The Blind Springs Hill pumice beds are located 5 miles southwest of Benton, California in the foothills between the Benton Mountain Range and Blind Springs Valley. The best exposures of the pumice are in an area 0.75 miles west of Blind Springs Hill. The pumice is Quaternary ejecta material which came from the rhyolitic volcanoes in the Glass Mountain-Volcanic Tablelands area of Mono County. The pumice beds occur in two distinct layers separated by an unconformity. The upper layer is 0 to 11 feet thick and consists of coarse subangular pumice fragments, some of which are over 1.75 inches in diameter. The lower bed is medium to coarse grained with subangular fragments up to 1.0 inch. The lower bed is 0 to 9 feet thick. Overburden at the Blind Springs Hill deposit varies from 0 to 15 feet. There are approximately 1 million cubic yards of material in the deposit that can be mined. The size distribution in the deposit is mostly fine with only 10.6% of the pumice fragments being over 0.5 inch in diameter, the minimum size needed for stone-wash or acid-wash applications. Suitability of pumice for the textile industry is quantified by standard 15-minute abrasion and absorption tests. In the Blind Springs Hill deposit, the plus 0.5 inch fraction has an abrasion loss of 33% which is too high for stone-wash application but it has an absorption capacity of 36% which makes it suitable for acid-wash applications in the textile industry. The abrasion and absorption properties of this deposit are within the range of those which have been measured for other pumice deposits within the United States.

INTRODUCTION This paper is for the mining manager, generally meaning mine superintendent, chief engineer, and others who have control over the mine operation responsible for feeding the insatiable beast called the mill or processing plant. The author is not from mine management but from the field of technical mine engineering consulting. This fact illustrates the authors gross inadequacy to comment on this subject. On the other hand, the consulting profession allows visits to many mine operations, worldwide, supplying many different commodities. The common complaints and misunderstandings that have been heard worldwide will be shared within the following few paragraphs. In order to discuss optimization, one must first define it. There certainly will be many papers in the following sessions that claim to optimize something, or other, based on a technical definition of cost, efficiency, throughput or some other quantifiable basis. DEFINE OPTIMIZATION Actual optimization of an operation is not as easily achieved as most of us in the technical world would like. Borrowing terminology from the technical world, the boundary conditions and the optimization function are usually not well defined. The problems in many cases do not lend themselves to quantification. Typical management procedures are to establish goals or strategies that set the approach or general boundary conditions to the overall plant. Three simple cases are listed below as possible corporate strategies to optimization of a mine-process plant complex. 1) Maximized discounted cash flow 2) Minimized long term cost of product 3) Maximized resource utilization This list seems simple when presented in the above context, uncluttered by constraints such as market position, capital availability, or environmental limitations. Successful leaching of gold depends on appropriate chemical conditions; contact between leach solution and the gold particles; separation of the leach solution from the solids and extraction of the valuable ion from the solution. Irrespective of the leaching method employed the chemical conditions required are similar as is the dependence of solu­tion/gold contact on liberation. The various leaching methods available vary in the means by which gold/solution contact and solid/liquid separation are achieved. The essential difference between heap or vat leaching techniques and those involving agitation of a slurry is dependence on percolation for effective gold/solution contact. The most significant factor preventing uniform percolation is the presence of fines or clays. The quantity and character of the fines fraction is ore type dependent and may result from crushing, degradation during stacking or leaching, or the natural size distribution of the ore. The problems associated with fines can be aggravated during stacking and preparation of the heap. Segregation during stacking can result in concentration of fine particles at the centre of heaps. Further concentration of fines may also occur during irrigation by the movement of the fine particles with the solution. The end result is that the areas in which fines are concentrated become areas of low permeability. The contact between leach solution and the ore in such areas is, at best, slowed down dramatically and, in some cases, prevented altogether. The consequences of this phenomena are slow leaching and a reduction in recovery. The conventional solution to this problem is well known. Agglomeration of ore prior to heap leaching is practised widely. The effect of agglomeration is to immobilise the fines by causing them to adhere either to each other or to larger ore particles. The net effect is that the ore behaves as if no fines were present. The use of agglomeration is limited only by its cost, the most significant components of which are the cost of binding agent, commonly cement, and the capital cost of the agglomerating equipment.

It's 12:30 A.M. The day before had been a long one with problems ranging from proper application of shotcrete during cold weather and the follow-on precautions for curing, meetings with city officials to avert a job shutdown because traffic wasn't being maintained properly and finally a briefing before METRO's General Manager to bring him up to date on projections for meeting the operational date of June 1975. The phone rings and Officer Jones of the Park Police says "Mr. Lynch, this lady in the apartments overlooking the jobsite is complaining of noise and she wants the job shutdown". "Officer Jones, have you called the Project Manager or the Resident Engineer?" "Yes, sir, but there is no answer!" "O.K., Officer, I'll check it out." In calling the job, I can only get the guard, because the inspector is in the tunnel. After some time, the guard calls back and says he doesn't know the way down into the tunnel. I have since had a difficult time believing that one. In the interim I finally reached the Resident Engineer and explained the situation. And finally at 1:30 A.M. the inspector called the Resident to say that the Park Police stopped the job at 1:00 A.M. because we didn't respond promptly. A similar situation had occurred some 2 years previously. With great expectation, noise specifications were developed to correct the earlier situation that had occurred. These newly developed specifications were in force at the time of this most recent shutdown. Common sense would tell you that even though we had developed and implemented, we believe, some of the best and most practical noise specifications in construction practice today, we had not enforced them. This is the 3rd Paper in a series by this author, the first two being published at the two previous International Conferences. Since the Aachen Conference, Rio Tinto has carried out an extensive benchmarking exercise to see how we are positioned with respect to other leading companies (in our sector and other sectors of major economic importance). We need to be sure that Rio Tinto is at the forefront of best practises in Sustainable Development (SD) and is using the most effective tools and methods. This paper will present key findings from this work. Rio Tinto Minerals, working as representatives of IMA-Europe was a leading contributor to the European Commission DG Enterprise Voluntary Reporting Scheme for SD Indicators in the Non-Energy Extractive Industry. In Rio Tinto Minerals we have been using these SDIs in the management of our business and the paper will report on how they contribute to the management of our business and the paper will report on how they contribute to business value in: deepening customer relationships, eco-efficiency of operations, land use planning and permitting for new and expanding facilities, community relations, policy engagement with government authorities and strengthening the bond between the company and employees. We continue to support the Voluntary SDI Reporting Scheme, considering it to be important in the expanding EU and as a model for other regions globally. For example we have ore suppliers in developing countries and we use these SDIs in assisting them to better their performance, for we have an obligation to use our influence for continuous improvement. The paper will describe this work. Over the last 12 months our company has created a new Industrial Minerals unit called Rio Tinto Minerals which brings together all the borates, talc and salt operations, R&D, marketing, sales and customer care worldwide. "The future of mining will be characterized not only by the application of modern technology, but also by the harmonization of economic, environmental and social issues. These areas set major future challenges which are complex and demand extensive knowledge. As an example, mining of highly complex orebodies for the supply of often critical raw materials, needs to consider technically demanding and cost-intensive extraction issues. The amount of tailings, which need to be stored, increases with the amount of ore mined. Therefore, the negative impact on environment and society increases. Hence mining becomes expensive with regard to all three aspects: economy, environment and society. In view of a sustainable mining practice this challenge should be used as an opportunity. The positive impact should be maximized for present and future generations. The objective is to create and use the mining openings in an optimum way related to sustainability. The approach of Blue Mining, which focuses on energy and ergonomics in the field of Sustainable Development, enhances the closure planning by recommending subsequent usage of such openings for energy storage. The approach fosters among others the implementation of the 7th Goal for Sustainable Development defined by the United Nations with the assurance of access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. The usage of underground storage increases the stability of solar and water power usage, which are otherwise unreliable. Blue Mining embeds these issues in the main planning effort long before groundbreaking. This approach involves experience from past and current projects. This paper introduces the concept of Blue Mining with respect to post-mining utilization of a mine for energy storage. Methods and perspectives are presented with examples covering best-practices and lessons-learned."

For at least five decades, a plume containing acidic metal-bearing water has been moving through the shallow alluvial aquifer along Pinal Creek in the Globe-Miami area. Two chemical facies of water are distinguished in the alluvial aquifer: (1) a metal-rich acidic plume with gram per liter concentrations of metals (primarily iron) and pH values between 3 and 5 and (2) neutralized water with a pH greater than 5, low concentrations of metals, and high concentrations of sulfate and manganese. Historically, the acid plume has moved through the aquifer at an average velocity of 0.6 m/day, ten times slower than the average pore velocity of groundwater in the aquifer calculated using the Darcy equation. The rate of migration of the metal-rich plume is retarded by pH-dependent chemical reactions between acid water and the aquifer matrix. As acid water is neutralized by reaction with calcite, rising pH conditions in- crease the oxidation rate of iron and decrease its solubility resulting in the precipitation of ferric hydroxides. The formation of ferric hydroxides is a proton releasing reaction which main- tains acidic conditions. The acidit of the plume and the neutralization capacity of tKe aquifer are best assessed in terms of the iron content of the water and not the hydrogen ion activity computed from pH measurements. The parameters controlling plume migration are: (1) the calcite content of the aquifer (2) the iron acidity of plume water, and (3) the rates of acid neutralization and ferrous iron oxidation. A numerical solute transport and reaction model based on the concept of iron acidity effectively simulates the historical development of acidic conditions, predicts the behavior of the plume, and was used as a management tool to identify the most efficient and cost effective remedial strategy.

Richard has 20 years' experience with environmental health and safety affairs. He has a bachelor of science degree from the University of South Carolina. With him is Daniel Warnock, who is supervisor of safety and training also at the Hardee Phosphate Complex. Daniel's experience is in safety programs and electrical training. Their presentation is "Regulations Versus Management Practice." RICHARD GHENT: Written procedures give structure to safety programs. At their best, they are brief and understandable to facility personnel and clearly identify roles and responsibilities. At worst, they attempt to recite the entire regulation they are intended to address. Some regulations, such as OHSA's Hazard Communication Standard, require employers to develop, implement, and maintain a written program. As written programs and procedures are developed, some basic questions arise: Is the program designed to achieve compliance with regulatory requirements or does management expect the program to go beyond compliance to some higher level of performance? Management may have difficulty in measuring and communicating performance expectations in safety. A facility with 4 million safe work hours does not suddenly become unsafe the day their safety record is broken. Generally, management expects safety programs to meet regulatory requirements and to protect the employer from enforcement actions and fines from regulatory agencies. Management also expects that safety programs will result in a safer work environment with fewer incidents, accidents, and near misses. But it is difficult to know when a safety program has succeeded. If the program is expected to go beyond compliance, what other standards should be included (e.g., ANSI standards, company management practices, lessons learned from inspections and audits, recommendations from safety committees, etc.) in the

Introduction A problem that has faced mining engineers and mining geologists for many years is how to best explore a particular prospect so that the basic decision as to whether the material present is ore or only high-grade rock can be made with some confidence. It is obvious that one could not begin a large scale mining program on the basis of tests made on a few hand samples. On the other hand, one could not be 100 percent certain as to the average grade or tonnage before beginning development, as this would require the orebody to be mined out in the sampling process. The basic objectives of the exploration program can be stated as (1) to reduce mining risk; (2) to lessen the cost of development; and (3) to increase the profits of mining. The exploration program should be terminated when these objectives are no longer being met. The construction of tunnels is a specific mining operation. In the exploration program one should gather the data needed to determine (1) the type of excavation technique(s) to be used; and (2) the rate of advance that might be expected. As in the evaluation of an orebody, with the data collected it should be possible to estimate mining costs and project life. Unfortunately, at the present time, it is not possible to do this at least when dealing with medium to hard rock types. The reason for this, it is felt, is basically the inability to identify what specific rock mass properties are of use in tunnel design and to specify how these may be obtained in an exploration program. Your interesting and well-written paper brings up the issue of the purpose or use of a mineral property appraisal, specifically the value of these evaluations when the quality and quantity of the mineral resource to be exploited have not been thoroughly investigated. I am not a practicing professional in regards to valuation of limestone investment opportunities. I simply wish to make a few generic observations about the appraisal process in order to stimulate meaningful thinking by appraisal professionals whose reports may be reviewed by professional investors and "laypersons" alike. It is my contention that the analysis given in your paper is very thorough, considering the data that was made available to you. But I would not like to be the person responsible for investment decision making without having a feel for the risk involved. Therefore, the reviewer must classify this type of analysis as relatively "subjective" because they have not received an indication of the inherent risk involved in exploiting a mineral resource. This risk can best be quantified by using probabilistic methods in conjunction with the quality and quantity of the mineral to be produced. Most appraisals passively ignore this problem. Specifically, you have accurately identified the various costs and values entering the economic appraisal process. These can usually be quantified with a great deal more certainty than the capability of the resource to provide 25 years of quality material. Also, in Cases A (West Virginia)and B (Alabama), you are fortunate enough to have previous operations data. What if there had never been production from these properties? How does a potential mineral property investor evaluate the resource capability to meet various projected financial outcomes without spending a good deal of up-front capital to drill and delineate enough quality resources for a 20-plus year operation. These questions pose a substantial risk to any potential mineral investor. Only probabilistic methods should be used to quantify this type of problem, short of drilling and metallurgical testing. INTRODUCTION In ore beneficiation one of the simplest methods of mineral concentration is hand picking to remove either the ore or the waste material from a moving table or conveyor belt. Ore Sorting Equipment may be defined as equipment for mechanized picking. This type of equipment has been used successfully over the past thirty years or so to beneficiate ores of various types in particle mesh sizes between 1mm and 200mm.. at throughputs of up to 150 tonnes per hour. In general for ore sorting to be a consideration the ore and the waste material must be well liberated in the feed to the sorter (that is into practically discrete particles of ore and waste). The larger the liberation size the more likely sorting is to be cost effective. Correct selection of ore sorting equipment is most important and often special machine features are developed for an individual application. Sorter performance can be best determined by extensive testwork of representative ore at design tonnage on prototype or preferably on production model sorting machines. ADVANTAGES OF SORTING ORE The four main advantages of sorting ore are: Reduced milling cost. Reduced processing cost. Higher overall recovery. Reduced transportation costs. Reduced Milling Cost With sorters installed the milling plant following the sorter is generally smaller and hence less costly to install and operate as it only has to handle the sorter product. However this benefit is somewhat offset by the increased cost of the screening and washing plant prior to the sorter and the cost of the sorting plant itself. Reduced Processing Cost As there is less material of higher grade presented to the concentrating plant following the sorter, this plant will generally be smaller and less costly to construct and operate than a plant treating the total quantity of material. Increasing quantities of nutrients and pesticides in agricultural runoff in recent years has caused the more developed western nations to become concerned about diffuse agricultural pollution. Thus, the problem of diffuse pollution is of greater importance and concern for any integrated water quality management programme. The above mentioned sources and activities causing pollution to groundwater cannot be completely avoided. The best solution is to entail a firm understanding of the principles of solute transport through porous media. The complex factors that control the movement of contaminants in porous media and the resulting behavior of contaminant plume are usually intricate to assess because of interaction of many factors such as dispersion, advection, sorption, degradation, volatilization, etc. As accurate quantification of solute under field conditions is inherently difficult, the fate of nitrate and phosphate have been analyzed in laboratory column and channel studies. From the analysis of the breakthrough curves, the dispersion co-efficient for nitrates and phosphates through sandy soil was found to be 0.262 m2/d and 0.114 m2/d for column studies, 0.321 m2/d and 0.231 m2/d for channel studies respectively. The column studies revealed that the concentration of nitrates and phosphates increased steadily in the first few days (around 5 days) and then it increased rapidly after 8 to 10 days. However, it attained equilibrium after 20 days. Similarly, the channel studies revealed a steady increase in concentration of nitrates and phosphates in the first few days (1 to 2 days) and rapid increase up to 15 days and there after it attained equilibrium. In the study, one-dimensional analytical model has been developed which include the advection, dispersion, and a characteristic term called ?total elimination rate?. The comparative study of column and channel studies, and model output (in which the term total elimination rate ?K? is considered as zero) exhibited a variation of 30 to 50 % in leaching characteristics of pollutants (nitrates and phosphates).

The mechanization of the materials management function must contribute to the overall goal of optimization of profits. A computerized system contributes to the profitability of the company by saving more than it costs to operate. Design and implementation of the sys- tem must respond to the needs of users, the operating environment of the property, and must support the objectives of materials management. Three basic functions interact within the scope of materials management. They are inventory control, purchasing, and warehousing which have the following objectives: 1) Inventory control-to request materials in a timely manner and in quantities that provide the best level of support to users at the lowest cost. 2) Purchasing-to purchase requested materials and services at the required time and at the lowest cost. 3) Warehousing-to efficiently receive, store, and issue materials and to prepare accurate transaction documents for the activities. The development of the mechanized materials management system will require a plan and objective analysis by management and system users of system requirements. A typical plan would include: 1) System Design Objectives-the development of objectives that support mechanization of the materials management function. 2) System Characteristics and Concepts- the development of key system concepts and characteristics, which identify the needs of materials management. 3) System Inventory Item Classification- development and assignment of inventory category codes to inventory items. 4) System Order Decision Rules-the development of decision rules and forecasting techniques to minimize the inventory investment and to provide acceptable support levels. 5) System Report Structure-the development of a report structure to support the goals and objectives of materials management. 6) System Report Design-the development and design of reports for effective utilization of the mechanized system.

[Full-scale laboratory experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of ventilation and water spray pressure on the potential dust capture efficiency of a ventilation system comprised of blowing ventilation and an underboon scrubber. The tests were performed for a 1.52-m (5-ft) roof height and 2.36 m-3/s (5000 cfm) blowing ventilation volume, and a 2.44-m (8-ft) roof height and 4.72 m3/s (10.000 cfm) blowing ventilation volume at three face positions of the miner. The scrubber suction rate was varied for the tests to study the effect of scrubber flow rate on capture efficiency. The airflow patterns and scrubber efficiency were determined by performing tracer gas tests. Tracer gas was released through a manifold placed in front of the rotating miner drum. The gas was sampled in a grid fashion using a real-time multi-point gas sampling system. The capture efficiency of the scrubber was evaluated based an the peak gas concentration of the gas laden air drawn through the scrubber and the amount of gas passing, through the scrubber as a fraction of the gas released at the face. The data were analyzed to yield scrubber peak concentrations, potential exposures at various operator locations and the gas removal percentage (GRP). The underboom scrubber appears to work best in the end sump position, relative to the start sump and start slab positions. The capture efficiency scrubber was higher for 2.44-m (8-ft) roof heights compared to 1.52-m (5-ft) roof heights. The data also showed that the scrubber air discharged behind the mining machine may be drawn into the face area by the action of the blowing ventilation system, resulting in recirculation.]

Because of their relatively low cost, carbonate rocks are desirable in abatement of air pollution by acid gases. Although many processes and types of equipment have been proposed to control or prevent the emission of acid gases, this paper considers only three: dry-limestone injection, wet-limestone scrubbing, and chemically active fluid beds. For the dry-limestone-injection process, surface area-especially from pores in the 0. 2- to 0.3-micron range-is one of the important parameters which will discriminate between less and more reactive carbonate rocks. Marls, chalks, oolitic calcites, and other fine- grained limestones show larger-than-average surface areas and better- than-average removal efficiencies. Inert chemical impurities such as silica detract from reactivity. A dolomite is not necessarily less re- active than a calcite. For the wet-limestone-scrubbing process, dissolution rate of the carbonate rock controls the differences in stone reactivity. In this process the dolomites are less reactive than the calcites. In addition, more than 90 percent of the dolomitic impurity in Fredonia white lime- stone is inert during limestone scrubbing. Dissolution rate is also a function of particle size for large-grained carbonate rocks. Fine grinding of such rocks will increase the dissolution rate to that of a fine-grained rock. Hence the requirement of high dissolution rates may be met by some grinding of fine-grained material (e. g., marl, chalk, or other limestone) or by fine grinding of coarser grained material. For chemically active fluid beds, chalks have the best capacity to absorb both SO2 and H2S. However, most chalks are probably unsuitable for fluid beds because of high attrition rates. Because dolomites are generally more reactive than calcites with both SO2 and H2S, a dolomite would be the feed material of choice for a chemically active fluid bed.

This paper will describe several modifications to design of con­ventional oxide gold heap leaching. They are targeted at reduc­ing costs and simplifying heap operations. These modifications were conceptualized during consulting work on over 90 differ­ent heap leaches. In 1995, a unique opportunity arose to imme­diately apply all of these design concepts to the permitting and construction of a new facility at the American Girl Mine in southeastern California. American Girl Mine has operated since 1987. In April 1995, the mine faced a situation with grave consequences for cash flow. Approval for mining of a new ore zone, Oro Cruz, had just been granted, after lengthy delays by California regula­tors. All existing pad space would be filled by October. Only 6 months were available, and new pad siting and design were still undecided. Permitting of a new pad had not begun. Options were quickly reviewed. A strong criteria for pad site selection and design was ease of permitting. There was also a strong desire to install a system that would achieve better met­allurgical recovery and reduced operating costs, compared to previous heaps at this mine. One site offered the best chance for rapid permitting. It was the site of the original 1987-90 heap leach. This already dis­turbed ground contained 1.6 million tons of heaped ore. The old heap had just completed detoxification and was about to be signed off as a Group C waste, ready for reclamation. Instead of recontouring and revegetating the old heap, which the reclamation plan anticipated, we offered BLM and the County something even better. We proposed to off-load much of the detoxed old heap, and reuse the space. The off-loaded material would be back-filled into the original open pit, imme­diately adjacent. While the footprint of the proposed new pad was much larger, the reuse of disturbed ground, and backfilling of the open pit, had very strong appeal to the regulators. Our permitting strategy included the technical design of the proposed new facility. Many of the new design details also appealed to the regulators, particularly the "zero active ponds" concept.

Consolidation Coal Company (Consol) supports an active R&D effort to improve the safe, productive mining of coal and to utilize coal in an environmentally acceptable manner. Attention will be focused on degasification of coal seams, continuous coal transport systems, earth sciences activities, and coal combustion. Brief mention will be made regarding the SO2 emissions control programs. The research program constitutes about 1.0% of Consol coal sales which positions Consol as the preeminent coal company supporting broad-based research addressing the full spectrum of the various problems associated with utilizing the nation's abundant reserves of economical, readily available fuel.

6.1 INTRODUCTION The three most critical factors in successful heap leaching operations are: • The methods employed to pretreat ore (i.e, crushing and agglomeration); • Placement of ore on the leach pad (heap building techniques); and • Wetting of the ore with cyanide (solution application techniques). Improper execution of any of these initial steps may result in a substantial sacrifice of total metal extraction or, in the worst case, in project failure. Ore preparation in terms of crushing and agglomeration was discussed in Chapter 5; this chapter therefore focuses on commonly employed techniques for heap construction and solution application. The main objective of heap construction is to obtain the most homogeneous heap possible. "Channeling" of leachate in heaps with preferential seepage paths leads to preferential leachate distribution and uneven/incomplete extraction. The two main contributing causes of channeling are inadequate attention to heap construction and uneven solution application. These pitfall s can best be avoided through a knowledge of the various techniques available and the applicability and success of these techniques with various ore types and site conditions. The remainder of this chapter provides a discussion on these two subjects. 6.2 HEAP BUILDING TECHNIQUES Successful heap building techniques vary with the type of ore and, since no two orebodies are exactly alike, some slight modifications are usually necessary for each specific project. However, it is possible to generalize in terms of the appropriate techniques to be used with ores having similar characteristics. Abundant beach and offshore resources of gold deposits are demonstrated along the coast of Alaska, and Nome is one of the richest places. Considerable amounts of mineral resources data were collected and stored in geodatabase of ArcGIS. In searching for the best model for the interpretation of the Nome offshore gold placer deposit and accurate estimation of the reserve, the data were processed and visualized using ArcGIS. The gold concentration data collected from the Nome offshore deposit are of characteristics such that: (1) near lognormal distribution of data, (2) high positive skewed distribution, (3) a small number of extreme values dominating the reserve estimation, and (4) apparent anisotropy of the variogram. These characteristics make the development of an interpolation model for the gold deposit a challenging task. In this study, it is determined that five geostatistical methods provided by ArcGIS with visualization capability, i.e., Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW), Ordinary Kriging (OK), Ordinary Kriging with lognormal transformation (OK-log), Simple Kriging (SK) and Indicator Kriging (IK) are suitable candidates for the development of an interpolation model. The five algorithms are evaluated and compared with each other in the study. Cross-validation technique is employed to examine the accuracy of the five approaches. It is determined that the OK and SK algorithms are not suitable for this dataset because of the difficulty of fitting the semivariogram model despite their lower RMSE (Root-mean-square error) and the higher RMSS (Root-mean-square Standardized). The OK-log algorithm does not provide satisfactory prediction either, because it places too much weight on the role of extreme values resulting in overestimation and extremely high RMSE. Reserve estimation of each blocks is conducted using each of the interpolation methods and compared with the reserve calculated using the conventional polygon method. The IWD and IK algorithm seem to provide estimations more agreeable with the conventional polygon method.

This paper presents the development of a knowledge based integrated decision support system (E.X.I.S) for the extractive industries to provide information concerning the environmental impact of extractive operations on land quality, surface and ground waters, and the best solutions for the rehabilitation/revegetation of the waste disposal areas to the relevant target groups (extractive industries, regional authorities, national authorities, research institutes, public). GIS was integrated with the decision-making models for the rehabilitation and revegetation of mine spoil. The system design involves several steps including site selection ? mine type identification ? waste identification ? selection of rehabilitation (revegetation or other methods). The knowledge based model consists of two integral parts: the model base, in which the input data are processed and classified using special fuzzy algorithms and criteria and the knowledge model, which hosts the various decision algorithms concerning evaluation of vegetation covers, selection of trees and plant species, selection of rehabilitation and revegetation schemes and also economic analysis for each option. The system input will include parameters on site characteristics (climate, topography, geology, hydrology etc), waste type and properties (physical-geotechnical and geochemical data) as well as environmental parameters of the existing waste disposal area. Based on the values of the above parameters and the characteristics of the rehabilitation technologies developed worldwide, the system, using IF-THEN rules will define a list of appropriate techniques for the rehabilitation of the examined waste. Then, the model will involve the application of multi-criteria analysis (MCA), i.e. a structured system for ranking alternatives and making selections and decisions. Each technique shall be judged based on its behavior into four fields, i.e. financial, social, technical and environmental criteria. In turn these fields will be analyzed into a lower level of evaluation criteria.
