Characterization and beneficiation of dry iron ore processing plant reject fines of Khondbond region, India, was investigated. Different characterization techniques viz. size analysis, size-wise chemical and density analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, sinkfloat analysis, thermo gravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and QEMSCAN were carried out. Based on characterization results, two process flow sheets comprising wet screening followed by conventional gravity concentration and two stage classification with different beneficiation routes were used to recover the iron values from reject fines containing 58.73% Fe, 5.54% Al2O3, and 6.6% SiO2. Finally, suggested flow sheet comprising of two stage classification and advance gravity concentration followed by the combination of grinding, classification, and froth flotation produced iron concentrate of 2.36% Al2O3 with 75.8% yield which can be used in sinter/pellet making.

The potential of the coal reserves in the western United States for meeting future energy needs has been recognized for quite some time. However, two of the major constraints which have tended to limit the development of these reserves which can only be deep-mined are the great thicknesses of the coal seams encountered and their high pitch. Although new mining methods may need to be developed to recover these reserves, at least in the short- term the industry has to incorporate presently available equipment which were not originally designed for thick-seam mining. The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of the various equipment that are in use today and their possible application to thick-seam mining. The paper also addresses the various ground control and safety considerations that are unique to thick-seam extraction.

The 1987 recovery in the US mining industry permitted modest increases in exploration expenditures that year (Fig. 1). Favorable market conditions apparently allowed the gains to be sus¬tained in 1988. There was great uncer¬tainty early in the year as to whether world and US economic growth would be a casualty of the October 1987 worldwide stock market crash. By nearly all measures, the performance of the US minerals industry was strong¬. A weak US dollar and the strong growth of worldwide capital spending resulted in in¬creased US exports of con¬sumer and producer durable items as well as strong domes¬tic demand for metals. In fact, 1988 US steel industry exports reached levels not attained since the mid-1970s. It was re¬ported that steel industry labor productivity is now roughly twice the 1981 level. Among metals with signifi¬cant average nominal price increases in 1988 over 1987 levels were copper (43%), alu¬minum (52%0), and zinc (44%). Even though domestic copper production has grown since 1984 by 30% in mining and 24% in refining, em¬ployment in mining and milling is 4% below the 1984 level. Domestic unit costs are reported in the range of $1.10 to $1.33/kg (50 to 60 cents per lb). The US base metals industry is proba¬bly in its best cash position in many years. However, there has not been a large increase in exploration expendi¬tures. This is due mostly to the percep¬tion that worldwide capacity can easily be increased. Industry reports do show that "low cost" copper producers have been buying reserves from weaker com¬panies. The 1987 Society of Economic Ge¬ologists (SEG) survey of exploration activity indicated that 95 cents out of every exploration dollar spent by US and Canadian firms was for base and precious metals (Economic Geology, January 1989). Press reports, though, make it clear that most of that spending was targeted for precious metals. US claim staking data (Fig. 2) rein¬forces this suspicion. The apparent lag in new claim filings in Alaska and phe¬nomenal growth in filings in the lower 48 states suggests that exploration is directed at relatively low risk targets. In the conterminous 48, more than 40% of the new claims were made in Nevada, indicating an emphasis on gold (although even Nevada had some base metals exploration). Even with a price decline during 1988, the difference between the gold price and average global "cash" production cost of $7.30/g ($227 per oz) still leaves room for an attractive return (Northern Miner, 1988). Exploration plans and results Metals Economics Group (Halifax) indicated in its 1988 exploration survey that exploration expenditures by US and South African firms would be at about 1987 levels. It also reported that Canadian and Australian firms were ex¬pected to reduce their exploration spend¬ing significantly. Firms in both coun¬tries were caught in changes in tax laws. In Canada, the Mining Ex¬ploration Depletion Allow¬ance (MEDA) once permitted generous tax write-offs to in¬dividuals investing in miner¬als exploration. It was to be replaced in January 1989 with the Canadian Exploration In¬centives Program (CEIP). Although structured and ad¬ministered differently than MEDA, CEIP can provide an equivalent or possibly greater financial incentive for min¬eral exploration, for junior mining companies. In 1987, it is estimated that junior com¬panies accounted for two¬-thirds of the off-property (or grass roots) exploration ex¬penditures in Canada. Australia will revoke the tax exemption for gold in 1990. Australian operators, therfore, were expected to concentrate efforts on speeding up pro¬duction during 1988 and 1989. In 1988, Chile and Mali announced special efforts to attract gold explora¬tion by foreign companies. The Cana¬dian government continues to express concern about the write-off (and drawdown) of base metal reserves. I gratefully acknowledge the help of a number of American and Canadian geologists, in both federal surveys and in private firms, who took the time to discuss this problem with me. Hans Landsberg and Bruce Netschert also followed the study with interest and encouragement. In their 1961 monograph, THE FUTURE SUPPLY OF THE MAJOR METALS, Bruce Netschert and Hans Landsberg noted that identified potential resources (that is, known but submarginal resources) of lead and zinc were much lower relative to reserves (that is, known and supermarginal resources) than was the same ratio for other metals.1/ Put another way, it seemed that for such metals as iron, manganese, copper, and aluminum, slightly more favorable economic conditions or modest advances in technology would greatly increase reserves by permitting the exploitation of vest quantities of leaner or deeper or otherwise less valuable mineral deposits. But for lead and zinc, Netschert and Landsberg concluded that either: "(1) there is relatively little material below present cutoff grades; [or] (2) such material exists, but for some reason there are no data.? 2/ This situation, which they called "the lead-zinc anomaly" has been subsequently discussed by other authors. The purpose of this paper is to carry the discussion further by examining the evidence in favor of (1) and (2) and by advancing a third alternative.

Metallurgical processes involving the use of cyanide such as gold cyanidation, metal plating and flotation, generate effluents containing cyanide and cyanide in complex combinations with heavy metals in quantities exceeding those regarded as being safe for discharge into streams. A new process for destruction of free and complexed cyanide and related-species in wastewaters has been developed at the Inco research laboratories using sulfur dioxide, air and lime. High reaction rates are obtained in the presence of a small amount of copper which acts as a catalyst. Cyanide species can be reduced to as low as 0.1 mg/L in a very short treatment time. Examples of treatment of gold mill effluents and barren slurries, plating rinse waters and flotation liquors or tailing slurries are given.

"A carefully planned laboratory test program is the foundation for the successful development of a sulfide flotation process. In this paper, the development of a copper-molybdenum flotation process is described. However, the concepts discussed can be applied to most sulfide flotation systems and to many industrial minerals projects as well. Each step is examined, beginning with sample procurement and covering sample preparation, flotation test preparation grinding, scoping flotation tests for reagent scheme selection, rougher flotation parameter evaluation and cleaner circuit evaluation, through to locked-cycle testing and pilot plant design and operation. Ore variability and modeling to determine the response of various ore types to the optimum conditions established is also examined.IntroductionA carefully planned laboratory test program is essential for the successful development of any sulfide flotation process. These programs usually begin with a series of batch tests on several ore type composites to evaluate appropriate reagent schemes and delineate optimum rougher flotation conditions, such as primary grind size, flotation pulp density, flotation pulp pH and retention time. Cleaner parameters such as regrind size requirements, cleaner pH, pulp density and number of stages are then defined. Semicontinuous locked-cycle tests are performed using the parameters established in the batch tests to determine the effect of middling streams recirculation on flotation performance. The data generated and the experience gained in the locked-cycle tests may be used to design and operate a continuous pilot plant if relatively large amounts of concentrate are required for further process development, such as optimization of byproduct molybdenum production from bulk copper-molybdenum concentrate.A comprehensive ore variability program is undertaken to determine the response of various ore types to the optimum conditions established. These ore variability programs often test hundreds of samples in standardized batch rougher and cleaner tests to ensure that the orebody is well understood.This article describes the development of a copper-molybdenum flotation process, but the concepts discussed can be applied to most sulfide flotation systems and many industrial minerals projects. The block flow diagram in Fig. 1 provides an overview of the development process."

The definition and shortcomings of traditional cutoff grades are discussed. The concept of optimum cutoff grade policy which maximizes the Net Present Value (NPV) of annual cash flows coming from a mining project is introduced within the basic framework outlined by K. F. Lane. Several examples are used to demonstrate the shortfalls of cutoff grade policies obtained by various heuristic optimization techniques. An algorithm to obtain an optimum cutoff grade policy which maximizes the NPV of a project is given and described in detail.

Minnesota contains a major low- grade copper-nickel sulfide resource within the Duluth Gabbro Complex. Several companies have actively explored this resource. Open pit mining would be required to develop portions of the resource, and as a result, large quantities of sulfide-bearing lean ore and waste rock would be stockpiled. Although the problems associated with high-sulfide tailings and acid mine drainage are well documented, the leaching characteristics of low-grade mineralized stockpiles must be understood for environmental impact assessment, siting, and planning. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and AMAX have cooperated in a research program to study leaching and revegetation -of test stock- piles, Six small (1600 'tons) stockpiles were constructed at the MINNAMAX Project Site and they range in composition from 0.29 to 043 g % copper, 0.075 to 0.09% nickel, and 0.6 to 1.45% sulfur. Two of the stockpiles were covered with mineral soil, one was covered with topsoil, and three were not treated Revegetation plots were established on the piles which received a soil cover. Leachate samples and flow measurements were collected at the base of the piles. Initial results indicate that metal concentrations in leachate samples range from 10 to 10,000 times the concentrations found in the streams of the area. During the first growing season, the test pile covered with topsoil yielded 30% less water than untreated test piles. No reduction in yield was observed for the piles that were covered with the less fertile mineral soil. First-year vegetative growth, expressed as biomass, was four times greater on the-topsoil pile than on the mineral soil piles. The long-term effects of vegetation on leachate quantity and quality continue to be investigated.

Literature is rather abundant on the topic of steady-state network analysis programs. Many versions exist, some of them have real extended facilities such as full graphical manipulation, fire simulation in motion, etc. These programs are certainly of great help to any ventilation planning and often assist the ventilation engineer in his operational decision making. However, what ever the efficiency of the calculation algorithms might be, their weak point still is the overall validity of the model. This numerical model, apart from maybe the questionable application of some physical laws, depends directly on the quality of the data used to identify its most influencing parameters such as the passive (resistance) or active (fan) characteristic of each of the branches in the network. Considering the non-linear character of the problem and the great number of variables involved, finding the closest numerical model of a real mine ventilation network is without any doubt a very difficult problem. This problem, often referred to as the parameter adjustment problem, is in almost every practical case solved on an experimental and "feeling" basis. Only a few papers put forward a mathematical solution based on a least square approach as the best fit criterion. The aim of this paper is to examine the possibility to apply the well-known simplex method to this problem. The performance of this method and its capability to reach the global optimum which corresponds to the best fit is discussed and compared to that of other methods.

Rapid growth in the rate of surface mining for coal has caused many states to increase the rigor and complexity of their surface mining codes. The promulgation of Federal surface mining standards may cause those states containing Federal land to amend their codes also. Presented is an up-to-date review of these codes with tabular summaries that divide the codes into operative functions. These summaries will be of use to new operators, multiple-state operators, and state officials. Suggestions are made for industrial efforts to present workable and acceptable amendments to these codes.

Rising demand, artificial market conditions, increased overseas competition, and a fluctuating international situation have brought ever increasing pressures to bear on the nonferrous metals industries, and particularly in the United States, Although capacity is being expanded by the construction of new plants and the development of new ore deposits, increasing attention is being focused on the possibilities of improving the performance of the existing installations and of getting the most out of the new equipment now installed. At first sight the task appears formidable. Based on raw materials which are nonhomogeneous, and possessing characteristics which are hard to quantify, even the processes by which the values in the ores are concentrated and extracted are in many cases not fully understood. The necessary analytical equipment and transducers demanded by these industries have also been slow in development and their earlier absence has hampered the application of modern control technology, This is reflected in plants which have been designed for ease of manual rather than automatic control, and in which the application of control techniques at first sight appears economically prohibitive. However, in any industry progress often comes only in small steps, It may be that by the wise choice of limited objectives and perhaps only partial solutions, substantial improvements in plant performance can be implemented now, and with only a modest investment. If modern control equipment is chosen of the type which can be reprogrammed, advantage can be taken later of more sophisticated solutions as the technology of the industry advances. This task of improving plant performance can and must be commenced even though our knowledge is incomplete. The experience of a related mineral consuming industry, with similar problems in the past, can be encouraging.

In the design of a modem mill, a stockpile storage system for raw and/or semi-processed ore has become almost indispensable. This paper discusses the benefits of such stockpile storage as well as the various types of belt conveyor stockpiling units available. Particular attention is given to large radial stackers since they offer the greatest flexibility. Stacker control systems and accessory equipment are briefly discussed. Various alternative reclaiming arrangements for stockpiles are reviewed and a discussion of the advantages and drawbacks of each arrangement is included.

As the 2016 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc., I am pleased to present the 2016 issue of the Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc., Vol. 340. A significant portion of the contribution that we make as a professional society is the publication of professional and technical papers that accelerate the advancement of scientific knowledge and enable the transfer of technology. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA, that resulted in the founding of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). Those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume fulfills that pledge. The 2016 Transactions contains some of the most interesting research and insights from the past year and features an international slate of authors spanning industry, academia and government. Papers include the latest findings from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and special-issue articles on process development testing. The 2016 Transactions consists of a total of 65 technical papers, encompassing all 21 papers published in 2016 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering (Vol. 68) and all 27 papers published in 2016 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 33). Additionally, this volume contains 17 papers that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All of the technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our publications staff. As the 2016 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.

A revised and expanded edition of a previous paper** dealing with reactions of calcium and magnesium oxides and hydroxides with pulverized coal fly ash is presented. Lime-fly ash specimens were cured at constant temperature and subjected to X-ray diffractometry, differential thermal analysis, pozzolanic reactivity tests, and microscopical investigations. Bars of limefly ash were subjected to cycles of wetting and drying, and measurements of length change were recorded. A discussion of variations within and among types of lime and types of fly ash is presented. The nature of the pozzolanic reaction is reviewed, particularly as related to compounds which are used up and formed during the aging process. The relationship between the pozzolanic reaction and the resultant physical properties of the mixtures is examined.

Washington State has a variety of industrial minerals and although not many are produced currently (1982) most have a history of production (table 1). The value of industrial minerals produced in the state exceeds by several times the production value of metallic minerals. In 1981, 15 minerals - cement, limestone, clay, gemstone, pumice, sand and gravel, stone, diatomite, gypsum, olivine, peat, talc, garnet, silica, and dolomite - were produced. Combined value of nonmetallic production for 1981 is estimated at $218,999,000. Cement had the largest estimated value at $102 million, followed by sand and gravel at $47 million, and crushed stone at $29 million. These figures are from the US. Bureau of Mines preliminary production figures for 1981.

A mathematical model is presented for the electrokinetic dewatering of suspensions of phosphatic clays. The modeling approach couples a boundary-element model for solution of Laplace?s equation to a recently developed constitutive equation that relates the change in solids content with applied electric field and time. The observation that the electric field controls both the maximum solids content achievable and the time required to reach that value is shown to severely constrain the application of electrokinetic dewatering strategies to an entire clay settling area. The approach, however, may be feasible for implementation as part of a continuous plant process.

Back in 1970 Congress passed the National Mining and Minerals policy Act, which had as one of its basic tenets to rely on a strong and stable private minerals industry for the development and production of our mineral resources. Since then, a substantial amount of legislation has been introduced that impacts on the minerals industry. Although most of the bills proposed are not passed into law, each bill affecting minerals and mining is given careful review by the Bureau of Mines. Comment is forwarded with the object of being helpful to legislators by providing our assessment of the probable impact of each bill proposed along with suggestions to improve them. Actually few bills introduced become law. For example, in the 93rd Congress 4,260 bills were introduced in the Senate and 17,690 in the House. In the final accounting there were passed 123 private laws and 649 public, 3 percent of the bills introduced. There would be little merit here in attempting to analyze each mineral-related bill that was proposed. Many are similar and aim at making a certain aspect of our minerals activity fit needs. So, to simplify the task the many bills have been grouped by subjects. Slide 1 shows the principal topics and the number of related bills introduced. Putting it altogether, there are 26 principal subjects and almost 200 bills. And these numbers are probably off somewhat, as this accounting was made early in December.

Three spatially separate porphyry copper/molybdenum deposits are associated with the Tertiary Needle Creek igneous center in the southern Absaroka Mountains, Wyoming. In all three deposits a central zone containing disseminated copper and molybdenum is surrounded by a halo of small, discontinuous base and precious metal veins. Propylitically and phyllically altered rocks are common in all three mineralized areas, and potassically altered rocks are locally present. Fission- track age data from apatite and zircon indicate that mineralization occurred about 32-40 m.y. ago. Limited data suggest that the lead isotopes are nonradiogenic, similar to porphyry copper deposits elsewhere in the western United States. The complex igneous history of the Needle Creek center has involved several periods of intrusive and probably extrusive activity. lntrusive rocks are calc-alkalic and include andesite, granodiorite, diorite, quartz monzonite, dacite, and rhyodacite. Stocks (1-30 kmz in exposed area), radial dike swarms, and sills make up the presently exposed plutonic masses and constitute lower-level vent fillings in an old stratovolcano. The Needle Creek igneous center is located approximately midway along a northwest-trending belt of intrusive rocks extending more than 100 km along the central axis of the Absaroka volcanic field. The igneous and mineralized centers within this belt were probably localized at the intersections of northwest- trending Laramide and possibly Tertiary fracture systems and earlier northeast-trending Precambrian structures in the underlying basement rocks.

The present study examined a process for precious metal recovery (silver and gold) from difficult minerals which exhibit refractory characteristics to cyanidation and ammonium thiosulfate leaching (low extraction and high consumption of leaching agent). It is well known that mangano-argentiferous minerals are mainly composed of manganese, silver, gold, and iron. In this research, a mineral sample from Monte del Favor mine, located in Hostotipaquillo, Jalisco, Mexico, was physically and chemically characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), fire assay, and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Two-stage leaching was carried out: first to eliminate manganese from the sample using sodium sulfite (Na2SO3) as a reductive reagent and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and a second stage to dissolve silver and gold with sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) and hydrochloric acid (HCl); the results show extraction around 96% for Mn and 98.73% and 83%of Ag and Au, respectively. The usefulness of high acidity and Na2SO3 to obtain good results in Mn and Ag leaching is discussed along with the roles that HCl and NaClO play in the dissolution of Ag and Au values.
