This paper discusses the design, construction, and performance of the support of excavation system used at The Atlantic Building jobsite. The support of excavation system had to be adaptable to the different conditions surrounding the site. These conditions included support of four historic building façades, including the nine-story Atlantic Building, as well as support of three historic row-houses along two walls. Directly adjacent to the site is the historic Ford?s Theatre and townhouse. Across a 15? alley is the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) Building, and across a 30? alley is the Federal Election Commission Building and another ongoing excavation. Of historical note, these two alleys were the escape route for John Wilkes Booth following his assassination of President Lincoln. With the excavation being 53? to 58? deep, the system included driven and drilled soldier piles, drilled bracket piles, and two modified tangent walls. The bracing included tiebacks, corner braces, wales, cross lot struts, and a specially designed support system for the nine-story façade. The footprint of the excavation included 12 corners and all alleys and streets were to remain open during construction. The performance requirements for system movement at Ford?s Theatre and AILA Building were ½ inches in the horizontal direction. The modified tangent walls were used in these areas to provide stiffness. The soil conditions at the site were fill material on top of a shallow, sandy, silty, gravel layer on top of a deep layer of soft organic silt and clay. Below the silt and clay layer was fine sandy material at the subgrade.

One way to ensure dragline productivity is by Increasing the size of the dragline bucket. In August 1994, Optimum Colliery in conjunction with Van Reenen Steel, Northwest Applied Technology, SSAB of Sweden and Barlows Equipment launched the new lightweight dragline buckets. Optimum built the first prototype bucket that was used for the deslgn for future buckets. After knowledge had been gained from measuring the input force of the bucket Northwest Technologies designed the new bucket with finite element analysis. Together with the knowledge of quenched and tempered steel from SSAB of Sweden and Barlow Equipment, the new Wrightech bucket was born.

Strategy is about making choices. Mining companies choose to do certain things and not to do other things. Mining is a long-term business, and the choices made typically have large investments attached to them, long payback periods, and significant socio-economic consequences. In today’s uncertain world, it is important to make the right choices. The mining industry in South Africa finds itself in a difficult situation. Operating conditions are tough, the socio-political environment is complex, and financial performance is under pressure. The choices made by all the stakeholders in this industry in the short term will shape the future of the industry. This paper characterizes some of the big, difficult decisions faced by the mining industry in the South African context, and discusses how these decisions could be approached in a fact-based and robust way.

I PROPOSE in this paper to treat of the chimney merely as a heat engine, as one of the devices resorted to in practice for the conversion of heat into mechanical work. For the sake of simplicity and clearness in the discussion, let us consider the subject in its simplest form. Conceive a chamber, heated from without, in free communicatioH at one end with the external atmosphere, and at the other end opening into a vertical chimney. Let the. cross-section of the chamber be so great, relatively to that of the chimney, that we can neglect the actual energy of the air passing through the chamber. We will neglect, also, all passive resistances to the passage of the air. We will assume that the cross-section of the chimney is constant, and that the air in passing through it neither gains nor loses heat. The following symbols will be employed in the discussion : Po = the normal pressure of the atmosphere, which, it is assumed, is the pressure existing at the level of the chamber. Po = 10332.96 kilograms per square meter. P2 = the pressure of the external atmosphere at the top of the chimney. To = the, absolute temperature of melting ice by the centigrade scale. This is assumed to be the temperature of the external air at the level of the chamber. To = 273°. T2 =the absolute temperature of the air as it passes from the chamber to the chimney. T3 =the absolute temperature of the air as it issues from the chimney. to, t2, t3 are the temperatures, as recorded on the centigrade ther¬mometer, corresponding to the absolute temperatures To, T2, T3 re-spectively to = 0° C. A U.S. Bureau of Mines case study of pillar recovery in high-grade ore near the Ross shaft at the Homestake Mine, Lead, SD, has demonstrated the usefulness of the finite-element method for evaluating shaft pillar mining plans and shaft stability. This report focuses on mine measurements and calibration of the two-dimensional computer model and is the second in a series of three Reports of Investigations describing the Ross shaft study. In this study, borehole extensometers and other instruments were installed to provide data for model verification and to monitor the shaft. Results of the recalibrated two-dimensional model (UTAH2) confirmed the premining stability evaluation. However, after mining began, concern was expressed because cracks and other signs of ground motion appeared at considerable distances from the area of active pillar mining. In part 3 of the study, an intense three-dimensional modeling effort using UTAH3 was initiated. The results again showed that the observed effects were within expectations and that the shaft would remain safe. Three-dimensional analyses of alternative pillar mining scenarios indicated that more of the shaft pillar ore reserve could be recovered than previously thought.

Mining has always been, and still is, an activity which is vital for the development of mankind. This is because a predominant proportion of industrial products and energy is produced from raw materials that are excavated using mining methods. The need for environmental protection and the close proximity of urban settlements and mines in Slovenia have necessitated ever stricter requirements for the excavation of raw materials and introduction of more environmentally-friendly mining methods. This is achieved by implementing a closed eco-technological cycle of raw material excavation within the scope of mining methods. In surface mines, this means prompt reclamation of the degraded surfaces, and in underground mines the use of methods with minimized impact on the surface and on underground water. In underground mines, mining methods with backfilling installed according to the multi-barrier disposal system are the only ones that allow the possibility of implementing a closed eco-technological cycle of excavating raw materials. Various industrial waste materials are also included in the backfilling material in order to improve its strength properties. Backfilling consisting of several different waste materials is produced in the form of a composite. Before backfilling consisting of waste material composites can even begin to be used in mines, an environmental impact assessment of its suitability for mines needs to be made. In order to make such an assessment, a pressure leaching cell and an open diffusion cell were made, i.e. a pressure leachate test and a sorption test were developed. The two cells and the developed tests will enable the study of the influence of backfilling on the environment if installed in an underground mine. The pressure leachate test performed with the use of the pressure leaching cell simulates leaching from a consolidated backfill during the seeping of underground water into the backfilling material under pressure. The sorption test performed in an open diffusion cell simulates the flow of eluate leached from the backfilling material through the rock/geotechnical barrier. The two tests were developed in such a manner that they are performed either in succession immediately after one another, but they can also be performed separately at a certain time interval. The paper presents an assessment of the suitability of backfilling made of different waste material composites. The deterioration of concrete, steel, and timber is a serious hindrance to construction in marine and corrosive environments. Composite materials such as fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) can offer performance advantages for construction in these environments. In the last decade, piling made of FRP composites has been used experimentally throughout North America. However, composites face obstacles because they do not have a long track-record of use in civil engineering structures. A comprehensive review of the current experience in research, testing, design, and practice of composite piling is presented in this paper.

The key aspects of process metallurgy that distinguish platinum group metal (PGM) concentrate smelting from that of other base metal sulphide concentrates are presented. These differences include considerably higher input chrome and magnesia contents that directly raise the slag liquidus temperature and have the potential to increase accumulations of refractory spinels. Most importantly, the higher processing temperature required for PGM smelting and the resulting very high matte superheat lead to considerably more onerous smelting conditions than those typical of other smelting operations. This has presented challenges to furnace design and integrity, especially when coupled with the progressive intensification of smelting, involving doubling, and then redoubling, of furnace power inputs over the past 20 years. These power increases have been enabled by increasingly more advanced furnace cooling and structural technologies. Key technologies include strong constant-force spring-loaded bindings acting in three dimensions to minimize infiltration of superheated matte into brick joints, and robust well-cooled tapholes for reliably tapping the superheated matte. The result has been substantially improved productivity, and reduced smelting capital cost outlay per unit of production. A significant challenge, which was not anticipated, presented itself in the form of insidious corrosion of the furnace lining, and especially high-intensity copper cooling elements. Investigation of corrosion in related industries eventually identified chloride-accelerated sulphidation', and this term has been retained as it generically describes the most pertinent aspects of the accelerated low-temperature wear of copper coolers observed in PGM smelting. In addition to discussing the corrosion mechanism, this paper describes a number of solutions that were developed jointly by Anglo American Platinum and Hatch to address the copper corrosion problem. First, new monitoring technologies allowed furnaces to be operated more safely for a longer period of time. Second, a system for replacing corroded coolers from outside the furnace during a fast 'hot' shutdown minimized the impact on furnace operating factor and hearth life. Finally, a corrosion-resistant graphite-protected cooler design significantly improved furnace campaign life, and heralds a more lasting solution to cooler corrosion in PGM furnaces.

A large and increasing data base of apatite fission track results from sedimentary and granitic rocks exposed within the south-eastern highlands and along the continental margin ofAustralia provides constraints for the tectonic development of the south-eastern passive margin. The fission track results suggest that many regions of the south-eastern margin of Australia experienced distinct episodes of relatively rapid cooling during the middle Cretaceous to early Tertiary that can be attributed to the effects of rifting. One cooling episode is middle Cretaceous in age and related to denudation of the south eastern highlands from Tasmania to northern New South Wales between ~90 - 100 Ma. Rocks exposed along the present coast line record a later episode of rapid cooling, which is diachronous and decreases in age northward from ~80 to 90 Ma in northern Tasmania to southern New South Wales, ~60 - 80 Ma in central and northern New South Wales, and to ~50 - 60 Ma in southern Queensland. The results are consistent with models suggesting that underplating occurred inward of the rift along the eastern margin of Australia as a result of the onset of continental extension in the Tasman Sea at ~96 Ma. This resulted in a significant change in base level and km-scale denudation of much of the southeastern highlands. Subsequently, as breakup commenced during the Late Cretaceous at ~80 Ma and continued into the Paleocene at ~60 Ma, the second stage of cooling was imprinted on the rocks along the margin. This cooling is probably due to the relaxation of elevated geothermal gradients associated with rifting as well as some denudation. Because rifting was oblique to the present-day coast, different regions record different ages of cooling associated with the rift. The southern regions of New South Wales and Victoria yield ages associated with earlier rifting while regions of northern New South Wales and southern Queensland give ages associated with later rifting.

Mining is a fundamental activity on which modern society and the world's economy are entirely dependent. Mining investors, large and small, invest on an international scale, frequently being active in several countries.   Prior to committing investment to new countries, the prudent investor will consider the risk involved by analysing a number of physical, financial, administrative and political parameters that impact on the potential financial returns it is seeking. This paper considers these risk factors in relationship to New Zealand and six competitor countries. The conclusion is that for reasons largely within the control of our politicians, New Zealand is a high risk country for mining investors.

A demonstrated reserve base (DRB) of bituminous coal suitable for cokemaking has been estimated based on the latest published information on U.S. coal reserves. Bureau of Mines analyses of raw coalbed samples were used to classify the coals as low-, medium-, and high-volatile bituminous and grade them as premium, marginal, and latent coking coals. Coal rank was used as the basis for identifying coking coals, and ash and sulfur content were used to determine coking coal grade. The demonstrated reserve base of coking coal for the entire United States is 162.67 billion tons. However, only 18.96 billion tons are premium (metallurgical) grade, and between 80 and 99 percent occurs in the Eastern States. The demonstrated reserve base of marginal-grade coking coal is 31.3 billion tons; more than half the marginal reserve base is in the Eastern States, and most of the medium- and low-volatile marginal coals are in the Eastern States. The Eastern and Midwestern States contain most of the latent-grade DRB of 112.4 billion tons; most (106.6 billion tons) is high-volatile coal, and 98 percent of the medium- and low-volatile latent coals occur in the Eastern States. Based on the worst assumption, which assumes that only premium-grade coals are used for cokemaking, the DRB for high-volatile coal would suffice for 127 years, the medium-volatile coal for 80 years, and the low-volatile coal for 83 years.

Particles of a complex nickel sulphide concentrate (containing pyrite, pyrrhotite, pentIandite, and violarite as the major mineralogical constituents) were entrained in a stream of hot gas the temperature of which was varied from 500 to -1000°C. Chemical analysis of the particulates collected from the furnace was used to detect the rapid change in sulphur content which accompanied the ignition temperature jump. X-ray diffraction analysis was used to characterize the oxidized material.These techniques showed that ignition was dependent on the mineralogical composition and occurred over the temperature range 500-900°C. Pyrite ignited first in the range 500-600°C; pyrrhotite was the least reactivemineral and required temperatures in excess of 800°C for ignition. The nickel minerals <pentIandite and violarite decomposed before ignition and ignited at temperatures intermediate to those required for the pyrite and pyrrhotite. The ignition temperature for the pyrite was found to be independent of particle size and concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere.Ignition temperatures determined by the simulated flash smelting method were compared with the results of differential thermal analysis (DTA) measurements performed on the same concentrate. Temperaturesdetermined in the DTA test as corresponding to the start of exothermic activity were shown to be at least 100°C below those determined by the simulation test.

Kennecott Utah Copper adopted Outokumpu Flash Smelting and Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting in 1995, a process based on granulating high grade copper matte. While nickel mattes and very small quantities of copper matte had been commercially granulated for years, no large scale copper matte granulation system had been built. This paper summarizes the history and benefits of copper matte granulation, the Kennecott design basis, the successful operation for over 10 years and potential problems inherent in some matte granulation approaches.

The benefication of non-sulfide or non-metallic minerals by froth flotation has been practiced commercially for at least 30 years. In the pioneer stages of development of this flotation art, most of the promoters investigated were fatty acids or soaps that had been found to float sulfide minerals. When commercial application of froth flotation started to assume importance in the late 1920' s and 1930's, a great deal of fundamental research work was done in the laboratory (11-14, 19, 22, 23, 26, 29, 32). Among other subjects, this work included studies of the relative effectiveness of the different fatty acids and their salts on the flotability of various non-sulfide and non-metallic minerals. The successful present-day use of fatty acid and petroleum sulfonate type promoters results from better understanding of the principles of non-sulfide flotation plus the developnent of effective selectivity modifying agents. Many investigators have contributed to a greater appreciation of the numerous interrelated factors involved in fatty acid and soap flotation of non-sulfide minerals. Of these, mention should be made of recent fundamental studies by Tagart and Arbiter (31); Wolstenholme and Schulman (35); Schulman and Smith (28); Wark and his co-workers(3,4) Du FIietz(l5); and J. Leja(24). According to J. Rogers, K. L. Sutherland and E. E. and I. W. Wark(27), "the basic requirements for a 'collector' in flotation are that it shall form a film over the surface of the mineral to be floated and that this film should be oriented so that hydrocarbon (non-polar) groups form the effective surface." When modified in that way, the mineral surface possesses some degree of air avidity. All investigators would agree with Taggart, Taylor and Ince (33)that such a film can be produced only if the collector compound contains an active (polar) group to be attracted to the mineral surface, as well as the non-polar group. The commonly used anionic-type promoters for non-sulfide, non-metallic and metallic oxide ores include: 1. Fatty acids, and their soaps and emulsions. 2. Fatty acids residues — "pitches" and "foots." 3. Sulfonated and sulfated fatty acids and so-called "petroleum sulfonates." 4. Paraffin chain salts — sulfonated and sulfated higher alcohols. 5. Cyclic organic acids or salts, such as naph-thenic acid and naphthenates. Certain fatty acids are more effective than others as promoters for particular minerals under certain specified conditions. Some of the more costly fatty acids or collectors of the paraffin chain salt type may give improved selectivity in some instances and are being used commercially in a limited number of operations. Local availability may dictate the choice of the fatty acid used — for example, the use of palmoil fatty acid for flotation of copper carbonate ores in the Belgian Congo. Coconut oil fatty acids have also found limited use.

Evaluation of Grinding Medium Wear in Stirred Mills The standard fine grinding machines in the minerals industry are stirred mills whose performance largely depends on the competency of the grinding medium. Medium wear in stirred mills is one of the key parameters for medium selection. A wear evaluation methodology is developed and applied in this paper to measure the wear rate of river sand using a laboratory batch stirred mill. The procedure is demonstrated by testing the sand medium in a 0.55 kW batch stirred media detritor (SMD). The sand wear rate determined in the laboratory batch mill is successfully scaled up to that determined on a full-scale Metso 355 kW SMD mill.

A series of in situ pull tests has been conducted to determine the holding capacity of the standard SS46 Split Set Stabilisers. The experiments have been conducted in a wide range of geological conditions ranging from bedded rock to blocky ground. The results presented in this paper indicate that cement grouted split sets bolts are likely to provide up to three times the initial bond strength per metre of embedment length provided by the ungrouted bolts. The increased load transfer capacity of the grouted bolts provides an alternative for permanent excavation support using split set stabilisers.
