THE furnace described in this paper was installed and has been used by the writer for the melting of rich gold-bearing material, and has given complete satisfaction. It may, therefore, prove of interest to other metallurgists who are faced with a similarproblem. A furnace of this type should be most suitable for the reduction of "cyanide preeipitate," "charcoal ash," "anode sludge," &c. formerly the melting was done in fire-clay crucibles, using coke or crude oil as fuel, but this method is costly, slow, and unsatisfactory. A small water-jacketed blastfurnace was also tried on this material after briquetting it, but was discarded in favour of the electric furnace. The furnace may be described as a simple form of the Heroult resistance furnace, with an adjustable upper electrode and a fixed bottom electrode. This is in accordanee with Stansfield's classification of electric furnaces. The heating is mostly due to the resistance offered the current by the molten slag. The melting chamber consists of a steel drum 14 in. in diameter and 21 in. high, and is lined with silica bricks specially made to fit the shell. The internal diameter is G in. The bricks contain 92 % silica, are made from calcined quartzite bonded with fireclay, and are similar in composition to those used for lining steel converters. They are set in a mixture of finely-ground quartzite and clay, and well dried out. The shell is bolted to a steel plate, which forms the decking of a truck running on rails, so that the furnace can be moved under ahood for carrying off the fumes. A cast-iron slag spout is bolted to the shell below the tapping hole, which is 4 in. from the bottom of the shell. Maintaining ground stability in the gate roads, particularly the tailgate, has always been critical to the success of longwall mining, both in terms of safety and productivity. Several new support technologies have been developed in recent years to replace conventional wood and concrete cribbing for secondary roof support. Since their performance characteristics are unique, the best practices that have been developed with conventional wood cribbing may not be applicable for these alternative support technologies. Therefore, with so many options to consider and the importance of achieving adequate ground control at minimal cost, the trial-and-error approach to longwall gate road support is no longer prudent. This paper discusses a design methodology for standing secondary tailgate supports. This design technique requires in-mine measurements of tailgate support loading and convergence to establish a tailgate ground reaction behavior based on support and strata interaction. The methodology uses the performance characteristics generated in the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health's (NIOSH) Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) to match the stiffness and load characteristics of various supports to the measured ground reaction behavior. It can be used to determine the appropriate application of alternative roof support systems or to design in-mine trials so that a fair and equitable comparison of different support systems can be made. A case study of the methodology at a western Pennsylvania mine site is presented in the paper, including a comparison of four alternative support technologies to the conventional wood and concrete cribbing historically used at this particular mine.

THE consideration of the present value of a mine is of great importance when planning for the operation of a property,, and it is particularly so in the case of mines that have large ore reserves. At various times during the past 15 years, the writer has had occasion to make rather thorough studies of the subject, and has been greatly impressed by certain important points which these studies have brought out, points which, though they may be well known, are often lost track of in the rush to obtain low mining costs and high daily tonnage output. . It is the object of this paper to present briefly, and in a general way, some of these points, and especially those which have to do with the relationship which (1) ore reserves and plant capacity, (2) grade of ore mined, and (3) ore losses in mining, bear to the present value. Present value, sometimes called present worth or actuarial value, means the value today of the future earnings of an enterprise. Great industrial, manu-facturing or railroad enterprises, if properly handled, go on indefinitely and their value is directly dependent on their estimated annual earnings. Mines, or oil properties, on the other hand, have an earning capacity only until the ore or oil is exhausted, and their present value is dependent not only on their annual earnings but also on their life, which is the length of the period over which they can produce at a profit. A mine, or an oil property, is a "wasting asset," while an estab-lished manufacturing business is not, or should not be. In other words, the present value of a mining property. represents a sum of money on which there could be paid from operating profits a determined rate of interest, say 8 per cent., and in addition an amount which, if invested at compound interest as received, would at the end of the life of the mine pay back the present value. In his "Wealth and Income of the American People," Walter Renton Ingalls says: "The fundamental principle of mine valuation is the present worth of an annual dividend accruing during the period of years corresponding to the life of the mine."

"The second prime area within the Interoceanmetal Joint Organization exploration area named H22 was delineated in 2013 with the goal to ensure sufficient nodule reserves for profitable mining operations and processing.The knowledge base for area H22 has been obtained from archive materials. The geological situation can be characterized as follows: the sea bottom is represented by tectonic blocks oriented in a sub-meridional direction. According to swath mapping, the depressions (troughs) are contoured at depths of 4500-4600 m while the tops of horsts occur at 4300-4350 m. Volcanic relief occupies 6% of the H22 area; in the eastern part a multicone volcano was detected. Its area at the base is 153 km2. The maximum height of a cone above the base is 850 m. The crystalline basement composed by tholeiitic basalts of late Oligocene age is covered by about 100 m of sediments. Semi-consolidated to consolidated calcareous nanofossil sediments of the Marquesas formation are deposited on the basement. Higher up in the profile sediments of the Clipperton formation occur. They are represented by unconsolidated siliceous (Radiolaria, Diatom) ooze. Sediments containing calcium carbonate have not been detected. Where opaline silica (or CaCO3 if any) content is below 5%, the sediments belong to zeolitic clays or red pelagic clays. Grain size composition of the seabed and the near-seabed sediments in H22 classifies them into clayey silts."

The Heavy Media Separation plant operated at Lidsdale siding, eight miles from Lithgow, by the N.S.W. Mining Co. is a product of the Western Machinery Company, of D.S.A.This mill, designed to use finely ground magnetite as the heavy medium, was prefabricated in America and shipped to Australia for erection.First operated early in December, 1951 it has worked on a two-shift basis since. Designed for an input rate of 330 tons per hour, this mill is capable of washing 4 in. x /u in. coal down to its inherent ash by removing all heavy material, including high-ash coal.The principle is quite simple. A stream of raw coal is fed into the separatory vessel which contains a liquid medium, the density of which is adjusted to produce the desired split between coal and refuse. In this bath the lightest coal floats, and all material heavier than the specific gravity of the medium sinks, and is removed separately. Such a system is,. ideally suited to Western coal, as there is no definite splitting point between coal and refuse. Inherent ash of the coal fed to the plant ranges from 8 to 25%, the corresponding density range being from 1.28 up to 1.8.Generally speaking, the higher the density the higher the ash content of the coal.The density in the separatory vessel (hereafter called the cone) can be quickly and easily adjusted throughout the above range to any desired value. With the great increasing use of nickel metal hydride batteries recently, the waste of this kind batteries have been paid for close consideration. For the main reason that the waste of the batteries contained precious metals and lanthanide which cost great lose. This paper introduces the pyrometallurgical process of recovering nickel and cobalt from the waste of the nickel metal hydride batteries. Particularly, the waste for the process was from factory during the producing program. The use of designed solvent to divide nickel and cobalt in melted state from the waste is described. Also, the result of the nickel and cobalt and melted gangue that mainly consist of lanthanide oxide are included in details. The aim of the paper is to find out a simple and feasible way to reuse waste from nickel metal hydride batteries.

China has been suffering from the most serious coal and gas outburst accidents. The situation has become worse than ever with the mining of deeper coal seams at higher production rates in a more complex underground mining environment, in order to meet the huge national demand for coal-fuelled power plants. In the year 2007 alone, more than 30 outburst accidents occurred in underground coal mines with a death toll of 258, and in the year 2008, as of May 22, nine outbursts have already occurred in Henan, Hubei and Chongqing, killing 68 workers. At the same time, China also experienced new trends of coal and gas outburst accidents since its coal production boom in the year 2001. These trends are of great importance for government agencies, coal mine owners and operators to take initiative and effective measures to prevent and control the occurrence of coal and gas outbursts in China?s widely spread outburst prone mining areas. This paper presents outburst data of China coal mines since 2001 and describes new trends of outburst occurrence in recent years, which include outbursts coupled with shocks or rock bursts of competent roof, outbursts in mines under development, outbursts in new mines and mines that have never suffered outbursts before, outbursts in mines that are believed to be of low gas content as well as outbursts in more long-wall faces. Based on the observation of outburst occurrence in China in the period from 2001 to 2008 as well as mining and geological conditions, detailed analysis of the possible causes that led to those new trends of outburst accidents is conducted. The analysis helps shed light on possible future remedies and the necessary measures to alleviate or eliminate outburst accidents in underground coal mines. Suggestions are put forward on future studies that could be of interest to national and provincial government agencies regarding strategic policies, proper technical management practice, identification of outburst prone coal seams, online monitoring of impending outbursts as well as prevention and control measures.

WHILE in the employ of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters and the Electrolytic Zinc Oompanies at their South Melbourne Research Station, the writer was detailed to investigate the principles underlying the Parkes Process with a view of determining:1. The Interdependence of the variables:(a) Quantity of zinc required per charge,(b) Temperature of stirring of each zincing,(c) Silver content of the bullion after first zinculg,(d) Silver content of the bullion after second zincing,(e) Silver grade of the crusts produced for retorting, with reference to the method of working the Parkes Process then in operation at Port Pirie.2. The possibility of effecting improvements in the Port Pirie practice of desilverising, especially with respect to:(a) Silver grade of the crusts produced for retorting.(b) Quantity of zinc required per charge.The method of desilverising in practice at Port Pirie was a two-stage zincing.In both zincings the bullion was cooled to its solidification temperature and the silver crusts which separated from the lead were completely removed.The crusts from the first zincing were retorted, and the crusts from the second zincing were returned to the first zincing of the next charge.

Outotec?s direct leaching process is an atmospheric leaching process for sulphidic zinc concentrates. The direct leaching process, based on special leaching reactors developed by Outokumpu, is the most economical way to produce electrolytic zinc. The production scale applications of the process realized so far are in use at Boliden?s Kokkola and Odda zinc plants. A new full-scale application of Outotec?s direct leaching process will be started in 2008 in China. The process is integrated to the existing production plant, replacing part of the old production facilities by modern technology. Besides high zinc extraction the plant expansion and modernization offers also indium recovery, iron precipitation and solution purification processes. The process equipment includes tailor-made reactors designed on the basis of the work and experience of Outotec research center. Strainbursts are common in overstressed brittle rock around deep mine openings. Such failures are characterized by a biaxial state of stress in the plane of the opening boundary. A zone of compressive stresses imposes initial failures near or at the surface of the opening that results in spalling of thin slabs of rock roughly parallel to the free face. While the failure of rock under biaxial loading conditions is increasingly common in deep underground mines, only a few representative laboratory studies have been reported in the literature, without emphasis on rockbursting aspects, and none in the last decade. This paper presents the results of a testing program on a granite rock type. Biaxial testing, conducted on 100 mm cubic samples, was carried out to examine the influence of lateral confinement and loading rate on the rock’s ultimate strength. The paper reports the test results in terms of normalized biaxial failure envelope s1/sc-s2/sc. A discussion of the failure mechanisms observed is presented. Les coups de toits de déformations sont choses communes dans le rock cassant surcontraint en place autour des ouvertures minières profondes. De telles ruptures sont caractérisées par un état de contraintes biaxiales dans le plan de la périphérie de l’ouverture. Une zone de contraintes compressives impose des ruptures initiales à ou près de la surface de l’ouverture, qui produit des relâchements de minces plaques de roc plus ou moins parallel à la surface. Bien que les ruptures de roc sous des conditions biaxiales sont de plus en plus communes dans les mines à grandes profondeurs, il n’y a eu que quelques études représentatives en laboratoire de publiées, sans emphase sur des aspects de coups de terrains, et aucunes publiées depuis la dernière décennie. L’article présente les résultats d’une campagne d’essais appliquée à un type de granit. La campagne d’essais biaxiaux, sur des échantillons cubiques de 100 mm, avait pour objectif d’examiner l’influence du confinement latéral et le taux de chargement sur la résistance ultime du roc. Cet article fait part des résultats en terme de l’enveloppe de rupture biaxiale normalisée s1/sc-s2/sc. Une discussion sur les mécanismes de ruptures observés est présentée. Obwohl Felsbrüche unter zweiachsiger Beanspruchung immer mehr häufig in tiefen Minen beobachtet sind, hat man über nur einige repräsentative Laborversuche in der Literatur berichtet. Diese Studien diskutieren das Thema ohne Betonung auf Felsbrüchen, und keine sind in den letzten zehn Jahren erschienen. Die vorliegene Arbeit gibt die Ergebnisse eines Testprogramms auf einem Typ von Granitfels. Durch zweiachsige Prüfungen von kubischen Proben mit Seitenlangen von 100 mm sollte man den Einfluss von seitlicher Ermittlung und der Beanspruchungsrate auf die Bruchfestigkeit des Felsen studieren. Man findet auch die Prüfergebnisse in bezug auf das normalisierte, zweiachsige Bruchkriterium s1/sc-s2/sc. Die beobachteten Bruchmechanismen sind auch diskutiert.

Gas phase hydrocarbons produced from underground reservoirs will, in many instances, have liquid phase material associated with them, the presence of which can affect the flowing characteristics of the well. Liquids can come from condensation of hydrocarbon gas (condensate) or from interstitial water in the reservoir matrix. In either case, the higher density liquid phase, being essentially discontinuous, must be transported to the surface by the gas. In the event the gas phase does not provide sufficient transport energy to lift the liquids out of the well, the liquids will accumulate in the wellbore. The accumulation of the liquid will impose an additional back pressure on the formation that can significantly affect the production capacity of the well. In low pressure wells the liquid may completely kill the well; and in the higher pressure wells there can occur a variable degree of slugging or churning of the liquids, which can affect calculations used in routine well tests. Specifically, the calculated bottom-hole pressures used in multirate backpressure tests will be erroneous if the well is not removing liquids on a continuous basis, and gas:liquid ratios observed during such a test may not be correct. Several authors1,3,8,14 have suggested methods to determine if the flow rate of a well is sufficient to remove liquid phase material. Vitter14 and Duggan' proposed that wellhead velocities observed in the field would be adequate for keeping wells unloaded. Jones8 and Dukler3 presented analytical treatments resulting in equations for calculating, from physical properties, the minimum necessary flow rate. An analysis of these studies indicates the existence of two proposed physical models for the removal of gas well liquids: (1) liquid film movement along the walls of the pipe and (2) liquid droplets entrained in the high velocity gas core. Although there probably is a continuous exchange of liquid between the gas core and the film, they will be treated separately for the purposes of this study. The development and comparison of these separate models with experimental data will permit the determination of which, if either, is the controlling mechanism for the removal of liquids from gas wells. The Continuous Film Model Liquid phase accumulation on the walls of a conduit during two-phase gas/liquid flow is inevitable due to the impingement of entrained liquid drops and the condensation of vapors. The movement of the liquid on the wall is therefore of interest in the analysis of liquid removal from gas wells. If the annular liquid film must be moved upward along the walls in order to keep a gas well from loading up, then the minimum gas flow rate necessary to accomplish this is of primary interest. The analysis technique used follows Dukler2 and Hewitt5 and involves describing the profile of the velocity of a liquid film moving upward on the inside of a tube. The minimum rate of gas flow required to move the film upward is then calculated.

The land mass of the Asia and Pacific region comprises 11 million square miles or about 15% of the total Earth's land area. The bulk of the region is contained on the Asian continental land mass. Australia, the world's largest island or the world's smallest continent, alone is almost as large as the continental United States. The islands of New Zealand, New Guinea, Borneo, Sumatra, and Honshu are among the largest in the world. Collectively, they constitute a land area of 1.1 million square miles or an area about one-fourth the size of the United States. The countries in the Asia and Pacific region represent some of the most vibrant economies in the world. Japan is undisputed as one of the world's leaders in manufacturing and commerce. Hong Kong and Singapore are significant both as entrepôt and banking centers. The economies of Australia, the Republic of Korea, and Taiwan compare favorably to the level of the industrialized countries in western Europe. Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand have maintained strong economic growth during the past two decades. All these countries in the Asia and Pacific region collectively constitute a significant bloc as to raw materials production and consumption, as to manufacturing, and as to world trade.

Longevity of structural units, as compared to the planned useful life of a facility, always is a design consideration. Typical concerns include slow decay due to environmental factors, and changes in constitutive relationships governing the performance of the material involved. With respect to foundations, the usual items of interest are corrosion of steel and concrete, and time dependent behavior of the soil/structure system. For piles, as with other foundations, deterioration is precluded, mitigated or otherwise accounted for by assessing properly the ambient situation (sulphates, pH, stray currents, resistivity) and providing safeguards, such as resistant construction products, oversizing, coatings, and/or cathodic protection. On the other hand, long term performance of the pile foundations, as affected by time dependent characteristics of the supporting soil or rock, can be predicted and controlled only with a synergetic coupling of analyses and field tests. The history of a project for which this approach was followed forms the basis for this paper.

Mill crushing drive systems are essential to cement producers. With the increased emphasis on operating efficiency, it is vital that these systems be dependable and reliable. No one needs the costs or headaches associated with unscheduled downtime or inefficient machinery operation. A reliable drive system starts with the proper selection of the ring, or girth, gear and continues through proper maintenance. Ideally, selecting the right girth gear brings together the gear manufacturer, the system designer and the end user. The gear manufacturer must know the details of the application, the demands that will be placed on the gear and the nature of the equipment to be driven. Similarly, the user and the system designer must be familiar with the variables that affect gear drive performance and service. For example, an application that places a torque load on the drive in excess of its rated capacity will result in gear tooth distress and, in severe cases, breakage.

Residents of Maxwell Hill, a suburb of Beckley, West Virginia, reported from January until March of 1988 a series of earth tremors. The tremors rattled dishes, and the noises associated with tremors were sometimes loud enough to wake people at night. These events were puzzling because Beckley is in an area of low seismic activity. Maxwell Hill is located above abandoned coal mines, though no direct subsidence damage to surface structures has been documented. A research program was initiated to determine whether subsurface ground movements associated with the abandoned mines could be responsible for the seismic activity experienced at the surface. A hypothesis is proposed which states that seismic disturbances can be caused by abandoned mine failure when two conditions are met. First, some instability must exist at the mine level. The most likely cause of instability is the failure of pillars of coal that were left for support at the time of mining. Second, subsurface movements can result in significant seismic activity only when the rock above the mine contains at least one very strong and brittle layer that is prone to fail violently through rupture or fault slip movement. Analysis of the data indicates that both hypothesized conditions for mine-related seismicity appear to have been satisfied in the case of Maxwell Hill. It has therefore been concluded that the earth tremors experienced by Maxwell Hill residents probably are related to the abandoned mines. Analysis of the potential magnitude of these events indicates that they are unlikely to cause significant surface danlage. The probability that future events will disturb the residence of Maxwell Hill should be quite low based on the identified mechanism.

Abstract: From the viewpoint of interaction mechanics of solid and gas, a coupled mathematical model is presented for coal/rock mass deformation and gas leak flow in parallel deformable coal seams. Numerical simulations for the prediction of the safety range of mining of protection layer are performed with experimental data from a mine with potential danger of coal/gas outbursts. Analyses show that the numerical simulation results are consistent with the measured data on the spot. Therefore, the coupled model shows a positive future for applications in a wide range. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG:Von der Veranschaulichung der Abhängigkeit Mechaniker für Körper und Gas, wird ein verbundenes mathematisches Modell für festen coal/rock Deformation und Gasleckstelle Fluß in parallele deformable Kohlenähte dargestellt. Numerische Simulationen für die Vorhersage der Sicherheit Strecke, die Schutzschichtbergbau verwendet, werden mit experimentellen Daten von einer Grube mit möglicher Gefahr der coal/gas Ausbrüche durchgeführt. Analysen zeigen, daß die numerischen Simulation Resultate mit den gemessenen Daten bezüglich des Punktes gleichbleibend sind. Folglich zeigt das verbundene Modell eine positive Zukunft für Anwendungen in einer breiten Strecke. RÉSUMÉ: Du point de vue de la mécanique d'interaction pour le solide et le gaz, un modèle mathématique couplé est présenté pour l'écoulement plein de déformation de coal/rock et de fuite de gaz dans les filons houillers deformable parallèles. Des simulations numériques pour la prévision de la gamme de sûreté employant l'exploitation de couche de protection sont effectuées avec des données expérimentales d'une mine avec le danger potentiel des accès de coal/gas. Les analyses prouvent que les résultats numériques de simulation sont conformés aux données mesurées sur place. Par conséquent, le modèle couplé montre un futur positif pour des applications dans un éventail.

As we enter the new millennium, the South African mining industry has to ensure that it becomes more competitive if it is to survive in the ever more demanding global environment. Traditionally, mechanization in narrow stopes has been limited to the use of scraper winches, and numerous mechanization attempts have been restricted to pilot projects operated on an extremely limited scale (with varying degrees of success). The benefits of hydropower are well documented, and Northam Platinum has shown these benefits to be achievable on a mine-wide basis. However, the equipment originally developed for hydropower systems has followed the traditional labour-intensive approach commonly used in deep level narrow stoping operations. The problems experienced with the hydropower system are discussed and the rationale for developing alternate technologies is explored. The hydropower system has shown to be a versatile powering medium which can be harnessed for a diversity of uses. It (hydropower) enables the mining engineer to change traditional paradigms and to design an entirely new approach for optimizing the mining operation based on explosive techniques. The system developed for Northam consists of the following: ?Purpose-built stope drill rig operated off the hydropower system with special features to ensure accurate drilling patterns throughout the length of the blast hole ?Purpose-built high rate cleaning system for rapid transfer of fractured ore to the stope orepass ?Redesigned stope layout to facilitate in-stope water control and to recover fines from the run-off water ?Purpose-built drill rig for rapid establishment of reef raises and advanced strike gullies ?Purpose-built drill rig for flat end development. On both types of development end rig, emphasis is placed on ensuring accurate drilling patterns throughout the length of the hole to maximize linear advance per blast. The paper discusses the implementation of the Northam system on a large scale as well as current initiatives to further improve on the efficiencies of mining operations. It concludes by emphasizing that mechanized hydropowered stope technologies are in their infancy and thus offer unlimited scope in progressing beyond today?s paradigms to present as yet unthought of solutions for optimizing deep level ore extraction.

Before hostilities began, only about two-thirds of our, require vents came from domestic sources; now they must supply almost all the magnesia we need. A further burden is placed upon our own supply by the fact that more and more magnesia is being required, not alone to pace the war tempo of general industrial activity, but also to replace chrome ore in refractories and to make magnesium metal. The domestic magnesite and brucite industry is equipping itself to satisfy much of this greater demand for magnesia, but the remainder must be obtained elsewhere. The principal sources of magnesia are magnesite, brucite, dolomite or high-magnesium limestone, natural brines, sea water, salt-works bitterns, magnesium silicates, and magnesium salts. Although dolomite is tae subject of this paper, it should be considered in perspective with all these highly competitive sources of magnesia.
