The complex mineralogy of the Porgera resource has a pronounced effect on process selection for the recovery of refractory gold and silver. Intimate association of gold with pyrite necessitates a high degree of sulphur preoxidation in order to achieve acceptable levels of gold recovery. Acid pressure oxidation has been demonstrated to be the only commercially proven process capable of achieving the required level of pyrite oxidation. Gangue mineralization dictates preconcentration of the sulphides to limit the acid consuming capacity and carbon dioxide generation during oxidation. However, the relationship between concentrate sulphur grade and gold recovery to concentrate ultimately governs the optimum degree of sulphide preconcentration.

The first of a series on the evaluation of rock cutting tools, this paper discusses the results of full-scale laboratory drilling tests that compare the performances of several polycrystalline diamond cutter (PDC) coring bits. The tests were performed in welded tuff as part of a site characterization program. Number of cutters, size of cutters, air course design, and other parameters were evaluated as they affect penetration rate, but this paper focuses mainly on the relationships of torque vs. thrust (weight-on-bit), specific energy vs. penetration rate, and thrust vs. penetration rate. These relationships change in diagnostic ways according to bit type, bit condition, and type of welded tuff.

With the dramatic increase in world demand for basic raw materials, open pit mining is proceeding at an unprecedented rate. A viable demand is the ever tempting Siren's song for increased production or new facilities. When the Siren's lure is viewed against the panorama of today's world economic milieu the concomitant Scylla and Charybdis are seen in the form of high capital cost and high operating cost. If the economic realities of present day open pit mining are to show a proper return on investment, a clear and penetrating eye must be cast upon the area of mine planning. This paper deals with the problem of overburden removal. In almost every open pit mining operation overburden removal is a significant part of the capital cost and operating cost of the total operation. This paper deals with a new and unique method to affect economical overburden removal. Well known to all are the parameters surrounding draglines, shovels, and bucket wheel excavators. All of these machines require a reasonably stable soil to support them and the shovel and bucket wheel excavator require a reasonably stable bank in which to operate. Their reliability, portability and rate of production per dollar of invested capital are good.

"On April 4, 2017, the largest earth-pressure-balance tunnel boring machine (TBM) ever built finally completed its 2.7-km (1.7-mile) journey beneath Seattle, WA, nearly four years after it began boring the SR-99 tunnel that will eventually replace Seattle’s Alaskan Way Viaduct.By now, readers of this publication are familiar with the ordeal that began on Dec. 6, 2016, when the machine overheated and shut down. Until that point, the TBM, named Bertha, had grabbed headlines for being the largest in the world with a 17-m (57.6-ft) diameter face. But after the incident that stopped the progress, the headlines suddenly stopped focusing on the engineering marvel of the tunnel project and began asking what went wrong. Just 300 m (1,000 ft) into the tunneling journey the machine was stuck, unable to move forward and impossible to retract.The project’s contractors, Seattle Tunnel Partners,(STP JV) – a design-build consortium comprised of Dragados - USA, Tutor Perini, say a 20-cm (8-in.) steel well-casing buried in the path of the machine caused the problems that halted the TBM. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) disagrees, and the issue over who ultimately pays for the repairs is now with the courts.Eventually, engineers determined the best way to get Bertha back to work was to dig a 36-m (120-ft), deep concrete lined shaft pit in front of the machine and lift the 1.8-kt (2,000-st) cutterhead out for repairs. The repairs took two years but eventually the machine resumed mining in January 2016. In April 2017, the TBM finished building the tunnel, breaking through at the tunnel’s north end near Seattle’s Space Needle, with little to no ground surface movement measured on the entire alignment.While the cause of the TBM breakdown and who should pay for repairs was debated above ground, the work below ground continued. David Sowers, deputy program administrator, engineering and program management with WSDOT, told Mining Engineering during the 2017 Cutting Edge Conference in Seattle that in addition to the technical marvel that the tunnel became, the fact the parties involved were able to work through the unprecedented challenge is a great example of how to overcome challenges on massive projects."

The present fuel situation indicates that, at least for the next 20 to 30 years, the burning of coal will be a main source of energy. All coal contains sulfur, which is converted to sulfur dioxide during combustion. The concentration of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in the resulting flue gas, for most coals, would exceed the limits established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Therefore, the sulfur must either be removed from the coal prior to its burning, or be collected from the stack gas before it reaches the atmosphere. There is currently a large amount of research devoted to methods of removing the sulfur from the coal before burning, or during combustion in fluidized beds with materials which trap the sulfur in the solid residue. The commercialization of these processes, however, is not expected in the near future. Flue gas desulfurization appears to be the best near term prospect of fulfilling current air quality control regulations. The lime/limestone wet-scrubbing methods are the most advanced flue gas desulfurization processes and will account for the majority of sulfur removal systems in electric power generation. There are currently at least 23 full-scale systems existing or under construction and 17 of these will use the lime or limestone wet-scrubbing process. (1)

We in the coal industry, especially in the State of Illinois, put tremendous emphasis, including time, money and effort, into on-the-job training. The results of such training and safety have been tremendous. For example, in 1981 Illinois was the first major coal producing state in the history of coal mining to have zero mine-related fatalities. And in 1985, I am very proud to say, we had the second best record in the history of coal mining, with only two fatalities. Obviously, one fatality is one too many. Our goal is, has been and will continue to be to strive for excellence. It is sad, however, that in 1981 while were were celebrating zero fatalities in the workplace, there were 21 fatalities that occurred off the job. Thus, it has become a classic American story. Success with safety has been found in the workplace, but training and preparation to prevent accidents away from the job site have almost been ignored. Accidents are the leading causes of death in the United States for all persons age 1 thru 38, and are the fourth leading cause of death for people of all ages. Every single day, on the average, more than 290 Americans are killed in accidents - a rate of one every five minutes. The leading cause of fatal accidents in the U.S. is motor vehicles. And the number two cause is home accidents. A staggering statistic is that people are being killed off the job at a rate of about 9 to 1 over those on the job.

Substantial priming was a considered necessity for proper initiation of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixes as ANFO began to carve its niche in the mining industry in the latter fifties. Heavy priming accompanied the introduction of prills and oil to many blasting operations, large charges of high explosives were commonly used at the bottom, top and frequent intervals through-out the column. As the quality of ammonium nitrate improved and operators became more experienced, primer costs began to diminish. Increased experimentation continued with reduced primer costs a main objective. Cast primers were introduced and became accepted as an excellent companion for ANFO. Although the trend toward larger diameter boreholes became increasingly popular, emphasis on lower and lower priming costs continued. A primer was simply required to produce any type of initiation within the ANFO column to be considered adequate. Suddenly ANFO priming had digressed from excessive to marginal. Early experimental data developed at "test site" and laboratory locations indicated that ANFO had a tendency to react inefficiently in the initiation region of the column unless substantially primed. This was evidenced by the presence of unstable reaction rates detected with newly developed detonation velocity measuring equipment. "In early 2014, Nicholson Construction Company was awarded, together with its tunneling sister company Bessac, the Norris Cut Miami Tunnel Project. The 2.5-meters diameter segmental lined tunnel, 1600-meters long, is aimed to replace the existing 54” force main connecting the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WTP) on Virginia Key to Fisher Island. To overcome project challenges such as the highly permeable limestone of the Fort Thomson Karstic Formation (one of the most permeable formation in the World), the project team has developed State of the Art solutions: The TBM was launched with pipe-jacking technique for the first 70-meters and then converted to segment erection mode. It allows substantial schedule savings and drastically reduces the size of the circular launching shaft. The TBM, jointly designed and manufactured by Bessac and Herrenknecht, can convert from slurry to EPB mode within a few minutes. The cutters can be replaced by wet divers thanks to an innovative application in the TBM industry. PRESENTATION OF THE PROJECT The aim of this project is to replace the existing 54-inch force main pipeline which transmitted all sewage collected from Miami Beach, Surfside, Bal Harbour, Bay Harbor, North Bay Village and Fisher Island to the Central District Wastewater Treatment Plant (CDWWTP) to Fisher Island. The existing pipeline consisted of pre-stressed concrete cylinder pipe which is in poor condition in a number of locations and could be subject to sudden failure. An adjacent portion of this existing force main under the Government Cut (North Fisher Island) has already been replaced as part of a previous design-build contract and involved the installation of a 60-inch diameter fiberglass-reinforced mortar pipe installed inside a micro-tunneled casing."

Most of the aluminum produced in the United States today is derived from foreign bauxite deposits. Earth Sciences, Inc. initiated a program to evaluate domestic non-bauxite sources for alumina in the 1960's. In the initial evaluation of alunite, domestic resources were not sufficient to support development. An exploration program led to the discovery of large deposits of alunite in Utah and several other western states. Identification of alunite is difficult as both its physical and chemical characteristics are similar to the minerals with which it is associated. Most of the significant alunite deposits in the western United States are replacement type deposits. These deposits have formed as a result of hydrothermal alteration of volcanic, sub-volcanic, and igneous rocks. Typical alunite deposits contain between 30% and 50% alunite between 50% and 70% quartz with minor amounts of other minerals. Four mineralogical zones are common in these systems. They include a siliceous zone, a quartz-alunite zone, a kaolinite zone and a chlorite-montmorillonite zone. Total U.S. reserves of alunite were estimated at 20 million metric tons (at 30% alunite) by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1941. Here recent work by the U.S. Geological Survey estimates reserves of 252 million metric tons and potential resources at 1.4 billion metric tons. Reserves and resources estimated for 23 properties on which field work has been done by ESI are considerably higher. Most of these properties have reserves and potential resources of several hundred million metric tons. The combined demonstrated reserves at these properties are estimated to be about 650 million metric tons. Inferred reserves are estimated at 2.5 billion metric tons and potential resources at 8 billion metric tons. It appears that the U.S. has sufficient reserves and resources for alunite to be considered as a potential non-bauxite source of alumina.

American Girl Mine is located in the Cargo Muchacho Mountains in the southeastern Imperial Valley of Southern California. Production from the current open pit mine and heap leach recovery system began in early 1989. Previous mining and gold recovery took place commencing in 1987 at the Padre Madre site, situated adjacent to the American Girl site to the southwest. In mid-1990, a 790-tonne-per-day underground gold mine and mill went into production. Approximately 6,500 troy ounces of gold per month are recovered from the combined open pit underground mine operation. Copper in the form of Azurite [Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2] and Malachite [Cu2CO3(OH)2] are abundant in the mined ores (Henshaw, 1942). The high solubility of these minerals in caustic cyanide solutions has a negative impact on carbon adsorption and electrowin processes. This paper presents the results of monitoring programs, process chemistry, and control changes introduced at American Girl Mine to abate production complications in the refinery and measures taken to minimize solution gold losses in the adsorption circuit(s).

This paper presents a methodology for long-range studies of petroleum supply, to meet projected demands, that involves modifications of procedures used previously. This paper continues a series of papers on this general topic in the AIME, the most elaborate recent one being that by Warren Davis given in February 1958. The procedures considered here begin with the assumption that the governmental framework of regulations and taxes remains fixed- but that price changes. After .these procedures have been reviewed, the effects of changing certain governmental controls, will be considered in order to judge their potential effects on future supply. This is an essential step because controls cannot be expected to' remain static in a situation changing as much as the petroleum. industry and because such changes are within-the scope of alternative ways of adjusting to impending problems. The first procedure begins with: a) trends in drilling success, b) relation between field income from oil and gas and footage drilled, c) declines in capacity from production, d) trends in capacity of new and producing wells, e) all monetary values are in constant 1958 dollars, and f) target amounts of domestic crude petroleum production. 'From these components projections are obtained of: 1) numbers of future producing wells required, 2) footage drilled, 3) new wells drilled, 4) crude oil found, 5) capacity of producing wells, 6) completion costs, 7) finding costs, 8) production costs, and 9) average wellhead crude oil price consistent with the footage-field income relationship.

The Waneta Expansion Project (WAX) is located near the existing Waneta Dam site at the confluence of the Pend d?Oreille and Columbia rivers, approximately 10 km (6.2 miles) south of Trail, BC, Canada. The WAX owners consist of a partnership between Fortis Inc., Columbia Basin Trust and the Columbia Power Corp. This design-build project was awarded to SNC-Lavalin in late 2010 and is expected to be operational in mid-2015. The WAX consists of a new 335-MW powerhouse, including two new Francis turbine units, each generating approximately 167 MW. The powerhouse is located downstream of the existing Waneta Dam, and will make use of excess water that would otherwise be spilled during the runoff season. Water will be funneled to the turbines through an intake structure and two 10.5- m (34.5-ft) diameter, concrete-lined Penstock Tunnels. A 10-km (6.2-mile) transmission line will connect the powerhouse to existing electrical grids. Redpath/FKCI Waneta Tunnelers (RFK) was subcontracted by the heavy civil contractor, the Aecon/SNC Lavalin (ASL) joint venture, to excavate the two penstock tunnels and install the cast-in-place concrete liner. RFK is a joint venture partnership between J.S. Redpath Ltd., an underground mine contractor located in North Bay, Ontario, and Frontier-Kemper Constructors ULC, a heavy civil tunneling contractor based in Nova Scotia, Canada. Since penstock tunnel excavation was planned using drill-and-blast methods with a significant grade of more than 17 percent, the combined experience of these two contractors was a perfect match.

Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) is the most refractory copper mineral when treated in conventional sulfate media leaching systems. This is the first study to examine the use of a dimethyl sulfoxide (CH3SOCH3, DMSO) solution containing copper chloride (CuCl2) for the leaching of chalcopyrite. Leaching experiments for a copper concentrate composed mainly of chalcopyrite were conducted at ambient pressure at 313–413 K. The leaching fractions of Cu, Fe, S, Au, and As were investigated. It was found that 90% of the Cu was extracted in 2 h, and 94% was extracted in 4 h at 373 K, which is competitive with other conventional processes. A DMSO solution containing CuCl2 could selectively dissolve the valuable metals Cu and Au from chalcopyrite, but leave minerals with little economic value such as pyrite (FeS2) and As in the residue. Chalcopyrite is oxidized by cupric ion in proportion to the stoichiometric ratio of Cu in the concentrate to the initial cupric ion in the DMSO solution, which is enhanced by the presence of oxygen below 373 K.

Arch Coal Inc. has implemented and sustained Best Practices at its four western mines through utilizing foremen in ongoing time studies. A prime benefit is the unique opportunity provided to front line supervisors. To date, 48 supervisors have participated in this program. Each quarter a new team is assembled with members from each operation. During three month blocks the supervisors conduct studies at each mine and identify best practices to implement at their own mine. Ongoing Best Practice and Action Item lists are reviewed each study. Mine management edits, prioritizes and monitors the completion of the proposed action items.

In today’s challenging mining environment, everyone is focused on minimizing cost per ton. With haulage costs approaching up to 45% of the overall mining costs, and loader performance driving production, optimizing payload on the truck is a big opportunity. This paper will focus on technology’s role in loaders achieving the truck target payload. There are constantly new innovations in technology, but not everyone uses them correctly. Technology is intended to help achieve the next level of performance, but still requires the right people and processes to effectively utilize the benefits. In today’s mining business, miners, engineers, trainers, supervisors, and managers have ever increasing roles and responsibilities as never seen before in past decades. Technology can make these roles more efficient, but fully relying on the technology can detract from optimization. Sometimes the old-fashioned method of loading to a consistent pass match will provide a lower cost per ton. Before blindly trusting your technology feedback, know these three areas discussed in this paper: (1) Prerequisites to utilize technology in payload management; (2) Types of payload management technology; (3) How to use the data to manage operator behavior. The objective of this paper is to provide low-cost recommendations to efficiently increase production. INTRODUCTION Whether miners claim to have been around and experienced it all, or they are the data-driven new generation on the mine site, miners are expected to execute the mine plan at the lowest cost possible. So why is it so difficult to execute this task? Shouldn’t supervisors just have to staff the equipment, tell operators to have a safe day and tally up the numbers at the end of the shift? Let the technology system do the rest; what could go wrong? Lots. Having examined numerous mining operations that use the latest loading technologies over the past several years, one common denominator is the opportunity to improve loader operator performance. Mining companies seek help from consultants, training departments, performance reporting systems and an arsenal of resources. Armed with all this information, but the improvements don’t happen, what could have gone wrong? It comes down to people, not managing the resources to drive the right behavior and as a result, the mine’s performance is not where it should be. Understanding how to make “Great Miners” out of these people is critical to this constant struggle to move more with less and get the costs down. Extraction CPT (Cost-Per-Ton) is most sensitive to optimizing loader production which can be generalized into 3 categories of influence: machine specifications, cycle timing, and continuous management using technology. After establishing a basic production machine configuration, utilizing technology to manage cycle times, operator efficiency and payload can be advantageous. Prerequisites to Utilize Payload Management Technology It is important to begin with the primary considerations that enable the use of technology to continuously manage loading productivity. All systems are interdependent in mining, but these are divided into the simplest terms to remember. First, fix your timing and geometry.

INTRODUCTION Rapidly increasing capacities of equipment used to load and handle material at the face require improved haulage equipment and better methods of transporting the mined materials or "muck" to the shaft or slope and out of the mine to the processing plant on the surface. Increasingly, those transportation demands are being satisfied with underground belt conveyors. Such con¬veyors provide the most readily available, most efficient, and most reliable method of carrying materials in a continuous and rapid flow from the face loading equip¬ment to the surface plant. Almost universally, belt con¬veyors are used in coal mines and those nonmetallic and metallic mines operating in relatively flat bedded deposits. Belt conveyors are available in a wide range of capacities, mainly limited by belt width, belt speed, and weight of the material to be transported. They can be used on the level, on grades, on the surface, or under¬ground. They provide a rapid and constant flow of material, transporting the material as quickly as it is mined. Length of belt conveyors is almost unlimited. Where the haulage distance exceeds the practical capacity of a single conveyor unit, two or more conveyors can be used in series. Single conveyors more than 1.6 km (1.0 mile) long are common; multiple-unit conveyors in series operation are transporting materials over distances exceeding 16.1 km (10 miles). Depending upon mate¬rials being transported, job conditions, cost of the terrain being spanned, and alternative haulage methods avail¬able, conveyors can be conceivably economical for even greater distances. Table 1 lists maximum belt speeds recommended for most materials, relating belt speeds to belt widths. Table 2 lists capacities of typical conveyors of various widths and speeds, transporting commonly mined mate¬rials of various weights. ADVANTAGES OF CONVEYOR SYSTEMS For several years after their initial introduction, belt conveyors were available only with rigid side frames or a supporting structure of steel and concrete. That con¬struction limited underground applications, due to the cost and relative inconvenience of extending or retract¬ing the belt conveyor in the confined underground environment. However, during the last 20 years, wire-¬rope side-frame belt conveyors, as shown in Fig. 1, have become widely used in underground applications. Even wider use can be anticipated with their application to the fast movement of materials in surface mining operations. Advantages of the wire-rope side-frame belt con¬veyors were realized first in panel or section belt haulage in coal mines. Soon afterward, use of those conveyors was extended to gathering and main-line haulage. The mobility of the wire-rope side-frame conveyor is the principal reason for its success. The conveyor can be extended, retracted, dismantled, moved, and reassembled easily, even in relatively confined under¬ground spaces. The intermediate structure consists of rope support stands, wire-rope side frames, wire-rope tie-off stands, and the necessary carrying idlers and return idlers. An important and very attractive feature is the ability to suspend the conveyor from the roof in an underground mine, as shown in Fig. 2, leaving more room for improved housekeeping and allowing passage of face-service equipment, haulage vehicles, and other mining equipment. The conveyor's open construction allows quick and easy visual inspection of its com¬ponents for failures or malfunctions; it also facilitates checking and correcting conveyor-belt alignment. Other advantages contributing to the attractiveness and widespread application of wire-rope side-frame conveyors in main-line, slope, and surface installations include: lower capital costs, lower installation costs, lower maintenance costs, reduced impact on idlers and belting, reduced spillage and minimal cleanup, improved conformation to undulating terrain or mine bottoms, and the ability to span most obstacles without heavy structural support. CONVEYOR CLASSIFICATIONS Underground belt conveyors are classified normally according to their function. Generally, conveyors are classified into one of four main categories: 1) Panel or section conveyors normally receive the material to be transported directly from the face-haulage equipment. 2) Gathering conveyors are secondary haulage units that usually receive material from two or more panel conveyors. 3) Main-line conveyors transport all the material mined in the underground operations to the slope or shaft. Normally, they receive the material from two or more gathering conveyors. 4) Slope conveyors generally operate in tandem with the main-line conveyor, providing continuous Table 1. 1, Introduction Location Kalengwa mine is located in the North Western Province of Zambia, 402 kilometre by unpaved road to the west of Kitwe, which is roughly in the centre of the Zambian Copperbelt, well known as one of the world's centres of copper mining. Its position is illustrated on the map of Africa in Figure 1 and on the map of Zambia in Figure 2. It is a mine of Roan Consolidated Mines Limited whose other properties, Mufulira, Luanshya, Chambishi and Chibuluma Mines, are all located on the Copperbelt. It is managed by the Chibuluma Division of the company. The rate of production from Kalengwa will vary from 12 000 to 17 000 tonnes of saleable copper a year over the next six years. Kalengwa did not exist as a place until the first prospecting parties and later the mine became established and the early working population was recruited entirely from small villages in the surrounding area as much as thirty miles away. The mining area consists of fourteen mining locations amounting to 3.35 square kilometres and the land may be used for any purpose connected with mining, including housing, wood cutting and other utilities. The whole area is, except for minor undulations, a fairly flat plateau with main rivers running from north to south and flood basins known as "dambos" located in a general east west direction. Vegetation is, with the exception of the grassy dambos, temperate forest with relatively light undergrowth. Game of great variety is prolific, as is the associated tsetse fly.

The underground mine produces approximately 1.5 to 1.8 million tons a year and approximately 400,000 ounces of gold a year. The mine is comprised of two main mining methods, underhand drift and fill and long hole stopeing. The mass blast project stated in 2012 as Value in Use project between Barrick, Southwest Energy and Orica, the goal of this project is to be able to blast an entire drilled stope in one blasting event instead of taking multiple blasts. This will improve productivity by eliminating intermediate blasts, reducing additional blast time, eliminate drill hole cleaning due to the previous blast. Project implantation started in the fourth quarter of 2013 and mass blasting has been common practice throughout all of 2014. STOPPING PRACTICE AT GOLDSTRIKE BEFORE MASS BLAST PROJECT The production from the Goldstrike mine is approximately 70% from stopes. The timely completion of all stoping blocks is imperative to maintaining the plan, delays in the execution of any particular block can have detrimental ripple down effects as neighbouring stoping blocks become delayed. Before the implementation of this project the standard practice for Goldstrike was to: 1. Drill the entire stope 2. Blast a bottom shot, normally between 10 feet and 20 feet off the bottom of the slot rings. This would be mucked out before the next shot 3. Blast a pull through shot, this included the raise and one or two production rings. Again mucking this out before the next shot 4. Blast production rings, one or two more blasts depending on stope size. In most cases between each of these blasts the holes in the other rings of the stope would have to be cleaned. This meant either cleaning manually using air and water, or mechanically cleaning with a bench drill. In many cases this resulted in delays in completing the stoping block."
