X. Huang (1997) recently suggested a poroelastic model for simulating the hydraulic fracturing breakdown pressure. His paper began with a discussion questioning Haimson and Fairhurst's (H&F) model. He claimed that the H&F model failed to lead to the Hubbert and Willis (H&W) model as[ a --> 0.] Huang also tried to explain why the H&F model could only work for special types of rock conditions. He pointed out that one possible reason could be that the Terzaghi's effective-stress concept had been adopted. The H&F model (Haimson and Fairhurst, 1969) was derived under the conditions that the borehole wall is fully penetrated (pp = pi) and a drained state is realized (steady pore-pressure field). Cui et al. (1997a) demonstrated that, under drained conditions, the total stresses in the penetrating poroelastic model (identical to the H&F model) degenerate into their counterparts in the elastic model (identical to the H&W model) as [a -- 0.] However, the effective-stress conditions are different for both of these models, because different pore-pressure conditions at the borehole wall were adopted. In the H&W model, p = po was assumed, i.e., the pore pressure field is not disturbed; but pp = pi was assumed in the H&F model. Assuming that Terzaghi's effective-stress controls tensile failure (that was the hypothesis adopted in both the H&F and the H&W models), only the following two special drained poroelastic cases may degenerate into the H&W model for very small a: • when the pore pressure at the borehole wall remains at the same level as the virgin pore pressure for a penetrating model and when the borehole wall is simply impermeable (i.e., the nonpenetrating model, Cui et al., 1997b). Therefore, simply setting a = 0 in the H&F model generally does not lead to the same problem described by the H&W model. On the other hand, when the porepressure boundary conditions do not correspond to the ones in the H&W model, a degeneration of the poroelastic model to the H&W model as [a – 0] should be questionable. The pore pressure at the borehole wall is generally dependent on the injection-fluid pressure and the penetrating conditions at the borehole wall, such as the existence of a filter-cake. For an impermeable wall, pp is independent of Pi, and it is basically an unknown [(how¬ever, pp -- po as t --oo).] For a fully permeable wall, pp is the same as Pi. Between these two extremes, pp should be a function of p; and the permeable condition of the borehole wall, which may be dependent of the leak-off coefficient cf. (the range of cf is from 0 to 1). Theoretically, for a rock with low permeability, a penetrating borehole wall is still possible. For saturated porous materials with very low values of a, poroelasticity shows that a pore pressure will be built up due to the stress concentration subjected to a nonhydrostatic in situ stress field (Cheng et al., 1993). This phenomenon is known as the Skempton effect. The variation of the pore pressure may be evaluated by [AP = 3 B(A rr + 06ee + A (Y,,)] (1) where B is the Skempton pore pressure coefficient. This pore pressure variation dissipates as time increases (it is totally gone as the drained state is approached). The rate of the dissipation mainly rely on the permeability of the formation. The dissipation is very slow for tight formations because their permeability is very low, and it is fast for rocks of high permeability. According to our analyses, the time period for this process could be from seconds (for sandstone's) to a couple of days (for stales). One possible reason that the H&C model did not agree well with the experimental results for rocks with low permeability might be that the time interval between the application of the loading and the fluid injection had not been long enough for the dissipation of the Skempton effect. The effective-stress law basically defines how much pore pressure contributes to the total stress. The difference between Terzaghi's effective stress and Biot's effective stress is that 100% of the pore pressure contributes to the total stress in Terzaghi's definition, while only a certain portion of the pore pressure ((ap) goes to the total stress in Biot's definition. Therefore, when the pore pressure at the boretole wall (pp) is determined according to Biot's effective-stress law, app in the total tangential stress is attributed to the pore pressure. "The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) has recently developed a series of models utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study airflows and respirable dust distribution associated with a medium-sized surface blasthole drill shroud with a dry dust collector system. CFD models were constructed in ANSYS FLUENT Version 15. Previously run experiments conducted in the NIOSH full-scale drill shroud laboratory were utilized to validate the models. The setup values in CFD models were calculated using experimental data obtained from the drill shroud laboratory and measurements of test material particle size. Subsequent simulation results were compared with the experimental data for test scenarios, including 0.14 m3/s (300 cfm) bailing airflow with 2:1, 3:1, and 4:1 dust collector-to-bailing airflow ratios and 0.24 m3/s (500 cfm) bailing airflow cases with 2:1, 3:1 and 4:1 dust collector-to-bailing airflow ratios. For the 2:1 and 3:1 ratios, results showed the calculated dust concentrations from the CFD models were within the 95% confidence intervals of the lab experimental dust concentrations. This paper describes the methodology used to develop the CFD models, to calculate the model dust input, and to validate the models based on experimental data. Problem regions were identified and revealed by the simulation of a dry dust collector system. The simulation results could be used for future development of dust control methods for a surface mine blasthole drill shroud. INTRODUCTION In surface mines, production drilling is an essential process in blasting which fractures the hard rock overburden for removal. Holes with a predetermined pattern, diameter, and depth are drilled into the overburden to introduce explosives. During the drilling process, considerable amounts of respirable dust are produced. Past research conducting area sampling at blasthole drills has documented time-weighted average respirable dust concentrations ranging from 8.68 to 95.15 mg/m3 [1] and 1.04 to 52.30 mg/m3 [2]. These high dust concentrations, which may contain silica, can lead to respirable dust over-exposures for the drill operator, drill helper, and other personnel in the vicinity. These over-exposures can lead to silicosis, an occupational lung disease that has no cure and is ultimately fatal. In order to prevent the development of silicosis to mine workers, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulates the exposure to respirable dust. For metal/nonmetal (M/NM) mines, MSHA has adopted the threshold limit values recommended in 1973 by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) [3]. The total airborne dust standard is 10 mg/m3. However, if the sample contains greater than 1 percent quartz (the most common form of crystalline silica), a respirable dust standard is calculated with the following equation: Respirable dust standard = (10 mg/m3) / (% respirable quartz + 2)"

If the communication/tracking system of an underground mine is severely damaged in a large mine accident or explosion, a surface based seismic system could be the only available tool for locating any trapped miners. This paper documents a field test of a seismic system at a room-and-pillar coal mine in Eastern Kentucky. Testing was performed at 6 different depths (450, 575, 750, 1175, 1525 and 1700 ft) above the mine. For each location underground, the miners pounded a ?set? of 5 ?repetitions? on the roof with each repetition being about one second apart. Over the 3 day field test, 63 sets of underground miners? pounding were detected by the seismic system at depths up to 1175 ft and at horizontal offsets up to 890 ft. Also during the testing, the observed signal strength generated by pounding with a crib blocks was seen to average 180% stronger than the observed signal strength generated by pounding with a sledgehammer. Ultimately, this field test was very successful and definitively demonstrated the ability of the seismic system to detect potential trapped miners? pounding up to a depth of 1175 ft.

INTRODUCTION Ever since miners were faced with the task of moving ore, some form of scraper has been in use. At first, men and beasts of burden supplied the power to move the scraper, and later, machines were developed for this purpose. In the early 1900s, a few mining properties used small pneumatic single-drum winches to pull loaded scrapers to a raise or ore pocket, and the empty scraper then was dragged back to the muck pile by a miner, as shown in Fig. 1. Just prior to 1920, an improvement was introduced, using two single-drum hoists. As illustrated by Fig. 2, the second hoist was used to return the empty scraper to the muck pile. However, this arrangement still re¬quired two men, one operating each hoist. The next developmental step was to eliminate the second man by locating the hoists side-by-side and using one man to control both hoists. As illustrated by Fig. 3, this involved the use of a tail rope over a sheave to pull the scraper back. The greatest progress in development and the great¬est increase in the use of slusher haulers occurred between 1920 and 1930. In 1921, the Sullivan Machinery Co. designed and built the first two-drum scraper oper¬ating on the principle illustrated by Fig. 4. It was powered by a 4.5-kW (6-hp) Turbinair(r) motor and would pull a 450-kg (1000-1b) load at 0.61 m/s (120 fpm). In 1922, this unit was shipped to the Verona Mining Co. of Caspian, MI, and it experienced immediate success in the Lake Superior iron ore district. Since the two-drum slusher was much less expensive and more efficient than hand mucking, the Lake Superior mines were saved from financial disaster when iron-ore prices fell 25% between 1923 and 1925. Immediately there¬after, a demand developed for slushers that would oper¬ate with electric power, which was considerably cheaper than compressed-air power. In 1923, the Sullivan Machinery Co. responded with the first electric-powered double-drum hoist. During subsequent years, design improvements in¬cluded separate tail-drum gearing to increase the tail¬drum speed, as welt as a number of safety features such as rope guides. One result of these improvements and their utilization by the Michigan iron mines was an in¬crease of 100% in the tons of ore per miner per day in those mines between 1924 and 1929. Since the two-drum slusher was capable only of straight-line mucking, it was not a practical machine for use in open stopes. In 1929, the Sullivan Machinery Co. introduced the first three-drum slusher. As illustrated by Fig. 5, two tail drums and one hauling drum were provided. A tail sheave could be placed at each side of the stope, and the ore then could be loaded and hauled to a central point from the entire width of the stope. During the 1930s, progressively larger slushers were demanded. By 1940, two- and three-drum units were available with motor power as high as 45 kW (60 hp), and slusher power continued to increase after 1940. Be¬tween 1951 and 1952, Joy Manufacturing Co. designed a 112-kW (150-hp) two-drum Blusher for the Climax Molydenum Co. Although there has been no demand for a slusher more powerful than this, 150- to 225-kW (200- to 300-hp) slushers are quite feasible at the pres¬ent time. During the last 30 years, many slusher improvements have been made to the operating life, operational safety, and ease of operation and maintenance. Increased tail-drum speeds have decreased overall scraping times. Rope guards, totally enclosed drums, and operator shields have reduced the hazards of injury due to wire¬rope breakage. Improvements in lubrication have made the slushers relatively maintenance-free, with long operating lives. The introduction of spring-actuated drag brakes prevented uncontrolled unreeling of dis¬engaged drums, allowing the development of practical remote-control slusher operation. Remote control now is available in a choice of all-air, all-electric, or air¬electric slushers. The main objective of this work was to quantitatively investigate exhaust emission levels, as related to maintenance (service) intervals, during the operation of diesel-powered equipment at an underground bauxite mine in Greece. Such emissions depend on a great number of parameters, including the type (technology) and tuning of the engine, the type of work performed as related to the engine workload, suggested maintenance intervals, the altitude, the temperature and the humidity of the atmosphere of the underground mine, the properties of the fuel, the operator's training and experience level. Necessary ventilation quantities were calculated based on exhaust gas concentration measurements, site specific relationships between pollutants and adjusted air quality indices. Diagrams comparing necessary and recommended air flow for several equipment groups featuring two engine types and for different maintenance intervals are presented.

INTRODUCTION Practical experience in mines with known presence of radon daughters in the mine atmosphere in Canada and elsewhere shows that a very high concentration builds up in an unventilated dead end heading. As Holaday et al1 observed, even a minimal air movement results in a drastic reduction in radon daughter concentration. It is therefore obvious that the main objective of radon daughter control in the working environment is to design the ventilation system providing an optimized flow of fresh air into the workplace, resulting in acceptable climatic conditions and achieving radon daughter concentrations resulting in exposures as low as reasonably achievable. BASIC OBJECTIVES Large mining companies, having extensive material resources and professional expertise, have utilized elaborate electrical modelling in the design of mine ventilation systems as early as 1950 (coal mining industry in Europe) and with the advance of computer modelling techniques, their utilization in ventilation systems design is on the increase. Unfortunately, these methods are usually not available to small mining companies and even the large companies might not achieve the fullest benefit from utilizing them, if proper limiting factors are not considered in the modelling. When an evaluation of a ventilation system of a mine is undertaken in literature, a measure of the amount of air supplied underground per one ton of ore mined is used as an indicator of the efficiency of the ventilation system. Yet, even the greatest amount of air forced into the mine might not result in an acceptable working environment if a proper distribution of this air into individual working places is not achieved. The volume and the age of the air are probably the two most important factors in achieving acceptable radon daughter concentrations in the workplace, but other factors also have to be considered. DIRECTOR MINE - ALCAN, NEWFOUNDLAND FLUORSPAR WORKS ST. LAWRENCE, NEWFOUNDLAND, CANADA Ventilation To illustrate the effects of the design of the ventilation system on the control of radon daughter concentration, let us review the gradual development of the ventilation system of this mine from the earlier years of its development up until its final years of operation. This mine, located near the community of St. Lawrence on the south coast of Burin Peninsula was developed in the late thirties and reached full production by 1942. Unfortunately as was customary at that time, the only source of ventilation was a natural draft. The mine was extremely wet, and no significant attention was initially given to possible health effects of dust. It was not until the mid-fifties, when a number of cases of silicosis had surfaced, that de Villiers and Windish2 observed a significant increase of lung cancer incidence among the miners in comparison to its incidence among the general population of Newfoundland. Suspicions regarding radiation as a cause of the lung cancer were expressed, but it was only in surveys taken in late 1959 and early 1960 that Windish3 and Little4 established the presence of radon daughters in the mine atmosphere in very high concentrations. Windish, de Villiers and Hurley suggested that the most likely source of the radon in the mine was the mine water which dissolved radon during its passage through the granitic country rock in the surrounding geological area. This conclusion was confirmed by analyses of water from various areas of the mine by the Atomic Energy Canada Limited laboratories. The radon values in the samples varied from 4,240 to 12,850 pCi/L5. Following the discovery of the presence of radon daughters in the mine, the company took speedy action to install mechanical ventilation for the mine. The system was not designed as a total unit, but fans were installed rather on a trial and error basis. The basic system installation began in March 1960 and was completed by 1962. It remained basically unchanged with only minor modifications until August 1973 when a wholly new, redesigned ventilation system was implemented. A schematic section of the mine and its ventilation system for the period prior to March 1960 is given in Figure "A", for the period 1960-1973 in Figure "B", and for the period after August 1973 in Figure "C". The ventilation system prior to 1960 is not known. All workings of the mine were ventilated only by natural ventilation. If any measurements of airflows at different or any times of the year ever existed, no records have been preserved. The very minimal natural ventilation was augmented by "blowing" air from compressed air supply lines and exhaust air from drills. It is known that the compressor capacities of the mine were limited and therefore no significant air movement was probably created by the "blowing".

During the major expansion of the Inspiration smelter, which took place in 1973, the bulk material handling system underwent a matching expansion in order to move the required materials. Inspiration is the first smelter worldwide to employ electric smelting in conjunction with the use of Hoboken converters (1), (2). The installation includes a 51 -MVA electric furnace, five 4.25m (14-foot) diameter Hoboken converters, rotary dryer, bedding plant, acid plant, heat recovery steam plant, and gas and dust handling system. See Figure 1, Plot Plan. As of today, the 51-MVA electric furnace is the world's largest in the smelting of copper. Engineering design for the installation was per- formed by Treadwell Corporation of New York. The task of designing the conveyor system was complex because the system had to be installed while the smelter was operating and with minimum plant shutdowns, and it had to serve both the existing and the new smelter. Existing conveyors were redesigned where necessary and incorporated into the new conveyor system. See Figure 2, Flow Sheet. The system encompasses the handling of such diverse materials as wet and dry copper concentrates, cement copper, silica flux, cold dope, and concentrate and flue dust.

INTRODUCTION High energy breaking is an alternative to using ex¬plosives in underground secondary breaking operations. It also is a means of upgrading conventional hand-held breakers, manual sledge-hammer breaking, and scaling bar operations. Major areas of application are in sec¬ondary breaking over grizzlies and at drawpoints. Other applications include breaking down ripping lips in longwall seam mining, scaling in stopes and rooms, general demolition work, and roadway maintenance. There is considerable interest in high-energy impact breakers for use in primary ore breaking, but, as of 1977, all such applications have been only experimental (duToit, 1973; Joughin, 1976; Wayment and Grantmyre, 1976). EQUIPMENT Essentially, a high-energy impact hammer is a boom¬mounted pneumatically or hydraulically actuated breaker. The machine basically consists of a piston that oscillates in a housing and impacts the end of a tool or moil thrust against the rock. The force applied to the rock primarily depends upon the impact energy of the piston-the higher the impact or blow energy, the greater the force and, thus, the greater the rock break¬age. Among drill and breaker designers, a common expression for blow energy is "force of blow." Hand-held breakers are limited to blow energies of about 140 J (100 ft-lb), because the operator is unable to handle heavier machines efficiently or to absorb the recoil energy resulting from higher blow energies. How¬ever, these restrictions do not apply to boom mounted breakers; machines with blow energies on the order of 4000 J (3000 ft-lb) and higher are available commer¬cially for underground use. There is considerable evi¬dence to show that increasing the blow energy also in¬creases the efficiency of the breaking operation; i.e., more rock is broken per unit of energy expended (Grantmyre and Hawkes, 1975). Thus, there is a trend to higher blow-energy machines, particularly where high¬strength rocks are to be broken. In relation to rock breaking, the blow rate of boom¬mounted impact breakers is not as important as it is for rock drills. This is because the breaker must be moved over the work surface between blows. The blow rate is governed eventually by the power supply, and typical blow rates range between 200 and 600 blows per minute. As a general rule, light blow-energy machines have higher blow rates than heavier machines. Table 1 lists most of the boom-mounted impact breakers that were available commercially during 1977, and it gives details of the blow energies and machine weights. Restrictions are placed on the blow energy by the machine weight and size, and by the strength of the boom. Typically, boom-mounted impact hammers have a blow-energy to mass ratio of about 1.5, with lower values for lighter machines and higher values for heavier machines. In addition to supporting the hammer weight, the boom also has to absorb the recoil energy of the blow, which can be on the order of 1400 J (1000 ft-lb) for large hammers operating in a horizontal mode. Interesting exceptions to the general run of impactors are the Joy HEFTI hydraulic hammers. In these machines, the piston impacts onto a fluid cushion that is positioned between the piston and the impact tool. This approach allows very high piston velocities, over 30 m/s (100 fps), to be used without the risk of break¬ing the piston or impact tool. Steel on steel impacts must be limited to impact velocities of about 10 m/s (35 fps) due to the high impact stresses generated; thus, increased blow energies can be achieved only by increas¬ing the piston size. The Joy 514 HEFTI®, listed in Table 1, has a blow energy of 27 100 J (20,000 ft-lb), but, as of 1977, the machine has been used underground only on an experimental basis. Using a fluid cushion between the piston and the impact tool allows the use of light pistons, reducing the overall machine weight. The recoil energy, which must be absorbed by the boom for a given blow energy, is directly proportional to the piston to machine mass ratio, and operating with light pistons provides an addi¬tional benefit in reducing the requisite boom size. To many who for years have scrutinized the US mineral supply picture, recent, often strident debate on present-day security of many critical mineral supplies echoes sentiments repeatedly expressed in the past decade by the minerals industry. At no time since the last world war has such a flurry of public concern been expressed for the economy's mineral sector. Where once mineral availability problems were relegated to the newspaper's business section or not reported at all, today comprehensive analyses of our international mineral posture are discussed in detail by some of the nation's most respected and widely read periodicals. In past years, disinterest was also experienced whenever the mining industry attempted to carry its message to Congress, the public, and the government's executive branch. Among minerals professionals, the past decade was a time of particular frustration clue to serious erosion ill US ability to competitively produce the vast array of raw materials vital to the economy acid national defense. Fervent calls for immediate attention were simply not answered. These professionals have understood that mining and agriculture are the primary sources of wealth, fulfilling virtually all needs and creating and sustaining jobs. Why then has it been so difficult to raise the consciousness of the American public, and even more surprisingly, of the government and national leadership? The answer to this question is perhaps endemic to how government functions, but pore important, it begs that mining professionals capitalize on the opportunity and the attention now at hand. Carefully conceived and implemented actions by both private and public sectors are needed more than ever before in the past 35 years. To this end, it is vitally important to seek out and resolve the root causes of supply problems and not dwell on superficial solutions. The following discussion attempts to establish a simple framework to view this process. It does not presume to be an exposition of cause and effect, but hopefully identifies some needed steps. Growing Awareness in the 1970s Of all events stimulating current concern, certainly the OPEC oil embargo has left the deepest impression. It was inevitable that after such a shock, man. Americans would begin asking whether the US was as vulnerable to cutoffs of minerals as it was to oil cutoffs. Then, when serious trade security questions surfaced in sonic mineral-rich nations in Africa and the Persian Gulf, the ominous term ''resource war" began to be heard. Countries such as South Africa, Zaire, Zambia, and Zimbabwe have suddenly become key areas for testing our national security resolve. As the US witnesses the influx of Marxist influence in many sub-Saharan exporting nations and the rising threat to free world access to critical materials and energy, the assurance of adequate supplies is becoming a national issue at last. The US is now learning that self-sufficiency for many vitally important mineral commodities has vanished. Of course, it did not vanish overnight; it had been leaking away for years, and the trend was noted by industry and a few in government. Within the minerals community, suspected weaknesses in America's resource posture were sought and found. As a result, the country's heavy reliance on foreign sources fur more than a score of minerals, many extremely vital to security, has been forcefully documented and the case for drastically altering the supply unbalance hits been proposed. The renewed concern for national defense is central to almost all proposals for minimizing US foreign mineral dependence. It is not surprising that many of the voices heard today on the dependency issue are active members or alumni of the militate establishment. Unfortunately, their almost total focus on the security aspects of dependency has tended to obscure important underlying issues which are not directly defense-related. Some of the proposals advanced might mitigate the deeps-dency problems, but they still fall short of curing the underlying problems that have led to a steady loss in mineral self-sufficiency. In almost all instances these problems call be traced to increasing government influence on the free market minerals economy. Some national security proponents seek to attain total self-sufficiency in minerals. Such arguments must he tempered by existing realities. It is easy to demonstrate that the US obtains substantial quantities of sonic essential minerals from potentially insecure sources abroad. That the US will continue to do so in the foreseeable future is not in doubt Uncertainty begins, however, when we try to interpret the significance of these facts. It is important to understand that mineral dependency does not irrevocably lead to vulnerability. Unlike oil, no mineral commodity combines the same degree of universal indispensibility and centralized foreign control of supplies. Moreover, although many US-required minerals are produced by fewer countries than export oil, those minerals cannot approach petroleum in economic or industrial importance. Finally, most foreign supplies come front friendly, secure nations such as Canada, 'Mexico, and Brazil. This, aid more, constitutes a vital element in US economic health as a world trading nation. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated germanium and gallium extraction from an ore containing 0.089% Ge and 0.036% Ga. While previous researchers concluded that a reducing agent such as 502 is needed to extract germanium and gallium from such ore, this research showed that high extractions (87% Ge, 97% Ga) were possible using sulfuric acid alone, if the acid concentration were properly controlled. This control was achieved using a two-stage counter-current leach circuit. Microprobe analyses revealed that the non-extracted germanium is in solid solution with quartz, and therefore cannot be leached with 502 or sulfuric acid.

At the same time the number of mines producing this increased tonnage has decreased over 60% in a 30-year period, from 9230 mines in 1960.1 The great increase in production made possible through continued mechanization requires greatly improved loading facilities just to get coal away from the mine. Also the trend to combine production from more than one mine and cleaning it in a single preparation plant continues. A recent census of US coal preparation plants indicated that 310 plants were in operation.2 In addition to increased loading capacity, storage and blending facilities are more necessary both at the producer and user end. In this climate of rapidly changing technology, any written account is faced with the possibility of obsolescence before its appearance. Thus, this chapter seeks to define the common and current practice in coal loading and storage facilities with the full knowledge that this practice is an ever-moving target. FUNDAMENTALS OF COAL STORAGE Storage of coal is becoming an increasingly important part of coal handling systems at mines, particularly since the advent of the unit-train concept in transportation. In order to take advantage of reduced transportation rates on trainload shipments of coal offered by unit-train movement, operators have found that storage is an economic necessity. In unit-train practice, large predetermined quantities must be loaded in relatively short periods of time, as opposed to conventional practice where coal is loaded at a speed dependent on the production capacity of the mine and/or the cleaning capacity of the preparation plant. Clean coal storage is generally practiced in order to accomplish one, or a combination, of the following objectives: 1. To load out promptly and economically. 2. To facilitate blending in order to even out chemical and physical inconsistencies and to prepare desired products or to attain maximum product uniformity. 3. To store certain sizes whose prices and market demand fluctuate with seasons and to permit shipping in good weather. Coal storage, then, is necessary and desirable, both from production and utilization standpoints. There are, however, several undesirable aspects attendant to the storage of coal, the most important of which are oxidation and spontaneous combustion, changes in properties which may affect utilization of the coal, degradation of coal due to rehandling, and the added cost of handling and storage facilities.

The FMC Westvaco Trona Mine is located near Green River, Wyoming and has an annual production of 4.5M tons. Trona is an evaporite mineral that is processed into several products, mostly soda ash. The underground mine has two active development panels and one longwall (LW) panel. The mining horizon is about 500m below surface and the surrounding strata liberates methane. Three surface-based, blowing fans provide ventilation air as a positive pressure system. The mine operates a 225m long LW face, built by Joy Mining Machinery. Headgate and Tailgate developments are driven with four entries. The recovery room, at the end of each panel, is 8m wide with three access chutes. Additional recovery room support comes for concrete blocks used with a center to center spacing of 1.5m. As the LW enters this pre-driven recovery room there are notable responses and shifting ground stresses. This study was undertaken to measure the ground response using seven vibrating wire displacement transducers. These devices were used to monitor the convergence as the LW approached the recovery room. The methane concentration in the air ventilating the recovery room was also monitored. The correlation between convergence and gas liberation was then studied. The results show that the convergence varies from 0.1m to 0.25m along the length of the recovery room. Ventilating the recovery room becomes critical as methane is liberated from oil shale as the more plastic floor material is disrupted. Appropriate methods are employed to ventilate the recovery room.

Mineral liberations that would be obtained by grinding an ore to a specific size can be predicted by analyzing unbroken ore pieces, and mineral liberations in ground ores and mill products can be determined directly by image analysis. Predictions of mineral liberations are made by measuring size distributions and textures of mineral grains by image analysis, and using liberation models. Ground ores and mill products are analyzed to determine the proportion of mineral that is liberated, and the data are used to evaluate mineral behaviour during mineral beneficiation. The liberation data for minerals in a suite of mill products from a circuit are processed by a materials balancing technique to calculate recoveries of minerals in different types of particles throughout the circuit. The liberation-materials balance data define mineral recoveries; define the behaviour of an ore in a concentrator, pilot plant or bench test; and indicate whether recovery improvements are possible and/or feasible.

The Greenwich Collieries Co. is a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Mines Corporation, and a wholly owned subsidiary of the PP&L Co. which serves the northeastern portion of Pa. PP&L annually consumes about 11 million tons of coal per year and is the largest consumer of both bituminous and anthracite coal on the eastern seaboard. Development work for Greenwich started in 1969. The coarse coal plant was constructed in 1970, with the raw fines bypassed. This worked very well for our requirements at that time; however, the Greenwich mining plans were extensively changed, longwall mining units were installed and low coal was encountered, resulting in dirtier coal, a finer coal and an ever increasing ash in the shipped product. All this demanded a more efficient ash removal process for the fine coal fraction. In 1971, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency were pushing for the now stringent sulphur emission limits at our power plants. The Greenwich Mine coal reserves contained large quantities of 3.5 to 4% sulphur along with some low sulphur reserves. It was, therefore, essential that any new plant have the capability of efficient sulphur removal to meet the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency required limits. To meet these limits our design would have to be capable of producing a product of 2.0% sulphur or less.

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is one of the most ubiquitous and versatile minerals found in the earth's crust. Its availability, attractive physical properties and relatively low processing cost make CaCO3 the most widely used filler material today. It is mined in three different forms - chalk, limestone and marble. Each physical form of CaCO3 has different qualities due to differences in postdepositional geology. But the chemical composition remains the same, with CaCO3 an inert component of the finished product. In the past, the paper industry largely left CaCO3 by the wayside, as it cannot withstand the acid-based papermaking process. But conversion to an alkaline system by many US mills changed this picture. Carbonate suppliers have put time and effort into research and development, demolishing barriers and creating new possibilities for what is a simple, natural product. By controlling particle size, size distribution and particle charge, the industry uses ground calcium carbonate (GCC) as a performance enhancer and as an extender for more expensive ingredients. It is estimated that the United States uses 3.6 to 4.1 Mt/a (4 to 4.5 million stpy) of CaCO3. Consolidations and mergers are taking place in the industry. Of the 12 major GCC producers in operation nine years ago, seven are left. Mineral Technology (US) is the dominant precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) producer with more than 50 satellite plants worldwide. Other producers include Georgia Marble (French); Franklin Industries (US); OMYA (Swiss); J.M. Huber (US); ECC (English); and Filler Products (US). Global Stone PenRoc (Canada) is the only newcomer. In addition to this group, there are three small producers left in North America, each with a capacity of less than 100 kt/ a (.110,000 stpy). The trade organization operating as the Pulverized Limestone Division of the National Stone Association renamed itself the Pulverized Mineral Division, to increase its membership pool. The US paper industry is a predominant GCC con¬sumer, using approximately 800 kt/a (882,000 stpy) at an approximate cost of $130/t ($1.43/st). European paper mills pioneered alkaline papermaking. In the early 1960s, they began using GCC as filler and soon thereafter added GCC to their coating formulations. A decade later, the North American paper industry followed suit. The conversion from acid to alkaline paper production benefits the economic and performance aspects of the industry. Less pulp is needed, paper machine maintenance and effluent treatment costs are reduced, and sheet strength, opacity and brightness are increased. Perhaps most important to the reader, the sheet is desensitized to ultraviolet light, extending the paper's archival ability. CaCO3 can provide the papermaker with additional control of his paper. For example, PCC has long supplied the tobacco industry with a means to slow down the burning rate of cigarettes. Due to enhanced performance with regard to bulk and opacity, filler PCC use has risen to 1,500 kt/a (1,650 stpy) in the United States, at an approximate price of $130/t ($143/st). The majority is produced onsite at the paper mill, using "satellite plants." This concept reduces freight cost because only quicklime (CaO) is shipped to the mill, not CaCO3 slurry. The future of CaCO3 is encouraging. The amount of natural ground CaCO3 used is expected to double by the year 2005 to approximately 8 Mt (8.8 million st) worldwide. Acid papermaking practices will feel an increasing pressure to convert to an alkaline process as larger volumes of GCC containing paper enter the recycling market. CaCO3 reserves are plentiful. They will supply the ever growing demand for increasingly sophisticated paper. The plastics industry is supplied with almost 900 kt/ a (990,000 stpy) GCC at an annual growth rate of 4% to 5%. The price of a functional, inorganic filler, surface modified for the plastics industry, has an average selling price of $220/t ($243/st). GCC represents the most common filler, creating a product with higher gloss, better dielectric properties, impact resistance, weatherability and shrinkage control. CaCO3-filled plastics surround us - auto hubcaps and dashboards, shower enclosures, floor tiles, wire coatings, microwave dishes and Tupperware. The caulking and sealant industry is an enormous GCC user, with annual consumption requiring 1.13 Mt (1.2 million st) at about $44/t ($48.50/ st). Caulking and sealant may be highly filled with GCC yet undergo no adverse flow effects, with a narrow particle-size-distribution filler decreasing the binder demand. The CaCO3 industry, as well as the carpet industry, are more or less tied to the growth rates of the construction industry. It is estimated that the carpet industry uses some 680 kt/a (750,000 stpy) of GCC at about $25/t ($27.50/st). The paint industry uses approximately 300 kt/a (331,000 stpy) at a 1 % to 1.5% annual growth rate. Here, too, GCC is the dominant filler. It is used to enhance flow characteristics and color uniformity. It also extends costly titanium dioxide, creates sheen and controls roughness, hardness and tack. More CaCO3 should be used in the future as industry shifts from solvent-free or water-based formulations that can accommodate higher GCC volumes. CaCO3 is not imported or exported in any great quantity. Most areas have reserves of their own and the selling price is relatively low. Even so, quality varies from deposit to deposit. As our needs become morespecific, it remains a challenge to provide varying industries with a fitting product.

Recent research has shown that enhanced gravity separators provide the opportunity to effectively clean I mm x 37 micron coal. At Southern Illinois University, a detailed experimental program was performed on a continuous Falcon Concentrator, which was found to achieve separations at mass throughput capacity values in excess of 100 tonnes/hour. The apparent particle separation density for I mm x 73 micron coal was about 1.60 with relatively high efficiency (Ep = 0.12). Typical ash and sulfur rejection values of 85% and 70%, respectively, were achieved while recovering 85% of the combustible material. Metallurgical and efficiency data from the evaluation are presented in this publication.

With the increasing demand for minerals and the decline in the quality of ore reserves, technologies to maximize recovery are critical to a mine?s economic success. Many mining waters exhibit the potential to form hardness-based inorganic scales, which inhibit effective mineral recovery. Often, a continuously-fed chemical deposit control program is implemented by the mine site to inhibit these scales. The use of retractable scale coupons is the current industry standard for monitoring these programs; however, a key drawback to their use is the limited, and sometimes untimely amount of information they provide. A proprietary fouling analyzer has been developed that can be used to continuously monitor the formation of inorganic scales in mining process streams. Consequently, it can be used to continually, and more effectively, communicate the efficacy of an antiscalant program, thereby providing the ability to compare different scale control programs and to optimize their feedrates. Case studies presented validate the applicability of this technology to help optimize mineral recovery.

Production scheduling is an integral part of intermediate- and long-range open-pit mine planning, affecting equipment selection, manpower requirements and project economics. The development of mining phases, or pushbacks, is discussed in conjunction with generating the best spatial extraction sequence. An approach to scheduling production from these mining phases is then described. Using computers and a production scheduling algorithm, the impact of cutoff grade and advanced stripping policies can be evaluated through sensitivity studies to maximize the return on project investments.

The Golden Sunlight Mine started full-scale operations in February 1983, with a conventional open-pit mine supplying 4464 tonnes (5000 tons) per day of milling ore. After crushing and grinding, the ore is leached with cyanide solution in large agitation tanks. Soluble gold values are removed from the sand portion of the leached ore with five stages of countercurrent washing cyclones. After thickening of the cyclone-wash overflow slurry, the gold is recovered in activated carbon with a six-stage carbon-in-pulp circuit and a five-stage upflow carbon column circuit. Pressure stripping, carbon reactivation, electro-winning and refining complete the gold recovery process.
