I. INTRODUCTORY. INDUSTRIALLY, the most important service that geological science can now render to mining in the Upper Mississippi leadand zinc-fields is to devise some practical scheme whereby the productive ore-belts may be located with greater certainty than they have been in the past. Up to the present time there has been little service of this kind, and in spite of all that has been worked out concerning the geologic features of the region, and notwithstanding all that has been written about these ore-deposits, this particular phase of the subject has been, for some reason or other, the very one that has received the least consideration. The neglect by geologists in this respect has been all but complete. The following notes are suggestive of some practical solutions to the problems presented. As here suggested, the geologic relationships of the ore-bodies were surmised some years ago, though somewhat vaguely perhaps. No opportunity for securing critical data appeared until recent investigations of a private character were undertaken, which bad in view the extensive prospecting of undeveloped areas. Fresh from rather wide experiences of a decade in the principal mining-regions of four continents, and after a lenstrum's residence among the chief mining-camps of the West and of Mexico, under conditions which measured geologic hypotheses in meters and rigidly tested their values in, terms of dollars, the recent return to the Joplin field and a new survey of its ore-conditions were fraught with somewhat unexpected results. Aspects of the ore-deposition were presented of which previously there was no hint. Ten years' absence from the district had tended greatly to clarify former hazy impressions. It enabled many features, then only dimly outlined, to be considered more nearly in their true perspective and in their real relationships to their surroundings. This report describes a study, conducted jointly by BethEnergy Mines Inc. and the Bureau of Mines, to assess the effects of longwall front abutment loading on various supplemental support materials utilized in a predriven recovery room. The purpose of the predriven recovery room is to reduce longwall equipment transfer time by eliminating the premove preparation associated with conventional recovery methods. In addition, the room provides a large area in which face salvage equipment can maneuver. Results of four recovery-room study areas show the progression and influence of the front abutment on the longwall panel and supports and their subsequent behavior. The best performance (i. e. the support that most facilitated recovery) of support material was achieved through the use of a concrete mixture which had a sand content of 35 percent by volume. The longwall transfer time was reduced by 30 percent which translates to a production advantage of 37,000 raw tons of coal per panel.

This report summarizes the problems of topsail handling as related to present requirements of law and current equipment availability. The most prevalent topsoiling systems are reviewed along with a listing of advantages/disadvantages and best features of each system. Seven mining regions are included, along with an analysis of prevailing land use, types of soils and attendant physical, chemical am biological characteristics. There are several probable areas of future research "lined which can benefit mining, minimize the social impact of mined lands and speed the return of mined lands to more productive long-term use.

The Sappington Bridge, a steel arch span bridge constructed in 1904 over the Meramec River, was demolished due to its advanced state of deterioration. The demolition was a project to benefit Crawford County, Missouri, the U.S. Army, the Missouri Department of Transportation, and the University of Missouri – Rolla (UMR) was conducted jointly by the UMR Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center (RMERC) and the UMR Center for Infrastructure Engineering Studies (CIES). By arrangement with Crawford County, a 55-foot span of the old bridge was brought to the University Structures Laboratory in Rolla, while the longer, 200-foot span of the bridge was demolished using preburning and explosives. Originally, the longer span was to be blown up by C Company of the 5th Engineer Battalion (from Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri) under the supervision of personnel from UMR. Unfortunately, permission for the operation from the Department of the Army could not be obtained in time to meet permitting requirements for the demolition. Therefore, a commercial demolition contractor was employed to perform the demolition, and to remove the scrap.

Laser-arc Hybrid Welding (LAHW) is a relatively recent concept which effectively combines the advantages of laser welding such as the high depth of penetration, low heat input, high welding speed and the positive aspects of arc welding such as better edge bridging and possibility to add filler. For example, steel sections upto 12 mm thickness have been successfully welded in a single pass at a welding speed of 1 m/minute using a 3.5 kW CO2 laser in combination with a MIG arc. Maraging steel of grade M250 is widely used in the aerospace industry in thicknesses upto 10 mm. Conventionally, it is possible to MIG weld such thicknesses in 3-5 passes employing V-Groove joint preparation. However, this multi-pass welding results in formation of reverted austenite in the weld zone after post weld aging; and the high heat input widens the reverted austenite containing heat affected zone which is popularly known as the dark zone/eyebrow zone. Both these zones are detrimental to strength of the welded joint, specifically the fracture toughness. The width of the dark band is an important factor because, thinner the band, it is supported more effectively by the surrounding material. Therefore, in order to avoid multi-pass welding and reduce the overall heat input, single-pass laser-MIG hybrid welding was attempted on 10 mm thick maraging steel M 250 plates using a hybrid laser arc welding system comprising a 3.5 kW CO2 slab laser and a MIG welding system. Simultaneously, multi-pass MIG welds also are produced. Both the laser-MIG hybrid and MIG welds are characterized microstructurally and subjected to mechanical tests such as tensile and fracture toughness in as-welded and post weld aged condition. The amount and distribution of reverted austenite in the fusion zone and width of the dark band was found to be different. Hybrid welds showed a narrow dark band zone and improved mechanical properties. Laser-hybrid and MIG welding investigations carried out on thick section maraging steel M 250 will be presented in detail, including microstructure, tensile properties and fracture toughness of the welds. To the best of the knowledge of the authors there are no reports on laser-MIG hybrid welding of maraging steels.

THE sudden death of Dr. Drown, on Nov. 17, 1904, brought to multitudes the pang of personal loss. Of all those who, as students at Lafayette College, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Lehigh University, were brought under his influence, not one can have forgotten him, and all will now acknowledge, with an unfading gratitude, what they owe in professional equipment to his wise, clear, skillful guidance, and in character to his sympathetic, stimulating personality. Outside of this wide circle, the experts of both hemispheres will lament the departure of one who, in his department of scientific inves¬tigation, both knew what work was needed, and how to do it so that it needed not to be done again. The older members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers will remember with gratitude the part he took, as Secretary from 1873 to 1884, in promoting the interest of that organization, and in shaping the plan and policy which it has followed with such noteworthy success. And, in addition to all these (though partly included among them), there are a host of friends; who can scarcely think of the public loss by reason of their own. In 1960, the Secretary of the Interior, acting under the provisions of Public Law 454, 80th Congress, appointed a Lignite Advisory Committee to aid in programming research on coal (lignite) of the north-central area. The chairman of this committee is the Secretary of the Interior or his delegated representative, and in all meetings held during 1960 and 1961, the Director of the Bureau of Mines, Marling J. El presente texto evalúa el relave minero de SIMSA con el objetivo de obtener un producto ecológico que pueda ser utilizado como mejorador cationico de suelos y restaure el equilibrio de los suelos ácidos de la selva peruana. Para ello, se desarrolló un trabajo a nivel de laboratorio, obteniéndose resultados satisfactorios. The literature dealing with the drilling of oil wells has become extensive during the last few years, and oil men can find much information relating to drilling muds in the technical literature of the petroleum industry. Although large tonnages of clay are used in preparing drilling mud (also known as drilling fluid), almost no information has been published to apprise the clay industry of the types of minerals used, with their requirements and limitations. It is from this point of view that the present report has been prepared.

This report presents the results of an extensive laboratory testing program to determine the physical properties of shotcrete including the use of fast-set agents, controlled set cements, and both wet and dry shotcreting equipment. Shotcrete was placed under simulated field conditions using the dry and wet processes. Mechanical properties obtained for accelerated and nonaccelerated shotcretes include compressive, flexural, and shear strength, elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio, and shear and tensile properties of shotcrete bonded to coal, sandstone, and shale. Physical properties measured were unit weight and permeability to methane gas. The data show that rapid setting shotcrete has the potential for improved coal mine ground control. There is no clear evidence that either wet or dry process shotcrete is superior to the other; however, indications are that regulated set cement is preferred to cement containing fast-setting admixtures.

Vertical and lateral load tests were carried out on two 13 m deep bored cast-in-place instrumented piles, socketed into weathered sandstone. The first pile, 1200 mm in diameter, was loaded vertically to a maximum of 16000 kN and then loaded to failure under lateral load (1900 kN). The second pile, 1500 mm in diameter, was tested under lateral load up to a maximum of 2400 kN. It was found that the deflections of the 1200 mm pile were more than twice those of the 1500 mm pile under similar loads. The soils on the site are not easily tested in the laboratory, or by conventional insitu site investigation techniques, parameters needed in design can only be reliably obtained from pile test results. In this report shear moduli are back analysed from the vertical load test and the two lateral load tests. For these similarly installed piles very different design parameters were determined from the lateral load tests, the only known major difference between the piles being that the 1200 mm pile was loaded vertically before it was loaded laterally. Changes in G values needed to match performance under vertical load if applicable to lateral loading could have accounted for a significant amount of the difference.

Geologically simple deposits can be modeled quickly and easily with inexpensive gridding and mapping software. Hundreds of mines around the world use RockWorks99 and Surfer 7 for generating contour maps, producing log plots and cross sections, and performing other useful geological calculations. These programs are used by many mining operations as their only modeling and graphical software or they are used in conjunction with larger systems. The investment in learning time is low and the programs produce reasonable quality results with standard computing equipment. RockWorks99 and Surfer 7 provide a good level of capability while maintaining high quality technical integrity. Both programs are used for many applications in mining, oil and gas, environmental and other fields that require analysis of spatial data.

Barite, the natural sulfate of barium (BaSO4), is the most important barium mineral. Normally it is white (opaque to translucent), but impurities sometimes render it yellow, gray, blue, brown, red, or black. Brown or red stains are commonly caused by iron oxide. Barite is unusually heavy (specific gravity, about 4.5); in fact, it is one of the heaviest of the nonmetallic minerals. It is brittle and fractures unevenly. The hardness of barite ranges from 2.5 to 3 but is usually about 3. It can be scratched by a copper coin. Pure barite contains 65.7 percent BaO and A.3 percent S03. Much of the crude barite ore mined, however, contains impurities; thus it has a lower content of barite and consequently less barium oxide. Commercial analyses show its total BaSO4 content. Barium also occurs in nature as the mineral witherite (BaCO3), which, however, is not common in the United States, and commercial deposits have been found only in California. Witherite is a yellowish-white, light-gray, or Kite mineral with a specific gravity of about 3, a hardness of 3 to 4, and an uneven to subconchoidal fracture.

Studies were carried out to examine the effect of introducing varying levels of a pisolitic limonite (Yandi) into an Australian iron ore blend. Compared with other ores in the blend Yandi is more porous. This structure is found to have a considerable effect on the sintering behaviour of the blends. Pilot-scale sintering studies and plant trials showed that sinter plant productivity, sinter reducibility and the low-temperature reduction degradation index altered significantly when the level of Yandi in the ore blend exceeded 15 wt%. The improvement in the reducibility is thought to be a direct result of increased porosity in the sinter and the presence of highly reducible pseudo-relict haematite. Plant trials have also shown that operational changes could be made to the sinter plant to avoid potential deterioration of productivity

Where the equipment, technique and materials are available for the construction of large diameter rock socketted piles, this is frequently the most economical and environmentally acceptable method of supporting very large concentrated foundation loads in geoglogically appropriate areas. This paper outlines the current approaches in Australia to design and installation of large diameter rock socketted piles. The equipment and procedures described generally reflect those developed or used by Vibro-Pile (Aust.), a company which, while installing the usual range of driven and bored piles, specializes in the design and construction of large diameter rock socketted piles and possesses special expertise in drilling in high strength rock. A high capacity crane attached drill for large diameter drilling in rock is briefly described. Discussed in detail are the construction techniques employed and structural and geomechanical design methods adopted.

Future metal prices play a direct role in both the economic evaluation and short to medium planning of a mine scheduling sequence. It is difficult to predict with accuracy the future price of volatile metal commodities, however, it is possible to fix some future metal price, outside of long term contracts by the selling of futures contracts through a commodities exchange. The futures contract represents a fixed amount of a specified quality of a commodity for future delivery at a predetermined price. Several different types of hedging are possible, one in particular which is best suited for mining companies. There are relative advantages and disadvantages when trading in futures contracts and particular reference is made to gold contracts on the Sydney Futures Exchange.
