The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated flotation hydrodynamics to improve the recovery of coarse phosphate. Fluid velocity profile measurements were used to characterize the hydrodynamics within commercial phosphate flotation cells and laboratory flotation cells. The effects of agitation, aeration, and pH on coarse phosphate recovery were measured in the laboratory flotation cells and correlated with the hydrodynamics measurements. Test results revealed that the agitation energy and aeration level had a significant effect upon flotation response. By optimizing these two parameters, 92 pct of the phosphate was recovered in a rougher flotation concentrate grading 28 pct P2O5?

The use of paste technology for underground cemented backfill is widely accepted in the mining industry today as a potentially cost effective alternative to cemented rock and hydraulic slurry fill. While paste backfill is not the appropriate backfilling method for all mines, there are presently 23 operating tailings paste backfill plants throughout the world. This new technology has gained increasing acceptance as a backfill method over the last decade and its use is now expanding into the surface disposal of tailings using the stacked, thickened tailings disposal concept. Over the next 18 months there will be ten new paste plants commissioned in the world. Five of these ten plants will be used exclusively for surface tailings disposal or a combination of surface disposal and underground backfill production. The thickened tailings disposal concept, developed by Dr. Eli Robinsky in the early 1970's, has been in use for decades at several mine sites throughout the world (Kidd Creek Mine site in Northern Ontario), but always utilizing non segregating high density tailings slurry central discharge, stacked tailings placement. With the use of a higher solids content paste, the typical 2-degree beach angle can be increased to ten degrees or more with no runoff water and minimal shrinkage crack development through desiccation. This paper presents the design of the first mine to implement true surface paste disposal, Barrick Gold Corp's Bulyanhulu Mine in Tanzania. The paste system will be commissioned in the first quarter of 2001 allowing performance data to be collected to define the full potential of paste technology for surface tailings disposal.

The tailings produced from the Kirki (Agios Filippos) high sulfidation epithermal deposit processing plant are laminated, weakly cemented and their particle size ranges from fine sand to fine silt. They are mainly composed of milling residues of gangue (quartz, dickite/kaolinite, pyrophyllite, illite); sulfides and secondary minerals (jarosite group minerals, butlerite, anglesite, beudantite and gypsum) are present to a lesser extent. They have high Pb and Zn (average 0.75 % and 0.57 % respectively) and low S (1.04 to 2.92 %), Cu, As, Cd, Ni and Sb content (average 248, 163, 59, 27, 20 g/t respectively). Stagnant waters forming small ponds on the surface of the impoundments exhibit low pH and high heavy metal and sulfate concentrations. Negative Net Neutralization Potential (NNP) characterizes the tailings, indicating moderate to high potential for acid generation. Application of the TCLP test revealed that the tailings are characterized as toxic because of the increased solubility of Pb and Cd. On the other hand, As TCLP solubility is very low.

[The Yarnell gold deposit in the Weaver mining district, Yavapai County, Arizona, occurs in a structurally controlled, hydrothermally altered zone in a 1700 Ma granodioritic intrusive. Both potassic and sericitically altered rocks around and above the low-angle, northeast striking Yarnell fault are known to host economic gold mineralization. A wider envelope of weakly-propylitic altered rock also occurs in this area. During mineralization, strong sericitization accompanied several stages of quartz (±adularia) veining, stockwork formation, localized silicification and potassic replacement, in association with deposition of specularite, pyrite (now oxidized) and gold. The footwall of the fault is also sericitically altered but poorly mineralized. Mineralization along the Yarnell fault continues both northeast and southwest from the main deposit, although the thickness of the zone and associated alter avian envelope diminish away from the orebody A sample of undo formed illite taken from the Yarnell fault zone was K/Ar dated at 69 + 1.6 Ma. This date reflects a minimum age for both mineralization and latest movement on the fault. Gold mineralization is accompanied by modest increases in Ag, As. Cu and Mo content. Both CO2- and H2O- rich fluid inclusions were studied and suggest mesothermal pressures and temperatures of formation for the deposit. Ninety-six reverse circulation holes and four diamond drill holes outline a bulk-minable mineral reserve of'4.1 million tons at 0.051 oz of Au per ton. An additional 2.7 million tons at 0.017 oz of Au per ton occurs in a low-grade zone above and subparallel to the main mineralized zone. Total calculated mineral inventory stands at 6.8 million tons at a grade of 0.038 oz of Au per ton, with a waste-to-ore ratio of 1.45:1. Column leach tests indicate that cyanide heap leach gold recoveries should exceed 70%.]

"The ecological costs related to the various optimized production schemes were calculated based on the designed ultimate pit. Moreover, the influence of the ecological costs on the selection of production schemes was discussed. In one designed pit, a series of geologically optimum pushbacks with sufficiently small increment were produced using the floating cone method founded on the principle of the highest metal content. Then all the pushbacks were reordered by the dynamic network diagram. The production scheme with the maximum NPV route was considered as the optimum one. The ecological impacts produced by mining were quantified and the ecological cost calculation models, which contain the direct eco-value loss, the indirect eco-value loss, the eco-restoration cost and the carbon emission cost were proposed. In one big open pit mine case, various production schemes were optimized and the one with maximum NPV was selected without taking into account the eco-costs. The scheme with the maximum comprehensive profit was obtained by calculating the eco-cost of each scheme. The results showed that the best scheme considered with the eco-cost was not the scheme with the maximum NPV. Therefore, the eco-cost presents the effect on the selection of the best production scheme.Introduction Optimizing production scheme is to determine the mining quantities of ore and rock, the pushing position of stope each year, and maximize the NPV of mine. In the theory, production scheming optimization has gone through trial and error (Pana and Carlson 1966), linear programming method (Johnson 1968), mixed integer programming (Gershon 1983), integer mapping (Kim and Cai 1990), dynamic programming et al (Gu et al 2014). In recent years, the study on production scheduling optimization has been focused on two aspects. On the one hand, the study is to solve the investment risk caused by the uncertainties of economic and geological environment (Ramazan and Dimitrakopoulos 2013, Marcotte and Caron 2010, Lamghari and Dimitrakopoulos 2012, Godoy and Dimitrakopoulos 2004, Benndorf and Shishvan 2014). On the other hand, the emphasis of the study was on reducing the problems for the optimization algorithm, to make it more efficient and practical (Cullenbine et al 2011, Shishvan and Sattarvand 2015, Askari-Nasab et al 2011, Nasab et al 2010). However, different production schemes cause different damage of mine land and pollutant emission, thus triggering environment problem. INTRODUCTION The concern of occupational exposure to diesel exhaust pollutants is an important workplace issue for the mining industry. During the last three decades of diesel operations at Inco, a significant amount of research and improvement has been made in the area of work environment, and effective diesel operation. This paper will review the experience gained by Inco's Ontario Division from the implementation and the use of modern engines, improved fuel quality, and the exhaust control technology, coupled with adherence to proper maintenance and ventilation design and practices. Past monitoring practices and the current occupational monitoring program at lnco are outlined. A major new research initiative involving multi-stake holders in diesel performance is described. MINING IN THE SUDBURY AREA The discovery of nickel-copper ore in the Sudbury area dates back to the year 1856. The existence of this orebody was noticed when a strong compass deflection was observed by a provincial surveyor. This discovery, even though documented in official re- ports, failed to arouse any public attention at that time. In 1884, a rock-cut was blasted through a small hill near the village of Sudbury to permit laying track for the Canadian Pacific Railway (Boldt 1967). The rock-cut uncovered a body of massive sulfides with a copper content of over nine percent. The mineralization is concentrated along the outer margin of the Sudbury Basin, an oval-shaped structure having a dimension of 55 x 95 kilometres. The ore extends down-dip to to at least 3000 metres below the surface. The mining methods at lnco can be divided into two categories: "filled-stope" and 'bulk" mining. This division, in the broad sense, may also reflect the environmental conditions of the mine. In the past, the selection of a mining method was based on the size, shape, grade and the strength of the ore and its surroundings. The recent development of improved technology and mining equipment permitted wider application of low cost bulk mining methods. UNDERGROUND DIESEL EQUIPMENT The first diesel-powered machine, a 145-horsepower scooptram, was put into operation in March 1966, in a cut-and-fill stoping complex at Frood Mine. The number of diesel machines underground in the Inco, Ontario Division, mines was increased to 360 units by 1971,550 in 1977 (Rutherford 1978), and over 830 diesel-powered units in 1995. The following list indicates current mobile diesel equipment. LHD 194 Loaders 81 Trucks 28 Jumbo Drills 78 Personnel Carrier 101 Service Equipment 155 Locomotives 50 Bolters 30 Scissor Lift 113 About 20 percent of the LHD and truck units are equipped with electronic fuel controlled engines. COMPOSITION OF DIESEL EXHAUST Diesel exhaust contains hundreds of pollutants (Watts 19921, including components of unburned fuel and lubricating oil and products of incomplete combustion of the fuel and oil. These pollutants are emitted either as gases or as particles. Gaseous pollutants include carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur ox- ides, as well as a variety of organic compounds, such as hydro- carbons, aldehydes, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. The particle phase, also known as diesel particulate matter (DPM), is the filterable portion of diesel exhaust. Figure 1 depicts the trimodal particle size distribution that arises from different mechanisms of aerosol generation (Cantrell and Rubow 1992). Primary combustion aerosols, including diesel exhaust aerosol, are formed as very small particles (in the 0.001 to 0.08 micrometre range), but physical mechanisms such as condensation and coagulation quickly transfer the aerosol mass from the nuclei mode to the accumulation mode. These processes result in a mass median diameter of approximately 0.2 micrometres for diesel particulate matter, and 90% of the particles are less than 1.0 micrometre in size. These particles have a high surface area, permitting the adsorption of different substances produced during combustion. Mechanically generated aerosols, on the other hand, typically contain particles greater than 1 micrometre in diameter. The particle phases of diesel exhaust contain three components (Bagley, et al, 1996) shown by Figure 2, namely: a carbon- aceous fraction composed mainly of solid-carbon particles, a sulfate fraction containing small hydrated sulfate particles, and a soluble fraction that contains compounds that are soluble in organic solvents and are adsorbed or condensed onto carbon core particles. These compounds consist primarily of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons and PAH's and may contribute 15% to 45% of the weight of the total particulate matter (Schuetzle, 1983). The control of these pollutants is necessary to ensure a healthy work environment. 1. Coal Preparation Terms (General) 1.1 Coal preparation-collectively, physical and mechanical processes applied to coal to make it suitable for a particular use. 1.2 Run of mine (ROM coal)-coal produced by mining operations, before screening, crushing, or preparation. 1.3 Raw coal-coal that has received no preparation other than possibly screening or crushing. 1.4 Raw coal feed-raw coal supplied to a plant or machine, in which it undergoes some form of preparation. 1.5 Coal cleaning-the treatment of coal to lower the mineral matter content (ash). 1.6 Cleaned coal; clean coal-coal produced by a cleaning process (wet or dry). 1.7 Middlings-a product of coal preparation that, by reason of its ash content, is intermediate between coal and discard. It follows therefore that the relative density of middlings is intermediate between those of coal and discard. Middlings may be reprocessed. 1.8 True middlings; bone comparatively high ash particles so nearly homogeneous that their quality cannot readily be improved by crushing and recleaning. 1.9 False middlings; interbanded middlings-middliigs in which the particles consist of bands of coal and shale, and from which the coal may be liberated by crushing 1.10 Refuse-waste material in the raw coal which the cleaning process removes. An industrial site near the centre of a historical town in Flanders is characterized by chromium(VI) contamination of the groundwater. Since the potential for natural attenuation was not sufficient to control the groundwater plume as observed from different analyses like pH, Eh, soil oxidation and reduction capacity, the feasibility of site remediation based on in-situ bioprecipitation of chromium was examined in lab microcosm studies. By creating reducing conditions by addition of a carbon source in the groundwater, chromium(VI) can be biologically reduced to chromium(III), which can form an insoluble precipitate of chromium(III) hydroxide. Microcosms contained contaminated groundwater and aquifer samples that were collected and manipulated under anaerobic conditions. Three different carbon sources were screened for their effectiveness: molasses from sugar beet production, molasses form starch production (protamylasses) based on potato juice and lactate. The different concentrations of sugar molasses were used to determine the optimal conditions. A range of parameters was monitored at regular time intervals for a period of six months such as chromium(VI) and chromium(III), DOC, methane, pH, Eh. A rapid conversion of chromium(VI) to chromium(III) was observed for all conditions tested. However, extensive removal of chromium from the groundwater by precipitation was only achieved for a limited number of conditions. In general, lactate was found to be the most effective carbon source, slightly better than the lowest concentration of sugar molasses that was tested, which itself was more effective than molasses based on potato. Higher concentrations of molasses, although causing a steeper decline in redox potential, resulted in less effective Cr removal. Typically, the fermentation of molasses results in acidification and this drop in pH may hinder the formation of insoluble chromium(III)hydroxides. It may also be possible that certain components of the molasses form soluble complexes with chromium(III). For lactate, no significant drop in pH was observed. Following the laboratory microcosm tests, the stability of the chromium precipitates was examined by performing a sequential extraction on the microcosm materials. These were performed under redox conditions which were similar to the ones observed in the field. Since the outcome of these tests was positive, a pilot scale test was implemented in the field in April 2005. Two different substrates, the cheap waste product sugar molasses and lactate are being injected creating two different impact zones and typical parameters are monitored. Frequent re-injections were important to maintain reduced conditions and are carried out three-weekly up to now. To study the stability of precipitates formed, mesocosm socks containing aquifer material were installed in the monitoring wells and harvested at regular intervals. Results of this pilot test will be presented and compared to the laboratory results. Based on the success of this field test, a full scale process will be designed and implemented as remediation strategy.

The conference will be held in lieu of the UCA’s biennial North American Tunneling Conference and will bring the strengths and resources of the UCA of SME and the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA). The result will be a conference with unmatched technical programming and a showcase of more than 200 exhibiting companies.A program committee led by Randy Essex of Mott MacDonald, Lonnie Jacobs of Frontier Kemper Constructors, Michael Mooney, of the Colorado School of Mines, Priscilla Nelson, of the Colorado School of Mines and Amanda Elioff of Parsons Brinkerhoff formed the program committee and worked for more than two years to build the program. The result is four technical sessions with five tracks in each session and 185 oral presentations.“One challenge was the sheer size of the group that would be assembled, perhaps 2,500 attendees or more, and the large number of abstracts we were likely to receive,” said Essex. “ We investigated extending the conference a fourth day, but that was not workable with the Moscone Center. We settled on having five concurrent technical tracks – something that has not been attempted in past NAT or RETC conferences to my knowledge. The next step was to develop suggested session titles that would span the breadth of subjects that would interest conference attendees as well as serve the conference theme.”"

INTRODUCTION Perspective The phrase "minerala resource appraisal" is widely and loosely used to refer to any quantitative description of a naturally occurring source of fuels, metals, or nonmetals. This leads to confusion when mineral resources are so conceived, for the term refers generically to information on stocks-mineral endowment, resources, reserves, and potential supply-that differ in ways that are important in economic analysis. Mineral resource and other stock measures- these are not flows, e.g., the supply of minerals-have precise technical meanings, which are presented in this paper. Quotation marks are used to separate the nontechnical use of mineral resource from the technical. The term appraisal also leads to some con- fusion because it too is loosely used. When an appraisal employs probability and statistical methods, the appropriate term is estimationb, not appraisal or assessment. This paper presents a conceptual framework or mineral resource information which renders technical, or well defined, relationships of mineral endowment to physical attributes of the earth's crust and earth processes, as distinct from economic values, and identifies estimation approaches that lead to different economic measures of stocks and flows. An important result of this approach is the distinction between the relevance of mineral resource information to economic and policy issues about potential sup- ply (stocks) and dynamic supply (flows across time). With regard to policy analysis, this paper recognizes that mineral resource information has a cost as well as an imputed value. Such a treatment implies that there is an optimum state of resource ignorance, or enlightenment, for a given policy issue and that the relevant economic issue is the selection of that information strategy and appraisal methodology that is indicated by the optimum state. Until the initiation of the OPEC oil embargo, the demand for information on mineral re- sources and potential supply was limited to occasional studies commissioned by Congress or the President of the United States. In these, mineral and energy resources remained loosely de- scribed. When quantitative estimates were supplied, they were not rigorously made, and the estimates and the methodology accordingly escaped close scrutiny. Usually, neither the geo- logical nor economic bases for estimation were carefully described or critically examined. The imposition by OPEC nations of the embargo on oil caused a sudden change in the public and scientific demands for specific 'resource" appraisals, especially of oil and of uranium. These

As a follow-up to a laboratory study, a pilot scale column for the flotation of coarse particles was designed and then tested in two different applications. In the first test, the concentration of a coarse phosphate ore (normally beneficiated by skin flotation in spirals) was carried out in a flotation plant in Florida. In the second pilot test, the column was used as a scavenger cell in the coarse flotation section of a potash beneficiation plant in Saskatchewan, Canada. Particle size of the phosphate feed was of the order of 0.6-1.0 mm and the potash feed 1-3 mm. The column was 1 feet diameter and was fed at rates between 0.5 to 1.4 tph. The effect of operating variables such as air and water flow rates, bubble size, frother concentration, residence time, sparger, etc were evaluated. The most important factors in column performance were found to be bubble size, air flow rate and the thickness of the froth bed. Best results were obtained in the absence of a froth bed, with low air flow rates and with small bubbles. The paper presents comparative performance and discusses details of the column design. Phosphate recoveries in the column were better than 90% whereas the conventional skin flotation circuit normally yields about 60% recovery for a comparable concentrate grade. Potash recovery from the tailings of the conventional flotation circuit was as high as 42% recovery. Particle size distribution of the potash concentrate was coarse enough to meet requirements for potash fertilizer.

Today the standard method for grinding ore is the wet process. This is mainly due to the fact that the downstream process is wet and considering the total circuit dry grinding is not the most eco­nomical method for the comminution of the ore. Presently in gold ore processing dry grinding is only applied in cases where whole ore roasting is required downstream from the milling plant or if organic carbonaceous matters and sulfides are the primary reasons for the refractoriness. Since dry ore can be fed to the roaster, a dry grinding mill can advantageously be applied. In cases where d1y grinding could be applied advantageously for instance if the ore contains water soluble material and wet grinding is not possible there are serious concerns prevailing within the industty against this technology due to several reasons. Besides of the aspects as discussed later in this paper, there are several plants in operation with little success and considerable operational prob­lems. The reasons for this often lie in the fact that the several com­ponents of such a plant are bought from independent sources with­out considering the system requirements. It is essential that the dry grinding plants require accurate design between drying, pneumatic transport and grinding of the ore in the circuit. This paper will address some of these concerns raised in the industiy from a mill vendor's view along with discussing the development for the selection and configuration of the various dty grinding circuits.

Introduction Coal is the US's largest indigenous fossil fuel resource and is used to power 57% of this country's electrical generation (NCA, 1986). Congress, however, is focusing its attention on the acid rain issue and public sentiment is leaning toward further curtailments of SO2, NO, and particulates from utility and industrial coal-burning facilities. The Cool Water plant has proven that integrated-gasification-combined-cycle (IGCC) technology can reliably produce economical electrical power while limiting SO2, NOx, and particulates to a rate of only one-tenth of the federal New Source Performance Standards for coal-fired plants. Process water requirements at Cool Water are 40% less than those of a conventional coal-fired utility plant equipped with flue-gas desulfurization units for stack gas scrubbing, thus reducing waste water treatment requirements (Clark and Shorter, 1985). The IGCC technology employed at Cool Water has now been demonstrated to efficiently convert coal to electricity in an environmentally superior fashion. The Cool Water Coal Gasification Program is an unincorporated California association of six partners whose commitment is proving that the integration of gasification with combined cycle power production (IGCC) is commercially viable and environmentally safe. The 120 MW Cool Water plant began commercial production on June 24, 1984. The Program is operating it for a five-year commercial demonstration period. The effect of the stability and rheological properties of magnetite dense medium on the separation performance of a 6" dense medium cyclone (DMC) is studied with the use of fine density tracers. The tests in which different size fractions of magnetite are used to prepare the dense media reveal that at low medium densities (<1.5 s.g.), the best separation is achieved when using the magnetite with intermediate particle sizes (du3.2=18 11m). At medium densities above 1.5 s.g., however, it is beneficial to use coarser magnetite. With the fine magnetite dense medium, an increase in medium density results in a decrease in separation efficiency. With the coarse magnetite, an opposite trend is observed; the separation efficiency is improved with increasing medium density. An accurate cutpoint control is critical in gravity separation. The cutpoint shift for coarse feed particles is found to decrease with increasing medium stability (density). It assumes values close to zero in a highly stable fine dense medium. When the size of the treated particles is small (<0.5 mm), the cutpoint shift is mainly determined by medium rheology. With increasing medium density, a continuous increase in cutpoint shift is observed.

The overall success of steep slope (>20°) contour mining is dependent upon many factors. The major factor is the selection of the mining method that best suits the premining site conditions both environmentally and economically. These conditions can be divided into three major categories: 1) Geometric Conditions --machine limitations, slope stability restrictions, erosion capacity, among others; 2) Physical Conditions--material properties, rock strengths, diggability, driving surfaces, among others; 3) Chemical Conditions --acid/base relationships, blending or selective placement of overburden, among others. This paper incorporates these conditions through conceptually modeling compliance oriented contour mining methods; in particular Haulback methods, utilizing: 1) the Front-End Loader (FEL)/Truck; 2) Tractor Scrapers; and 3) Combined FEL-Truck/Scraper. Engineering analyses including machine selection, sequencing, ease of varying production rates, slope requirements (for stability and running surfaces), drainage requirements and many others can be performed after the geometric constraints dictated by in-situ conditions and regulatory requirements have been conceptualized. Once all generalized geometries have been established, reduction to idealized three-dimensional views is achieved. These are then reduced to two-dimensional symbolic models, mainly plan views, but also elevations and sections. Equipment activities and operations are then conveniently overlayed. INTRODUCTION Increasing a miner&apos;s chance of surviving a disaster requires advance planning for emergencies, adequate training of personnel, and the provision of proper survival equipment. It is extremely important that fires and toxic gases be detected early, and that warning systems such as stench, audible and visual alarms, and communications systems be provided to allow timely escape. However, situations do occur where timely warning is not provided and immediate escape is not possible, regardless of the precautions that are taken. Under such circumstances, a combination of new per¬sonal protective devices and old techniques can provide protection that is adequate to save a miner&apos;s life. SELF-RESCUE EQUIPMENT Self-rescuers are devices which provide a short-term supply of respirable air under the potentially lethal con¬ditions following a mine disaster. Functioning either as filtration devices for the elimination of carbon monoxide (CO) or as oxygen supplies, self-rescuers allow an endangered miner a limited amount of time in which to effect an escape or reach a place of temporary safety. Carbon-Monoxide Self-Rescuers For almost 50 years, filtration self-rescuers have protected miners&apos; lives following explosions or fires. Designed to eliminate carbon monoxide from inhaled air, the first of these devices was approved in the 1920s and has evolved into the two units that are approved today-the Mine Safety Appliance (MSA) W-65 and the Draeger 810. Both of these units rely on the cata¬lytic conversion of very toxic carbon monoxide to rela¬tively safe levels of carbon dioxide (CO,). As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, both of these filtration self-rescuers operate in the same manner. On inhalation, the mine air passes through both coarse and fine filters that remove the dust, preventing the dust from coating the chemical beds or entering the miner&apos;s mouth. The air then passes over a drying agent that removes water vapor; this is required to prevent the water vapor from poisoning the catalyst. Subsequently, the dried air passes over the Hopcalite catalyst, where carbon monoxide is converted to carbon dioxide. Then, the air passes through a heat exchanger that reduces the temperature of the inhaled air. Finally, the air is inhaled by the user. Air exhaled by the user passes through the heat ex¬changer and exits the device through an expiratory valve. Both units of this type are subject to certain limita¬tions: 1) The units do not protect the user against oxygen¬deficient air; when air is inhaled through this type of self-rescuer, the device only removes the carbon mon¬oxide. If the mine air contains less than 15% oxygen, anoxia is inevitable. Symptoms of anoxia include dizzi¬ness, shortness of breath, quickened pulse, and deeper and more rapid respiration while the victim is at rest. During heavy exertion such as would be expected dur¬ ing escape efforts, a 15% oxygen level can cause loss of consciousness. 2) The units do not protect against excessive levels of carbon dioxide. Available data on carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide concentrations following explosions or fires are limited, but there are indications that the carbon monoxide concentration can rise to 2% and the carbon dioxide concentration can reach 5 or 6% of the mine air (by volume). In some situations, the in¬haled air could contain up to 6 or 7% carbon dioxide. At a carbon dioxide concentration higher than 2%, breathing patterns can be affected adversely. At a con¬centration of 6 or 7%, the effects include severe respira¬tory distress, with unconsciousness resulting from exer¬tion such as that needed for escape activities. 3) The units do not protect against high inhalation temperatures. The catalytic oxidation of carbon mon¬oxide to carbon dioxide is an exothermic reaction that evolves a large amount of heat. As the carbon monoxide concentration increases, the temperature of the inhaled air also increases. Available data show that above 1.5% carbon monoxide, the air inhaled through some self¬rescuers can be as high as 90°C (194°F). At those

In the USA, risk-based decision making has not been a common approach to tunnel safety in the past, but this is changing, as concepts such as “equivalency” in the NFPA 502 framework gain acceptance in the USA and elsewhere. In other regions, in particular in Europe, risk assessment techniques have been used for nearly two decades in many jurisdictions as an additional tool to complement the application of prescriptive guidelines and support decisions related to tunnel safety. After some initial difculties these methods are meanwhile a well-established element of tunnel safety management. There are several tools available which have been practically applied and further developed over years, such as the Austrian tunnel risk model TuRisMo, or the PIARC owned DG-QRAM model. Whereas TuRisMo is a holistic, system-based model, which is best suited to quantify and assess re risk and associated mitigation measures, DG-QRAM focusses on the risks related to the transport of hazardous materials. Depending on the objectives and the scope of the investigation and the regulatory environment tunnel risk assessment tools are in use for different purposes, mainly to demonstrate a sufcient level of safety and to decide on and select additional risk mitigation measures. The international eperience substantiates that the general approach is eible and that the methods and tools are mature and can be applied for different problems in different environments. First case studies like the risk study on conditions and permissibility of the transport of hazardous materials through the Eisenhower-Johnson-Memorial Tunnel in Colorado demonstrate the applicability of a risk-based concept for decision making in the US-American environment.

In this section the chemical, physical, and mechanical principles of hydrometallurgical processes are developed and reviewed. Plant practice is not discussed other than to note the metals which are processed using the various systems that are available. These notations will permit the reader to refer to the appropriate section in Part II of the Handbook for specific details on a particular metal or mineral. The equipment used to accomplish the desired unit operation is de¬scribed. Comparative data are presented to illustrate performance characteristics of unit operations, process, and equipment. The economic efficiency of individual processes is outlined. Some of the chapters contain material that is covered in detail in other sections of the Handbook Such chapters are developed only sufficiently to indicate the specific application of the techniques to hydrometallurgical processes. In this section considerable cross-referencing to the other related sections has been done.

Three high performance TBM&apos;s equipped with large diameter (483mm) disc cutters are currently operating in Norway. This paper summarizes the design philosophy, field performance and ongoing technical development of these cutters. Included are discussions of the early problems encountered with their usage and the solutions to these problems that have been developed. Also included are discussions of the penetration rates and cutter usages observed. From this data it is concluded that high performance TBM&apos;s with large diameter cutters can produce significant improvements in both overall performance and in cutter costs under hard rock conditions.
