The paper introduces a new rock mass cuttability classification (RMCC) system for roadheaders used in coal mines. It includes performance prediction models for both axial and transverse roadheaders, based on six parameters: uniaxial compressive strength, Cerchar abrasivity index, volumetric joint count, strike and dip of joints, joint aperture, and groundwater condition. The study validates the RMCC system through field and laboratory measurements, showing high correlation coefficients between net cutting rates and RMCC indices.

To simulate brittle rocks, a mixture of glastone, sand and water was used as a model material. Thin galvanized sheets were used to create joints in blocks made out of the model material. To investigate the failure modes and strength, both the intact material blocks as well as jointed model material blocks of size 35.6 × 17.8 × 2.5 cm having different joint geometry configurations were subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compressive loadings. Results obtained from the intact model material blocks are used to validate a new intact rock failure criterion for biaxial loading. Results obtained from both the intact and jointed model material blocks are used to develop a strongly non-linear new rock mass failure criterion for biaxial loading. In this failure criterion, the fracture tensor component is used to incorporate the directional effect of fracture geometry system on jointed block strength. The failure criterion shows the important role the intermediate principal stress plays on rock mass strength. Es wurde das Versagensverhalten und die Festigkeit von intakten Blöcken sowie durchtrennten Blöcken mit unterschiedlicher Trennflächengeometrie untersucht. Aus den Ergebnissen der Versuche an intaktem Material wurde ein neues Versagenskriterium für biaxiale Belastungen validiert. Die Ergebnisse der Versuche an intakten und durchtrennten Blöcken wurden verwendet, um ein neues stark nicht-lineares Versagenskriterium für geklüftetes Gebirge unter biaxialer Belastung abzuleiten. Darin wird der Bruchtensor verwendet, um den Einfluss der Trennflächengeometrie auf die Festigkeit zu erfassen. Das Versagenskriterium stellt heraus, welche Bedeutung die mittlere Hauptspannung für die Gebirgsfestigkeit hat. Un mélange de platre dentaire, de sable et d’eau a été utilisé pour développer un matériau analogue des roches fragiles. De fines feuilles galvanisées permettent de créer des discontinuités représentatives des discontinuités naturelles dans des bloques fabriqués avec ce matériau analogue. Les modes de rupture et la résistance, tant pour le matériau intact que pour le matériau avec ses discontinuités, ont été étudiés sur des blocs de 35.6 × 17.8 × 2.5 cm soumis à des efforts de compression uniaxiaux et biaxiaux. Différentes configurations de géométrie de discontinuités ont été considérées. Les résultats obtenus à partir des blocs intacts permettent de vérifier un nouveau critère de rupture pour les roches intactes soumises à des efforts biaxiaux. Les résultats obtenus, tant avec les blocs intacts qu’avec les blocs avec discontinuités, sont utilisés pour développer un nouveau critère de rupture, fortement non linéaire, pour les massifs rocheux soumis à des chargements biaxiaux. Dans ce critère de rupture, un tenseur de fractures est introduit pour caractériser les effets directionnels de la géométrie des systèmes de discontinuité sur la résistance des blocs avec discontinuités. Ce critère de rupture démontre le rôle important de la contrainte principale intermédiaire sur la résistance des massifs rocheux.

A new monitoring device called SAFEBOLT (Stress And Force Evaluator in Bolts) has been recently developed. The device SAFEBOLT, essentially replaces the load cell, it permits the monitoring of bolt axial load from the time of its installation underground. The SAFEBOLT system consists of a portable readout unit, connecting cable and the SAFEBOLT device, which is installed in the bolt head. SAFEBOLT can be installed on any industry standard rockbolt. No special installation method is required; the conventional method of bolt installation by the stoper or roofbolter remains unchanged. The device is completely encapsulated in the bolt head, which makes it resistant to corrosion, rugged, and free of any electrical wires. Pilot tests at three underground Quebec mines were carried out and helped improve the initial design of the device connector. The paper reports on two of such pilot tests.

The new South African Mineral Policy has major implications on the way mineral rent will be collected and shared between the stakeholders in future. Although the policy does not supply details on how this will be done, drastic departures from practices under the previous dispensation require a new approach. For example, there introduction of the ?right to mine? principle implies that the repealed lease consideration concept will be expanded to all minerals. The new policy also makes provision for predetermined standard terms and conditions for all prospecting and mining permissions. It also states that, regardless of whether the mineral rights are state or privately-owned, all prospecting fees and mineral royalties will be determined by state officials after consultation with the registered holder of the mineral rights. This paper proposes a standard mineral royalty formula that complies with the principles mentioned in the White Paper and has been shown to be internationally competitive.

THE object of this paper is to bring to. the notice of engineers a safety detonating fuse by the use of which misfires in blasting may be eliminated and safety in blasting operations promoted. This new detonator is a French invention and is known as Cordeau detonant or detonating fuse and is sold under the name of Cordeau-Bickford. It consists of a lead tube 5 to 6 mm. in diameter, filled with trinitro-toluene. While applicable to all classes of mining it will appeal especially to those who have to do with deep-hole blasting in open-cut clines or quarries, or any operations where a large number of holes are to be shot at one time. Since the introduction of the deep-hole blasting in the Cornwall iron mines, much trouble has been experienced from misfires and many experiments were made to determine the best and safest method of blasting. Before the introduction of the detonating fuse it was found that to insure the best results, two or more high-power electric exploders, not less than No. 6, with specially insulated conductors, should be placed in each hole; the holes wired in parallel, and for a large number of holes the current to be supplied by a live wire to the bus or lead wires at about the middle of the bench. The voltage in general use is 110 to 220, but as our material is a magnetic iron ore and the holes are generally damp, we found it advisable to reduce this to about 30 volts to prevent short circuits. A No. 7 or No. 8 special insulated detonator was adopted. But with the best of care and attention to the minutest detail, we were not able to eliminate occasional misfires and the consequent ever present danger of accidents.

Sampling of grain for mycotoxins is challenging in that some mycotoxins, such as Ochratoxin A (OTA), have very low permitted levels and the kernels carrying the mycotoxin may be highly localised within the bulk of the grain as ‘hot spots’. Sampling for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be fraught with similar problems, especially if the contamination is adventitious and random. Incremental sampling under these circumstances can be shown to lead to a high variance in the sampling result.A new design of sampler for grain and other free-flowing particulates has been developed that is effective in practically eliminating the sampling variance due to distributional heterogeneity (DH).This paper introduces the design and argues that the sampler should be free of sampling variance due to DH.CITATION:Lyman, G J, 2017. This paper describes six basic stages between perception and production for a new sand and gravel deposit. Sand and gravel, like many of our natural resources, is taken for granted. It is assumed by John Q. Public that because sand and gravel is ubiquitous that it is available whenever and wherever needed - so long as it does not have to be mined in his neighborhood. This idea illustrates one of the enigmas of the industry, the fact that sand and gravel is abundant; however, its availability is another matter. Another problem is that this resource falls in the category of high volume, low profit materials; therefore, transportation costs are critical. Transportation roughly doubles the cost of these materials. It is not difficult to find sand and gravel, at least in Michigan. The problem is to locate a new source close to a market, near an adequate transport route (usually a highway) and in an area which will allow mining.

An experimental hole-to-hole seismic probe system has been developed for use in coal measure geology as a means of determining the structural conditions of coal seams. The source probe produces a 500-joule electric arc discharge whose seismic wavelet has a spectrum in the 200 to 2,000 Hz frequency range. Low compliance hydrophones contained in the source probe as well as in a separate seismic detector probe are matched to the frequency range of the source. Both probes are constructed with 5-72 cm diameter housings. The transducers in the probes are equipped with fluid-inflatable boots to permit operation in either wet or dry boreholes. Preliminary tests in vertical boreholes drilled 213 m apart in sedimentary rock formations show reliable operation and useful seismic propagation measurements along horizontal and oblique paths up to 232 m in length. Because the seismic wave- let has an accurately repeatable waveshape, multiple shots and signal averaging techniques can be used to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio and extend the transmission distances.

"With the recent advancement in drill core imaging systems, a large volume of high resolution drill core images can now be rapidly collected and mineralogically classified. This paper introduces a novel semi-automated method for rapid prediction of process engineering parameters from this type of image. The aim is to allow for a rapid and low-cost assessment of the ore processing variability within a mineral deposit with a reduced amount of metallurgical test work. This method will see its application primarily in the project evaluation phase, where proper evaluation of the processing variability of the orebody normally requires a prolonged and costly metallurgical test work program. Applying this image-based texture analysis method on the mineralogical classified drill core images, the ores are classified according to their textures. For each engineering parameter, a small number of physical test work is required to produce a data set for training and testing of the predictive model. It is more than ten years since the first fully automated process using a computer started operation. Computer control has become common in a number of process industries, yet in spite of the tremendous incentives which ere present, there are only a few computer installations in the mining industry and none of these has announced successful control of a process. Recognizing that one of the reasons for this slow progress is the lack of adequate mathematical models of the various processes involved, the author's company started a project in the summer of 1966 to develop such models. It was early recognized that the existence of a major disturbance input, in the form of the mineral composition of the feed prevents most flotation plants from attaining a steady state condition. This makes the custom¬ary method of developing correlations from steady state plant data inapplicable and requires a more fundamental approach.

THE primary object of the work described in the following pages was to simplify the equipment in the separating circuit of the heavy-media process by substituting a spiral classifier for the separatory cone. Mechanical considerations were the leading attraction and the best that was hoped for on metallurgical performance was that the new vessel would give results equal to those obtained by conventional equipment. Tests have demonstrated in commercial operation on iron ore that the mechanical advantages of the spiral separator are about as predicted; also, the metallurgical performance is superior to the cone on the ores treated. Treatment of iron ore involves the separation of two products: a concentrate that sinks and a float product that contains true float material plus a controlled division of interfering middling. The middling material is heavier than the average specific gravity of the separating medium. Recent work with the spiral separator on Tri-State zinc ore showed that the middling material had to be recovered as concentrate because this fraction contained the bulk of the-zinc in the ore. It has been demonstrated that it is possible to make three products with the new separator on an ore such as this: a float tailing, a float middling, and a high grade heavy sink product. It appears from this last work that the new separator has definite mechanica1 and metallurgical advantages over any type of separating cone for treating feed that contains large amounts of material of a specific gravity close to that of the separating medium. However, either type of separator should perform equally well, metallurgically, on feed that is free of middlings. Each series of experiments with the spiral separator as required additional work to fully develop the possibilities of the machine. For this reason the paper is divided into chronological parts. History of Development A drag-type classifier was first proposed as a substitute for the cone separator by Butler Brothers technicians during the initial tests with galena medium at Crosby, Minn., in 1937. The desire for finding a substitute for the cone arose from trouble with interfering middlings and certain operating disadvantages of the cone. The possibility of using a spiral classifier was also suggested at this time by Emmett Butler and C. J. Abrams. However, inability to satisfactorily recover fine galena, which was used as a medium, terminated all development work at Crosby. During the winter of 1937--1938 investigation started on magnetic medium with concurrent s development of the inverted or closed- top cone, which was found necessary to eliminate iron-ore middlings with the float product. A BRIEF history of the growth of the anthracite-coal preparation will give a better view-point from which to judge the present problem of separating slate from coal. At the beginning of the commercial value of anthracite, 70 years ago, only the pure portions, or " splits," of the veins were mined and shipped to market, and without any preparation or screening other than the selection, while loading, of the glassy lumps, and the rejection of the fine material and the slate that had strayed accidentally into the coal. The next step was the crushing or breaking of the coal (hence the name Lt breaker" as applied to the preparation-building), and the sizing of it by means of bars or revolving screens. This stage of its development marked the advent of the "breaker-boy " as a slate-¬picker, with his ever-increasing capriciousness. As the richer veins or ? splits " became exhausted and the market demanded a still greater output, the less-pure " splits " and the thinner veins were utilized to produce the coal. Carrying as they do a far greater percentage of impurities; particularly when removing the pillars, it became necessary to build new and better equipped preparation-plants. Finally, we are now at the highest stage of complication yet known to the art of coal-preparation. A new series of reports called ?Mineral Perspectives" (MP's) has been initiated by the Bureau of Mines with the publication of MP-1 titled, "Far East and South Asia" by K.P. Wang and the staff of the Bureau of Mines. This new series parallels the creation of the recently announced "Minerals Commodity Profiles" (MCP?s). Both series are designed to provide current information on important sectors of the mineral economy to assist professionals in government, industry, and education in monitoring supply-demand relationships that have significant impact on our domestic economy as well as on the international scene. The orientation of the "Mineral Perspective" series is a geographic one which examines the mineral situation of a region or a country. The "Mineral Commodity Profile? series examines individual mineral commodities. They are in this sense complementary.

In the last 40 years, the froth flotation process widely spread in the paper industry becoming the dominant technology for ink removal from recovered paper slurries and cellulose fibres recovery. Most of current models used to describe the flotation deinking process are based on hydrodynamic and statistical theories of ink particles collision/attachment to air bubbles. The complexity of these theoretical models, together with the variability of the recovered papers composition, does not allow to define a set of æeasy to handleÆ equations to be used for modelling industrial flotation cells. This main limiting aspect makes that, in several deinking process modelling tools, basic parameters used to characterise the flotation unit, ie yield, ink removal efficiency, water loss, are constant parameters. Although in some process simulation tools the flotation yield/efficiency is adapted to process control parameters (air ratio, pulp flow, pulp consistency), physicochemical variables (namely the pulp frothing aptitude, the pulp surface tension and the ink adhesion energy to air bubbles) are not taken into account to adjust the flotation yield/efficiency. Data collected during recent laboratory and pilot plant experiments focusing on the role of surface active substances on the flotation efficiency were therefore interpreted and used to identify general trends that could be described with simple semi-empirical models. A set of model equations using surface tension and froth removal height as main variables was then defined in order to describe the behaviour of a pilot flotation cell. Trends obtained during the dynamic simulation of the deinking pilot plant were in good agreement with experimental data obtained under similar experimental conditions, thus indicating that developed equations can forecast with good approximation the behaviour of a flotation deinking unit.

New is a relative term, and, when used with reference to a concept as old as shaft kilns can be applied to a number of designs. In this case the design that is the subject of this paper, is known as the ring or annular shaft kiln as developed by Mr. Karl Beckenbach of West Germany. The first&apos; operating unit was rated 185 tons per day and was installed in 1962. Today, there are approximately 84 units in operation in Western Europe and Japan. Twenty-one additional units are in the process of erection or on order. Developed sizes range from approximately 100 to 330 tons per day. Units of over 500 tons are in the design stage, however, the largest units presently operating are rated 330 tons per day, <the first: of this size having been installed in 1966. "Figure" 1 is an elevation view of the unit. It is a single vertical cylinder to which are attached the required service platforms, combustion chambers, injectors and distribution piping. Auxiliaries such as recuperator, exhaust fan and dust collector are mounted on the appropriate service platform. The charging pan, feed conveyor, etc. are mounted at the kiln top. At the bottom of the kiln is the silo with a vibrator type discharger, and mounted separately is the required blower for injector air and fan for internal cooling.

The MineSight Schedule Optimizer (MSSO) is a new production scheduling tool developed by Mintec, Inc. using mixed integer linear programming (MILP) techniques. This tool was developed to solve the short- and medium-term schedule problems for surface and underground mining operations that involve multiple mining areas, multiple processes, multiple destinations and blending requirements. MSSO finds the optimum schedule in each period that achieves the objective while satisfying comprehensive product quality and quantity requirements as well as physical and technical constraints. Using the MineSight Planning Database (MSPD) as a central data hub, MSSO seamlessly works with MineSight 3-D (MS3D) block models and third-party data, MineSight Interactive Planner (MSIP), MineSight Haulage (MSHaulage) and MineSight Activity Planner (MSAP) to prepare data, formulate MILP models, calculate, report, fine-tune, save and visualize schedules. This paper presents the features and capabilities of MSSO. A case study is also given to demonstrate the applications of this new tool.

SOME time ago, the writer received from W. 0. Borcherdt, Manager of the, works of the Bertha Mineral Co. at Austinville, Va., several specimens of a dense yellowish slag-like material, containing cavities showing clear needle-like crystals, and representing a product formed by the fumes of zinc oxide and basic lead sulphate from the oxide furnace, attacking the firebrick lining of the flues. The matrix, which is of a greenish-yellow color, is made up chiefly of an amorphous glass, carrying numerous crystals, the latter being well-defined, clear, and transparent, but colored a very light yellow by small amounts of ferric oxide. A number of the crystals were carefully separated from the matrix and tested with the blowpipe. They have a fusibility of about 2, yield a globule of lead and a coating of lead oxide before the blowpipe on charcoal, and contain some zinc. Their hardness is 5 to 6. 1 Fig. 1. Under the microscope the crystals appear to be made up of a prism, with narrow faces, and a fairly large pinacoid, but unfortunately show no terminal faces (Fig. 1). Between crossed nicols they gave parallel extinction in. the three planes containing the crystallographic axes, and are therefore orthorhombic. The index of refraction is high. SUMMARY This is a report of a new development in on-line particle size measurement of fine powders in dust-laden gases. A continuous sample of the solids-air suspension is drawn from the process stream via a sampling probe by means of an air operated ejector into a cyclonic separator whereby the sample is subjected to a particle size dependent separation process and split into two streams, "overflow" and "underflow". The overflow stream carries most of the fines at a relatively low concentration and the underflow stream carries the coarse particles at a relatively higher concentration. The concentration of solids in the two streams is detected by electrostatic noise level technique which utilises the electrostatic charge accumulated on the solid particles due to their high velocity in the turbulent air stream, for the mass concentration measurement. The ratio of the solids concentration of the fines stream to that of the coarse stream is then correlated against the average particle size in the main process stream by a calibration curve. The in-plant tests clearly indicate that this relatively simple instrument offers good sensitivity in the size range from 2 to 6 µm, and is capable of giving a continuous indication of average particle size for process control purposes. Although the instrument was developed for a particular application, it may be used in other situations where fine powders are conveyed in gas streams. British and foreign patents are applied for.

Since 1965 several researchers have independently developed computer models for designing gathering belt and surge bin capacities in underground coal mine belt systems. Table 1 summarizes the models applicable to U.S. mining systems. Most of the models, employ the Monte Carlo simulation technique. Basically, the belt loading at each loading point is randomly produced from probability distributions. In some cases, a combination of deterministic calculations and probability distributions are used to simulate the loading. Once the loading is simulated, it is systematically moved through the belt system in a deterministic fashion based on belt speeds, belt lengths, and storage bin discharge rates. The coal flowing from each loading point is tracked as it moves through the belt system. When the loading from tm different sources combines on a belt or in a surge bin, checks are made to determine if capacities have been exceeded. If capacities have been exceeded the amount of spillage is calculated. At the end of the simulated time period, the cumulative spill- age is used to evaluate the belt and surge bin capacities. Naturally, a considerable amount of spillage indicates the capacities are unacceptable. Acceptable capacities are generally indicated by minimal spillage. Numerous trial simulations are often necessary to find the acceptable capacities.

Cold rolling is one of the most important techniques in metal forming since the cold rolling products are almost finished product, The product quality of this process is widely influenced by friction in the roll gap; therefore, controlling the friction and other parameters affecting the cold rolling is very important in order to have a product with high quality, Among the cold rolling parameters, the pressure distribution or friction hill within the roll gap is known as the most significant one, In this study, a new software (Matroll), is introduced which can determine the coefficient of friction (COF) and plot the friction hills for an industrial mill, Besides, based on rolling equations, it offers about 25 rolling parameters as outputs. To verify the software operation, the real industrial rolling data was used as inputs, The results (outputs) are in good agreements with the findings of other researchers, The COF values are very reasonable, The friction hill shows that COF is not constant over the whole arc of contact.
