THE choice of a pumping plant for the drainage of a mine is a matter of such importance that it is obvious that in a short paper it is impossible to go fully into the reasons governing the adoption of any particular type. The author, therefore, proposes to briefly discuss the methods.in vogue, and, as far as possible, to point out the advantages and disadvantages of the numerous systems. The probiem is of extreme importance to the mining engineer, and it appears that in the past sufficient thought has not been given to this branch, as shown by the numerous failures which are encountered.When water is met with in large quantities, the development of the mine depends upon the pumping plant to such a great extent that the most careful consideration should be given before deciding on any particular scheme for drainage. The pumpingplant in a mine should be looked. upon in the light of an insurance policy, and should be treated as such, care being taken that the premium is as low as possibl~, and to ensure this it is necessary that the most efficient plant be secured. Local conditions play such an important part ill the design of a plant that no hard and fast rules can be laid down. "During the fall of 2001 a program was initiated to determine the feasibility of improving the metallurgy in the flotation circuit at the Penhorwood Talc Concentrator located near Timmins, Ontario. Bench scale testwork led Plant staff to believe that opportunities existed to improve the flotation performance. Pilot scale testing was then conducted using two vendors and their respective cylindrical type flotation cells to indicate where these opportunities existed.The results of the test program determined that the replacement of the existing flotation circuit (roughers, scavengers and cleaners) with new flotation cells could be economically viable. Justification was due to a reduction in installed horsepower, maintenance costs and a subsequent increase in recovery and throughput while maintaining product quality. Unforeseen benefits included reagent and air reduction, accurate level control as well as improved working conditions due to the removal of the antiquated equipment and ancillaries.This paper will detail the justification, installation and implementation of the new flotation circuit. A special emphasis will explain the hurdles encountered while trying to install and commission the circuit in an operating Concentrator with minimal interruptions to production.INTRODUCTIONThe Penhorwood mine and Concentrator is 28 yrs old and has gone through many ups and downs with different owners, Johns Manville, Steetley Talc and now Luzenac. It has also been expanded twice, with flotation and grinding capacity being added in recent years.All of the concentration is completed at the mine site while the fine grinding takes place in the Timmins micronizing plant.Luzenac’s Philosophy is to be the world leader in Talc production, technology and sales, having about 70% of the current world High Grade talc market."

In 1953, Dr. N. H. Fisher of the Bureau of Mineral Resources, acting on behalf of the Society of Economic Geologists, which is considering the sponsoring of a uniform system of nomenclature for ore reserves, enquired from the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy whether it had ever considered this subject and particularly whether it had ever set up any standard definitions or specifications with regard to ore reserves.As this had not been done, but was thought to be desirable, the Council of the Institute appointed a Committee consisting of H. H. Dunkin, Associate, Professor of Mining Engineering, University of Melbourne (Convenor), E. A. Rudd, Professor of Economic Geology, University of Adelaide, I. N. Campbell, Chief Geologist of Western Mining Corporation; and the writer to consider and report on this supject.In December 1953, the Committee submitted its first report to the council and this report (reproduced here as an Appendix) was widely circulated among member companies, and engineers, with an invitation to comment on the proposal. A large number of, replies was received and studied.After studying the replies the Committee issued a second report in part as follows:-From these replies we have learned that the suggestions made in the first teport of the Committee are unacceptable to most of those interested, on one or all, of the following grounds;-(a) number of categories,(b) definition of categories;(c) nomenclature.

The economy of Belize continued to show a very slight but still positive growth during 1986. The gross domestic product (GDP) was estimated to have been about $164 million,2 almost the same as those of 1984 and 1985. Foreign investors looked favorably on Belize because it had remained isolated from the sometimes turbulent political and social strife elsewhere in Central America. Reportedly, in late 1986, Guatemala had decided not to pursue its claim to Belizean territory and to give full recognition to that country. Discussions were to be held regarding any matters of mutual concern. New investment possibilities were oriented toward agriculture or manufacturing endeavors. Except for some interest in petroleum exploration, the minerals sector remained limited to the quarrying of construction-related materials.

On-stream determination of xanthate concentrations can be made by photometric measurements at 313 nm.A simple double-beam instrument was developed for this purpose. A mercury lamp is used as the light source and a composite filter of UGll glass and chromate solution is used to isolate the required spectral region. The light beam is split into two components of approximately equal intensity. One component is passed through a reference cell containing water to a photo detector; the other component is passed through the xanthate solution to a second photo detector. The reference signal controls amplifier gain to eliminate effects of lamp intensity changes and the amplified sample signal can then be used to measure xanthate concentration.Plant trials showed that provided a clear solution free of air bubbles was obtained from an on-stream filter, the instrument indicated the xanthate concentration and operated satisfactorily for long periods.

"INTRODUCTION Control of target stream pH is very important in leach mining and treatment of MIW (mining influenced water). On the production side, solution acidity can impact SX (solvent extraction) effectiveness through PLS (pregnant leach solution) and raffinate pH. Many older operations and legacy mining sites generate ARD (acid rock drainage) that is too weak for profitable metal production by conventional means and faces costly wastewater treatment for mitigation and disposal. For wastewater and environmental treatment, neutralization to precipitate and remove metal contaminants to clean the wastewater is the dominant approach. Traditional lime neutralization and precipitation is most often used but results in large amounts of mixed metal sludge requiring costly disposal. Blue Planet Strategies (BPS); which focuses on improved resource utilization targeting electrolytic treatment and waste conversion into resources, has developed a new “reagentless” neutralization process. Electricity is utilized in its proprietary DEMET™ (Dynamic Electrolytic Metal Effluent Treatment) platform capability to controllably raise target stream pH. The method offers a simple, low-cost approach yielding cleaner treatment chemistry. It can result in less sludge generation and enables possibilities to selectively recover contaminants as potentially saleable products for new revenue generation to offset further offset treatment costs. Chalcopyrite concentrate was combusted in oxygen-nitrogen atmospheres, the composition of which ranged from 1-100 per cent oxygen. Factors studied included particle size, experimental temperature and oxygen concentration. The study was assisted by chemical and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and temperature measurements of single particles. Size reduction occurring after melting was found to have a major effect on the overall reaction time. Thus time to attain ignition was largely determined by the original particle size, whereas combustion time was independent of this factor. For particles larger than 40 I'm in air the time to attain ignition predominated. The maximum temperatures measured for single particles were the result of pyrite present in the concentrate. Chalcopyrite did not attain thesame temperatures. Vaporization, either as CU(g) or CuO(g) lImited the temperature. Maximum temperatures measured for single particles of pyrite ranged from 1610°C in 14 per cent oxygen to 2360°C in 100 per cent oxygen (both at 700°C). Measured temperatures were compared with those calculated from a diffusion-based model.

Human-caused global warming has become the environmental cause celebre of the early 21st century. The strong warming alarmist camp currently includes the United Nations, most Western governments, most of the free press, many large corporations (including Enron, before it failed), the major churches, most scientific organisations and a large portion of general public opinion. This phalanx of support notwithstanding there is no scientific consensus as to the danger of human-induced climate change. There is, therefore, a strong conflict between the level of public alarm and its scientific justification. How can this be? In a democracy, the media serve to convey to the public the facts and hypotheses of climate change as provided by individual scientists, governmental and international research agencies, and NGO and other lobby groups. In general, the media have promulgated an alarmist cause for climate change; they have certainly failed to convey the degree of uncertainty that is characteristic of climate science, or a balanced summary of the many essential facts that are relevant to human causation. Climate change is as much a geological as it is a meteorological issue. Natural climate changes, both warmings and coolings, are indeed a societal hazard. We usually deal with geological hazards by providing civil defence authorities and the public with accurate, evidence-based, general information about events like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and floods, and then by adapting to the effects when a damaging event occurs. As for other major natural disasters, the appropriate preparation for extreme climate events is to mitigate and manage the negative effects when they occur, and especially so for dangerous coolings. Attempting instead to æstop climate changeÆ by reducing human carbon dioxide emissions is a costly exercise of utter futility. Rational climate policies must be based on adaptation to dangerous change as and when it occurs, and irrespective of its sign or causation. The issue now is no longer climate change as such, the reality of which will always be with us. Rather, the issues are, first, the failure of the free press to inform the public about the true facts of human-caused climate change and of the dangers posed by natural climate change. And, second, the vested interests held by many of the groups of warming alarmists. These interests include not only the obvious commercial ones, but also the many scientists and science managers who have discounted or remained silent about the huge uncertainties of the human-caused global warming hypothesis because it suited them to do so. Public opinion will soon demand an explanation as to why experienced editors and hardened investigative journalists, worldwide, have melted before the blowtorch of self-induced guilt, political correctness and special interest expediency that marks the sophisms of global warming alarmists.

It is now generally conceded that coal is the product of deposition and transformation of debris of forests and swamps.29 Ample data are available to illustrate the metamorphosis of biochemical substances through biological action; other data show the progressive regional metamorphism existing in coal beds;25 and numerous examples of change effected by intrusion of igneous dikes into coal deposits have been established.23 However, often the relative importance of the biological and the geological factor in determining the character of the various natural coals is a debatable question. Since both biological and geological factors are ever present in nature, the problem, at first glance, would appear to resemble certain probability problems: specifically the simultaneous toss of two coins, with the biological factor as heads and the geological as tails. The probability is 2:I for the combined effect of both factors, as compared to the exclusive effect of either one, if the a priori probability is the same for each factor. This condition can be analyzed by a thermodynamic treatment of data, which may be obtained from a consideration of pertinent biological, chemical, geophysical and geological facts. Synopsis of Biological and Chemical Facts The biosphere is not sterile; i.e., microorganisms are always present. Microor- ganisms have been established in the ocean deep, under the ice of the polar regions, in the sand of the deserts, and in swamps far below the surface. The various biological media may be acid, neutral, or alkaline, and they may or may not be readily accessible to air. Microorganisms are encountered almost everywhere, except where the temperature is not within the range tolerable by microbial life. Of course, with changing conditions, the type of microorganisms will change. All chemical products of life—proteins, fats, carbohydrates, lignins, waxes, resins— may serve as a habitat of microorganisms. In the decomposition of a medium, some microorganisms macerate organic matter mechanically and remove certain constituents for their own nutrition; others decompose a large part of the organic matter but may leave certain constituents undecomposed. Some attack only certain specific ingredients of the organic matter. All of them build up cell substance. The nitrogen content of the medium largely determines the degree of decomposition. Below 1.7 per cent nitrogen, growth of microorganisms and hence decomposition of organic material is retarded; consequently organic material will accumulate.17,32 Such accumulations of organic material may give coal eventually. Coals differ in type and rank. The nature of the original vegetation and the conditions attending the transformation of the accumulated debris determine the type of coal such as bright, splint, cannel, and algal or boghead coals. It is widely accepted that particles stabilise flotation froths and that stable froths result in improved flotation performance. Predicting the effect of particle addition on froth stability is, however, challenging. Dynamic surface tension measurement using maximum bubble pressure presents an attractive technique to investigate the effect of surfactant and particles at the air-water interface. The range of bubble lifetimes that can be studied (typically 0.1 to 60 s) is analogous to variations in air rate in flotation cells, and the corresponding changes in surface tension give an indication to the diffusion and adsorption rates of particles at the interface. In this paper, we use dynamic surface tension measurements to investigate the effect of particles on bubble surfaces at the microscale and link this to bulk froth stability measurements carried out using a froth column. Using the maximum bubble pressure method, the results show that the addition of particles results in lower surface tension, both at the dynamic (i.e. short) bubble lifetimes and towards equilibrium (i.e. 60 s bubble lifetime). This corresponds with the bulk froth stability measurements, where the three-phase system yielded more stable froths than the surfactant only system. Furthermore, increased particle loading at the air-water interface, whether through higher surfactant concentrations or lower air rates (longer bubble lifetimes), gave lower surface tension and higher froth stability. This demonstrates the link between bubble loading and froth stability. It is proposed that the maximum bubble pressure technique can be used to predict froth stability for two- and three-phase systems, enabling the effect of particle loading to be accounted for and quantified. Moreover, the technique has the potential to allow rapid determination of particle and surfactant diffusion at the air-water interface and prediction of the corresponding effect on bulk froth behaviour.

"Unique and difficult minerals processing measurement situations will be described and the application of passive array-based technology for performing these measurements will be illustrated. Examples of these situations include volume flow measurements in froth lines and flotation feed lines with entrained air, slurry lines with magnetite and other magnetic ore, slurry lines with abrasive or corrosive materials, high pressure lines, and slurry and non-slurry lines exhibiting scale buildup. Other situations include measurement of entrained air levels in pipes and in flotation columns. These measurements are achieved through CiDRA’s patented passive sonar array-based technology. This technology performs two independent measurements – flow rate and entrained air amounts. Two hardware implementations of this technology have resulted in a non-intrusive flow and entrained air meter which easily is installed on the outside of the pipe, and a submersible version for entrained air or gas holdup measurements which is used in flotation processes. Recent developments in extending this technology to solve other unique measurement problems such as valve movement confirmation will be covered.INTRODUCTIONThe minerals processing industry faces many unique and challenging process control conditions and environments. In terms of flow measurements, many of these situations are not being properly served by traditional flowmeters such as ultrasonic meters, magmeters, turbine meters, orifice plate meters, vortex flow meters, Coriolis flow meters, and venturi meters. A new class of flowmeters has been developed that solves these unique situations and flow measurement problems. This new class of flowmeter technology utilizes sonar-based processing algorithms and an array of passive sensors to measure not only flow, but also fluid composition. It does so accurately, reliably and without making contact with the fluid. These measurements are performed on practically any type of fluid within virtually any type of pipe.PRINCIPLE OF OPERATIONSonar array-based flowmeters are ideal for tracking and measuring the mean velocities of disturbances traveling in the axial direction of a pipe. These disturbances generally will convect with the flow, propagate in the pipe walls, or propagate in the fluid or slurry. First let us focus on the disturbances that convect with the flow. The disturbances that convect with the flow can be density variations, temperature variations or turbulent eddies. The overwhelming majority of industrial flows will have turbulent eddies convecting with the flow, thus providing an excellent means of measuring the flow rate as described below."

Valuators of mineral properties are faced with a range of valuation methodologies, the most important of which are grouped under the headings of the market approach, the cost approach and the income approach. The way in which value is defined and the detail of the different valuation methodologies is examined here. This paper aims at documenting the variety of valuation procedures and applying each method to a variety of gold projects and comparing the outcomes. Any decision to apply a valuation technique will depend principally on the stage to which the project has been developed. The valuation approach to a greenfield project will be substantially different from that applied to a well-drilled, extensively explored mineral property. Furthermore, a valuation exercise may produce different outcomes for the same gold project depending on which method is applied. In order to investigate the variability in valuation methods and to explore the outcomes of different approaches, a series of five gold projects was analysed. The projects differ in regard to levels of capital application, infrastructural setting, depth below surface, in situ grade, and the stage of development, and were valued using the different methods. The most critical aspect of any valuation is the capacity of the valuer to identify the salient issues and ensure that they are incorporated into the valuation. The danger of simply applying ?black box? solutions to valuation problems without a full understanding of the parameters and the areas of uncertainty is emphasized. The importance of the valuator?s experience, insights into best practice and the ability to recognize and submit to the requirements of compliance within the minerals industry is among the most important characteristics of a valuer.

New York City contains extensive deep deposits of glacial lake varved silt and clay, often overlain by organic soil. An 18 story building was proposed for Manhattan's upper East Side in one such area where bedrock is approximately 200 ft deep. Various pile and caisson alternatives were considered extending through the glacial lake soil to rock, but all proved beyond the project budget. Laboratory testing showed that the glacial lake deposits were preconsolidated. A test pile program using auger cast piles bearing in the glacial lake deposits proved that such piles could safely carry a load of 60 tons per unit. The auger cast pile scheme was estimated to be more economical than a deep pile alternative. A further benefit was that the vibration-free pile installation procedure posed less risk to adjacent structures which had been founded at shallow depth in fill above organic deposits and were stressed and cracked due to prior settlement. The project was designed with the anticipation that the glacial soils beneath the tips of the piles would produce a building settlement of 1 to 2 inches. The building was constructed in 2001 and 2002. It has been completed and is now occupied. Settlement data show that the building is performing as predicted. The auger cast pile scheme founded in a compressible stratum has proven to be successful and is a very unusual foundation alternative.

Filtration of pulps of varying densities is an essential operation in the hydro-metallurgical production of zinc. The use of filters naturally applies only to the "wet" plants, and in these varying types and sizes are in commission. At Risdon, the Moore suction filter is used for the heavier pulps, except in one instance, where a modification of the Butters-Cassell filter is installed.Filter presses are in general use, and of these, one is a washing unit; the plates, and frames are of cast iron or mild steel, except in one case which is a centre feed press having wooden frames.FILTER DESIGNThe problem of filtration presented itself very early in the history of Risdon and the first developments occurred in what was termed the 250 -lb. plant. Here experiments were made with many types of filters, and as this was the pilot plant on which the design of the 10 ton plant (10 tons of zinc per day) was based, quick decisions were necessary.An Oliver type filter was chosen for the heavier pulp or residue, and a Shriver wooden frame filter press for the lighter pulps.To this day, but with a number of variations, filter presses continue to function unopposed in their particular field; however, the Oliver filter was soon superseded because it was found impossible to wash the filter cake efficiently without repulping; consequently its use was abandoned and the Moore filter adopted.Both- these filters have been modified and developed in many ways to meet the requirements of a zinc plant, but they retain their original basic features.

Various circuits were tried at Mount Isa Mines during the period 1959 to 19G3 with the objective of improving the differential flotation of galena and sphalerite. Many benefits and disadvantages of the various circuits were revealed. An analysis' of ore characteristics and their effect on flotation was made -and resullted in the design of a proposed circuit which is currently in the process of installation.INTRODUCTIONSince 1936 when lead-zinc sulphide flotation commenced at Mount Isa, at least three types of ore have been encountered.Each ore has presented problems to flotation metallurgists.The three types of ore are,1. partially oxidized upper level sulphide ore,2. Black Star ore from the lower levels with its carbonaceous fraction, and3. Black Rock ore which is similar to 2, but more free milling.In retrospect a number of the metallurgical successes of the past were short lived. Often flowsheets or 0perating practices were designed to solve a single metallurgical problem associated with the current ore being treated. As the ore changed the problem would vanish and the method originally taken to counter the problem could become unnecessary or deleterious to the treatment of the new ore. The general lesson learnt from-the past-is-that thetreatment of Mount Isa lead-zinc ore involves a number of equally major problems...

The interest in spark plasma sintering has been growing considerable over the past few years. This has been brought about by the unique advantages of the process, which include reduced sintering temperatures and times and the production of materials with unique microstructures and properties. Despite its current reputation as an outstanding process that has solved major problems such as nano-powder consolidation, it has so far been largely limited to the manufacture of simple shapes, due to its inherent geometric configuration. In this paper we present preliminary results on spark plasma "extrusion" that can allow the production of extended geometries via electric-current processing. Preliminary results on the processing and microstructure of spark plasma extruded aluminum are discussed.

"A shallow till sampling program was completed on a 1 km grid over the St . George Batholith in southern New Brunswick. The ""B"" soil horizon was analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ag, Co, Mo, U and Sb and the heavy minerals from the ""C"" soil horizon were analyzed for W, Sn and A u. The results delineated four of five recorded W occurrences, three of four recorded Mo occurrences, all recorded Cu occurrences and one recorded Au occurrence. The results indicate that shallow till sampling in conjunction with bedrock and Quaternary mapping can inexpensively define exploration targets in terrain similar to that underlain by the St. George Batholith.A similar program was carried out in eastern Ontario involving the analysis of four separates from the till, the ""8"" soil horizon, the -50 mesh fraction, the -250 mesh and the heavy mineral fraction of the ""C"" soil horizon and humus. Also sampling was carried out near known gold occurrences at closer spacings. Regionally, anomalous results from all sample media clearly defined a large auriferous shear zone and associated splays. Over one known showing all media clearly defined the showing and a secondary zone. On the regional scale the heavy mineral fraction gave the best anomaly definition and contrast, but the -250 mesh fraction was found to be the most cost effective for defining exploration targets. For detailed surveys, humus was found to be cost-effective."
