Little did I know, in 1977, that when the A. P. Green Refractories Raw Material Manager showed me 5-6 burlap bags with samples of calcined high alumina bauxite in their testing lab that this was the start of China moving to be the number one user and producer of calcined refractory bauxite. According to Ted Dickson in his August 2008 Industrial Minerals article China produced about 4 million tons of calcined bauxite in 2007 using 2 million tons themselves. They imposed an export limitation of 970,000 tons in 2007 and 940,000 tons in 2008. A 10% growth will take up the difference between exports and production in 4 years. Two of these years are gone. It will take only 4 more years to eliminate the export quota in home use. Then they will be importing unless they increase production. Guyana was exporting over a half million tons in 1975 and sold less than 70,000 tons in 2002. Basai Metals Group bought Guyana?s deposits and is rose to 250,000 tons in 2007 and expects to produce 280,000 tons in 2008. PRICES According to the USGS Prices dropped from $172/per ton for Guyana calcines in 1980 just after the start of Chinese production to $122 in 1985. Guyana prices averaged around $120/ton from 1985 to 2005. China?s price dropped as low as $45/ton in 1995 undercutting Guyana and making it virtually impossible for anyone to get into the market. The price suddenly escalated to $550/ton FOB China in the summer of 2008 when China actually cut its exports in half. The price dropped in the fall as orders dropped. This is a four to five fold price increase. Is this a shortage of bauxite or a monopoly? Australia dropped out of the market in 2008 and Surinam, controlled by Alcoa, is not participating right now. Will these two come back in to make up the difference? Will the price hold up so they can make a profit? [ ] The low prices have undoubtedly affected the prices of the 60 and 79% alumina bauxite which can hold down the quantity of 80% plus calcined refractory needed in the world market. China is starting to upgrade lower quality bauxite up to 90% alumina. With high prices kaolin alteration to high alumina comes into play. The calcined bauxite is also used for proponents, Brown fused alumina, and abrasive grades which compete with Refractories. These and the tightness of supplies needed for metallurgical will hold prices up. TONNAGE China is the number one supplier and consumer of high alumina calcined bauxite in the world. Basai Metals Group Guyana (BMGG) is owned and controlled by Basai Minerals Group of China. This appears to be the second largest supplier. Australia has dropped production and Brazil is just starting to expand. It appears China is going to replace some of exports caused by the Export License 940,000 ton maximum in 2008 by raising Guyana?s (BMGG) production of calcined refractory grade bauxite. Companies exceeded restriction in 2007. Fines have been imposed for 2008. In August 2008 they appear on line to meet the 2008 quota. After August prices have dropped off as orders dropped due to the recession. Guyana was the largest producer in 1975 with 769,000 tons which decreased to less than 79,000 tons in 2002. The U. S. is a small part of the world production. I have used the United States charts to represent world imports because I have little data on what other countries import and pay FOB for their bauxite. China started exporting calcined 80% plus refractory bauxite to the United States in 1979 with 24,000 tons. By 1985 they were the number one importer with 169,000 tons. Guyana who had been number one in shipments to the United States gradually decreased to 36,000 tons in 2006. Guyana has been purchased by China BMGG and will increase there production to over 200,000 tons in 2009. Australia shut down production in 2008 and Surinam has elected to not send any Calcined bauxite to the United States. It has long been understood that extended occupational exposures to respirable mine dusts can lead to chronic lung disease. In underground coal mines, coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) and silicosis are major concerns. While many efforts have been made with the aim of understanding the mass-based concentrations and silica contents of respirable dusts under a variety of mining conditions, little research has been completed in characterizing dust at the individual particle level (by composition, size and shape). This study employed scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray (SEM-EDX) to analyze dust samples collected from an underground coal mine in Central Appalachia. The results indicated that particle characteristics can vary widely between locations, though many trends might be explained based on knowledge of mining conditions. A continuous personal dust monitor (CPDM) was also used during the collection of some samples to determine respirable dust concentrations, which were compared against estimated concentrations based on the particle-level analysis.

The Global Mining Standards and Guidelines Group (GMSG) is building an international, multi-stakeholder community to advance the availability and use of standards and industry guidelines for the global mining community. Standards and guidelines are key strategic tools for operational excellence, enabling companies to move forward with efficient, innovative operations with reduced risk. Launched in May 2012, the GMSG is the first international center to bring together information, resources and collaborative projects for mining standards and guidelines, in an open, knowledge-sharing forum. The GMSG is supported by five partner organizations providing outreach and helping to guide GMSG activities: the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME), the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) and the Surface Mining Association for Research and Technology (SMART). GMSG was formed under the CIM Surface Mining Society, though its mandate extends to include underground mining as well. ?SME is supporting the GMSG as a key international activity to advance the implementation of standards and guidelines in our industry, and to provide a forum for our members to access, and contribute to, projects and information to assist their operations,? said SME Executive Director David Kanagy. ?We see the GMSG as a good example of ways the major mining associations can work together for the benefit of all our members.? The GMSG charter encompasses all standards and guidelines that apply to mining; however, a number of subject areas are now being spearheaded by six working groups, namely: ? Access and usage of data from mobile mining equipment onboard systems. ? Operational safety. ? Situational awareness (namely, a unified equipment operator interface). ? Underground operations. ? Asset management and operations data definitions and KPIs. ? Energy in communition.

Panel caving is an underground bulk mining method that utilizes gravitational force for mining massive, steeply dipping, and deep-seated ore deposits at a lower operating cost. To control dust and gas emissions entering the production level during the extraction of ore from the draw points in a panel cave, relatively negative pressure is created in the cave by installing an exhaust fan in the exhaust drift located on top of the cave. Since caving is a dynamic process, the design of an effective ventilation system is a challenging task, and therefore, estimation of airflow resistance offered by the broken rock inside the cave is critical. The complex and dynamic nature of caving also makes it difficult to predict the airflow resistance by using traditional approaches. This study investigates the effect of changes in the bulk porosity of the broken rock on the cave airflow resistance using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. The results show an inverse relationship between the cave airflow resistance and the bulk cave porosity. The pressure-quantity characteristic curves presented in this paper provide valuable information for sizing and operating an exhaust fan used for a mature panel cave ventilation.

The Regional Connector Transit Project is a 1.9-mile-long underground light rail system that will connect LA Metro’s A (Blue), E (Expo), and L (Gold) Lines in downtown Los Angeles. This $1.75-billion design-build project is scheduled for revenue service in Spring 2023. The project consists of 21-foot diameter twin-bored tunnels, a 300-footlong crossover SEM cavern, three new underground stations (at 1st Street/Central Avenue, 2nd Street/ Broadway Avenue, and 2nd/Hope Streets), and cut-and-cover tunnels along South Flower, Alameda, and 1st Streets. This paper, which is the continuation of our previous paper presented in RETC 2019—LA Metro Regional Connector Transit Project: Successful Halfway-Through Completion, will provide insight regarding the construction of major components, and the system integration and testing work undertaken for this complex transit project.

The 5180 m EPBM drive on the Lower Olentangy Tunnel (LOT) is predominantly within glacial overburden. To connect LOT with the existing OARS deep tunnel in limestone bedrock, the upper 15 m inside diameter Vine Street retrieval shaft telescopes down to 6.7 m in diameter and extends into the karstic Columbus Limestone to a depth of 51 m, where a 104 m SEM tunnel will connect to OARS shaft 6. Pre-excavation grouting was reuired prior to lower shaft excavation to reduce potentially high groundwater inows. This paper discusses the secant pile installation, grouting program, shaft excavation, and hydrogeologic observations.

Underground mine roof bolting is a crucial operation for miners’ safety and mine sustainability. Since roof bolting is a manual or human-supervised operation, miners’ safety is at risk due to dust or rock falls. Traditional machine learning algorithms have shown limitations to detecting drillable areas, mainly due to harsh lighting conditions. The authors propose an adaptive deep-learning framework for autonomous roof bolting. The proposed framework is based on implementing a binary semantic segmentation algorithm on color images to classify pixels that belong to rock from those that belong to non-rock. Significantly, the proposed framework implements deep learning semantic segmentation on images from traditional and neuromorphic vision sensors in underground mines. The performance of the proposed model shows an impressive accuracy level of at least 98% at a low number of training epochs with smooth learning curves. The high accuracy enables the implementation of autonomous roof bolting, greatly improving miners’ safety and operational efficiency while reducing human exposure to safety hazards. This research will advance the use of deep learning in mining automation and has the potential to revolutionize the traditional mining industry.

"It is not surprising that the most popular key takeaway from the Developing Diversity in Mining workshop (see box) held on the first day of the SME Arizona Conference in December was, “Have more parties!”The adage that mining professionals work hard and play hard was clearly demonstrated at the two-day conference in the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa in Tucson, AZ. Nearly 550 participants, some of whom had left behind frigid temperatures and thick parkas in their hometowns, attended a full slate of technical sessions, shared industry experiences and knowledge, reconnected with buddies in the industry, and made strategic new contacts in the conference’s collegial environment, aided by the mild Arizona winter.To start off the technical sessions, John Mansanti, president and chief executive officer of Crystal Peak Minerals and 2017 SME president, entertained a packed lecture room with his keynote lecture on “Tariffs, Embargos, and Cartels ... Oh My! A Perspective on Potash.” Mansanti gave the audience the benefit of his more than 35 years of experience at companies including Barrick Gold, Newmont Mining Corp., Placer Dome, Freeport-McMoRan and Intrepid Potash, where he was senior vice president for operations, technology and strategy. At the luncheon, Justin Cross, general manager of Freeport-Mc- MoRan’s Bagdad operations, spoke on how the role of a leader in mining is transforming from one based on technical expertise to one based on the ability to collaborate, to lead and to adapt to changes in technologies and skill sets, in his talk on “Knowing When to Learn, When to Lead and When to Manage.”"

A case study was conducted on a metal mine operating in Kazakhstan, in which problems were associated with use of a complicated and outdated ventilation system and its high expenses. The mine needs to reconsider its existing ventilation system and identify the risks associated with operational losses when using this ventilation system. The aim of this study was to develop an efficient risk analysis method capable of estimating operational risks and financial benefits of the existing mine ventilation system. The developed risk analysismethod considers ventilationmodelling, riskmodelling, and financialmodelling.Ventilation modelling comprises ventilation simulation and ventilation financial simulation. In risk modelling, the number of risk events occurring with the use of existing ventilation system and the operational losses during these events is estimated. Financial modelling considers operational losses and ventilation financial simulation benefits and uses a dynamic cash flow model to estimate how cost variability influences the cash flow. As a result, the improved ventilation system attains an additional NPVa ranging from 3.2 to 8.5 million US$ at the corresponding defined probability of 90%. The results of this study reveal that the developed risk analysis method can efficiently estimate the financial benefits of ventilation modelling and consider risk events and their total operational losses associated with use of the existing ventilation system. This approach provides a range of possible outcomes and helps with deciding whether the ventilation system is appropriate or whether it should be updated to better suit the project financial benefits.

The Grasberg porphyry copper-gold deposit of Freeport Indonesia Inc., an 81% owned subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan Inc., lies within the Ertsberg Mineral District in central Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Grasberg deposit was discovered during a drilling campaign initiated in early 1988. Production at the open pit Grasberg deposit commenced in December 1989. The Grasberg copper-gold orebody is contained with a young igneous complex of dioritic composition which intrudes limestones of the Tertiary New Guinea Group. Alteration is typical of porphyry copper deposits worldwide except that higher grade primary chalcopyrite with significant gold values is associated with a centrally located zone of strong quartz stockwork.

Production forecasts derived from the medium-term schedule represent the best path forward for underground mining operations to achieve corporate and operational goals. Unforeseen circumstances, such as equipment breakdown, can cause significant deviations from established production forecasts in the short term. Such situations require timely mitigation of the effects of the deviations in order to stay as close as possible to the medium-term plan. This paper presents a deterministic mathematical formulation for short-term scheduling that addresses this challenge. The formulation is able to make up for deficits resulting from operational disruptions by minimizing deviations from medium-term production goals and medium-term activity start dates. We demonstrate this in a case study by simulating disruptions involving reduction in ore extraction capacity and development advance rate. Aside from the rescheduling capability, this formulation can help mine planners conduct analysis on the impact of various disruptions on the schedule. The formulation can help identify those conditions or disruptions that are more detrimental to the achievement of forecast targets, or otherwise. The formulation also affords mine planners the flexibility to prioritize one production goal over the other, depending on operational conditions at the mine. In the future, we seek to incorporate in the formulation respirable dust, diesel particulate matter and ventilation constraints in order to create more realistic schedules, and enhance miners’ health and safety.

Freeze and thaw deterioration is a serious problem In con¬crete pavements. The main cause of distress Is thought to be the pore structure of coarse aggregate. In an attempt to characterize deleterious pores, the Iowa Pore Index test and the Expected Durability Factor, as Calculated from the mer¬cury intrusion porosimeter, were devised. This study Included freeze-thaw and sodium and magnesium sulfate soundness testing of sixteen carbonate aggregate samples. In addition, the Iowa Pore Index and the Expected Durability factor were determined for each of the samples. All of the Above mentioned physicochemical parameters were examined using bivriate correlation analysis with the In¬tent to evaluate the effectiveness of the Iowa Pore Index and Expected Durability factor for predicting the frost dur¬ability of an aggregate. The results from the bivariate correlation analysis showed no significant correlation, between the Iowa Pore In¬dex And- Expected Durability factor with the other physico¬chemical parameters investigated. Rust interesting is that the Iowa Pore index predicted that All of the tested samples would resist freeze-thaw failure, whereas the Expected Durability factor predicted that -ash sample would he non-durable.

This study aims to investigate the effect of combined mechanical and ultrasonic milling on the size reduction of talc. Firstly, the talc sample was wet ground in a stirred media mill for five different times (30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 min), and the optimum result was subsequently achieved with treatment by ultrasonication. The effects of amplitude (20, 35, and 50 μm), solid content (2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10%), and sonication time (60, 120, and 240 min) on the sizes of the final product were investigated. The pre-milling by wet grinding caused a decrease in the grinding resistance of talc. Sequential ultrasonic treatment, which was applied to the talc sample, generated smaller particles in comparison to those acquired by stirred media milling alone. Experimental results were assessed based on the product particle size (d10, d50), reduction ratio, and specific energy consumption. Submicron particles prepared by ultrasonic treatment were perfectly stable compared to stirred media milling alone as investigated in terms of particle size. In addition, the effects of mechanical and ultrasonic milling on structural properties of talc particles were characterized by XRD analysis.

The MSHA prescribed method for the determination of quartz in airborne respirable dust samples from underground coal mines is the P-7 method, a combination of low temperature radio-frequency ashing (LTA) and infrared analysis (lR). There is no prescribed procedure for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rock. Dispersive Infrared (IR), Fourier-transform Infrared (FTIR), and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) methods are most commonly used for quartz analysis in powders. Several aspects of the experimental procedures such as the analysis sample preparation from bulk samples, ashing techniques, scanning procedures, peak measurement location, calibration techniques, sample amounts, size consist, and data interpretation affect differently the results from each of the methods. Significant differences in analysis results from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (IR) on the same samples are reported. All these studies point to the need for reliable quartz analysis methods. In a recent research, a procedure for preparing bulk coal and host rock samples for quantitative quartz analysis was developed. Further the results from X-ray diffractometry and infrared spectroscopy for quartz content on identical samples were compared. Calibrations with pure and mixed standards were used to assess the influence of particle size distribution, matrix, and calibration on analysis results. In this paper, several issues with the measurement of quartz in the samples of coal, host rock, and airborne respirable dust from mines are outlined and quantified.

TBM (TBM) mining in urban areas particularly under low overburden is a big challenge to design and excavate. During excavation of the Lucknow Metro project, in Uttar Pradesh, India the metro authorities encountered a design stretch where the TBM had to cross a sewer canal crossing of 15 m length under overburden of less than 1 m. Not only the stability of TBM due to uplift was of concern but also the stability of both banks. Most structures on the canal banks were non-engineered structures whose stability due to vibration of TBM was also of concern. Due to these risks, a method was proposed that met stability requirements for both ground and superstructures. The design was practical and cost effective to construct, and a collaborative exercise between the client, contractor and designer that took approximately 18 months to implement.

INTRODUCTION The U. S. mining industry experienced a severe recession in the early 1980's. This resulted in the realization that the domestic mining industry had to compete on a global basis and only the strong or the low-cost producers would survive. The economic viability of a mining company not only depended on maximizing mineral recovery but also on its ability to do so at minimum cost. Companies had to become more productive not only by cutting costs, but also by developing and/or evaluating new technologies in existing or new plants. Several innovative concepts, including in-pit crushing and conveying, fine crushing, improved classification equipment, flotation, column flotation, pressure filtration, etc., have been developed in recent years. This paper addresses the impact of new flotation concepts and equipment on mill design. MILL DESIGN PHILOSOPHY Modern mill design, especially for large capacity plants, has its foundation in minimizing capital and operating costs. Capital costs can be minimized by minimizing the various components of the capital cost: infrastructure, equipment, instrumentation, structural, initial spare parts costs, etc. All these costs are minimized by simplifying the mill design and/or process flowsheet. The simplified process flowsheet, where applicable, consists of a single stage primary crusher followed by a semiautogeneous - ball mill grinding circuit to produce feed for a flotation circuit. Multiple flotation circuits have been eliminated in most cases. These concepts minimize the cost and encourage the use of large capacity equipment while maintaining optimum metallurgical recovery. The philosophy of mill modernization/modification is generally driven by the desire to increase the mill capacity within the limits of the existing mill building. This need is facilitated by using large size flotation equipment and eliminating multiple parallel flotation circuits in order to minimize capital and operating costs. Conventional flotation machine development has paralleled this mill design philosophy. FLOTATION CELL DESIGN Since froth flotation has been the most widely used separation process for over half a century, one would expect that it would be possible to design and select flotation machines for specific applications based on scientific principles. But this has not been the case. Best judgment, experience and personal prejudice have played a key role in equipment selection. These factors, along with the difficulty of evaluating new concepts in commercial plants, has slowed progress in implementation and commercialization of innovative ideas and/or equipment. Conventional Flotation There have been no major technological advances in conventional flotation cell design in recent years. A recent flotation cell survey indicates that 'larger flotation cells are still the order of the day.”(1) A comprehensive review of design of flotation machines indicate that they have been mechanically redesigned and are generally simpler and easier to maintain and less expensive to manufacture. (2,3) The approximate chronological development of conventional cells from the 25 cubic foot cells to the 3000 cubic foot cells, which were recently installed at the Copperton concentrator of Utah Copper, is given in Table 1. Larger flotation cells are the obvious choice for new plants or plants looking for expansion because of the following reasons: • They have lower capital cost per unit volume • Installation costs are generally lower because fewer units require less space • Maintenance costs are lower because of fewer mechanisms • Power requirements (HP/ton dry feed) are generally lower • with increased flotation cell size as illustrated in Table 2 [Table 1. Large-scale coal mining will cause environmental problems such as aquifer damage, land excavation and occupation, soil erosion, vegetation damage, and regional landscape damage. The existing coal mine environmental restoration technology is relatively simple, and there is a lack of systematic research on environmental total factors. Based on the mechanism of coal mining damage and the laws of environmental natural succession, the concept of “coal environmental protection mining” is proposed, which combines damage reduction mining and environmental element system restoration. In accordance with the environmental protection principle of “source protection, process damage reduction, and systematic restoration,” a technical system of “coal environmental protection mining” is constructed for the two types of mining damage scenarios: underground mining and open-pit mining. In view of the damage characteristics of underground mining, source environmental protection technology based on optimization of mining process parameters, stability maintenance and damage reduction technology for overlying rock bearing arch shell structure, zoning and time-sharing treatment of surface cracks, and direct drainage irrigation technology for mine water have developed. In accordance with the damage characteristics caused by open-pit mining, land-saving and source reduction damage technology, near-natural stratigraphic reconstruction, topsoil improvement, and environmental storage and utilization technologies for seasonal precipitation have developed. By applying the technology in this paper, the maximum surface settlement value of 12401 working face in Shangwan coal mine was relatively reduced by 25%, the surface cracks have been adjusted from step-type cracks to dynamic small cracks, and since the technical implementation of the Shendong mining area in 2010, the vegetation coverage has increased loss and crushing decreased by 0.06 km2 every year, the environmental restoration period of the dump site was advanced by more than one year, and the vegetation coverage rate increased by 41.78% compared with the background value in the semi-arid area of the victory open-pit coal mine demonstration area. A surface reservoir with a water storage capacity of 400,000 cubic meters has been built, and the seasonal and graded utilization of mine water has been realized. An underground reservoir with a water storage capacity of 1.22 million square meters has been built in the Baorixiler open-pit coal mine.

The Fort Cady in situ borate mining project involves recovery of boron from a mineral deposit located over 1400 feet below the surface. The resource recovery method is being developed using in situ mining technology employing weak acid solution injected directly into the ore body. As the acid contacts the calcium based ore (primarily natural colemanite), the contained borate values are digested as boric acid. This boric acid solution is then pumped to the surface by use of submersible pumps. At the surface the borate values are recovered as a finely divided solid white powder after a series of chemical reactions and precipitations resulting in the production of calcium borate. The refined product is then sold under the trade name CADYCAL 100.TM All environmental permits for up to a production rate of 90,000 tons per year have been obtained. These permits required an Environmental Impact study (EIS) for federal lands and an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the private portion of the property. Regulatory permitting required over 5 years to obtain all the various authorizations for this project. The ore body has an average thickness of 118 feet extending over 273 acres. At a production rate of 90,000 tons per year with only a 70 percent resource recovery allowance, in place reserves are sufficient to sustain production for over one hundred years.

"What do you think are the most important topics in mineral processing today? It is a question that begs to be asked when more than 100 of some of the best and brightest in Colorado mineral processing and their invited guests are gathered in one room. They are there for the 66th Annual Colorado MPD Meeting held at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs: three days of finely curated talks and social events where participation was strong, and information was exchanged and connections forged in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.Water, tailings and social licenseNot surprisingly, water management, with the associated issues of tailings and social license, was high on the minds of those present. The Mount Polley and Samarco tailings dam failures have had repercussions across the industry. “There are big challenges with respect to tailings, and social and environmental pressures to find better ways to treat them,” said Steve Hearn of Huntsman Corp., a view echoed by Bob Kilborn of Kilborn Group LLC. Metso Minerals director Keith Butler said, “Water conservation is a key issue today. Many mining activities are now located in remote areas, so it has social and economic impacts on mining operations.” For Brian Olson of Samuel Engineering, wastewater and reclaimed-water treatment is interesting.Fittingly, the first talk of the meeting was on dry stack tailings by Michael Blois of Takraf USA, who went over both the advantages and disadvantages. “The average now is over one tailings dam failure a year,” Blois said, “and that is one too many.” But the technology may not be the right fit for all projects. In his talk on the KSM project, Jay Layman, president and COO of Seabridge Gold, showed how it isn’t practical for KSM and how Seabridge reached the decision on a cyclone sand tailings managementfacility as the preferred management strategy.The luncheon keynote also dealt with a tailings pond spill, but of a different kind. Bob Schafer, chief executive of Eagle Mines Management, spoke on the federal missteps that led to the spill into the Animas River from the Gold King Mine, a mine that had been a dry mine throughout its life and up to the 1990s."
