El Complejo Pasco —ubicado en la Cordillera Oriental de los Andes de la sierra central del Perú, en el distrito de San Francisco de Asís, provincia y departamento de Pasco— está constituido por las unidades subterráneas de Atacocha y Porvenir, la operación a tajo abierto Glory Hole y tres proyectos brownfield ubicados en la periferia de la concesión. Tanto Atacocha como Porvenir son depósitos tipo skarn, con mineralización distal de Zn y Pb(+/-Au) y proximal de Zn+/-Cu, asociados a cuerpos hipoabisales de composición cuarzoandesítica y andesítica. Estudios y exploraciones recientes muestran otros tipos de sistemas mineralizados, como brechas tectónicas con reactivación hidrotermal tardía, un sistema epitermal de sulfuración intermedia en vetas, cuerpos irregulares, entre otros, y un sistema tipo pórfido. La Falla Milpo-Atacocha, de rumbo N-S, juega un rol importante, ya que los intrusivos (Stock Milpo y Santa Bárbara) que generan la mineralización del tipo skarn están controlados por esta falla. Existe otro tipo de mineralización, asociado al sistema NW-SE (Falla 13): un sistema epitermal de sulfuración intermedia. Este trabajo pretende mostrar los últimos avances en las interpretaciones metalogenéticas, producto de un intenso programa de exploración (aproximadamente 80,000 m. DDH / 2018) y de un programa de recategorización de recursos (a través de 60,000 m. DDH), que permitirá hacer posible una operación sostenible de 12 años.

THESE forums have been held annually since they were introduced by Mr. L. E. Djingheuzian in 1957. The response of millmen to questionnaires such as the one this year is ample evidence of the interest these create. This year's topic is unlike those of past years since it is an attempt to understand a new concept of grinding rather than to improve the old. Before, we were thinking in terms of 2-5 cents improvement in grinding costs, now we will be discussing savings of 15-2 5 cents. As a background for this forum we will begin by summarizing the major controversial issues relating to grinding with steel, many of which will undoubtedly apply to pebble milling. Our •task to-day is to learn what has already been done in pebble milling and obtain a fair overall view of this method of grinding.

Electrodeposited copper of the 1860s was of unprecedented purity, although the profound significance of this achievement was not fully realised until the dawn of the electrical age a decade or so later. By the 1870s there were three somewhat large (4 to 4.5 tonnes Cu/day) electrolytic copper refineries in Germany based on J. B. Elkington’s process, first patented in the United Kingdom in 1865. More such refineries were planned throughout Europe. At the same time, copper output in the U.S.A. was starting to expand and with the spread of European electrolytic copper refining technology across the Atlantic, the door opened to major increases in North American output. The technology was first taken up in 1879 by James Douglas at the Chemical Copper Company in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, where he was Superintendent. Douglas was assisted in this pioneering work by Edward Weston. The copper refinery at the Chemical Copper Company was small, not unlike the first plants in Europe. The present authors contend that the electrolytic copper refinery at the Chemical Copper should be regarded as the first copper refinery in the United States. The Balbach Copper Refinery in New Jersey, which commenced operations in 1883 with an initial production of about 2 tonnes Cu/day, has been erroneously considered as the “first commercial refinery”; it rightly belongs in second place. The early developments at these plants are discussed in this paper. INTRODUCTION In the mid-1800s, the main uses for copper were as sheathing on the wooden sailing ships of the day to protect from marine growth, boiler components in locomotives and steam engines, along with some construction uses. Copper ores were generally smelted, and further fire-refined for market. The recovery of gold and silver, if present in payable amounts, was a slow and relatively expensive step. This situation regarding copper would change by the 1870s with advances in the generation and use of electricity. The introduction of the dynamo led to major developments in electrorefining. First demonstrated in principle by Faraday in 1831 (Faraday, 1832), the dynamo was subsequently adapted and further developed by J.S. Woolrich for electro-metallurgical applications in 1842 (Woolrich, 1842; Napier, 1845). It provided a new source of power with the unprecedented potential to significantly change the scale of metal production by electrometallurgy. Interestingly enough, copper would be needed for the electrical age just beginning. By 1869, advances in dynamo design offered relatively reliable large machines, which enabled J. B. Elkington in the United Kingdom to use the dynamo in the radically new Pembrey copper electrorefinery — the first copper electrorefinery in the world (Wraith, 2013). Initial production at Pembrey was small — in the range of 1 to 2 tonnes/day — while gold and silver were recovered more readily by the treatment of the slimes than with methods used hitherto.

Changes in reductant and energy inputs which are required to adjust the slag composition in an ilmenite smelter to a higher or lower FeO content are calculated. The calculated changes are based on the assumption that solidification equilibrium with the freeze lining constrains the slag composition to follow a eutectic groove in the TiO2-FeO-TiO1.5phase diagram. Calculated equilibrium conditions along the eutectic groove are presented, and form the basis of the calculations. The inputs of energy and carbon need to deviate strongly from the steady-state values to adjust the slag composition. The inputs required at any given time depend on the desired rate of change of the slag composition, and the current slag composition. The steady-state relationship of a change in energy input of 5 kWh corresponding to a 1 kg change in carbon input also holds for the changed inputs during transient changes in FeO content. This study was conducted to make a limited evaluation of experimental and standard tractor dozer blades. A field test program was conducted in the southeastern part of Kansas on strip-mined areas where the spoil banks are parallel with rest-to-crest distances between 90 and 120 ft and maximum dozing distances usually less than 50 ft. This evaluation was a part of an overall joint Pittsburg and Midway Mining Company--U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Specialized Reclamation Field Test Program primarily centered on the field t sting of experimental high-volume lateral relocation blades. The three blades evaluated were the 60-ft-wide angle (A) blade mounted on two 41B tractors. a 48-ft-wide A blade mounted on two D9H tractors, and a 13-ft-wide reclamation universal (Rec U) blade mounted on a D9H tractor. In addition to the experimental blades, three commercially available blades were tested: A 20-ft universal (U) blade mounted on two side-by-side (SxS) D9H tractors; a 20-ft U blade mounted on a 418 tractor; and a l2-ft straight (S) blade mounted on a D8H tractor. The dozer blade evaluations compared measured blade performance with soil and other site characteristics and with estimated earth-moving performance rates based on earthmoving methodology that accounts for the traction and speed of the tractor. The earthmoving methodology was also validated with data collected during this program.

The relationship between the maceral composition of coal and the strength of the coke produced from that coal has received a great deal of attention in recent years.Studies using two Bulli Seam coals, and blends of Bulli and Wongawilli Seam coals, from the IIIawarra Measures of the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales were carried out.The optimum range of vitrinite was found to lie between 45 per cent and 60 per cent (mineral matter free).Above and below this vitrinite range coke strength deteriorated. Coke strength indices increased with rank, and the optimum vitrinite content increased with an increase in rank. These changes require confirmation as trends by testing a third level of rank. It was noted that vitrinite content decreased with an increase in the specific gravity of separation of the coal.Use of petrographic analyses will increase confidence in choosing coals for coking, provided the coals are well known. Such analyses offer the possibility of greater flexibility in coal purchases and the possibility of producing a marketable blend from coals, which have limited market potential. Critical base coals for blends can be conserved.Significantly more work is required before coal reserves can be utilized to optimum advantage. This work would require extension of the studies discussed in this paper and, in particular, the testing of a wider range of rank.

Technologies and systems used in the management of energy consumption in the mining and metal processing industry are well understood and documented from the supply side of the business. It is our contention that in many instances, through a more complete understanding of the demand side of the business, based on the detail of the operations plan, will provide greater lead time in terms of the design, implementation and utilisation of power supply infrastructure. Thus, optimal management of demand in a proactive manner, based on production requirements, will ensure both security of supply as well as continuity of operations. This paper describes the technology and methodology that is being developed to enable the above statement to be achieved. We use a case study to demonstrate the ability of the tools and methodology and conclude by outlining the business benefits achievable as well as the future developments emanating from this initiative.

The beneficiation of heavy metal oxides, such as iron ore, is usually performed with heavy medium separation in cyclones, static baths and lately with Larcodems. Atomized ferrosilicon is most suitable as a heavy medium at densities above 3600 kg/m3 whereas a mixture of milled and atomized ferrosilicon is suitable at densities below 3600 kg/m3. When operating a beneficiation plant at densities higher than 3600 kg/m3 the quality of the ferrosilicon particles is an important factor that influences the control of the beneficiation process. Therefore, it is important to know how the rheology would be affected by the ferrosilicon quality as it also influences the control of the process at these elevated densities. Background The Kumba Resources Sishen Iron Ore Mine in South Africa produces 26.5 Mt iron ore per annum from its beneficiation plant. The ore body consists mainly of laminated and massive type hematite ore that is crushed down to ?90mm before being beneficiated by means of a combination of Wemco drums, Larcodem and dense medium cyclone separators. The need for higher densities When the percentage of high-density gangue2 is higher than normal in the run-of-mine (ROM), a higher separation density is necessary to produce a product to specification. Certain ore types of this quality in the Sishen reserves require a separating density higher than 4000 kg/m3, whereas densities would normally average 3600 kg/m3 when beneficiating ores of normal high-density gangue content. Sink and float tests conducted on the ROM material at Sishen revealed some interesting characteristics. In the waste fraction, (density < 3600 kg/m3) it was found that the %Fe was <21% (Fig. 1). Similarly, for the product fraction (density >3000 kg/m3), the percentage Fe varied between 35% and 67.2%. The bulk of the material (88%) actually had a density greater than 4000 kg/m3 and a Fe content that varied between 63% and 67.2%. At a density interval of 3600 to 4000 kg/m3, the Fe content varied from 37% to 60% with an average of 45%.

"Gowest Gold Ltd. is in the process of developing the Frankfield East gold deposit located along the largely undeveloped Pipestone fault northeast of Timmins, Ontario. In addition to resource development and environmental permitting work the company has had an ongoing program of metallurgical and engineering studies aimed at evaluating options for processing the Frankfield East ore. Mineralization at the Frankfield project contains arsenopyrite and pyrite as the major sulphide minerals. Bulk flotation of all sulphides results in extremely high gold recovery. However, the gold is almost entirely associated with the arsenopyrite fraction of the ore and is refractory in nature requiring preoxidation treatment. Selective flotation was investigated to recover a gold-arsenopyrite concentrate thereby reducing the mass which would be subjected to further gold processing. As part of this work, a pyrite concentrate low in arsenic content was also recovered that would be suitable as a source of sulphur for a smelter (or other pyrometallurgical facility). Production of separate arsenopyrite and pyrite concentrates is frequently examined but rarely adopted due to the distribution of gold between the two products or the inability to achieve adequate separation. Several flowsheet options were investigated in the study. The best results were achieved following a sequential flotation flowsheet. The flowsheet configuration was key to meeting the targets for the two products. In this paper, the various options investigated are reviewed and the results of the final flowsheet are presented. The overall plan by Gowest was to evaluate all process options to bring the Frankfield East deposit into production. The ability to effectively separate the arsenopyrite and pyrite components in the ore provides Gowest with added opportunities to pursue both short and long term production scenarios."

Development of the New York City Water Supply System The New York City water supply system serves a population of almost nine million, including residents in neighboring counties. Peak day demands on the system are currently running at about 70 m3/sec (about 1,600 mgd), which is significantly lower than in the 1990s. This trend of reducing demands over the past 25 years, which has been experienced in other major urban centers in the US, is mainly the result of conservation measures and increased cost consciousness on the part of water users. In the long term, demands are expected to once again follow an increasing trend with population growth, so that by the end of the planning horizon of these studies, the year2045, the peak day demand is expected to increase to about 85 m3/sec (2,000 mgd).The system is served largely by surface water sources, regulated by a system of 19reservoirs and three controlled lakes, which are connected to the City by a series of aqueducts, the longest of which is about 87 km (54 miles). The total storage in the sys-tem amounts to about 560 billion gallons, providing a system firm yield of about1300 mgd. The Delaware system provides about 50% of the City’s water, the Catskill about 40%, with the remaining 10% provided by the Croton. The system as a whole, which is shown on Figure 1, has been built up over the past 150 years, and is truly a marvel of engineering. The Catskill and Delaware aqueducts both discharge into Kensico Reservoir, which is a daily balancing reservoir located in Westchester County about 24 km(15 miles) north of the New York City line. The two aqueducts extend south for a further 14 miles to combine again at Hillview Reservoir in the Bronx, which provides hourly balancing storage for New York City system. The Croton aqueduct runs nearby as shown on Figure 2, but does not connect into the two reservoirs. From Hillview Reservoir the water is supplied to the city via three main distribution tunnels, known as City Tunnels 1, 2, and 3. City Tunnel No.1 was developed in the 1920s as part of the Catskill system. City Tunnel No. 2 followed in the 1960s as part of the Delaware system. City Tunnel No. 3 (CT3) is partly under construction and partly in operation, and is being implemented to permit the other distribution tunnels to be taken out of operation for the first time for inspection and maintenance. Nautilus Minerals (Nautilus) is following the lead of the petroleum industry as it strives to tap vast offshore resources. Planning is well underway for the Solwara 1 Project in the Bismarck Sea, Papua New Guinea (PNG) to recover high-grade seafloor massive sulphide deposits in 1600 m water depth. The deposit contains an average copper grade >10 times higher than a typical land-based porphyry copper mine. The high grades combined with a relatively small amount of overburden ensure the Solwara 1 Project will have a significantly smaller physical footprint than its land-based counterparts. Offshore minerals production also has the advantage of minimal social disturbance. Nautilus is dedicated to setting a high environmental and social responsibility standard. Nautilus recognises the importance of transparent and inclusive stakeholder engagement and has taken a proactive approach to involve as many key stakeholders as possible. One of the first steps in the permitting process in PNG is the preparation of the Environmental Inception Report, which describes the project, its envisaged impacts and the proposed studies for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Local (PNG-based) and international environmental scientists, anthropologists, NGOs and other experts were involved in the definition of studies conducted for the Solwara 1 EIA and a team of world-leading experts was involved with carrying out the studies, culminating in the preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). To ensure transparency, collaborating researchers are free to publish their findings. Following its submission, the EIS was made available for public review and public hearings were held at several locations. The EIS has also undergone a rigorous independent review by PNG government-engaged consultants. Outside the permitting process, Nautilus works alongside government officials to carry out ongoing community consultations. Information dissemination and feedback acquisition has also occurred through the Nautilus website and attendance at a number of international conferences, workshops, and meetings. This paper will outline the leading edge approach Nautilus has taken in completing the environmental impact statement for the world?s first deep seafloor copper-gold mine. In addition, this paper will review the permitting process and the government and stakeholder engagement undertaken as part of Nautilus? desire to ?do it right? in this exciting new industry.

"Pressure leaching is an option for copper recovery from chalcopyrite. Leaching takes place at high temperatures and pressures in the presence of an oxidising agent. This work shows how the performance of pressure leaching circuits may be improved by optimising the configuration of autoclaves and the heat-removal method. The objective was achieved by creating an autoclave model by combining mass balances, energy balances and population balances. A base-case circuit consisting of a single autoclave was chosen, and this base case was compared with options for increasing capacity by adding more autoclaves to the circuit. These capacity–increase options include circuits in which the additional autoclave is added in parallel, in series and in series with thickening between the two autoclaves. The copper extraction, productivity and cooling requirements for these options are compared. The series circuit with inter-stage thickening has the highest extraction and productivity, however, the cooling duty in the first autoclave is high. In addition to comparing circuit options, three options for heat removal were investigated: cooling coils, quench water and flash recycling. The flash-recycle option results in the highest copper extraction, and the quench-water option gives the lowest copper extraction. INTRODUCTION Background Copper sulfide ores and concentrates containing chalcopyrite are typically hard to leach under atmospheric conditions. Smelting of these ores may also be a challenge, due to the inability of smelting processes to handle low-grade ores, as well as impurities such as arsenic and antimony. Alternative hydrometallurgical routes to treating chalcopyrite are therefore required. One option is pressure leaching, which is the focus of this work. In the pressure leaching process, sulfide ores and concentrates are leached in autoclaves at temperatures of 200 to 220°C and a pressure of about 3000 kPa (Schlesinger et al., 2011). An oxidising agent, usually oxygen, is required to oxidise sulfide ions to sulfate ions. The oxidation of sulfur to sulfate is exothermic; consequently, a method of heat removal is necessary in order to maintain the temperature in the autoclave."

"The study evaluated the impact on overall circuit metallurgy of improving the performance of the two flotation columns that make up the final Mo cleaning stage in the Cu/Mo separation circuit at Highland Valley Copper mine. The results showed that a key factor to improve the overall circuit metallurgy was to control the size of the bubbles generated in the columns. When a large proportion of small (< 1 mm) bubbles were generated, the production rate of solids-in-concentrate increased by a factor of 4-5 compared to typical production figures without compromising concentrate quality. This increase in concentrate production rate reduced the circulating load in the circuit causing a significant increase of Mo recovery. A statistical analysis of historical production data showed a strong relationship between final concentrate production rate and overall Mo recovery. This relationship along with the results from this study indicated an opportunity to increase the recovery of Mo from 90% (typical) to 94% without downgrading concentrate grade. This 4% increase represents about 14,000 lbs or $500,000 worth of Mo each month at current metal prices.To provide a rational interpretation of the results, this study also examined whether the model of Gorain et al. (1997; 1998; 1999) could explain the increase of Mo recovery seemingly resulting from the decrease of bubble size. The data showed that the model predictions did not agree with the experimental data, i.e., for a given change (decrease) of bubble size, the predictions underestimated significantly the observed recovery increase. An interpretation based on the fundamental analysis of Finch and Dobby (1990) and Hernandez-Aguilar et al. (2005) is proposed to explain the discrepancy between measurements and predictions obtained from Gorain et al.’s model.INTRODUCTIONIt is generally accepted that the size of the bubbles generated in a flotation cell – a concept usually referred to as “bubble size” – has a significant effect on metallurgical performance. However, a significant number of mineral processing practitioners often question, with valid reasons, the practical benefits of implementing process improvement strategies based on controlling bubble size. “Small” bubbles are often considered to be “favourable”, but how small they need to be for a particular case, or how to adjust operating conditions to control a target bubble size, or whether the bubbles need to be smaller in the first place are questions that usually remain unanswered. Traditional risk quantification methods provide little information on the sources of risk, and tend to produce static over-conservative evaluations, which do not account for changes in the performance of the project. Capital investment decisions for large mining projects require of more complex risk evaluation models, that include the value of flexibility and the different risk levels associated with uncertainty on project variables (price, grade, dilution, production rates, among many other). In this context, Real Option Valuation (ROV) methods have proven potential to quantify the risk associated with such variables and integrate alternative scenarios and management strategies into the evaluation process. In this paper, a risk quantification model is developed, which successfully quantifies the risk associated to dilution, as a function of production rate. This model is then validated in a case study on the Chuquicamata Underground Mining Project.

n the early days of the Hauraki goldfield (1866 to 1889) almost the only system of ore treatment was wet crushing followed by copper plate amalgamation. A further saving of bullion was in most cases obtained from the tailings by means of pans or berdans. Though this system was not always as efficient as might have been desired it answered fairly well for the bulk of the gold-bearing quartz of the Thames and Coromandel districts, where the gold occurs chiefly in the form of visible particles, and there is not a great deal of silver. It failed, however, with most of the ore found in the Upper Thames or Ohinemuri district, especially in the Karangahake and Waihi portions of the field. In those days the cyanide process was not, and the usual prescription of the mining &quot; expert&quot; was smelting. At Karangahake, many attempts were made to discover a payable method of treatment for the so-called&quot; refractory&quot; ore, but on thewhole with very &apos;little success, and the district struggled along for a number of years without adding very materially to the production of gold in New Zealand. At Waihi, the Martha Co.&apos;s stamp battery treated by wet crushing and copper plate amalgamation some 18,000 tons from the Martha Reef, worth probablyat least &#163;4 per ton, but the average return was considerably less than &#163;1 per ton, a sum which barely paid working, expenses, and consequently the shareholders were glad...

ABSRACT: In this paper numerical simulation of jointed block mass behaviour obtained in an experimental study has been presented. Singh et al. (2002) conducted extensive tests on the jointed model materials with several joint configurations. The results of this experimental study were used to validate the strength behaviour of numerical block mass model developed using professionally available software. This software basically contains different kinds of material models. From the results of numerical simulation the existence of strength anisotropy was observed. The strength anisotropy so obtained has been compared with the experimental values reported by Singh et al. (2002). The anisotropic curves in both cases are U-shaped with flat base. They show good agreement in sliding mode of failure zone in which inclination ß (= 90° - ?) of joint set-I lie between 20° to 40° for all cases of interlocking. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: In dieser numerischen Papiersimulation des verbundenen Blockmasse Verhaltens, das in einer experimentellen Studie erhalten wird, ist dargestellt worden. Singh et al. (2002) leiteten umfangreiche Tests auf den verbundenen vorbildlichen Materialien mit einigen gemeinsamen Konfigurationen. Les résultats de cette étude expérimentale ont été employés pour valider le comportement de résistance du modèle numérique de la masse de bloc développé en utilisant le logiciel professionnellement disponible. Ce logiciel contient fondamentalement différents genres de modèles matériels. Des résultats de la simulation numérique on a observé l&apos;existence de l&apos;anisotropie de force. L&apos;anisotropie de force ainsi obtenu a été comparée aux valeurs expérimentales rapportées par Singh et autres (2002). Les courbes anisotropes dans les deux cas sont en U avec la base plate. "The Canada/Nova Scotia Mineral Development Agreement (M.D.A.) is a subsidiary of a five-year Economic and Regional Development Agreement, signed on June 11, 1984. The objectives of the M.D.A. are to strengthen and diversify the Nova Scotian mineral industry and to coordinate federal and provincial policies and programs. The agreement outlines the activities and responsibilities of each government, including the division of the cost (60:40, federal: provincial) between governments. The agreement established a framework for joint planning to avoid overlap or duplication of programs.The M.D.A. programs are broadly divided into five sectors (Table 1 and Fig. 1): Geoscience, Minerals Technology, Development, Firm Specific and Public Information. Each sector is administered by a subcommittee composed of one federal member and one provincial member. The subcommittees report to a Management Committee. The Canada/Nova Scotia Mineral Development Agreement (M.D.A.) Management Committee is made up of Dr. Jack Reeves from EMR and Dr. Richard Potter from the NSDME.The Geoscience subcommittee, co-chaired by Peter Giles (NSDME) and William Poole (EMR), manages the regional geologic, geochemical and geophysical studies in the province. Included in this sector are studies into mineral deposits and the basic geological relationships between mineral deposits.The Mineral Technology sector is co-chaired by the authors, Don Doyle (CANMET) and Pat Hannon (NSDME). This sector of the M.D.A. conducts studies into mineral processing, sampling, deposit byproduct commodities and project feasibility analysis."

The use of comparative sampling methods during the evaluation of the tin-copper deposits at Cleveland mine yielded closely checking average results from groove, channel, AXT split diamond drill core, and bulk sampling for both tin and copper content of the ore.The weighted mean tin and copper grades and values for the groove, channel, and split core samples showed small percentage differences from bulk sample results, and the F-ratio test for single population origin of the four types of samples was accepted at the 99&#183; 5 per cent level of confidence.These results indicate that grade estimates based on the assays from AXT split diamond drill core and/or groove samples would be reliable within practical limits.

This paper describes the economic study of longwall versus bord and pillar mining using all continuous miners for a colliery located at the South Coast district of New South Wales, Australia. In this district longwall mining appears to be a better economic proposition than bord and pillar. The internal rate of return on investment is found to remain approximately constant for each method irrespective of life. The economic importance of percentage extraction of coal is shown to be small for high values of minimum rates of return, becoming more significant as the minimum rate of return decreases.
