O objetivo desse trabalho é planejar e controlar a chegada de veículos para carregamento nas plantas ArcelorMittal Tubarao e ArcelorMittal Vega, apresentando uma agenda com os horários disponíveis para o transportador escolher. Esse processo de escolha de um horário disponível é suportado por uma agenda gerada pela usina, considerando as restrições operacionais e de capacidade de expedição por ponto de carregamento. Programar a chegada de veículos aumenta a previsibilidade da necessidade de recursos adicionais para realizar o carregamento e assim não gerar filas, não perdendo produtividade no processo de transporte com veículos parados. A ausência da programação tem uma abrangência muito maior que apenas perda de produtividade e atrasos, ela também eleva o custo total de transporte da cadeia de suprimentos. Visando aumentar a competitividade e melhorar a previsibilidade do processo de expedição, foi implementada a solução para regular o fluxo de chegada dos veículos, sistematizando o processo de agendamento do veículo para carregamento.

Twin-roll casting is an integrated casting and rolling process that involves the continuous solidification of a melt and the plastic deformation of the solidified metal between two rotating rolls. Computer modeling is a valuable tool to help engineers understand the metallurgical process during twin-roll casting. However, commercially available software can only model either the fluid flow/heat transfer of the melt or the plastic deformation of the solid, but not both. In this study, an object-oriented finite element program was developed to simulate the steady-state fluid flow, solidification and plastic deformation of an A7,31 magnesium alloy in a horizontal twin-roll caster. The melt, the mush zone and the solid were treated as a generalized Newtonian flow in an Eulerian reference frame and different constitutive equations were employed to describe the material behaviours. The effect of operational parameters on the solidification process was discussed based on the simulation results.

The mining industry has long recognized the value of dispatch systems in open pit mines as they reduce load and haul costs. Over the years, researchers have proposed many dispatch systems with various limitations and advantages. The simplest dispatch algorithms are the so called 1-truck-for-N-shovels dispatch strategy. These algorithms are limited by the fact that their objective functions do not consider all the objectives of a mine and cannot be applied to all possible truck-shovel configurations. They are also myopic in nature. However, they are simple and computationally efficient and do not require occasional updates of the upper stage problem as required in multi-stage dispatch algorithms. In this work, an agent-based truck dispatch algorithm that conceptualizes trucks as intelligent agents that make autonomous dispatching decisions to maximize their utility is proposed. The advantages of this algorithm includes utility functions that encapsulate all of management’s objectives and agent’s with broad situational awareness. They are also more suitable for autonomous trucks. We evaluate the new algorithm against a simple 1-truck-for-N-shovels dispatch strategies using discrete event simulation. The simulation results show that the new utility function has significant advantages over 1-truck-for-N-shovels inspired utility functions. Future work will incorporate adaptive behavior into the model via reinforcement learning algorithm. INTRODUCTION In an attempt to optimize truck shovel operations in open pit mines in order to reduce the cost of haulage operation, which according to (Alarie and Gamache, 2002) is estimated to be about 50-60% of the total cost of mining, several effective and efficient strategies have been developed. Optimizing truck haulage systems in an open pit mine is one of the greatest challenges of mining engineering and has been the subject of many research projects. It is important that haulage systems are designed to be efficient, in order to minimise haulage cost, improve profitability and increase the total mine value. Although optimizing the number of trucks required in the operation of open pit mines can help reduce the cost, an effective and efficient truck dispatching system add value by ensuring that the available trucks are used efficiently. With truck dispatching systems, the trucks are normally dispatched between the crusher and dumping station (e.g. waste dumps and stockpiles), and the shovels in order to maximize the total output, obtain grades targets, reduce fuel consumptions and other objectives. Truck dispatching, which can have one or more objectives, is typically subjected to certain operational constraints such as truck and shovel capacities, empty and loaded trucks speed, among others. The problems associated with truck dispatching was first mentioned by Dantzig and Ramser (1959) after they made an attempt to determine the optimum routes of a fleet of delivery trucks between bulk terminals and a service stations. The problem occurs in several industrial systems besides mining (Alarie and Gamache, 2002; Gendreau et al., 2006; Rego and Roucariol, 1995). The dispatching problem, also referred in literature as the vehicle routing problem, has seen a number of modifications and extensions with Bertsimas and Ryzin (1991) presenting a dynamic and stochastic vehicle routing problem, and Ralphs et al. (2003) also adding to the original concept, the concept of vehicle capacity routing.

Complex ores, characterised by intimate intergrowths between minerals, have previously been treated by flotation with limited success. The most common problem has been that the liberation size is often finer than the lower size limit for selection flotation. A technique has been developed in which the problem is overcome by the use of a selective agglomeration procedure in which the values are coalesced with oil to a size suitable for flotation prior to introduction into the flotation machine. A complex lead ore was characterised by QEM*SEM mineralogy as having a mean galena liberation size of 15 ¦m. The best recovery of lead at 50 per cent Pb grade by standard flotation was 53 per cent. After application of the procedure, 86 per cent recovery was obtained after a single cleaner step. The oil functions as a bridging liquid in the presence of conventional collectors which render the mineral oleophillic.

To date, intractable ore specific operational challenges such as poor heap geotechnical stability, permeability and high acid consumption rates associated with low grade (~1 wt%) nickel (Ni) laterites still makes the adoption of heap leaching processing unattractive. This paper presents some highlights of drum agglomeration, column leaching and characterization studies undertaken to foster the understanding and knowledge of some of the desirable product attributes of -2 mm and -15 mm, low grade saprolitic (SAP) and goethitic (G) Ni laterite feed ores and their blends (SAP/G). For column leaching, 5-40 mm agglomerate beds were continuously irrigated with 200 g/dm3 H2SO4 solution at 8.5 dm3/m2/h rate over 100 days. Ni, Co, Fe, Al and Mn extraction rates, free acid concentration, agglomerate bed slump and structural changes were determined as a function of time. The results show that at equivalent feed masses, except -15 mm G which displayed slower, pseudo-layering based behaviour, all the feeds (single and blends) displayed coalescence controlled agglomeration behaviour at varying binder dosages. Whilst the agglomerate compressive strength of the G ore was markedly higher than that of SAP ore, those of the blends were substantially similar. At fixed column leaching conditions, the Ni/Co extractions and acid consumption were higher for SAP ore whilst the agglomerate bed slump was lower than those for G ore. The bed of agglomerates produced from -2 mm G/-15 mm SAP blend was more stable than that for the -2 mm G/-2 mm SAP blend agglomerate, the latter experiencing blockage within 24 h of acid irrigation due to agglomerates breakdown. The Ni/Co extractions and acid consumption rates obtained for agglomerates of -15 mm G/-2 mm SAP blend were lower than expected based on the ratios of the SAP and G ores within the blend composition. The findings suggest that judicious saprolitic and limonitic ores’ blending could reduce acid consumption rate, improve the agglomerate bed robustness and enhance bed percolation behaviour under prolonged acid irrigation periods during heap leaching of lateritic ores of variable mineralogy.

The sedimentation and dewatering characteristics of flocculated slurries are determined by the size and density of the flocs. Studies of the formation and growth of flocs reveal that floc size is limited by breakage of the agglomerates due to shear in the suspension. Floc density measurements indicate that there is an inverse relationship between size and density. This relationship appears to be determined primarily by the nature of the solid particles, especially the size distribution, but it appears that agitation of the suspension can lead to some densification of the flocs, in addition to breakage. It follows that both size and density can be controlled to a significant extent by regulating the physical conditions (agitation, method of flocculant addition etc.) during flocculation. The use of physical floc conditioning to control the sedimentation and dewatering (filtration) behavior of flocculated, fine-particle suspensions is evaluated in terms of its effects on floc size end density.

Introduction Many discoveries have been made during the-past decade of low grade gold-silver deposits in the western US. This has stimulated development of low cost cyanidation procedures for precious metal extraction. Heap leach cyanidation techniques possess considerable potential for application to these low grade ores, small ore bodies, mine strip waste, and tailing materials where fine grinding is not necessary for good extraction. For heap leaching to be successful, these resources must have good permeability to achieve uniform distribution of the cyanide solution throughout the heaps. Some of the most difficult of the gold and silver ores to treat successfully by heap leaching are those containing excessive amounts of clays, or fines generated by crushing. Presence of excessive amounts of slimes, -50 µm (-270 mesh), in the heap leach feed will slow percolation, cause channeling, or produce dormant or unleached areas within the heap. This may result in unreasonably long leaching periods and poor extractions. In extreme cases, the clays or slimes can completely seal the ore heap. This causes the leach solution to run off the sides of the heap rather than penetrate the ore bed. The problem of heap leaching ores with fines can be aggravated while preparing ore heaps because of the natural sorting of coarse and fine material that occurs. This phenomenon results in concentration or ore fines in the center of individual ore piles and concentration of larger rock fragments of the lower slopes and base of the pile. When the individual piles within the heap are leveled off for the installation of the sprinkling system, additional segregation occurs as the fines sift through the coarser ore particles. This results in localized areas or zones with marked differences in permeability. Consequently, the leach solutions follow the course of least resistance. They percolate down through the coarse ore regions and bypass or barely wet areas that contain large amounts of fines or slimes. Effective use of marginal gold and silver resources by heap leaching required development of new methods to achieve more uniform size distribution when preparing ore heaps and better slime control during leaching. Early methods Agglomeration and balling of crushed ore to produce a porous and more uniform feed material for heap leaching is a viable method for treating clayey ores. Researchers from the US Bureau of Mines in Reno, NV began agglomeration pretreatment research in the mid-1970s for applications to and exploitation of these poor percolating feed materials. Little attention had been given to such methods before the Bureau's research. In 1905, T. C. Scrutton developed a unique technique for obtaining rapid vat leaching of a clayey ore where the gold was finely disseminated. His technique consisted of rolling the ore down a chute inclined at 60° to form agglomerates or balls readily permeable by the cyanide solution. However, these agglomerates lacked rigidity. And, to ensure good percolation leaching and washing, they could not be bedded in layers more than 1 m (3 ft) deep. If this depth was exceeded, it is difficult to obtain uniform leaching and washing. This results in reduced gold recovery. Shepard and others in 1937 studied the addition of lime and carbon dioxide or calcium carbonate to gold-bearing tailings to form agglomerates suitable for vat leaching. Satisfactory percolation flow rates were achieved in 90 g (3 oz) scale experiments, but the reagent requirements were cost prohibitive. This paper describes the Darwin Silver Recovery project, located 66 km (40 miles) outside of Lone Pine, near Darwin, Inyo County, California. A lead-zinc mine and a flotation concentrator were operated there from 1945 to 1957. By the time the mine was shut down, 1.53 Tg (1.69 million short tons) of tailings had been stored in ponds. An average silver assay of 47 mg/kg (1.38 troy oz/st) of tailings stimulated interest for commercial silver recovery. A heap leach process was developed in 1981 at the Tucson Research Center of Anaconda Minerals Company, a division of Atlantic Richfield Company. Agglomeration techniques were used on the ore since the fine grind did not allow direct heap leaching. Lime and cement were required as binders, Early laboratory tests showed that recoveries equal to those from an agitated leach could be achieved at lower capital and operating costs. Laboratory tests determined cyanide requirements, lime and cement usages, and percolation or leach rates, as well as confirming that a zinc precipitation step could recover the silver from the leach solution.

"Located on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River at Pointe Noire, Quebec are the agglomeration and ship-ping facilities of the Wabush Mines complex. Here, the specular hematite concentrate from the Scully Mine is received for further processing. Modern facilities for handling the ore, either to the 1plant or to stockpile, provide quick and efficient operation of the ore receiving station. Physical preparation of the ore for balling is accomplished with regrind ball mills, filters, bentonite crushing and drying facilities, pumps and related conveying circuits. Rotating table feeders deliver the reground and de-watered ore from storage bins to balling drums, where green ball or green pellet formation is achieved. The green balls are then conveyed to the indurating section. Three Dravo-Lurgi travelling grates, producing a total of 6,000,000 long dry tons of pellets per year, are used in the indurating phase of the operation. These grates, having 38 windboxes and firing at a temperature of 2,500°F, harden the pellets for shipment to various blast furnaces throughout the world."

The Haile Gold Mine was the largest gold producer east of the Mississippi River prior to 1942. It is currently the only producing gold mine in the Southeastern United States. Current development involves the mining and heap leaching of some 1000 TPD. Carbon is employed as a recovery medium. Due to its clayey nature and excessive fines in the oxide ore, agglomeration using Portland cement is required prior to leaching. The ore ranges in screen size from two inches to -200 mesh. The agglomerating step combined with certain other conditions has enabled Piedmont Mining Company to achieve recoveries of 90%.

Metallurgically, the term agglomeration is used to describe processes whose goal is to form balls, briquettes, nodules, flakes, or other sized shaped particles from loose, usually fine, incoherent particles. In practice it includes such varying processes as the briquetting of coal dust and other substances, the balling and induration (heating) of such nonmetallics as cement, fluorspar, lightweight aggregates, etc. It includes such widely used processes as the sintering of nonferrous concentrates, such as those copper, lead, zinc, etc. The agglomeration of specific nonferrous metal concentrates is discussed in detail in the section of this handbook devoted to that particular metal. Agglomeration processes are of particular value to the iron and steel industry where the nature of the primary reduction process, the blast furnace, requires for best results a burden essentially free of fines. This is a change that has taken place since about 1960. Prior to that time many fine unsized ores were fed to the furnace. The development of the pelletizing process gave to the industry a chemically controlled closely sized product that increased the produc¬tion rate and reduced the costs so much that unsized fines are seldom used in modem furnaces. Steel plants produce many fine sized waste products such as fine dust (fine ore coke and gangue) and mill scale. These products, which have a valuable iron content, are usually sin¬tered directly at the plant for reuse. Fine sized ore concentrates are usually pelletized at the mine and shipped as pellets to the steel plant. Common practice in some areas producing natural high grade ores is to screen the ore at the mine to about 3/8 in. The oversize is shipped "as is" and constitutes blast furnace feed. The / in. may be shipped to the steel plant where it may be sintered or otherwise agglomerated. At some mines the fines may be pelletizied prior to shipment. With the development of large ocean ore carriers, and with the transportation of slurried concentrates or fines, a trend has developed of constructing large pelletizing plants or other types of agglomeration plants near large consumption centers (i.e., in the Netherlands or Japan) where ores of many types are brought together, ground if necessary, blended, and agglomerated. As an indication of tonnages of agglomerated materials produced, for iron materials alone (the largest share of the total) production in 1970 in the U.S. was Million gross ton Sinter 40.7 Pellets 43.1 Briquettes, nodules, & others 0.1 Total 83.9 During the 1960s, U.S. production of sinter rose from 40.3 million gross tons in 1961 to a high of 48.7 million in 1964, then settled back to almost the 1961 figure in 1970. Worldwide, sinter production in 1966 was estimated at 340 million mt (mainly in Europe, Russia, Japan, and the U.S.) and pellet produc¬tion the same year at 64 mt (primarily Canada and the U.S.). World pellet production capacity rose to 200 million tons in 1976.

Flotation was introduced in phosphate rock processing in the late twenties and since then it has been an important part of the concentration process. More than two thirds of the rock produced in Florida is upgraded by the flotation process. Since no crushing or milling steps are involved in the material preparation, the flotation plant feed is coarser than in most other mineral flotation systems. During hydraulic processing of the rock, particles in the size range of -14, +150 mesh constitute the flotation feed. This size fraction is further classified by hydraulic sizers, stationary screens and vibrating screens into a coarse (-14, +35 mesh) and a fine (-35, +150 mesh) flotation feed. The flotation techniques for concentrating the fine feed as practiced by the Florida Phosphate producers have been standardized over the years, however, methods for upgrading the coarse feed differ from plant to plant. Binders are important raw materials in the iron ore pelletizing process. The bentonite, most usual, has been used in plants of this process since the forties due to its good performance in the agglomeration of ultrafine ore, although the silicon content in bentonite impairs the total iron content of the pellet, reducing its market value. This article studies the bentonite consumption reduction and improvement of the chemical quality of pellets by the addition of an organic binder in the productive process of Vale Vargem Grande pelletizing plant. By evaluation of variables as, drop test of green pellet, green pellet, dry pellet and fired pellet compressive strength tests, tumble index, percentage fraction of lower than 5 mm and total iron content in fired pellets, it was possible to approve the technical availability of the organic binder auxiliary in Vargem Grande pelletizing process. Nonetheless the positive influence of total iron content increase due to the reduction of bentonite consumption, it could also verify no impact on the physical quality of the pellets under the same production rhythm, approving once again the use of organic binders in pelletizing process.

Mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP) is a nickel intermediate product that has economical benefits to downstream leaching of lateritic marginal ores. Usually, this product is subsequently processed and refined to produce nickel by hydrometallurgy, but an alternative route can be made integrating hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy. Assessing the overall consumption of ferroalloys to obtain stainless steel, as an increasing practice performed in China, the synergy of nickel extraction from laterites by leaching and precipitation asMHP with the production ofMHP agglomerates applied as rawmaterial to furnaces of ferronickel production is a very attractive practice. This work aims to further the technological development of an agglomerated product feasible to hydro-pyro integration. The agglomeration experiments were performed by traditional pelletizing (firing the pellets) and cold bonded pelletizing (aging the pellets by appropriate stocking). Appropriate compositionswere prepared withMHP, additives and binders for each of these routes. A specific study of binder composition was made to find an adequate melting point. The produced pellets were tested to prove their properties by crushing strength tests. The standardization applied to iron ore was followed. The best result of crushing strength was 98.52 daN/pellet. The agglomerates with approved crushing strength for use in electric furnaces were smelted to produce alloys containing nickel; the agglomerates were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The alloy obtained was metallic ferronickel with sulphide precipitates. Therefore, MHP pellets can be precursors of nickel alloys, which have to be refined to obtain the desirable composition.

Agglomeration of fine mineral particles is an important step in heap leaching processes employed for a cost-effective hydrometallurgical extraction of value metals from low-grade ores. In this study, the effect of acidic binder composition and feed ore particle size on binder dosage requirement and isothermal, batch agglomeration behavior of siliceous goethite nickel laterite has been investigated. Agglomeration tests performed with tap water and 30, 44 and 98% w/w H2SO4 solutions as binders revealed the key role of binder formulation in controlling ore particle wettability, nucleation and granule growth behavior. Both lower binder acid content and higher dosage led to greater wetting, nucleation and granule growth rates. Variation of feed ore fine/coarse particles? mass ratio dramatically impacted on binder dosage requirement for effective particle wetting, nucleation, and growth agglomeration behavior. Increasing fine (-150 µm) fraction mass content in a -2 mm feed ore, led to higher binder dosage requirement and enhanced nucleation, however the overall agglomeration rate/granule size growth decreased. In contrast, the presence of coarse (5 ? 15 mm) particles in feed ore led to (i) lower binder dosage requirement, (ii) enhanced initial agglomerate size growth rate, and (iii) reduced coalescence. For dry agglomerates of similar sizes, competent coarser feed particles led to remarkably higher compressive strength than did finer feed particles. Microstructure analyses indicated that the granules containing coarser particles exhibited a distinctive, competent core/shell (fines) structure which led to their structural reinforcement. The appropriation of the findings for optimizing agglomeration behavior for enhanced heap leaching of complex, low grade laterite ores are discussed in this context.

Heap leaching efficiency is reduced by poor solution flow characteristics (channeling and ponding), which result from fines migration. Agglomeration of the ore can immobilize fines, but copper leaching requires an acid-resistant binder to stabilize the agglomerates. Until now, there has not been a satisfactory way to evaluate whether a binder was effective, other than squeezing a handful to see if it “feels right”. We have developed procedures to quantitatively determine whether a binder gives good performance in an acidic solution, and have identified several binders that will be suitable for copper heap leaching.

Agglomeration for Copper Heap Leaching Agglomeration of ore is a method which can be used to eliminate the migration of fine grained particles throughout a leach heap. Without agglomeration, fine ore particles are able to migration within the heap, clogging flow channels and producing large areas where access of the solution is poor. In order to gain the benefits of agglomeration and improve agglomerate strength even further in copper heap leaching, an economical, acid-resistant binder is needed. However, most binders have been used without any systematic reasoning. A set of novel testing methods were developed, including a soak test, percolation flooded columns, and larger long-term leach columns. The soak test compares the degree of breakdown when agglomerates are subjected to an acidic environment. While the percolation flooded columns and larger long-term leach columns evaluate the flow of leach solution throughout the ore bed. Systematic studies have been completed on a wide range of binders using these novel testing procedures. It was found that for a low grade chalcocite ore, which was rich in silica, from a southwest US mine, polyacrylamides reduced the fines migration the best in the novel soak test. The non-ionic binder, in particular, was found to reduce fines migration as much as 93 per cent. Several of the binders tested were shown to increase the hydraulic conductivities of the agglomerated ore up to 2.5 mm/sec, compared to a hydraulic conductivity of only 0.25 mm/sec when no binder was used. These binders also prevented 'slumping' of the ore, which indicates a decrease in breakdown of the agglomerates. The use of a binder also showed no interference with leaching reactions in long-term leaching experiments.
