The response of 174 domestic water supplies to longwall mining of the Pittsburgh coal seam was compared to various physical parameters. Sixty-four percent of domestic water supplies returned to service without the need for intervention, while thirty six percent required intervention to reestablish a suitable water supply. Domestic well response is strongly correlated with the topographic setting. Valley wells showed the least effect while hilltop wells showed the greatest effect. Well response was also found to be correlated to the location of the well above the mining with greater effects observed in zones of surface tension and compression, and fewer effects in zones which are stress neutral. Ground water supplies remained unaffected or were re¬established at 149 of 150 sites, indicating that ground water resources remain available to domestic wells after mining. Results of this study support the stress-relief model of ground water flow in the Northern Appalachian Basin. Longwall mining's effect on this system is to locally increase fracture connectivity in the near surface zone. This may shift the zones of saturated fractures to greater depths beneath hilltops and hillsides, and increase recharge and storage in valleys. General trends in well response are predict¬able utilizing the stress relief conceptual model, the topographic setting of the water sources, and their location over the mine.

7.1 INTRODUCTION Subsidence measurements include surveys of surface and sub- surface movements and measurements and monitoring of surface structural damages. In this chapter the most commonly employed methods are discussed. 7.2 MEASUREMENT OF SURFACE MOVEMENT Surface movements involve two basic components, subsidence and displacement. The other five components (i.e., slope, curvature, strain, twisting, and shearing) are derived from the two basic components. Since all measurements are geometrical, they can be measured by common surveying techniques. 7.2.1 MONUMENTS The first step is to select the types of monuments or surveying stations. Various types of monuments have been employed. The simplest one is a paint mark on the pavement or concrete slab, although this should be discouraged because it is easily affected by artificial or environmental factors. Others use steel or wooden rods, 2 to 3 in. in diameter or square by 2 to 5 ft long, driven all the way down, flush with the ground. Both types of-monuments have no provision for frozen ground heave and both are tampered with easily. A more elaborate type is shown in Fig. 7.1 (O'Rourke et al., 1982). A rebar or iron pipe, 2 in. in diameter by 6 ft long is driven down to nearly flush with ground surface. The top 4-ft section of the hole around the pipe is enlarged to 1 ft in diameter and grouted with concrete. The most sophisticated type of monument is shown in Fig. 7.2 (Conroy and Gyannaty, 1983a). It consists of two hollow steel pipes. The inner I-in. pipe, 10 ft. long is enclosed by a 2-in. pipe at the upper 5-ft. interval. The gap between pipes is filled with foam to isolate the inner pipe from external environmental effects. The bottom of the inner pipe can either remain open or be sealed with a cap, depending on whether the ground is dry or wet. 7.2.2 MONUMENT ARRANGEMENT AND SURVEY LINES The monuments are installed strategically to form survey lines. Three basic types of monument arrangements are shown in Fig. 7.3. Figs. 7.3a and 7.3b are for single and multiple panels respectively; Fig. 7.3~ is mainly for research purposes with multiple survey lines both in longitudinal and transverse directions. This is extremely useful for defining the distributions of ground deformation, as shown in Figs. 2.10 and 2.11. Basically there are two types of survey lines: the whole basin survey line which extends across the panel width or length (e.g., lines R, R, in Fig. 7.3 a&b), and the half basin survey line which covers approximately half of the panel width or length (e.g., lines R, F in Fig. 7.3 &b). Survey lines are generally straight and linear. They should be located on the major crosssections of the subsidence basin. Survey lines must extend beyond the edge of the opening for a sufficient distance so that the edges of the subsidence basin can be determined accurately. The minimum distance from the edge of the opening must be [ ] where h = mining depth, [ ] = angle of draw, and [ ] = 5 to 7 times monument spacing for whole basin surveys, or 8 to 10 times the monument spacing for half basin surveys. There must be at least two controlling monuments at each end of each survey line. Controlling monuments must be located beyond the influence of underground mining. The spacing of the monuments ranges from 15 to 200 ft. The UK National Coal Board (NCB, 1975) recommended a spacing equivalent to 0.20 of the mining depth. Peng and Geng (1982) recommended that the maximum monument spacing be dependent on mining depths as follows:

Antamina is a large open-pit copper and zinc mine located within the Central Andes of Northern Peru at an altitude of 4300 masl. The facilities are situated within the headwaters of several watersheds, within the Amazon basin. Nearby villages rely heavily on springs and streams for drinking and irrigation water. The principle source of baseflow during the dry season is from Cretaceous karstic limestone aquifers. Antamina will produce nearly 1.4 billion tonnes of waste rock over its mine life. Finding suitable sites for storing large volumes of waste rock is often a challenging task – especially in karstic, alpine terrain. Detailed hydrogeological investigations are essential for delineating the karstic hydrogeologic watersheds associated with the proposed waste facilities, which are often very different than topographic (hydrologic) watersheds. Contamination vulnerability mapping at Antamina consisted of geological and karst mapping, geophysical surveys, geochemical testing, dye-tracer studies, drilling and aquifer testing. Detailed mapping followed by dye-tracer studies proved to be the most cost-effective methods for characterizing the karst aquifer systems. The results were used to optimize waste rock management at the site to minimize potential impacts on groundwater resources.

This paper describes the recent application of gasketed, precast concrete segmental lining design that has improved tunneling productivity and quality. The speci?c segment arrangement includes: six-piece ring with equal 60 degree gasketed segments, juxtaposed key and counter-key segments, trapezoidal and parallelogram shaped segments, inclined and skewed radial joints and plastic circumferential joint connectors. This allows rapid, but accurate ring erection, reducing mine cycle times. The design avoids cruciform joints, minimizes potential gasket damage and eliminates the need for separate left and right ring molds. The implementation on the Los Angeles ECIS and NEIS sewer projects is described.

The Mojave Desert province is comprised of a diverse group of mountains that range in elevation from about 2,000' (600 m) to 3,000' (900 m), separated by tracts of alluvial cover. The province is bounded on the southwest by the San Andreas fault, on the north by the Garlock fault, on the east by the Death Valley- Granite Mountains fault. Rocks preserved in the Mojave Desert Province collectively record a rich assemblage of Precambrian crystalline basement' ranging in age from ca. 1.8 to 1.35 Ga, upper Precambrian and Paleozoic Cordilleran miogeoclinal sediments and platform rocks, Mesozoic backarc and interarc shallow marine and continental sequences, locally emplaced Permian- Triassic syenitic plutons, extruded hypabyssal volcanic rocks of the ?Jurassic "Sidewinder Volcanic Series," and regionally intruded late Mesozoic granitoid batholithic rocks (Dokka et al., 1988). The Mojave block apparently was a high-standing element for much of the early Tertiary, with strata of Late Cretaceous or early Tertiary age preserved only on its margins. Beginning about in the late Oligocene an intense episode of regional north-south extension was developed in a roughly east- west trending belt that traversed the central part of the province. This extensional belt has been termed the Mojave Extensional Belt. The extensional regime lasted from about 22-17 Ma, and is generally divided into two phases. The first, from about 22-20 Ma records intense extension via the activity of crustal-scale, simple shear, low- angle normal faults, high-angle normal faults, and extensional fracturing, along with intrusion of intermediate to silicic volcanic rocks, including episodes of explosive volcanic activity. The Peach Springs Tuff, a major regional marker unit that extends across the Mojave from Arizona to about Barstow, forms an effective stratigraphic lid on the extensional interval, (i.e., is not rotated) and is dated isotopically at about 18.5 Ma. The extensional episode was followed by an interval of high- angle normal faulting and dike emplacement from about 19 to 17 Ma, and was accompanied by at least local uplift and volcanism. Most volcaniclastic and epiclastic sedimentary units of the central Mojave block post-date the interval of extension and normal faulting, and occur as a complex of marginal alluvial and more interior lacustrine facies that formed as recently as late Miocene (ca 13 Ma). Local sequences (e.g., Lava Mountains) record deposition up to about 8 Ma, but there appears to be a regional "gap" from then until at least local successions record Pleistocene deposition. Magnetic and isotopic age studies indicate a complex history of crustal rotations, distributed across a number of discrete domains, during the past 10 Ma. Some of the youngest volcanic and geomorphic features apparently developed at "holes" formed at the edges of rotated blocks.

The opportunity for an exploration geologist to follow a successful exploration project through the feasibility, financing, construction, development, and exploitation phase is rare. In addition, it is not often that the exploration geologist can be present during the mining of a deposit to explain why certain actions were taken or interpretations made, and to find out how these interpretations turned out in actuality. At the Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos mine in New South Wales, Australia, mining has been- in progress for seven years and the writer of this chapter has been intimately associated with the project during the five years of exploration and seven years of exploitation. The Woodsreef mine has had major production problems, the majority of which have stemmed from the unique characteristics of the ore body and fiber. Because of the latter feature, much research has been undertaken by Woods- reef and other scientific organizations in Australia, England, and Canada regarding the Woodsreef fiber. The answers to some of the problems have negated some accepted concepts of asbestos ore milling and led to the development of new techniques. Some of these new techniques include the adoption of microscopic fiber counts as a routine procedure, the modification of accepted evaluation procedures, the development of new machines for dedusting fibers, and the recognition of a fiber with a unique milling behavior pattern and, possibly, properties. The problems experienced can be broadly divided into those associated with the geology and the physical properties of the fiber. It is possible that the same features may manifest themselves in other deposits around the world, and if they can be recognized during the exploration stages, a feasiblity evaluation may be just a little closer to the actual. The Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos deposit (latitude 30°24' S, longitude 150°44' E) is located 80 km north of Tamworth, NSW, Australia. The mine has been in production for six years and has a present scheduled mining rate of 33.11 Mt/y. An eight rock line mill treats an average of 7000 t/day, after beneficiation, and yields fiber grades in the range of group 4 to group 6 with some floats. The estimated re- serves of 30.56 Mt, with an ore to waste ratio of 1:3.0, are contained in two main zones that are designated the North and South zones. Mining started in the South Zone in 1972 and then, be- cause of the higher ore value, moved to the North Zone in 1975. Presently, there are two distinct open cuts referred to as the South and North pits that will eventually be worked together. The Woodsreef mine is owned by Woodsreef Mines Ltd. and is operated by Chrysotile Corp. of Australia Pty. Ltd., and is one of only two producing asbestos mines in Australia. The second mine is at Baryulgil, (latitude 29°13' S, longitude 152°37' E), and is operated by a subsidiary of Woodsreef Mines Ltd. This operation produces about 500 t/y for a captive market. An exploration program is being conducted in the area surrounding this small producer with a significant degree of success. The concepts developed during the exploitation of the Woodsreef deposit are being incorporated in the evaluation of the Baryulgil area, and if the Baryulgil deposit proves to be eco- nomic it is hoped that this approach will eliminate some of the major crises that have beset the production at Woodsreef during the first four years of operation. In this study, with the primary goal of capturing ongoing digital transformation and automation impacts on the mining industry and its workforce, we conduct several interviews with mining industry experts in the United States and analyze our survey reports qualitatively and quantitatively through exploratory analysis. After the interpretation of the insights of industry experts, we proceed to generate a personalized and customized data analysis through a novel metric based on skills, knowledge, competencies and occupational requirements, which quantifies the job similarities for occupations in the mining industry based on the publicly available database of the U.S. Department of Labor. We use text analytics to tokenize and classify the interviews to capture a better understanding of major response categories. The temporal analysis shows that the critical competency needs in the data science and autonomy category increases from 28 percent in current demands to 43 percent. In defining our metric, we also calculate Kullback–Leibler (KL) divergence for each job profile that enables determining whether and to what extent that job is transitionary in our test set based on the mean, standard deviation and kurtosis of each job of interest. Our analysis reveals that the in-group job transitions are significantly easier than the between-group transitions, proving our initial assumptions and common sense. The generated heat maps provide the opportunity to present the gap between the current job and desired job profiles that provide feasible career change options, among others, offering individualized career paths for job seekers and promoting potential job transitions. Through the collection of industry-specific individual employee data, the AI system is envisaged to continue to learn as end users engage with the system, thus creating a central data hub specifically for the future workforce in the mining industry. Although the study has limitations on generalizability for qualitative assessments, it presents itself as a valuable application of how qualitative and quantitative approaches could be of value for future worker training in the mining sector.

The Tolt Pipeline No. 2, West Snoqualmie Valley project, is part of a water supply project linking the Tolt reservoir in East King County to the City of Seattle through a nominal 2.13 m (7-ft) inside diameter conveyance. Receipt of the National, 2002Microtunnel Award provided recognition of the many challenges overcome by this project. Baseline conditions revealed in the Geotechnical Documentation included over-consolidated glacial deposits, landslide and alluvial deposits, artesian water, boulders up to 36-in in diameter, logs, heaving sands, and liquefiable soils beneath the river. Schedule constraints associated with setting the shafts in the floodplain of a salmon bearing river and the fickle performance of the river during those times it was not supposed to flood added to the challenge.

The objective of this U.S. Bureau of Mines investigation was to characterize overburden response due to longwall mining. Subsurface strata and surface deformations were monitored during the mining of two adjacent, 900 ft wide longwall panels in southeastern Ohio. The panels were separated by a five entry, four pillar system (about 350 ft wide). The overburden thickness in the study area ranged from 214 to 280 ft, and the extraction thickness averaged 70 in. To delineate the geology of the overburden, six coreholes were drilled along a profile line extending across the two longwall panels. Multi-point borehole extensometers (MPBX) with eight-anchors were installed in six boreholes to measure subsurface displacements. The MPBX units were continuously monitored using a data logger. During the mining of the first panel, displacement occurred in a radiating pattern beginning just above the extracted area in the center of the panel and extending upward and outward towards the surface and margins of the panel. Overburden deformation did not project over the gate road entries. During the mining of the second panel, the MPBX's showed almost simultaneous displacement, indicating that the overburden began to move as a whole unit. Again, overburden deformation was confined to the immediate panel area. At both panels, overburden movement began when the longwall face was approximately 55 ft beyond the line of MPBX boreholes. Moreover, all ground movement was complete when the longwall face was approximately 200 ft beyond the line of MPBX boreholes. This paper discusses the results of the study and identifies the characteristics of overburden deformation.

Subsidence profiles over Saskatchewan potash mines exhibit forms which cannot be explained by existing subsidence models. The subsidence is affected by bridging of competent rocks. A modification of the theory can explain the observed displacement of subsidence profiles due to bridging. An unusual shallow secondary subsidence trough has been observed extending two to three kilometers outside the primary subsidence. The secondary subsidence is explained as an elastic compression inresponse to a drop in pore water pressure in the vicinity of the caving zone. The concept of pore water pressure may lead to a safe extraction limit for Saskatchewan mines.

The Bureau of Mines' Denver Research Center initiated a subsidence research program in 1978. The short ten goals of the program were to determine practical methods and equipment for measuring subsidence and demonstrate these methods by monitoring subsidence at several mines having mining, geologic and topographic variables typical of those encountered in the western United States. Data from the monitoring program would be supplied to cooperating mining companies and used by the Bureau to accomplish the long term objective of developing and validating subsidence prediction techniques applicable to mines in the West. Subsidence monitoring is being conducted at five mines in Colorado and Utah with substantially different mine plans, mining methods, depths of cover, and topography. The monitoring procedures used at each site are similar and include designing the monitoring network layout, installing the subsidence monuments, initial and periodic surveying of the monuments, and processing the survey data. The network layout, surveying methods, and types of monuments vary according to the conditions at the individual sites and the type of data being collected.

The recognition of perlite as a distinct volcanic glass, and of the arcuate fractures that often characterize these natural glasses, dates back at least to the late 19th century and perhaps into the 18th century (Howell, 1974). Some authors suggest that recognition of perlite dates considerably further into antiquity, perhaps to the 3rd century BC (Caley and Richards, 1956). Most recent definitions identify perlite by the presence of vit¬reous, pearly luster and by the presence of characteristic concentric or arcuate perlitic fractures. As discussed more fully below, arcuate fractures in perlite need not be megascopic. The textures of perlite which commonly occur in deposits range from dense to highly vesiculated to pumice-like. Thus, the classical definition of perlite is descriptively restrictive compared to the natural range of textures and neglects to address the issues of genetic origin and geologic occurrence. In spite of the petrological usage of the term perlite, the in¬troduction of expanded perlite aggregate into industrial markets caused the term to be applied as well to the lightweight, cellular aggregate that is produced through the rapid thermal expansion of milled perlite ore. Perlite is distinguished petrologically from other natural glasses by a silicic or rhyolitic composition by the presence of 2 to 5 wt% total chemical water held within the glass structure and often by the presence of pearly luster and onionskin-like perlitic fractures. Worldwide, occurrences are associated with Tertiary through early to middle Quaternary volcanics and with the glassy portions of silicic domes and flows, with vitric tephra, with the glassy chill margins of dikes and sills, and with the glassy portions of welded ash flow tuffs. Less commonly, perlite is reported in association with the glassy portions of volcanic plugs and lacco¬liths. The perlite carapaces that partially or fully comprise extru¬sive domes and flows are often thick and areally extensive, and thus provide commercially attractive targets for low cost open pit mining. Perlite tuffs and tephras are also important commercial sources. Mining costs are minimized by open pit quarrying and by either bulldozer ripping or blasting. Crushing and sizing facilities are generally close to the pits. Due to the low weight and large volume of expanded perlite, unexpanded perlite that has been crushed and sized is usually shipped nationwide directly to local markets where it is expanded and processed for distribution to end users. The vast majority of international trade is in unexpanded perlite. In the United States, the evolution of the expanded perlite industry can be traced to the late 1930s and early 1940s when expanded perlite aggregate was introduced into gypsum plaster and concrete markets as a substitute for vermiculite (Schundler, Jr., oral communication, 1991) and was promoted for use in a much broader spectrum of products (Howell, 1974). By the early 1950s, end user markets were well established and small expanders were numerous east of the Mississippi River. Today, mining and expan¬sion is undertaken throughout the world. Worldwide production of perlite is dominated by the former Soviet republics, the United States, and Greece. Total worldwide production of processed perlite during 1990 is estimated at roughly 1 778 000 tons (Davis, 1991). The physical properties of expanded perlite that give this prod¬uct unique commercial value include: low bulk density, chemical inertness, high insulating ability, nonflammability and fire resis¬tance, and its ability to retain water. These and other physical properties give expanded perlite value in such uses as: lightweight acoustical and thermal insulating aggregate; component in plaster, insulating cements and lightweight concrete; loose fill insulation; as aggregate in horticultural applications; and in milled form as filter aid. In the United States and Europe, the largest end use is within building construction products.

Alumina hydroxides such as gibbsite (Al(OH)3) and boehmite (AlOOH) are precursors of many types of alumina that find important industrial applications. The thermal decomposition of AlOOH, which is a more energy saving precursor compared to gibbsite, gives rise to the formation of ?-, d-, ?- and a-aluminas that are used for the production of catalysts. The applications of the aluminas are governed by their properties that are a function of the precursor material and its microstructure. The microstructure in turn is a factor of the method and conditions applied, as well as, in the case of soft chemical processes, on the anions present. Towards these ends, this study was focused on the effect of different anions on the physicochemical characteristics of the alumina hydroxides precipitated in the first 5 minutes after the perturbation of the stability of a supersaturated sodium aluminate solution (Bayer liquor).

The Riverside Badlands Tunnel segment of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California’s Inland Feeder Project, was lined with a segmented concrete primary lining and a welded steel final lining with the annulus filled with Low-Density Cellular Concrete (really a grout). The paper describes a numerical modeling technique that was developed to determine safe grout placement procedures to avoid pipe flotation, and shows the relationship between flotation and the rheology of the liquid grout. Design details of the steel liners are often not well suited to grout placement, and recommendations are given on how to improve this.

INTRODUCTION The requirements of mine ventilation demand the constant attention of the mine operator. Just as the physical mine structure changes with time, the ventilation requirements of a particular mine change considerably from season to season and even from day to day. No ventilation system can remain adequate indefinitely; and all systems require monitoring and adjustments to achieve proper ventilation. Instead of being given fore- thought and planning, mine-ventilation systems too of- ten are erected hastily, merely to correct an already un- healthy situation. The usual result is an inefficient and costly system that, in some instances, may prove in- effective in providing fresh air to the point of need. The ventilation of mines is a combination of both art and science. The fluid that must be moved is in- visible; its properties change drastically with temperature, barometric pressure, and humidity; and the methods of measurement are not precise. In part, ventilation engineering must rely upon the art of good industrial ventilation experience and sometimes even the trial-and- error method. However, the properties of air can be determined with relatively inexpensive equipment; with some care, measurement accuracies within 5% of the actual values can be obtained. Thus the art of ventilation gradually is being supplanted by improved engineering practices. Although the direction of flow and the volume may not be predicted correctly by airflow equations in every situation, it is better to try to predict the behavior of a given ventilation before installation than to proceed blindly with a system design. When used with the discretion that comes from education and experience, the basic laws of ventilation can provide sub-stantial insight into the design of an air-handling system; and they can prevent wasteful or even dangerous designs from being installed. Since the mine operators who read this text will have varying amounts of exposure to ventilation theory, the basic laws of airflow and of mechanical ventilation are presented in the first section. The emphasis has been placed on the interpretation and use of fan characteristic curves that are supplied by fan manufacturers. Considerable information can be obtained from these fan curves, particularly when they are used with a graphic model of the mine, drift, or duct in which the fan or fans are to be installed. A few minutes spent comparing the various characteristic curves can help the designer obtain the correct fan for the job. However, the under- standing of a few fundamentals is necessary; and this text has been prepared to provide ample and understandable information in a "how-to" style. In subsequent sections of this text, more down-to- earth subjects will be covered, including the problems of air recirculation, relative merits of installing fans in series or in parallel, expected maintenance requirements (vibration, lubrication intervals, etc.), fan noise and some remedies, effect of an inlet bell on the fan per- formance, basic air-measurement techniques and equipment, and similar miscellaneous items. Although this text is not intended to be a comprehensive bible of mine ventilation, it has been prepared as a guide that provides some useful information to individuals responsible for the quality of the underground environment. Every person working underground is en- titled to the safest environment that can be provided within the limitations of existing technology and at a reasonable cost. "The “Reiche Zeche” mine in Freiberg, Germany, a 600-year-old lead-zinc-silver mine with extensive open mine workings, experiences severe ventilation losses due to leakage. Much air leaks into abandoned workings, decreasing the airflow available to active working areas. Usually, this leakage occurs in remote areas that lack transportation infrastructure like roadways or rail, making it difficult to haul construction materials to the sites to erect passive ventilation controls such as stoppings, regulators and seals. Transportation distances make it impractical to hand carry traditional construction materials, such as bricks and concrete. Alternative materials, such as brattice, foaming polymers, concrete canvas, and some innovative ventilation control designs have been investigated for this purpose. The suitability of the materials investigated depends on many factors including the pressure it can withstand, the ease of transportation, and workability. Impacts of mine water must be considered, as the Reiche Zeche is below drainage and experiences significant inflow of water. Researchers must consider the effects water inundation as well as how the stopping construction material reacts to being exposed to acidic mine water. INTRODUCTION Problem Statement Mining in the area around Freiberg, Germany began in the 12th century. The mine is used for research, mining engineering education, tourism and air conditioning for a local hospital. The first records of mining in the Reiche Zeche are from around 1384. Due to the strength and competency of the host rock, many of the oldest workings still stand and remain open today, although they may not be accessible. Reiche Zeche also connects to several other, closed mines in the area that are largely unmapped. This allows air to leak into neighboring mines, reducing the air available to ventilate to the working areas of Reiche Zeche. In order to improve ventilation efficiency, it is necessary to control the ventilation and reduce leakage by constructing seals, stoppings and regulators. A challenge with building traditional seals and stoppings in the Reiche Zeche is that the old workings lack transportation pathways or rails. Also, the lack of compressed air, water or electricity makes it difficult to operate power tools and drills. This means that construction materials must be hand carried – some over distances of several kilometers. Figure 1 shows a typical drift in the Reiche Zeche. Researchers investigated using lighter, more easily transportable materials including concrete canvas, expanding polyurethane and polyurea foams, and brattice. The applicability and utility of these materials depends on a variety of factors including the ventilation air pressure, chemical resistance to acidic and mineral-laden mine waters, ease of transport, and ease of construction. Stoppings and seals must be substantially constructed so that they remain tight and do not require maintenance. It is also important to consider the toxicity of the construction materials in case of a mine fire."

"INTRODUCTIONThe Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT), designed and constructed by Bouygues Civil Works Florida between 2009 and 2014, was a Public Private Partnership between the Miami Access Tunnel Concessionaire, Florida Department of Transport, Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami. The project comprises dual 11.3m internal diameter, 1.27km long, twin lane road tunnels running between Watson and Dodge islands and under the main shipping channel in Biscayne Bay (Figure 1).The POMT was a unique project which embodied many technical firsts and involved the first large diameter tunnels constructed through Florida’s challenging sedimentary carbonate strata. At the outset, a comprehensive ground investigation was performed, using both conventional and less conventional investigation techniques, to characterise the highly heterogeneous ground conditions.The findings of the investigation had a major impact on the tunnelling methods, triggering a series of mitigation works to ensure that the tunnels could be excavated safely and effectively. The mitigations included modifications to the already designed Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), to facilitate an innovative excavation process, and a unique grouting campaign (Storry et. al. 2013a). The project was completed and opened to traffic in August, 2014 and has significantly alleviated traffic congestion in Downtown Miami.GEOLOGICAL CONTEXTThe geological conditions at the project site consist of carbonate sediments which can be divided into distinct geologic units; the Miami Limestone Formation (Layers S3, S4), the Fort Thompson Formation (Layer S5), the Anastasia Formation (Layer S6), the Key Largo Formation (Layer S7) and the Tamiami Formation (Layer S8). Multiple changes in sea level over a relatively short geologic time scale have resulted in a heterogeneous profile consisting of interbedded sedimentary rocks and sediments, which vary widely, both vertically and laterally (Figure 2)."

In recent years, considerable advances have taken place worldwide in the design and construction of first tunnel linings. With these advances, there is a tendency to move away from traditional support that includes heavy open profiles of rolled steel arches, to a lighter solution with the use of an optimized tubular steel cross section rib, and shotcrete reinforced with steel mesh and/or steel fibers, providing a continuous support (Lunardi, 1982). The development of tubular ribs has provided greater design options, increasing flexibility to engineers and contractors while providing a efficient and cost effective construction method. In this article, the authors describe numerical and experimental investigation on this problem, suggesting as a new first lining steel arch design approach by using tubular ribs cross section as new technical solution for first lining underground support.

An accurate, efficient and stable computation of the mill matrix function (eAt) is needed where mill matrix (A) is a real general matrix. Two important modeling cases in comminution where such need arises are: Heterogeneous comminution behavior of multi-component ores and ultra-fine grinding involving simultaneous attrition and fragmentation breakages. This paper presents the application of a novel splitting method in conjunction With similarity transformation technique in the form of "product formula" which is found to work in all cases and uses a most aggravating, yet interesting property of the matrix exponential in a restricted sense. Results are presented showing that this method can yield solution as accurate as those obtained With an analytical technique. The utility of this computational approach is demonstrated by parameter estimation analysis using a distributed component model in the liberation area through computer simulations.
