Metallic A pigment- is any particulate matter that is essentially insoluble and chemically unaffected by the media into which it is dispersed. According to this very broad definition, colored pigments, white pigments, fillers, extenders, and functional pigments would all be included. The particulate size range would also be quite broad ranging from very fine colloidal particles (~0.01µ) to relatively coarse particles (~100.0µ). This broad definition is usually subdivided into more practical divisions which tend to relate the classification of the pigment to its primary function in the system in which it is used. Hence, the word extender implies that its major purpose may be to extend the system.

The Haile Gold Mine was the largest gold producer east of the Mississippi River prior to 1942. It is currently the only producing gold mine in the Southeastern United States. Current development involves the mining and heap leaching of some 1000 TPD. Carbon is employed as a recovery medium. Due to its clayey nature and excessive fines in the oxide ore, agglomeration using Portland cement is required prior to leaching. The ore ranges in screen size from two inches to -200 mesh. The agglomerating step combined with certain other conditions has enabled Piedmont Mining Company to achieve recoveries of 90%.

"The data from EPB cells located inside the pressurized chamber of EPB TBMs and also the data from the pressure sensors in grout lines are quite important in controlling the EPB operation. However, there have always been questions in regards to pressure distribution along the shield body. Could the pressure distribution data be used to come up with potential locations for ground loss? Does the overcut region, the space between the shield body and the maximum cut diameter, consist of broken material or EPB muck, or does that region consist primarily of void space? During free air interventions, how does pressure distribute along the TBM body? To address these questions, one of the two EPB TBMs used in the Northgate Link Light Rail project in Seattle, WA is equipped with EPB cells in front and rear body to monitor the pressure distribution along the TBM body in addition to the standard 6 EPB cells located inside the cutterhead chamber and pressure sensors located at the grout lines. This paper discusses the results of this study and weighs on the valuable data that can be collected by using the shield pressure sensors.INTRODUCTIONThe cutterhead of the TBM is normally equipped with overcutters on the cutterhead periphery which extend into the annular space beyond the diameter of the TBM shield. Thus, the overcutters serve to disturb and excavate some of the ground in the annular space which reduces friction and resistance around the TBM body. This phenomenon is necessary to help the TBM steer and navigate around curves. Additionally, the shield of an EPB TBM is also often shaped like a cone, with the diameter decreasing from the front to the tail shield. This conical shape also helps the TBM to navigate because material that is cut by the cutterhead either gets pulled into the cutterhead or it gets pushed out of the way – around the cutterhead and into the annular space. In EPB tunneling, the conditioned material from the face that does not get pulled into the cutterhead mixing chamber flows into the shield gap and pressurizes the surrounding ground. Additionally, grout can travel from the segment annulus into the shield gap. The pressure in the shield gap mainly depends on the pressure of the material at the face and the grouting pressure behind the tail shield."

As a factory-like method, sublevel caving consists of development activities, stockpiling and production activities that are carried out on different levels independently. Therefore, considering the operation from the development phase to the plant will lead to more reliable production scheduling. This paper presents a mixed integer linear programming framework for the long-term production scheduling of sublevel caving that maximizes the net present value while satisfying development activities, mining, and processing capacities, continuous mining, the allowable number of active mining units, grade blending, and vertical and horizontal sequencing. The model is coded in Jupyter Notebook and is solved using the CPLEX solver.

Longwall-induced deformations could jeopardize the mechanical integrity of shale gas well casings positioned in the abutment pillar of a longwall mine. The in situ and induced fracture networks surrounding the gas well could provide pathways for gas flow into the mine creating safety concerns. Hence, this study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) develops a discrete fracture network (DFN) model to characterize the fractures in the overburden based on geomechanical analyses of mining-induced fracture apertures at a study site in southwestern Pennsylvania. The apertures from the geomechanical model are used to develop a stochastic DFN model of the site in fracture flow code (FFC). Multiple realizations of the stochastic DFN model that replicate potential fracture geometries are simulated, and the fracture permeability is compared with field measurements. A maximum field measurement of 5.03 × 10− 12 m2 (5080 mD) and 3.82 × 10− 13 m2 (386 mD) was estimated over the abutment pillar at the Sewickley and Uniontown horizon, respectively. The results show that the average permeabilities from the DFN model agree closely with the field measurements. In addition, the comparison of all the field measurements and 100 DFN realizations show the model is representative of field conditions. These findings provide critical information regarding fracture characteristics in the overburden, which will further be used to predict potential shale gas flow to the mine in the event of a casing breach for an unconventional gas well.

Introduction The Sleeper mine is a near-surface gold mine located in a remote area 56 km (35 air miles) northwest of Winnemucca, NV (Fig. 1). The deposit was discovered in 1984 by an Amax exploration geologist. Favorable drilling results led to feasibility studies and metallurgical testwork. Final evaluation of the mine potential proceeded very quickly. The project received Amax board approval in July 1985. Eight months later, the process plant was fully operational. The first gold ($1 million) was shipped one month later, in March 1986. Total plant capital was $27 million. Payback was achieved in six months. The Sleeper mine was expected to produce 1.6 t (53,000 oz) of gold and 1.3 t (41,000 oz) of silver annually. However, the ore body exceeded all expectations. Production for the first 10 months of operation amounted to 4 t (128,000 oz) of gold and 2.9 t (94,000 oz) of silver. Direct cash operating costs are in the $1.77/g ($55 per oz) range. Amax is actively conducting exploration nearby for additional reserves to extend the mine's life. (See update on page 242.) Geology The Sleeper gold deposit is located on the northwestern flank of the Slumbering Hills and in the Awakening Mining District. Rocks exposed in the vicinity of the deposit are interbedded siltstones, sandstones, and limestones of Triassic age. They are overlain by latite lava flows and tuffs of Tertiary age. Dikes and sills of latite and andesite intrude the sedimentary rocks. Quaternary deposits of mostly sand with minor gravel and clay cover a pediment containing the gold deposit. The sedimentary and volcanic rock units have been transsected and offset by extensive north- northeast trending faults and less abundant northwest trending faults. Both fault systems fractured and prepared the ground for subsequent invasions of mineral-bearing hot spring geothermal waters. The hot spring systems produced widespread hydrothermal alteration and gold mineralization at silicified centers near feeder fault structures. The deposit is hosted by siltstone and latite that have been hydrothermally brecciated. The main breccia is elongated north-northeasterly. The hydrothermal breccia zones appear to dip steeply to the west. Gold mineralization consists of native gold and electrum deposited in two or more high-grade quartz-breccia veins. U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) studies show that 43.5% of surveyed coal preparation plant workers had noise exposures exceeding the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration permissible exposure level of 90 dB(A). Sound levels around vibrating screens in these plants often exceed 90 dB(A). NIOSH is currently developing noise controls for horizontal vibrating screens. To characterize noise sources, NIOSH researchers performed sound pressure level (SPL) measurements on a vibrating screen at their Office of Mine Safety and Health Research laboratory in Pittsburgh. The results show that the entire screen contributes to noise below 1 kHz, and the vibration mechanism housings are most significant above 1 kHz. Constrained layer damping (CLD) treatments and an enclosure were used to reduce mechanism housing noise in this range from 1-10 kHz. These were evaluated using sound power level measurements according to ISO 3744. The CLD treatments reduced the A-weighted sound power level by 3.1 dB in the 1 to 10 kHz one-third-octave bands. A panel-on-frame vibration mechanism enclosure using various types of panels further reduced the A-weighted sound power level from the CLD configuration in the 1 to 10 kHz one-third-octave bands by 3.7, 4.0, and 3.9 dB for aluminum, steel, and Dynalam™ panels, respectively. The combination yielded a 7 dB reduction from baseline in A-weighted sound power for the same frequency range.

Current regulations for fire suppression systems in underground coal mines to protect conveyor belt installations have been in place since the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was enacted. Over time, the coal conveyer equipment being used and ventilation conditions underground have changed significantly, particularly the width of the conveyor belts and the use of belt air at the face. The effect of these new conditions on the effectiveness of suppression systems during a fire is not known. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to evaluate the effect of air velocity, water sprinkler activation temperature and a limited water application time on the effectiveness of water sprinkler fire suppression systems to extinguish large-scale conveyor belt fires. The fire tests were conducted using both new and used 1.8-m-wide, fire-resistant rubber belt that met the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) flame-resistant requirement specified in Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, part 18, section 18.65 (also known as the 2G test). Tests were conducted using standard response sprinklers with activation temperatures of 68° C and 141° C at air velocities of 0.5 and 5.1 m/s. Two tests were conducted at both air velocities for each sprinkler activation temperature, one using a new belt and one with a used belt. The results showed that the suppression system was able to suppress the fires in ten minutes to the point that a miner could extinguish it with a fire hose. However, in several of the tests, the fire reestablished itself a few minutes after the sprinkler water supply was cut off and quickly grew out of control. This report discusses the large-scale experimental configuration, the installation specifications of the fire suppression system and the results and conclusions regarding the effect of air velocity, sprinkler activation temperature and limited water application on the suppression system performance.

This paper deals with the search for the best practical means of storing sulphide bearing tailings, where there is no residual excess of carbonate material. It is the common experience that the sulphide content decomposes, with the aid of bacterial action, and the resulting sulphuric acid escapes, along with any heavy metal solutes, through embankments that are usually porous to some degree. The problem is typified in the tailings of the uranium operations of Elliot Lake, Ontario, where mining started some 20 years ago. The approach to tailings disposal paralleled the practice for other hydrometallurgical plants treating gold and base metal ores. Impoundment areas were designed to retain solids, and a clear and neutral overflow was considered satisfactory practice. Now experience has shown that these areas, some idle for over a dozen years, release acids, in seepage and overflows, to an unacceptable degree. To protect natural water courses neutralizing plants are operated wherever required. Lime slurry is fed continuously into the tailings outflows in a quantity sufficient to raise the pH to 8.5 and precipitate heavy metals that may be in solution. The objection to this procedure is that the plants will require servicing indefinitely, unless a better remedy is found.

The Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project is a $3-billion project that will link Dulles International Airport with the downtown center of Washington D.C. by way of a single seat train ride. The project is mostly above ground, but it does include two short, yet complex, tunnels through the area of Tyson?s Corner. The project is being completed in two phases. The Dulles Transit Partners (DTP), led by Bechtel, was awarded the first phase, a $1.6-bil-lion phase that includes 17 km (11 miles) of track with five stations. At Tyson?s Corner, the project includes twin 730-m- (2,400-ft-) long, 6-m- (20-ft-) diameter tunnels. Bechtel is self-performing construction for the $1.6-billion design-build job. Gall Zeidler Consultants was hired by DTP as designer for the NATM tunnel portion of Phase 1, and Beton-und-Monierbau was hired as tunnel subcontractor. Tyson?s Corner is an affluent and congested area that sits 152 m (500 ft) above sea level. To get through the area, it was decided that tunnels would be the best option with the least amount of disturbance to the surrounding areas. However, with extremely shallow groundcover above some points as well as soft soil throughout, the tunnels are also the most complex aspect of Phase 1. About 213 m (700 ft) was constructed utilizing the cut-and-cover method. The remaining 518 m (1,700 ft) is being constructed using the New Austrian Tunneling Method, which integrates the principles of the behavior of rock and soil masses under load, and monitoring the performance of underground construction during construction. ?The tunnel only falls 2 m (7 ft) from one end to the other and we pass through two soil conditions, they are both soft ground,? said Dominic Cerulli, tunnel task manager for Bechtel. ?Soft ground is very tricky because you have to close the ring in a timely manner to minimize settlements at the surface. If you don?t close the ring quickly to achieve a round structure that?s good in compression, the tunnel could start necking and squatting and the ground above it will settle. We are under major roadways, so excessive settlement would be a bad thing.?

"The Port Mann Main Water Supply Tunnel involves a 1km long tunnel beneath the Fraser River from Surrey to Coquitlam, BC. At depths of up to 60 m below ground, the earth pressure reached 6 bar. The tunnel is constructed using an EPB TBM and gasketed precast concrete segmental liner. The tunnel and two shafts were constructed in a variety of soil conditions ranging from soft to stiff clays and silts, to compact to very dense sands and gravels. After approximately 800m of mining, a very dense and highly variable soil group consisting of cobbles and boulders halted the TBM. Several options were considered to stabilize the TBM face so an intervention could be conducted. Although de-watering was considered, there was risk of settlement to the Port Mann bridge piers, which was within 500m of the tunnel. Hyperbarics were also considered, however, the cost, schedule and uncertainty of the work that needed to be done, made it a risky option. Ground freezing by Liquid Nitrogen was chosen as the best solution, which would provide a frozen block around the face of the TBM. A temporary platform on the river was designed and constructed to enable drilling and installation of the freezing pipes and temperature monitoring equipment. The operation required close coordination among the tunnelling, marine and freezing sectors. Following the intervention, the TBM successfully broke through the reception shaft, and the remaining project was completed. This paper describes the design, construction and operational approaches used for the freezing and serves as a basis for future projects requiring expedited ground freezing."

"The International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) held its 42nd General Assembly along with the 2016 World Tunnel Congress (WTC) April 22-28 in San Francisco, CA. The event was co-organized by the Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA). This was the first time the event has been held in the United States in 20 years.As cities demonstrate strong needs in tunnels and underground spaces for public transportation, subway stations, hydroelectric infrastructures and other underground infrastructure needs, the WTC 2016 provided the 2,319 attendees from around the world a unique occasion to discover the latest state-of-the art innovations in urban planning and underground construction projects in the United States and worldwide.The Congress, held in lieu of the UCA’s North American Tunneling Conference, included an exhibit that attracted 226 exhibitors in 298 booths. The exhibit had on display the latest in technical equipment and services from some of the largest and best companies in the international tunneling industry. The exhibit hall was also the place where participants were able to interact with the authors of the 168 posters and receive answers to various topics directly concerning civil engineers: innovative procurement processes, cost and risk management, contractual methods, BIM technologies and examples of innovative underground infrastructures built worldwide. And the technical program included 353 technical presentations – 185 podium and 168 posters.What is ITA?ITA-AITES is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that promotes greater use of underground space as a key instrument in sustainable development. Recent expansion programs have made the Yunkang underground coal mine the number one producer in Shenxi Province. The mine is the newest in the Datong Coal Administration, currently rated at around 3 Mt/a of coal. Located in the Wa Chushi mountain range about 23 km north of the city of Datong, the mine has undergone a series of expansion phases since startup in 1973. Initial design capacity was 1.5 Mt/a and ultimately, production will be brought to an estimated 7.0 Mt/a by 1985, according to mine superintendent Li Jia-zhi. How Coal Occurs The coal, Jurassic in age, occurs in three economically identifiable seams designated No. 2, 3, and 7. Seams are 100-250 m below the surface. Reserves from this economic zone were not quantified, but Superintendent Li indicated that there was enough mapped out to sustain the expanded production rate for over 20 years. Below the Jurassic coal is another possible economic zone, a Permocarboniferous coal lying 400-600 m below the surface. Little development drilling has been conducted to ascertain its potential. The Jurassic beds are relatively flat and coal quality is reportedly one of the best in China. Heat content of the coal runs around 33.5 MJ/kg and the ash content is less than 10%. In some areas, it is less than 7%. Coal preparation is simple and involves a washing and screening separation into four principal size fractions. Washed coal is stored in one of six storage silos, each with 4000-t capacity. Mining the No. 2 Seam Since startup, primary production has been derived from the No. 2 seam. The coal is relatively hard and is topped by a hard cement-like conglomerate. These factors, coupled with an average thickness between 4 to 6 m, precluded the use of conventional longwall techniques, according to mine engineers. The reforestation potential of bauxite mining spoils by seeding was examined on this research work. The experimental plot was established on the location Strofi Koukouvista 5, Ghiona Mountain. The experiment consists of 3 species (Pinus nigra, Robinia pseudoacacia, and Spartium junceum) with 4 sowing treatments and 2 sowing seasons (autumn and spring). The treatments were: (1) broadcasting; (2) broadcasting and soil cultivation; (3) broadcasting with straw mulching and straw binding with asphalt emulsion; (4) broadcasting with soil cultivation, straw mulching and straw binding with asphalt emulsion. Third year results show that spring is better than autumn as a sowing season. Only the Spartium junceum species were found to germinate and survive in autumn. The results are better for all the species on the spring seeding. The most effective treatments for Robinia pseudoacacia and Pinus nigra are 3 and 4 while for the Spartium junceum even simple broadcasting shows good results although the best ones are achieved with treatments 2, 3 and 4. The paper?s findings show that reforestation by sowing could be effective for some species but further experimentation with other species is recommended. Concerning Robinia pseudoacacia, testing of different seed preparation treatments is needed in order to maximize the germination of seeds.

Echo Bay's Waste Management Program for its Lupin Mine was developed in response to the terms and conditions of the water license issued to the mine in 1981 by the Northwest Territories Water Board. The gold mine, located about 80 km (50 miles) south of the Arctic Circle, commenced production in 1982. The Waste Management Program was based originally on the total containment concept, contingent on future treatability testwork results indicating the best treatment method to ensure pond discharges would be in compliance with stated Northwest Territories Water Board discharge criteria. To assess the various treatment technologies, an investigative program was established to determine the most effective means for treating the tailings pond water. In the course of milling, about 850,000 m3 (11 million cu yd) of tailings are produced annually that require appropriate management to protect the environment. This annual tailings stream consists of about 175,000 m3 (229,000 cu yd) of solids and 675,000 m3 (883,500 cu yd) of water. Following the completion of the required waste management studies, a two-ponds-in-series concept of tailings impoundment was developed. To attain this concept, the tailings impoundment area would require modification and construction to enable the use of such a system.

INTRODUCTION In a very real sense, Butte, Montana is where the copper came from that won two world wars. The price for that unrestricted mining and smelting of copper came due in 1983 when Butte was declared a Superfund site. One of the most complex remnants of this mining history is the Parrot Tailings site. The Parrot Smelter operated from 1881 to 1910 moving Upper Silver Bow Creek to the south and depositing approximately 370,000 cubic yards of waste material adjacent to Upper Silver Bow Creek. Additional mixed waste from other processing sites deposited below the Parrot Tailings at the Northside Tailings, Diggings East and Blacktail Creek Berm total approximately 224,000 cubic yards of contaminated material. As part of the Superfund remedy, EPA proposed leaving all these wastes in place. This proposal prompted a detailed criticism by several geoscientists familiar with the site. The EPA’s 2006 Record of Decision (ROD) did in fact leave these wastes in place which set the stage for a series of studies which continue to refine how best to protect extensive completed Superfund Remediation downstream of Upper Silver Bow Creek. HISTORY OF THE PARROTT MINE AND TAILINGS Placer gold was discovered in Silver Bow Creek, the headwaters of the Clark Fork River only a few miles from the Continental Divide in 1864. This discovery lead to a stampede of placer and lode claims. One of the first lode claims located was the “Parrot” lode, located in the fall of 1864. Progress for developing a mine at the Parrott was slow and it wasn’t until 1876 that one of the original locators encountered a rich vein of chalcocite. Butte had its first copper mine! The Parrott mine was patented in 1879 and by 1881 the Parrot, having lost a “t”, concentrator and smelter were built. The smelter and concentrator were an immediate success with a considerable market for processing the District’s rich copper ore. In 1885 the employees of the Parrot Smelter bought the Butte Reduction Works, another smelter. In 1885 dams were built on Silver Bow Creek to contain various tailings and related processing byproducts (Figure 1).

The objective was to determine operating protocols for a lead and silver column flotation cleaner being considered for installation at Sunshine Precious Metals Inc. 's Kellogg mill in Northern Idaho. In this column, tetrahedrite and galena were floated, and pyrite and other gangue minerals, including siderite and silica, were depressed. The procedure was to develop a dynamic simulation using a linear transfer function approach. The transfer function related cause-and-effect variables such as the influence of collector and depressant dosages on recovery and grades. Bench-scale flotation tests followed by pilot column testing provided the data used to develop a linear transfer function. The transfer function was derived using a spreadsheet. This model was applied to simulate how the flotation column could be made to respond to disturbances in feed grade. The results were that xanthate, zinc sulfate and sodium cyanide were found to be suitable controls for grade and recovery. Simulations showed the best sequence of manipulations of these reagents, and these sequences are useful for future operator training. The conclusion was that linear transfer functions were able to simulate lead and silver recovery, develop scenarios for operator training and provide a foundation for future on-line control.

Fire detection using Carbon Monoxide sensors is based on the assumption that a rise in the level of Carbon Monoxide in the atmosphere over a fixed, predetermined ambient level is indicative of a fire. The method is simple, reliable, and effective in those mines where the only source of CO is from undesired combustion. Ambience for this purpose is defined as that level of the gas that is present on a day to day basis whose source is not a fire. In a diesel powered mine the level of CO can and does vary so widely from hour to hour and minute to minute that the selection of a predetermined, fixed level represents a compromise between sensitivity and reliability. The compromise is a best of both and worst of both situations and the computer system often resembles the little boy who cried wolf instead of a state of the art early fire monitoring and detection system. Cyprus Coal personnel have developed method of determining the ambient level of CO in the atmosphere on a real time basis and using that dynamic ambient level to determine whether or not a fire exists in the mine. The method has been given the name of Wave Trend Crossing.

Gold plant performance during the start-up period, which extends until capacity production is sustained, has a major impact on the internal rate of return and the net present value of gold projects regardless of mining and processing configurations. The start-up period experiences substandard production, extra expenses, and sometimes reduced recovery. This results in lost profits, a portion of which are recouped at the end of the life of the mine. Poor start-up performance can put projects into financial jeopardy. The gold mining industry regularly experiences start-ups ranging from good to poor. Problem areas, which affect start-up performance, include shortcomings in ore reserve sampling and testing, equipment design and installation, untrained plant operators, inability to cope with problems which arise, and organization of the maintenance program. An investment, equal to 0.5% to 1.0% of plant capital cost, in programs to prepare for start-up, in advance, is recommended. Investment in such a program will make a good start-up possible. Without it the best result which can normally be expected is a fair start-up. Developers of new gold mines are urged to compare the cost of this investment with the anticipated increase in project net present value. Funds for this investment should be included in feasibility studies.

Cut-off grade is one of the most critical parameters affecting project cash flow. Its sensitivity is due to the number of other parameters that are correlated with any change in its value. Changes in cut-off grade, average grade and ore tonnage vary and they in turn can affect such parameters as capital and replacement costs, recovery, life of the project and operating costs. Perhaps one of the best definitions of cut-off grade is that of Taylor (1), "... any grade that, for any specific reason, is used to separate two courses of action, e.g. to mine or to leave, to mill or to dump ... . Obviously the most likely specific reason is one governed by economics, involving the return of investment and sufficient profit to motivate development and mining of the deposit. In this paper the cut-off grade is defined as that mining limit which will maximise the economic return for a projected mining venture. The following brief literature survey indicates that when computing the optimum cut-off grade there is a need to be able to directly compute the Discounted Cash Flow Rate of Return (DCFRR) or Net Present Value (NPV), as economically as possible, while allowing for parameter dependencies and variation in project structure.
