process Plant was designed and constructed under the supervision of Ausenco Engineering of Australia. Site works commenced in January 2004, Process Plant construction commenced in July 2004 and the first ore was presented to the Process Plant 26th February 2005. The first gold was poured on 15th March 2005. All construction contractors were demobilized from site 7th April 2005. Major achievements have been 3.4 million hrs LTI free during construction and operation to date, training of the Tanzanian workforce at Bulyanhulu Mine prior to commissioning, a succession plan to replace expatriate personnel with Tanzanian staff and significant over performance of the Process Plant against design.INTRODUCTIONTulawaka Mine is situated approximately 160 km south west of Mwanza in the western Lake Victoria Goldfields District of north western Tanzania. The property is held under a joint venture between Pangea Goldfields Inc (70%), a wholly owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corporation, and Explorations Minieres Du Nord Ltée (30%). Stoppings are required to resist lateral forces on the face of the structure to control pressure differentials created by ventilating air. The design criteria in other parts of the world, including Australia, exceed this requirement by specifying over pressurization control to as much as 14 kPa (2 psi) in the active sections and 35 kPa (5 psi) in the main ventilating control areas. This is done to provide protection to the mine workers from explosive or air blast events within the mine that can create this over pressurization. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research to develop a new testing protocol for rating mine ventilation stoppings. The premise of this work is that arch-loading conditions more accurately reflects the transverse load capabilities of stoppings in underground coal mines than the freestanding flexural strength test specified in the current Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). This work clearly shows that the transverse load capabilities of dry-stacked, mine ventilation stoppings are dependent upon the material strength of the block and the height and thickness of the wall, none of which are part of the current CFR criteria based on ASTM E-72 specifications. This paper compares the transverse load capabilities of several block materials and wall dimensions commonly used in stopping constructions based upon simulated three-hinge, rigid-arch loading tests of half-wall constructions in the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator. The results indicate a wide-range of transverse load capacities, ranging from as low as 21 kPa (0.3 psi) to as much as 117 kPa (17 psi) for the conditions evaluated in this study. The current CFR criteria do not distinguish between applications of these stopping designs despite their wide variance in transverse load capabilities, which is not conducive to employing ventilation control strategies that isolate certain sections of the mine to prevent injury to mine workers.

A two-phase program evaluated commercial proximity warning devices and then served to design and develop an automatic electrostatic field strength measurement device with improved performance. The Phase I program consisted of test and evaluation of three commercial proximity warning devices, all of which operate on the principle of electrostatic field intensity measurement for determining proximity to high voltage power lines. Performance testing of these devices utilized full-scale cranes and power line systems and a scale model facility. The evaluation results were reported in the Phase I report entitled "Evaluation of Proximity Warning Devices" dated 22 February 1980. Under the Phase II program, a microproressor-based data acquisition system was designed and developed to collect and measure field strength at distributed points around the crane boom. This unit (referred to as the Distributed Sensor AC Electrometer) measures the field strength about a crane boom using 17 distributed sensors. Keyboard control is provided for the equipment operator. Measured field strength values are displayed on a line printer and recorded on magnetic tape. Laboratory testing of this unit demonstrated performance characteristics and field strength measurement accuracy within the design goals. A Phase III measurements program is proposed using the AC Electrometer to map the field strength contours about power line configurations.

Since 1991, the laws have been relaxed so that Cuba is developing a mixed economy of central control with free market. Joint venture agreements have been signed with businesses from many countries. This does not include the United States due to its embargo. But even these regulations have been relaxed some.

Phosphate fines (size ≤ 45 μm), from the Red Sea Region, Egypt, were subjected to beneficiation process to recover the phosphorite grains from such fines. The sample is characterized by low P2O5 content (18.78%) associated with gangue minerals such as silica (22.77% SiO2) and carbonate (2.01% MgO) indicating its low grade. Phosphate pre-concentrate was prepared by gravity separation, using Falcon, where 63.37% of the phosphate, with 24.94% P2O5, 1.46% MgO, and 10.54% SiO2, was firstly recovered reducing the mass flow to the subsequent beneficiation process. However, the gravity tailing was the feed for the reverse phosphate flotation using bench scale column flotation where oleic acid was used as a carbonate gangue collector and amylase enzyme as a phosphate depressant. Under the appropriate flotation conditions (0.1% amylase, 5·10−4 mol/dm3 oleic acid, and temp. 30 °C), phospho-concentrate assaying 0.61% MgO, 13.14% SiO2, and 27.85% P2O5 with a P2O5 recovery of 55.45%, was finally obtained without the use of expensive depressants, e.g., phosphoric acid or sodium silicate. A tentative flow sheet for the whole process was postulated.

Henderson Operation’s underground molybdenum mine has been in production since 1976. Since that historic date, more than one billion pounds of moly has been produced, and over 120 Mt of ore extracted from three different levels and many different panels. The safe and successful operation of Henderson has been, and will continue to be, dependent on utilising an increasingly sophisticated fleet of equipment, advanced designs, innovative mining techniques, best practices in maintenance processes, improvements in crushing and conveying systems, and most importantly, the training and mentoring of the underground staff. MIGRATOM is a third-generation PC-based computer program developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for geophysical tomography. Like its predecessors, BOMTOM and BOMCRATR, MIGRA TOM was developed to enable users to address a variety of mining-related problems by mathematically reconstructing the distribution of physical properties in a rock mass, using measurements of travel time or amplitude of wave energy propagated through the rock mass. Examples of applications include lithologic characterization, fracture detection, fluid monitoring, stress evaluation, and blast assessment. The resolution and accuracy of tomographic reconstructions generally depend very strongly on the geometry of source and receiver locations. In many practical applications, such as cross-borehole tomography, limited coverage results in nonunique reconstructions. MIGRATOM follows the precedent of BOMTOM and BOMCRATR in allowing the user to constrain the inversion, in order to reduce the nonuniqueness problem. A new approach to application of constraints implemented in MIGRATOM is based on fuzzy logic techniques. Refraction of wave energy is modeled in MIGRATOM using an approach based on Huygens' Principle. Propagation of a continuous wavefront is modeled as a constructive interference phenomenon, which obviates the shadow-zone problem that affects conventional ray-tracing calculations. MIGRATOM has been tested with both synthetic and field data sets.

"A test surface Pulse EM(PEM) survey over a plunging massive sulphide lens, located in the Snow Lake area of Manitoba, has shown that it is possible to detect the body to a depth of 300 metres. Another surface survey in the Athabasca basin of Saskatchewan, clearly outlined a large, basement graphitic zone below 450 metres of sandstone cover. Deep detection of these conductive bodies was achieved by energizing large volumes of ground with a strong transmitted EM field. Such large fields also energize all other conductors present in the exploration area. Both of the above survey results indicate that more than one conductor is present. In such cases, detailed field coverage is required for accurate interpretation, and interpretational procedures that assume simple geometrical shapes should be applied with caution. In all cases geological and geophysical information should be coordinated in detail. The first test drill hole still has a high risk of missing the deep conductive body and two or three holes should be budgeted per target.Borehole Pulse EM surveys are now routinely used to help zero in on deep conductive targets. They are also proving effective in development drilling programs by outlining the edges of conductive bodies. The results of surveys from northern Quebec illustrate how they may provide more accurate shape and tonnage estimates."

One of the major unsolved problems of safe, economical roof support in the evaporite industry has been that of obtaining and maintaining anchorages in relatively soft rock. This is due to the viscoelastic and viscoplastic behaviour of salt rock and associated deposits. This paper introduces a low-cost, yieldable support mechanism, consisting of a system of buckling disks, which provides viable solutions to dynamic support. The yieldable support system offers a number of advantages in comparison with existing dynamic support systems. It is characterized by its simplicity in design and installation, repeatability in behaviour and cost effectiveness. It also has the added advantage of providing the operator with a means of assessing support behaviour and ground performance by direct visual observation of changes in disk shape. Thus, the system can be utilized as a warning mechanism of ground stress and support load conditions. Such system not only provides a feasible and more effective rock mass stabilization strategy but improves mine safety.

Volatile gold prices in the face of rising costs for mining and refining is causing the mines to look for new ways to reduce costs and increase recoveries. This task is complicated by the fact that the gold in hereto unexploited reserves is associated with increasingly complex ores - either preg-robbing, refractory, associated with high concentrations of copper, or all of the above. Ion exchange resins can play a significant role in this quest for improvement. Although ion exchange resins have been used in Former Soviet Union (FSU) countries for the recovery of gold for many decades, it is still not widely used in the Western World. Synthetically manufactured ion exchange resins can be tailor-made to suit the chemical and mechanical characteristics of a specific application. As such, ion exchange resins can be used in a variety of solution matrices (e.g. cyanide, thiosulphate and acid), and process designs (recovery from clear liquor after solid-liquid separation or directly from the leached pulp). In this paper, a number of applications are discussed along with a review of recent developments in ion exchange technology.

IN the recent monograph on Broken Hill, N.S.W., by E. C. Andrews,* two independent petrological reports appear as Appendices 1 and n, by W. R. Browne and F. L. Stillwell respectively. In these considerable differences of opinion occur. Andrews contributes to some of the questions at issue, but no analytical review of the differences appears in the body of the report. Their development may invite question, and the following notes have been prepared partly in explanation and partly as a summary of some of the divergences. The soope of Browne's report extends over the whole district of Broken Hill, while Stillwell's deals with the rocks within 25 chains of the main lode. The more difficult and important rock-types occur in both areas, raising similar questions. In both cases observations extended beyond the limits of the prescribed areas. Broadly, Browne faces his problem as a study of a series of primary igneous rooks, acid and basio, whioh are intrusive into a series of sillimanite gneisses. The development of the sillimanite gneisses is regarded as belonging to an earlier period than the intrusion of the igneous rooks, while the gneissio structures of the latter are features which are incidental to their orystallization, and are not acquired subsequent to their consolidation. He finally produoes a picture in which his views of igneous injection and differentiation takes a prominent place. One direct result is the claim that three separate periods of metamorphism have oocurred in the Broken Hill area. Stillwell primarily examines the rooks as schists and gneisses since their present dominating features have been acquired during metamorphism. The effort is made to understand suoh differences as might arise from differing conditions of metamorphism upon rocks of similar and different oonstitution. The aim is to divest the rocks of those oharaoters which are due to metamorphism before approaching the questions of intrusive relatio'nships between igneous rocks andsediments.

"Column and other non-conventional flotation approaches continue to provide benefits where conventional flotation processes have exhibited limited success. This is particularly evident with respect to flotation of ultrafine and coarse particles. Advancements in air sparging technology have provided the ability to produce finer bubbles than previously possible. The generation of finer bubbles coupled with the froth washing capabilities of a flotation column has demonstrated improvements in ultrafine particle recovery while simultaneously producing a high-grade float product. On the other side of the spectrum, the use of these sparging technologies while applying flotation fundamentals to a fluidized-bed reactor has increased the maximum floatable particle size up to and in excess of 3 mm. Benefits of higher recoveries and reduced reagent consumption have resulted from the use of these technologies. An additional benefit includes a reduction in plant grinding requirements. As such, this paper describes the application of Cavitation-Tube sparger technology and fluidized-bed flotation (HydroFloat). A review of data from industrial and pilot-scale applications is also provided.INTRODUCTIONConventional (mechanical) froth flotation is considered the workhorse of the minerals processing industry. This low-cost process makes it possible to selectively recover minerals by exploiting the difference in surface characteristics (e.g., wettability) of the valuable component and the waste material. Unfortunately, the upper particle size limit for flotation rarely exceeds 0.600 mm, and is typically maintained at less than 0.300 mm for most industrial applications. For many commercial base metal plants, the particle size range for optimum recovery is typically between 0.01 and 0.1 mm (Lynch et al., 1981). This finding is not novel. In fact, the effect of particle size on flotation recovery was studied as early as 1931 by Gaudin et al. who showed that coarse (+0.250 mm) and extremely fine particles (-0.010 mm) are more difficult to recover than particles of an intermediate size. The loss of recovery is due to inherent limitations associated with the flotation process, including bubble-particle adhesion and collision, detachment, buoyancy, and transport."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines constructed a large-scaJe facility to study the self-heating of a large coal mass under conditions that simulate a gob area of a mine. The insulated coal chamber can hold up to 13 short tons (st) of coal and is provided with a forced ventilation system and computer-controlled temperature and gas measurement systems to monitor the heat and mass transfer phenomena that occur in the coalbed. Three experiments were completed with high-volatile C bituminous coals that exhibited high spontaneous combustion potentials in laboratory-scale tests. In the first two tests, a sustained heating was not achieved. In the third test, temperatures throughout the coalbed increased steadily from the start, with thermal runaway occurring near the center of the coalbed after 23 days. The thermal reaction wne then moved toward the front of the coalbed. The results of these tests showed that the self-heating of a large coal mass depends not just on the reactivity of the coal, but also on the particle size of the coal, the freshness of the coal surfaces, the heat-of-wetting effect, and the availability of O2 at optimum ventilation rates.

Keywords: Wire Drawing, OFHC Copper, Recrystallization, Orientation imaging Microscopy (OIM), Texture inhomogeneity Textural inhomogeneities have been investigated in oxygen free high conducting (OFHC) copper wire drawn at room temperature to a true strain of 2.31, and isothermally annealed at 250°C and 750°C for annealing times ranging from 10 s to 1 hr. Local orientations were mapped by means of orientation imaging microscopy (OIM). The microtexture of the drawn wires showed a strong <111> + weak <100> duplex fiber texture at the inner core, whereas the mid and surface regions had a comparatively weak texture. Annealing at 250°C resulted into a recrystallization which originated from the mid section, proceed towards the surface regions and ends in the inner core. Recrystallization resulted into a strong<100>+weak<111> duplex fiber texture. A similar textural inhomogeneity was observed during short annealing at 750°C. However, prolonged annealing gave rise to abnormal grain-growth that proceed from the inner core to the outer surfaces with a dominant <111> fiber component at the inner region and mixed components of <111>, <100>, and <112> at the outer surfaces.

Two case histories are presented on the evaluation of static bearing capacity of piles driven in soils that exhibit time dependent strength changes. Under consideration are a steel and a concrete pile driven into soils generally consisting of silty and clayey fine sand. Pile dynamic measurements and analyses were performed on both piles during initial installation, and also during restrike one week later. This information was used to predict each pile&apos;s long term capacity (defined as 14 days after initial drive), which was then compared to that measured with a static load test. Agreement between predicted and measured capacities were remarkably good, with an average error of only 4.5 percent. Two weeks after driving, total pile capacities were three times those at the end of drive. If only the skin friction was considered, however, it increased by an average factor of 16. The increase in pile capacity was determined to be linear over the time period considered.

AISI 4130 steel is a medium carbon Cr-Mo steel used in automotive, aeronautic and other general-purpose industries. In this study, 4130 steel fatigue specimens were carburized at 927oC to enhance the carbon content in the steel, raising it from approximately 0.30% (non-carburized) to 0.90% (carburized, oil quenched and tempered). Rotating bending fatigue tests were performed on the R. R. Moore Rotating Beam Fatigue Testing System, in order to determine the high cycle fatigue (HCF) life of 4130 steel and plot the corresponding S-N diagrams. A comparison of the results of carburized and non-carburized specimens shows that carburizing of steel: a) increases the surface hardness and b) improves the fatigue strength of the steel by at least two orders of magnitude.

This interpretation of the mining laws of British Honduras has been prepared from the best available information in Washington and is released subject to amplification or correction, if necessary, by United States foreign-service officers. INTRODUCTION The mining law governing all mineral substances other than oil is ordinance No. 7 of 1927 (Minerals Ordinance, 1927), passed by the Legislative Council on March 25, 1927. The accompanying regulations, No. 3 of 1932 (General Minerals Regulations, 1932), made under the authority of section 66 of the minerals ordinance, were made by the Governor in Council on December 23, 1931.
