The production of sulphuric acid at Port Pirie by the contact process began in March 1924 with the commissioning of the Electrolytic Zinc Co.'s roasting and acid plant. This plant, operated by B.H.A.S. Pty. Ltd. on behalf of the E.Z. Co., continued to produce sulphuric acid from the gases evolved when roasting Broken Hill zinc concentrate in mechanically rabbled furnaces until September 1954, when the plant was closed down.In this peri9d of approximately 30 years some 600,000 mono tons of 98·5 per cent sulphuric acid was produced, most of which was used for fertilizer production at Wallaroo and Port Adelaide. During World War II 14,400 mono tons of the above was produced in the form of 20 per cent Oleum and railed to the Salisbury Munitions Factory for use in the production of nitro-glycerine, gun-cotton and T.N.T.In the early post-war period various ways of converting at least some of the sulphur in the gases' discharged to atmosphere from the lead sintering plant were considered until, in 1949, it was decided to erect a modern contact acid plant. Much work remained to be done on the roasting plant to produce a gas of suitable grade for the contact process and also on the design of a purification section suitable for the treatment of D.L. gases.The acid section itself, however, was largely of conventional design and it was therefore decided that this would be erected first. To it was then attached a sulphur-burning section to allow it to operate as a "hot gas" brimstone acid plant until the roasting and gas purification plants had been designed and erected. In this way the urgent need for sulphuric acid in the fertilizer industry would be relieved, to some extent at least, as soon as, possible.

ABSTRACT: The safe design of excavations created in a fractured rock mass is of paramount importance in rock engineering. Depending on the nature of the stress regime acting on an excavation, and the associated deformational behaviour of the rock mass surrounding the excavation, a number of potential failure mechanisms exist. These involve a combination of shear failure on existing joints, extension of critically oriented joints and propagation of new fractures through previously intact rock. Conventional numerical codes usually adopt either a continuum or discontinuum approach; this often results in significant over simplification and kinematic limitations particularly when modelling complex rock mass behaviour in the close vicinity of excavations. This paper describes the results from several case examples using a combined finite element-discrete element code, ELFEN that incorporates a crack propagation mode. Through the use of selected rock engineering examples, the authors demonstrate the potential of the code in the realistic simulation of complex rock failure both in underground and surface excavation applications. RÉSUMÉ: La conception sûre des excavations créées dans une masse de roche fracturée est d'importance primordiale dans la géotechnique. Selon la nature du régime d'effort autour d’une excavation, et le déformation associé de la masse de roche autour de l'excavation, il exsite un certain nombre de mécanismes potentiels d'échec. Ceux-ci comportent une combinaison d'échec de cisaillement sur les joints existants, la prolongation des joints d’orientation critique et la propagation de nouvelles ruptures dans la roche précédemment intacte. Les codes numériques conventionnels adoptent habituellement l’approche, soit d’un continuum, soit de discontinuum; ceci a souvent comme conséquence une sursimplification significative et les limitations cinématiques en particulier en modelant le comportement complexe de la masse de roche très proche des excavations. Cet article décrit les résultats de plusieurs exemples de cas en utilisant un code qui s’agit d’une combination d’élément discret et d'élément fini, ELFEN qui incorpore un mode de propagation de fissure. Par l'utilisation des exemples choisis géotechniques, les auteurs démontrent le potentiel du code dans la simulation réaliste de l'échec complexe de roche pour les applications aux excavations soit au fond soit à l’extérieure. The augered cast-in-place pile system came into use in the late 1940's where various techniques were tried using pressure grouting methods. In the early development stages some piles were installed using the preplaced aggregate concrete system. As development continued it became more apparent that placement of coarse aggregate was more costly than making a pile out of a cement and sand mixture only. Various techniques were tried consisting of pumping structural grout into an open hole through a pipe left in the bottom of the hole, drilling or driving a pipe in close proximity to the tip elevation of the auger or in working a pipe down adjacent to the auger fluting. For these techniques the pipe was usually withdrawn after grout appeared at the surface. In 1951 a patent was applied for by Raymond Patterson describing the above techniques along with a technique for placement of grout using a hollow stem auger and a removable plug or lead bit at the tip of the auger. The plug or lead bit was removed by grout pressure and this would be an expendable item for each pile placed. The patent was granted in 1956 and patent rights were assigned to Intrusion-Prepakt, Inc. Shortly thereafter other contractors were granted licenses to utilize the system. Patent coverage expired in 1973 and this method now is in the public domain. Today the method is in wide use throughout the world and is particularly well accepted in Japan and England.

Grouting is a frequently utilized remedy in the planning and implementation of ground improvement and tunnel rehabilitation practice. The state-of-art grouting application used for Chicago’s McCook Reservoir project offers a unique alternative to the tunneling industry for pre-excavation grouting as well as tunnel rehabilitation, rescue and post-excavation ground improvements. The McCook Reservoir project included a computerized grouting control and data collection system for a precise and highly effective groundwater cutoff in fractured dolomites. By using balanced and stabilized grout mixes, the effective permeability of the rock mass was reduced over two orders of magnitude to less than 0.1 Lugeon by installing a double line grout curtain. The stable grout mix designs allowed high pressure and effective grouting at depths up to 125 m (410 ft).

A number of people have expressed concern, understandably, that if mining operations take place in the Coromandel, the flows of mineralised ground water which exist will be intercepted. This water in many cases contains toxic metals including mercury, arsenic and lead and it is thought that if this water is allowed to enter streams or the waters of the Hauraki Gulf, it could endanger natural marine life and possibly established fisheries. This paper seeks to explain in simple terms the geology and the process of deposition of the various mineral deposits in the ground, the chemistry of the reactions between these minerals and the rain water falling on the ground, the hydrology and behaviour of this mineralised groundwater as it moves through the ground until it eventually enters the sea.

It is indeed a rarity for a non-engineer, let alone a lawyer, to even be considered for a mining-related award, especially where that award is for significant contributions to technical progress in the mining and exploration sectors. So, when I was notified that I had received this award, I struggled for a topic that would meld the legal world that I operate in with the engineering driven world of exploration and extraction. The most exciting part of my job has always been the opportunity to absorb the technical details of the cases I work on and, in effect, translate them for a lay audience. Too often, I have found, lawyers, judges, legislators and yes, even regulators who lack a technical background simply give up trying to understand the details of the very conditions or processes that they are trying to describe and simply repeat phrases told to them by their client or by a retained expert.

This paper presents observations on the installation of drilled shafts from two construction projects and an academic study with experimental and analytical parts. The construction projects involved the use of pressurized drilling methods. The experimental part of the academic study involved the use of the auger drilling method. The analytical part of the academic study investigated the effect of drilling methods on the soil-structure interaction and the behavior of drilled shafts under lateral loads. The concept of ?free-length? is introduced for the lateral load design of pressure-drilled shafts that are thought to be fully embedded within a soil media. The academic part of the study presented herein was conducted in Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.

Lidding over or tunneling existing transportation infrastructure is currently under review in several U.S. cities. The main reasons for this are the use of the created space for urban development, the reduction of noise and exhaust fumes for the residents, and, thus, a significant increase in the quality of life. The main aspects to be considered during the planning process are (1) total investment and operational costs, (2) impact of construction works on current traffic, (3) safety and fire protection, and (4) socio-environmental issues. The paper presents some basic planning principles, and experiences of recent urban highway coverages are shared.

Xstrata Copper at Mount Isa in Australia has operated one copper Isasmelt furnace and four P-S converters. The phenomena of foaming occur in above 10% of converter operations. A thermodynamic model of copper P-S converter and a viscosity model of converter slag have been developed to simulate the slag blow and copper blow. The model predicts the chemistry and viscosity of copper skims during copper blow. The effects of oxygen potential, charge of dirty materials, slag carry-over, under-blowing, over-blowing, and temperature on the foaming and viscosity of copper skims have been discussed. Some improvements of the industrial operations have been presented.

The literature dealing with the electrical conductivity of solid dielectrics, including all its aspects and its relationships to other physical properties of these materials, is extensive and scattered in many books, phamphlets, and periodicals. It is believed that most of the important contributions to this field up to October 1943 have been listed and abstracted in this circular. Also included are some general references on static electricity. Methods of removing static charges are described; methods of and conditions for measurements of resistivity are discussed; equations for the calculation of resistivity are given; and methods of resistance measurements in Situ are reviewed. Data on the variations of resistivity with changing conditions as well as explanations for them have been collected, and three tables showing the resistivity of various dielectrics at different humidities are included. The appendix contains a short development of the mathematical formulation of the charging and discharging currents due to interfacial polarisation. INTRODUCTION Methods for Removing Static Electricity Of the various means employed for preventing or removing accumulations of static electricity in industrial processes, grounding is the most common and most generally effective. It is a precaution readily applied to stationary machines anti may often be utilized to good advantage to rid persons and portable equipment of an acquired charge. There are many situations, however, in which direct low-resistance grounding cannot be used, either because the charged bodies are insulators or are inaccessible, or because contact to a ground lead might give rise to a hazardous spark. If the charged body is a conductor, contact made to a neighboring conductor, even though the latter be insulated from ground and of relatively small capacitance, may also result in the occurrence of an incendive spark. In such instances, static electricity can sometimes be removed most satisfactorily by means of strong atmospheric ionization produced by radioactive material, X-rays, ultraviolet light, or A. Grade control and short-term planning are usually based on the samples obtained from blastholes. These samples may carry a large sampling and sample preparation error. At El Tesoro copper mine in northern Chile, an advance drilling grid is used for short-term planning and grade control. These drill holes are sampled well in advance, and a short-term model that incorporates several variables and sophisticated estimation methods can be prepared for decisionmaking. An additional advantage of the advance drilling samples is that reverse circulation can be used instead of conventional down-the-hole equipment, and a very careful sampling and sample preparation process can be implemented, reducing the total sampling error. Advance drilling can be performed on a wider grid than blasthole drilling, hence the decision about the grid requires assessing the economic benefit of different sampling grids. Furthermore, this process allows the cost of poor sampling and the effect of different estimation procedures to be quantified. We demonstrate the optimization of the drilling grid for short-term planning and grade control at El Tesoro mine by means of the economic evaluation of the performance of different drilling grids, with different drilling techniques (which differ in the sampling error). The methodology is based on creating dense (exhaustive) geostatistical simulations of the grade distribution over a volume defined for a production period in respect of the geological model, and assuming each simulation as the true grade distribution. Then, samples are obtained from the exhaustive simulations at a spacing similar to the advance grid to be evaluated, and a sampling error is added. The short-term estimation procedures used on the mine are applied to determine the destination of each block and the profit obtained. This profit can be compared with the maximum profit (unachievable) and with the profit under different sampling errors and grids. The results show that the current 8 x 8 m drilling grid is appropriate and by reducing the sampling error, misclassification is also reduced, leading to an increase in profit of about US$ 5 million in 4 years.

Nodular-graphite cast iron (GGG) is a material similar to steel, and one which exhibits excellent properties, in particular for components exposed to pressure. GGG cast iron has been used in many cases when sinking mine shafts with conventional tubbing. With linings made of cast iron tubbings (the backfill concrete is not integrated into the calculations, and merely serves as bedding) the properties of the cast iron can be made full use of, provided the tubbing is made to the appropriate cross-section. Calculations have shown that better static values can be arrived at when using cross-sections other than those of tubbings made to conventional German standard. The cross-sectional design of the new types of shaft lining made from GGG is to be developed on these lines irrespective of the cast iron structure being only stressed component or its restistance function being combined with the one of concrete. GGG 50 is used for the first time to make the reinforcing inner liner of a main shaft currently sunk in Germany. The physical properties of nodular-graphite cast iron, strength and deformability, suggest that, in the future, its application will not be restricted to shaft support but also in tunneling. New moulding techniques with better three-dimensional modelling resulted in new tubbing designs as installed e.g. for the Hannover underground at present. Shield-driven tunnels have to withstand earth and water pressure, apart from axial machine loads. In this field time is money as well. Therefore easy handling and quick installation are necessary for successful, use. Last but not least, safety is of first-order importance for work in shaft sinking and tunneling. Cast iron lining systems, accordingly, are adequate systems, in particular for excavations underneath water for transport systems and for goods and passengers.

Economic features of the zirconium industry, together with general information regarding the metal and its compounds, are discussed in a separate paper, to which this paper is a supplement. In addition to giving a brief discussion of the four or five de- posits that so far have proved to be commercial sources of the element, this circular summarizes available data (including some hitherto unpub lished material from the files of the Bureau of Mines) upon other occur- rences, including many of scientific interest only, of the two commercial. minerals, zircon and baddeleyite, and also data upon some of the minor minerals, such as eudyalite and cyrtolite, which have attracted addition- al interest in recent years because they are frequently richer in hafnium than the more common zirconium minerals.

A liquid metal flow generated by a magnetic field whose traveling direction is periodically reversed, the Reversed Traveling Magnetic Field (R-TMF) is studied. The modulation frequency ranges from 0 to 6 Hz. Ultrasonic Doppler velocimetry probes the generated fluid flow. Depending on the modulation frequency, a number of characteristic flow features are exhibited. A transition frequency (approximately 4 Hz) exists, above which the flow is no longer sensitive to the force modulation. Below this transition point, the amplitude of the velocity oscillation increases, and then below fm = 0.05 Hz, it saturates around a value close to that observed without any modulation. A theoretical model to obtain an analytical solution of electromagnetic force and to predict flow motion is developed, which is fairly in agreement with the experiments.

One would anticipate that after 40 years in the mineral industry it would be simple to project the trends at least 5 or 10 years into the future. However the last 20 years, 1950-1970, have been so different in the mineral industry from the years 1930-1950 that I suggest only 20 years or so are relevant to any forward projection.Those, of us that have been about during the last 40 years find it hard to relate the two periods.The first with the depression, low base metal prices, attempts to revive the gold industry, very little export of minerals, and finally World War II and the recovery period.The second, a period of unimagined discoveries and the reappraisal of a wide variety of minerals and metals-iron, coal, bauxite, beach sands, manganese, oil and gas, and nickel, to name but a few.The second period started early in the 1950s and was triggered off by the search for oil in Australia.Rough Range No. 1 was an important milestone in our history because it initiated a series of speculations and the re-examination of much of our thinking about our mineral resources. It lead to the discovery of bauxite and the start of a flourishing aluminium industry.The realization of the extent of the iron ore resources was another, major step and the influx of overseas capital and competence started the large wave of development made effective by the Japanese markets.The momentum of the late 1950s has carried us to where we are today and will undoubtedly carry us further forward in the next few years.All this development in the mineral industry has come at a time when our pastoral industries have reached a difficult period. ( The central part of the Gippsland Basin is surrounded by existing major Petroleum accumulations and although six exploration wells have been drilled in the area, none are significant petroleum discoveries. Post drilling analyses indicate that the wells were drilled off structure due to the presence of high-velocity Miocene channels. These channels contain carbonates of significantly higher interval velocity than the surrounding sediments. Problems with seismic interpretation were thus encountered in the development of prospects in the central part of the Gippsland Basin as part of a BMR prospectivity study. The seismic interpretation problems associated with the Miocene channels are two-way time pull-ups at the underlying top of Latrobe Group and deeper levels on the seismic sections. Interpreted seismic sections passing through some of the exploration wells and the Miocene channels are presented to illustrate the configurations of these channels and the pullup effect associated with them. Two different methods of depth conversion were applied, one for the area below the high velocity channels and the other for the area away from the channel. The application of these two methods of depth conversion were found to be reasonably successful in correcting for the pull-ups caused by the high velocity Miocene channels. Mapping of the events near the top of Latrobe Group and near Base Lower L balmei seismic horizons has led to the identification of several potential structural closures. Further exploration efforts are necessary in this area to test these closures.

En este sentido, el uso de geosintéticos revolucionó el diseño de los relaves y sistema productivos y permitió un mejor manejo ambiental de los relaves. Asimismo, la utilización de gaviones como paramento externo en el sistema suelo armado, otorga mayor rigidez al mismo en el caso de paredes, taludes más verticales, drenaje y protección contra la erosión. En consecuencia, el uso de gaviones y geomallas es aplicable para la construcción de depósitos de relave y estabilización de depósitos inactivos.

Lest you think that Hollis Dole is not interested in this symposium, let me just say that fie is flying back from Australia just to be here. He is heading up a United States delegation in Australia meeting on resource problems in the Pacific. And I believe he will be here about noon.

"AbstractIn order to raise the enormous amounts of capital which will be essential for the development of Canada's mineral and petroleum resources, this country's resource industry must be permitted to earn an acceptable rate of return. The existing tax regime, with its high rates, complexities and misdirected incentives, presents a serious obstacle to our resource industries in their development of Canada's immense , but increasingly lean, resources. Government tax and other policies are not the only cause of the crisis now facing the resource sector in Canada, but a reformed tax system, with stable and reasonable tax burdens, is required if Canada's resources of minerals, oil and natural gas are to continue to contribute in the future, as in the past, to our national well-being.An independent task force, organized under the auspices of the Canada West Foundation, has recently completed a wide -ranging report: on the future development of Canada's mineral, oil and gas resources. This five-volume report, completed after almost two years of research and study, concludes that Canada •is facing a major crisis •in the development of our resources, It states that unless corrective action is taken now, mineral production and exports could decline drastically after 1985, at the same time that Canada would face massive bills for imported oil because of inadequate and declining production.The task force, chaired by the author of this article, has put forward recommendations for a fundamental shift in both federal and provincial policies in order that Canada's mineral reserves can be developed in the national interest.
