"Jim Macdonald was promoted from Waterworks Engineer to Streetworks Engineer for the Wellington City Council. He thus took over the City quarry and responsibility for its performance. The crushing plant needed upgrading and he thought it would not be difficult to make a crusher to overcome a problem. If he had a longer association with the quarry industry he would have used conventional methods and equipment, so his invention arose from a fresh view of crushing.He invented the Barmac Rotopactor after observing a wear resistant chute with a lining of dead stone trapped above a piece of angle. This idea led to a rotor lined with trapped stone, rotating on a vertical spindle. In trying - a model rotor he observed the impact against a circular rill of stone in half an oil drum and thus was started a very fertile new area of developement in comminution. The writer helped in the developement and shares in the patents. Jim died in January 1982, just as the machine was becoming known and some 200 were in use in various countries. Most were working in hard rock quarries et that time but recent uses have carried the machine into the mining and mineral processing field. This paper is directed at that industry."

A series of fault slip seismic events have occurred at Garson mine. The events have occurred during development advancement exposing faults, after the extraction of single stopes due to mining induced stress change, and due to time effects after delays of many days during which no mining had been conducted. This paper discusses the study completed consisting of a global or holistic approach aimed at mitigating some of the risks associated with the structurally controlled rockbursts at Garson. Background Garson mine is located in the south east area of the Sudbury Basin (Ontario, Canada). Mining occurs in two main ore bodies (the #1 Shear and the #4 Shear) which are copper-nickel-sulphide and occur within shear zones that (as well as the ore bodies) strike approximately east-west and dip steeply south. From the north (footwall), lithologies progress (Figure 1a) from norite (NR), to greenstone (GS), and finally to meta-sediment (MTSD). A generally WNW-ESE striking, bifurcated sub-vertical dyke of olivine diabase (OLDI) cuts the series. The current active mining block at Garson is between 4700L and 5100L (levels denote depth in feet below surface).

El presente trabajo describe el método de mecanización del sublevel caving realizado en la mina Yauricocha, donde se aplica a cuerpos que varían de de pequeños a medianos, irregulares o angostos a través del uso de Scoops. Así también el método puede ser usado en roca competente, así como en cuerpos que ya han sido parcialmente explotados como es el caso del cuerpo Cuye. Finalmente no es requisito fundamental que el mineral sea de resistencia muy mala, ya que al descubrir una superficie relativamente grande a través de varios bolsillos, el mineral cae con facilidad debido a la presión del techo aún sin usar explosivos.

The object of this study was to determine the economic feasibility of hydraulically transporting Sandow (Tex.) lignite 100 miles and dewatering and thermally drying the transported lignite to a surface-dry condition. The most important factors involved in the feasibility of hydraulic transport, are the degradation incurred during transit, the length of the line, and the cost of alternative methods of shipment. In pipeline tests in which roughly 75 miles of hydraulic transport was simulated the percentage of minus-325-mesh solids increased from about 1 to 41 percent for both lignite and bituminous coal; in the micron sizes the coal fared considerably better than the lignite. Such degradation, even though it enhances flow through the pipe-line, severely aggravates the dewatering problem on lignite. Cost studies indicated that continuous vacuum filters offer the most economical means of dewatering minus-1/8-inch material. Surface moisture, if high, must be removed by relatively expensive thermal drying.

This is a sampling of the papers presented at the conference, the proceedings can be bought from the SAIMM Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) computational techniques allow treatment of gases, liquids and solids in the same simulation. ALE methods include the ability to treat shock waves in gases, liquids and solids and the interaction of shock waves with each other and with media from one of the other categories. ALE codes can also treat explosive detonation and the expansion of the explosive gases and their interaction with air and solids. ALEGRA is a 3-D ALE code that has been developed at Sandia National Laboratories over the past few years. ALEGRA has been applied to a 2-D simulation of presplitting using decoupled explosives in rock blasting with very interesting results. The detonation of the explosive at the bottom of the hole sends a shock wave up the borehole driven by the explosive gas expanding into air. The explosive gas compresses the air against the stemming column where it rebounds and recompresses at the bottom of the borehole. This type of ringing takes several cycles to damp out. The explosively induced expansion of the borehole is also treated by ALEGRA as well as the shock wave imparted to the rock. The presentation of this paper will include several computer animations to aid in understanding this complex phenomenon.

The thickness of the coal seam is one of the more important items influencing the productivity and general overall efficiency of operation of a coal mine. The average thickness of coal seams mined in the United States has changed very little in the past 40 years. The first measurement of thickness of bituminous coal and lignite seams was made for 1920, when the average thickness was 5.3 feet.4/ The average thickness for later years was as follows: 1945, 5.4 feet; 1950, 5.3 feet; 1955, 5.2 feet; and 1960, 5.5 feet.5/ Table 1 includes data on number and production of bituminous coal and lignite mines classified by I-foot intervals of seam thickness mined in 1920, 1945, 1950, 1955, and 1960. Though bituminous coal and lignite are mined today from seams of exceedingly variable thickness -less than 2 feet to more than 50 feet - a large majority of the production, 62 percent in 1960, came from seams 3 to 6 feet thick. This is not surprising since the coal seam of moderate thickness presents the least mining difficulties.

Oceana Gold (NZ) LtdÆs, Macraes Gold Operation currently has two tailings impoundments, the larger of which covers approximately 75 ha. When an impoundment is temporarily out of use, the surface dries and dust can be blown from the surface to the surrounding area. At present water spraying is used to stabilise the surface, but this is not ideal as Macraes mine can experience water shortages during the summer. This paper examines an alternative method of surface stabilisation using vegetation as a ground cover. The tailings have a low natural fertility, so it is important to determine what will actually grow in the tailings, and whether amendments are necessary. Also important is the effect of the amendments on arsenic mobility in the tailings as the schist rock at Macraes has naturally elevated levels of arsenic. Three plants species, rye corn, barley, and lupin, were grown in metre-deep lysimeters at Macraes mine site. The plants were grown in unaltered tailings, and tailings with one of two amendments added: Bioboost (an organic fertiliser containing biosolids), and superphosphate fertiliser. The leachate from each lysimeter was collected and analysed monthly to determine the extent of arsenic mobility. In addition, laboratory experiments were set up to determine arsenic mobility in tailings with amendments at the centimetre scale.   All plants grew best with the fertiliser amendment, with rye corn growing the best overall. Plants growing in unaltered tailings either barely survived (rye corn, barley) or died (lupin). Plants in the Bioboost amended tailings grew only slightly better than in the unamended tailings. Laboratory experiments indicate that the addition of phosphate fertiliser greatly increases arsenic leaching at the centimetre scale when compared to unamended tailings. The addition of Bioboost only marginally increases arsenic leaching, compared to unamended tailings. This trend has not been repeated in the lysimeter trials on the metre scale over four months. Current results suggest that of the plant types trialed and amendments used, rye corn with superphosphate is the most practical short-term tailings stabilisation method at Macraes.

Most, if not all, of the six recognised post-Cretaceous, predominantly andesitic mineralised belts in the region are now thought to be subduction-related magmatic arcs. The Inner Carpathian arc and the Eastern Bosnia or Drina-Rhodope arc host numerous vein and replacement deposits with epithermal features and Zn-Pb+/-Ag as the predominant economic minerals. In contrast, the south Apuseni Mountains have produced over 1 600 t Au from epithermal veins but very little Zn-Pb. Recent age determinations and geophysical data from the Baia Mare district of the Inner Carpathians suggest that mineralisation succeeded volcanism by 1-2 m.y. and accompanied crustal extension and the cooling of a large, mushroom-shaped pluton whose boundaries define the mineral district. In the south Apuseni district, mineralisation can be explained by mixing of meteoric with low-salinity metamorphic water expelled during intrusion of mafic rocks into the middle or lower crust. The more continental or cratonic crust in the Drina-Rhodope and Inner Carpathian arcs precluded the input of low-salinity, Au-bearing metamorphic water; the Zn-Pb deposits formed where convecting meteoric water mixed with saline water, possibly introduced through carbonate rocks in the basement

This report describes operations at the Rosiclare Fluorspar Works of the Aluminum Co. of America at Rosiclare, Hardin County, Ill. The works include the Fairview mine, the fluorspar mill, and related facilities. The publication covers exploration, development, mining and milling practices, mine-drainage problems, and other activities and is presented as part of the Bureau of Mines series of publications on mining and milling practices in various parts of the United States. The Rosiclare fluorspar area, for its size, has been the largest producer of high-grade fluorspar in the United States and probably in the world. The vein system in this area is over 5 miles long and 1/2 mile wide, and ore has been found as deep as 900 ft.

The expert system component of Knowledge Base System supports the analysis and interpretation phases of ventilation design with an algorithmic program used for the solution of alternate design. The paper describes the ?ES-VENT? knowledge based system developed at Central Mining Research Institute, Dhanbad, India for an on-line diagnosing of the ventilation problems using the ?IITMRULE? expert system development tool. In the ?IITMRULE? expert system tool, it has been decided to use a backward chaining reasoning process to reach the goal state i.e. the final conclusion. ES-VENT system is made of three modules: On-line Data, Diagnostics and KBS. Each module is being a collection of several programs. The paper mainly deals with the parameters affecting the ventilation of underground mines such as air-velocity, air pressure, temperature, dust, and humidity and gas contents. The graphical presentation of these parameters on the computer and the interactive part of the developed program is expected to help a ventilation officer to determine the changes in a ventilation circuit necessary to bring the mine ventilation to the desired value. Once such changes are physically effected, the display will indicate if the changes have brought the desired effect or not on ventilation. "Ore grades are decreasing and ore deposits are becoming more complex. In order to make a sound economical decision about a mining project, metallurgical testwork must be carried out. A few large “representative” samples cannot represent the metallurgy of a large ore body and a large number of samples reflecting variation in ore head grades and in mineralization types must be obtained for proper metallurgical studies, including flowsheet development for a greenfield project. A relationship can be established between the recovery of valuable minerals and ore grade for each mineralization type. This relationship can be used to establish a correlation between values recoverable and values contained in the ore body that can include multiple pay metals. With this information, a sound economical decision can be made about the viability of a large mining development project.INTRODUCTIONThe demand for minerals today is historically high as many countries are being rapidly industrialized. The supply for these minerals is not necessarily running short. However, it is widely accepted that the world today is running short of the easy to mine and easy to process ore deposits. As ore grade is decreasing and ore mineralogy is becoming more complex, metallurgical testing must be fully conducted in order to make a sound economical decision about a mining project. For a high-grade and high-quality deposit, it is hard not to make a good profit even with low metal prices. For a low-grade and hard to process deposit, the profit margin is much lower and is dependent on the throughput and the recovery of valuable minerals. The recovery of valuable minerals is a function of ore grade and mineralogy and it must be experimentally determined for a given processing option.At Vale Base Metals Technology Development, metallurgical testing for an existing operation or brownfield project is termed as Ore Evaluation, while metallurgical testing for a greenfield project is termed as Flowsheet Development (Xu, 2011). In the past, metallurgical testing involved a few large composite samples for lab and pilot plant testwork. As ore deposit becomes less homogeneous and more variable, a few large composite samples cannot represent the metallurgy of a large ore body. In addition, useful information about the deposit such as zones of “impurities” or floatable rock minerals would not be obtained. Different processing strategies could have been developed if the locations and sizes of these zones were known in advance. For proper metallurgical studies, a large number of samples reflecting variation in ore head grades and in ore mineralization types must be used. A relationship can be established between the recovery of valuable minerals and ore grade for each mineralization type. This relationship can be used to estimate values recoverable in the ore body that can include multiple pay metals. Ultimately, the recovery verses ore grade relationship will be used in business decision-making."

Rock dust, as a preventive or limiting factor in explosions of gas and coal dust in bituminous-coal mines, was used in larger quantities in 1939 than in any other year except 1937 since annual figures first became available in 1930, Reports from mining companies to the Bureau of Mines revealed that 144,430,000 pounds of rock dust was applied to underground nine workings in mines that produced 126,635,677 short tons of coal during the year. This quantity of rock dust applied averaged 1.14 pounds for each ton of coal produced. Rock dusted mines were the source of 39.7 percent of the total production of bituminous coal from underground mines; 33.2 percent of the total number of underground workers were employed at rock-dusted mines, and 35.8 percent of the total number of man-hours worked underground at all bituminous-coal mines in the United States during 19719 can be accredited to mines so treated. Rock dust was employed chiefly in the larger mines, which numbered only 431 out of 6,016 underground mines in operation in 1935, according to reports from mining companies. The mines in which rock dust was used had an average of 288 underground employees per mine, whereas mines in which rock dust was not used averaged only 62 underground employees per mine.

During the summer of 2015, Unisea Inc. sought proposals for the G1 Dock Replacement Project in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. It would be a one year project and construction was scheduled to begin in the spring of 2016. One aspect of the project was the requirement for a layer of armor stone to protect part of the dock. An estimated 30,500 tonnes (37,670 t) of armor stone were needed for the project. The source of rock was the Unisea Quarry due to its proximity to the project and the quality of the stone meeting all the required technical standards.

India is the third largest producer of coal and the fourth largest in terms of coal reserves in the world. However, new research quite ironically projects that despite the continuing growth in domestic coal production, the country’s exploding economic growth will position it to be the biggest coal importer by 2020. India’s inability to meet the domestic coal demand is mainly attributed to low rate of production, increasing stripping ratio, non use of appropriate technology etc. of coal mining operations here. Presently Indian surface mines which have to shoulder the onerous responsibility of augmenting the coal extraction rate at an even brisker pace are mulling bigger, better and more efficient operations ensuring commensurate rise in stripping work as well. This mammoth task can be accomplished only by deploying smart technologies. In this perspective, cast blasting of overburden emerges on the horizon as a promising alternative for enhancement of the production and productivity of Indian open-pit coal mines.

"In partnership with California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and with support from International Association of Foundation Drilling (ADSC), Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) organized a workshop on quality assurance (QA) practices for acceptance of post-grouted drilled shafts in conjunction with DFI’s 40th Annual Conference on Deep Foundations. The 1½-day workshop was held on October 15-16, 2015 at the Oakland Marriott City Center in Oakland, CA.Post-grouting, in the context of this workshop and report, refers to the alternative design and construction of base-grouted drilled shafts wherein a grout distribution system is installed during construction and used to grout the base under pressure after the drilled shaft concrete has gained adequate strength, resulting in a stiffer axial-compression load-displacement relationship and additional possible ground improvement effects.The primary goals of the workshop were to•?Identify and summarize the state of the practice for design, construction, inspection, verification, acceptance criteria, reliability and performance of post-grouting.•?Identify gaps and needs in quality assurance that should be addressed for successful use of post-grouting.This report is structured to follow the workshop program: workshop presentations outlined the state of practice and views from owners, engineers and contractors on acceptance of post grouting methods for drilled shafts; and subsequent workshop discussions attended by a small invited group of participants focused on identifying areas of agreement and disagreement on post-grouting best practices, acceptance criteria, design and verification procedures, and inspection requirements. A partial list of attendees of the open and closed sessions is provided as Appendix A, and copies of presentations are included as Appendix B.FHWA and Caltrans are the primary audiences for this report, and its content will be used to develop a roadmap for deploying the findings into policy and practice. The secondary audience is the broader industry group, and the report content will be disseminated in a variety of formats."
