Theoretical development of comminution models has come about in the last 10 years. These models assume that the material being broken is homogeneous and that the compression or energy wave is uniform throughout the specimen. Obviously, this is not the case because most comminuted materials are rocks with either many phases and/or definite grain size. The mathematical models deriving the size distribution of daughter fragments resulting from the comminution of brittle, single particles are of two schools. The first model, proposed by Gilvarry in 1961, was based on the concept of volume, surface, and edge flaw activation. The second, proposed by Meloy in 1960, was based on the concept that the crack density is a function of the energy in the comminution wave. The flaw theory has run into increasing theoretical problems and is now being abandoned. On the other hand, the crack density theory has been expanded and has successfully considered the case where there are inhomogeneities in the comminutive wave. However, the main constraint of a homogeneity in the solid being comminuted has hitherto never been overcome. In this paper, a very general derivation of the crack density model is made for inhomogeneous solids by replacing the assumption of homogeneity with an arbitrary function, P(y), which describes the susceptibility of the material to comminution as a function of position. The restraints on this function, P(y), are very broad and, hence, the derivation is extremely general. General use of the equation derived necessitates a detailed a priori knowledge of both the fracture process and of the physical properties of the material being fractured; this knowledge is expressed in open form as, P(y), the linear probability density that a plane of fracture intersects at point y on an arbitrarily oriented line segment of total length xo through the original particle. From these assumptions, a general expression for the cumulative mass distribution of particles resulting from fracture is then postulated. It is: [ ] where, B(x), is a cumulative mass of material finer than size x, r is the average number of crack,, (y), is defined above and xo is the initial particle size. It is shown that suitable assumptions reduce the expression to the theoretical results of Gaudin and Meloy and to special forms of the empirical equations of Rosin-Rammler, Gaudin and Schuhmann. Semi quantitative agreement is demonstrated by Grimshaw with experimental results of a very complex fracture of heterogeneous sandstone blocks. A need is expressed for more theoretical development of P(y), and a more extensive experimental study of both homogeneous and heterogeneous fracture. The full mathematical derivation is presented for the first time in this paper. The general implications of the equation and its application are also discussed.

One of the several problems facing society today is that of disposing of its solid waste. Each year this nation spends approximately 4.5 billion dollars to collect, transport and dispose of some 360 million tons of domestic and industrial solid waste. Although considerable sums of time and money have been spent in researching various techniques for solid waste disposal, it is presently agreed that sanitary landfilling represents the most economic and universally adaptable solution to the problem of solid waste disposal. However, regardless of the factors favoring sanitary landfilling as the waste disposal method of choice, it should be recognized as carrying with it a potential for the degradation of ground- and surfacewater resources. Through an interdisciplinary effort regulations were promulgated during 1971 in the State of Iowa to govern sanitary disposal projects. Consistent with a set of rationales developed to preserve environmental quality, these regulations set forth hydrologic and geologic standards designed to protect Iowa's water resources. Minimum requirements have been outlined in the regulations through which the natural favorability of potential landfill sites may be evaluated. Natural favorability is primarily defined in terms of the hydrologic and geologic relationships between a proposed landfill site and those in the locality of the site. The regulations specify that leakage from a landfill to a subcropping aquifer must be less than 0.04 cu ft/day/sq ft at the base of the landfill. This factor is offered to quantify the maximum allowable leakage for all sites in unconsolidated sequences underlain by subcropping bedrock aquifers, Based on groundwater research in Iowa, the assumption is made that 50 feet of till will be sufficient to inhibit the downward flow of liquids from a landfill into bedrock aquifers. This assumes a difference of no greater than 40 feet in hydrostatic head between the water table in the unconsolidated sequence and that in the bedrock aquifer. Owing to the fact that bedrock aquifers in many areas of the state are mantled by less than 50 feet of till the regulations provide for site modification, through engineering, to meet the specified leakage standard, In such instances the leakage factor is evaluated by means of the generalized Darcy's Law Q = PIA where:

Longwall mining is a highly productive and efficient coal mining method used in the USA. During longwall retreating, the belt entry must be maintained stable, and any roof fall in the belt entry would jeopardize mine safety and substantially interrupt the continuous production of coal in the longwall face. Past experience of longwall mining has shown that belt entry stability was the greatest challenge in longwall ground control, and the occurrence of roof falls in belt entries was largely associated with high horizontal stress. To properly support the roof in the belt entry, it is important to understand how longwall-induced horizontal stress changes affect roof stability in belt entries and to strategically install supplementary support to prevent any potential roof falls. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed horizontal stress measurements in the immediate roof of the belt entries for two Pittsburgh seam longwall panels oriented unfavorably to high horizontal stress. Hollow inclusion cells (HICells) were installed in the immediate roof at the intersection in each of the belt entries, and stress changes were monitored as the longwall face was approaching and passing the intersection. Numerical models were set up to calculate the longwall-induced horizontal stress changes in the roof at the monitoring sites. With the verified model, investigations were made of how horizontal stress is concentrated and relieved in the belt entry roof near the face under different panel orientations. Both measurements and modeling results showed that high horizontal stress is concentrated in the roof in the belt entry within about 15 m outby the face when a longwall panel is unfavorably oriented to the major horizontal stress. The study demonstrated that longwall-induced differential horizontal stress can be used as an indication of the degree of horizontal stress concentration. Roof support strategies are discussed on how to maintain the stability of belt entry under high horizontal stress concentration.

Many coal mining companies have potential surface mine reserves which either are known or suspected to have had prior drift mining activity on them. In many cases, there is no documentation on these mines or at best, very fragmented records. These undocumented abandoned underground mines are creating engineering, financial, and environmental difficulties and concerns for both surface coal mine operators and regulatory personnel. This paper examines the use of resistivity techniques in detecting entries of abandoned drift coal mines. The detection of such a drift mine entry would confirm the presence and orientation of an abandoned underground coal mine.

Its a pleasure to be with you this afternoon and to talk briefly on one of my favorite subjects -- the U.S. sulphur industry. As our Chairman mentioned, I have been associated with the sulphur industry either directly or indirectly for the last twenty years, both on the production side and as a consumer. Sulphur, while unseen and relatively unknown to most people, is like margarine ... that ubiquitous spread ... that is yellow and nearly omnipresent in the industrial world. It is because sulphur, in some form, is required in nearly all aspects of our economy that makes its study so interesting to me as a researcher. An analysis of the sulphur outlook requires examination of such industries as fertilizer, paints and pigments, copper and zinc, uranium, petroleum, chemicals, pulp and paper and textiles - just to name a few. Of course, because its use is so widespread and ever-changing it is difficult to develop and maintain a good understanding of the sulphur industry. It is also a problem to cover the industry in a short discussion and to project its really dynamic nature. Hut, if you will bear with me, I will attempt the task. First of all, let me say that sulphur today is a world commodity and to a large extent moves freely in world trade; nearly a third of the world's sulphur or something over 15 million tons in 1974 entered international trade. However, today our interest is in the current changing sulphur picture in the U.S., with particular emphasis on the western part of the country.

Over 2 million tons of steel furnace dusts are produced each year in the United States. Recycling of these dusts rather than disposal would conserve mineral resources, reduce land requirements for disposal, and decrease pollution. In addition to the iron content, the dusts contain appreciable amounts of zinc and lead. Removal of lead and zinc with simultaneous reduction of Iron oxide has been achieved by inert atmosphere roasting of carbon-containing pellets prepared from steel furnace wastes. High- and low-carbon wastes were blended to obtain mixtures with sufficient carbon to serve as a reductant during subsequent roasting. The mixtures were pelletized with the addition of bentonite and water, and the dried pellets were roasted in a stream of nitrogen at temperatures ranging from 900" to 1,150° C. Zinc and lead contents were reduced to the 0.1 percent level or less by roasting mixtures containing as little as 7 percent carbon for 1 hour at 1,100° C. ton metallization increases with available carbon content; 50 percent metallization is achieved with 7 percent carbon, 85 percent metallization with 12.5 percent carbon, and over 95 percent metallization when the pelletized mixtures contained in excess of 20 percent carbon.

Japan's coal reserves are estimated at 8,583 million tons (according to the materials on X World Energy Conference,. 1976). Japan is a long island country in the shape of an elongated cashew nut whose top is pointing to the north and its lower tip is pointing to the west. And her major coal fields are located in the two extreme far parts of Hokkaido in the north and Kyushu in the south. On the other hand, Japan's major industrial center are located in the central part of the country far from either coal-producing areas. This fact places coal a great geographical disadvantage in comparison with petroleum whose refining bases are concentrated on the coastal regions virtually next to major industrial centers.

Treatment of plant effluent including waste water and associated soluble and insoluble substances, is of a primary concern of many process industries including mineral processing operations. The major objective of such treatment is the removal of such impurities which can interfere with the process through the use of recycled water, and/or to comply with environmental ordinances. For example, Ramirez and Clements (1978) state that molybdenum contents in the range of 19 mg/1 eventually poison ion exchange resigns used for the extraction of uranium. In addition, recent restrictions by the EPA on molybdenum discharge values for mining waste water necessitate removal of this metal to (0.5-1.0 mg/1).

INTRODUCTION Mined underground chambers specifically designed for the purpose of storing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) at ambient temperatures have been in use for over thirty years. The first caverns were developed by Warren Petroleum of Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1948, for its plants in Texas. The basic concept of an LPG-storage cavern is to create a space in an impervious formation at a depth sufficiently below the water table so that if any movement of fluid occurs the ground water will enter rather than the gas escape from the cavern. In the past, the primary reason for LPG storage underground has been its attractive cost advantages over steel storage on the surface. At current prices the cost of storing 7.949 ML (50,000 barrels) would be equivalent, whether stored on the surface or underground; whereas 79.494 ML (500,000 barrels) of storage underground costs only one-fifth of surface storage. It is usually uneconomical to excavate less than 79.494 cu m (50,000 barrels) of storage space. The fixed costs - engineering, mainshaft and ventilation shaft - are a substantial part of the total cost, whereas the incremental costs for excavating additional storage are relatively low. Recent concern over the hazards posed by the handling and storage of LPG and liquefied natural gas (LNG) has led to a new interest in the underground storage of these gases. Rock damage around underground excavations has been an important hazard in mines and tunnels. Rock dilation generates buckling that needs to be contained before it causes damage to equipment or safety concerns to mine workers. In seismically active mines, rockburst occurrence has been widely recognized as one of the most important hazards in deep mines and tunnels. While there is a wide range of cases where rockburst hazard can be mitigated through dedicated excavation sequences, reentry procedures or exclusion zones, there are still many situations where large unexpected rockbursting may occur, relying only on rock support as the last mitigation measure to prevent production and safety losses. Considering the previous situations, surface support as mesh, plays a major role containing the failed/ejected rock and providing a safe working environment to the underground operations. While there have been considerable achievements in improving mesh resistance, with more than 26Kj/m2 of energy dissipation capacity, there is still a lack of research in the overlapping mechanism and load transfer between contiguous mesh elements. This paper presents the state of the art in static and dynamic analysis of welded and rolled mesh overlaps, based on experimentation carried on by Geobrugg in their Research Center, leaving clearly established that the difference in meshes is not only in levels of energy absorption, but also concluding that in the case of high resistance rolled meshes overlapping is not necessary and the transmission of stresses can be fully guaranteed by using suitable connecting elements. All these characteristics, supported by operational advantages as light weight and mechanized mesh installation, provides a considerable improvement in safety and productivity, improving the economic value of the project

(XP) enclosures to enclose electrical ignition sources to prevent propagation of an internal methane-air explosion to a surrounding explosive atmosphere. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a lithium-ion battery thermal runaway test within a modified MSHA-approved XP enclosure to assess thermal runaway containment. Thermal runaway produced jet flames emanating from the cover joint at several locations and distorted the cover joint and bottom plate of the enclosure beyond allowable limits. The test demonstrates that XP enclosures may not provide adequate explosion protection against lithium-ion battery thermal runaway. This paper suggests some approaches to mitigate the hazard.

Introduction Screening is an art, one of the oldest in the process field today, and one of the most widely used in our present age. Screening is being applied to an ever-increasing number of assignments, in an ever-expanding circle of industries. Screening is defined precisely as a mechanical process which accomplishes a separation of particles on the basis of size and their acceptance or rejection by a screening surface. Particles are presented to apertures in a screening surface and rejected if larger than the opening, or accepted and passed through if smaller. Screens are machines with screening surfaces used to classify materials by size. The screening surface is the medium containing the apertures for the passage of the undersize material. Screens are put to many uses - size separation, dewatering, desliming, media recovery, scalping, trash removal, washing, dedusting, conveying, concentration, and many combinations of these functions. The oil shales located in the Appalachian Basin cover an eight-state area of the eastern U. S., and are referred to as Devonian (black) shales. These shales have been exploited for their gas potential for several years. The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) has conducted research since 1972 on the production of shale oil from the Devonian shales, and this resulted in the development of the HYTORT process. This process demonstrated that the yield from the Eastern oil shales can be greater than the value indicated by the Fischer assay method. IGT estimates that 423 billion barrels (67.3 x 109 m3) of oil could be recoverd by HYTORT processing of surface-minable eastern U. S. shales. Recently American Syncrude Corporation and Southern Pacific Petroleum N. L. have proposed oil shale projects in Kentucky. This paper will describe the surface mining and retorting techniques that have been studied for exploitation of the Devonian shales, and enumerate the problems that have to be overcome before commercial production can be realized from these shales.

Recovery of uranium from wet-process phosphoric acid is a newly developed source of uranium. Many processes have been developed but the OPAP (octylphenyl acid phosphate) process is still the valuable one because the OPAP reagent compound has the high extraction ,power and cheap cost. The OPAP process was already studied by murthy(1) in 1970 and its complete process flow sheet was first fulfilled by F.T. Hurst(2) in 1974. WCFC(3) (western Co-op Fertilizer Ltd.) in cooperation with ESI (Earth Science Inc.) set up the OPAP uranium recovery pilot plant in Canada in 1978. We have studied the OPAP process since 1974 and first improved the OPAP extractant by proper adjustment of the DOPAP/MOPAP mole ratio with CH3OH-H20 method, resulting in shortening the phase separation time and avoiding the precipitation occurrence in our process. Second, we utilize the reduction and oxidation occurring by DC power supply on either side of the membrane to achieve the extraction and stripping at the same time. An improved OPAP process in which high recovery yield of uranium and acid uncontaminated by iron has been developed in our laboratory.

The concept of initiating a large action-oriented contract, directed toward inherently safe mining systems, was conceived by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in January 1970. At that time we were in the process of establishing research contracts and grants, about 100 of which were let in FY 71 to deal individually with fairly specific technological areas. These projects in the aggregate covered a wide spectrum of health and safety problems. What appeared to be necessary was the creation of a project or program that would provide a focal point for the demonstration of many of the results of this research and also in the action sense culminate with working hardware and systems that could be tested and demonstrated over a fairly long teen. The concept of working demonstrable systems, rather than just a conceptual study, was, felt to be necessary for two significant reasons. In the development of any new system, the translation from concept to working hardware is usually a costly and time consuming process which acts as a deterrent to implementation. Secondly, many decisions in the mining community to change equipment or systems ,are based on first hand observation of the new system, in operational practice, an attitude which is certainly understandable in view of the high capital costs of equipment. The basic goal of this investigation was to determine the degree of drying of high moisture lignite through the use of high temperature and pressure steam autoclaves. Specific items studied were: a) the effect of lignite particle size, b) steam temperature and pressure required, and c) the time of ahydration. Although removal of sodium, ash, sulfur and other ash-forming minerals was not the goal of this study, basic analysis of effluent water showed organic material and alkalai metal content. Removal of inherent moisture from run-of-mine lignite was tested by lock-feeding the lignite, which was previously sized by screening into 25 kg autoclaves. High pressure, up to 4.053 MPa (588 psi), saturated steam was then introduced into the pressure reactor. Reaction time, pressure, temperature, and depressurization rates were strictly controlled for each reactor test run. Results indicate that about 80% of lignite total moisture was removed, including some of the inherent moisture, yielding a non-oxidized, and thus stable, lignite product. As stated, a side benefit occurred as some reduction of non-combustible portions of the lignite also took place. The conclusion reached as a result of the tests is that the steam-drying process can be successfully applied to reducing moisture in lignite, and may be considered for additional studies on acceleration of the coalification process. On the basis of the data presented, the author believes that lignite can be economically upgraded in steam autoclaves by simultaneously reducing the moisture content by 80 percent and the sulfur content by at least 50 percent. Upgrading the lignite by this method will result in large energy and financial savings.

Microscopic evaluation of trace quantities of metalliferous phases in flotation products requires counting large numbers of particles. Particle counts of many thousands may be required for precision, but not obtained practically by conventional microscopic techniques. A less tedious microscopic method for evaluating trace sulfides in mill tailings was developed for the O'okiep Mining Company in South Africa. Hundreds of thousands of particles were evaluated by this method called "gross-counting." Gross-counting consists of counting microscopic fields rather than point-counting individual particles. Total counts are calculated by multiplying the average number of particles per field by the total number of fields examined over the entire mount. Total gross-counts range from about 20,000 particles for +200 to 100,000 or more for -400 mesh size material in lucite mounts. Sulfides and metallic particles in each field are identified and tallied along with field counts. Totals for each type of metallic particle are divided by the total gross-count to give volume percent which is corrected to weight percent by specific gravity factors.

Traditionally Australia has been a leader in underground mining methods with world standards being established at Mount Isa, Broken Hill, Kalgoorlie, and Mount Lyell. With decline in higher-grade reserves and discovery of a multitude of near-surface oxide gold de-posits attention has shifted to bulk mining of low-grade gold ores by open pit methods, heap leaching and activated carbon recovery of gold values. The paper examines historical change in mining philosophy and the economic effects of isolation.

White Pine Copper Company, a subsidiary of Copper Range Company located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, mines a Precambrian sedimentary deposit containing finely disseminated chalcocite, native cop- per and native silver. Silver occurs predominately in certain strata and presently provides a mill head averaging 0.25 ounces per ton. This technical publication traces the development of silver recovery at White Fine beginning in early 1961. White Pine refined copper contains an excess of silver over and above that required to impart Lake Copper properties. The copper does not require electrolytic refining to meet industry purity requirements, nor is there sufficient silver to justify electrolysis.
