Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority is currently undertaking the first Phase of Metro?s Extension to Northern Virginia. A wide range of tunnel options was considered for the Tysons Corner segment that involves about 20,000 feet of track and four stations. After consideration of many options that involved EPBM single track tunnels, NATM tunnels and large bore tunnel concepts for the entire Tysons alignment, the design now being progressed into construction involves two 520 meter (1,700 feet) long soft ground NATM tunnels with several hundred feet of cut-and-cover construction. The paper discusses the process that led to selection of the short NATM tunnels as the most feasible of the options considered for Tysons.

This publication combines a critical review of the literature on the microbiology of coal with an introduction to those areas of microbiology related to studies of coal as a biological material. The attack on coal by microorganisms as yet remains doubtful. Only the low-rank coals contain an indigenous microbial flora, and even these organisms are not peculiar to coal, but are common soil and water forms. No experimental data have as yet been presented, either in the literature or in the present work, which unequivocally demonstrate the oxidation of coal by microorganisms. Reasons for the resistance of coal to such attack, including insolubility, physicochemical structure, steric hindrance of enzyme action, and the presence of antibiotic materials in coal are discussed. Microorganisms do attack large aromatic molecules and the mode of oxidation of aromatic ring systems by bacteria is presented. Well-defined pathways are known for the oxidation of polycyclic compounds with one to three rings, and these paths with their key intermediates are described and related to the possible oxidation of coal.

The 6-m- (20-ft-) diameter cast-in-place tunnel lining for Phase 3 of the Mill Creek Tunnel (MCT3) has been completed. This article summarizes aspects of liner design and ad-dresses the construction approach in placing the liner in areas of tunnel that experienced crown overbreak. Tunnel lining production rates, installation procedures and form buoyancies experienced during concrete placement will also be presented. The Mill Creek Phase 3 tunnel (MCT-3) is expected to be completed this year. It is one of the largest tunneling projects undertaken by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) to date. The tunnel horizon is situated within the Devonian Chagrin Shale rock formation at an average depth of 85 m (280 ft). The tunnel was excavated using a two-pass method. A full face, fully shielded, Robbins 7.2-m- (23.8-ft-) diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM) was used to excavate approximately 4,500 m (15,000 ft) of tunnel and facilitate installation of initial supports (first pass). The final lining (second pass) consists of 305-mm- (12-in.-) thick cast-in-place reinforced concrete and integral low flow channel. Seven shafts were constructed on the project. The excavation of the tunnel commenced at Shaft 14 and proceeded down grade to Shaft 9, the terminus shaft. Because of the presence of overbreak in the tunnel crown, measures were required to support the form and counteract the effects of buoyancy during concrete placement.

Factors of geological structure and occurrence of coalbeds, plus the resulting mining conditions, have required more care in preparing coals in Alabama than in most other districts almost since mining Alabama coals began. For this reason, literature on these coals may be interesting to those in areas where prime coals have been mined out, and thinner and less regular beds must now be exploited. This literature review has been arranged in order of subject matter. Some references have been listed more than once, but each separate review is limited to the material pertaining to the subject matter being discussed. For those seeking specific information, the authors have indicated which items repeat material and which items are most complete or specific. Geology, preparation, and carbonization of coal have been reviewed the most frequently.

This paper is an attempt to outline the emergence of Augered Cast-ln-Place piles as one of the more economical types of foundation for supporting high-rise buildings and heavily loaded structures recently constructed in the flood plains in and around the Greater Pittsburgh area. To understand the process of selecting foundation types, it is important to understand the general geology of the area and past construction activities that have taken place in the flood plains, especially along the riverbanks, during the last century. The first part of this paper presents a brief description of the general geology of the area; the second part of the paper concentrates on the historical evolution of the use of deep foundations and selected case histories; and the last part presents the results of load tests on large diameter Augered Tremie Concrete (ATC) Piles placed in sandy alluvium which suggests a much larger load-carrying capacity of these piles and also provides an insight into their future application. 2.0 GENERAL GEOLOGY 2.1 Soil Overburden Most of the high rise buildings in the Central Business District as well as along the North Shore and South Side of Pittsburgh are situated in the flood plain at the confluence of the Allegheny River and the Monongahela River where their combined flow forms the Ohio River. The flood plain consists of unconsolidated deposits of Quaternary age that overlie the bedrock of Pennsylvanian age. These deposits are called alluvium or valley fill, and include moderately to poorly sorted clay, silt, sand, gravel and some boulders. Their thickness varies from zero at the edges of the valley to about 80 feet towards the rivers (Figure 1).

The maximum current density at which conventional copper electrowinning plants will result in satisfactory, adherent, and dendrite·free cathodes is determined by the thickness of the diffusion boundary layer. A decrease in the value of that thickness will permit an increase in the current density. This fact is utilized to develop a high current density cell in which the reduction of the boundary layer thickness is accomplished by means of a specially designed electrolyte circulation system. The high current density cell is used to determine the effect of current density on such process parameters as current efficiency, cell voltage, power consumption, and cathode purity. A number of empirical equations are developed for the purpose of estimating the magnitude of these effects.

State mining regulations in Queensland stipulate that a mine be provided with an earth installed on surface and that all underground equipment that needs to be earthed should be connected via a copper conductor to this surface grounding point. The regulations further require that all exposed metal surfaces in underground substations be connected to an earth. In a study of earthing conditions at Mount Isa mine it was found that the physical anchoring of metal work at substations (with rockbolts and associated steel mesh) also provides an excellent electrical connection to the country rock. It was established that not only is the mine's earthing system grounded at numerous underground locations but also that such anchor points offer, in general, a path to ground with lower resistance than does the legally required grounding point on the surface. It is recommended that metalliferous mines should utilise a multiple-earth system and not a run earth connected to a single, above-ground earth point

The first major project in Boston's new access to Logan Airport was an Immersed Tube Tunnel which extended 3,600 ft. from South Boston to East Boston across Boston Harbor. Twelve tube sections, 300 ft. long x 80 ft. wide x 40 ft. high, were lowered into an excavated trench which was then backfilled. The depth of the trench at mid-channel was approximately 100 ft. below mean high tide. At the East Boston end the tube terminated close to the present shoreline. At the South Boston end the tube terminated approximately 600 ft. inland from the shore line where a ventilation building was required. The depth to subgrade from existing ground at the ventilation structure was approximately 85 ft. The soil profile at this location consisted of 50 ft. of miscellaneous rubble fill, 25 ft. of Boston blue clay, and 10 ft. of glacial till. A small amount of weathered argellite existed at the north end of the structure. Part of the Morrison Knudsen, Interbeton, J.F. White, Joint Venture contract to construct the Immersed Tube Tunnel (ITT) was the construction of a cofferdam at the tube/ventilation building interface. The ventilation building was to be built as part of another contract. The construction of the cofferdam and the excavation to the building subgrade was the responsibility of J.F. White Contracting Company.

Cable shovels are used for primary excavation in in-situ and/or pre-fragmented formations in surface mining operations. Poorly fragmented hard rock formations and random occurrence of hard boulders in soft formations cause extreme variability of material diggability, resulting in varying shovel stress loading. The stress loading of a shovel’s front-end assembly could result in fatigue failure. Conventional design process, which uses physical shovel simulation studies, is very costly and time consuming for achieving statistically significant results. In this paper, rigid and flexible multi-body dynamic theories are used to develop component stress loading and deformation models of the cable shovel, and solved in the ADAMS/NASTRAN/FLEX environments. Detailed simulation experiments are carried out to examine the performance, reliability, durability and efficiency of the P&H 4100A under varying in-situ formation conditions. The results show areas of high stress fields with a maximum stress of 313.31 MPa at node 441 within the hoist rope. The reliability of the results is confirmed by comparing existing test data. The study is significant because it provides a solid foundation for further study of failure life analysis of the cable shovel components.

The following Inventory was prepared to provide mineral deposit data to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for use in the Resource Development Navigation Study in Alaska. The inventory was prepared using data contained in the U.S. Bureau of Mines Minerals Availability System (MAS) database. The Alaska portion of the database contains Information on over 7,000 mineral locations and deposits throughout the state. When MAS was established In 1975, database entries were originally compiled from literature searches by both Bureau personnel and contractors. Deposit data are obtained/maintained through Information gained from a variety of sources, Including published and unpublished Bureau of Mines reports, records, and files; U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Bulletins, Professional Papers, and other reports; technical and professional Journals; State and other Federal agency publications; data generated during field examinations; and information obtained from knowledgeable individuals. Because of the size of the data base, many of the data have not been significantly modified since initial entry. Each deposit on the MAS data base has a sequence number of the following form:

Large scale tests were conducted on quartzitic gravel and crushed sand-stone to investigate pertinent geotechnical properties for backfill support of egress shafts. Such shafts are envisaged for rapid launching of deep-based missiles. The backfill support is designed to resist shaft closure under dynamic loading, and must also drain rapidly to a lower catch chamber to allow launching. Large scale tilt shear tests were performed to measure the internal shear strength of the two backfill materials. Shaft filling and emptying tests were conducted in a 12 ft deep, 3 ft diameter model section of shaft drilled in sandstone. One half of the model was smooth bored, the other half rough-surfaced to represent drill and blast surfaces. Vertical and horizontal pressure cells indicated that stress only built-up during the first 1 to 1 ½ diameters of filling, due to the high-sidewall friction of 38° for the rough shaft and 31° for the smooth shaft. Interface sliding tests were performed to confirm these figures. Static and dynamic deformation tests were also per-formed, and indicated moduli as high as 56,000 psi, which will give excellent shaft support. Both the shaft support characteristics and the ease of emptying of gravel look particularly promising.

The discovery of the Nyidinghu Iron Ore Deposit totalling 2.46 Bt of resource continues FortescueÆs highly successful exploration record of discovering multi-billion tonne deposits under cover with little to no surface expression. Since inception in 2003 Fortescue have discovered and delineated the Christmas Creek and Cloudbreak deposits in the Chichester Range totalling 3.38 Bt and 3.25 Bt in the Solomon region. Together with other deposits Fortescues resource portfolio now approximates 10 Bt of hematite - goethite mineralisation.The Nyidinghu deposit is situated on the southern margin of the Fortescue Valley, 35 km south of FortescueÆs Cloudbreak mining operations on the north margin of the valley. Nyidinghu comprises approximately 70 per cent BID martite - goethite mineralisation hosted by the Brockman Iron Formation and 30 per cent CID beneath alluvial outwash of the Weeli Wolli Creek in to the Fortescue Valley. Minor DID mineralisation occurs at the deposit margins.BID mineralisation is strongly controlled by the pre-existing NE/SW trending Weeli Wolli Fault system and bounded to the north by the Poonda Fault. Both fault systems are interpreted to have had a long and complex history commencing pre Ophthalmian Orogeny (ca 2.2 Ga) and remaining intermittently active through the Proterozoic.CID at Nyidinghu is the downstream continuation of the combined Weeli Wolli/Marillana CID palaeochannel system being mined by Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton at Yandicoogina and Yandi, respectively.Exploration commenced in August 2010 with the inaugural resource announcement of 1 Bt being made just six months later. To date over 1700 RC and 85 diamond core holes have been drilled forming the basis for the resource of 2.46 Bt and ongoing feasibility studies. The mining industry of the United States has long been severely criti- cized because of its high rate of accident occurrence, not only as compared with other industries of the United States but also with the mining industries of other countries, particularly Europe. Statistics, often not strictly com- parable, indicate that the accident-frequency rate in all mining is currently about three times and the accident-severity rate is about seven times as great as the average for general industrial work in the United States. These fig- ures are by no means comforting to humanitarian mining men, irrespective of their status in the industry, and they constitute a challenge that certainly cannot continue to be ignored much longer. The picture becomes much darker when the above statistics are augmented with data indicating that on an exposure basis our mines (more particularly our coal mines) have accident rates two, three, or even more times as great as more or less similar mines in Europe, particularly England, Wales, Belgium, France, and Germany. The sting is alleviated to some extent by the knowledge that our coal mines produce about 4 to 5 times as much coal per man day as is produced in at least some European mines. However, all of these foreign acci- dent statistics should be analyzed carefully before we become very much con- cerned about them, because they are not strictly comparable, for several reasons, not the least of which is the fact that foreign methods of compiling or recording accident statistics often differ materially from ours. Moreover, foreign mining and other conditions are definitely dissimilar to ours in many phases, and numerous other factors affect the comparability of foreign mine- accident statistics with those of the United States. Unquestionably, it should also be taken into consideration that the accident rate of the 140,000,000 or more constituting the populace of the United States as a whole is much higher than that of any other major country in the world and is two, three, or more times the rate of the European countries that have more favor- able mine-accident rates than those of the United States (table 1). Moreover, it is significant that the mine-accident-severity rate of British mines is about six times the average accident-severity rate of the major industries of the British Isles, or but little more favorable than the comparable figures in the United States; namely, that mining has an accident severity rate about seven times the average of about 30 of the major industries of this country.

Mould powders play an important role in the stability of the continuous casting process. The main functions of mould powders are to provide sufficient lubrication and to control the horizontal heat transfer. Because process control of thin slab casting is more stringent, it is generally assumed that mould powder properties become more critical as well. In 2000, the Direct Sheet Plant at Corus IJmuiden (DSP) was commissioned, incorporating a thin slab caster designed for casting speeds up to 6 m/min. During commissioning, several operational problems with mould powders were encountered i.e. insufficient liquid pool depth and the formation of rims/lumps. To investigate the operational mould powder problems, some of the mould powders were characterized using physical and mineralogical methods. The results were linked to operational experiences. It was concluded that for thin slab casting, a stable slag formation is obtained with a proper choice of free carbon and an even distribution of the carbon particles within the granules. The physical properties of mould powders are not as critical as expected when the additional mineralogical requirements are taken into account. OPTICAL PROPERTIES of U.S. coals of differing rank have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines, for about 20 years. These investigations have been remade to further the development of an objective basis for petrographic analysis of coal and to add to knowledge of the structure and composition of coal and coal components by determining their optical constants in various regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Various experimental techniques have been used in these studies, including determination of reflectance from bulk specimens and transmittance of thin and ultrathin sections, interferometry, electron microscopy, and election diffraction. Similar studies leave also been made of graphite, the end product of coal metamorphism. The bureau of Mines conducted the first U.S. investigation of reflectance properties of coal components, laying the foundation for petrographic analysis based on arbitrary reflectance classes and for automated reflectance analysis of coals. Optical constants of coals of differing rank and of graphite have been determined in the ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectrum. Maxima in the optical constants of graphite were observed in the ultraviolet region and were interpreted to be related to transitions of electrons between the valence and conduction bands. Similar maxima for coals, especially high-rank coals, appeared to be characteristic of the presence of graphitelike layers. A special application of optical theory to absorbing, anisotropic materials like graphite and high-rank coals has been developed. Electron microscopic and electron diffraction studies of coals have revealed various ultrafine structures in coal components and have shown the evolution of an oriented, crystalline graphite structure in high-rank coals.

IntroductionThe copper price traded in the London Metal Exchange is a relevant parameter for defining macroeconomic policies of producing countries like Chile. It is also a key factor for the mining companies, since fluctuations in the sell price affect the expected financial flows. Due to the amount of money involved in decision-making, it is necessary to have accurate forecasts of the future copper prices and to quantify the uncertainty associated with such prices.This paper focuses on the annual copper price estimation in the short and medium terms, i.e., from one to five years into the future. Henceforth, the word “estimation” will be used as a synonym of “forecast,” according to the geostatistical jargon (Matheron, 1989).Two main approaches, based either on statistics or econometrics, are currently used to forecast commodity prices, but both of them are not very accurate when applied to copper. First, the main methods are briefly reviewed, then the geostatistical formalism will be presented. So far, the latter approach hardly has been used to estimate commodity prices, although it may reconcile both statistics and econometrics via (1) the use of a stochastic approach and (2) the handling of ancillary variables related to the copper market. Another advantage of geostatistical techniques is the ability not only to forecast the copper price, but also to measure the uncertainty associated with it."

The State of California has instrumented numerous buildings, bridges, and dams throughout the state with earthquake recording devices. These accelerometers are strategically placed to measure the response of the structure to a specific seismic event. This comprehensive program enlightens the field of seismic engineering after each earthquake. The Office of Strong Motion Studies, California Strong Motion Instrumentation Program, a sub-branch of the Division of Mines and Geology, provides a professional service unequalled in the world. Within hours of a local earthquake, a preliminary report with the epicenter / hypocenter, structural damage, and time history records are available to all interested parties. The included partial report in the appendix, see section 5.1, is one of the reports that C.S.M.I.P. produced after the Loma Prieta Earthquake of October 17,1989. The diagram on the cover is even of interest. This is a small portion of San Francisco. The values on the diagram are the recorded maximum horizontal ground accelerations at that location in the city. For example, the acceleration at Yerba Buena Island was 0.06g. (The "g" refers to the acceleration of gravity. Thus, a 0.06g acceleration refers to the force, F=m*a, that the structure would experience. For this case, the force would be six percent, 6 % , of the mass of the structure.) Yet, directly on the other side of the Bay Bridge, at Treasure Island, the acceleration was 0.16g. Yerba Buena Island is a natural island composed of hard granular material. Whereas, Treasure Island is a man-made island of imported filled. Here one can see the absorption / transmission difference between hard material, which interact with short seismic wavelengths, and soft cohesive material, which interact with long seismic wavelengths.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been conducting a series of rock mechanics investigations at the Lucky Friday Mime in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho. In the present study, the energy release rate (ERR) index was used to evaluate three underhand stope backfill parameters--cement content, density, and placement gap-to determine their influence on rock bursts. This index provides a relative measure of the likelihood of rock bursting for a given rock mass. It is known that the elastic idealization of the rock mass inherent in this method causes underestimation of stope closure and hence underestimation of the influence of backfill on rock bursting. However, this evaluation still showed that (1) changing from present practice to one in which backfill was omitted altogether would increase the ERR by 42 pct and (2) perfect placement of backfill would reduce the ERR below present practice levels by 28 pct. The easiest step toward perfect placement would be elimination of the placement gap, which accounted for half of the difference in ERR between present practice and ideal placement conditions. There was no indication that increasing initial fill strength through increased cement content would affect the ERR.

Mining is a complex and intensive industry. Extracting raw material with different shapes, sizes, chemistry from the earth?s crust and transform them into a standardized and high quality final product is a big processing challenge - which involves energy and control on large scales. Not only is the physical work challenging, the mining industry today is facing unprecedented challenges: Decline of mineral grade and reserves, cost escalation for new developments and modernization, regulations, safety, lack of skilled people, and market uncertainty are the new constant. It is clear that process control and management of electrical power will be of increasing importance to the recovery rates the mine will achieve. The objective of this paper is to provide a quick vision about future trends and evolutions in technology related to these fields and their impact on Electrical Safety and Control of the mineral recovery. The paper will cover trends in safety, energy management and efficiency, communications of data, control room evolutions, plant integration, other control technologies, and we will examine how these technologies provide information and the benefits of aligned reporting systems to address current industry challenges. More than just the trends or breakthrough concepts, current technologies are available today that can be applied in the mineral recovery operations now to help overcome anticipated future challenges will be presented later in this document. Finally, a brief discussion to look at some real tools to help make real time changes to the process while maximizing recovery and optimizing cost.
