Some 800 analyses for Cu, Zn, Pb, Ag, Fe, S, CaO, MgO, C02, Si02 and Al203 were used to examine the elemental constitution of the Mount Isa ores, and, for comparison, those of the Northern Leases area.Lead: zinc relations show little order from sample to sample, but means of large zones (Le. individual orebodies) show a highly linear inverse relationship. Lead: silver ratios are fairly constant from sample to sample, and means show a highly linear direct relationship.Sulphide sulphur appears to be related to carbonate and alumina abundance, sulphur decreasing systematically with increase in the ratio CO2:AI203. In all graphs involving members of the group CO2-A203-S the lead-zinc and copper ores conform to the same simple trends, confirming that the two ore types and their host rocks are genetically closely related. The earlier deduction of a volcanic-sedimentary origin for the sulphides of the Black Star orebodies appears compatible with present findings.On the basis of such an origin, the pattern of sulphide occurrence and mineralogy in the Mount Isa district is possibly related to the configuration f the upper surface of the "Eastern Creek Volcanics", the facies patterns of the overlying sedimentary rocks, and to the oldest faults affecting the two.INTRODUCTIONStanton (1962) described and interpreted the chemical constitution of the Black Star No. 2 lead-zinc and the 650750 copper orebodies at Mount Isa. Block caving is an underground mining method for the profitable extraction of massive, low-grade orebodies. Lately, it has become the mining method of choice, for many mining companies, because of depleted high-grade orebodies, and declining metal market prices. Block cave mining, however, still faces several challenges. Lack of access to the cave remains a major issue in understanding the rockmass response to mining for method optimisation. Improving our understanding of the rockmass response to caving will lead to safer and more productive operations. Combining large datasets from multiple sources with virtual reality scientific visualisation (VRSV) is a viable alternative to understanding complex cave behaviour without access to the cave. This is achieved using immersive environments with the ability to view complex multi-dimensional data (beyond 3D) graphically. VRSV offers a unique platform where it becomes possible to immerse the multi-disciplinary experts, and/or management team, in a virtual mine environment for quick decision making and fast resolution to conflicting conclusions. The underground mining system is complex due to multiple interrelating factors such as geology, excavation geometries, stress and time. Block caving is even more complex than most underground mining methods due to the network of tunnels required, and the use of induced stress, among others. As a consequence of the complexity in the block caving environment, it is vital that the mining system is analysed holistically, as a system, rather than optimizing individual factors one at a time. This paper presents a customised software module developed for use in the Advanced Visualisation Interactive Environment (AVIE) at The University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, to enable VRSV investigation into block cave mining systems (BCMS). This approach has the potential to provide a better understanding of the effect of time in in rock engineering, which has proven to be an important factor in hard rock mines (Ma & Daemen, 2006; Malan et al., 1997; Suorineni, 2010) but never validated. This work back analyses the early undercutting phase of a case study block caving operation with the view to understanding time/sequence effects. There is evidence that heterogeneous rockmass time-dependent behaviour governs the seismic response of the rockmass following undercut developments.

A variety of commercial detonators (fuse type and electric instantaneous and delay types) were subjected to impact and thermal stimuli to determine initiation stimulus levels and the dominant parameters in resistance to initiation. In the impact trials the detonators were impacted along their length to find the most sensitive region; threshold initiation limits obtained for these regions ranged from 3.47 to 20.82 joules (2.6 to 15.4 ft-lb). The friction sensitivity of the explosive component was an important parameter in determining sensitivity; various construction features of nonexplosive components played a role as well. In the thermal sensitivity trials, the detonators were heated from ambient to 100° C at an average rate of about 1.0° C/min, and thereafter at 0.5° C/min until they exploded; the explosion temperatures observed ranged from 121° to 188° C. These temperatures correlated quite well with the reaction temperatures of certain characteristic explosive components used by different manufacturers. The data also indicated an effect of confinement on explosion temperatures of detonators.

The Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) was established in 1932 in response to proposed regulations that would have threatened prospectors in Ontario. From there, the association grew to represent the interests of Canada?s mineral exploration and development industry. The PDAC?s mission statement reads: ?The PDAC exists to protect and promote the interests of the Canadian mineral exploration sector and to ensure a robust mining industry in Canada. The PDAC will encourage the highest standards of technical, environment, safety and social practices in Canada and internationally. ?Today, the PDAC?s 6,000 individual members include prospectors, developers, geoscientists, consultants, mining executives and students. In addition, the association?s membership includes 950 corporate members, representing senior, mid-sized and junior mining companies in addition to organizations that provide services and equipment to the mining industry. In 2010, the PDAC adopted its e3 Plus principles, a framework to guide its membership in responsible exploration.

To provide insights and assistances for the optimization of ventilation systems for U. S. under-ground coal mines facing both methane control and spontaneous combustion issues, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study is being conducted to investigate the effect of the ventilation scheme on the prevention of spontaneous combustion in longwall gob areas. This report focuses on the flow patterns within the gob under three different ventilation systems; one-entry and two-entry bleederless systems as well as a three-entry bleeder system. The gas flow in the caved gob area is simulated as a laminar flow through porous media while the gas flow in ventilation airways is simulated as a fully developed turbulent flow. The air flow patterns are visualized using flow path lines. Air velocity contours and vector data are also obtained. The possible location of critical velocity zones where the gob is most liable to spontaneous heating is discussed.

This modern plant consists of a battery of 72 Otto Wilputte Compound Under-jet Ovens with extensive plant for the recovery by-products. The ovens produce 9000 tons of furnace coke per week together with some 17,000,000 cub. ft. of coke oven gas, which is used for heating purposes throughout the works and for heating the ovens.Coal is supplied from the, company's colliel'ies and is stored under a Coal Handling Bridge of 264 ft. span and 365 ft. overall, capable of handling 250 tons per hour. The coal storage space of 1600 ft. can. be extended to a maximum of 2800 ft.Preparation of the coal for coking involves fine grinding which is carried out as follows:-Coal is dumped from rail waggons on to a conveyer belt which delivers it to a 12 ft. x 22 ft. Bradford Breaker, with a capacity of 400 tons per hour. The coal, then approximately 4 in. in size, passes, to the mixing bins; and after careful blending is reduced in the,hammer mills to a fineness suitable for the ovens.The fire coal is elevated to the main storage bin over the battery for subsequent charging by electric larry car. The average cokingtime is 15 hrs. 36 mins. At the end of ,this period the doors, are removed and the coke pushed from the oven by a mm. The coke, is, then quenched with fresh, water and sent to the Blast Furnace in 50-ton Copper Waggons.The gas is exhausted from the ovens by Brown Boveri turbine, exhausters of 23,000. cub, ft, per min. capacity. Exhaust steam from these is used for various. purposes in the By-Product plant. After removing the last traces of tar by Electrostatic Precipitators', the gas is bubbled through sulphuric acid, the ammonia forming ammonium sulphate, which is subsequently washed, dried and bagged for sa,le as a fertilizer. The gas then goes to the Benzol Scrubber Towers, where benzol and other derivatives are recovered and later redistilled and purified. The cleaned gas is then piped to the main works for heating purposes, being used with tar to fire the steel furnaces, and also the soaking pits and reheating furnaces.BLAST FURNACES.The company is at present operating two Blast Furnaces of 800, and 1000 tons nominal daily capacity respectively. De Beers? Finsch diamond mine began operation in the 1960s as a surface project using the latest technology available. During the 1990s, the operation, located about 160 km (100 miles) west of Kimberley, South Africa, began its move as an underground mine. The earlier stages (Blocks 1, 2 and 3) of underground work at Finsch used open stope mining methods, also using the latest in technology. The mine began developing Block 4 in 2004. How-ever, studies on this level showed that block caving was a more efficient mining method than open stoping. It was during those studies that De Beers determined that Block 4 would be a good candidate for testing Sandvik?s automated truck haulage technology.

"Underground mine fires can significantly influence mine ventilation airstreams, in some cases throttling or even reversing airflows. As a result, the performance of a metal and nonmetal mine stench fire warning system, which depends on the ventilation to carry the vital warning signal, under fire conditions is different from performance under nonfire conditions. The safety of underground miners can be jeopardized if the warning signal is delayed. This Bureau of Mines report describes research to investigate fire and stench warning system interactions. A computer model is presented that permits quantitative analysis of stench warning signal delays as a function of fire location and intensity. The results of a case study involving computer simulations of stench distribution in a hypothetical mine network subject to various fire exposures are also discussed. This case study illustrates a technique for identifying the areas within a mine that are subject to unacceptable warning signal delays, thereby enabling preemptive action by mine personnel, such as redeployment of stench injectors. INTRODUCTIONFires are an ever-present threat to the safety of underground miners. Since the smoke and toxic gas produced by a mine fire can be spread rapidly by the mine's ventilation system, mine evacuation must be accomplished as quickly as possible in the event of fire. In metal and nonmetal mines, the most common means of passing the fire warning signal to each miner is the stench system. The typical stench system utilizes ethyl mercaptan, a highly odoriferous organic compound, injected on the surface into the compressed and/or ventilation airstreams. Upon smelling the stench, workers evacuate the mine according to an emergency preplan.Although the stench system has been used successfully for over 60 yr, it has several serious shortcomings, owing to certain chemical properties of ethyl mercaptan and to certain performance characteristics and limitations of present injection systems.Recent Bureau research succeeded in upgrading the overall safety and effectiveness of the stench system through the use of a superior stench odorant and the development of improved stench injection equipment (1).4 This research has also investigated a specialized computer simulation model capable of calculating the precise concentration of stench in any mine ventilation network branch at any time after stench release (2). An adaptation of the computer model now enables the analysis of stench system and ventilation system interactions under the influence of a mine fire."

The value of protective clothing in the prevention of injuries has long been recognized in many of the leading industries , but the adoption of the idea into mine safety programs is comparatively new . Once started , however , the idea has grown rapidly and the results already obtained by mining companies have shown that it is fundamentally sound . Both coal and metal mining companies are rapidly adopting these protective measures , and since 1924 many mines have become well equipped with eye , head , and foot protection . At the present time approximately 70 percent of the employees in the anthracite mines of Pennsylvania are provided with safety hats . At many metal mines all employees are provided with safety hats, shoes , and goggles . The Pennsylvania mining law provides that all shaft · workers in anthracite mines shall wear protective hats . In According to a study³ made of the nature of 3,485 temporary injuries and of the parts of the body of underground coal mine employees most exposed to occupational hazards , the head and face were injured 665 times , the hands 856 times , and the feet 565 times . Of 2,555 temporary injuries in metal mines , the head and face received 484 , the hands 788 , and the feet 357 . a similar study4 made by a coal -mining company for the year 1928 , of 556 injuries the scalp received 9 , the skull. 4 , the eyes 47 , the hands 62 , the thumbs 21 , the fingers 141 , the ankle , the feet 51 , and the toes 35 . Diesel powered equipment has been operated in underground coal fir mare than 50 years. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), there are approximately 3,000 diesel units operating in underground coal mines in the United States. This number is expected to reach 5,000 diesel units in 250 coal mines by the year 2000. Also, there are approximately 5,000 diesel units operating in metal/nonmetal mines such as trine, potash and salt mines: and more than 3,000 diesel units operating in Canada. This increased popularity of diesel powered equipment over trolley wire, electric trailing cable or battery powered equipment is because of improved safety, greater mobility, higher productivity and increased power of diesel equipment. The operation if diesel powered equipment is not without challenges. Diesel engines generate exhaust emissions, in particular carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur dioxide, unburned hydrocarbons, and diesel particulate matter that must be maintained at safe levels. The chief method to control ambient exposure has been dilution by ventilation. A new concept to ensure continued safe ambient emissions levels from diesel equipment in underground mines is the EMISSIONS MANAGEMENT PROGRAM™. The program encompasses all factors that will influence diesel emissions. By ESTABLISHING low tailpipe emissions through technology, such as clean engines, clean fuel selection, exhaust aftertreatment devices and filtration of the exhaust gases via the Dry System ™, this program ensures that the baseline emissions are at their lowest technically feasible concentrations. The DST Dry System™ exhaust conditioner reduces DPM by over 98%, as demonstrated through laboratory research at the West Virginia University. Carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions and odor are similarly reduced. MAINTAINING these low emissions requires an expanded training program for operators and mechanics, onboard feed-back devices and a maintenance program with special focus on events and faults that can alter emissions. Finally, an on-board emissions sampling system allows the mechanic to VERIFY emissions levels and help diagnose engine faults. If the tailpipe emissions fall outside an established limit for a particular equipment, corrective actions will be initiated.

Keywords: co-generation, furnace CO-gas cleaning, disintegrator scrubber, Theisen In a closed, electric, reduction furnace, no oxygen enters the furnace from the surrounding environment. The off-gases are thus not ?burnt? and therefore contain a considerable amount of CO and H2. Traditionally these gases have been captured and burnt in a flare stack. Recent developments have led operators of such furnaces to revise this strategy and to consider utilising these gases as a fuel for gas-fired generator sets to produce electricity, thus becoming more energy efficient. On 31 March 2010 the new emission standards, in accordance with the Air Quality Act, Act 39 of 2004, were promulgated. The minimum emission standards according to the act require that the particulate matter emissions from the primary fume-capture systems on closed furnaces for ?new plants? in ferroalloy and calcium carbide production not exceed 50 mg/Nm³ and 25 mg/Nm³, respectively. By implementing co-generation, the producer automatically complies with the new environmental emission standards for an off-gas. As much as 30% of the electrical power cost, which is set to double in the near future, can be saved by partly generating one?s own electrical power. In December 2010, the National Treasury published a discussion paper for public comment, one entitled ?Reducing greenhouse gas emissions: The carbon tax option?. Irrespective of how the tax is finally implemented, it will result in an increase of production costs in affected industries. This paper focuses on the characteristics of a furnace-off-gas cleaning system for closed ferroalloy smelters, characteristics that meet the requirements of both reducing solid-matter emissions and operating a safe and reliable gas plant.

IN a mine with any considerable output the economical handling and transport of ore underground is a matter of prime importance, and in the design or lay-out of a trucking system the question of what form the points and crossings are to take should be one of the first considered. Trucks may be moved from one line of rails to another by the following means: by flat sheets, with which may be coupled turn-tables, or by points and crossings. The latter class may be further divided into fixed and movable points.Flat sheets and turn-tables, owing to the time and skill needed by the trucker in using them, are seldom of great value with large tonnages, unless for purely temporary work, and the choice narrows down to one between fixed and movable points andcrossings. Both systems have their disadvantages - movable points being liable to jamb with dirt and get out of order, whilst with fixed points trucks may sometimes run over the points and capsize, or go on to the wrong line, though this is not of frequent occurrence. On the other hand. the fixed points are simple, easily laid, and strong, and there is no necessity for the trucker to work any levers, the truck being guided on to its new direction by screwing.Cast-iron points and crossings were first introduced into the North mine during the opening-up of the 950-ft. level, and the first arrangement was designed for a double turn-out in the main crosscut. Since then both the points and crossings have beenmodified several times, and it may be interesting to briefly outline the various forms through which they have passed, showing the reasons for the retention of some features and the rejection of others.

This paper reports on a study of 43 compression load tests (five fully instrumented) and ten pullout tests of auger cast-in-place (ACIP) piles in sand. Eight design methods reported in the literature were used to predict the measured pile capacities. Ultimate load capacities of the ACIP load tests were determined using two different definitions of ultimate capacity and compared with predictions. Load transfer behavior was determined from a study of the fully instrumented pile tests and compared to predicted values. Recommendations are made regarding the design approach most appropriate for these foundations and the best procedure for estimating ultimate capacity from pile load tests.

"The Glencore Raglan mine Concentrator, located in Quebec’s Nunavik region, has been in operation since 1997. The nickel metallurgical plant was originally designed to process 100 tonnes per hour of ore to produce 130 000 tonnes of nickel concentrate per year at 16% Ni. The increased grinding capacity and the discovery of rich ore bodies have increased the annual production to more than 190 000 tonnes of concentrate at 19% Ni. In 2014, the Metallurgical group, with support from BBA, implemented an expert control system on the flotation circuit. This project was initiated to cope with the high variability of the concentrator’s feed. Increasing the plant recovery and final concentrate grade were also important project objectives. The implementation of the expert system ensures better control of concentrate inventory while maintaining maximum plant throughput. This paper describes the successful implementation of the new control system, the control technology selection and the flotation circuit optimization. It will also discuss the performances obtained with this new approach and the improved process stability.IntroductionThe Raglan Mine is located in Northern Quebec along the 62th parallel. High titania slag is produced from the smelting of ilmenite. These slags contain approximately 85 per cent TiO2 and consist mainly of a M3O5 solid-solution phase. During cooling the slag can decrepitate to a fine particulate material, which decreases the value of the product. Based on X-ray diffraction analyses of the decrepitated slag after cooling, it was found that the M3O5 phase had almost disappeared. The disappearance of the M3O5 phase was linked to oxidation of the slag. A M6O11 phase formed in the decrepitated slag. It is postulated that decrepitation of high titania slag is caused by volume changes due to the oxidation of the M3O5 phase in the slag.

Understanding relationships between mineralogy, texture, microstructural features, and element distribution and residence in minerals, is critical for accurate modeling of mineral weathering in waste-rock piles. The morphology of minerals and deformation structures, such as veins and faults, are important factors that control: (1) fluid access to the mineral surface to initiate dissolution, (2) the distribution of trace elements, and (3) formation of secondary minerals. We characterized the mineralogy, textures, and chemical properties of waste-rock material at three sites at scales ranging from outcrop to micrometer scale. A comprehensive hand-sample to thin-section scale methodology utilizing light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe, and laser ablation ICP-MS was used to thoroughly characterize the waste-rock material.

A medida que la extracción del mineral progresa, la necesidad de madera en la construcción de edificios e instalaciones de la mina, también se incrementa. Por ello, el objetivo del presente trabajo señala la importancia de la madera como factor de producción en la industría minera, al tiempo que describe la silvicultura como técnica agronómica de ayuda en dicha manufactura. Revisando los cuadros estadísticos realizados en el Perú durante los años 1949- 1955, muestran que de cada extracción global de minerales (metálicos y carbón), obtenemos el promedio de 0,9 pies cúbicos de madera por tonelada de mineral extraído, con un equivalente de 5 pies tablares por pie cúbico, como factor de conversión. El problema surge cuando al intentar desplazar la venta de madera importada, se agotan las fuentes de desabastecimiento local, generando una crisis de reservas en el mercado libre. En consecuencia, se propone el establecimiento de plantaciones forestales en áreas localizadas y dentro del plazo de 10 a 12 años, las cuales prolongarán la conservación de la madera nacional, mejorarán la calidad de la misma y a su vez disminuirán los precios de venta.

This Bureau of Mines study was made to obtain and present facts concerning the production and marketing of rare-earth metals and thorium in the Central and Southern Rocky Mountains (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming, referred to in this report as the region) and to review the current demand for these elements in the United States. Little or no published information was available on the marketing practices for these commodities. As a result of many inquiries from industry, potential prospectors, and the general public, the various factors of resources, production (present and potential), marketing, and consumption have been investigated, and the results are set forth in this report. Material concerning occurrences and deposits is from published references detailed in the bibliography.

Introduction Mineral exploration interest, principally for gold, in the south-western Pacific has surged to new proportions. This is primarily due to the application of epithermal exploration concepts in the Australian-Oceana region. Other factors that have contributed to the high level of exploration interest include governmental policies supportive of mineral exploration, along with relative ease of tenure access and a relatively short bureaucratic process. This paper highlights exploration and development activities in the North Island of New Zealand, Fiji, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea (Fig. 1). It provides a framework to understand the overall recent enthusiasm that has been brought to the south Pacific by explorationists. Through these recent developments, it is clear that the south Pacific region will become a significant gold producing area and thereby worthy of attention and study. Papua New Guinea alone is the free world's seventh largest producer (Table 1). And, with the addition of production from deposits presently being developed, this status is likely to be raised. History Gold was first noted on various Pacific islands in the late 1500s by Spanish explorers. They thought they had reached the legendary King Solomon mines. Since then, the history of prospecting in the southwest Pacific has coincided with the colonization of the region. Settlers in New Zealand extensively mined alluvial and lode gold deposits starting in the 1850s. The spread of European colonization to the more remote Pacific islands from 1880-1940 was accompanied by varying degrees of prospecting activity by planters, traders, and settlers. Some were successful, others may have been successful, but never returned due to hostile indigenous peoples or disease. In general, records of such prospecting activity are meager and exploration leads are, in some cases, gained through local village folk memory. Most early discoveries were alluvial finds. These led to placer operations, particularly in New Zealand, the Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea. Continued prospecting located lode deposits such as the Morobe Gold-field of Papua New Guinea, the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand, and the Emperor of Fiji. Some areas were prospected thoroughly. Yet others, such as Vanuatu, remained relatively unexplored until the present exploration surge began. During World War II, interest in minerals was diverted. It was renewed significantly until the middle 1960s and early 1970s when regional porphyry copper exploration was conducted.
