The Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace was operated successfully with anthracite metallurgical briquets . Tuyère pressures were higher and more erratic than for operations using coke , and furnace " hangs " occurred more frequently . Higher hot - blast temperatures were required to maintain the quality of the metal . By using higher hot blast temperatures , the fuel and production rates and slag volumes were comparable to those obtained for all - coke operation . The anthracite metallurgical briquets exhibited excellent mechanical strength and descended through the shaft of the furnace with little breakage or reduction in size .

"INTRODUCTION The Krausse Estate property was the site of the first lead silver mining in western Kentucky, which began with the sinking of the Andrew Jackson shaft in 1835 3/. The earliest miners considered fluorspar of no value and threw it upon the waste dump, but Crittenden County later became an important part of the western Kentucky and southern Illinois fluorspar district 4/, which has produced about 90 percent of the fluorspar mined in the United States. By 1945, approximately 35,000 tons of fluordpar ore had been produced from the Estate property.This property can be reached by traveling west from Marion on Highway 60 from 2.5 miles, than northward 3 miles. The road from the paved highway to the mines is very rough but not impassable even in bad weather. Ore is hauled 5 1/2 miles by truck to custom mills at Marion, a town of 2, 000 population, where the Illinois Central Railway was a freight station.Hurricane Creek runs through the eastern part of the property. The surface slopes steeply upward to west from the creek, and the topography is rough. The top of the hill is about 150 feet above the creek.The climate permits working throughout the year, but spring rains cause surface water to enter mine and water apparently drains southward along the fractured fault zones, so that when no water is being pumped at properties north of the Krausse Estate a heavy flow comes on the Krausse."

Two methods were devised and evaluated for quantitatively measuring the amount of oleic acid on flotation products and in flotation waters. One method involved use of an organic solvent to remove carbon-l4-tagged oleic acid from mineral surfaces and flotation water phases with subsequent radio-metric analysis of the extracts. Studies showed this method to be slow and subject to large variations in accuracy and reproducibility. In the second procedure, tagged oleic acid was measured directly on the surfaces of dried mineral products. Oleic acid in the water phase was determined by adsorbing it on fine mineral, drying, and radiometric counting. Quantitative analysis of oleic acid on flotation products from bench-scale flotation tests with synthetic mixtures of ore minerals and quartz and with natural ores showed this method to be fast, accurate, and reproducible.

Two examples of en echelon mining-induced fractures seen in hard-rock mines provided a basis for inferring that fracture zones and bedding plane separations immediately surrounding mine openings are promoted by oblique shear into the openings. It is hypothesized that initial fractures or separations form at the corners of openings as a result of high stress and physical constraint on the rock's ability to deform elastically toward the opening. These conditions result in a locally preferred direction of shearing. The shearing, in turn, generates tensile stress that initiates a progression of systematically offset fractures approximately parallel to the direction of greatest compressive stress. The fractures or bedding separations create tabular rock layers that amplify shearing displacement through bending and dilation. Such shearing effectively reduces and redistributes the compressive stress, but significant dilation is an inevitable consequence. The combination of dilation and shearing and the progressive development of fracture zones have important implications with respect to ground support. The concept of mining-induced fractures forming as a result of shear is illustrated by two examples from coal mines. First, fractures seen at longwall faces probably result from shear associated with subsidence. The fracture zone that develops approximates or possibly defines the draw angle of subsidence. As the face advances, fractures extend downward along the lower edge of the fracture zone, while upper extensions of the fractures are pressed closed. Fracture zones in entry roofs provide a second practical example. Here, mining-induced fractures typically follow bedding planes. The shear zone model suggests that the first bedding separations develop near the edges of the roof and successive separations progress upward and toward the center. However, if the direction of greatest stress is inclined with respect to the roof, a fracture or bedding separation zone may propagate from one side only and also extend higher. Because coal ahead of the face provides some support against lateral shear deformation, bedding separation is inhibited near the face. Rock bolts installed close to the face ultimately become more strained and bent than bolts installed a few meters from the face, and bolts installed through the more remote part of a separation zone may ultimately experience the greatest tensile and bending strains. This model is supported by field data documenting progressive bolt failures that rapidly propagated downward across the roof during face advance.

The Bureau of Mines developed a zircon sand molding process for static casting of small titanium or zirconium shapes. Castings with unfinished weights up to 3.5 kg (7.7 lb) were produced in an inductoslag furnace and castings up to 7 kg (15.4 lb) were poured in a consumable electrode skull-casting furnace. Molds and cores were made by ram-molding, foundry-grade zircon sand (AFS gfn 93 to 95) bonded by grade D waterglass and tempered with water. Molds and cores were cured either at 250° C (482° F) or 900° C (1,652° F). Castings from the higher temperature molds broke cleanly from the sand while the lower temperature molds produced castings that had to be cleaned by sand-blasting. However, low-temperature cured molds and cores have a number of advantages as follows: (1) A faster, less energy-consuming curing cycle is used; (2) expended cores are water soluble which greatly facilitates core removal; and (3) enough of the binder in crushed expended molds is reactivated by temper water so that the molding mix can be reused five times without any fresh binder additions and up to twenty times without exceeding a total cumulative binder addition of 52 ml/kg dry sand. Crushed used molds that had been cured at 900° C had no detectable binding strength when mixed only with temper water. A large number of oxide and silicate mold washes were studied for improved casting integrity. The most effective wash found for zirconium or titanium casting was monoclinic zirconia (325 mesh).

A combined ion exchange X- ray spectrographic method was evaluated for the determination of 11 metallic elements in high - purity tungsten : Aluminum , calcium , chromium , cobalt , copper , iron , magnesium , manganese , nickel , titanium , and zinc . Copper , nickel , and manganese in the 5- to 100 - microgram range ( 1 to 20 parts per million based on 5 - gram samples of tungsten ) , calcium in the 10- to 100 - microgram range , and cobalt in the 5- to 20 - microgram range can be determined within an accuracy of ± 10 percent of the amount present . Limits of detection of these elements are 0.05 to 0.14 microgram . The overall method was unsatisfactory for the determination of aluminum , chromium , iron , magnesium , titanium and zinc in tungsten .

The fiscal year which ended June 30, 1932, although one of acute financial de ression was, nevertheless, one of distinct encouragement to those who have long struggled against the much too prevalent occurrence of accidents in coal mines, especially of coal mine fire and explosion dis- asters, both of which are now known to be readily preventable. Table 1 summarizes some important information about explosions in the United States coalies for the fiscal year which ended June 30, 1932, insofar as such information is available to the safety division of the United States Bureau of Mines, the personnel of which are under instruction to get in touch with and report on all mine explosions in their respective districts, including not only those occurrences with loss of life but also those in which for- tunately no lives, are affected. Table 1 gives data on 33 ignitions in 10 States with a total of 87 deaths for the year; the number of ignitions (33) is considerably groater than the number (26) for the previous fiscal year, and is exactly the aver- age number for the past four fiscal years; the mumber killed in the 33 ignitions (57) is materially lower than that (217) for the preceding fiscal year or the average (150) for the past four fiscal years. The States with the greatest number of deaths from explosions in the fiscal year ending June 30, 1932, were Virginia; 54; West Virginia, 11; Pennsylvania, 7 (6 being in anthracite mines); Alabama and Colorado, 4 each; Illinois and Kentucky, 3 each; and Maryland, 1. The greatest number of ignitions listod wes that for West Virginia, 7; then came Pennsylvania with 6 (2 being in anthracite mines); Alabama with 5; Colorado, Illinois, Tennessee and Virginia, 3 each; and California, Kentucky, and Maryland, 1 each. "There is a considerable need for standardized respirable dusts with consistent, reproducible characteristics which simulate those of actual mine dust. The availability of such materials should be a significant factor in promoting coordinated research into dust characterization and mine monitoring, dust control, and the biomedical aspects of dust toxicology. The use of an opposed-jet, fluid-energy grinding system in closed circuit with a cross-flow, centrifugal air classifier for preparing bulk quantities of respirable-size dust has been investigated, and appropriate, standardized procedures have been established. By stage-crushing, screening, and fine-grinding with a Donaldson Acucut classifier/mini-grinder system, it is possible to produce bulk quantities of respirable dust at relatively high rates. Using minor modifications to the system, broader or narrower size distributions can be prepared within the respirable range. The system has been shown to reach steady-state with respect to product size distribution very rapidly. However, preferential grinding/classification effects appear to lead to a slow build-up of mineral matter in the circulating load with a corresponding slow change in product composition with time. In those applications where the dust composition is required to match that of the feed coal, it may be necessary to allow considerable time for a true steady-state to be established.Standard respirable dust samples have been prepared from coals representing the western (high volitile A bituminous), central (medium volatile bituminous) and eastern (anthracite) mining areas of Pennsylvania. Quartz and kaolin clay samples, representing important mineral constituents of coal dust have also been prepared. Extensive characterization studies have been performed on the samples to evaluate chemical and mineralogical composition and the distributions of particle size and specific gravity. Detailed information on the original coals is available from the Penn State Coal Data Base. The standard coal dust samples appear to simulate actual mine dust very well with respect to particle size and shape, but generally have somewhat lower ash content. Samples of these standard dusts have been made available to research groups concerned with respirable dust in mines."

A new process under development by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for producing synthetic rutile from ilmenite is described. Rutile formation is based on oxidation and fluxing of titania slag produced by electric furnacing of ilmenite. Laboratory tests show that phosphorus pentoxide flux additions to oxidized slag enhance conversion to rutile by forming a phosphate-based glass matrix. This matrix contains most of the major impurities, including the oxides of iron, aluminum, magnesium, manganese, and silicon. Rutile crystals of 5 to 150 microns in size were formed in slags heated to temperatures of 800° to 1,550° C. The synthetic rutile crystals were liberated from ground slag by treating with phosphoric acid to weaken the glass matrix, followed by attrition scrubbing. Rutile fractions analyzed as high as 94 percent titania content. In several instances, more than 90 percent of the titanium in the shag was recovered to yield combined rutile fractions containing 90.2 to 92.6 percent titania.

Measurement of the deformation of a borehole in rock subjected to a change in applied stress can be used to calculate the magnitude and direction of the applied stress, provided a satisfactory deformation-applied stress relationship exists , In this investigation by the Bureau of Mines the deformation of a bore- hole in a rock model subjected to a known applied stress was compared with the theoretical deformation of a hole in an elastic, isotropic plate and was found to be in good agreement. Hence, this relationship can be used to calculate the applied stress on a borehole from borehole deformation measurements.

As a part of the program of investigation of domestic sources of manganese ore, mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines examined and sampled three properties in the vicinity of Winnemucca, Nev. As the ores were too low grade for direct production of ferromanganese, they were tested for their amenability to concentration by ore-dressing methods. Two samples of ore were procured by examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines from several outcrops in the Pollard Canyon area, Pershing County, about 30 miles southeast of Winnemucca. The manganese occurs in relatively small lenticular bodies as secondary replacement deposits in chert and quartzite. The first sample represented average run -of -mine ore as exposed in the Pollard Canyon deposits. Sample 2 was composed of hand-sorted, high-grade ore.

An evaluation is made of a lime-soda sinter process for extracting alumina from clay. In this process, alumina is extracted by sintering clay with soda ash and limestone and then leaching the sinter with a dilute sodium carbonate solution. The sodium aluminate solution formed during leaching is separated from the residue and treated with lime in autoclaves to remove dissolved silica before alumina trihydrate is precipitated with carbon dioxide. The tri-hydrate is then calcined to a-alumina. Two options, dry grinding and wet grinding, are used in the sintering step. The fixed capital costs for plants producing 1,000 tons of alumina per day are $72 million for the dry grinding option and $66 million for the wet grinding option on a Marshall and Stevens chemical equipment index basis of 240.0. Specific geographic locations of plant and raw material sources are not assigned, but, since this process requires large quantities of both lime-stone and clay, the plant site is considered as variable with relation to the clay mine and limestone quarry. A nomograph is given to find operating costs at various delivered costs of clay and limestone. If the plant is located nearer the limestone quarry so that the delivered cost of clay is $2 per ton and the delivered cost of limestone is $1 per ton, the operating costs are $76.47 and $71.61 per ton of alumina for the dry grinding and wet grinding options, respectively. On the other hand, if the plant is located nearer the clay mine so that the delivered cost of clay is $1 per ton and the delivered cost of limestone is $2 per ton, the operating costs are $80.15 for dry grinding and $75.34 for wet grinding.
