"The overall goal of this study was to develop a suitable flowsheet to extract rare earth elements (REEs) from coal ash. Only the findings from the first part of this study is being reported at this time. A total of fourteen coal samples of different ranks were examined for REEs concentration. An anthracite coal sample, originating from Pennsylvania having more than 700 ppm (in the coal ash) was selected for the REE extraction tests. The experimental program completed so far included high temperature leaching using nitric acid, followed by the solvent extraction tests. A 4x2x2 experimental design was used to conduct a total of thirty two high temperature leaching tests by varying acid molarity (at 4 levels), solid content (at 2 level) and leaching time (at 2 level). The highest LREE (light REE) recovery of 90% and HREE (heavy REE) recovery of 94% were obtained from the most optimum leaching test condition while maintaining the impurity recovery to the leachate at less than 40%. Solvent extraction experiments were conducted to recover the REE’s from the above leachate solution using a variety of organic extractants including, TBP, Cyanex, D2EHPA and their combinations. D2EHPA was found to be the best extractant during this SX text series providing nearly 99% recovery of REEs. INTRODUCTION The demand for rare earth element and other strategic metals (REM) in the world is rapidly increasing due to their use in a variety of high technology applications. More than 100,000 tons of rare earth oxides (REO) are being used worldwide on an annual basis. However, we have less than 10% of the world reserve of rare earth element (REE) mineral deposits in the US. More than 60% of rare earth oxide (REO) was imported to the US from outside (mostly from China) in the year of 2013. However, China’s institution of export quota has significantly reduced the supply of REMs to the U.S. Hence, new ways of producing REM and/or finding substitutes for those metals for the high-tech applications need to be invented/discovered in a timely manner. Coal Combustion Byproducts (CCBs), which are discarded as waste materials in most cases, are known to contain REEs (in low concentration) that could be extracted using a suitable process flowsheet. This may be a worthwhile route to pursue considering the short supply of REMs and the abundance of coal ash in thousands of ash ponds in the US. On an annual basis, more than 110 million tons of Coal Combustion Byproducts (CCBs) are being produced while satisfying our nation’s need for electricity (ACAA, 2014). However, less than 50% of these CCBs are being successfully used in various applications and the remainder is being dumped as waste materials in the landfills and ash ponds."

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is conducting research and development on a coal-burning gas turbine. This work includes the development of (1) turbine blades resistant to coal ash erosion, (2) equipment to feed coal under pressure to a turbine, (3) an efficient combustion system, and (4) equipment to remove coal ash from the gases that drive the turbine. Initial emphasis is being placed on testing the first turbine ever equipped with blades designed specifically for use with coal as the fuel. Operating tests with this turbine are now in progress. This paper describes the Bureau's coal-burning gas turbine development program and progress on this operating test.

The aphorism that provided the title of this paper is probably a couple of hundred years old, but it still expresses a fundamental truth in the metals industry. This truth will be illustrated through a brief review of the major developments in the extractive metallurgy of the oxidized ores of nickel - the "laterite" ores. While the details to be discussed are for the most part specific to nickel, a close parallel with other commodities - particularly in recent years - will be apparent even to those whose interest in nickel itself is slight. Thus it is hoped that this paper will be stimulating, at the least, to anyone who is concerned with the implementation of process improvement, "Invention" in the present context means any change from "conventional" process technology that shows a reasonable chance of reducing costs, increasing revenues, or both, in the production of a commodity. This can be anything from a simple rearrangement of flowsheet steps to a completely different basis for processing. And the result may reduce costs by more efficient use of energy or labor or reagents; may increase revenues by better recovery of the primary product or by introducing the recovery of previously ignored by-products; may insure sales volume (and thereby cash flow) through higher product purity or an improved product form. "Necessity" is the perceived need to attain at least one of these classes of results. This perception of necessity, however, varies widely from management to management and from project to project.

INTRODUCTION Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Tintic Div. Burgin mine is a 725 t/d (800 stpd) lead-zinc producer, located in the east Tintic mining district, 5.6 km (3.5 miles) east of Eureka, and 130 km (80 miles) south of Salt Lake City, UT. The Burgin mining complex includes three shafts, shop, dry, and office facilities, and a 454 t/d (500 stpd) flotation concentrator. Production and ser¬vice entry to the mine is through a 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft, and a three-compart¬ment rectangular shaft. A connection with the Apex No. 2 shaft and the Burgin mine provides a second exhaust airway. Bear Creek Mining Co., Kennecott's exploration sub¬sidiary, began exploration of the Burgin mine area in 1957 with the sinking of the 335 m (1100 ft) deep No. 1 shaft. A station was cut at the 320-m (1050-ft) level of the shaft and extensive drifting, diamond drilling, and some winzing and raising confirmed the presence of a major lead-zinc ore body, the main portion of which oc¬curred below a hot saline water table. Surface facilities and the 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft were completed in 1966. Ore production has been steadily increased to 725 t/ d (800 stpd) since 1966. The collar elevation of the No. 2 production shaft is 1731 m (5678 ft) above sea level. The mine's three levels, the 1050, 1200, and 1300 are at elevations of 1414.6, 1356.4, and 1338.1 m (4587, 4450, and 4390 ft), respectively. The approximate elevation of the hot saline water table is 1382.6 m (4536 ft). The earliest production on the east Tintic mining district was from the Eureka Lilly mine in 1909. Later, in 1916, the Tintic Standard mine was discovered, and pro¬duced ores with a gross value of $80,000,000 through 1956. The Eureka Standard mine located 1.6 km (1 mile) southwest of the Burgin mine produced ore worth $12,000,000 from fissures in the Tintic quartzite along the Eureka Standard fault. Ores produced from the east Tintic mining district through 1971 are valued at $151.3 million. The production from the entire Tintic district is approximately $500 million. GEOLOGY The Burgin ore deposit occurs as replacement bodies in limestone, dolomite, and shale. Numerous fault struc¬tures and rock formations make the mine geology com¬plex. The mineralization is strongly associated with sev¬eral major geological features, which include the Ophir formation, consisting of limestone, dolomite, and shale as the favorable host rock, and the structural influence of the east Tintic thrust, the Eureka Standard and sev¬eral other significant faults. Fig. 1 depicts the Burgin 1300 level workings, a generalized configuration of the ore body, and the main geological features. Covering the quartzite, limestone, dolomite, and shale facies enclosing the Burgin ore deposit are 183 to 274 m (600 to 900 ft) of andesite. The Burgin ore consists of massive sulfide and oxide lead-zinc ores with significant silver and cadmium val¬ues. The main ore minerals are galena, cerrusite, and spalerite. Bentonites are clay materials composed principally of minerals in the montmorillonite group. Distinctive physical properties of the montmorillonite minerals are responsible for selected bentonite deposits having become the raw materials source of industrial clay products which are virtually essential to the maintenance of high production standards in the petroleum, foundry, taconite and other basic industries. These versatile materials have no suitable substitutes in either their major applications or in hundreds of speciality products, The economics of the bentonite mining industry follows closely the established pattern of other non-metallic raw materials. Aggressive competition, advanced technologies, progressive marketing techniques, substantial reserves, and vast unmeasured resources insure the continued supply of high quality bentonite to industry at bargain prices. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the geology and economics of bentonite deposits, summarize both major domestic mining districts and foreign deposits, and report significant results of research and development.

Mining is big business in Ontario. The province is Canada?s leading mining region. It consistently ranks among the top 10 jurisdictions worldwide for exploration spending, reaching about C$1 billion in 2011. More than 26 percent of all exploration and appraisal dollars spent in Canada are invested in Ontario. Minerals produced include nickel, copper, platinum group elements (PGE), cobalt, zinc, diamonds, gold and silver. It was reported that there are more than 600 mining exploration projects in the province. And, recent discoveries of chromite in northern Ontario?s Ring of Fire will add to the province?s mineral production in the coming years.

Creation of needed new resources will be accomplished mainly by imaginative and diligent geologic exploration because geologic availability is the key determinant of future mineral supply. Adequate resources of most commodities can be made available for the rest of this century and beyond if they are discovered. Thus conversion of hypothetical and speculative resources into available reserves will provide the principal challenge to earth scientists. Additional problems now compete for our attention. First is a challenge to discover more resources than have been found to date for domestic needs as world-wide demands increase exponentially and as easily found high-grade deposits are rapidly being depleted. New ways to find new types of deposits are required. Second, the United States, a resource importer, increasingly is challenged for access to foreign supplies through stiffening competition and economic or expropriation sanctions. Balancing needs for mineral supply and environmental protection is a third challenge. Geologic explorers must consider statutory as well as economic and technologic requirements, controlled access to public and private lands, competition with urban sprawl or wilderness, limitations on discovery, appraisal and mining methods, and restoration of mined areas. Finally, is the challenge to temper public and private attitudes and assure that decisions bearing on resource problems are based on comprehensive credible facts. While striving to maintain and improve the standard of living, many Americans appear to disdain and mistrust those organizations that provide their material where-withal. Meeting these challenges effectively, and in time, will require careful appraisal of the resource system and the joint efforts of industry, university, and government earth science research.

Most Newfoundland. mineral deposits can be clearly classified as within rocks formed either as accreting plate margins (ophiolitic pyrite-chalcopyrite massive sulfides such as Betts Cove, Whalesback, York Harbour, chromite at Lewis Hills, and asbestos at Baie Verte), at consuming plate margins (Kuroko-type polymetallic massive sulfides such as Buchans and Pilleys Island, porphyry-type Mo-Cu at Rencontre, fluorite at St. Lawrence), or within plates (zinc deposits at Daniels Harbour, sedimentary iron ores at Wabana, manganese in Conception Bay.) As these metallogenic patterns can be convincingly extrapolated southward into the Appalachians and northward to the Caledonides, they provide an important means of eliminating and selecting areas for particular exploration targets. Sonic criteria are described for the recognition of these environments of differing economic potential.

GEOLOGICAL NOTES The area under discussion is situated approximately 150 m north of Loraine No. 3 shaft at ± 1500 m below surface. The block being mined extends from about halfway between 50 and 52 levels to just below 48 level (see Fig. 1). The EB reefs form the lower portion of the EB zone of the Elsburg series and in the 81 line area the various conglomerate bands show the best development. Up to 18 separate reef bands are developed and the distance from the bottom conglomerate band to the top is ± 26 m. The thickness of the quartzite which forms the middling between the various reef bands varies from 0.1 to 2 m. The strike is roughly north-¬south. The reef bands are payable individually. However, owing to the steepness of the reefs and their close prox¬imity, conventional mining would prove very difficult. The nonpayable reef bands all carry varying amounts of gold and the whole area is a massive payable reef body approximately 26 m wide and 60 m high at 300 to 400 m on strike. The major structure of the area consists of a north¬-south trending syncline. The western flank of the syncline has a steep easterly dip, in places approaching the vertical. This flank cuts out against the overlying rocks of the EA zone. The latter forms a noncon¬formity with the underlying EB zone. The eastern flank of the syncline dips to the west at an average dip of 0.17 rad (10°). The 0.1 rad (6°) north-plunging syncline was sub¬jected to severe faulting. The most important are the Nos. 4 and 10 faults, both of which have a roughly north-south strike. The No. 4 fault dips to the west at an angle of 1.04 rad (60°) with a downthrow of approximately 150 m to the west. The dip of the No. 10 fault is 0.69 to 0.81 rad (40° to 50°) west, with the western block having moved 150 m updip relative to the eastern block. The EB reefs are being mined by the sublevel stoping method down from the sub-outcrop position to the cutoff against the No. 4 fault. On the downthrow side of the No. 10 fault, that is just above the 54 level, two reef bands are payable and will be mined conven¬tionally. ROCK MECHANICS From the section in Fig. 1, it can be seen that the area under consideration is surrounded by stoped-out areas. This will naturally change the stress distribution extensively. The only way to calculate the stress field for such a geometry is to use the finite element method. It was established that this method worked for the present geometry and so the method was applied to predict the stress behavior of the final geometry. From the results, it appeared that the effect of the old stopes was to destress the area. There are, however, some areas-such as the 50 and 48 north footwall haulages-which will require continuous attention. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents [ ] analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry. Three sources of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2011 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events including economic, social and political conditions that affected exploration activities, which were derived from published sources and unpublished discussions with USGS and industry specialists.

Meridian Gold Company's Royal Mt. King mine (RMK), a subsidiary of FMC Gold Company, is located approximately 40 miles east of Stockton, California on the western edge of the historic mother lode belt. Gold ore at RMK is associated with a series of northwest trending fault zones hosted in either meta-volcanic or meta-sedimentary rock types commonly referred to as greenstone sulfide and carbonaceous phyllite. Mineralogy studies show gold in both ore types to occur primarily as electrum in the form of 1 -20 um inclusions in pyrite with varying amounts of free milling gold. In carbonaceous ores, gold was not found to be closely associated with carbon. At the start of the current mining operation, three major ore resources were identified. North Pit and Gold Knoll pits were the major greenstone reserves while Skyrocket Pit contained over 60% of the total reserves as carbonaceous ore. Since North Pit and Gold Knoll were to be the first areas mined, the mill began operation in February 1989 with a flowsheet designed for greenstone ores with a carbonaceous expansion anticipated after depletion of the greenstone reserves.

Mineral extraction from sulfide ore deposits usually leads to the combined action of oxygen and water on the newly exposed ore. The result is acid mine drainage, a low pH solution of various metal sulfate salts and sulfuric acid. Paradoxically, the valuable metals dissolved in acid mine water are a liability because they are too toxic for discharge but too dilute to recover economically. The expense of compliance with water quality release standards has reduced the profitability of many mining operations. Solid phase extraction (SPE) columns have been developed to extract metals from acid mine water. These columns are designed to remove the toxic elements from water and recover the metals as purified fractions. This article describes the results of a Phase 1 bench-scale project to test the performance of the SPE columns. The tests were conducted with water collected from the abandoned Berkeley Pit copper mine in Butte, MT.

The I-35 Capital Expressway (CapEx) Central Drainage Tunnels will serve as a stormwater collection system for the forthcoming I-35 Capital Express Central reconstruction project through downtown Austin, Texas. The schematic level concept design included three tunnels, 10 to 14 ft ID, totaling 26,000 LF. Constructability reviews during design development indicated issues with the concept design including phasing of construction, conicts with future retaining walls, staging area concerns, and signicant mixed face tunneling. The design was updated to mitigate these risks. The revised design includes two tunnels, both 22-ft ID and totaling 33,000 LF, that will be mined almost entirely in rock.

The costs of an open-pit operation can be classified according to the following hierarchy : -overall cost of production (per ton of ore) -costs of basic operations and functions -costs of auxiliary operations -costs of machines and equipment -maintenance costs. Production cost is a measure of the open-pit mine performance and should be the final target of the management control. It is also a measure of the share of the mine in the processing stages.

Suboleski and King (1990) analyzed the reasons for the dramatic increase in underground coal mine productivity during the last 10 years. This paper examines whether this increase can be extended. The paper forecasts whether the mix of technological, procedural and other factors that produced the increase will change in the future. The forecast is based on the base case and spreadsheet production model described in the previous paper.

India’s most extensive renewable energy expansion program targets 280 GW of solar energy by 2030. Due to the massive generation of photovoltaic waste (expected 34,600 T by 2030), stringent recycling effort to recover metal resources from endof- life PVs is required for resource recovery, circular economy, and subsequent reduction in the environmental impact. The present study investigates the recycling potential of end-of-life silicon solar modules. The feed characterization reveals that most of the values in PV modules are concentrated in the frame (pure Al), Si wafer (72–84% Si, 9–12% Al, and 0.13–0.71% Ag), and electrical connections (Cu wire coated with Sn). The Si and Ag values in the feed were beneficiated using water fluidization, and concentrate with 90% Si and 2% Ag was attained in the underflow concentrate. Ag values were recovered in the form of AgCl by leaching in nitric acid and precipitation. After the purification step, the residue containing 99% Si can be further utilized to fabricate Si wafer and Al-Si alloy. The preliminary cost estimations suggest that the proposed process is economically viable for the recycling of solar panels with the maximum value generated from the AgCl precipitate followed by Al panels and Si wafers.

The production of high strength iron ore sinter for blast furnace iron making unit was developed by optimizing the granulometry of less than − 0.150 mm fines in sinter base mix which consists of iron ore fines (− 10 mm size with 0.150 mm: 41%), beneficiation plant jig concentrate, i.e., washed ore (− 3 + 0.150 mm size with − 0.150 mm 3 to 9%), beneficiation plant concentrate (− 0.150 mm size 97%), limestone, dolomite, coke breeze, lime, sinter return fines, direct reduced iron (DRI plant) fines, and micropellets produced from steel plant waste. The sintering process consists of preparation of base mix, mixing, and production of nodules using mixing and nodulizing drum by maintaining the optimum moisture, transferring of nodules to the sintering machine, and firing of sinter by applying optimum suction pressure. To optimize the < 0.150 mm fines in sinter base mix, the − 10-mm size iron ore fines was replaced with washed ore. The size analysis, granulation index (G index), and optimization of moisture w.r.t. sinter bed permeability were carried out by varying the washed ore addition from 0 to 55% in sinter base mix to vary the − 0.150 mm fine size. With decrease in washed ore addition from 55 to 0% in sinter base mix the finer fraction, i.e., − 0.150 mm in sinter base mix increased from 9.4 to 26.7%. Granulation (G) index increased from 1.46 to 3.10, sinter bed permeability increased from 33 to 53 Japanese Permeability Unit (JPU), and balling index increased from 1.4 to 3.0. With increase in − 0.150 mm fines in the sinter base mix from 9.4 to 26.7%, the sinter tumbler index (T.I) increased and sinter reduction degradation index (RDI) decreased. Increase in sinter strength and decrease in sinter RDI was due to increase in formation of Silico ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) phase and decrease in pore phase. The SFCA is the main bonding phase in iron ore sinter, and it provides strength to sinter. Sinter base mix with − 0.150 mm fines 18.9% (washed ore addition 25%) achieved desired sinter properties with moisture 8.0%, G index 2.44, balling index 2.3, and sinter bed permeability > 45JPU. Decreased the sinter properties with washed ore addition in sinter base mix beyond 25% due to decrease in − 0.150 mm fines in sinter base mix. Further, to improve the sinter properties with washed ore 30 to 45%, 3 to 10% beneficiation plant concentrate, i.e., − 0.150 mm fines was added to maintain the 18.9% of − 0.150 mm fines in sinter base mix. From the laboratory sintering studies, it was found that minimum 18.9% (range from 18.9 to 26.7%) − 0.150 mm fines should be maintained in the sinter base mix to achieve desired sinter properties.

"He?s an SOB, but he&apos;s my SOB." Many of us have heard this line in reference to attorneys, and can appreciate the humor. However, the thought reflects a deeper attitude that lawyers should be used for attack purposes in the legal system or the regulatory process. Often, more permitting progress can be made with tact and flexibility than with inflexible, overly aggressive strategies. Usually, administrative hearings or other litigation work to the disadvantage of the applicant. Thus, I have concerns about approaching any permitting system with a hard-line attitude. On the other hand, the project team must always be prepared to defend permit applications and present a legally adequate case at public meetings, administrative hearings, or judicial proceedings. This paper discusses a number of strategies intended to increase the probabilities for successful permitting, whether opposition is informal or highly organized.

Research was conducted to develop a simulation and animation model for an aggregate (sand and gravel) mine operation. This model can assist the mine engineers to investigate and consider the various options of haulage systems which are critical for the mine operation productivity. Discrete-event system simulation studies can be used for the typical haulage issues that mining engineers are often faced with: using truck fleet haulage, conveyor belts, or a combination of both. The simulation has identified some strengths and weaknesses in the current loading and hauling fleet of the mine, and has resulted in some suggestions for improving the system. The simulation includes animation of the operation. Animation is needed to enhance the benefit of any mine simulation model. By combining the visual power of animation with a mine simulation, a complete picture of the mine system is obtained and displayed. The mine is modeled and animated using GPSS/H® and PROOF Professional®, both of which have shown great applicability in discrete mining simulation projects.

Reserve Mining Company completed construction on a major process modification project in June of 1980. These modifications enabled Reserve to reduce and control its final iron ore pellet silica content from 9.0 20.77 percent to 5.0 50.26 percent. The paper outlines the implementation of neutron activation on-line analysis and associated computer control loops for measuring and closely controlling the silica content of the iron ore concentrate at Reserve Mining Company. It contains a general overview of Reserve&apos;s taconite processing facilities and a presentation of the theory and operation of the neutron activation analysis equipment coupled with the computer silica control loops.
