GOLD has played a part in the development of Australia. The total yield exceeds SIX hundred million pounds sterling, while the glamour of gold-mining and the unfailing demand for the product have enhanced its influence. The production is still considerable, but the yield is less than one-quarter of that twenty years previously, while the number of men employed has dropped from 70,000 to 11,000. Not only has there been a marked decline in production, but it is anticipated that thisdecline will continue, and continue more markedly. It is therefore desirable to ascertain the causes of the decline and inquire into means for diminishing or preventing it.The problem under discussion is far from being only local. Finlay states: The grand feature of the history of the business has been the progress of an economic cycle unfavourable to gold milling. The USA yield fell from $101,000,000 to $44,000,000.South Afriea has for some time produced one-half of the world's gold; yet in the Mining and Scientific Press of 11th February, IH22, General Smuts is quoted as saying that if the premium disappeared entirely 24 out of 34 mines would shut down. The nature of a stone deposit is rarely defined through exploration and engineering design, but more through the actual experience encountered as the mine develops; hence, issues with ground control are often at the forefront for a new mine. Ground control problems account for over 15 percent of lost-time injuries in underground stone mines. The objective of this work is to present actions taken during early development of a stone mine to mitigate the obvious effects of high horizontal stress on ground control. The mine was developed from a box cut with relatively little cover, and high horizontal stresses were not anticipated. Early recognition of possible high horizontal stress resulted in mapping of the mine using the NIOSH-developed Roof Fall Risk Index (RFRI) to provide a baseline to objectively analyze roof conditions. A program of borescoping the mine roof provided valuable roof beam thickness data and found that the roof beam was of minimal thickness, approximately 10 percent of drift width. As the mine developed, it became apparent that ground control problems related to high horizontal stress existed. A concentrated effort was made to improve ground conditions by implemeting a number of mitigation techniques. Actions taken by the mine included systematic roof support, reorientation of mining direction, a lower roof horizon, reduced span widths and reduced mining height in crosscuts to prevent running falls. These strategies resulted in signifcantly improved ground stability.

This study investigates the enrichment of a low-grade colemanite concentrate (-3 mm) using a Knelson centrifugal gravity concentrator. Due to its low boron content, the concentrate is unsaleable and has to be stored under appropriate conditions to avoid potential environmental problems. The low-grade colemanite concentrate was comminuted to size fractions of-1 mm, -0.5 mm, and -0.15 mm before treatment in the Knelson Concentrator. The effects of particle size, fluidizing water velocity, and bowl speed on the enrichment process were examined. The B2O3content of the concentrate was increased from 33.96% to a maximum of 45.52%. B2O3recovery increased with increasing bowl speed and particle size, and decreased with increasing fluidizing water velocity. The enrichment process also rejected arsenic and iron to some extent, with a maximum reduction of arsenic from 1360 g/t to 765 g/t and iron from 0.88% to0.33%.

"After many years of safety activity in the United States in one form or another it becomes increasingly evident to those in contact with safety work that to achieve continuous good results in accident prevention there must be an aggressive organization behind the safety movement at each mine with fairly definite plan and policy. A study of the methods used by various companies and the results they have attained will be of value to the common cause of safety promotion.A study has been made of the safety records of the Menominee iron range in the Lake Superior district, and of data from the county mine inspector's report. Several companies on this iron range that have attained a certain measure of success in their work of accident prevention have given data, and a summary of their safety methods is presented.The Menominee iron range of Michigan lies in the southern portion of the upper peninsula of Michigan, bordering on Wisconsin. It consists of two main. divisions--the West Menominee Range, situated in Iron County in the vicinity of Iron River and Crystal Palls, and the East Menominee range situated in Dickinson County in the neighborhood or iron Mountain, Mich. The mines about Iron River and Crystal Falls are peculiarly subject to fires in a carbonaceous, sulphur-bearing black slate which appears in the footwall. This gives considerable trouble because fires in this material start from spontaneous heating. The methods of mining are top slicing and open stoping, working on benches along the sides of the stopes. The character of the ground varies from medium Soft ore to relatively hard ore which permits open stoping. Approximately one-third of the operating mines are equipped with a fan for main mechanical ventilation. The remainder are ventilated by natural draft. The East Menominee range is the older, top slicing having been used there for a number of years, and the timber mats have boon well developed. In common with all districts, some companies pay more attention to safety than others, although, those which do riot have the best records do pay some attention to safety.During the past three years the annual production per man employed has remained about constant, but in many mines a general decrease is shown in the accident record. The variation in the results attained can be ascribed mainly to the earnestness with which accident-prevention work is pursued, essentially regardless of the method of mining used. This is shown to be generally true, because the record indicates a steady decrease in one mine with an active safety department, while in adjoining mines with the same kind of ground and method of mining but where not such intensive attention has been paid to safety work, the accident record is high."

Miners, like many skilled blue-collar workers, are not traditional learners. They have not generally been successful in classroom-type settings, preferring to learn on the job in a hands-on environment. U.S. miners are required to have annual safety training, but they rarely view this positively. In fact, it has been called “safety jail” by many of them, who regard it as a time to get a little extra sleep. The challenge then, was to find a way to develop effective safety training for these people, particularly in view of the fact that their work is among the most dangerous of all occupations. Miners are born story tellers. They share “near-miss” stories, stories about master miners they have known, and stories about how things used to be. These stories not only pass along information about what will happen if a miner fails to respect the mining environ-ment, they also instruct listeners in the culture of mining and the values it embraces. Stories, it seems, are a way to get safety messages to miners, especially inexperienced ones, and using older, wiser miners in these stories is an obvious choice. This paper will discuss how the training videos created to get safety messages to miners were developed, how “master miners” and story lines were chosen, and how the resulting videos have been received in the mining industry.

The threat of global warming and its prominent position in public discussion and political debate requires all industry to take stock of its contribution to rising atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases. For the primary metals industry, the first step must be to identify the pattern and range of emissions at each step in the production chain. Only then can the industry assess the economic consequences of the penalties on emissions that will be imposed by governments and regulators and devise cost-effective plans to avoid or mitigate such penalties. While some work has been done to estimate carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions using Life Cycle Inventory analysis, this approach is less useful than site-by-site emissions estimates. It is the level of specific emissions at each site that will ultimately deter-mine carbon taxation liabilities and participation in emissions trading schemes. Most mining companies have moved with the times to issue sustainability reports for their operations. But in the absence of any standardized reporting format, it is difficult to make useful comparisons between even the best-reported producers on a like-with-like basis. For this reason, Minecost.com modeled the use of fuels and energy used in mining, milling, shipping and metallurgical treatment to cover ?cradle-to-gate? emissions of greenhouse gases resulting from the production of the major base metals copper, zinc, lead and nickel. Greenhouse gas emissions ? overwhelmingly carbon dioxide ? are associated with the consumption of energy at every step in the production chain, from exploration through mining to the production of refined metal. Producers of primary metal employ diverse technologies to mine, mill, smelt and refine several different types of ore. Every orebody has its own special characteristics. In addition, most base metals are produced in concentrate that must be transported to smelters, with con-sequent emissions consequences.

The effect of ligand and pH value was studied. Two issues in coprecipitation route to synthesize fibrous nickel-cobalt alloy precursor powder, com-position and morphology which are a first priority, are addressed based on thermodynamic analysis and experiments. The results show that suitable pH value range of coprecipitation of nickel ions and cobalt ions in theory can be obtained to maintain fibrous, excellent compositonal homogeneity and stoichiometry in coprecipitation products. Experimental demonstration is also carried out.

Introduction An integrated oil company has two options in approaching strategic planning. It has to decide whether it is in business for the long-term. I state this in all seriousness. Those who help manage public companies have the responsibility of good stewardship of other people's money. We must decide whether continued investment in our basic business will generate a reasonable rate of return. With a world surplus of petroleum production capacity, and continuing downward pressure on prices, this question should be addressed by all oil companies. And a positive answer is not necessarily a foregone conclusion in all cases. The decision should be made based on proven competence in finding and developing petroleum reserves on a cost-competitive basis with other producers, and on a frank analysis of future prospects. This should include a realistic assessment of the projected rate of return on specific investment projects. If a company did not pass these tests, its strategy could take one of four paths. Diversification First, it could diversify. But recent history suggests that oil companies are not good at managing other businesses. Second, it could seek a buyer for its business at the optimum return for its owners. Third, it could sell its assets on a piecemeal basis. And, fourth, it could adopt a longer-range plan of self-liquidation by living off current recoverable reserves. In other words, by not investing in exploration and development, it could maximize short-term profit and pass the money back to shareholders in the form of dividends. The Conoco component of DuPont has a below-average cost of finding petroleum, a good track record of efficient production, and a full plate of projects that pass the test of return-on-investment. In short, Conoco is in business for the long-term. That fact, in itself, determines at least one key element in strategy. This is to extend the life of the petroleum reserve base while at the same time maintaining maximum efficient rates of production to provide a strong cash flow. A company that is able to maintain a strong reserve base will ultimately see the value of those reserves escalate as world oil supplies tighten. Our planners expect this tightening to occur within the next decade as demand grows and production in non-OPEC areas of the world begins to decline. An exploration program tailored to meet the requirements of reserve replacement and current production should have two basic parts. Tasks during Phase I of this contract effort were performed in four principal functional areas. These were geology, hydrology, reclamation and mining. Data were gathered from literature reviews, mine visits, survey of manufacturers, consultation with government agencies, and unpublished or private communications with contractors and consultants. The data collected were analyzed for omissions or inaccuracies, then organized into tables, graphs and flow charts to provide a concise body of technical and cost data suitable for the engineering analyses required in Phase II of this contract. Maps illustrating estimated grade and thickness of the oil shale were prepared, some of which are included as exhibits to this report. A preliminary mine layout was performed to test the completeness of the collected data.

"Upon successful completion of the AG/SAG Mill project (Cooper et al., 2001) the Brunswick Mine concentrator was configured with single line processing through the AG/SAG mill, followed by two parallel ball mill and flotation circuits. The Stage Grinding project was undertaken to utilize a pre-flotation stage on the AG/SAG mill primary cyclone overflow and simplify the flowsheet by consolidating the two ball mill and flotation circuits, resulting in single line processing fi-om AG/SAG mill to final concentrate. Concurrently, the reclaim water supply capacity was increased to enable flotation cleaning at lower percent solids.Benefits from the Stage Grinding project include revenue enhancement from increased zinc grade and recovery combined with additional lead recovery. Further benefits included a reduction in the number of process pumps, reduction in loss associated with spillage to sumps and process simplification through efficient use of equipment layout.The Stage Grinding project was implemented in six phases over a period of seven months in 2000. Each phase was commissioned during scheduled concentrator shopdays with minimal additional downtime required. One year after project approval the Stage Grinding project was completed at a total cost of $1 1.8 million.INTRODUCTIONThe Noranda Inc. Brunswick Mine, located near Bathurst, New Brunswick, is one of the world’s largest leadzinc mines. Milling of ore began in 1964 from the No. 12 orebody, with an expansion in 1966 to accommodate ore fkom the No. 6 open pit located several kilometers away. In 1980 the pit was exhausted and the concentrator rationalized to accept a design feed rate of 10,500 tomes per day from the No. 12 mine. In excess of 100 million tomes have been milled to date, representing over three-quarters of the known reserve. The concentrator employs differential froth flotation to produce lead, zinc, copper and leauzinc bulk concentrates. The ore is massive sulphide, with approximately 20% valuable minerals, 60% pyrite and 20% silicates."

The Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) and the Crown Minerals Act 1991 (CMA) both came into force on 1 October 1991. The purpose behind RMA was to integrate the existing laws dealing with town and country planning, land subdivision, water and soil, minerals and energy resources, coastal management, air pollution and noise control into one omnibus Act. Originally, there was a section in RMA dealing with minerals. However, this section was taken out of RMA and a companion piece of legislation - namely CMA - was passed with RMA.

Dust surveys were conducted at six underground coal mines to determine if deep-cutting practices expose face workers to higher levels of respirable dust. The surveyed mines were able to successfully mine deep cuts without significantly increasing the dust exposures of face workers. For exhausting face ventilation, field data indicate that scrubber airflow is the most important factor for controlling dust. Data collected for this study indicate that 20-mesh screens should be cleaned for every 40 ft of advance because 22% of the deep cuts surveyed for this study experienced a 20% to 35% decrease in scrubber airflow over the course of the cut. For blowing face ventilation, field data and past research indicate that dust control is aided by maintaining a proper curtain-to-scrubber airflow ratio of 1.0 (measured before scrubber activation) as well as a curtain setback distance that allows the miner operator to stand at the mouth of the curtain for the entire cut. Dust levels on the bolting faces did not appear to be affected by the longer cycles associated with deep-cut mining when good ventilation practices were used.

Despite the assertion above, this paper is not about to provide delegates with the answer to whom they ought to consult or identify the expectations that Maori might have in regard to the consultation process. It would be a very brave person indeed who would venture an opinion on such a sensitive subject. There are no short cuts to finding out what expectations Maori might have on any given situation. Nothing can be taken for granted. What this paper will attempt to do however is provide practical insights into what might be on the minds of Maori interests as they deal with the issues associated with mineral resources, particularly those under Treaty of Waitangi Claim. The Treaty of Waitangi has a significant bearing on the current debate between Maori and the Crown regarding ownership of mineral resources in New Zealand. The Waitangi Tribunal is currently hearing a case presented by a number of Iwi over the ownership of oil and gas resources in Taranaki and Hawkes Bay. Others will follow. The Crown and Maori have never been able to settle differences over ownership rights without resorting to legal action and it looks like this scenario is about to be repeated in regards to minerals. The Crown has a duty to actively protect the Maori interest. This is a fundamental expectation in the relationship between Maori and the Crown. In the case of minerals, Maori have yet to see the Crown do its duty. The impact on developers has become evident through Maori objections to consent applications as the issues of mineral right remain unresolved.

"INTRODUCTION The Warrior View mine of the Seaboard Coal Corporation is located in Tuscaloosa County on the Warrior River about 14 miles northeast of Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Brookwood bed at this point yields a coal with fair coking qualities, and the product from neighboring mines on this bed has been used for the manufacture of blast furnace coke. The output of the Warrior View mine, however, is used exclusively for domestic and steam-raising purposes.This paper continues the series° of reports on the washability of Alabama coals which are based upon the study of coal preparation in Alabama now being conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama with the cooperation of the different coal mining companies. This paper contains screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests of a representative sample of run-of-mine coal, and flakiness and crushing tests on certain sizes.Published information on the Brookwood bed is very meager. Fieldner6 gives the proximate and ultimate analyses for a number of seam samples taken from representative mines working this bed. Gandrud and Britton7 show sections of this bed taken at Searles, Ala. They also give the specific gravities of the coal, the bone, and the shale partings.Table 1 give the proximate and ultimate analyses for the 3/4 to 3/16 inch size of raw coal. Table 2 gives the sulphur content and the ash fusibility temperatures of the float-and-sink fractions for this same size. The character of the coal is very uniform throughout the range of sizes produced and, as it was not convenient to have these analyses on all sizes, this size was chosen as being representative of the coal. From the information available it is evident that the coal preparation problem is restricted to one of ash reduction.SAMPLING AT THE MINEAt the Warrior View mine the run-of-mine coal is dumped from the mine cars upon a 3-inch grizzly. The oversize is crushed in rolls set at 24 inches and joins the undersize before being elevated to the raw-coal bin ahead of the jig. The sample was caught at the point where elevates discharges into the raw-coal bin, by taking a proportional amount of the coal at 10-minute intervals over the period of a day's run, The total sample amounting to 2.7 tons was shipped to the laboratory at Tuscaloosa for the washability studies."

The reduction of geological risk for planning of high production longwall faces is essential. Geological and geophysical techniques applied at Huntly West Mine before 1989 were unable to reduce the geological risk to an acceptable level. The success of a trial long-hole directional drilling programme at Huntly West Mine (Fowke et al, 1989) has encouraged the Coal Corporation of New Zealand to use the technology long-term, for seam definition. Initial drilling in 1989 completed a total of 3543 metres, with the longest borehole length being 369 metres (limited by number of rods available). A major re-interpretation of seam structure resulted from the drilling, which was able to fill in seam details between surface exploration boreholes. The undulating thick seam conditions at the mine require a refinement of drilling strategies used overseas. Long-hole directional drilling also displays potential for inseam gas drainage. Gas flows of the order of 1000 L/min were initially indicated in individual boreholes. Other gas parameters of the seam have been studied by Beamish et al (1991), and highlight the significance of the natural gas resource in the Huntly Coalfield.   The continued development of drilling technology will be of major benefit sustainable development, particularly in policy.

"The mill at Denison Mines' Elliot Lake Operations started up in 1957, with a capacity of 6,000 tons per day. Over the years various plant modifications expanded th.is to 7 500 tons per day. In 1976, management decided to carry out a major expansion of the milling capacity, and during 1980 the grinding capacity was increased to 15,000 tons per day.The original comminution system consisted of a conventional crushing plant feeding minus S/s-inch material to rod and pebble mills, in closed circuit with mechanical classifiers. The key decision that had to be made was whether the expansion should include conventional or autogenous grinding flow sheets.During 1977, extensive pilot plant studies at Lakefield Research showed that two-stage semi-autogenous grinding, with some steel media in the primary mill and with pebble media in the second stage, produced stable grinding conditions. This type of circuit was selected by Denison for the expansion, and went into production in 1980. Primary millThe flow sheet of the semi-autogenous grinding circuit is shown in Figure 1. The primary grinding mill is a Koppers 28 foot by 10 foot mill, driven by a 4,000 h.p. synchronous motor. It is fed with a minus 8-inch run-of-mine ore, and 4-inch grinding balls are added as supplementary grinding media. There are two Koppers 15.5 foot by 22 foot secondary pebble mills, driven with 1500 h.p. synchronous motors. Each grinding stage operates in closed circuit with cyclones, and the primary cyclone overflow is the feed to the secondary mills. The circulating load in the primary stage can be controlled by adjusting the cyclone apexes."

Stanford University operates the National Research Facility which is located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in Menlo Park, California. In order to improve and allow for enhanced experiments, the current facilities required expansion. A1500 foot long tunnel (20 ft wide by 21 ft high) and a 220 foot long underground cavern (49 ft wide by 32 ft high) were excavated through the Ladera Sandstone formation which is an intermediate geo-material with week rock properties. The overburden between surface and crown of the structures varies from 10 to 80 feet. The underground structures were excavated according to the principles of the NATM (New Austrian Tunnel Method). This paper addresses the challenges that were encountered during the construction phase of the project and how construction issues were resolved mutually by the owner, engineer and contractor. The implementation of geotechnical instrumentation, recorded data and interpretations, soil conditions and behavior encountered during construction are also presented.

Several industrial-scale HydroFloat separators have recently been installed at Mosaic?s South Fort Meade beneficiation plant for the purpose of improving phosphate recovery and throughput capacity. This technology was implemented after numerous laboratory, bench-scale and on-site, pilot-scale test campaigns. The results from this detailed test work provided sufficient justification for the complete retrofit of the existing coarse and ultra-coarse flotation cells. Data indicate that the metallurgical results obtained with the full-scale separators are consistent with that obtained during both the bench- and pilot-scale evaluations. The benefits, theory of operation and commissioning of the equipment are also discussed.
