[The Bureau of Mines selected Anahuac for a petroleum-engineering study because it is one of the notable fields of the Gulf Coast region. It is outstanding because the producing formation is very thick; ever modern technique of drilling' and development has been applied; complete records of all operations,, including detailed subsurface information have been kept; the field has ,been developed systematically; and every effort has been made to utilize the reservoir energy efficiently. Data and information pertaining to the development anal operation were collected, compiled, and studied by the writers as if the field were under single ownership. The chief aim of the study was to increase the accuracy of the existing methods of estimating reserves by applying all the data collected during the modern development of an oil field, These scientific aids include coring; electric logging; micropaleontology determinations of porosity, permeability of oil-bearing sands, and their connate water content; subsurface sampling of the reservoir oil; and depth-pressure measurements. Because the reservoir structure in the Anahuac field is extremely complex, special attention was given to methods of calculating the reservoir volume.]

As part of an effort to decrease U.S. dependence on imports of critical and strategic metals, the Bureau of Mines investigated three leaching methods for extracting the base metals and recovering platinum-group metals (PGM) from matte prepared from Stillwater Complex flotation concentrates. Because of a limited supply of natural material, synthetic matte of composition similar to matte prepared from natural concentrates was used to devise the extraction sequences. The validity of the sequences was verified with matte prepared from Stillwater concentrates. In two-stage matte leaching, first-stage H2S04 leaching extracted 99 pct of the nickel and iron from the matte but negligible amounts of copper and PGM. Second-stage oxidative leaching with Fe2(S04)3 or FeC13 solubilized more than 98 pct of the copper and no precious metals. Sequential leaching, in which acid and oxidizing lixiviants were added sequentially to the matte without an intervening filtration step, extracted 99 pct of the Fe, Ni, and Cu. A roasting-leaching technique, in which the residue from first-stage leaching was roasted between 360° and 500° C before a second leaching with H2S04, solubilized 98 pct of the copper. The three leaching methods yielded high-grade PGM residues containing more than 98 pct of the PGM in the matte.

Así también se revisa el contexto geotécnico, geológico, metalogenia, depósitos magmáticos - hidrometales, tipo Skarn, y vetiformes, estratigrafía y modelo metalogénico.

Gas-liquid contacting in the packed bed is a common operation in metallurgical reactors. Research has shown that, unlike wetting flow, non-wetting liquid flows in the form of discrete droplets or rivulets. Thus, modeling of the liquid phase as a continuum is in contradiction to the observations. Also, for the non-wetting case, continuum models have failed to describe liquid flow path when the liquid source is a point source. The aim of the current work is to put forward a combined Lagrangian-Eulerian approach to model the liquid and gas flow in the packed bed. Liquid is assumed discrete and modeled using a force balance approach. Gas is assumed to be interpenetrating continua and modeled using k-emodel for turbulent flow. Structured packing is assumed and x- ray imaging technique is used to visualize liquid flow lines in the bed. Simulation results for liquid flow path compared with the experiments.

Undisturbed minor sedimentary structures-cross-bedding, ripplemarking, scour-and-fill, slumping-are present in most of the rock types in the Willyama Series of the Broken Hill district and in the orebodies.This indicates that there has not been any significant movement of mineral matter within or into the rocks during or after metamorphism, that the rocks have not flowed during tectonic deformation or during metamorphism, and that the ore is an original sedimentary deposit in its sedimentary position.Sedimentary processes, depositional and mechanical, are indicated to explain the deposition of sedimentary metallic minerals and their concentration into large masses. The Broken Hill orebodies show evidence of these processes.INTRODUCTIONI visited Broken Hill for one week in May, 1958, at the invitation of Mr. Haddon F. King, Director of Consolidated Zinc Pty. Ltd. He asked me to examine the rocks and orebodies in the mines and outcrops at Broken Hill for:1. Sedimentary structures that might be used to determine the facing of the banding;2. Over the decades, mine and mineral processing plant operations for the most part, have been found to have had adverse impacts on the environment. At the same time, mineral processing and mining operations produce mineral products that are indispensable to modern society. Thus, the sector has desirable and undesirable attributes simultaneously. The situation presents itself as a contradiction (i.e.) the mineral processing and mining operations are wanted by society, and at the same time unwanted by society. The existing methods of addressing the issues raised above have evidently not been very successful in reducing the opposition to new projects and to the related activities such as land acquisition. This paper attempts to show the relevance and applicability of TRIZ for addressing the issue. TRIZ, or Teoriya Rezheniya Isobretatelski Zadach, is a Russian acronym meaning Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. TRIZ is a powerful tool that can be usefully applied to resolve such contradictions, using resources usually available within the system of interest. Accordingly, this paper introduces the issue background, followed by an introduction to some key concepts of TRIZ such as the 40 principles, separation principles and directed evolution. The paper goes on to apply the 40 principles to two case studies. The results show that TRIZ could be a useful tool to generate potentially innovative and sustainable approaches. Its most appropriate position would be as a supplement to current decision-making procedures, and as a validation tool to review existing solutions for possible improvements. "The successful introduction of new high intensity stirred milling technologies (e.g. IsaMill, SMDetritor) to the mining industry in recent years prompted Noranda-Falconbridge to initiate a study comparing these technologies to the conventional technologies of ball milling and existing vertical stirred mills (e.g. VertiMill). The study was unique in that it utilized the same material (Brunswick Mine zinc cleaner regrind mill feed), the same sizing instrument (a Malvern laser difractometer) and sampling protocol, and media size and type (for the high intensity stirred mills). The paper compares the net energy efficiency (kWh/t) of the various technologies, their power intensity (kW/m3) and product size distribution spread (P80/P20). A key finding is that media size is critical to achieving optimal performance. As part of the performance comparison, an analysis of the four methods of power measurement was made (Prony brake, shaft torque, grinding chamber reaction torque, “no-load” correction) and followed-up with an experimental test procedure using three of these methods. The findings include divergent results for power measurements and some explanations based on the observations are proposed. The direct shaft torque and Prony brake calibration methods are shown to be the methods most suitable for stirred mills.INTRODUCTIONThe motivation for the investigation reported here was the lack of a suitable comparison within the available literature of relative grinding efficiency for the emerging crop of new industrial fine grinding technologies. Such comparisons are potentially fraught with inconsistency, from ore samples and grinding media used, to testing methodology, to size measurement techniques, to the power measurements themselves. The collaboration of the industrial suppliers (at the time MIM Technologies and Svedala, now Xstrada Technologies and Metso Minerals) and McGill University (P. Radsiszewski) were sought in order to ensure as valid a comparison as possible. The work was performed between October 2000 and November 2002, led by the mineral processing group at the Noranda Technology Centre (NTC) in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. The paper is presented in two sections; Part A considers the different power measurement methods and a comparison of the results for the SMDetritor (SMD) technology, while Part B reviews the grinding performance of the 5 technologies investigated using the selected performance criteria."

The Old Man Range, south of Alexandra, in central Otago consists of a package of highly folded greenschist facies schist of the Wanaka lithologic association. The range is crosscut by several east to ENE-striking high angle gold-bearing quartz veins, (eg Whites Reef and Grays Reef), which were extensively worked in the late 1800s. The range is bounded on its east side by the Old Man Fault, which separates these rocks from generally flat lying and planar Caples Terrane schist. To the west of the Old Man Fault, about halfway up the range, a large subparallel, 100 m wide fault zone strikes NNW and appears to cut off the historic veins. The fault zone consists of highly sheared and folded rocks and numerous high angle cataclasites and centimetre-scale clay gouge zones. Hydrothermal alteration is not apparent and the individual faults and shears are clay altered, possibly due to weathering, without visible quartz veins. Gold, limonite pseudomorphs after pyrite and rutile are concentrated in some of the narrow cataclasites and gouge zones. These mineralised structures are texturally similar to the gold-bearing reefs and may be structurally related. It is postulated that the NNW-striking shear zone and ENE-striking veins may be a conjugate array formed during a period of Cretaceous normal faulting.

Dielectric constants and dissipation factors were measured by the Bureau of Mines for 13 simulated lunar rocks over the 20-to 100-megahertz frequency range by means of the susceptance-variation method. Measurements were made at room temperature and normal atmospheric pressure. Results are presented and some comparison is made with data reported by others. The rocks used include a broad range of physical characteristics and chemical compositions from the large areas of volcanism in Oregon and northern California, and two nonvolcanic types. These rocks make up a suite of rock standards used by a group of laboratories engaged in lunar research. The data presented will add to the basic scientific and engineering knowledge needed to utilize extra-terrestrial mineral resources for support of future space missions.

The new Paradisus Coco Beach Resort in Rio Grande (PR) is located on an old swamp area, which has been filled with relatively clean to silty sands. The swampy deposits consists of organic silts, peat and loose fine to medium sand and silty sand. The project requires the placement of 1.0 to 1.5 meters of additional fill together with the construction of light structures. The need for the fill will trigger the development of settlements in the underlaying weak and compressible stratum. Furthermore, the susceptibility of the loose sand to liquefaction during an earthquake was considered. This paper describes the soil improvement by means of vibro-replacement, the purpose of which was threefold: reduction in total and differential settlement, acceleration of settlements during the surcharge period and densification of the loose sand to reduce its liquefaction potential. The predesign is presented together with relevant construction details of the preliminary trial areas from which the final column diameter and grid spacing were derived. Instrumentation together with settlement observations during the surcharge period are presented as well and compared with the initial predictions.

The key to the successful debt funding of a new mining project, whether in economically established or developing nations, is the submission of a comprehensive feasibility study. The feasibility study forms the basis from which the resource banker can construct financial models which govern the amount of available funds, the conditions which control the supply of such funds and the time period over which the loan may be repaid. The bank will wish to ensure that the feasibility study is the best representation and confirmation of reality possible because this model is the basis of the loan security package. Thus the study will be vigorously interrogated by independent experts in all its elements including the ore reserve, mineability, metallurgy, operating and capital cost profile, environmental factors and management. A well constructed feasibility study, undertaken by well recognised and respected independent consultants can save the client company a great deal of real and opportunity costs especially in relation to project timing. Once constructed and operating, the mining project may face one or more completion tests in relation to the loans provided. The genetics of such tests often relate to either the ability of the operating company to become solely responsible for the repayment of the loan or to be rewarded by lower interest rates or some other mechanism. Strong professionalism, accessible records, good checking procedures and high quality, competent site management will greatly assist the client company passing these tests. A record of well established technical competence with its bankers may well assist a company in the establishment of a mezzanine loan for the early development of its next project, thus allowing an earlier return of dividends to shareholders.

Increased application and interest in the use of microseismic monitoring to deal with ground control problems, Particularly those resulting in violent failures, has brought about the need for practical guidelines with respect to all phases of microseismic monitoring. This report presents the results of an 18-month effort to review the microseismic method and develop needed practical guidelines. Microseismic activity and properties of microseismic events are treated so that these parameters can be taken into account when developing monitoring equipment. Microseismic equipment is discussed to provide familiarization with the components of monitoring systems. Factors to be considered and procedures for developing a microseismic monitoring system are presented. Both physical and electrical considerations for the installation of a monitoring system are discussed in detail. The operation of a microseismic system including data analysis procedures is presented. Field examples to illustrate use of microseismic data in evaluating ground control problems are presented in a number of case histories.

This paper describes a novel system for the biological sulfate reduction (BSR) of acid mine drainage (AMD) using primary sewage sludge (PSS) as carbon source in an upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor configuration. A UASB reactor was operated at a temperature of 35¦C and it received PSS (1875 mg/L COD) augmented with sulfate (1500 mg/L SO42-). The experimental results indicate that a high treatment efficiency was achieved at more than 90 per cent sulfate reduction at a liquid hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 13.5 h. In this study, the effects of various operational parameters were also investigated. The effect of a biomass recycle stream from the top to the bottom of the sludge bed was found to initiate rapid BSR from the bottom of the bed. Profile tests showed that effective and immediate sulfate reduction was achieved as soon as the influent entered the reactor. From these results, it can be concluded that the UASB configuration using PSS as energy source would be a viable method for the BSR of AMD.

This paper is concerned with possible transport mechanisms which occur during segregated burning (i.e., burning in an oil reservoir in which the oil-bearing formation is overlain by a "clean" porous zone containing only gas). ,Two analytical models are presented. In the first, burning is assumed to occur at the gas-oil interface, and the dominant mechanism is taken to be the rate at which oxygen diffuses to the interface. The second model assumes that combustion occurs within the clean zone, with the dominant mechanism being the mechanism of fuel deposition from the oil-bearing formation to the clean zone. ,Comparison of the results of the analyses with limited experimental data indicates that the latter mechanism is much more plausible. Both models are idealized representations of the actual process and are somewhat conjectural, however, owing to the lack of more definitive laboratory or field data. INTRODUCTION In recent years there has been considerable theoretical and experimental research directed toward understanding the recovery of crude oil by underground combustion. Although two different recovery schemes have been proposed, known as forward and reverse combustion, it is only forward combustion that shows promise of becoming a practical recovery technique.17 Most of the analyses of the forward combustion process have considered it to be pistonlike; i.e., oil is displaced by a vertical combustion zone which, with its ensuing gases, pushes die oil forward as the flame front is propagated through the reservoir.l-8,ll,l2,14-16 However, information gained in field pilot studies indicates that, at least to a certain extent, forward combustion proceeds in a segregated manner in oil reservoirs.10 An ideal segregated system is one in which the oil-bearing formation is overlain by a "clean" porous zone containing only gas. The location of the combustion zone in such a system is not immediately evident, although combustion is believed to occur either at the gas-oil interface or within the clean zone. In either case, the combustion zone may be horizontal and it moves in parallel rather than in series with the produced oil. The purpose of this paper is to explore the likely mechanisms by which segregated burning can occur, and to determine the sensitivity of the resulting models to changes in various physical parameters. Two governing mechanisms are considered: the case of a horizontal combustion zone at the gas-oil interface with the rate of combustion governed by the rate at which oxygen diffuses to the interface, and the case of combustion within the clean zone with the combustion process controlled by the transport of fuel from the oil-bearing formation to the clean zone. Both models are somewhat hypothetical and involve considerable simplification of the actual process. However, the results allow some preliminary understanding of segregated burning which is useful in the absence of more definitive laboratory or field pilot data.

The Bureau de Recherches Geologiques et Minieres (BRGM) (a French Government-sponsored geological and mining agency), through international experience gained over many years, has become very skilled in alluvial prospection, particularly for diamonds. The research laboratories within the BRGM have also been active in creating new mineral processing equipment, some of which is directly applicable to such prospection. One such development, the mobile prospection unit, is described and its application in mineral exploration is demonstrated by a consideration of the diamond search in Australia and the general exploration of the Massif Armoricain (France). Because this latter study was fundamental in the development of the concept of 'mineral-geochemistry', and its application in mineral exploration, it is also briefly described.
