This U.S. Bureau of Mines publication is a compilation of fundamental cyanide chemistry data obtained through review of the scientific literature. It includes information on thermodynamics and chemical equilibria, ultraviolet-visible and infrared spectra, and the chemistry and photochemistry of cyanide, chemical species derived from cyanide, and metal cyanide species. It also includes guidance on the use of the data for solving practical problems in precious metals applications. This publication is intended mainly for use as a reference by personnel in the precious metals industry and regulatory agencies, and other cyanide users, to provide comprehensive information on cyanide chemistry. The document should assist in the formulation of effective policies for cyanide control in the construction, operation, and closure phases of precious metals mining and metallurgical operations. In addition, the data in this publication will be useful in other contexts, such as dealing with industrial cyanide usage, cyanide-containing wastes and associated environmental problems.

A power-line proximity-warning (PLPW) system must have a high probability of detection (alarm activation at a specific distance), low probability of false alarm, and minimal set-up and maintenance. Tests of electric-field sensors have not demonstrated a dependable alarm distance. Alternative sensing methods such as microwave radar, optical radar, and sonar can meet the requirements by direct measurement of the range from the boom to the power line. Suitable microwave techniques include RF pulse, chirp FM/CW, and baseband pulse. Baseband-pulse radar has adequate range capability and does not require expensive microwave components. The radar cross section of a power-transmission cable is adequate for its detection optical-radar systems based upon LEDs and photodiodes are inexpensive, but can achieve only marginal performance in this application because of their limited modulation bandwidth. Since laser diodes and cryogenically cooled photosensors must be used to achieve the desired range resolution, the cost of an optical-radar system is greater than that of a microwave radar system. Sonar systems are feasible, but are not as precise and cost at least as much as baseband-pulse-radar systems. The performance of both optical-radar and sonar systems is degraded by dirt, necessitating the inclusion of a "windshield wiper.' Baseband radar appears well suited to the PLPW application. The cost of a baseband-pulse radar PLPW system is expected to be comparable to that of an electric-field PLPW system. Development and testing of an experimental model are therefore recommended.

There are three researches upon the specific heat of water vapor by the method of explosion that are sufficiently advanced in technique and suitable in plan to justify careful study of their results , with the double purpose of fixing the best available experimental values and indicating the attainable accuracy of the method. These three researches comprise the work of Pier , Bjerrum , and Siegel.5 The work of earlier date than Pier's suffers from obvious inaccuracy of measurement , while the experiments more recent than Siegel's , such as those of Womersley6 , of Bone and his collaborators , and of Maxwell and Wheeler , 8 are for the most part not well designed for the accurate determination of the heat capacities in question . Some of the errors to which they are especially subject have been discussed by David and by David and Thorp.

The Old Dominion Co, at Globe, Ariz., like the: Phelps Dodge Corporation with which it is closely allied, considers safety a major operating problem. Safety is fostered by this company in consideration of both the humanitarian and economic aspects; the officials, take pride in promoting the welfare of employees, and the management has found that the safest way is the most eco¬nomical and that unless an organization is operated economically it can not continue to exist successfully. In planning and operating any safety, organization, terry things must be taken into consideration because an Enterprise can not be operated solely for safety any more than it can for any other single part of the operations. All work must be planned and executed for the common interest.

The Magna mill is 19 miles west of Salt Lake City on the routes of the Lincoln and Victory highways, and the Arthur plant is 1 mile west of the Magna mill. Both are on the main road west of the town of Magna and east of the town of Garfield.

Greensand, which is widely distributed in the Eastern United States, was produced in 1975 only by Inversand Co., a subsidiary of Hungerford & Terry, Inc., near Clayton, N.J. Production and sales information are not available for publication. Raw greensand produced by the company was sold for agricultural use as a soil conditioner. Processed greensand was used by manufacturers as filter media in equipment for the removal of manganese, iron and other elements from water. The University of Delaware received a grant of $17,051 from the Bureau of Mines early in 1976 to continue its studies of the effectiveness of greensand in removing metallic contaminants from waste waters.

Air pollution control regulation$ already implemented or being considered for implementation require substantial investment of capital to remove the sulfur oxides from copper, lead, and zinc smelter gases. There will be an attendant increase in production costs and possibly an associated increase in the price of these metals to the consumer. The total investment and any resultant metal price increase will depend upon the control regulations that ultimately will be adopted by the individual States. Controversy has arisen between the metals industry and governmental control agencies regarding the status of stack gas desulfurization technology and the ability of industry to control sulfur oxide emissions to the degree proposed by some of the more stringent regulations currently under consideration. This paper evaluates the problems involved in achieving various degrees of control over smelter sulfur oxide emissions and the technology available to accomplish the task of assuring clean air. The estimated cost of compliance is reviewed for the copper, zinc, and lead industries, but principal at tent ion is given to the copper situation.

7253. Arkhangelsky, A. D. Geological Results of the General Magnetometric and Gravimetric Surveys of the U.S.S.R. (in Russian). Internat. Geol. Cong., Rep. of the 17th Sess., Moscow-Leningrad, 1937, vol. 1, Moscow, 1939, pp. 241-250. Geophysical methods have been used in the U.S.S.R. to study geological problems. Such is the case of the general magnetometric and gravimetric surveys made jointly by the Main Physical Observatory, Main Office of Geodesy and Cartography, Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, and Main Office of Geophysical Prospecting. Some institutions supplied the data, others processed them. Geological interpretation was made by the author. (1) Regional magnetic anomalies in the plains of the U.S.S.R. are traceable to the folded substratum overlain by sedimentary rocks; these anomalies promise to yield data characterizing the substratum in respect to strike and depth. Anomalies in European U.S.S.R. suggest that the pre-Cambrian -substratum of the East European plateau consists of elements of different ages. In the most ancient of them, the main strike of the folding is almost latitudinal; in the younger ones, the folding is oriented in the meridian. (2) The Faye and Bouguer gravity anomalies are caused primarily by differences in the density of rocks composing the upper crust and by unknown processes producing changes of density at depth; these processes are not connected with isosiatic movements. The anomalies in the European and adjoining Asiatic U.S.S.R. promise to indicate the volume of the pre-Cambrian massif of the east-European plateau and to clarify the interrelations between the Ural, Tian-Shan, and Donetz Basin folding systems, as well as between the Dnieper-Donetz depression and the mid-European depression. - V. Electrical arcing injuries are the most common form of electrical injury in mining. MSHA data show that 381 "non-contact electric arc burn" injuries occurred in the mining industry from 1996 - 2005. A more detailed study of data from 1990-2001 showed that five types of apparatus - circuit breakers, conductors, nonpowered hand tools, electrical meters and test leads, and connectors and plugs were involved in two-thirds of the lost workday injuries. Many of the protections from electrical arcing injury available to workers in other industries stem from the application of National Fire Protection Association Standard 70E - Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace (NFPA 70E). NFPA 70E is a generally accepted industry guideline document, but excludes underground mining from its scope. Many of its practices and procedures, however, can be applied in the mining workplace to supplement the existing electrical safety requirements of Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations. This paper describes how NFPA 70E can be applied to mining workplaces after an analysis of the mine power system electrical arcing hazards has been completed (and Hazard/Risk Categories determined) using the tables from NFPA 70E or the calculation method as described in IEEE 1584. NFPA 70E can then be used to determine the levels and types of personal protective equipment (PPE) needed to protect miners against burn injuries. Appropriate lockout and tagout (LOTO) procedures for use in the mining industry are also described. Suggestions for better selection of electrically-rated hand tools are included. Recommendations for electrical meter selection and use based on transient withstand capability are also discussed.

Improve the Bureau-developed system for locating and communicating with miners trapped underground following a mine disaster. Approach Include in the wireless system a portable second-generation transceiver that is more reliable, compact, easier to deploy and operate, and ruggedized to withstand a mine environment. How It Works In an emergency, the new transceiver is snapped onto a caplamp battery for power. (Normally the 1 1/2-pound transceiver is either carried by the miner or is strategically located in the mine.) Its antenna wire, coiled inside the transceiver container, is removed and deployed in a roughly square configuration around a coal pillar or on the mine floor. A survey of pillar conditions was carried out at 21 operating limestone mines that use the room-and-pillar method. The surveyed pillars were all located in rock that was classified as “Good” to “Very Good” using the RMR rock mass classification system. The average pillar width was 14.5m and the width to height ratio varied between 0.53 and 3.52. Pillar conditions were rated using a visual rating system that accounts for the effect of geological structures as well as stress related fracturing. Nine cases of pillar instability were recorded. Pillar instabilities were typically limited to individual pillars or small groups of pillars within an otherwise stable layout. Local geological structures such as inclined discontinuities or weak bedding planes contributed to instability in seven of nine cases that were observed. Elevated pillar stresses contributed to instability in the two remaining cases. All the unstable pillars observed had width-to-height ratios of less than 1.5. It is concluded that pillar instability is most likely to be caused by unfavorable geological structures in pillars with width to height ratios of less than 1.5. Stress related instability such as rib spalling becomes more prevalent when the average pillar stress approaches approximately 20 MPa.

Coal has been mined in the central Appalachian coalfields of southern West Virginia, western Virginia, and eastern Kentucky for more than a century. The dwindling reserve base consists in large part of coal that would have been considered unmineable by earlier generations. Nearly every current operation is working on a property where coal has been extracted in the past, from seams either above, below, or both. NIOSH is conducting research aimed at helping mine planners prevent hazardous conditions due to multiple seam interactions. To-date, more than 300 case histories have been collected from underground mines, mainly from central Appalachia. This paper focuses on several of the more challenging situations that have been encountered, including: • Room-and-pillar development 20 ft (6 m) beneath full extraction workings at a depth of 1,000 ft (300m) of cover (Virginia) • Pillar recovery 45 ft above full extraction workings at 900 ft (270 m) of cover (Virginia) • Near-simultaneous room-and-pillar mining with pillar recovery with 40 ft (12 m) of interburden and 1,500-2,000 ft (450-600 m) of cover (Kentucky) • Longwall mining directly beneath main entries in overlying seams (West Virginia) • Some of these operations have been highly successful in overcoming the challenges, others less so. The lessons learned from their experience will help ensure that these and similar difficult reserves can be mined safely.

Low-cost hydroelectric energy in the Pacific Nortnwest has been an important factor in the development of a ferroalloy industry. Eleven companies, employing approximately 1,000 persons, produce about 116,000 tons (1954-58 average) annually of ferrosilicon, ferrochromium, ferromanganese, ferrophosphorus, silicomanganese, and ferronickel. About 7,500 tons (1954-58 average) of these ferroalloys is consumed in the Pacific Northwest States of Washington and Oregon; the rest is used principally in other western and mid-western markets. In 1959, the Bureau of Mines began a study to determine the current status and to evaluate the potential of the ferroalloy industry in the Pacific Northwest. The Bureau gathered information from operating alloy plants in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana; from published materials; and from consumers of ferroalloys.

The purpose of the study was to 1) examine the social and economic impacts of surface mine blasting in relation to variations in conditions of terrain and geology, population density and type, levels of ground motion and air blast; 2) consider technical, legal and government policy issues; and 3) examine the potential, nature and extent of surface mine blasting impacts and its regulations upon both communities and surface mining companies. Phase One designed the empirical research and technical analyses of Phase Two, focused upon surface coal mining and quarrying in the Eastern U.S. Several broad conclusions are evident: 1) blasting is not the major issue for communities or surface mine companies; 2) while the number of instances of severe cracking or annoyance are relatively small, the impact can be severe for individuals immediately involved; 3) blasting/drilling cost curves tend to rise significantly at intervals below 1.0 particle velocity, in/sec, dependent upon the size of a permit area and the size of a mine; and 4) the legal, complaint, cost and density analyses do not suggest the need for a general lowering of present regulations.

In accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, and the Linde Air Products Co., an investigation was made at the Bureau Explosives Testing Station, Bruceton, Pa., to develop suitable test methods for evaluating the performance and sensitivity characteristics of liquid-oxygen explosives. This report presents the results of the investigation. The unique nature of liquid-oxygen explosives necessitated both modification of standard techniques and development of entirely new test methods. The latter requirement was due to the fact that differences exist in the kind of information that must be developed for studying relative safety and performance properties of these explosives compared to that of fixed explosives.

The aim of this program was to develop a reliable and meaning-ful basts for assessing certain safety aspects, namely fire and, in particular, toxicity hazards of articles employed in underground coal mining operations. This investigation was centered on the thermal oxidative degradation of "pure" ingredients used specifically in the formulation of conveyor beltings. To achieve this goal all products formed on thermal oxidative degradation of the materials studied were analyzed, identified I and the amount of each individual species present was determined quantitatively on a weight of product per weight of material basis. The weight/weight data thus obtained can then be factorized to reflect the relative toxicity of each individual species present, using for example the Threshold Limit Values adopted by the American Conference of Governmental and Industrial Hygienists, whereby an overall "toxicity index" can be arrived at which makes it possible to compare the different potential formulation components in a quantitative manner insofar as their "toxicity" is concerned. Furthermore, knowing the off-gassing characteristics of the commonly used additives I their contribution to the product mix obtained from actual belting can be postulated. Conversely, from the species obtained on thermal oxidative degradation of conveyor belts the type and to a degree the content of additives can be deduced. Based on the se data meaningful regulations governing the material selection for underground use can be developed. For these studies a quiescent system at 370°C was employed. Thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses were performed to supplement and extend the sealed system investigations and to provide information regarding thermal oxidative behavior under dynamic conditions.

"INTRODUCTION This is the fourth report of investigations dealing with the cooperative tests between the Bureau of Mines and industry on the use of electrolytic manganese in steelmaking. The first report dealt with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of stainless steel 3/ the second with its use in acid electric steel practice, 4/ and the third with its use in low-carbon basic open-hearth steelmaking. 2/ A résumé of those investigations E7 appeared in the magazine STEEL. 5/ The present report deals with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of four types of stainless steel and the new Timken 16-25-6 alloy. The Bureau of Mines supplied The Timken Roller Bearing Co. with 62,000 pounds of electrolytic manganese for use in the tests.The electrolytic manganese was produced at the Bureau of Mines pilot plant, Boulder City, Nev., by the process developed by the Bureau and described in Bulletin 463, Operation of Electrolytic Manganese Pilot Plant, Boulder City, Nev., by J. This study was conducted to make a limited evaluation of experimental and standard tractor dozer blades. A field test program was conducted in the southeastern part of Kansas on strip-mined areas where the spoil banks are parallel with rest-to-crest distances between 90 and 120 ft and maximum dozing distances usually less than 50 ft. This evaluation was a part of an overall joint Pittsburg and Midway Mining Company--U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Specialized Reclamation Field Test Program primarily centered on the field t sting of experimental high-volume lateral relocation blades. The three blades evaluated were the 60-ft-wide angle (A) blade mounted on two 41B tractors. a 48-ft-wide A blade mounted on two D9H tractors, and a 13-ft-wide reclamation universal (Rec U) blade mounted on a D9H tractor. In addition to the experimental blades, three commercially available blades were tested: A 20-ft universal (U) blade mounted on two side-by-side (SxS) D9H tractors; a 20-ft U blade mounted on a 418 tractor; and a l2-ft straight (S) blade mounted on a D8H tractor. The dozer blade evaluations compared measured blade performance with soil and other site characteristics and with estimated earth-moving performance rates based on earthmoving methodology that accounts for the traction and speed of the tractor. The earthmoving methodology was also validated with data collected during this program.

This project had as its objective the experimental investigation of water capsule production utilizing the Southwest Research Institute's submerged nozzle encapsulation apparatus (U.S. Patent 3,389,194). Initial efforts on this project involved nozzle configuration and shell formulation optimization. The shell formulation developed on a prior program was modified during the course of the project to obtain the best balance of capsule breakage resistance and water retention. Subsequent effort centered on determining operating conditions which would produce the best quality capsules for each candidate shell formulation as determined by laboratory tests. Some preliminary work was done to increase the production capacity of the encapsulation equipment. The program was extended with major emphasis concerned with scale-up studies of capsule production capacity and the treatment of problems associated with grouting cartridge fabrication. During the course of the program, water-containing capsules were produced which have good long-term water retention, block resistance and adequate strength. Using a single-nozzle design, a production capacity of 15.9kg (35 pounds) per hour was demonstrated to give acceptable capsules based on initial results.

Preliminary results of an experiment in seismic holography indicate that the techniques of acoustical holography may be successfully used with seismic waves to determine the size and general shape of underground objects. This experiment was carried out under field conditions on a moderately large scale compared with the typical laboratory experiments in acoustical holography. The object to be mapped was a 100-foot-diameter, spherical, low-velocity zone of explosively fractured rock in oil shale at an average depth of 80 feet. The seismic wavelength of the Fourier component wave used in making the seismic holograms was 50 feet at a frequency of 140 cps. The hologram sampling aperture was 226 feet square and was sampled by 441 geophones in a 21 by 21 rectangular array. One novel aspect of the experiment was the use of a wide-band polychromatic explosive source of seismic waves rather than a narrow-band quasi-monochromatic vibrator source. A successful laser reconstruction of the object image from a lensless Fourier-transform hologram in the form of a 5/l6-inch-square photographic transparency is illustrated. The size of the underground object measured from the laser reconstruction of the object and the size inferred from a knowledge of the amount of explosives used to fracture the site and the tensile strength of the oil shale are found to agree.
