"When considering large-scale infrastructure projects worldwide special attention has to be paid to the large diameter tunnel construction projects that were successfully completed in the Southern Hemisphere. The projects that are highlighted in this paper are large-scale infrastructure projects in the sector of transport. In focus are four road tunnel projects that were constructed in Australia and New Zealand using mechanized tunnelling technology. The tunnel boring machines (TBMs) that were reliably applied to these four major projects all exceed the bore diameter of 12 meters. These TBMs are therefore in the range of large to very large diameter TBMs. The technology used demonstrates state of the art technology with tailored tunnelling technology adapted to the specific project demands. Two Double Shielded Hard Rock TBMs (Ø 12.35 meters) were used for the construction of the Clem Jones Tunnel in Brisbane crossing beneath the Brisbane River and these two machines have been reused for the excavation of a 4.3km long two-lane highway tunnel for Legacy Way in Brisbane creating a new traffic artery towards the city centre. Two EPB Shields (Ø 12.48 meters) excavated and lined the twin-tube road tunnel for the Brisbane Airport Link. Excavation diameters in excess of 14 meters, such as the Earth Pressure Balance Shield (Ø 14.41 meters) involved in the Waterview Connection Project in New Zealand, are understood in the tunnelling industry as very large diameters. The machine is customized to the requirements and subsurface conditions of Auckland. The paper spotlights the large to very large diameter TBMs that were used and focuses on the comprehensive solutions developed by the machine manufacturer to provide a system with benefits for the contractor especially for the Waterview Project. INTRODUCTION Extensive large-scale road infrastructure projects like the ones implemented in Brisbane (Australia) and currently under construction in Auckland (New Zealand) show the tendency of today’s infrastructure construction projects. Functional infrastructures need to be put in place to cope with the demand of mobility and flexibility of people living in cities and metropolises. Impact during construction work to people or environment has to be kept as low as possible to ensure the quality of life is not disrupted."

Since the discovery of 'potash in the Carlsbad area in 1926 and the start of mining operations in 1931, "first mining," operations have been carried on. This is a room and pillar system in which approximately 62% of the total ore is removed. Or the basis of ore reserves and rates of extraction, the life of the mine in the early; days was estimated to be well over 50 years, however, even with an increase by additional ore reserves, it became increasingly apparent that the life of the mine was being shortened considerably by increased production. Further cause for the shortening of mine life was due to the exceptionally weak back over the northeast quadrant of the main orebody which had .caved in on first mining up to a height of 8 feet. Thus, in 1953 the decision was' made to begin pillar pulling, also called, second mining or final mining, and in December of 1953 this program was started after much discussion.

"Himalayan geology poses the most challenging ground conditions almost anywhere in the world, one of the reasons thereof is their evolution as the youngest mountain chains. They are demonstratively rising faster than any mountain elsewhere. The composition is also younger, and consequently less well consolidated than the other older fold belts. This is consistent with the fact that they constitute one of the most active of the plate margin zones rising at a rate that is almost double the Andes, which is in turn three times that of the Alps. Thus, stress conditions (Magnitude and variations) can potentially be more extreme and adverse on a Himalayan tunneling project. Tunnel excavation under the Himalayan Mountains will pose significantly more challenges than an equal length and equal cover drive almost anywhere in the world. These in-depth-tunneling difficulties through high mountainous terrains have posed major challenges for application of traditional drill and blast (D&B) and NATM methods. Handling such adverse geology at any depth is always problematic and generally leads, if not adequately foreseen, to the significant tunneling delays. The author wants to highlight the challenges faced and on the spot solutions adopted while executing most prestigious 273Km long Udhampur –Srinagar- Baramula Rail Link Project (USBRL) in the Himalayas in the state of Jammu & Kashmir, India. The main focus of the paper is on main stretch of USBRL Project i.e. T-80 (India’s 2nd longest railway tunnel & 3rd longest in Asia) where the team of the author has recently completed a 11.2 Km long tunnel and where the train track has gone operational from Qazigund to Banihal. The construction of this stretch posed several challenges akin to highly adverse geological conditions. Executing on -the -spot solutions, the project has been completed successfully. 1.0 INTRODUCTION Construction of Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Broad gauge railway line is one of the Mega projects undertaken by Indian Railways to establish a dependable transportation in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. In engineering terminology, it is a challenging project negotiating breakthroughs against the complex Himalayan geology. The Project which has been operational over last 12 years , stretch by stretch, is in advance stage of construction . The purpose of the prestigious project is to connect the Kashmir valley to the mainland of the state of the country. On the date owing to the hurdles of the tuff terrain, the transport of this part is totally dependent on the surface transport, i.e., through a road which connects NH-1A from Delhi to Srinagar. The altitude of the region varies from 500.00 to 1700.00, ranging through Udhampur to Katra - Reasi –Sangaldan- Banihal-Quazikund-Ananthnag-Srinagar-and Baramulla. The main features of this project are its Pirpanjal Tunnel and T-48 & 49 tunnels which cover the maximum length of tunneling through thick hostile geological conditions, the total length being 138km. Details of Pirpanjal tunnels are shown in Figure-1."

Much of the mining industry in North America is in a crisis state. Host producers are operating at production levels well below capacity, some have been merged or sold, while others have been mothballed or closed permanently. For many of us still operating, the future is uncertain. Despite the many cutbacks and closures, there is still an abundant supply of minerals in the world market and there is almost no hope for any relief on price pressures on most mineral commodities in the near future. The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC)operates an iron ore mine, a concentrator and a pellet plant known as the Carol Project located in Labrador City, Newfoundland. This concentrator and the pellet plant have the annual capacity to produce 20 million and 10 million tons respectfully. A company owned and operated railway links this operation with the dock terminal facilities in Sept Iles, Quebec.

A bewildering number of continuous thickeners and clarifiers are used in mineral industries and other heavy industries. General types are: 1. Conventional Thickeners (Fig. 1). 2. Thickeners with Flocculating Feedwells (Fig. 2). 3. Solids Contactors (Fig. 2). 4. Tray Thickeners (Fig. 3). 5. Lamellas (Fig. 4). 6. Conventional Thickeners with Lamellas 7. High Flow, Fluid Bed Thickeners (Fig. 5). These units must be adapted to varied applications. They must provide operating flexibility to meet process needs. Such factors multiply the decisions which must be made prior to the selection of a thickener. The seven types of thickeners listed above, with their variations, share design concepts which limit their application and which can be used to evaluate their performance. Some of these are listed: 1. Feed velocities must be limited and/or controlled. 2. Natural or reagent flocculation is necessary. 3. Horizontal settling area is the basis for capacity. 4. Overflow velocities must be limited and/or controlled. 5. A controlled underflow is necessary. Applying these needs to the basic process concepts is thickener selection. The basic function of a thickener in the minerals industry is the separation of a thickened sludge containing fine solids from water. "The Cityringen project in Copenhagen, Denmark will form a new circular line in the city center and will consist of 21 new stations (17 + four transfer stations) and approximately 31 km (19 miles) of earth pressure balance (EPB) twin-bored tunnels.The new tunnels passed under the historical building of Magasin du Nord, McDonald’s and two pubs in the heart of the city with a minimum cover of about 4 m (13 ft).To minimize the movements, a complex system of compensation grouting and jet grouting soil treatment was performed. A detailed action plan between the parties involved allowed coping with the critical tunnel boring machine’s (TBM) successful passage.The Cityringen is an extension of the existing metro line underground Copenhagen and will include the City Circle Line, 15 km (9.5 miles) of twin tunnels looping around the city. The City Circle Line will form a new circular track inside the city center and will intersect the existing M1 and M2 lines at Kongens Nytorv and Frederiksberg stations, as well as suburban train services at København H, Østerport and Nørrebro. It will extend the Metro network to the Nørrebro, Østerbro areas and the central station at København H (Fig.1). The two new lines M3 and M4 will run on the same tracks, but the M3 will be a circle route running around the entire line, whereas the M4 will drive from the station to the north side of the city.The €1.5 billion design-build contract was awarded by Metroselskabet in January 2011 to the Copenhagen Metro Team (CMT), a joint venture (JV) between the Italian companies Salini, Tecnimont Civil construction and Seli SpA. Since the bankruptcy of Seli SpA and Tecnimont, Salini Impregilo now owns 100 percent of the JV shares. Seli Tunneling Denmark ApS, a subcontractor to CMT, was initially constituted as a Seli SpA subsidiary and, following the economic difficulties of Seli SpA, was acquired in 2015 by Salini Impregilo. Seli Denmark is in charge of the tunnels excavation and lining and owns the four 5.84-m (19-ft) diameter Seli/Kawasaki earth pressure balance machines."

"INTRODUCTION This research produced a shotcrete formulation that extends beyond stabilization and can be used to restore the structural integrity of damaged infrastructure. The primary challenge was to develop a shotcrete or gunite with structural strength within a few minutes to prevent parasitic loading and allow ingress into damaged structures within a few minutes of the mix formulation being applied. This also applies to mining conditions where rapid support of progressive failures can minimize failure. An additional benefit was the discovery that the product had extremely high adhesion properties in addition to high flexural strengths. The approach to product design was the development of “single bag” dry mixes that are entirely self-contained, can be rapidly transported anywhere in the field or underground, and be deployed using simple equipment. Dry mix eliminates issues relevant to high shear water mixing, as water is added in the form of a mist at the point of delivery; thus low W/C can be achieved. However, as there is no onsite powder mixing, the product must have a high degree of inherent homogeneity. A commercial version of this material is currently offered as Minova’s Tekcrete Fast® product which has been successfully deployed in the mining industry and is currently being used in civil, construction and tunneling operations. The material can rapidly stabilize unstable ground in metal/nonmetal and coal mines. This paper described the technology development, product testing results and applications in mining and civil applications. BACKGROUND The original development of this product was to complete rapid stabilization of shock damaged structures, which falls outside the purview of normal construction and mining practices, due to the critical time issue and the nature of the damaged structure. The stabilization of damaged structures requires materials and equipment that can be rapidly deployed to place materials that have very rapid strength development. These materials need to be placeable at a distance to provide some degree of safety to the responders. In addition, the materials must be able to adhere to structural surfaces that have not been specially prepared and conditioned, and may also be highly fractured, dusty, wet, and quite possibly hot or extremely cold. The technology for the rapid delivery of large volumes of cementitious materials to vertical or even overhead surfaces currently exists. Pneumatic delivery (shotcreting) has been used in construction for over 100 years (American Shotcrete Association, 2014). Shotcreting has played a major role in structures like the Washington D.C. Metro subway system and been used in underground mining applications routinely to serve as part of the primary and secondary support system when used in conjunction with traditional roof bolts. Numerous rapid setting cements are commercially available. They are used for rapid repair of surfaces such as bridge decks, pavements, and commercial floors, as well as structural repairs of vertical and overhead surfaces. Few of these products are specifically marketed for use in shotcrete applications. The majority of rapid setting cements are based on, or at least contain, Portland cement as a principle component. Other components are added that help provide early strength, such as high alumina cement (HAC), organic polymers, chemical accelerators (which can also be added during concrete batching), and calcium sulfate hemihydrate (e.g. gypsum plaster) (Lea, 1971). Cementitious mortars prepared with some of these cements can achieve compressive strengths of 6.8 – 13.8 MPa (1,000-2,000 psi) within 1 hour. However, Portland cement mortar and concrete typically require many weeks of proper curing to reach significant levels of their ultimate strengths, even when used with set accelerators. Also, high early strengths require the use of large proportions of Portland cement in the concrete mix, which can lead to high heat evolutio"

An acceptable source of concrete aggregate is available in Kansas City in a continuous, medium bedded, slightly dipping limestone unit. Removal is accomplished in shallow depth, 12 feet to 17 feet high, room and pillar mines. The accepted empirical design spaces 20 foot pillars 60 feet on center. A portion of the 20 foot unit is left in place for roof support. Rock and soil cover is variable to 100± feet maximum. Long-term stability of these mines is affected by numerous factors, including the above mine-rock profile, ground water conditions and mining practice. Crusher-run aggregate sells at the mine for $2.20 per ton, yielding a gross income of $2.00 to $2.80 per square foot of mine. Use of mine space for real estate development requires a new perspective in mine development. Mining practices to obtain long term stabile structures can become an over-riding factor as compared with minimum production costs and maximum extraction ratios. Poorly mined areas are unusuable for secondary purposes. Development cost for lease space in less desirable mines is substantially greater than those planned for a secondary use. Real estate development in mine space involves unique engineering problems. Properly engineered developments offer singular advantages. Warehouse lease space sells for $.50 to $1.00 per square foot per year; fully developed office areas may double these values.

Surface subsidence monitoring is the most effective means for investigating the nature of, and developing the techniques for predicting, the surface movement and deformation process. However, because of imperfection in survey equipment and field practices, the surface movement data collected from field survey are not error-free. Also due to lack of proper numerical techniques for computing surface deformation from the measured surface movement data, a relatively large portion of the subsidence data collected could not provide more information other than surface movement. In this paper, the sources and magnitude of errors in the measured surface movements and calculated surface deformation are discussed. Techniques for improving the accuracy of the calculated deformation indices (i.e., slope, strain, and curvature) are developed. The proposed techniques include: (1) proper selection of monument spacing for subsidence monitoring; (2) a data smoothing technique for data pre-processing; and (3) a number of numerical methods and/or procedures for calculating surface deformation indices from the measured surface movement data.

A booster fan is an underground fan installed in series with a main surface fan and used to boost the air pressure of the ventilation air passing through it. To accomplish this objective, the fan is installed in a permanent stopping and equipped with airlock doors, a monitoring system, and interlocking devices between main and booster fan controls. The stopping and doors are used to prevent flow recirculation, and the monitors to ensure safe operation of the fan. A booster fan, properly sized and sited, can be used to create safe work conditions and allow the extraction of minerals from areas that would otherwise be uneconomic to mine. In deep and large mines with heavy emissions of air contaminants, the required quantities of air can only be supplied by using high pressure fans. These fans will inevitably induce significant losses of fresh airflow through the stoppings and doors. For well defined ventilation circuits, booster fans can be used to decrease the main fan pressures and reduce the leakage flows. However, this will require a good understanding of the correct ventilation practice, from planning to operation and maintenance of booster fans. The objective of this study is to investigate the conditions under which booster fans can be used safely and efficiently in underground coal mines. Specifically, the study is directed at (1) collecting reliable information on airway resistances and flow requirements from two large U.S coal mines, (2) collecting fan performance data from one or more existing coal mine where booster fans are used regularly, (3) monitoring the performance of booster fans in a laboratory model and an experimental mine, (4) developing a booster fan selection method to assist the ventilation engineer at the planning stage, and (5) training six M.S. or Ph.D. graduate students in advanced mine ventilation.

This paper describes six basic stages between perception and production for a new sand and gravel deposit. Sand and gravel, like many of our natural resources, is taken for granted. It is assumed by John Q. Public that because sand and gravel is ubiquitous that it is available whenever and wherever needed - so long as it does not have to be mined in his neighborhood. This idea illustrates one of the enigmas of the industry, the fact that sand and gravel is abundant; however, its availability is another matter. Another problem is that this resource falls in the category of high volume, low profit materials; therefore, transportation costs are critical. Transportation roughly doubles the cost of these materials. It is not difficult to find sand and gravel, at least in Michigan. The problem is to locate a new source close to a market, near an adequate transport route (usually a highway) and in an area which will allow mining.

Freeport Indonesia consists of surface, civil and underground mining areas exposed to numerous geotechnical risks and hazards. PTFI uses various monitoring systems (Micro-Seismic, Firefly Light System, Mira Geoscience machine learning, etc.) to effectively manage these risks. The significant volumes of data from these sensors must be integrated into actionable information to provide the expected risk management. This occurs at the GeoEngineering Integrated Monitoring Centre (GIMC), a centralized department within the GeoEngineering Division, tasked with the responsibility to manage all geotechnical monitoring systems. The main hazard the GIMC is responsible for managing in real time is mine seismicity within the underground mining areas and the potential impacts on safe operations. Seismic system engineers achieve this objective through 24 hours a day and seven days a week operations of the GIMC, providing a centralized point of communication, alerts, evacuations and control during seismic events and emergencies. This paper will describe how the GIMC achieves its goal using reliable procedures and strategies based on detailed Triggered Action Response Plan (TARP), concise communications, novel technologies (FireFly Lighting System), and proven seismic re-entry programs to manage risk within the underground mining operations. The integration of geotechnical monitoring and reporting into a centralized group has improved the effectiveness and management of seismic risks and hazards at PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) mining operations.

Flotation was introduced in phosphate rock processing in the late twenties and since then it has been an important part of the concentration process. More than two thirds of the rock produced in Florida is upgraded by the flotation process. Since no crushing or milling steps are involved in the material preparation, the flotation plant feed is coarser than in most other mineral flotation systems. During hydraulic processing of the rock, particles in the size range of -14, +150 mesh constitute the flotation feed. This size fraction is further classified by hydraulic sizers, stationary screens and vibrating screens into a coarse (-14, +35 mesh) and a fine (-35, +150 mesh) flotation feed. The flotation techniques for concentrating the fine feed as practiced by the Florida Phosphate producers have been standardized over the years, however, methods for upgrading the coarse feed differ from plant to plant. "The Greater Paris projects involves the creation of a 200km extension of the actual public transport network on the close outskirt of Paris. In 2011, SYSTRA has been awarded the Engineering studies of a 20km underground section in the densely urbanized southeast quarter of the Parisian suburb. In order to both guide the TBM technology choice and identify and mitigate the risk due to soil settlement during tunnel boring, several analysis have been carried out and integrated into a Geographical Information System to share and manage this risk during the successive design phases of the project. The geological context‘s complexity and the Owner‘ requirements have led to the necessity of using an innovative analysis approach, leveraging both the numerical modelling analysis’s accuracy and the analytical method‘s ease of programming and implementation in a GIS, by the mean of the calibration of the analytical approach’ parameters on the FEM results.INTRODUCTIONThe Greater Paris Transport Project foresees the extension of the actual public transport network to the close outskirt of Paris through the extension lines 11 and 14, the creation of a circular new line around Paris - line 15 completed by lines 16 and 18 linking developing territories - and line 17 to Roissy-Charlesde- Gaulle airport.The SOCIETE DU GRAND PARIS (SGP) is the public institution that promotes this project and awards SYSTRA as Engineering for the 15th Line southeast section.Line 15th – South-East sectionIn 2011, the Owner SGP (SOCIÉTÉ DU GRAND PARIS) awarded to SYSTRA the preliminary and detailed design of a 20km-long underground section of Line 15, between the stations of Villejuif-Louis-Aragon and Noisy-Champs. The double-track, single-tube tunnel has an inner diameter of 8.5m (about 9.8m excavated diameter, 75m2 excavated cross-section). The tunnel is inserted in a densely urbanized context."

Ground control analysis and groundwater inflow assessments for underground coal mines require in-depth field investigations including, but not limited to, geological and geotechnical core logging, downhole geophysical logging, laboratory rock strength testing, and packer (Lugeon) testing. Field and laboratory data collection are time consuming and expensive, and an initial understanding of the expected trends among various geotechnical and hydrogeological parameters can assist with the planning and optimization of geotechnical characterization studies and grouting plans. In this study, a comprehensive database is analyzed, comprised of important rock mass characteristics (hydraulic conductivity, rock quality designation (RQD), and lithology) for coal-bearing rocks in the Central Appalachian Basin. Statistical analysis of the data is completed to establish an enhanced understanding of geotechnical and hydrogeological conditions expected to be encountered as underground coal mining passes near and beneath streams and rivers. The results of the study provide valuable reference material for the coal mining industry for completion of shaft installations, mine stream crossings, environmental assessments, and grouting and mine dewatering designs.

Preliminary design is underway for the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority’s (MWRA) next major tunnel program, the Metropolitan Water Tunnel Program (MWTP). The MWTP is the latest part of MWRA’s ongoing efforts to achieve redundancy for its metropolitan water transmission system including its historic deep rock City Tunnel, City Tunnel Extension and Dorchester Tunnels. The MWTP comprises several deep rock tunnels that will be approximately 10-foot to 12-foot finished diameter totaling just over fourteen miles long and ten connections to existing large diameter surface piping and pumping stations. This paper will present an update on current engineering and permitting efforts, packaging schemes, and the schedule to complete the MWTP.

Efficient performance of EPB TBMs in clayey ground is primarily dominated by the flow capability of the excavated muck in the cutterhead and screw conveyor. Currently, Consistency Index approach is used to evaluate clay clogging potential, but it does not include the effects of surcharge pressure on clay behavior. In this paper, a macro-scale soil rheometer is introduced to assess the clogging potential under various water content and surcharge loading conditions. The results show that, in addition to water content, surcharge pressure has clear impact on clay clogging too. In practice, Consistency Index chart can be refined to incorporate the impact of face pressure to better simulate the EPB tunneling conditions.

The Santa Fe Mine, located in west central Nevada, began leaching ore in 1988 and completed ore processing in 1995. Homestake Mining Company has completed final reclamation of the site, including remediation of bare surface soils resulting from the oxidation of sulfide minerals and migration of acidity in the mine waste repositories. The need to remediate oxidized sulfides and mitigate resultant acidity at the Santa Fe Mine emphasizes the economic, reclamation, and environmental advantages for understanding and pre-planning for management of potential sulfide wastes during mine planning phases. The lack of pre-planning by mining companies for sulfide waste management was common in the 1980's due primarily to mining of reserves characterized largely as oxide deposits and to the common opinion that low moisture regimes in arid or semi- arid climates would not allow for significant acid generation. Since the 1980's, operational experience has shown that sulfide wastes, deposited randomly in waste dumps and without adequate planning for final reclamation success, can create final reclamation problems that are very costly to remediate. While mine waste characterization, waste management plan compilation, and in-pit selective waste handling procedures add operational costs, the reclamation experiences at the Santa Fe Mine are indicative that pre-planning and management is worthwhile both in actual overall cost efficiency and in successful reclamation of the mine site. The reclamation program at the Santa Fe Mine shows Homestake's continued commitment to the successful management and reclamation of their mine sites.

Like the Arizona jeans commercial says: Arizona's not just a state, its a state of mines. Nearly 300 mines operate in Arizona making it the largest nonfuel mining state in the nation. Although copper is king in Arizona's mineral complex, nonmetallic minerals play important roles both regionally and nationally. Throughout Arizona's mineral resource development history industrial minerals have dominated over the metals for most, but not recent years. The State's metal mining industry which makes Arizona the number one mining state in the United States is a relatively young phenomenon. Arizona was an important industrial mineral producer long before her metal mining industry got started. Salt, phosphates, silicates, and oxides as food additives, tanning chemicals, gemstones, components of aboriginal ordnance, pigments, and construction materials are among the minerals produced long before copper, gold, silver, and the other metals became important. Around 92 % of Arizona's mineral industry is made up of nonfuel minerals, 86 % of that is accounted for by copper. Another 4 % is taken up by copper byproducts of molybdenum, silver, and gold. The remaining 10% of the production is occupied by non-fuel, non-metallic minerals. Arizona's 1994 industrial mineral production of nearly $380 million ranks us among the top 25 in the nation and higher than the total mineral production of at least 15 states.
