The precision and flexibility provided by these units has enabled the quarry to gain control over fmes and curtail oversize without increasing explosive usage. In addition, the extent of nuisance from blasting vibrations has been reduced.

The primary water supply system for the City of San Francisco and adjacent peninsula areas consists of aging and deteriorated pipelines crossing under the San Francisco Bay (the Bay). This system is highly vulnerable to seismic damage from the nearby San Andreas and Hayward fault zones. The Bay Tunnel Project will replace the existing system with a 8-km-long (5-mi-long) tunnel underneath the Bay. The tunnel will be constructed using earth pressure balance methods and will have a two-pass lining system of precast concrete bolted, gasketed segments for initial support, and a welded steel pipe final lining. The project challenges include tunneling through both soft ground and rock conditions without any intermediate shaft access over the entire alignment. Seismic performance criteria include maintaining service flows after a large earthquake.

For aluminum, substitution of primary with secondary resources decreases energy consumption; this energy advantage creates a strong economic incentive to recycle. Several authors have raised concerns that the current sinks for secondary materials may soon be saturated, impeding subsequent expansion of recycling. This work combines dynamic material flow analysis with optimal batch planning models to quantify the significance and drivers of these pending limits under several scenarios, and thereby explore potential opportunities to increase recycling. An aluminum recycling system case was developed that includes containers and packaging, automotive, and construction products and scraps. The impacts on aggregate scrap utilization and materials cost are explored in the context of changing alloy demand and lifetime. Insights drawn from this specific case study could be applied to multi-stakeholder, systemic models.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Carter Mining Co., conducted vibration tests of four off-road vehicle seats. The purpose of the tests was to determine which seat provided the best vibration attenuation under laboratory conditions. Laboratory tests were constructed to simulate the mining vibration environment within the limitations of the test equipment. The acceleration test levels and corresponding response of the seats were low compared to IS0 2631's fatigue-decreased-proficiency time limits. Two of the seats employed mechanical suspensions and two seats employed air suspensions. The seats were tested using a 22,241-N (5,000-lbf) electrodynamic shaker. Mechanical suspension seats were tested with various preload-to-mass ratios (PMR's) and cushion densities. Air suspension seats were tested with various air pressure levels and seat cushion densities. Air suspension seats provided good vibration attenuation if pressurized greater than 552 kPa (80 psi). Mechanical suspension seats' attenuation performance decreased if the PMR exceeded 9.8. Seat cushions of lower density provided less vibration damping.

"Continuous mining systems containing multiple excavators producing multiple products of raw materials are highly complex, exhibiting strong interdependency between constituents. Furthermore, random variables govern the system, which causes uncertainty in the supply of raw materials: uncertainty in knowledge about the reserve, the quantity demanded by the customers, and the breakdown of equipment. This paper presents a stochastic-based mine process simulator capturing different sources of uncertainties. It aims to quantify the effect of geological uncertainty and its impacts on the ability to deliver contractually defined quantities and qualities of coal, and on the system efficiency in terms of utilization of major equipment. Two different areas of research are combined: geostatistical simulation for capturing geological uncertainty, and stochastic process simulation to predict the performance and reliability of a large continuous mining system.The process of modelling and simulation in this specific production environment is discussed in detail. Problem specification and a new integrated simulation approach are presented. A case study in a large coal mine is used to demonstrate the impacts and evaluate the results in terms of reaching optimal production control decisions to increase average equipment utilization and control coal quality and quantity. The new approach is expected to lead to more robust decisions, improved efficiencies, and better coal quality management.IntroductionContinuous coal mining systems containing multiple excavators producing multiple products of raw materials are highly complex and exhibit strong interdependencies between constituents. This Bureau of Mines report describes 147 known fluorspar deposits in New Mexico and briefly mentions 54 miscellaneous occurrences for which little or no information was obtained. Most miscellaneous occurrences are minor and too poorly exposed to be considered more than prospects. History and production of fluorspar in New Mexico, type of deposition, mineralogy, uses, and grade specifications are discussed. Total mine production of fluorspar in New Mexico is nearly 641,000 tons of various grades of crude ore and hand-sorted material. Fluorspar deposits occur in 13 of the State's 32 counties. Grant, Valencia, and Luna Counties account for 86.4 percent of the total production. During the investigation, 141 deposits were visited. A total of 72 character samples was collected for assay, and 3 larger samples were collected for bench-scale metallurgical tests. Results of these metallurgical tests indicate that an acid-grade product can be obtained with 95 percent recovery of the CaF2 content of the crude ore.

The creation and maintenance of a healthy working environment in surface mining operations require sustained efforts in pursuing advanced research initiatives toward the development and deployment of powered haulage technologies. This paper contains progress summary on a frontier research in truck dynamic control, vision and collision avoidance. This research is required to provide solutions to challenging problems regarding operator visibility in truck haulage in a surface mining environment. The paper focuses on truck control kinematics and dynamics, truck-haul road interactions, intelligent truck sensing, intelligent truck collision avoidance system, integrated system for situational awareness, augmented visualization and operator interface, and field testing and error variance modeling of developed technologies. A sensor suite of four subsystems, including front-side stereo-camera, front-side Doppler radar, close range sonar proximity sensors, and rear-side camera system have been recommended for developing a 360° truck operator vision to allow safe operations. This research initiative is significant because it will provide a strong basis for developing technologies to improve truck haulage safety in surface mines and construction sites.

Ruthenium (Ru) is known as a platinum group element with a very small production volume. In fact, the worldwide annual production of primary Ru metal is only about 20-30 tons, and it depends on the amount of Pt produced, since Ru is a byproduct from Pt smelting. The primary uses of Ru are as a material for resistors, as a catalyst for electrode materials, and as a sputtering target for hard disk memory storage. In order to recover Ru from the spent sand-blasting abrasive media generated during the cleaning of the apparatus used for Ru sputtering, a hydrometallurgical recovery process using hypochlorite solution has been investigated. In this study, various types of recycling processes that are presently under development are also introduced, and their features and differences are discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of the new recycling processes are evaluated, and the possibility of establishing new recycling processes in the future is discussed from a multilateral perspective.

The investigation of the iron-gadolinium phase diagram is part of a project undertaken by the Bureau of Mines and sponsored by the Atomic Energy Commission to investigate rare-earth alloys. Data from the investigation of the iron-gadolinium phase diagram revealed a single eutectic system with very limited terminal solubility and three intermediate phases. The eutectic point occurs at about 85 percent gadolinium, and the eutectic isotherm, which occurs at 850° C., extends from the compound Fe2Gd to 99-plus percent gadolinium. Very little solubility of the solid phases in each other was observed. The three intermediate phases, FegGd, Fe3Gd, and FeaGd, melt incongruently at peritectic isotherms at 1,320°, 1,150°, and 1,080° C., respectively. The crystalline systems of the three phases were determined as follows: FegGd, hexagonal; Fe3Gd, hexagonal or rhombohedral; and FeaGd, face-centered cubic. No lowering or raising of the alpha-gamma iron transformation at 910° C., the gamma-delta iron transformation at 1,388° C., or the gadolinium transformation at 1,262° C. was observed. The principal methods used in determining the iron-gadolinium phase diagram were melting-point determinations, thermal analyses, metallographic examination, and X-ray diffraction analyses. Melting, heat treating, and thermal analyses were conducted in a vacuum or under a helium atmosphere because of the avidity with which oxygen combines with gadolinium at elevated temperatures. A few hardness values were determined, but they had no part in the derivation of the phase diagram. No other mechanical properties were determined.

The concept of disposing of liquid industrial wastes by deep-well injection is not a new one. Brines associated with crude oil long have been disposed of in this manner, with the additional benefit of aiding secondary oil recovery. More recently, with the expansion of nuclear energy, the lethal, highly radioactive wastes which are by-products of the fission process have created severe disposal problems. During the past ten years, a variety of industries have resorted to subsurface disposal, some of the details of which are given elsewhere (1,2). The list reveals wide variations in injection rate, pumping pressure, cost, and waste disposition. Included are successful installations in Western Pennsylvania.

The work to be described is part of a comprehensive research on the influence of impurities on the properties of lead. The author had previously compared an electrolytic lead containing less than 0.002% total impurities with a commercial lead containing 0.008% impurities (excluding oxygen) and had shown that the former recrystallised more readily than the latter under the same conditions of cold work and annealing. This difference in properties was attributed to the difference in purity. Electrolytic lead containing only 0.0005% total impurities has been prepared and cast in vacuo. Some interesting effects have been obtained by working and annealing this lead, and by adding silver to it. The preparation of this lead, and the effects obtained thereon, are described in this paper. It is a great honor to be asked by the Board of Directors of this Institute to deliver the Henry Marion Howe lecture. The invitation carries with it a great responsibility, which I accept with considerable hesitation and with a feeling of unworthiness to perform the duties expected of me in this hour devoted to the memory of the life, character, and work of the late Professor Howe. Many of you recall the scholarly address delivered here a year ago by Prof. Albert Sauveur, and the beautiful tribute he paid to his friend and colleague of many years in the great work of changing the art of iron making into the science of iron. My association with Professor Howe was of brief duration—only one year—and the relation was that of pupil to teacher. My feeling toward him in later years was always that of a humble disciple at the feet of a master. He attained his third academic degree in the year that I was born. I recall the pride I felt when, after entering the steel industry, I received from him, from time to time, letters asking for information or, perchance, asking my opinion, and he was always most punctilious in acknowledging the source of such bits of information in his writings. It was also my good fortune to sit at the feet of another great teacher— Sir William Roberts-Austen, at the Royal School of Mines. I mention him because his name was used by Osmond in coining the word "aus-tenite," which is the subject of this address, and Osmond's suggestion was heartily approved by Howe. These three international metallurgists were the best of friends and delighted to honor the achievements of one another. There are other reasons for mentioning Roberts-Austen at this time. It was an introduction from Howe that opened to me the door of his laboratory as well as of his heart. It was while at Roberts-Austen's laboratory that I worked side by side with William Campbell

Details about some of the researches mentioned may be obtained by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes or in the further list in the Bibliography; other phases of work are reported here for the first time and will be covered in more detail by later publications.

This report contains the results of experimental work conducted by the Bureau of Mines to obtain the heats of formation at 298.15° K. of analcite, dehydrated analcite, lawsonite, anorthite, hexagonal anorthite, and leonhardite. Thermodynamic data for these minerals have applications in ceramics, extractive metallurgy, and particularly in geochemistry. Except for data on anorthite, no previous similar data existed. The present results will be a substantial aid in deriving the temperature-pressure-equilibrium relationships among these minerals. The heats of formation were determined by solution calorimetry, with hydrofluoric acid as the reaction medium. The results were expressed both in terms of the constituent oxides and in terms of the constituent elements. The heat of formation data were combined with related entropy values to obtain the free energies of formation at 298.15° K.

THIS paper presents the results of a study of the relationship of the electrokinetic or zeta potential to flotation phenomena. The relationship is established on the experimental evidence that mineral behavior in flotation and in cataphoresis is generally governed by the chemical properties and amount of the reagents adsorbed at mineral surfaces. Cataphoresis1-5 or electrophoresis is the name given to the movement of a charged particle in a liquid medium under the influence of an applied electric field. Mineral behavior in cataphoresis, as indicated by the magnitude and sign of its ionic charge, can be represented by the term zeta potential. In this paper, the zeta potential represents the difference in potential between the immovable liquid layer attached to the surface of a solid particle and the movable liquid layer in the body of the liquid, and is the result of the tendency of ions on the surface of the particle and within the liquid boundary layer to establish a condition of equilibrium. A high positive zeta potential means that the mineral surface is dominated by cations, a high negative zeta potential indicates domination by anions, and a low zeta potential indicates that the surface is influenced almost equally by cations and anions. In terms of observed quantities the zeta potential is given by the relation [z = 47ruu(300)$ Kx] in which z is the zeta potential expressed in in volts, u the viscosity of the solution in poises, u the velocity of particles in centimeters per second, x the impressed potential gradient in volts per centimeter, and k the dielectric constant of the solution in c.g.s. units. A convenient source for the derivation of the equation is the book by Thomas,6 The term zeta coefficient is an expression coined to denote the difference between the magnitude of the zeta potential of a mineral suspended in solution A, and that of the same mineral suspended in solution B, which consists of solution A and an additional chemical agent, but is at the same pH. For example, the difference between the zeta potential of galena particles in distilled water and that in any chemical solution at the same pH is a zeta coefficient. A series of five signature holes were blasted at the Highvale Mine and the resultant seismic data was analyzed to make recommendations on how best to address neighbour complaints regarding blast vibrations. From an analysis of peak vibration levels measured at the closest neighbour for blasting during 2016, it was determined that the blast vibration intensity varied between 1.4 to 4.3 mm/sec (0.06-0.17 ins./sec.), well below the level of concern for the onset of minor damage to residential structures, however, the frequency of the blast vibrations was between 2.2 and 9.7 Hz, which is within the range of the natural resonant frequency for a single story home. This was determined to be the cause of the neighbour complaints, as the home would be responding to the blast vibrations.

The axial capacity of step tapered bored piles in sand was examined by field tests at one site in Kuwait. Two straight piles, and two step tapered piles were load tested in compression to failure. All four piles were 3 m deep. The straight piles were 0.2 m in diameter. The step tapered piles had a diameter of 0.3 m for the upper segment which extended up to 40% of the pile length changing to 0.2 m diameter for the lower section. The soil profile consists of medium to dense sand with minor cementation and no groundwater was encountered. Both the ultimate bearing capacity and the settlement at working loads were examined. The axial capacity of the step tapered piles was greater, and the settlement at working loads was less, compared with the straight shaft piles. The increase in capacity is mainly attributed to the added side friction along the larger diameter top segment of the shaft.
