Formulation and commercial utilization of solid-waste incinerator slag by-product is the focus of this paper. Particular attention is given to iron aluminosilicate melts having compositions similar to that of nature's basalt The earth?s crust can be viewed as an environmental laboratory for predicting stability of various silicates; small-scale laboratory experiments are necessary to confirm findings there from. An ideal slag consumes flux additives at acceptable cost, is compatible with furnace refractory, flows readily from the furnace, and has physical properties suitable for its commercial utilization -all within the critical constraint that the slag is environmentally stable. Examples of successful solid waste slagging practice, including tonnage, utilization and pricing, are provided from metallurgical and waste treatment operations of North America. Rare earth elements (REEs) are crucial to green technology such as hybrid-electric vehicles, wind turbines and fluorescent light bulbs. As of 2011, China dominates the global production of REEs and is reducing its export quotas. To predict the supply of rare earths in the United States based on future supply scenarios, a web-based database and geographic visualization tool was built. Five case scenarios with varying levels of REE demand were created by varying several economic conditions including (1) international trade policy, (2) greenhouse gas regulations, (3) environmental mining regulations and (4) tech applicability ratio of REEs. The most likely scenario, which is based on current international demand levels, indicates the importance of expediting the development of extractive operations of current REE resources within the United States. The results of the different case scenarios are supported by using dynamic geographic maps indicating the location of rare earth ore (REO) resources.

Investigations were conducted with various secondary fan locations from the dead-end crosscut and with the intake air quantities varied using different auxiliary fans to control air recirculation and diesel particulate matter (DPM).

The effects of microwave treatment on the floatabilities and magnetic susceptibilities of some sulfide minerals, namely, pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite, were studied. Pure mineral samples were prepared in -425+212-µm, -212+106-µm and -106+38-µm size fractions. Microflotation and magnetic separation tests were carried out on the samples after microwave treatment at 600, 950 and 1,300 Watts for 5, 20, 60, 90, 120 and 240 seconds. The maximum temperature values of the samples were measured during the microwave treatment, and possible altera-tions on the mineral surfaces were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The effects of microwave treatment are discussed based on the result of microflotation and magnetic separation tests. The results revealed that pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena were heated very quickly and that their surface temperatures reached ~700° to 900°C, while the temperature of sphalerite reached only ~130°C. The floatability of pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena were decreased when microwave energy and the duration of treatment were increased, owing to oxidation of the mineral surfaces caused by relatively high temperature. As expected, there was no change in the floatability of sphalerite. The magnetic properties of pyrite and chalcopyrite were improved by the increase in microwave energy and the duration of treatment to such an extent that 90% of the feed separated as magnetic product. But no change was observed in the magnetic properties of galena and sphalerite.

ntroduction As the gold mining industry continues to develop in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, more deposits will undoubtedly be discovered that will be amenable to development. The Pueblo Viejo gold mine is currently in operation in the Dominican Republic. It has become an important component of that country's economy. Pueblo Viejo output is important to the government as a foreign currency earner. It is also said to be among the world's more successful gold mines. But, while Pueblo Viejo is successful, no other major gold discoveries have been made in recent years. Therefore, alluvial deposits of gold have caught the attention of geologists on the Island of Hispaniola. In the past four years, exploration and investigation of alluvial deposits have been initiated in both the Dominican Republic and Haiti. This type of activity is expected to continue over the next few years. Alluvial gold mining is rudimentary gold washing, done mostly by farmers. It is an old tradition, dating back at least 100 years, and is done by small, independent, or community farming villages in the mountains and plains of the Dominican Republic. Investigations in the DR Recently, alluvial gold investigations have been undertaken in well known locations of the Dominican Republic. One is in the Villa Altagracia area. Here, the terraces and gravels of the Haina River basin were examined, test-pitted, and assayed by Minera Altagracia, a local Dominican mining group. Results led to a new investigation by the state-owned Rosario Dominicana (RD), the company that mines the gold at Pueblo Viejo. Rosario tested areas previously investigated by Minera Altagracia. RD could not define the type of concentration that could justify an industrial-scale type of exploitation. The Haina River placers are located in the flats and valleys of Central Dominican Republic. They are classified as small-scale type of operations where local cooperatives can do the traditional gold washing. It is not now considered a dredgable project for a mining company. The next alluvial gold investigation was undertaken by the Dominican Department of Mines and others in an area of some 700 km2 (270 sq miles) in the northeast near Miches. Farmers have been washing gold in streams and excavating pits in various areas, particularly La Mina and have made a living. Government geologists panned several hundred streams and river tributaries. They also washed material from deep excavations. The results, however, were negative insofar as locating alluvial gold concentrations suitable for large-scale or industrial-scale exploitation. The most favorable locations were the terraces along the Jayán and Cuarón Rivers in the area of Miches. But the grade od concentration is poor. Actually, only traces of gold were found in these

"With increasing demand for steel and depletion of high-grade iron ore deposits, more research efforts are being directed toward extending the life of existing ore reserves and developing technology to treat low-grade iron ore resources. Among all the reported technologies, biotechnologies in mineral processing – specifically bioleaching and microbially induced flotation – have emerged to be considered as low-cost, environmentally friendly potential alternatives to many of the current mineral processing techniques. This paper provides a comprehensive review of current research on the use of microorganisms for iron ore beneficiation and, further, discusses the applicability of bioleaching, bioflotation and bioflocculation for the beneficiation of low-grade iron ores.IntroductionIncreasing global demand for raw materials has led to diminishing resources of high-grade iron ore. As a result, the mining and utilization of low-grade hematite, limonite, specularite, siderite and goethite ores have attracted more and more attention. However, these types of iron ores are of complex paragenesis and fine disseminated grain size, and often contaminated by phosphorus in the form of solid solution. The distribution of phosphorus throughout the iron mineral crystals prevents the effective use of physical separation techniques, and these complex ores are at present largely untapped due to a lack of cost-effective and efficient processing methods. Chemical leaching and roasting-magnetic separation approaches have been mainly tested only on the laboratory scale and are all either cost prohibitive or ineffective when used on low-grade complex iron ores."

P. Mousset-Jones I found the article most interesting and timely. I consider it imperative that mine case studies like this one are undertaken and published so that the practicing mining engineer and geologist can obtain a better idea of what is the preferred estimation and grade control technique to use, given the site-specific geology, grade distribution, etc. Mining companies, with operating gold mines, need to be encouraged to either initiate such a study in-house or support a research project by financing a graduate student at a local university. The latter method is preferable since it not only provides research support but also an excellent training opportunity for young mining engineers and geologists. Ideally, what is needed is exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and mine production data that can then be used to assess the efficiency of different estimation and grade control methods by comparing the results obtained using the drill/blasthole data with the actual production data. It is hoped that more mining companies will realize that the rewards from this kind of research greatly outweigh the sometimes perceived problem with releasing data to a university. I noticed that the authors used the blasthole data to represent the actual values, the validity of which relies heavily on the two key assumptions with regards to blasthole assays and in-pit ore-waste selection procedures. Could the authors comment in more detail on these assumptions and what criteria they used to check the validity of the assumptions? Since the article was published, have the authors had the opportunity to compare their estimates with the actual production data? It would be interesting to compare other estimation methods with OK and IK. For example, how well did the polygonal method used at the mine compare with the results given in the paper? I would like to mention that B.L. Kwa completed a similar study (Kwa and Mousset-Jones, 1986) using exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and production data from the Alligator Ridge mine in Nevada. The study compared a variety of estimation methods, including IK, and the final results are shown in Fig. 1. The IK method exhibits the smallest difference between estimated and production results and is closely followed by the indicator moving window (Ind MW) method. Reply by Y.C. Kim We do concur with Professor Mousset-Jones with respect to the merit of such case studies performed at a local university. In answer to his request for comment on the validity of the two key assumptions made in our paper, we can only say that these are reasonable assumptions that are very difficult to validate. The assumption of blasthole assays being accurate can be partially validated by a careful analysis of the nugget component of blasthole variograms. The assumption that the in-pit ore-waste selection procedure in use was an effective one can only be validated through comparison between the mine estimates of ounces of gold versus the actual recovered ounces of gold at the mill. Neither one of these two assumptions has been validated to date due to several reasons. For example, the mine went through a change in management since the study. Similarly, no compelling reasons have been presented to perform detailed variogram analysis of the blasthole data. We do, however, believe that the obtained results (i.e., indicator kriging performs better than OK in a highly skewed deposit) will remain the same in relative terms, regardless of how valid these two assumptions may be. The most recent comparative study by D. S. Lindsey of the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology also shows a similar ranking between ordinary kriging versus probability kriging, which is an extended version of indicator kriging. R.K. Leininger, N.R. Hasenmueller, and D.D. Carr The content of the paper by V. Rajaram does not fulfill the expectations of the title. But Rajaram submitted the article in October 1983, and he could not have foreseen the numerous developments that would occur before his paper was published more than two years later. Nevertheless, Rajaram failed to mention the interest in oil shale development in southern Indiana beginning in late 1979 and continuing through the present as a result of special financial encouragement of three oil shale projects in May and August 1984 by the Indiana Energy Development Board and the Indiana Corp. for Science and Technology. A session at the 1985 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium in Lexington, KY, Nov. 18-20, 1985, gave the current status of oil shale developments in the eastern United States. Speakers at this session reported on the three Indiana projects. First, Gary D. Aho, Cliffs Engineering Inc., spoke on a feasibility study by Cliffs Engineering and Allis Chalmers for a site-specific pilot plant using the Allis Chalmers process. The plant site is in Clark County, IN, on property of the Midwest Energy Resources Co. The project is funded by $240,908 each from the Indiana Energy Development Board/Corp. for Science and Technology (EDB/CST) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) and $120,454 from the corporate sponsors (total $602,270). Completion is scheduled for mid-1986. Next, Edwin M. Piper, Stone and Webster Engineering Corp., discussed the American Syn-Crude/Indiana Oil Shale Project. This effort followed the completion of two smaller projects funded by the Indiana EDB/ CST: "Testing of Indiana Oil Shale in a Petrosix Pilot Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $50,000) and "Assessment of the Petrosix Process for an Indiana Shale Oil Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $100,000). The status at the time of the report at the Oil Shale Symposium was that a request for an extension of time for securing nonfederal support had been submitted to the US Synfuels Corp. The proposal included building an 11-m (36-ft) diam retort in southeastern Indiana to process the New Albany Shale and to produce 366 m3 (2300 bbl) of shale oil per day by the PETROSIX process. The Indiana EDB/CST had contracted with Stone and Webster at $401,100 from EDB/CST and $245,835 from Stone and Webster for activities to advance the project in the negotiations with Synfuels Corp. At the time of the report, this project was the only eastern oil shale proposal that was still on the agenda of the Synfuels Corp. As a result of Congressional action in late December 1985, federal support from the Synfuels Corp. is no longer possible. Finally, Victor H. Carr, Eastern Shale Research Corp., described his firm's project, which is jointly supported by DOE ($227,749) and the Indiana EDB/ CST ($73,850) and is entitled "Feasibility Study to Determine Suitability of an In-Situ Process to Recover Hydrocarbons from Eastern Shale." An area in Scott County, IN, had been chosen, but not a specific 9 x 15-m (30 x 50-ft) site. One burn of a small in situ retort is contemplated as part of the project. Besides these three projects, several reports on shale research were presented. Joseph Damukaitis, American Syn-Crude Corp., reported that a pilot plant using the hydrogenation-extraction (H-E) process (described at the 1984 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium) was 94% built and would go through shakedown with oil shale but would then shift mechanical devices to process coal mine waste. Current status of research on the HYTORT process was then presented by Raymond C. Rex, Jr. Oil shale beneficiation research at the University of Alabama/Minerals Research Institute was reported by R. Bruce Tippin. Scott D. Carter discussed continued research on fluidized-bed retort¬ing of shale at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory. Carl E. Roosmagi of DOE, Morgantown, reported on the oil shale research at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC) laboratory. Henry J. Gomberg, Ann Arbor Nuclear Inc., discussed "Radiation Combined with Donor Solvents for Extraction and Up-Grading of Kerogen." Aurora M. Rubel and coauthor Eileen Davis presented results of research at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory under the title "The Effect of Shale Particle Size on the Products from the Bench Scale Fixed Bed Steam Pyrolysis of Kentucky Sunbury Shale." Lastly, Maria Rockwell, Technical University of Nova Scotia, presented "Processing and Up-Grading of Low Grade Nova Scotia Oil Shale for Potential Use." A review of shale oil prospects by Gerald Parkinson in Chemical Engineering for Feb. 3, 1986, covers both western and eastern projects and includes a report that the US DOE is funding a few relatively small projects; most of the fiscal 1986 budget of $12 million for shale oil is for fundamental research. Projects include a $3.2 million three-year contract with Hycrude Corp. (Chicago) for development of the HYTORT process and a $1.2 million three-year contract with the University of Alabama's Mineral Resources Institute on beneficiation of eastern oil shale by froth flotation. The report incorrectly states that current projects include a total investment of $466 million in a pair of 18-month technical and economic feasibility studies for proposed projects in southern Indiana. This study presents a method for recovering valuable metals and synthesizing anhydrite from steel slag using sulfuric acid leaching and solvent extraction. The process achieved high leaching efficiencies for V, Ti, Fe, and Mg, and produced anhydrite with 93.09% purity. The leachate was further processed to separate and recover V, Ti, Fe, and Mg using selective stripping and precipitation methods, offering a sustainable approach to steel slag utilization.

Several universities and colleges in Australia, Canada and the United States, recognized the need to establish or reorganize geoscience programs at the vocational and two-year technical levels. To accomplish this, a cooperative study with industry in one state or province from each country was initiated. These include Tasmania in Australia, British Columbia in Canada and Alaska in the United States. The objective of this work was to develop a diversified geoscience educational model at the two-year technical, vocational and continuing education level that provides the source from which any nation can draw the proper educational tools to create a new geoscience program, modernize an existing program or strengthen a weak program. More than 100 mineral industry organizations provided information regarding their specific training needs for support personnel. The data gathered have been used to identify training areas for semi-skilled, skilled and technical personnel in geochemical mineral exploration. These included geological, geochemical, environmental and computer skills. With the areas of major educational need defined for geochemical exploration, an educational field skills model was developed for the three levels of training. The international need for a study of this type was recognized as early as 1980, following numerous contacts from domestic and foreign geoscience educators regarding the structure and success of training within the University of Alaska Fairbanks Mining Extension program, located in Fairbanks. Contacts, correspondence and visits included educators from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mozambique and the conterminous United States. The need was magnified between 1985 and 1989 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, when an attempt failed at initiating and developing a two-year geoscience vocational-technology program leading to an Associate of Science degree.

Introduction Many old underground mines have been developed extensively into reserves requiring large numbers of workers to maintain and rehabilitate lengthy track haulages and/or belt conveyor systems. Often, large numbers of fans are required to maintain minimal airflows in areas where poor conditions and huge leakages prevail. Problems that beset one such coal mine and projects undertaken to restore it to potential profitability are presented. Brief history The Vesta No. 5 mine was opened in 1908. Drift development began near the Monongahela River, which was the primary avenue for shipping metallurgical coal to coke ovens in Pittsburgh. Over the ensuing 75 years, the main haulage entries were developed a distance of 16.1 km (10 miles) to the present mining area. Track haulage was used to transport coal from working sections to the river loading facility. As haulage distance and areas of high water influx increased, management decided, in 1973, to construct an underground conveyor belt system. The project spanned 36 months and culminated in a system of 22 flights, ranging from 205.7 to 1767.8 m (675 to 5800 ft) long. Six intake and eight return entries were developed as the mains were advanced. These entries provided adequate ventilating capacity over the years, but as extensive gob areas progressed and roof conditions deteriorated, the entries became inaccessible and more resistant to airflow. By 1981, five fans were being used to circulate 943.9 m3/s (555.5 cfm) of air through the mine. An average of 6440 t (7100 st) were produced from 20.8 continuous miner unit shifts and 2.7 longwall unit shifts each day in 1981. The ratio of support to production personnel was 1.94. To maintain the outby 16.1 km (10 miles) of haulage, 110 personnel were used. The average cost per ton was $43.54 ($39.58 per st), resulting in excessive bottom-line losses. The mine possessed a rather promising reserve, mostly in lease, of good quality, medium-sulfur metallurgical coal, but it also had a number of formidable operating problems. Operating problems Contributing factors toward relatively low productivity and high costs were the conditions of the track haulage, conveyor, and ventilation systems. INTRODUCTION Recent advances in high-pressure water jet technology can be effectively employed in mining and tunneling. The new equipment is based on available industrial hardware such as pumps, nozzles, and rotary swivels and seals, and is compatible with present mining and tunneling techniques. Principal advantages of water-jet assisted cutting relative to standard cutting are higher production rates, lower dust levels, and reduced fines. When used on rock and coal miners, water jets mean that relatively smaller and cheaper machines can be purchased. If properly applied, the combined effect is lower cost and significantly improved health and safety. While commercial use of high-pressure water blast cutting and extraction of rock (and concrete) already has a firm foothold in Europe, application of this new technique is just beginning in America. This paper begins with current American applications of high-pressure water jets for drills, for slotting and channeling machines, and then discusses the emerging technology for initiating rock failure in conjunction with drag bits on coal plows, continuous miners and boom-type miners (roadheaders). The focus of this paper is use of high-pressure water jets for cutting rock. High-pressure water jet cutting utilizes water above 70 MPa and currently reaches to 300 MPa and above. Pulsating high-gradient magnetic separation (PHGMS) of fine hematite from tailings was studied using a pilot PHGMS separator to investigate the possibility of its application in industry. The results of this investigation indicate that PHGMS is effective for recovering fine hematite from the tailings and greatly improved the separation performance compared with the conventional high-gradient magnetic separation at the same conditions. By applying the pilot separator with a 1-mm rod matrix to a tailings containing 28.76% Fe, a concentrate assaying 54.35% Fe with 35.89% recovery was achieved. It was found that the separation performance of the pilot separator closely correlates with the main pulsating parameters, i.e., pulsating stroke and frequency. It was also found that a change in the wire diameter of the rod matrix from 2 to 1 mm causes a weak drop in concentrate grade but results in a considerable rise in recovery. This finding proves that the improved performance achieved by the pilot separator is attributed to the pulsating of slurry and to the use of a 1-mm rod matrix. When the first commercial SLon-2500 PHGMS separator with a 1-mm rod matrix was applied to recover fine hematite from the tailings, the results duplicated those achieved with the pilot PHGMS separator.

A site-specific blasting model has been developed for the Asarco Mission mine. The main inputs to the model are the in-situ block size (F80), the post-blast fragmentation (P80) and the intact tensile strength (To). The output from the model is the specific blast energy (ESE). Modern techniques are being used to obtain the input parameters for the site-specific blast fragmentation model. In particular, image processing software is used to obtain both the in-situ block size and the post-blast fragmentation, and the Schmidt hammer is used to obtain the tensile strength at numerous locations throughout the rock mass. An initial model was developed using five test shots in one area of the mine that contains Argillite and is relatively homogeneous. This also included calibrating Schmidt hammer readings against actual Brazilian tensile measurements. The model for Argillite will be updated as more tests are conducted, and the model will be extended to the other four primary rock types at the Asarco Mission mine.

As a preventive action, the geotechnical department at the mine analyzed the original topography overlying a conveyor tunnel at the mine. Several dewatering drains were installed to intercept water collecting from an old lakebed. Subsequently, 20 steel arches were installed to provide additional support in an area of tunnel where original geological mapping indicated Type IV rock. This project was completed ontime with no loss to production. Construction schedules had to be developed to half hour precision, to accommodate the installation.

Golden Sunlight Mines Inc. operates an open-pit gold mine and cyanidation plant about 11km (7 miles) northeast of Whitehall, MT. Golden Sunlight is a subsidiary of Placer Dome US Inc. Mining is accomplished with conventional open pit drilling, blasting and hauling methods. The mining rate is about 102 kt/d (113,000 stpd). Gold occurs as fine-grained disseminations in a pipe-shaped breccia and in immediately adjacent country rock. The ore body is low grade, averaging 2 g/t (0.059 oz per st) of gold. The metallurgical plant uses conventional carbon-in-pulp (CIP) technology. Daily throughput averages 6.5 kt (7000 st). Recoveries are enhanced through a sand tailing retreatment facility while a preaeration process reduces operating costs. The low grade ore dictates that maximum mill throughput at the desired grind size be maintained. Therefore, in October 1988, an Armco Autometrics (now Denver Autometrics) particle size monitor (PSM) 400 was commissioned. The PSM 400 is an on-line instrument. It measures particle size and percent solids in a slurry stream. The PSM pulls its own sample, deareates the sample and passes it through diametrically opposed ultrasonic sensors. The unit uses ultrasonic sound to measure the deareated slurry stream's particle size and percent solids.

Continued market pressure on the US coal industry was the overriding factor affecting developments in underground mining in 1986. An oversupply of coal in the spot market kept prices low throughout the year and caused a number of operations to close their doors. Operators stepped up their efforts to improve productivity at existing operations. They made technology advances and improved their relations with employees. A continuing market-related development during 1986 was the divesting of coal properties and operations by major oil companies, which were faced with economic pressures in both the oil and coal industries. Further increases in contract mining production resulted as some larger operators were unable to compete in a tough economic environment. Longwall mining is still seen by many as the technology that will provide the necessary productivity to remain cost-effective. But the number of active faces in the US declined in 1986, as reserves were depleted and economics forced some closures. At the first Longwall USA meeting in June, much attention was placed on improved technology, as electro-hydraulic controls for roof supports gained acceptance. Other recent developments include shearer initiation of roof supports, automatic horizon control for shearer drums, and collection and storage of machine data for predicting maintenance requirements. The government and academic communities continued their research on dust control at longwall faces. Jankowski, Kissel, and Daniel, (October 1986, Mining Engineering), gave an overview of progress in longwall dust control. And Mukherjee, Singh and Jayarman (November 1986, Mining Engineering), recommended design guidelines for improving water spray systems for dust control. Surface subsidence Increasing attention is being given to surface subsidence. This is primarily because of longwall mining and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. Improved methods of prediction of surface subsidence, especially computerized methods, are being continually developed. Mining engineering faculty at major universities such as Virginia are helping develop public policy and regulations concerning subsidence. As part of this effort, Unrug and Johnson identified major subsidence areas of Western Kentucky. Peng and Chen (February 1986, Mining Engineering), gave an overview of history and research of surface subsidence. And Elifrits and Aughenbaugh, (February 1986, Mining Engineering), discussed effects of moisture variations and overburden on subsidence. This research culminated in a Symposium on Surface Subsi¬dence at the SME 1986 Fall Meeting in St. Louis and the 2nd Workshop on Surface Subsidence at West Virginia University. Ground control in coal mining continued to be an item of major research interest. Some 30 papers were presented at the 5th International Conference on Ground Control in Mining at West Virginia University. And six sessions were related to coal mining at the 27th US Symposium on Rock Mechanics at the University of Alabama. At the 4th Annual Workshop, Generic Mineral Technology Center, Mine Systems Design and Ground Control emphasized efforts of the participating universities to improve ground control. Peng and Chiang summarized results of studying support capacity and roof behavior with longwall shield supports. And Unrug, Johnson, and Nandy analyzed the process of deterioration of shale roof in a case study of a room-and-pillar coal mine. The importance of geologic conditions in determining mining productivity is receiving increased attention in coal mine design in the US. Mullenex related, through case studies, the benefits to be derived through analyzing the depositional system of coalbeds as an integral part of mine design. Improved technology in this area was related by Lloyd, Semborski, and Stolarczyk. They discussed a case study of using radio imaging to indicate coal-seam discontinuities in advance of mining. Improved coal mining technology in general is being researched more heavily, to help improve US coal competitiveness. However, much of this research and development process has yet to be widely implemented. Equipment manufacturers are devoting more resources to development of continuous-haulage systems, mobile roof-supports, mine-monitoring systems, and predictive-maintenance systems using computers to extract machine data.

A series of full scale laboratory linear rock cutting tests was carried out with a long bladed single disc cutter (292 mm diameter, 11mm wide constant cross-section blade) on dry and water saturated sandstone blocks using a linear rock cutting machine (LRCM). The muck collected from the cutting tests has been analyzed to establish a link with the specific energy (SE) of the operation. Coarseness index (CI), a non dimensional parameter, has been found to be a useful indicator of the relative efficiency of the cutting operation. An inverse relationship of the form SE = k CI-n is observed between SE and CI with very high CI usually corresponding with the lowest values of SE. The power n of the relationship for both dry and saturated rock tests is much less than the values found in the previous studies using constant cross section disc cutters and is believed to be dependent on the strength of the rock and the cutter type used. Although the average CI is found to be lower for saturated rock than for dry rock, at the same time saturated rock cutting is found to be less energy intensive (in terms of SE) than dry rock cutting. Moderate correlation exists between the production rate or yield and the SE of the cutting operation for both dry and saturated rock, which can provide some useful information about the field production rate discounting the effect of discontinuities in the rock mass.

Given the recent focus on powered haulage incidents within the U.S. mining sector, an appraisal of collision avoidance/warning systems (CXSs) through the lens of the research literature is timely. This paper aims to evaluate the maturity of CXS technology through the application of a technology readiness assessment (TRA) to research literature identified by systematic search methods. Results indicate that much of the evidence for CXS performance is at lower levels of maturity: that is, components and prototypes tested in a laboratory and in relevant environments. Less evidence exists for CXS performance at higher levels of maturity — that is, systems evaluated within operational environments — despite the existence of commercial products in the marketplace. This lack of evidence at higher maturity levels within the scientific literature highlights the need for more peer-reviewed research to evaluate CXS technologies. Additionally, results of the review reveal that most of the literature relevant to CXS technologies is focused on vehicle-to-vehicle interactions, which contrasts with haul truck fatal accident statistics that indicate most are due to vehicle-to-environment interactions, such as traveling through a berm. Lastly, the relatively small number and segmented nature of relevant studies suggest there is a need for more incremental research that would better facilitate the improvement of CXS technologies. This progression could be achieved through continued long-term interest and support for CXS technology research.
