Like it or not, CPD is upon us. As from 1 January 2006, all registered engineering professionals, i.e. professional engineers, professional engineering technologists, professional certificated engineers and professional engineering technicians, were required to undertake CPD in order to keep their professional registration current. The rules regarding CPD have been gazetted under Government Gazette No. 28328, Board Notice 131 on 23 December 2005, and they also appear on the ECSA website?www.ecsa.co.za. For the convenience of our members they are reproduced in full in this issue of the SAIMM Journal.

This paper summarizes the progress of geological exploration at North Broken Hill Ltd.The North Mine orebodies occur in knots of minor folds on a simple limb structure which is itself highly folded, giving rise to two distinct orebodies pitching N. at av. 42° down to 2,920-ft. level, where the pitch steepens to near vertical as a result of complementary shear movement on the Globe-Vauxhall Crush Zone.The lack of adequate marker beds and top and bottom relations makes the resolving of the complex structural environment of the orebodies most difficult.To test the deeper ground of each side of the De Bavay Fault on the 2,600-ft. level the footwall drive was extended 3,556 feet and over 20,000 ft. of drilling completed from three transverse fans, only one of which intersected the orebodies due to steepening of pitch.The problem of locating the North Mine orebodies N. of the DeBavay Fault remains speculative because the exact position of them S. of the fault is still unknown. Exploration beyond the fault in the search for ore had two lines of mineralization to consider, an eastern one through Cosgroves-Round Hill, long regarded as the continuation of the main lode, and a western one passing through Silver Hill Silver Peak.From surface 45,000 ft. of drilling was completed in five sections, establishing that the structure was dominantly synclinal with a flatdipping E. limb, the W. limb and adjoining structures being involved in the Globe-Vauxhall Crush Zone. Mineralization, though weak, was remarkably persistent but the economic mineralization exposed at surface has not persisted with any continuity.Deep exploratory drilling below the bottom level (3,370 ft.) has established high-grade ore to a depth of 4,095 ft. and also has proved its existence within the Globe-Vauxhall Crush Zone.INTRODUCTIONThis paper summarizes the progress of geological exploration at North Broken Hill Limited from the inception of the Geological Department in 1941 until the end of 1955. "Seafloor mining provides significant potential economic benefits for many Pacific nations that may be "land poor" but "coastline rich," meaning they have the potential to utilize and profit from the mineral wealth within their Exclusive Economic Zones that extend 200 nautical miles (360 km) out from their coastlines. The Independent State of Papua New Guinea (the State) recognizes this tremendous opportunity and is taking a leadership role in this emerging industry by becoming a 15% partner in Solwara 1 (with an option to increase their investment to 30%).The Solwara 1 Project has been gaining momentum since Nautilus Minerals and the State signed an Agreement on April 24. This new agreement with the State in which they have staked a minimum 15% interest as a meaningful partner, underscores the State’s continued and widespread support for the Project. Signing of this Agreement was a historical occasion and a milestone achievement for Nautilus Minerals and the people of PNG.The machinery being built for the Solwara 1 Project is taking shape. The Seafloor Production Tools are now over 90 percent complete. Assembly of the biggest tool, the Bulk Cutter, was completed in April this year and assembly work on the Collecting Machine and the Auxiliary Cutter commenced in May and June this year respectively. The Riser and Lifting system, which will be used to transfer the mined material from the seafloor to the surface within an enclosed system, is over 50 percent complete. The critical path for the Solwara Project is to secure a suitable vessel arrangement. Nautilus aims to have this completed by the end of this year."

The outstanding trend in the graphite market is the fast-growing demand for cheaper qualities of graphite and the declining consumption of the more expensive varieties. The manufacture of graphite, crucibles for melting metals was one of the earliest applications of the-mineral and for many years constituted by far the leading source of demand. In later, years, however; and more especially since the Great War, the increasing demand for high-grade steel ingots and castings instead of enlarging crucible sales has permanently curtailed the domestic demand for crucibles because it has hastened the introduction of electric, oil or gas fired furnaces to replace the older types requiring pots to hold the metal during melting. While there has been a substantial increase in the use of graphite for miscellaneous refractories the total consumption for such purposes is too small to offset the shrinkage in demand for crucible making, and though it consumes the better and hence more expensive grades of crystalline flake graphite, it does not call so insistently for the still costlier Ceylon grades.

In modern mining, the core of mine planning and design is the block model, a simplified representation wherein the ore deposit is divided in a number of virtual rock cubes, each characterized by technical and economics parameters. Mining engineers use this model to design the mine and develop production schedules. Traditionally, sustainability issues are not considered in the mine design, planning and engineering processes but rather are incorporated in the later stages of the feasibility evaluation as necessary expenditures and operating costs. This paper describes the results of a research project aiming to develop a methodology to incorporate sustainability parameters directly into the block model, so that they become an integral part of the design, planning and scheduling processes. It is considered that the incorporation of sustainable parameters into the block model would yield a more responsible mine design and improve mining projects sustainability performance

Separation Technologies, LLC (ST) has developed a processing system based on triboelectric charging and electrostatic separation that provides the mineral processing industry a means to beneficiate fine materials with an entirely dry technology. The environmentally friendly process can eliminate wet processing and required drying of the final material. The process requires little if any pre-treatment of the material other than grinding and operates at high capacity - up to 40 tonnes per hour by a compact machine. Energy consumption is low, approximately 1 kWh/tonne of material processed. Since the only potential emission of the process is dust, permitting is typically relatively easy. In contrast to the other available electrostatic separation processes that are typically limited to particles greater than 75 µm in size, the ST belt separator is ideally suited for separation of very fine (<1 µm) to moderately coarse (500 µm) materials with very high throughputs. The triboelectric particle charging is effective for a wide range of materials and only requires particle-particle contact. The small gap, high electric field, counter-current flow, vigorous particle-particle agitation and self-cleaning action of the belt on the electrodes are the critical features of the ST separator. The high efficiency multi-stage separation through charging / recharging and internal recycle results in far superior separations and is effective on fine materials that cannot be separated at all by the conventional electrostatic techniques. Since 1995, this triboelectric process has been extensively used for the beneficiation of coal fly ash with eighteen separators in place and over 100 machine-years of operation at locations in North America and Europe. The technology has been also successfully applied to the beneficiation of a variety of minerals including calcium carbonates, talc, and potash.

IT has often been stated in the past that the materials known as inert fillers were merely adulterants nsed in the manufacture of paint, and that their purpose was to cheapen paints made from more expensive pigments, such as zinc oxide or white lead. In recent years, however, practical tests in various parts of the world have proved that many of the inert fillers, when used with wisdom, possess very definite and advantageous properties.Another oft-repeated statement which had a far-reaching effect in the past, and which is not without influence to-day, is that the very best paint must always be made from a pure pigment, without admixture with either a fellow pigment or an inert filler. Both or either of these statements may be true in a few isolated instances, but for the vast majority of ordinary painting conditions there is an abundance of experimental evidence to prove that neither is true.With the desire to further investigate these points and po &apos;determine the best combination of pigments and fillers for use as an outside white paint on plant buildings, a number of panels were prepared in the laboratory of this company.

"This paper examines the change in surface properties of the Polyurea used on spirals at different operational times: unused spiral, 28 months in operation and 58 months in operation. This is being done to investigate the alleged statement that spirals have a decrease in spiral separation efficiency after a certain period of operational time. Observing the surface characteristics under 1.5x and 36x magnification it can be concluded that the surface roughness decreases with increased operational time. This may be explained by a decrease in air inclusions and streak lines as the spiral surface wears. Decreased surface roughness should in theory have a beneficial effect on spiral separation performance. This leads to the conclusion that if a decrease in spiral separation performance is observed after a certain period of operation, it can’t be attributed to the change in surface properties. Uneven wear of the spiral surface, material creep or application of force to the spiral will change the profile of the spiral and could cause an adverse effect on spiral separation performance. The metallurgical test work showed that the best results are obtained at 30 - 35% solids by mass in the spiral feed. The iron recovery was significantly higher in the new spiral in comparison to the 2012 and 2010 spirals. The mass yield to concentrate in the new spiral was approximately three times more than for the older spirals. In conclusion, the yield combined with the grade, which equals the recovery was the best for the new spiral.IntroductionAn investigation was launched to research the common belief that spirals experience a decrease in efficiency, and therefore recovery, after a certain period of operation (a period of seven years has been used in the industry). At the Palabora Mine, the transition to caving 400 m below the bottom of the 800 m deep pit resulted in a slope failure of the North wall that began in 2003, and is still mobile. This failure can be explained by the daylighting into the cave zone of a prominent joint set. The failure was modelled by the 3-dimensional code 3DEC, which is capable of modelling the nonlinear behaviour of discontinuum materials with large displacement.

Handling materials in underground mines continues to be a major safety problem. To help reduce materials-handling injuries, researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are investigating those materials-handling tasks in underground mines that appear to generate a high number of injuries. Data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration for the years 1989-1999 were studied to find out if there were any trends in materials-handling accidents and if so, to determine what tasks were involved and the sources of injuries. Several underground coal and metal mines were visited to document innovative materials-handling technologies. Considerations for safety training and mechanization needs for continued reduction in materials-handling injuries are described.

The Bureau of Mines made experimental determinations of the heats of formation of forsterite and chrysotile at 298.15° K. The heat capacities of two polymorphs of serpentine, chrysotile and antigorite, were measured over the temperature range from 50° to 298° K and the entropies at 298.15° K were evaluated. The heat content of antigorite above 298.15° K was measured to 850° K. These thermochemical data were combined with other pertinent data to give heat and free energy of formation values at high temperatures. Free energy values are given for the reaction, forsterite + water = brucite + serpentine at different temperatures and pressures.

Keywords: Anglo American, Anglo Platinum Ltd, Waterval, Mortimer, Polokwane, ACP, pyrometallurgy, platinum, PGMs Anglo Platinum Ltd is the largest primary platinum producer in the world and operates three smelters in South Africa: Waterval, Mortimer and Polokwane. The operational details of the smelters are covered in previous reviews, thus only unit operations that have been upgraded are discussed. The most significant of the upgrades include the installation of a second ACP converter at Waterval Smelter in 2006 and the anticipated upgrade of Mortimer Smelter to 38MW in 2011. Several advances have been made in the smelting operations to improve the furnace stability and longevity. Control of the chromium input to each of the smelters has substantially allowed continued operations at levels below the spinel saturation point in slag, which results in lowered matte and slag temperatures. Mogalakwena concentrate, arising from the Platreef ore, is used to dilute high chromium-containing concentrates. In addition, furnace controls have improved in terms of crucible temperature and condition monitoring, improved feeding control, management of alarms and trips and having the quality of instrumentation and operational rigour required to support this. Advances have been made on the ACP converter in terms of good converter matte quality, and increased intensity and efficiency of operation. Combined with improvements to both the conventional and tower sulfuric acid plants, the emissions from Waterval Smelter have been reduced substantially since the introduction of the ACP. This is in spite of increasing metal throughput. The Anglo Platinum Ltd smelting operations have made significant progress since 2006 and further advances are envisaged to further improve on safety, reduce costs, increase efficiencies and throughput, while reducing emissions.

The Bureau of Mines annually canvasses the fuel-briquet and packaged-fuel producers in the United States and publishes economic data on these industries, based upon reports submitted voluntarily by producers. This publication lists all producers that reported commercial production to the Bureau for 1960 and presents data on individual plants. The companies named herein represent virtually all producers of processed minerals fuels. A few small plants may not have been canvassed or failed to respond to the survey because some of the smaller plants operate intermittently and the survey is voluntary. All plants that reported commercial production were included; regardless of size. Specifically excluded were plants that manufactured briquets from wood charcoal. Fuel briquets and packaged fuel are manufactured solid fuels, produced by mixing fine-sized mineral fuels with binding materials and compressing into small individual shapes, Briquets are produced in pillow-shaped and cylindrical form, are 2 to 4 inches long, and weigh 2 to 4 ounces. Packaged fuel consists of 3- or 4-inch cubes; 6 or 8 of which are wrapped together in heavy kraft paper to form a package weighing 10 to 15 pounds, Briquets are durable and may be stored and handled as bulk fuel; packaged fuel breaks easily and must be stored indoors to prevent it from deteriorating. Whereas briquets are consumed in many areas as a general residential fuel, packaged fuel is more of a specialty item, used at times to supplement other fuels. Packaged fuel is burned without re-moving the paper and is referred to as the "white glove" fuel.

Recent, detailed mapping, (Allibone, 1986; Peden, in prep.) of north west Stewart Island, has shown that the Rakeahua Granite (Watters et al, 1968), is comprised of a wide range of granitoid bodies ranging from diorite to leucogranite. As a result of the wide variation in granitoids Allibone (1986), suggests renaming of the Rakeahua Granite to the Rakeahua Granitoid Complex. Names were also proposed for the individual granitoid bodies mapped.

Mineral concentrators often use process water that is very saline and/or hard. In this paper the effect of increasing concentrations of sodium chloride and calcium chloride on the rheological properties of 70 wt% quartz suspensions (d5o - 10.6 ¦m) is reported. The apparent viscosity at 100 s t in 5 mol dm -3 sodium chloride solutions (approx. 300,000 ppm) was nearly 500 times the viscosity of water without salt or particles present. Part of the increase in viscosity is caused by aggregation (coagulation) of the suspension.

Between 1989 and 2004 the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA)constructed several major wastewater and water tunnels associated with three major projects in the Boston area of eastern Massachusetts. There were many similarities and differences in the bedrock conditions encountered and among the contractual approaches for these independent projects. Through a clarification of the approach similarities and analysis of the contract differences, this paper addresses and presents what are considered to be valuable lessons learned. In doing so, the paper follows the evolution of such disparate issues as contract conditions, baseline reports and dispute review boards. The authors believe that the lessons learned even represent what, in certain cases, could be referred to as “universal truths” that are intended to have application to the next generation of tunneling contracts.

One of the first matters to receive attention from the Bureau of Mines when it was authorized to undertake investigations relating to wastes in the mineral industries was the smoke problem at smelting and ore-roasting plants. This bulletin is published by the bureau primarily for persons who seek information on the subject of metallurgical smoke but are unacqllainted with the technical language of metallurgy. It is, of course, not possible to free a techniCal subject entirely from teclmicalities, but, 80 far as possible, statements are made in plain and simple English. Metallurgical smoke causes considerable friction between the metallurgical industry and agriculture in certain parts of the country. Owners of smelting plants are making every effort to devise ways and means to do away with possible damage and annoyance from smoke and are meeting with success. The problem is peculiarly difficult in this country because of the large tonnages of material that must be handled. The solution of the problem is not yet at hand and much work still remains to be done. As the mineral industry is one of the great basic industries of the country and of necessity is entitled to full consideration, it should be accorded freedom to work out the smoke problem to the benefit of all concerned. The effort is made in this paper to present the problem of metallurgical smoke as it actually exists, without bias of any kind. The writer takes this opportunity to express his indebtedness to the sources of information on which he drew, many of which are enumerated in the selected bibliography at the end of this paper. In connection with the author's use of the present tense in describing plants and methods, the reader should note that none of the references in that bibliography is of later date than 1913. Much information was obtained by personal visits and by correspondence, and thanks are hereby tendered to all persons who kindly furnished data. The writer desires to thank particularly F. G. Sensors are everywhere in the mining industry, with sensor information being used to monitor and operate processes. Therefore, when sensor information is wrong, economic losses can occur. Unfortunately, sensor errors are usually not detected till they become large. This is problematic as most calibrate their sensors no more than once a year (Beamex, n.d.). Using principles of data mining, where all relevant information is tapped to glean hidden information, Pothina [8] designed an algorithm to detect errors in temperature sensors in gold stripping circuit in Pogo mine, Alaska. This paper continued his work by analyzing the behavior of the algorithm on baseline data and testing the algorithm in new data and under more rigorous conditions. It also made a change to the algorithm. The modified algorithm performed very well in the new data. It also worked well under the new error conditions. Three types of errors were seeded, a fixed additive error (+ 2%), a fixed subtractive error (− 2%), and a noisy, normally distributed error, with a mean value of + 2%. Artificially seeded errors were detected within about 20 gold stripping cycles. Inherent bias in operation impacted algorithm performance by increasing the number of cycles needed to detect errors. This paper reinforced Pothina’s [8] conclusion that when data mining approach is used, sensor errors can be detected even when they are pretty low. Significant economic losses can thus be minimized.

"There has recently been a resurgence of interest in unit flotation of mill discharges. At the Kidd Creek concentrator, this technique has been successfully applied to silver flotation in a 3050 mtpd silver-copper-lead-zinc division. The major incentive has been improved silver payment through increased overall recovery and better distribution between the sequential copper, lead and zinc concentrates. A large, but variable fraction of the silver in the ore is present as native silver and, being dense and malleable, is susceptible to overgrinding. Grinding circuit surveys showed high concentrations of silver in both primary and secondary circulating loads. Laboratory testwork confirmed that this was selectively flotable, identified the secondary ball mill discharge as the best feed stream and optimized flotation conditions. A 10 t/h pilot plant campaign confirmed that the rate of accumulation of silver was sufficient to sustain continuous production of a silver concentrate and that flotation of the whole stream was not necessary.The present 30 t/h production circuit recovers from 5 to 50% of the silver in the ore at a concentration ratio between 25 and 250. The circuit also contributes to a better understanding of ore mineralogy, as an 'on-line' indicator of elemental silver content."
