"INTRODUCTION A commercial-scale pilot plant for gasification of lignite was completed by the Bureau of Mines at Grand Forks, N. Dak., early in 1945 as an extension of work on, gasification of low-rank coals initiated in a smaller pilot plant at Golden, Colo., during 1943. The development work on this plant was part of a program to make reducing gases from lignite for beneficiation of low-grade iron ores. The background of this project has been described in a previous report. 6/ The present report describes the major features of the large pilot plant, a record of experimental operating data during five runs totaling about 1,800 hours, .and results of experimental work on the small pilot plant at Golden during 1945.This project has created considerable interest because heretofore there has been little success in several attempts to gasify American lignites.Furthermore, the methed employed is a departure from conventional processes. Natural lignite is fed continuously into an externally heated annular retort and is converted into water gas by heat conducted through alloy metal walls. Because of the high thermal conductivity of metal, the rate of gasification is several times greater than can be obtained when employing refractory walls. The process has been developed to a part that leaves one major question unanswered. - ""How long will the alloy last under practical operating conditions?"" - and this question has aroussed the interest of the Coal Division of the Bureau of Mines in this new development.Owing to the high reactivity of the lower-rank fuels, the water-gas reactions proceed rapidly at medium temperatures of 1,650°F. to 1,800°F. These temperatures can be attained in a reaction zone heated by external means when the temperature of the retort does not exceed 1,900°F. while transferring from 6,000 to 7,000 B.t.u. per hour per square foot. Such rates are several times greater than can be attained through refractory walls as employed in the Didier-Bubaig 7/ and the Ahrens processes. 7/ Therefore, the investment cost of the gas generator per unit of capacity will be considerably lower for the higher-capacity process. However, the maintenance cost of metal vessels will be higher than that of refractory retorts, and this emphasizes the importance of large-scale operation to determine the life of an alloy retort under practical operating. conditions."

Mining engineers frequently encounter complex design problems for which the critical components of the design are difficult to quantify or compare. Teams of people typically work on these designs and human perceptions and judgments play a strong role. To assist with this process, the analytical hierarchical process (AHP) as a decisionmaking tool is described in this paper. Although the technique is used in many other disciplines, it is currently not widely used in mining engineering in South Africa. To use the AHP process, the problem should be treated as a hierarchy that defines the goal, the alternatives to reach it, and the criteria for evaluation of these alternatives. Pair wise comparisons are conducted on the criteria of the hierarchy to establish priorities. The value of the technique is that it is simple to test for consistency amongst the pair wise comparisons to ensure that the answer obtained is better than that provided by a random selection. To illustrate the technique, the use of a backfill support system in a platinum mining project was investigated. Ten design parameters, which will be impacted by the use of backfill, were identified and weighted according to their relative importance. The result of the AHP evaluation was that the use of a backfill support system should be preferred to a conventional support system at the mine.

The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) District will be extending BART service south along an 8.7-km (5.4-mile) -long corridor in the city of Fremont, California as part of the Warm Springs Extension (WSX). The WSX project will link the existing BART system to the future BART to San Jose extension. A segment of WSX is located in Fremont Central Park (referred to as the Fremont Central Park Subway Project). The Fremont Central Park Subway is considered the most complicated and geotechnically challenging portion of the project with an underground subway box being constructed near the active Hayward Fault which is capable of ground motions up to 0.75 g and is located in an aquifer which is used for water storage and supply. Soil-structure interaction analysis was used in the design of the subway box to resist deformations due to earthquake ground motions. A water-tight excavation support system has been designed to allow subway box construction while minimizing impacts to the aquifer.

The Mount Angelo prospect outcrops as two copper rich gossans, the larger of which is 250 ft long and 70 ftwide. The mineralization is epigenetic and replaces part of a brecciated and disturbed lime tone and calcareou sediment sequence.Magnetic and self potential survey indicated a substantial body of sulphide mineralization, the top of which was approximately 100 ft below the surface.Diamond drilling confirmed this and established the presence of a mineral body of at least 500,000 tons, extending to a depth of 300 ft. Of the 500,000 tons, 200,000 ton are primary copper ore which a ays 2 per cent copper.This mineral body is not economic at present, but could become economic if copper mining is established elsewhere in the district...

This technology canthen be used to assess the vulnerability of various geotechnical structures to explosive loading.Applications of this technology include assessing the effectiveness of earth penetrating weapons,evaluating the vulnerability of various structures, counter-terrorism, and model validation. Thisdocument describes the development of expertise in scale model explosive testing ongeotechnical structures using Sandia’s large scale centrifuge facility. This study focused onburied structures such as hardened storage bunkers or tunnels. Data from this study was used toevaluate the predictive capabilities oft existing hydrocodes and structural dynamics codesdeveloped at Sandia National Laboratories (such as Pronto/SPH, Pronto/CTH, and ALEGRA)."

The widening of the Panama Canal to approximately 130 feet (40 m) for its entire length began just a few years ago. The original expansion program was slated for completion in 18 to 20 years, but has recently been reduced for completion within the next four years. This means that a tremendous amount of blasting at simultaneous points along the canal, by both the Panama Canal Commission (PCC) and many subcontractors, is necessary to achieve the new completion deadline. The accelerated program also imposed many logistical concerns, since marine trafIic is always heavy and cannot be stopped for blasting. Because some of the large and heavy cargo vessels clear the bottom of the canal by only about 6 feet ( 2 m), the blasting cannot result in any large boulders into the center of the canal, for fear of grounding and damaging a vessel, not to mention the traffic delays and lost income of approximately 1 to 2 million dollars per day.

Zincor experienced significant losses of metallic zinc to dross during the melting of zinc cathode plates. In this study five factors affecting the formation of dross are identified from literature. Dross from both the plant and that produced in the laboratory is characterized using XRD. An empirical model, based on laboratory-scale investigations, was developed to quantify the effect these factors on their own or in combination with each other has on the amount of zinc loss to dross. The predictive capability of the model is evaluated based on the laboratory-scale investigations. Predictions are made on the effects that heat treating the cathode plates prior to melting, increasing the cathode plate thickness, washing and drying prior to melting, and loading the furnace in a controlled manner have on the amount of zinc loss to dross. The major elements essential to plant growth are nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus. These three constituents of the soil are removed relatively rapidly by growing crops and consequently are the main constituents of commercial fertilizers. Scientific studies, however, have progressively revealed the fact that a number of other plant foods, many of which are not necessarily supplied in commercial fertilizers, are necessary to assist plant growth and fruit production and that soils deficient in certain of these minor elements may be made much more productive by adding them. The farmer looks to the miner to furnish most of the elements requisite to plant growth, which have to be supplied through the medium of fertilizer additions. It follows that the mining industry should keep an eye upon developments in the fertilizer industry and in the results of soil studies as a possible outlet for mineral products. The important industries engaged in the production and marketing of the three principal pant nutrients have already been described in Bureau of Mines publications .3 The present paper discusses the commercial implications with respect to other elements that are now employed as soil additions.

The Beacon Hill Station and Tunnels portion of the Sound Transit Central Link Project consists of one mile of twin rapid transit tunnels, an underground station, portals and ancillary works constructed in an urban environment. Presently under construction, the station will set a number of North American firsts including deepest soft ground excavation carried out using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM).Located in highly variable glacial soil deposits ranging from soft, water bearing sands to stiff, slickensided clays, the station complex and running tunnels proved to be technically challenging during design. Meeting these challenges necessitated an extensive geotechnical investigation, a trial shaft, and state-of-the-art numerical analyses to develop ground conditioning, pre-support, excavation support and structural design. A comprehensive risk identification and mitigation program, and innovative procurement strategy were incorporated into the design and contract bid documents.

"The Buffalo gold deposit is a small deposit consisting of auriferous quartz-tourmaline veins within a granodiorite stock in the Red Lake greenstone belt. This study aims to characterize the mineralizing fluids through fluid inclusion and stable isotope analyses and to compare them with those of the world-class Campbell- Red Lake deposit. Four types of fluid inclusions were recognized, including carbonic, aqueous-carbonic, aqueous, and halite-bearing aqueous, with the carbonic type being the most abundant. Raman analyses indicate that the carbonic phase mainly consists of CO2, with minor amounts of N2 and CH4, and rarely detectable H2S. The homogenization temperatures of the carbonic inclusions range from -41.7° to 30.9°C. The homogenization temperatures and salinities of the aqueous, halite-bearing aqueous, and aqueous-carbonic inclusions are 130° to 276°C and 9.7 to 23.6 wt.% NaCl equiv., 155° to 207°C and 32.9 to 42.3 wt.% NaCl equiv., and 215° to 357°C and 8.3 to 19.7 wt.% NaCl equiv., respectively. The d18OVSMOW values of tourmaline range from 8.2‰ to 9.0‰, and those of quartz from 11.4‰ to 11.9‰, with estimated fluid temperatures from 323° to 399°C based on the quartz-tourmaline isotopic geothermometer. It is postulated that separate CO2-dominated and aqueous fluids intermittently invaded the fracture/vein system in response to fluid pressure fluctuations, with limited mixing. The CO2-dominated fluid, previously recognized in Campbell-Red Lake as the main mineralizing fluid, is inferred to have been derived from deeper parts of the crust. This deep CO2-dominated fluid reservoir might have been a common source for gold mineralization in the Red Lake greenstone belt. The studies previously made on Smelting in the Lead Blast Furnace have dealt with the custom smelter of the International Smelting Co. at Tooele, Utah, and on the smelter of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Smelting Co. at Kellogg, Idaho. The International plant may be considered representative of the traditional custom smelter. The lead smelter of the future seemingly will have to treat increasingly richer lead charges. This feature was then stressed in describing the Bunker Hill plant.

For the extension of the Paper Mill of Parenco in Renkum, the Netherlands, the application of a pile foundation was required. The demands for this pile foundation were very explicit a vibration free and soil displacing pile systems with low allowable settlement. Another important aspect was the total amount of piles (originally over 1600 auger piles) which had to be executed within 3 months, in very difficult and unhomogeneous soil. Based upon these conditions the Tubex Grout Injection Pile was chosen to be used for this project. This system involves the drilling of a steel tube with a conical pile shoe while grout is injected at the point simultaneously, creating a mixed-in-place layer around the tube. INTRODUCTION After extensive marketing, the board of directors of Parenco, decided to a large extension of the production capacity of its paper mill by building a new production building called Paper Mill 1 or PM-1. The new PM-1 extension had to be constructed beside the existing PM-2 because of limited terrain. The site is located right between the Rhine river and Renkum, approximately 15 kilometers (10 miles) west from Arnhem (see figure 1). The construction involved the building of the PM-1 extension of approximately 250 meters (820 ft.) long by 40-60 metres wide (130-200 ft.). The main structure was to be constructed of precast concrete beams and columns.

ABSTRACT This paper evaluates the potential of freeze-thaw dewatering using Albian mature fine tailings (MFT). Freezing tests were first performed to study the effect of freezing rate on dewatering efficiency. Lower freezing rate resulted in higher thawed solids content and shear strength. Subsequently, large strain consolidation tests were conducted to investigate consolidation behaviour and how it is affected by freeze-thaw. The consolidation behaviour was presented in terms of effective stress versus void ratio and permeability versus void ratio. The results can be used to predict the field behaviour of Albian MFT and optimize the application of freeze-thaw for MFT dewatering.

"INTRODUCTION The major objective of our research is to help reduce the incidence and severity of coal worker's pneumoconiosis (CWP). To that end, this project is designed to improve our understanding of the processes that lead to pulmonary dysfunction following mine dust exposure, and how those processes might be interrupted or attenuated. The response of the lung ' to inhaled particles is complex, and the course of development of disabling CWP is slow and unpredictable. From among the numerous cellular and molecular interactions involved in the pulmonary response to inhaled particles, this project is focussed on the role that the pulmonary alveolar macrophage (PAM) may play in regulating the activity of fibroblasts.The PAM is the lung cell that has the most immediate and the most obvious interaction with inhaled particles. Within a short period after particles are arrested in the alveolus of the lung, they are phagocytized (engulfed) by these specialized cells. The PAM then has a diverse potential repertoire of subsequent activities. Which reaction actually ensues is determined, in large part, by the nature of the phagocytized _particles. Activated PAMs produce a variety of products that may affect adjacent lung tissue, including superoxide free radical, elastase, collagenase, prostaglandins, platelet activating factor, etc. Those may well be important in the pathogenesis of CWP, but they are beyond the scope of this project. Background information that is cogent to this project has come primarily from investigations using animal models of silicosis and asbestosis. PAMs that have ingested silica particles synthesize and release molecules that control the behavior of surrounding cells. One such mediator is interleukin-1 (IL-1), a molecule that plays a central role in many aspects of the response to injury. It can stimulate fibroblasts (the cells that help to hold tissues together) to release the enzyme collagenase, resulting in breakdown of the structural collagen fibers that support the lung tissue. IL-1 also stimulates fibroblasts to undergo mitosis and to proliferate, which is an initial stage of fibrosis. Certain stimulants cause PAMs to release fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) that are distinct- from IL-1. Under other circumstances activated PAMs synthesize and release molecules that stimulate fibroblasts to accelerate synthesis of collagen fibers, thus contributing to fibrosis. Although these observations provide a valuable precedent for analysis of the mechanisms involved in CWP, their relevance to CWP cannot be assumed since most of those studies involved macrophages or fibroblasts obtained from tissues other than the lung, and because almost none of them have used CMD as the stimulating particles. Therefore, the goal of this project is to learn how exposure to CMD affects the behavior of PAMs, and in turn how products of dust-exposed PAMs affect fibroblasts and the process of fibrosis in the lung."

Most types of nuclear power reactors use uranium dioxide fuel. Power reactors using natural uranium dioxide fuel are of special interest to countries such as Australia that have their own uranium supplies. A wide range of uranium dioxide powders can be fabricated and the ideal one flows readily, presses without the need for binders or lubricants, sinters to the required density and gives low reject rates at all fabrication stages. Sinterable uranium dioxide is usually produced via the ammonium diuranate route.The Australian Atomic Energy Commission is aiming to demonstrate production of nuclear grade uranium dioxide from Australian concentrates, improving technology where possible. Details are given of the dissolution, solvent extraction, precipitation, filtration, drying, and· calcination-reduction steps. Solvent extraction from sulphate media is also under study with a view to developing a process to produce a nuclear grade product at the mine treatment plant site.

Mine sealing programs for the alleviation of acid mine drainage were begun by the Federal Government in the '30's. As part of an acid mine research project to The Ohio State University, a field test was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of mine seals for reducing mine acid. Details of the tests made at the McDaniels mine show the feasibility of air-sealing and flooding an acid-producing drift coal mine. Work by the University continues. The Federal Government undertook in the early thirties an extensive mine sealing program for the alleviation of acid mine drainage. In the states of West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania many general summaries have been made on this program but no critical evaluation with supporting data has been found on the effectiveness of mine seals for reducing mine acid. Because of this it was decided to undertake a field testing program as part of an acid mine research project of the Engineering Experiment Station, The Ohio State University. The objective of this phase of the project was to develop and install a field research laboratory for acid mine drainage studies. Specifications for such a mine laboratory were developed and resulted from the following considerations: 1) Size and preservation—the test mine shou1d be of limited size to permit frequent and detailed examinations; it should be in a reasonably sound condition to permit safe entry. 2) Isolation—the mine should be physically separated from all other mines. 3) Openings—a minimum number would be desirable to reduce the sealing problem. 4) Structure—the mine especially near the openings should be structurally sound. 5) Acid production—the mine should be producing significant quantities of acid. After considerable searching, the McDaniels mine was selected in the Hocking coal field in Vinton County just above Lake Hope State Park in southeastern Ohio. The small drift mine in the middle Kittaning coal consisted of two small rooms with one mine opening about 6 ft above a seasonal stream bed. Before it was finally decided to seal the mine, a short study was made of the acid drainage over several months. Fig. 1 shows a plot of acidity (milligrams per liter), flow (gallons per minute), and acid production (pounds per day) vs time over the sampling period. Preparation, understanding and use of soils reports must be a team effort to be fully effective. The soils engineer must know what is to be built and exactly where. The structural engineer and owner must be fully informed on the foundation problems of the site. There must be frequent team review of information obtained from subsurface investigation and of design as details develop. The soils engineer should be available on a continuing team basis as design proceeds and should be directly involved with inspection and interpretation of site conditions as construction continues.

If all stratifications are horizontal, the computation of surface deformation induced by coal mining involves the prediction of roof and floor convergence and then the transfer of the effects of this relative displacement to the surface through the use of the appropriate influence functions. A laminated model, in the form of a quasi- continuum, provides a simple means of computing the approximate convergence distribution and leads to the Gaussian distribution as the influence function. The ideas presented in this paper represent a subtle but fundamental generalization of the influence function Method. It is postulated that the influence of a small area of extraction is proportional to the roof and floor convergence and not to the thickness extracted. This difference in definition removes many conceptual difficulties associated with the influence function method. To demonstrate the utility of the model, the surface disturbances induced by the extraction of a parallel sided long panel are derived. Formulae giving subsidence, tilt, horizontal displacement and strain are given.

Expansion and the economic growth in the southwestern region of Missouri necessitated the expansion of State Route 249 and the construction of a new interchange to provide service to the Joplin, Missouri area. The project is located above a former lead and zinc mine in Jasper County, Missouri and includes a five bridge interchange connecting State Route 249 and US Route 171. The variable subsurface conditions, both natural and manmade, prompted the design team to use ground improvement via grouting and small diameter micropiles to provide support for several of the bridge foundations on the project. The scope of work included mine shaft closures, 56,000 ft of overburden and rock drilling, 11,139 ft of micropiles, 524 cy of balanced/stabilized high mobility grouts, and over 8,700 cy of low mobility grout. The selection of the grout used was based on the actual subsurface conditions. Low mobility grout (LMG) was used in voided conditions and for closure of the mine shafts encountered during the excavation. High mobility grout (HMG) was used in fractured rock with the goal of improving the mechanical properties of the rock underneath the future bridge footings and controlling grout volumes during micropile installation. The split spacing method was utilized for both LMG and HMG holes. Geology of the project site subsurface consisted of extremely variable bedrock with strong to very strong limestone, chert, breccia, extremely weak shale, and weak to strong sandstone. Previous activities associated with the mining disturbance (such as partial filled vertical mine shafts, shallow and deep mine horizons, modified hydrology including artesian conditions) further complicates the site subsurface conditions. Real time monitoring and recording of all drilling and grouting parameters was conducted to assist in the evaluation of in-situ geological properties of the site in order to modify the ground improvement and micropile program as necessary. This paper will discuss the design and execution of the ground improvement and micropile program. The project is an excellent example of the use of multiple ground improvement and foundation support techniques combined with real time data analysis to provide a foundation support solution for a complex geological environment.
