A goal programming-based worker scheduling model has been incorporated in the Mine Management Support System (MMSS) for assigning workers to prioritized jobs on a shift basis. In the model the accomplishment of each regular and non-regular job is a goal. The objective is minimization of the deviations away from the goals. A number of coefficients are used as premultipliers of the decision variables in order to address practical considerations associated with the utilization of workers and the requirements of jobs. Some of these premultipliers will be updated expertly within MMSS, timely updating the statuses of the dynamic parameters.

In the processing of manganiferous ore, it is useful to control whether the manganese (Mn) goes to the iron product to produce ferromanganese, or to the slag for extraction as a high Mn product. This can be done by manipulating the thermodynamic conditions for manganese oxide(MnO) reduction to control whether it remains as MnO or converts to metallic Mn. Results are presented showing that during production of iron nuggets, reduction of manganese oxide (MnO) can be controlled by changing the furnace temperature and reductant composition appropriately.

The Federal Bureau of Mines examined tailings samples from 13 western copper operations to determine the potential for recovering rutile. Results showed that six of the samples contained sufficient liberated titania to be considered potential sources. One sample contained 0.75 percent Ti02 or 0.40 percent liberated rutile. Batch flotation studies developed a procedure that recovered 70 percent of the liberated rutile at a grade of 34.7 percent TiO2. Sulfuric acid leaching studies on 12 of the samples dissolved 100 to 2,200 grams Cu per ton of tailings; leaching of the slimes showed slightly more copper was dissolved, 1,800 to 3,300 grams Cu per ton of minus lo-micrometer material. Bulk sulfide flotation of nine of the samples resulted in concentrates that contained 0.38 to 2.0 percent Cu and 0.7 to 2.1 and 6.9 to 42.9 grams per ton Au and Ag, respectively.

Over the past four years, the Coal Research Bureau of West Virginia University has presented a number of papers on operations research in the coal industry before various AIME meetings and meetings of other societies. These papers have been followed up by further presentations in the technical press. The emphasis of all of these papers has been to demonstrate applications of operations research to the solution of numerous types of coal industry problems. In each case, effort has been made to demonstrate that operations research does not require extensive knowledge of computer science or use of sophisticated higher mathematics. In fact, for most applications, satisfactory results can be obtained by a single individual in a minimum of time with no aids other than a pencil and paper and a knowledge of basic arithmetic. The most recent efforts by the Coal Research Bureau have been directed toward the continuing industry problem of optimizing the location of mining facilities. Preliminary work in this area was presented before the Central Appalachian Section of AIME and subsequently published in the May, 1972, issue of Coal Age. This initial presentation illustrated techniques for determining optimum locations of facilities based upon material transport effort under the assumption of constant cost per ton mile of haulage effort. The present paper will expand upon this earlier work and introduce economic factors. In the design of a mine or mining system, careful consideration must be given to the sites selected for each element of the system. Optimum placement of facilities is vital to minimize capital and operating cost. Thus, barring unfavorable geological conditions or other exceptional factors, facilities should be located at those points which represent the minimum cumulative cost over the life of the property. Most cost factors are independent, or essentially independent of the location of fixed facilities. The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. (P&M) is expanding a combination of surface and underground coal mining operation in Northeastern New Mexico. The York Canyon Complex, located 35 miles west of Raton, New Mexico, is aggressively pre-paring for increased production while meeting present requirements. Surface mining activities in four separate mining areas are preparing the complex for additional markets. Drag-line, truck/shovel, highwall miner and contour stripping are surface mining methods currently planned. In addition, P&M will move a Marion 8200 dragline from Kansas to the York Canyon site, finish constructing a $20 million coal preparation plant, and complete conveyor upgrades to the existing underground mine. Perlite is not a trade name but a generic term for naturally occurring siliceous volcanic rock. A distinguishing feature which sets perlite apart from other volcanic glasses is that when heated to a suitable point in its softening range, it expands 5 to 20 times its original volume. This expansion is due to the presence of 2% to 6% combined water in the crude perlite rock. When quickly heated above 1600°F (871°C) crude perlite pops in a manner similar to popcorn. The combined water vaporizes and creates countless tiny bubbles in the heat softened glassy particles. It is these tiny glass sealed bubbles which account for the amazing lightweight and other exceptional physical properties of expanded perlite. The bulk densities of the expanded perlite generally range from 3 pounds per cubic foot (48 Kg M3) to 10 pounds per cubic foot (160 Kg H3).

Procedures are discussed to determine if a waste material can become acid producing when left exposed to the environment. When wastes proves to be acid producing, methods are described that can be used to determine the characteristics of the effluents produced from a commercial size waste dump, taking into consideration that large quantities of pollutants can accumulate inside a waste dump during dry periods. The length of such dry periods and the quantity of rainfall greatly affect effluent characteristics.

Several wall rock porphyry or pyrometascmatic copper deposits occur within the metamorphosed Paleozoic formations along the northern and eastern flanks of the Little Dragoon Mountains. Rocks ranging in age from Precambrian to Recent occur in the area. The Tertiary age Texas Canyon Quartz Monzonite intruded the sedimentary section in the eastern half of the range metamorphosing the Paleozoic carbonate units to tactites composed of garnet, diopside, and tremolite. Copper, zinc, and molybdenum minerals deposited in sites which are structurally controlled and stratigraphically favorable. Because the deposits are covered by alluvium, the information on structure, alteration, and mineralization is based upon a study of the diamond drilling programs. The mineralized district can be divided into four areas: 1) The Johnson Camp copper-zinc deposits; 2) The Dragoon copper deposit; 3) The I-10 copper-molybdenum deposit; 4) The Strong & Harris copper-zinc deposit. On the southwest end of the range beneath alluvial cover, the Cretaceous Bisbee Group was thrust over Precambrian and Paleozoic formations. The Tertiary Texas Canyon Quartz Monzonite intruded and metamorphosed them. In the upper plate, the Cretaceous sediments near the intrusive were metamorphosed to metaquartzite and andalusite and sillimanite schists. In the lower plate the Martin and Horquilla formations were marbleized. The lower Abrigo was metamorphosed to epidote rich calc-silicate tactites and biotite hornfels. A composite geologic cross section, based upon diamond drilling,, through the Dragoon copper deposit is shown in Fig. 1. The geologic events which formed this deposit are: 1. A faulted section of Precambrian Pioneer formation and diabase and Cambrian Bolsa and Abrigo formations was thrust over Pennsylvanian Horquilla formation. Computer simulation models of working mines can be of great benefit to the mining engineer. Such models have been used in mine planning (how many trucks/shovels to have, when to add new equipment, etc.), mine design (should a dispatch system be purchased, where is the optimum location for mine equipment, etc.). A simulation model can be thought of as a dynamic representation of the mine and can easily be changed to reflect a wide variety of different situation. Often a major problem for the engineer is how to present the results of the simulation study. Using PROOF(R) animation it is now possible to interface the results of the simulation and project them onto a computer screen in cartoon fashion.

Kerr-McGee Coal Corporation has used diesel face haulage and support equipment at its dual-seam Galatia Mine in Southern Illinois since production activities commenced in 1983. The mine began production from its lower seam, the Harrisburg No. 5 coal seam, in October 1983 and from the upper Herrin No.6 coal seam in April 1985. Before production began, the company developed a program designed to make use of the flexibility offered by diesel equipment. While productivity was an important goal, the top priority of the program was to provide a safe and healthy work environment for the miners. Management believed that high productivity would naturally follow. History has proven this belief to be true.

Selective fatty acid flotation of carbonate gangue from sedimentary apatites was achieved under acidic pH's without a specific apatite depressant and without conditioning the pulp with the collector. Concentrates (35-38% P205, 0.8-1% MgO) with high recoveries (80-85%) were produced from Indian and Chinese dolomitic ores. The calcareous and/or dolomitic-siliceous phosphate ores of South Florida and Utah required two flotation stages: one for carbonate removal, as mentioned above, and the other for phosphate recovery from siliceous gangue. Preliminary tests on the South Florida ore gave concentrates analyzing 29% P205 and 0.8% MgO with a P205 recovery of 76%. Data are also included showing the applicability of the process to the dolomitic-calcareous-siliceous Western U.S. phosphate ore from Utah. A concentrate obtained from this ore assayed 30% P205 and about 1% MaO.

Due to the remote locations of the mining projects and the demand for long transmission lines to provide electrical power, mining sites often operate with poor network power quality and low short circuit capacity. In order to cope up with this situation, more and more mining projects are considering the installation of appropriately designed Synchronous Condensers(SC) together with Power Factor Correction and Harmonic Filter System(PFC&HFS). The installation of these power quality equipments is viewed as a technological advancement in the mining application. An adequate level of short circuit power is essential and has to be ensured for the safe and reliable operation of especially large cycloconverter driven gearless mill drive systems used for grinding application. Increase in plant short circuit power is generally achieved by lowering the impedance of the supplying network. The SC also provides smooth voltage control during mill starting or major load trips, thereby regulating the plant voltage within the required limits. This paper will explore the impact, technical advantage and reasoning for the selection of the advanced hybrid technology mentioned above, in order to cope with the power system challenges for future mining projects. It also highlights the potential problems and how to address them carefully.

The carbonatite orebody in Jacupiranga is situated some 230km (140-mi) southwest of Sao Paulo and is mined by Serrana S/A de Mineragao, producing an apatite concentrate for fertilizer production and a calcite tailing for cement manufacture (see Figure 1). The orebody (Table 1) is mined by open pit and the total production is 4.5 million mt/year of carbonatite ore with a further 2.2 million mt/year of overburden. The carbonatite low-grade ore (Table 2) is fed to the concentration plant at 460 mt/h , comprising of four parallel lines of grinding, by rod mills 2.7m x 4.5m (9 x 15-ft), operating in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. The grinding circuit product is deslimed in four stages using hydrocyclones and the deslimed product is conditioned with corn starch and subsequently floated, using fatty acids as collector to, recover the apatite.

It has long been understood that extended occupational exposures to respirable mine dusts can lead to chronic lung disease. In underground coal mines, CWP and silicosis are major concerns. While there have been many studies aimed at understanding total dust concentrations and silica content associated with different mining conditions (e.g., locations/occupations within a mine, cutting methods, geologic strata), little research has been completed to more comprehensively characterize respirable dust (i.e., by particle composition, size distributions, shapes). This preliminary study sought to characterize dust from an underground coal mine in Central Appalachia using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray (SEM-EDX). Respirable dust samples were collected from various locations in the study mine, and individual dust particles were identified and classified by mineral type. A continuous personal dust monitor was also used to estimate total respirable dust concentrations during sampling. Here we report initial results of this work, and discuss advantages and challenges of particle-level characterization of mine dusts in terms of occupational health research.

Setting up a plant sampling procedure by simply applying the usual statistical sampling theory was questionable. Two sampling concepts were considered in the sampling study: o a sufficient number of assays can be taken such that the average determined from these individual samples represents a known quantity of ore. o a sufficient weight of sample can be taken such that when assayed it represents a known quantity of ore. The test program included evaluation of sampling techniques, sample preparation and analytical methods. The overall sampling program is depicted in Figure 2.

Response surface methodology is a well-known and powerful technique for determining optimum conditions in flotation systems. One disadvantage is the onerous task of the numerical calculations and curve platting. This paper describes a system in which the investigator simply selects the range of several flotation variables after which the design of the experiment, data analysis, generation of response surface equations, and response surface plats are automatically carried out using a digital computer and a computer-driven curve plotter. Several typical response surfaces of important variables in phosphate flotation are presented as examples. An overview of the flow charting of the system is provided in the addendum.

Surface subsidence caused by underground longwall mining is a very complicated process in time and space, influencing building and structures on the surface of the mining area, including houses, pipelines, and highway. The field monitoring data of surface subsidence are essential for protecting them. This study investigated the dynamic and residual subsidence characteristics of both the surface and the highway over a 730-day monitoring period on a longwall panel. Three monitoring lines (Lines 1–3) were established to monitor the subsidence process, and three stages were identified: initial stage of surface subsidence, active period of surface subsidence, and residual subsidence deformation stage. The maximum subsidence value on the highway (1,786 mm) was smaller than that on the surface (2,094 mm), and the maximum subsidence velocity on the highway (41.7–50.8 mm/day) was also lower than that on the surface (66.7 mm/day). During the residual subsidence deformation stage, both the surface and highway subsidence velocities decreased to below 0.6 mm/day. Furthermore, differences in subsidence characteristics between the surface and the highway were analyzed, with the subsidence value on the highway always being less than that on the surface, while the subsidence velocity during the residual deformation stage was not always lower. This could be attributed to the influence of dynamic loads from vehicles, which could induce additional residual subsidence on the highway. Further investigation into this phenomenon will be conducted in future research.

On the other hand, industrial minerals, including talc, are doing quite well. The profitability of industrial minerals has sparked considerable interest on the part of many companies in expanding into industrial minerals. Our company is one of those actively seeking to expand its position in industrial minerals. It is appropriate that the A.I.M.E. asked me to speak to you regarding entry into the talc business. Copper has held up extremely well as we have moved through the trough of the economic cycle. In the aluminum, lead and zinc industries at least half of the Western World production was unable to cover its operating costs at the prices prevailing throughout most of 1991. In copper, less than 10 percent of production ran in the red last year. Most of that was in Peru where the government has not allowed its currency to devalue at the same pace as inflation. Thus, mining company revenues in local currency terms have risen very modestly while costs have escalated tremendously. Excluding such governmentally imposed distortions, virtually every mine in the Western World ran at a profit last year. While copper producers have to be extremely happy about staying in the black through the trough of the consumption cycle, consumers have to be worried. They must be asking themselves, "If copper held at over $1.00 in a year when consumption declined, how high will prices go when demand picks up?" Consumers are accustomed to paying high prices at the peak of the cycle, but they are also accustomed to paying low prices at the trough of the cycle. What went wrong this time?

There may be someone here who is not required to run his equipment at its maximum capacity. There may be some fortunate enough to have more crushers than needed, wider conveyor belts than required, and other mill equipment equally oversize. If so, then this paper will have no interest for him; but if most of you are in the situation we in the aggregate producing industry are in, then you probably wish to crowd your mill equipment to its limit. When you do this you must watch for block-up and overloads of all sorts. You need more eyes than you have to guard the critical points. The human eyes that now do nothing much, but watch should be freed for more productive work.
