This paper describes several variants of placement and design, from a technical and economic point of view, of shafts, ore bunkers and drifts near shafts of a Russian potash mine. Advantages and disadvantages of the position of different workings are shown as well as an analysis of stratigraphic and geological layers and their use for excavating pit bottoms, haulage drifts and bunker installations. The potash mine consists of two hoisting shafts and one service shaft. The hoisting capacity of one of these skip shafts is planned to be approx. 7 Million tons of crude potash salt per year. Both shafts together will have a hoisting volume of about 14 Million tons. When the mine will increase their highest level of production, it will be one of the biggest potash mines in the world. The skips, the hoist drives and the bunker near the shaft will belong to the largest ones worldwide, too. This paper specifies the features of such a double skip shaft pit in detail and demonstrates problems, which depend on the fact that the pit bottom is in a depth of nearly 1200 m.

Lundberg, along with five colleagues, will write CNC programs for the lathes and machining centers that manufacture Sandvik?s specially constructed casting. In 1999, Sandvik chose ESPRIT computer-aided-manufacturing (CAM) software by DP Technology to program its array of machine tools, and has worked with ESPRIT reseller Holotech, based in Örebro, since 2003.

John C. Greenway was responsible for much of my success in the seven years from what I called the end of my apprenticeship in exploration until I entered the Army in World War I. I first met Green- way on my return from Promontorio and, as he was replacing Powell, he was to be my boss. Even at first glance you couldn't help liking and trusting him. He was tall, well built, and erect-an old Yale athlete. After college he became a captain in the Rough Riders and a friend of Theodore Roosevelt, distinguishing himself in the Cuban campaign. He made good friends in all ranks of the Rough Riders, some later becoming leaders of industry and others following Greenway where-ever he went. After the Spanish War Greenway worked for iron mining companies around the Great Lakes and when the directors decided that Calumet and Arizona needed a new manager the ones who were also prominent in Oliver Iron Mining Co. selected Greenway It was a lucky choice for Greenway and for me. He became the best manager among those who ran the big copper mines He was open-minded in encouraging discussion and even opposition-until he made up his mind. Then, in military fashion, everyone must follow his decision without question. I think this is an essential of good management. Unfortunately a few did not feel this way and they had to leave. It was characteristic of those times that respect for the boss was so great that in the 16 years in which he was one of my best friends I, like all under him, always called him "Mr. Greenway." Soon after he arrived Greenway asked the leading mine operators in the southwest, Dr. Louis D. Ricketts and James S. Douglas, son of the Dr. James Douglas who had made Phelps Dodge great, to do special work for Calumet and Arizona. I found later that the object of the study was to determine the terms on which the half-dozen Warren District properties of Calumet and Arizona were to be joined in one

Tellurium (Te) is a rare metalloid that is predominantly produced from the treatment of anode slimes formed during copper (Cu) electrolytic refining. The US Government lists Te as one of the 50 critical minerals, partly, because of its use in thin-film photovoltaic (PV) technology. Given policy initiatives to increase Te production, it is important to evaluate the life-cycle environmental impacts of Te recovery as a by-product of Cu processing. The literature contains a few specific life cycle assessment (LCA) studies of groups of metals that include Te without proper regard to impacts per life-cycle stage of Te production or the effect of allocation on the results. This study builds an LCA model of the production system of Te from anode slimes treatment to evaluate the effect of allocation on life-cycle impacts. We build life cycle inventories using data from the Ecoinvent v3.7.1 database, literature, and engineering calculations and allocate impacts in proportion to products’ mass and economic value. The results show that economic value-based allocation yields greater impacts than mass-based allocation indicating the significant effect of the allocation approach on life-cycle impact estimates.

As part of an effort to provide basic data on the fundamental scientific and engineering principles of minerals beneficiation, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the flocculation of mineral fines. This paper presents results of studies using crosslinked starches containing carboxyl, diethanolamine, iminodiacetic acid, and xanthate groups to flocculate hematite, goethite, chromite, manganrte, pyrolusite, cuprite, and cassiterite fines. The carboxyl and xanthate derivatives flocculated all minerals except cassiterite; the latter was flocculated by only the diethanolamine derivative. The iminodiacetic acid derivative flocculated hematite, goethite, chromite, cuprite, and pryolusite fines. Zeta potential measurements were made to help define the reaction mechanism responsible for flocculation. These measurements indicate that electrostatic attraction probably is not involved, except possibly in the case of the diethano lamine derivative. The separation of hematite from quartz by selective flocculation with chelating cross- linked starches under two pH conditions and with two dispersing agents is described. Best recoveries and grades were found when either the carboxyl or xanthate derivatives was added at the natural pH of the pulp in the absence of a dupersing agent.

Introduction FMC's Paradise Peak gold mine was discovered by staff geologists in July 1983. Located south of Gabbs, in western Nevada, the deposit contains about 11 Mt (12 million st) of ore grading at 3.6 g/t (0.105 oz per st) of gold and 129 g/t (3.75 oz per st) silver. It is estimated that the ore contains 34 t (1.1 million oz) of recoverable gold and 933 t (30 million oz) of recoverable silver. The 3.6 kt/d (4000 stpd) mill began operation April 14, 1986, just 18 months after Davy McKee completed a feasibility study and construction, and two-and-a-months ahead of schedule. It also came in about 10% under budget at a cost of about $100 million. Crushing Run-of-mine ore is delivered from the mine in 45-t (50-st) haul trucks to a 272-kt (300,000-st) capacity open air stockpile. Ore is reclaimed using 5 m3 (7 cu yd) front-end loaders that feed a 91-t (100-st) hopper equipped with a 610- x 610-mm (24- x 24-in.) grizzly. A 1.4- x 11-m (54-in. x 35-ft) apron feeder delivers ore from the hopper by way of a vibrating grizzly screen with 127 mm (5 in.) openings to a 1- x 1.3-m (43- x 51-in.) Rexnord jaw crusher. Crushed material is conveyed to a 1.8- x 4-m (6- x 14-ft) Link Belt vibrating screen equipped with a 50-mm (2-in.) manganese grizzly bar deck. Screen oversize is fed to a 1.7/0.6-m (5.5 ft) Rexnord standard cone crusher. Product from this crusher joins the -50 mm (-2 in.) screen undersize and is conveyed to a 136-t (150-st) surge bin. Three hydraulically driven belt feeders deliver ore from the ore bin to three 2 x 6 m (7 x 20 ft) Link Belt single-deck tertiary screens fitted with 6 x 25 mm (0.25 x 1 in.) slotted polyethylene screens. Screen undersize - -6 mm (-0.25 in.) rock - is conveyed to a 3.6-kt (4000-st) ore storage bin. Screen oversize is delivered by way of a conveyor to a 91-t (100-st) surge bin. From this bin, two belt feeders feed ore to two 1.7 m (66 in.) Rexnord Gyradisc crushers, which are in closed circuit with the tertiary screens. Design features include magnetic protection for tramp iron removal and sloping floors and pump sumps for ease of clean up. Dust scrubbers keep the working environment clean and in compliance with state dust emission regulations. Grinding Two 1 x 4.5 m (3.5 x 15 ft) belt feeders deliver ore from the fine ore bin to a conveyor belt that feeds it to the 5 x 7 m (16 x 22 ft) Allis-Chalmers ball mill. The conveyor belt is equipped with a Merrick weightometer. This controls feed rate to the ball mill by speed control on the hydraulic motors driving the feeders. The 2.6 MW (3500 hp) powered mill grinds 3.6 kt/a (4000 stpd) to an average grind of 85% -75 µm (-200 mesh). The mill is in closed circuit with four 660 mm (26 in.) Krebs cyclones. Three of these are normally in operation while one is a standby. Warman pumps feed the cyclones through a cyclone distribution manifold. The cyclone underflow returns to the ball mill, which has a 300% average circulating load. Mill discharge pH is 11, and that is obtained through pebble lime addition to the feed belt. Cyclone overflow is sampled using a Heath & Sherwood two-stage sampler. It then flows to a 27-m-diam (90-ft-diam) Eimco thickener. Thickener overflow is returned to the grinding circuit, while underflow at 50% solids is pumped to the leaching circuit. Grinding-circuit design features include a steeply sloped floor for ease of clean up, an open area over the pumps for maintenance accessibility, and a ball hopper with a self discharge bottom to speed ball addition. Other features include a mill liner handler and an air clutch that connects the mill motor to the mill.

OBJECTIVES OF RADIATION MONITORING Monitoring is a tool used in the practice of radiation protection. The primary reasons for monitoring are to reduce radiation exposures to levels that are as low as reasonably achievable and to assure that no individual receives a dose exceeding the maximum individual dose limit. The documentation of radiation doses for legal, medical, or epidemiological reasons is a subordinate function of any monitoring program. The investment in radiation monitoring programs should be guided by four criteria: (1) the detection and avoidance of unnecessary exposures, (2) the magnitude of potential health risks, (3) the determination of combined doses and risks with adequate confidence, and (4) the verification of compliance with established limits. FIRST CRITERION: DOSE REDUCTION - DETECT AND CORRECT UNNECESSARY EXPOSURES The system of dose limitation advocated by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP, 1977), and subscribed to in a broad sense by various regulatory agencies, is comprised of three essential ingredients: (1) [justification] of any practice that produces radiation doses by some commensurate net benefit, (2) [optimization] of radiation control measures by reducing doses to levels that are as low as reasonably achievable, and (3) [limitation] of individual doses to preclude inequities and [moldistribution] of risks. All too often, only the third criterion - the limitation of individual doses to prescribed regulatory limits - is explicitly addressed in everyday radiation protection programs. The emphasis of most exposure control and monitoring efforts appears to be directed toward limiting and documenting individual doses that might approach the legal limit. The first two criteria, i.e. justification and optimization, should contribute to a rationale for allocating monitoring efforts. When applied to individuals, these criteria mean the detection and elimination of unnecessary exposures. This should be a high priority of any monitoring program. Measurements should be directed toward detecting inoperative or ineffective control measures, whether or not there is a risk of exceeding the individual dose limits. The ICRP recommends a procedure that can be used effectively to reduce unnecessary exposures. A n investigation level should be established at an exposure rate substantially lower than the regulatory limit, e.g. 30% of the limit (ICRP 26, 1977, p.33). Measurements obtained during routine monitoring that exceed the investigation level are evaluated with respect to cause and potential reduction. To be effective, the evaluation results should be formally recorded and conveyed both to management and to the workers involved. Although the investigation level recommended by the ICRP is based on a fixed exposure rate or derived air concentration, an equally effective evaluation program may be based on the investigation of a percentage of all measurements. For example, one might investigate the highest 5% or a random selection of all measurements. In any case, the objective is to detect and correct situations that are producing unnecessary exposures. SECOND CRITERION: MONITOR IN PROPORTION TO THE MAGNITUDE OF RISK The ICRP criteria apply generally to all radiation exposures. However, a second priority for monitoring programs should be established on the basis of the nature of the exposures and the magnitude of the health risks involved. Current practices in radiation protection are based on dose limits to specific organs and assessment of individual exposure pathways, with little consideration of the combined doses from various pathways. Although the intent of the ICRP recommendations was to limit the total dose to each critical organ, combined doses from external and internal sources are rarely determined. The recent recommendations of the ICRP (Publ. 26, 1977) are based on the limitation of total health risk from occupational radiation exposures. Implementation of this concept would necessarily require the measurement, calculation and summation of doses and concomitant risks to all organs of the body from all exposure pathways. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has taken the first step toward translating the ICRP recommendations into regulations. The proposed recommendations for Federal Radiation Protection Guidance for Occupational Exposures (USEPA, 1981) include provisions for summing the risk-weighted organ doses to determine compliance with an effective whole-body dose equivalent limit. Whether or not the proposed guidance is modified before final adoption, it seems clear that some version of dose summation and combined risk limitation will be included in future regulations. The primary and secondary organic matter in sedimentary rocks changes markedly when it becomes heated as a consequence of thick sediment accumulation and normal geothermal gradients, high geothermal gradients, hydrothermal fluids, or igneous events. Contact zones adjacent to small igneous dikes allow sampling of a single sedimentary bed that has been exposed to temperatures in a range as great as 30-500°C. Dike-heated rocks are, therefore, good sites for research on thermal effects because variation of the original organic matter is minimal, the range of heating is great, and the history of rock heating in a dike zone is relatively well established. In rare cases, such as at the dike near Wolcott, Colorado, described in this paper, the rock samples are sufficiently unweathered to allow analysis of secondary bitumens generated by the heating. We show by optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and geochemistry the kinds of solid organic constituents in sedimen¬tary rocks and in ore deposits and the effects of heating. The primary phytoclasts that make up kerogen In sedimentary rock and in some ore deposits (pollen, resin, charcoal, humified woody remains, etc.) change in ways that are familiar to coal specialists. Progressive loss of moisture and other volatile matter yields residual kerogen that Is relatively higher in carbon and lower In oxygen and hydrogen, and has greater molecular or polymer ordering. In our contact zone examples, atomic H/C ratios of kerogen decrease from 0.8 (one case from 1.4) to 0.4, the hydrogen index from Rock-Eval pyrolysis decreases from 70 to 5, and the transformation ratio from Rock-Eval pyrolysis increases from 0.06 to 0.5 with increased heating. The visible effects of heating seen by scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy include formation of vesicles and flow structure, the development of optical anisotropy and mesophase, change of color, and increase in the refractive index, absorption, and reflectance. Some of these changes In primary organic matter are observed also in secondary organic matter, for example, in solid bitumens in sedimentary gold ores or In lead-zinc deposits. Quantification of color or absorption changes is difficult because it Is hard to make thin sections of organic matter with uniform thickness. However, natural objects with uniform thickness can be used. We show the colors of pollen In rocks from the Salton geothermal field at temperatures ranging from 100 to 300°C, and of pollen heated in laboratory bombs from 150 to 400°C. Measurement of vitrinite reflectance is a practical way to quantify thermal changes of kerogen and minerals of most sedimentary rocks because vitrinite is fairly widespread In sedimentary rocks of Devonian age and younger. For example, the reflectance of vitrinite rises from the regional level, as low as 0.4 % Ro, to more than 5% Ro adjacent to dikes that cut sedimentary rock. This is equivalent to the rank change from subbituminous coal to extreme meta-anthracite. The rise is most abrupt near thin dikes, but when the distance from the igneous contact is expressed as a ratio of dike thickness the reflectance rise is similar for all dikes. Controlled heating of vitrinite-bearing rocks In the laboratory provides a means to assign known temperatures to vitrinite-reflectance values. The derived plots of temperature In dike contact zones have the same shape and level as those predicted by heat theory, and the temperature lines extend toward dike contact temperatures that are about half those of most magmas, as expected if the intrusions did not flow past the sedimentary rock for a long time. The globular submicroscopic structure of vitrinite and Its heterogeneity, which we show by means of transmission electron microscopy, pose some problems In selecting a uniform type of vitrinite for measurement of thermal changes. At present, routine reflectance values of vitrinite dispersed in rocks have a relative uncertainty as great as 10%. Thermally caused chemical changes in the primary kerogen, especially decrease in the oxygen and hydrogen contents, lead to formation of secondary products in the contact zone. The measured changes of secondary organic products in these rocks include formation of peaks In concentration of total extractable organic matter and in hydrocarbons, and in the saturated/aromatic hydrocarbon ratio over the interval where primary organic hydrogen decreases most rapidly--then destruction or expulsion of these products at high temperatures. The odd carbon-number predominance of the C25-C31 n-alkanes In samples far from the dike disappears by about 1.3% Ro whereas the 13C: 12C ratios of the saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons increase over most of the thermal range. The saturated aromatic hydrocarbon ratio at first increases, corresponding to thermal generation of saturated hydrocarbons, then decreases in the most altered samples. One use of organic petrography, in addition to identifying organic fades or thermal alteration, is recognition of sample contamination such as the solid organic additives used in some drilling muds which may contaminate geochemical samples.

My presentation is from the viewpoint of the industrial mineral geologist, which is a relatively rare breed. Very few geologists become involved with industrial minerals for two reasons, I think: (1) Much of the industry utilizing non-metallic minerals has developed without the use of geologists in the begin¬ning and many of the management people, who generally derive from the processing plant supervision, tend to take raw materials for granted; and (2) non-metallic minerals are a very insignificant part of the curriculum of virtually all colleges granting a geology degree. One learns about the geology of industrial minerals by working with it. This "on-the-job-training" is probably best because it brings the geologist into close quarters with the production people and the production process. And the industrial minerals field has a distinctiveness when compared with the petroleum or metal mining field in that each deposit can yield a material differing in some aspect from that in any other or within the same deposit. The petroleum from a well in a given field will be similar to that from any other well, but a limestone on one side of a hill can differ signifi¬cantly in elemental composition, calcinability, soundness, specific gravity, or some other factor from the same ledge on the other side of the hill. This characteristic of almost certain variability creates problems sooner or later and provides for much of the employment of industrial mineral geologists. My job seen from the viewpoint of management is "Find us some rock we can extract and process at a profit." The industrial non-metallic geologist has much the same problems and approach as a detective. I do not mean the TV variety with the big mouths and the unfailing knack of spotting the wanted criminal immediately in a city of ten million people. Any real detective will tell you it takes leg-work, knowhow, and persistence to make a case. The same is true for the geologist who finds rock which can be quarried at a profit. Engineers today face a tremendous challenge. Growing population and rising standards of living all over the world are creating unprecedented and accelerating demands on and for all kinds of technology. At the same time, the public is becoming more and more conscious of--and concerned with--the impact of technology on human welfare. The growing controversy over the Supersonic Transport is a case in point, It is clear that the modern engineer must expect to spend a growing share of his time considering this dilemma and evaluating the tools that are available to him, not only with respect to their adequacy for the job at hand but also their capability for meeting the increasingly demanding--and, in many cases, conflicting--requirements of the future. This meeting seems a particularly appropriate place to speculate about the future of mining technology. The summary of the state-of-the-art in surface mining contained in the papers scheduled for the International Conference, together with the recently published Surface Mining volume, constitute not only a major contribution to the technical literature but also form an impressive record of technologic progress. That record, and the advanced technology displayed in the exhibits, and to be discussed in the SME technical sessions demonstrate engineering achievement in which the mining community can justly take pride.

The majority of the regulations in Part 75 for underground coal mines have been in effect since March of 1970, almost nine years now. Although there have been some additions each year in specific areas where the need became apparent or the statute required some action, the bulk was promulgated on March 28, 1970 for the purpose of clarifying the statutory provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Many of those regulations were derived from the Federal Mine Safety Code, or from experience gained by the Bureau of Mines in the enforcement of Public Law 552. Upon passage of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, these same regulations remained in effect and the statutory requirements of the Act placed a responsibility upon the Secretary of Labor to promulgate additional regulations in specific areas not previously covered. The Federal inspectorate has received formal training at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy in the proper application of the regulations, as well as routine retraining and special training courses subsequent to the promulgation of new regulations. With some exceptions, the vast majority of these regulations are nothing more than good mining practice. Basically, the regulatory problems are two-fold. There are a few specific regulations that, under certain circumstances, compliance is nearly, if not actually, impossible. There is non-uniform application of enforcement of regulations by the inspectorate based on opinions developed from personal experience of inspectors or lack of experience. The record is replete with examples of overzealous inspectors applying regulations that either do not exist or have been stretched far beyond the intent of the regulations.

The demand placed on the mining industry in the past 15 years for increased production, coupled with lower grade ore and higher cost capital, has resulted in a noticeable increase in grinding mill sizes. The pressure to increase mill size continues. During the mid sixty's and early seventy's, ?larger? conventional ball mills were in the range of 13 - 16-1/2 f t. diameter (4 - 5 m) increasing by the mid 70's to 18 ft. (5.5 m) diameter. At the same time, autogenous mills expanded from 24 - 32 ft. (7.3 - 9.1 m) to the present 34 and 36 ft. (10.b and 11.0 m) diameters. These size pioneers of 16-1/2, 18, and 36 ft. diameter mills from Allis-Chalmers have been free from structural problems, because they were analyzed, modeled, designed, and field tested to meet the challenge.

The high costs and environmental problems associated with making iron and steel in the United states is driving the development of new technologies to replace the blast furnace. A prototype reactor incorporating rocket technology was designed and built. This rapid rate reactor was operated successfully and consistently made iron metal. Minus 32s-mesh magnetite particles could be reduced to iron metal in less than 50 ms in a high temperature flow through reactor. Iron product was recovered inside the reactor and in a downstream cyclonic separator. The results of typical operation and how parametric changes affected the reduction of iron ore concentrates are discussed.

This map shows general trends of the chloride concentration of water in the upper part of the Floridan aquifer. Below this part of the aquifer, high chloride water can be found everywhere in the State. The accompanying cross section shows the depth to salty water across central Florida. In the center of Florida, fresh water may be found as deep as 2.000 feet, whereas, along the coast it may extend no deeper than about 200 feet. Chloride concentration in small local areas may deviate from the values represented on both the cross section and the main map. The Coal Creek Preparation Plant is the coal cleaning facility of Mid-Continent Coal and Coke Company. Located three miles west of Redstone, Colorado, and at an elevation of 8,040 feet the preparation plant cleans coal produced at the company's Dutch Creek Mine and L. S. Wood Mine. (See Fig.1.) Current production is at the rate of 2500 tons per day clean coal. Plant capacity is rated 350 TPH raw coal. Reject rates vary with mining conditions from 8% to 25%. Factors which influenced the design of the coal cleaning facility were the characteristics of the coal, the location in a tourist oriented resort area, and the extreme winters of the area. Lack of areas suitable for settling ponds and the necessity of keeping effluent waters out of the fishing streams dictated a closed circuit plant. Severe winter conditions, which last six to seven months out of the year and temperatures which have dropped to 40° F. below zero on occasions demanded that the plant be totally insulated and enclosed indoors.

"INTRODUCTION Since the introduction, several decades ago, of the first concepts of tunnel boring machines (TBMs), the unremitting increase of mechanized and automated tasks and the reduction of manual tasks carried out by human operators have gone hand in hand with the continuous improvement of these machines. In the present state of TBMs, the replacement of worn cutting tools is a critical, tedious, and dangerous manual operation especially for earth pressure balanced (EPB) and slurry TBMs. For such pressurized TBMs, hyperbaric interventions are used. They consist in replacing the pressurized soil/mud inside the chamber with compressed air that balances the face pressure. The operators can then ""dive"" into the chamber; however, because the human body cannot naturally undergo pressure changes, they have to follow strict procedures that have been developed for subsea divers, based on decompression stops. Indeed such interventions are actually quite often performed by professional deep-sea divers. The pressurized TBMS are consequently equipped with a manlock that allows for the required compression and decompression cycles. Hyperbaric interventions increase risk to the operators and require long decompression procedures that increase the TBM idle time and reduce its efficiency. At higher pressures, over 3.5 bar (ITA Report No 10, 2011), specific equipment and special gas mixes and/or saturation techniques are recommended (Lamont, 2012). Such procedures are even more expensive and time consuming although the duration of work in the pressurized area can be very limited for health and safety reasons. Contractors are therefore increasingly interested in automating these operations to reduce the risks to human workers and improve the TBMs performance. Moreover, the demand for new, ambitious and challenging tunneling projects (very deep, high pressure boring) is ever increasing, but the supply of suitable TBMs is limited and the risk from working in the hyperbaric environments becomes increasingly unacceptable. Impact of hyperbaric interventions The UK Health & Safety Executive has analyzed the consequences of working in intermediate pressure compressed air. The retrospective study of decompression illness (DCI) indicated that at certain pressures its incidence was around 2% of all exposures. More worryingly it showed that over 20% of the exposures commonly undertaken by shift workers in tunneling (those over 1 bar pressure for 4 hours or more) resulted in DCI. It was concluded that on some contracts up to 50% of shift production workers experienced DCI at some time during the contract, a situation which was considered to be wholly unacceptable (Lamont, 2006)."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) established on August 15, 1983, a Generic Mineral f Technology Center (GTC) for Respirable Dust within the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institutes (MRIs) at The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and West Virginia University (WW) in association with participating MRIs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Minnesota (UMN). The primary goal of the Center is to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease through researching and advancing the fundamental under- standing of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling and the interaction of dust and lungs. Other Center activities include the training of engineers and scientists, graduate students and undergraduate students through their respective institutions, and the technology transfer to the industry. The Center also serves as the reference center for publications in the respirable dust area.

Computer-based mine management systems are being used in many surface mines to assign haul trucks, track equipment and manage information. Advances in digital communications allow these systems to be used in underground operations. Underground mine management systems help maximize production by providing gains in equipment and manpower use, drawpoint equalization in block caving operations, preventive maintenance and safety. Current systems use allocated or "locked" train and load-haul-dump (LHD) dispatching. Allocated dispatching rarely optimizes open pit product' on. But it offers an efficient mode of operation underground and where options are more limited. The primary objectives of underground mine management systems are to maximize production and mini¬mize contention time through allocated train, truck or LHD dispatching, traffic control, equipment monitoring and comprehensive reporting. The main components of an underground mine management system include: ? A central computer (personal computer or worksta¬tion) in a central control center. It sends instructions to train, truck or LHD drivers and allows dispatcher interaction. ? A field computer system (FCS). This consists of a touch-screen graphics console (GC) and mobile hub - on each train, truck or LHD to receive and display instructions from the central computer and accept driver input. ? A data radio network based on leaky feeder (data, voice, video) or microcell radios (data only) and advanced token-ring technology. This passes information between the central computer and the FCSs. ? Radio frequency (RF) tags mounted at boxes, weigh bridges, tips and rim tunnel main haulage ways to locate trains or LHDs (Luke, 1993). Such a management system must be in place before implementing computer-based dispatching (Vagenas, 1991) for production optimization.

The sedimentation and dewatering characteristics of flocculated slurries are determined by the size and density of the flocs. Studies of the formation and growth of flocs reveal that floc size is limited by breakage of the agglomerates due to shear in the suspension. Floc density measurements indicate that there is an inverse relationship between size and density. This relationship appears to be determined primarily by the nature of the solid particles, especially the size distribution, but it appears that agitation of the suspension can lead to some densification of the flocs, in addition to breakage. It follows that both size and density can be controlled to a significant extent by regulating the physical conditions (agitation, method of flocculant addition etc.) during flocculation. The use of physical floc conditioning to control the sedimentation and dewatering (filtration) behavior of flocculated, fine-particle suspensions is evaluated in terms of its effects on floc size end density.
