For many years The Hanna Mining Company has been investigating the flotation of the non-magnetic iron ores located in the Western Mesabi Range of Minnesota.1 During the 1950's a number of anionic iron procedures were evaluated and in the late 1950's and early 1960's the anionic silica floats and the cationic silica floats were tested with improved results.2 The cationic float became more attractive and effective by the use of the improved ether amines. About 1962 a desliming process by selective flocculation was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Hines at Minneapolis', Minnesota.3, 4, 5 This is a very efficient method of desliming and was first tried with the anionic silica float and then the more practical cationic silica float. In the mid 1960's The Hanna Research Laboratory began studies to optimize the selective flocculation process for our ores. This was followed by studies to optimize the cationic silica float after desliming by selective flocculation. This testwork was done on large, 500 to 1000 tonne bulk samples of oxidized taconite which were later successfully piloted at .68t/h (1500 Lbs. /hr.). A program was then begun to test the oxidized portions of numerous taconite drill holes to outline the ore bodies and develop mining plans. This paper will discuss our optimization results of both the selective flocculation and the cationic silica float as applied to our various ores. In addition the pilot plant studies and drill core testwork will be discussed.

This paper initially was to be on the design, construction and operation of the Lucky Friday mill. However, this subject has been pretty well covered in some of the mining publications in the past few years - specifically Mining Congress Journal for April, 1961 and Mining World for March, 1962- : In order to avoid too much repetition, we decided to present in this paper a comparison of the Lucky Friday mill constructed in 1959, and the Mayflower mill built by us in 1962. During the past three years Hecla Mining Company has constructed two relatively small mills: The Lucky Friday mill at Mullan, Idaho 750 T/day; and the Mayflower mill at Heber, Utah - 450 T/day. These mills were engineered, designed and constructed by Hecla, using principally our own personnel, with very little outside (contractor) labor employed. This paper presents a comparison of some of the interesting features of these mills, and where differences occur, it discusses the reasons for the various differences. It compares such points as the testing program, physical layout of the plant, construction costs, the grinding section, the flotation section, tailings disposal, metallurgy, recovery, grades, operating costs, etc. To help illustrate, and to compare these features, we will project pairs of slides showing each of the two mills. Mining in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District has been going on for over 100 years with a long- term continuation very likely. Mining is presently carried out at depths below the -5000' horizon. As mining continues at ever increasing depths, higher in-situ rock stresses and subsequent rock deformation is encountered making mining costly and hazardous. To provide access for men and materials in such areas, a wooden raise preparation structure is typically built. Although these structures provide adequate support and access, they have proved to be very costly to construct and maintain.

Spirals have become one of the most popular methods for treating fine coal. Unfortunately, spirals tend to produce an undesirably high specific gravity cut-point and often misplace significant amounts of coal and/or rock. In the present study, a process-engineering tool known as linear circuit analysis was used to identify problems with traditional spiral circuits and to suggest alternative configurations. These analyses indicate that a modified rougher-cleaner circuit incorporating a middlings recycle stream offers the best option for improving performance while maintaining a reasonable circulating load. In light of this finding, a full-scale test circuit was installed and evaluated at an existing preparation plant. Data obtained from the plant tests indicate that the new spiral circuit can simultaneously reduce cut-point and improve separation efficiency. Preliminary economic analyses show that the new circuit provides an attractive payback on the capital investment.

"The International Organization of Standards defines risk as “the effect of uncertainties on achieving objectives (15).” In mining, many uncertainties can influence the outcome of personal or professional objectives and are often difficult to predict. Risk management, the minimization and control of adverse effects from exposure to identified risks, is a well-established concept that can summarized as “being smart about taking chances” (12). Risk management now consists of management processes unique to numerous organizations across many industries, as varying sectors encounter a variety of needs, including the analysis and mitigation of risks related to physical security, product liability, information security, various forms of insurance, regulatory compliance, and workplace safety (12). The reoccurrence of multiple fatality events in the US mining industry, especially the underground coal sector, suggests an opportunity for improved methods of major safety hazard identification, assessment, and mitigation. A risk management approach would include ready identification and mitigation of these risks, inclusive stakeholder engagement, and rapid integration. While many solutions to reducing the risk of mine disasters have been proposed including stricter regulation and improved technology, a comprehensive risk management approach has yet to be fully integrated in the US mining industry. In December of 2006, R. Larry Grayson of the National Mining Association’s Mine Safety Technology and Training Commission called for “a new paradigm for ensuring safety in underground coal mines, one that focuses on systematic and comprehensive risk management as the foundation from which all life-safety efforts emanate (7).” A risk management approach has already been implemented with success in Australia’s minerals industry as part of a transition during the mid-1990s from a prescriptive based health and safety attitude to a more proactive, duty-of care [risk-based] philosophy (13, 16, 17).FUNDAMENTAL ELEMENTS OF RISK MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES The fundamental components of a comprehensive risk assessment/management program are well-established within the realm of mining health and safety. Figure 1 depicts the elements of a typical mining hazard management framework. The first step in any safety-based risk management system is to identify and assess hazards by their location, nature, and magnitude within a mine. Next, a decision is made about choosing to eliminate, mitigate, or tolerate each hazard. Ideally, a hazard will be eliminated during the design stages of mining, though dynamic mining conditions often require continuous improvement and reevaluation of existing hazard controls. If elimination is not possible, hazard mitigation actions can consist of methods, rules, equipment, competencies, or other mechanisms. If a hazard is simply tolerated, as many inherent mining hazards must be, then specialized administrative controls must be utilized to minimize losses. During this process, the performance of each action is monitored and modified as needed (13)."

Uranium associated with phosphate deposits has been the subject of numerous investigations (1-8). In the land-pebble phosphate deposits of central Florida, uranium is found in the phosphate matrix (ore) and in the leached zone between the over-burden and matrix (1). Between 0.01 to 0.02 percent uranium is found in the leached zone, which consists of apatite and aluminum phosphate minerals (crandallite, wavellite, millisite) (Z). The primary phosphate mineral in the matrix is apatite, and the 0.005 to 0.01 percent uranium typically found in the matrix is associated with this mineral (1). It is generally believed that uranium substitutes for calcium in the apatite structure (3-5). Clay and quartz phases associated with phosphate deposits contain little uranium (1, 6), and no descrete uranium minerals have been detected in these deposits (4). A typical phosphate matrix consists of quartz, slimes (-150 mesh material) and recoverable phosphate. When the matrix is beneficiated, partition of uranium and radium takes place (9, 10). Although considerable data exists on how uranium is distributed in the phosphate deposits, no systematic study has recently been reported on the distribution of uranium during phosphate rock beneficiation. The purpose of this study was to determine how uranium is distributed in the various strata which comprise the overall land-pebble phosphate deposits, as well as how the uranium is redistributed during beneficiation of phosphate matrix. To obtain this information studies were carried out on matrix samples obtained from three different mines in central Florida. Using pilot-plant scale beneficiation, an analysis was performed on how uranium in the matrix is distributed among the pebble fractions, flotation concentrates, flotation tails, and slimes. The uranium level profile for an active mining area was also obtained. Also, since thousands of acres of slime ponds may someday become a source of both phosphate and uranium, a depth versus uranium content profile was determined for an inactive slime pond.

INTRODUCTION In the past, the cost and time required for the construction of shafts has played an important part in the planning of underground mines. For reasons that are discussed later, the economics and technology of shaft construction in the future can be expected to play an even greater role in the planning of new mines and the operation of existing mines. Indeed, the very feasibility of a proposed mining venture may depend on the cost and timing of the shaft requirements. The most commonly used shaft sinking methods used today for excavating vertical shafts are discussed and the need for new technology and methods emphasized. In one study by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, it was reported that the coal industry in the United States alone could require 170 to 190 new shafts per year on the basis of doubling current production by the mid 1980's or 70 to 90 shafts on a more moderate coal production expansion program. This study concluded that the attainment of the required number of shafts would be unlikely with the present shaft sinking resources and costs. In order to meet the requirements for shafts in the United States coal and metal mining industries, more efficient and speedier shaft construction methods will be necessary. Current shaft sinking methods are, in the main, labor intensive, and it is noteworthy that it is becoming increasingly difficult to attract the work force required to sink shafts conventionally. Ground control failures are one of the main causes of accidents in the underground stone mining industry. Some of the fundamental tools for rockfall hazard identification are related to rock mass characterization and geotechnical discontinuity mapping. Recent technological advances in these methods are related to remote sensing techniques and point cloud processing software for automated discontinuity mapping. Remote sensing techniques, such as LiDAR and photogrammetry, generate multimillion point clouds with millimetric precision, capturing the structure of the rock mass. The automated point cloud processing tools offer alternative algorithm-based methods to characterize and map these discontinuities. However, their applicability is constrained by multiple factors such as site specific conditions of the rock mass and the parameters used within the mapping algorithms. This paper evaluates the performance of automated discontinuity extraction software compared with manual virtual discontinuity mapping. Sampling windows from laser-scanned sections in an underground limestone mine are defined and mapped using discontinuity set extractor (DSE). Results from the virtual discontinuity software are compared with manually extracted fractures from I-Site based on reviewing orientation, trace length, spacing, number of extracted discontinuities, and processing time. The analysis determined that the automated mapping algorithm was able to identify the same discontinuity sets that had been manually mapped. The automated mapping software mapped an excessive amount of smaller fractures, which caused the comparison of both mapping techniques to be unsuccessful in terms of trace length and spacing.

The North Singhbhum Mobile Belt (NSMB) lies between two crustal-scale shear zones, the South Purulia Shear Zone (SPSZ) at the north, and the Singhbhum Shear Zone (SSZ) at the south. The Babaikundi-Birgaon Axis (BBA) is an east-west trending secondary shear zone in the NSMB lying south of SPSZ, which is known for the occurrence of gold along with other sulfide minerals within the quartz reefs. The present study has been carried out at north of Ichadih village, which lies on the BBA. The present study attempts combined electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and self-potential methods along a profile of 470-m length in the Ichadih area to map the potential mineralized zones. Initially, ERT sections generated by Wenner, Wenner- Schlumberger, dipole-dipole, and joint inversion of the combined array have been analyzed, and results are validated through the analysis of model resolution. A prominent low resistivity (10–100 Ωm) associated with quartz reef/limonitic quartz reef at a depth of approximately 30–85 m, encircled by a high resistive (more than 10,000 Ωm) formation associated with metasedimentary rock, has been delineated using joint inversion of the combined array. Further, analysis of self-potential (SP) anomaly using particle swarm optimization inversion also confirms the prominent low SP anomaly at a depth of 77.3 m, which is analogous to the low resistivity anomaly identified in the joint inversion of the combined geo-electric array. Subsequent analysis of a complex synthetic geo-electrical model analogous to the present field situation proves the efficacy of the joint inversion of combined arrays. As a whole, joint inversion of multi-array data is established as an efficient technique for better subsurface imaging in case of the complex subsurface structure. In-depth analyses confirm the possibility of sulfide mineral-rich deposit (quartz reef/limonitic quartz reef) which requires further geological drilling and lithogeochemical sample analysis, for possible future exploration.

Under various state laws enacted mostly within the last 20 years, reclamation requirements and standards for hard-rock mining operations have been established virtually everywhere in the western United States. Unlike the uniform and detailed coal mine reclamation requirements under the federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act ( "SMCRA" ) and state programs mode led after SMCRA, the various state law hard-rock mine reclamation requirements are based upon a variety of objectives, and therefore are subject to varying standards from state to state. While the diversity of reclamation requirements complicates the determination of what reclamation measures will be required at any particular mine, there are valid reasons for this diversity. There are dozens of different commodities mined in the United States, and mining methods are different for each commodity. Local natural conditions such as climate, precipitation, geology, hydrology, and biology vary widely across the county. Site-specific conditions also affect mining and reclamation methods. Also, factors such as economics, land use, and environmental protection issues receive different priorities in different states and communities within those states. State reclamation requirements in general provide the flexibility to consider site-specific circumstances, allowing operators to design and engineer the best reclamation measures for each mining site. To the mine developer or manager, reclamation requirements must be translated into design, operational, and closure measures for mine planning. Each of these measures must then be assigned additional costs to be factored into the economic decisions for a particular mining operation. On a broader level, reclamation costs must be factored into decisions such as where to invest in exploration and mine development. The purpose of this paper is to provide a summary of the state non-coal mine reclamation requirements in twelve western states. This summary comparison may be useful as a starting point in considering how local reclamation requirements will impact potential mining costs.

The Wyoming craton in the western United States is a favorable terrane for diamond deposits. The craton hosts a variety of ultramafic, ultrabasic, and ultrapotassic rocks. Additionally, a few hundred 'kimberlitic' heavy mineral anomalies and some geophysical and remote sensing anomalies indicate the presence of undiscovered, mantle-derived, pipes in the craton. The Wyoming craton is separated into a Wyoming 'archon' known as the Wyoming Province, and the Colorado 'proton' known as the Colorado Province. The 'archon' underlies much of Montana and Wyoming and continues north into Alberta and Saskatchewan; the Colorado 'proton' underlies much of Colorado and a small portion of Wyoming. Although most exploration geologists would consider the 'archon' the most favorable terrane for commercial diamond deposits, the 'proton' has produced more than 120,000 diamonds, while the 'archon' has not been very productive.

In early 1970, General Mills Chemicals, Inc. announced the availability of en improved liquid ion exchange reagent, LIX® 64N, for the recovery of copper from various solutions, such as dump leach liquors. LIX 64N has been shown to be a considerable advance over LIX 64, and is presently in use in three commercial plants. Results have been very gratifying. For example, one of the plants was designed for operational production of 40,000 pounds copper per day, and in fact reached this output within the third week following startup of the plant. In addition to the operating plants, another is scheduled to come on stream this month with L D( 64N being used to extract and recover both copper and nickel. The chemical properties and operating characteristics of this reagent have been fully described in a previous paper. 1 LIX 64N is quite an effective and selective extractint for copper, even with copper contents as high as 15 g/l, but the reagent is somewhat limited in pH range, and loses some of its extraction efficiency as the pH drops below 0.8. Liquors derived from vat leaching, electrolytic tankhouae bleed streams, or some of the new leach schemes derived to solubilize copper from sulfide concentrates are examples of the liquors that present major problems when treated via liquid ion exchange. LIX 64N could extract some of the copper from such streams, but recovery was limited to about 75 percent. Also, in some parts of the world there are streams which are relatively low in copper (-5 g/l) but which are very high in acid (25-50 g/1 H2SO4). Again, LIX 64N can attain only about 75 percent recovery from such streams. The recovery of silver and gallium from flue dust with acidified thiourea solutions was examined. The studied parameters were temperature, particle size, thiourea concentration, acid concentration, and the presence of oxidants. The study of the extraction of these two metals was undertaken in sulfuric acid medium. Silver dissolution was dependent on all examined parameters, whereas gallium extraction was only dependent on the initial acid concentration. The experimental results suggest a new very efficient method for recovery of both silver and gallium. Almost complete recovery of silver and gallium can be accomplished within 90 minutes. A technological scheme for recovery of both metals is also proposed.

Sixty years of rock bursting in the Coeur d'Alene district has taught painful lessons and led to a number of practical advances in controlling rock-burst hazards. This paper summarizes these lessons, concentrating on practical measures that have been successfully adopted to reduce hazards. These lessons are explained in the context of district mining history and current understanding of rock-burst phenomena. Overall, the paper provides the practicing mine engineer with an appreciation of rock-burst hazards and an overview of practical measures that can be used to control these hazards in the context of Coeur d'Alene district experience.

As the mining industry faces increased challenges with declining ore grades and harder to access deposits, operating mine sites in an environmentally responsible and economically viable manner will require innovations that improve efficiency in energy logistics, and automation. Technological advancements in mining have been successful primarily because of the willingness and capability of these solutions to share information with one another, for example OEM payload systems sending information to Fleet Management Systems, and in turn Fleet Management Systems interfacing to ERP systems. To promote and facilitate the sharing of data, there has been a push towards open standards with initiatives led by organizations like ISO, ISA, EMESRT, and GMG. These efforts are aimed at creating a more collaborative and interoperable environment within the sector. However, when it comes to implementing autonomous solutions, a different trend dominates— closed-stack solutions. These closed stack solutions not only prohibit a mine site from selecting best-of-breed solutions, by blocking the competition from entering the market, they also risk slowing innovation that could help overcome the challenges the mining industry faces. Open Autonomy, an internationally published standard that allows any FMS to work with any Autonomous solution, breaks this closed-stack approach and invites competition from other industries. This competition comprises of autonomous suppliers from other industries and manufacturers of smaller, civil-sized haul trucks. The availability and capabilities of these smaller-sized autonomous haul trucks will help tackle the challenges of responsibly and economically mining lower quality ore grades and mining harder to access deposits.

Recent advances in Virtual Reality (VR) technology have resulted in major opportunities to improve safety training of mine workers, supervisors and managers. The hazardous nature of both surface and underground environments limits the type of safety training that can be carried out. VR offers the potential to expose mine personnel to hazardous situations in a safe, highly visual and interactive manner. Customized simulations of mine layouts, dynamic operations and mine environment can be set up and mine personnel can be allowed to move around the virtual mine, making decisions at key points. The consequences of both correct and incorrect decisions can be immediately fed back to the trainee.

The growing demand and a diminishing supply of conventional crude oil in North America are bringing about an ever increasing interest in the so-called "synthetic fuels". With one commercial plant already in full production, another in the planning and engineering stage, and still others being seriously considered, the Athabasca tar sands is proving to be a leading center of interest. Here, and in the closely related deposits, reserves in place total over 700 billion barrels.1 This major source of new oil is about ready to play a significant role in the filling of ever increasing market demand. When and if fully developed, the Athabasca tat sands could make both Canada and the United States substantially independent of all off-shore supplies of crude for many years to come. Its product, a high-quality, low-sulphur synthetic crude, is beginning to enter the market place at a most favourable time.

The waste rock and tailings backfill into the mined-out areas are the most effective method for solving the environmental pollution and surface disasters for nonferrous metals mines. In practice, the success and availability of backfill operations are dependent on the slurry fluidity and the strength properties of cement backfill. The transport of the slurry through the pipeline to the designated backfilling area relies on its eximious flow properties, while the appropriate strength of the filling body ensures the safe operation of the stope. In this paper, the effects of cement and aggregate types on the slurry fluidity and strength characteristics of cemented backfill are studied in detail, which are often ignored in other pieces of literature. Diffusivity is used as an indicator to evaluate the slurry fluidity. Various slurries whose concentrations ranging from 70%, 73%, 75%, 78%, and 80% are made with different aggregate ratios and cement-sand ratios are tested. It has been shown that slurry fluidity is inversely related to its concentration, but 78% is the “stopping point” for the deterioration of fluidity. The addition of rod-milled sand improves or worsens the cemented backfill (CB) strength depending on the amount of rob-milled sand. The uniaxial compression experiment results on 216 CB specimens produced by different combinations of influencing variables showed that CB specimens made from cement with superior mechanical properties have a higher uniaxial compressive strength (σucs). It has been also found that the effect of aggregate ratio on the CB strength is not singular, but works in conjunction with the curing time and the cement-sand ratio. The longer the curing time and the higher the cement content, the higher the CB’s σucs. To avoid the time-consuming and costly problem of obtaining the strength of the CB from indoor experiments, an SVR model capable of predicting the uniaxial compression strength of CB specimens is proposed, which is optimized by genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The results of the three performance indexes (MAPE, MSE, and R2) show the superior performance of the GA-SVR and PSO-SVR models and the agreement of the predicted results with the experimental results, which indicate that these two models can accurately predict the σucs of CB.

The U.S. Geological Survey, in support of underground testing of nuclear explosives, has developed a technique (Dudley, 1910) to predict the inflow of ground water to large underground chambers that are cylindrical in shape. By treating the chamber as a large-diameter well pumped at constant drawdown, the nonsteady discharge can be computed by the method of Hantush (1961) for analyzing flowing wells under leaky artesian conditions. In mining applications, whether for mineral recovery or for nuclear testing, the most serious departure from the conditions of Hantush's model results from the gradual enlargement of the opening under drained conditions. Inherent in the analytical technique is that the "well" is fully completed at the time that dewatering begins. Because safety is the prime concern, however, initial pumping systems or personnel evacuation procedures must be designed to handle the greatest conceivable inflow. DEFINITIONS Because somewhat different meanings are attached to similar words in different technical fields, the U.S. Geological Survey definitions (Lohman, 1970) of several hydrologic terms used in this report are given below. An aquifer is a formation, group of formations, or part of a formation that contains sufficient saturated permeable material to yield significant quantities of water to wells, and springs. A confining bed is a body of material lying stratigraphically adjacent to one or more aquifers and having a hydraulic conductivity distinctly lower than that of the aquifer. The total head (dimensions L) of a liquid at a given point is the sum of three components: (1) elevation head, he, which is equal to the elevation of the point above a datum; (2) pressure head, hp, which is the height of a column of static water that can be supported by the static pressure at the point; and (3) velocity head, hv, which is the height the kinetic energy of the liquid is

Separation of refractory rock phosphate (P2O5 = 11.5%) from the Dalir area, Iran, containing quartz, calcite and other impurities, by calcination and flotation processes has been successfully used to upgrade the phosphate values. Petrographic studies of this ore showed that collophanite was the major phosphate mineral and the main gangue minerals were calcite, dolomite and quartz. The results of characterization studies showed that the liberation degree of apatite occurred below the average grain size of 140 µm. Preliminary flotation tests were used to process the phosphate samples. Results of preliminary flotation tests showed that they don?t contain any desirable efficiency (grade or recovery) of P2O5. Calcination was the best process for preconcentration of this ore. In the desliming stage, about 14.4% of total P2O5 was removed. Encouraging concentrate grades were obtained after flotation with anionic and cationic flotation, successively. The reagent schemes that have been used in this study consisted of COCO-amine acetate and fatty acid as silicate and apatite collectors, respectively, as well as fuel oil and anionic poly acryl amid as promoter collectors. The optimum pH values for direct and reverse flotations of phosphate were 11 and 6, respectively. Experiments conducted using d80=140 µm deslimed fractions has yielded an acceptable grade of more than 30% P2O5 with a recovery of more than 62%. Finally, a laboratory flowsheet for the processing of Dalir refractory phosphate ore has been proposed.
