Three transportation systems in surface coal mines: 1-Truck Haulage, 2-Belt Conveying, and 3-Coarse-Coal Slurry Transportation are compared from the operations and cost point of Views. Computerized design and cost models were developed and cost data banks were compiled for each system. These models can be used to evaluate transportation systems and layouts that are practiced in most of the U.S. surface coal mines. A typical midwestern area strip mine was considered for illustration purposes. Sensitivity analysis on critical parameters such as production rate, transportation, distance, etc. was conducted and the outcomes are presented.

The use of standard dense-media cyclones is well known, as they have been in use for many years. They are especially well suited for operating at low separating densities and for treating difficult coals containing a high percentage of near-gravity at the point of separation. Very few modifications of the basic design have ever been made. The author recently, however, has been interested in the development of a new type of dense-media cyclone that has been produced in Japan. He has observed the testing of this unit and has collected much data which he feels should be of considerable interest to coal preparation engineers. He feels that this unit, called the Swirl Cyclone, may be of substantial value as an alternate to the standard cyclones. It is certainly worthy of further investigation. There has been relatively little written in English-language publications on the Swirl Cyclone. It was briefly described at the Fifth International Coal Preparation Congress. I It has been described in a general manner by the author in two prior publications. 2, 3 This paper proposes to describe this device in more detail and at the same time submit technical data illustrating its wide characteristics.

One need be neither an historian nor technologist to recognize that activi¬ties related to the conversion of coal to other usable energy forms have been active for nearly fifty years. The degree of such activity and its evolution to significant commercial proportions has, however, fluctuated widely with world circumstance. For the past decade there has existed both a consistent technology evolution effort in classic R & D proportions, and a mainstream commercial acti¬vity but in rather modest proportions when viewed from the vantage point of world energy needs. But the chain of events wherein it became increasingly obvious that we were in energy trouble irrespective of world politics, spurred alternative energy source activities in the fossil fuels areas. The oil embargo of 1973-1974 made the obvious even more so and provided additional emphasis for the need of such alternatives. Yet the preponderance of these added expenditures and activities (with one notable exception which is the subject of this discussion) has been focused on the intended identification of the best or ultimate process by means of analytical and modest empirical means, whereas our circumstance dictates a bold, higher-risk effort to prove the viability of coal conversion as an industry on a real-time, real-size, real-economics basis. With such proof on hand, industry demands in all related areas will provide the stimulus, motivation and environment for all processes. There is both need and room for many who will compete for a meaningful segment of this new industry which can grow at a rate never seen before in our growth history. The single program in the world today oriented specifically toward the goal of proof of industry viability is the Energy Research and Development Administration's CBF (clean boiler fuels) Program for which COALCON is proud to be the prime contractor.

For more than 100 years, diamond mining has been Namibia?s most important mining sector. Today, it provides the highest foreign currency income for the country?s development. Since the late 1970s, offshore mining of diamonds has gained more importance and now more than 60 percent of Namibia?s generally high-quality stones come from those offshore deposits, with a steady increase expected for the coming years. Diamonds in Namibia The mining industry is one of the three pillars of the Namibian economic development, along with tourism and fishing. Diamond mining is one of the two main mining activities in Namibia and diamond mining operations are rapidly moving from onshore to offshore deposits. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the current and future situation of the Namibian mining industry, with a special focus on the tasks and new technical developments for the successful excavation of beach and marine diamond deposits. The different deposits and the adequate applied mining technologies and methods are shown in examples.

The Lithium Corporation of America's Hallman-Beam spodumene-pegmatite open pit mine is located in the Kings Mountain area of North Carolina. Figure 1. Presently this area of North Carolina is the lithium center of the U.S., if not of the whole world. The Lithium Corporation mine was started in 1968 and now covers 61,000m2 (15 acres) with projected are reserves in excess of 20 years. Lithium occurs at the Hallman-Beam property in a mineral known as spodumene (LiAlSi2O6), a lithium aluminum silicate. The run-of-mine are averages 1.43 Li2O. Figure 2 of the general Mining Division flow sheet follows the concentration of the Li2O to 5.5% and also lists the various by-products that are sold commercially. The unique properties of lithium have led to many commercial applications, some of these including lubricating greases, ceramics, glasses, glazes, welding fluxes, aluminum reduction cells, dehumidifying and air-conditioning equipment, sanitizers, polymerization catalysts, batteries, and pharmaceuticals. In June 2022, Louisville MSD completed a 6.5 km (4-mile), 6.1 m (20-foot) finisheddiameter CSO conveyance and storage tunnel system located along the Ohio River in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. During construction, the Ohio River Tunnel alignment was expanded 2.4 km (1.5 miles) into areas where natural gas was detected. Without delaying construction, the project team developed and implemented a natural gas risk mitigation strategy to safely excavate the tunnel via TBM and install concrete lining. The risk mitigation strategy included the installation of gas-vent borings, increased tunnel ventilation, retrofitting tunneling equipment for “gassy” operations, and modifying the project specific HASP.

Of all the industrial clay minerals, attapulgite probably enjoys the widest variety of applications. A review published over three years ago by Haden and Schwint (18) cited some 80 individual uses, a list which continues to grow. In its near half-century of commercial life, attapulgite has received a generous share of research study and patent development effort, both on the part of producers as well as consumers. This work has been divided between understanding the mineral's structure or properties and applying it to specific end-uses. Naturally, information gained from the former has pointed toward opportunities in the latter. References of particular significance are cited throughout the text. Attapulgite's variety of uses derives from the unique three-dimensional structure and needle-shaped particle form of this crystalline hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate. Its inherent colloidal and sorptive properties are well known, and distinguish it from its sister clay minerals. Attapulgite is characterized by its high surface area, porosity, sorptivity, and decolorizing power. Its slips or slurries are viscous and thixotropic, however, unlike bentonite are not flocculated by electrolytes. In Table I are compared the general properties of attapulgite, bentonite, and kaolin. The properties in Table I are documented in greater detail by the wealth of scientific literature which has been published on the composition (14)(15), structure (6)(16), surface (16)(4)(22)(24), adsorption (31)(4)(5)(25), rheology (10-11)(12)(13)(26)(27)(32), plasticity (30) (31), and chemistry (23)(3)(7) of attapulgite. Attapulgite is the principal mineral constituent (70 to 80%) of attapulgite clay as it is commercially produced in the Georgia-Florida area of the United States. As mined, this clay also contains 10 to 1S% montmorillonite, sepiolite, and other clays; 4 to 8% quartz, and 1 to 5% calcite or dolomite. In the exploitation of porphyry-type deposits, the quality of the ore is mostly defined according to its grade. Besides the simplest distinction, ore-waste, several grade categories may exist and they correspond to the different ways in which the ore is further processed. At the time of mining the selection of the different categories is done from extensive information available from blast holes. But planning has to be done before this information is available and it is necessary for the geologist to forecast, from exploration and development data alone, the possible outcome of the selection done later on a block, a level, or the whole deposit and ultimately predict the ore reserves and value of the deposit. A good statement of this problem has been presented at the 1976 AIME annual meeting by Williamson and Hueller (1976). They have shown that, if the cut-off values are directly applied to the estimated grade of blocks, a gross overestimation of the recovered tonnage of ore (14%) will occur. This problem, now termed "the vanishing tons problem" (DaVid, 1977) seems to be common in many open-pit operations and it has been explained several times (DaVid, 1972; Huijbregts, 1975). In order to solve it l.Jilliamson and Mueller proposed a solution based on compiling masses and masses of blast hole data available from mined-out portions of the deposit. They derived empirical correction factors which provide for every block, given its estimated grade, the expected tonnage and average -grade of each category of material within that block. The purpose of our work is to repeat the same exercise but ignoring the blast holes data i.e. we want to derive the correction factors from the only DOH data. Doing this, we are more in the real conditions where the valuation of the mine and are reserve analysis has to be made before production actually starts. "Mining companies have included quantifying uncertainty, or at least risk, as a requirement of project justification for many years. However, many times this process lags behind the traditional mine planning process and the results are rarely used to improve the plan. Nearly every parameter used in a mine plan is an estimate and the mine planning engineer should recognize, and even embrace, the inherent uncertainty in those parameters and its effect on their forecast results. While many of the uncertainties are beyond the scope of the traditional mine plan (e.g. global market uncertainty, socio-political uncertainty, environmental uncertainty), some uncertainties can, and should, be included in the mine planning process.Many mining engineers have incorporated techniques such as Monte Carlo Simulation or Discrete Element Simulation to understand the range of productivity that can be expected for an operation, but most still rely upon one estimated model for what is likely the critical component of technical uncertainty, the geologic resource. Modern geostatistical methods can provide multiple orebody realizations to provide a thorough unbiased picture of the geologic uncertainty. However, most traditional mine planning techniques are not formulated to allow for multiple (100-200) realizations of each material quality/grade parameter.Commercial software companies and research groups are progressing with development of tools that can incorporate geologic uncertainty, and even optimize extraction plans in the uncertain environment. Unfortunately, this author believes that a significant number of mining operations will not be able to adopt these techniques due to the computational requirements of the advanced techniques and the costs associated with implementing proprietary software. In an attempt to encourage mining engineers to embrace the inherent uncertainty in their mine plans, this article presents a cost-effective alternative that can be developed in-house, at any mine, to schedule mid- to long-term mine plans while continuously monitoring the uncertainty in the results. The aim of this article is that by demonstrating the usefulness of such a system, mining companies will encourage engineers, geologists and geostatisticians to find ways to incorporate this powerful data into their processes and procedures."

Applications of machine learning and robotics in the tunneling industry are still nascent. Research and development are ongoing in TBM guidance; prediction of TBM cutter wear and tunneling induced ground deformations; and robotic arms for segment installation, inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of TBM cutting tools. This paper presents a case study of geological profile reconstruction using multimodal machine learning. The results from this study can aid the development and application of multimodal AI technologies to generate data reports and geological profiles in real time, taking voice recordings, photos, or videos obtained directly from the field as inputs.

"The diversification of energy sources in the United States has seen some major shifts during the past decade resulting from:• A sudden abundance of low-cost natural gas becoming available through advanced horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques.• Incentive-driven policies leading to new development in alternative energy.• The emergence of alternative energy sources proliferated as a result of state and federal level incentives and falling capital costs.Coal was once recognized as the primary low-cost fuel source for the generation of electricity in the United States for most of the last century, providing upward of 50 percent of the total generation capacity during much of that period. However, within the past decade, lower-cost natural gas has overtaken coal as the primary source of fuel used in electricity generation, and alternative sources have steadily grown to now account for approximately 10 percent of the overall mix.West Virginia and Kentucky have not experienced the full breadth of the fuel shift, and, as of 2016, still obtained approximately 80-90 percent of electric power generation from coal. However, as coal plants are retired, there has been a shift toward natural gas for new power plants constructed in the region. The economics of power generation (i.e., lowcost fuel source) has typically been the major factor in determining shifts from one fuel source or technology to another. However, governmental energy policies and incentives have more recently been used to promote the development of new alternative technologies such as wind and solar energy growth to diversify the energy mix. The implementation of these incentives has provided some needed traction and resulted in driving the cost of manufacturing and installation of these new wind and solar systems downward to be more cost competitive with conventional fossil-fueled power sources. Future shifts in the generation capacity by fuel type will also be inevitable and impossible to project accurately as policies change and innovative technologies evolve. Determining factors may include the expiration of current incentives, decreasing capital costs, future environmental regulations, evolution of energy storage systems, technical challenges associated with increasing intermittent sources of generation and the development of unforeseen technologies. West Virginia and Kentucky have been among the least solar friendly states, ranking 44th and 48th of the 50 states (Fig. 1 for WV). Diesel particulate matter (DPM) has been classified as a carcinogen to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. As a result of its potential carcinogenic nature, DPM exposure is regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Currently, diesel emissions in the workplace are monitored by collecting the aerosol onto filters, which are then sent to a laboratory for thermal-optical analysis using the NIOSH method 5040. This process can take days or even weeks, and workers can potentially be exposed to excessive levels of DPM before the problem is identified. Moreover, the delay involved in getting the loaded filter to the lab inevitably means the loss of some of the more volatile organic carbon. To remedy this delay, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are seeking to develop a field-portable, real-time method for measuring elemental and organic carbons in DPM aerosols. In the current study, the use of mid-infrared spectrometry was investigated. It is believed that mid-infrared spectroscopy is more suitable for use in a real-time field-portable device than thermo-optical analysis methods. This article presents a method for measuring organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in DPM for a broad range of OC/EC ratios. The method has been successfully applied to laboratory-generated and mine samples.

The effect of some of the reagents, namely hydrocarbon oil, Syntex (sulfated coconut oil surfactant), pine oil, sodium silicate, and lime, used at the Climax mill on the recovery and grade of molybdenite and gangue minerals has been investigated experimentally using factorially designed test approach in the laboratory. The results of the investigation are presented in two dimensional plots. The lower additions of lime (equivalent to a pH of 8 to 8.5) were desirable for maximizing recovery subject to constraints on grade. Higher additions of pine oil improved recovery, but only at the expense of grade. A mathematical model of the objectives of an operating plant was formulated and optimum reagent conditions obtained.

Lamco Joint Venture is operating a Dravo Pelletizing machine to produce pellets from the natural slimes of an earthy hematite ore. The grate area of the machine 3.3 x 106 m equal to 350 m2 (3800 sq. ft.) and the installed fan capacity is 8200 HP. The limiting factor for production is normally fan capacity. This means that the processing fans can not pull the additional air (i.e the additional calories or BTUs) through the bed which would be required for increased production. A way to increase production without major modifications is to supply the additional calories needed for increase production by adding coal to the pellet feed. After successful laboratory tests following method of coal addition has been chosen and the following results have been obtained. 1. The ground coal is added to the slurry prior to the filters and the rotary dryer. 2. By adding 0.6% coal, an increase of about 15% in production rate has been obtained. 3. No significant changes of metallurgical properties have been observed (i.e. tumbler index, compressive strength, ferrous iron content, reducibility, Linder degradation and swelling). 4. No unexpected operation problems have been experienced. The pellet discharge temperature increases and is the limit for how much production can be increased by coal addition without making plant modifications.

The mining industry is currently looking to better understand, anticipate, and be able to mitigate business and operational risks in order to deliver the rewards of risk taking, and to minimize the frequency and impact of risk on the downside. Assessing risk works from the premise that the identification and management of existing risks can be very challenging, especially when threats are not easy to detect, the likelihood of occurrence is difficult to gauge, and/or the consequences are uncertain. Some approach this as a ?check the box? task, even though fire and safety incidents continue to occur and investigations often find the hazard analyses did not properly identify the cause or consequence. You cannot engineer protective designs and safeguards for causes and consequences that have not been identified appropriately. For the mining industry, risk management is an important tool for making critical decisions and, in some cases, meeting regulatory requirements. Providing high-quality documentation that meets both regulatory and corporate requirements is critical for maintaining safe, uninterrupted mining operations. Risk management is a five-part process: 1. Identify the hazards and their causes, 2. Determine the hazard consequences, 3. Calculate the frequency of occurrence, 4. Quantify the risk associated with the system, process, or procedure, and 5. Provide feasible solutions for the risks

"The history of the mining industry is littered with in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC), which should not be confused with the International Protocol for Carbon Capture, projects that failed. The failure is not the technical one of “did it achieve the desired tonnage rate for a longish test period” but, rather, the far more important one of “did it provide return on the investment in the manner that was promised?” While quite a few can claim the former, very few system installations can claim the latter.The reasons for the many failures are numerous, but they are all characterized by a combination of an element of engineering optimism in any, or all of the production rates, the productivity, or the operating and maintenance costs and in predicting the continuity of operating conditions. In these days of big data, propagating such a situation is rapidly becoming unforgivable.In this article, the three most common scenarios put to the corporate board for approval, and the logic as to why they were selected, are examined (with the irony included intentionally).• Fully mobile crusher, fed by a shovel and conveyed out of the pit to a waste dump / process plant.• Semimobile crusher (much more expensive than a fixed crushing station but which apparently allows trucks to short haul inside the pit and improve productivity), which moves when the face moves.• Relocatable crusher (more expensive than a fixed crushing station but which gets relocated at great expense after all the fixed infrastructure impeding relocation is demolished) fed by trucks that don’t leave the pit mostly.This paper will also consider the truth about their operational performance and associate costs."

"Antioquia region, in Colombia, is considered one of the areas with the highest mercury contamination in the world due to its use in gold recovery through artisanal mining, emissions to the environment between 100 and 150 tonnes of mercury are estimated by year. Therefore it became necessary to develop a project in which it was proposed aim to empower traditional artisanal mining community, or in different areas, such as gold mining in the region of Antioquia, in the implementation of safe mining practices and environmentally sustainable, from the introduction of clean technologies, in order to prevent or mitigate the impacts generated by traditional mining on the environment and the communities involved. In order to achieve this training to traditional mining community developed and technical visits to artisanal mining were performed in order to optimize operating processes and promote safe mining practices. In the project more than 1400 artisanal miners were trained.INTRODUCTION In the developing world, a combined 30 million individuals extract more than 30 different minerals using rudimentary techniques. Gold is the preferred mineral extracted by artisanal operators due to its high unit value and its market price, which has increased almost sevenfold over the last decade (Veiga et al, 2014). The artisanal gold mining sector in Colombia has 200,000 miners officially producing 30 tonnes Au/a. In the Northeast of the Department of Antioquia, there are 17 mining towns and between 15,000 and 30,000 artisanal gold miners (M. Veiga, 2010) (Upme, 2014). This production, however, has caused environmental problems, including high levels of river siltation and mercury pollution (Veiga et al, 2014) (UPME, 2007) (Cordy et al., 2013). The mercury contamination in Colombia by artisanal gold mining has been recognized by a number of researchers and local authorities for over a decade estimated that the annual mercury emissions from artisanal gold miners in Colombia in 2007 were between 50 and 100 tonnes, however given recent gold value increases and gold rush activity, current mercury emissions are likely much higher. Colombia is likely the world's 3rd largest source of mercury emissions from AGM after China (240 to 650 tonnes of Hg/a) and Indonesia (130 to 160 tonnes of Hg/a) (Telmer and Veiga, 2008) and is the world's highest per capita mercury polluter (M. Veiga, 2010)."

Energy management in industry has recently achieved notice as a way to reduce costs without decreasing production. The same approach used in industry can be used in mining, even though the processes are different. This approach is based upon a three phase system of data collection, implementation, and monitoring, all aimed at gathering and evaluating information in such a way as to have a maximum impact on energy costs. This approach has these advantages: (1) attention is directed toward the part of each mining system where the most energy is used, (2) input is collected systematically from all persons involved in the operation of each system, and (3) a means of monitoring the progress toward established goals is created. The mining systems considered are truck haulage, conveyor haulage, blasting and crushing, and lighting. After describing the general procedure, the authors have described a specific method for improving the efficiency (and hence the energy consumption) of round-trip truck haul age systems.

The National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) program since 1974 has been designed to accomplish a comprehensive coverage of the 48 conterminous States and Alaska to evaluate the total uranium resources of the USA. This resource base includes both ore reserves and potential resources. Techniques include airborne radiometric and magnetic surveys, by hydrogeochemical surveys, surface and subsurface geologic studies, and the application of improved geochemical exploration and resource assessment methods (Table 1). In brief review, the current status of each of the five basic NURE elements is as follows: In the Aerial Surveys, in the conterminous 48 states, the flying has been completed in 89 of the NTMS 10 x 2° NURE quadrangles, and is in progress in 39 more (Figure 1). Complete quadrangle data have already been open filed for 46 additional quadrangles, for a total of 174 for which data gathering is either complete or in progress. In Alaska, the flying is complete in 42 quadrangles, and quadrangle data have been open filed for 34 more, for a total of 76 (Figure 2).

This paper describes the original planning which actually resulted in the opening of a new aggregate plant located in central New York State. This plant, which is now named the Skaneateles Plant of The General Crushed Stone Company is unique in that the plant itself is a departure not only in design but in concept of operation from the normal aggregate plant the company has operated in the past. Whether or not the concepts which resulted in the Skaneateles Plant are economically feasible remain to be proven by the next few years of operation. By way of background data about our company which will help set the stage for this presentation, we currently operate seventeen stone quarries in the states of New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. These quarries range in size from 200,000 tons per year to 1,500,000 tons per year with a total annual stone production of approximately 7,500,000 tons. We also produce about 1,250,000 tons of sand and gravel at six sand and gravel plants, 300,000 cubic yards of ready mix concrete, 1,500,000 tons of bituminous concrete, aglime and other minor construction materials. In many cases we are our own best customer consuming a large percentage of the total production of our own aggregates in our various ready mix and blacktop plants. Up to the concept of the Skaneateles Plant our operating facilities have been of the permanent type as opposed to the moveable or portable type plant. The steps involved in the case history of Skaneateles will begin with the basic economic requirements, market research, geologic surveys, land acquisition, zoning and financing and carry through to the final design and construction. We will attempt to show what some of the problems were, how we interpretted them and how we proceeded to solve them. The current results are apparent and can be analysed. The success of the total concepts of the Skaneateles Plant remains for future analysis.
