The U.S. Bureau of Mines used the East Fork Pine Creek watershed to conduct a pilot study for an inactive and abandoned mine lands inventory, during which techniques and methodologies would be developed for subsequent inventories. A total of 177 waste dump samples, 191 mill tailings samples, and 36 stream sediment samples were collected. Water samples were collected from 18 sample sites during five sampling events. Waste dump, tailings, and stream sediment samples were analyzed for antimony, arsenic, cadmium, copper, iron, lead, mercury, and zinc. Results indicate a multidisciplinary approach is necessary: disciplines should include geology, geostatistis, geochemistry, geophysics, biology, hydrology, and remote sensing; small prospects do not generally contribute to watershed contamination, major mine and mill sites may contribute metal enriched sediment of metal enriched water; speciation studies and bioavailability studies are important.

"The interaction of amorphous 1ilica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O, C2H5OH, C7H2NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy. It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction or surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C7H2NO > C2H5OH > H2O. Index Headings: Silica; Surface vibrational modes; Photoacoustic spectroscopy; Hydrogen bonding agents.INTRODUCTIONThe use of m spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature.1 2 For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1• Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-5 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity, 7- 9 catalysis, 10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8NO), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by m spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples11 have used transmission m spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties. In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18•19 Moreover, according to a recent paper, 20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry. In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H50H, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface m modes. Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents. Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16•17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification. This report deals with upgrading of the coal reserves of Raleigh County, VI. Va., to metallurgical standards. The data on samples herein correctly show the characteristics of the bed at the point where sampled and are used to indicate the general quality of the bed in the county. The principal results and conclusions are: 1. Raleigh County contains large reserves of high-quality, high-, medium-, and low-volatile coals. 2. The principal beds from which an increased amount of coal is expected to be mined in the future are: The Eagle, Powellton, No. 5 Block, Hernshaw, Fire Creek, and Pocahontas No.6.

Much has been written of the changes undergone by coal in storage and the deterioration of coal through exposure to the weather. In order to obtain definite information for the benefit of the Government departments and of all who store coal in large quantitieS', a series . of tests was begun in the fall of 1909 under the supervision of tT. A. Holmes, then chief technologist of the United States Geological Survey, and was continued by the Bureau of Mines after its establishment in 1910. The tests were confined to determinations of the loss in heating value of the coals and did not include a study of other deterioration; for exaIp.ple, in coking quality or the yield of by-products in coking. The Bureau of Yards and Docks of the Navy Department cooperated in tests of New R~ver (W. Va.) coal, a variety largely used by the Navy. A preliminary report presenting a brief account of the early results of these tests has been published by the Bureau of Mines as Technical Paper 16.a The detailed report is presented in this bulletin, which gives a fu11 account of the tests and the analytical data covering a period of five years' storage. Data of somewhat similar experiments for shorter periods with gas coal from the Pittsburgh bed, with Pocahontas coal on the Isthmus of Panama, and with Sheridan, Wyo., subbituminous coal, which is used for railroad and other purposes in the West, are included. The tests of New River coal, in cooperation with the Navy Department, were undertaken to determine the advantage to be gained by storing coal under water, and particularly under salt water. Small lots were used in order to make the tests of maximum severity, and parallel experiments were made with run-of-mine and crushed coal under one-fourth inch size. All of the small lots tested under the different conditions (except those tested near Key West, Fla.) were taken as representative portions from one large original lot. The tests of Pocahontas coal, which, like the New River, is semibituminous, were undertaken chiefly to determine th.e effect of the tropical conditions in Panama. They were made on an outdoor pile of 100 tons of run-of-mine coal. Pittsburgh gas coal, a high-volatile, bituminous type used at gas and by-product coke works, was exposed for test at Ann Arbor, Mich., in cooperation with the University of Michigan. The university agreed to make tests at successive intervals of storage to determine, in its illuminating-gas experiment station, the yields of gas and byproducts from the coal. The coal, screened lump, was stored in about 4-ton lots out of doors in open bins. Subbituminous coal, which is mined in Colorado, Wyoming, and other States, and is known also as "black lignite," is commonly supposed to deteriorate rapidly in storage, especially by "slacking" or crumbling of the lumps. The tests herein described were undertaken at Sheridan, Wyo., in cooperation with the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad Co., in order to determine the extent of this slacking and the accompanying loss of heat value. The tests were in open bins holding 4 to 12 tons.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated five commercial badge-type carbon monoxide dosimeters. Color changes in the badge reagent indicated the presence of carbon, monoxide. Possible effects of ambient conditions on dosimeter response to CO during or after coal mine fires or explosions were studied. Temperature and humidity changes did not change dosimeter sensitivity to CO. Contaminant gases such as CO2, N02, S02, and H2S had effects that varied with brands of dosimeters ranging from no effect to increased sensitivity to CO. Dosimeters tested after 6 months of storage showed an increase in failure rate as high as 25 percent. Tests were conducted to determine the effects on dosimeter time-for-color change caused by observer's sight (colorblind); lighting, and coal dust on dosimeters. No significant effects were observed. Observer variance was the most pronounced factor observed in all tests.

The Great Gossan Lead in Carroll County, Va., is one of the largest undeveloped sulfide ore bodies known in the eastern United States. It extends for 16.7 miles along the western slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains (fig. 1). The various known segments of the deposit, extending from the southwest end to the northeast, are: The Great Outburst or Iron Ridge segment, Chestnut Creek, Copperas Hill, Sarah Ellen, Wild Cat, Cranberry, Dalton Hill and offset segment to the south of the Cranberry, Little Reed Island, Little Vine, and the Betty Baker at the northeast end. All of these segments have been explored or mined to various extents in the past for the iron gossan and secondary copper ore. The Great Outburst or Iron Ridge segment is now being mined by the General Chemical Division of the Allied Chemical & Dye Corp. for the sulfur and iron content of the primary ore. These deposits are becoming increasingly of Interest as a. large potential source of iron and sulfur owing to their proximity to Birmingham, where the burned cinder sells at a premium, and to the acid markets of the region.

"Standard rock dust for use in the rock dusting of coal mines might be defined tentatively as powdered mineral, light colored and free of carbonaceous matter and free silica, all of which will pass a 20-mesh screen while 50% of it will pass-through a 200-mesh screen.Such dust may be prepared from limestone, gypsum, anhydrite, or shale free of sand and flint. For the initial rock dusting of the average nongaseous bituminous mines enough standard rock dust should be applied so that the combustible content of the resulting mixture of rook dust with mine dust shall not exceed 45%, a range somewhere between 35% end 45% being the practical objective sought.All entries, slopes or passageways and room necks should be rock dusted.Additional safeguards are:a.,Rockdusting roomsb.,Scattering of dust in vicinity of shots before firing.c.,Placing of barriers in the mouths of panels, cross-entries and other key positions.Redusting becomes necessary whenever the combustible content of the mine dust exceeds the permissible maximum. This should be determined by regular, systematic sampling, followed by a simple analysis of the samples for combustible content. A Bureau of Mines volumeter for measuring the density can be used for the determination of combustible content."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the feasibility of utilizing low-grade phosphatic shale as a feed for phosphoric acid production. Present practice in the phosphate mining operations of southeastern Idaho is to remove and either stockpile or waste low-grade phosphatic shales as the high-grade phosphate beds are selectively mined. Acid digestion studies were performed on uncalcined shale and on shale calcined to remove free carbon to determine phosphoric acid quality, yield, and amenability to filtration. The untreated shale, containing 21.4 pct P205, was digested with sulfuric acid in a single-tank reactor to yield phosporic acid and gypsum residue. Although 96 pct P205 recovery was attained in digesting uncalcined shale, only the calcined product gave satisfactory filtration rates. Calcined shale yielded phosphoric acid recovery of about 93 pct of the contained P205. It was higher in impurities than commercially prepared acid derived from high-grade western phosphate rock. An acid filtration rate of 745 lb P205/ft2/day was attained. This value is lower than the rate of 900 lb P205/ft that is generally considered to be acceptable in industrial production of phosphoric acid from high-grade phosphate rock.

The dielectric constant .has been frequently referred to as an important property in electrostatic separation whore the particles are in an air ambient. Hatfield (1) has studied the problem on the basis of fundamental theory, with the conclusion that separations in air dependent on the differences in dielectric constant, in conjunction with a nonhomogeneous field, are not feasible, because of the low dielectric strength of the air. Although Hatfield has made the statement without showing the calculation or data, calculated values substantiating this under certain conditions of the problem will be given in the following text. However, under other Conditions, these conclusions do not hold, and it is probable that the dielectric constant is indirectly influential.

"The formation of reactive oxygen species resulting from the interaction of silica dust particles with red blood cell membranes was investigated; particularly, the effect of surface hydroxyl (silanol) group concentration on the rate of formation of such reactive oxygen species was investigated. The rate of formation was measured indirectly through the effect of catalase, a hemoprotein peroxidase, on silica-induced hemolysis. It was found that the addition of exogenous catalase to erythrocytes markedly reduces the hemolysis caused by silica particles. Furthermore, the amount of catalase required for deactivation of silica per unit area of particle surface is lower for fumed silica particles and calcined crystalline particles than for uncalcined, crystalline silica, suggesting a correlation between the concentration of OH groups at the silica particle surface and its potential for generation of H2O 2• The addition of albumin, a copper chelator, also decreases hemolysis. These results suggest that the hemolysis caused by silica particles is at least partly related to the formation of H2O2 at the particle surface and its subsequent reaction with Cu+ ions. The relationship between the concentration of surface silanol groups on the silica surface and the amount of catalase required to decrease hemolysis may also provide a method for testing potential fibrogenicity of respirable dusts. IntroductionReactive hydroxyl groups on silica surfaces are known to be cytotoxic and are believed to play a major role in silicosis (1-9). It has been proposed that this cytotoxicity results from hydrogen bonding to cell membranes and a resulting increase in membrane fluidity and permeability (4). Surface hydroxyl groups on silica surfaces have also been shown to interact with carbonyl oxygens in cell membranes (1,5). An extensive study by Nolan et al. (6) of the relationship between the negative surface charge resulting from ionized silanol groups and the hemolytic activity of crystalline a-quartz (Min-U-Sil) has shown a positive correlation between hemolytic activity and the surface concentration of silanol groups. These authors demonstrated that the hydrogen bonding of polyvinyl-N-oxide (PVPNO) with silanol groups, as well as the bonding of metal cations to the ionized sm- groups, results in significant decreases in hemolytic activity. Furthermore, it has been found that the complete removal of surface hydroxyl groups from the surface of respirable silica particles nearly eliminates the hemolytic potential of silica (7), suggesting that hydroxyl groups might be involved in other cytotoxic processes associated with silica-induced lung injury. Reactive oxygen species have been .implicated in cellular damage caused by respirable silica particles. Evidence for the presence .of oxygen radical species (02, OH°, H2O2) generated by silica, especially on freshly formed surfaces, has been produced by various investigators. Kalbanev et al. (8) detected H2O 2 in aqueous suspensions of quartz. Electron spin resonance and spin trapping by Shi et al. (9) confirmed the presence of OH"" radicals in aqueous suspensions of quartz, and Gulumian and van Wyk (10) suggested that both glass and quartz produce hydroxyl radicals in the presence of H2O 2 • Gabor et al. (11) detected the presence of malondialdehydereactive lipid peroxides (i.e., lipid-0°) in cultures of macrophages and respirable silica particles using the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) reaction test. Will (12), however, reported that iron enhances the TBA value of peroxidized lipids, and Scheulen and Kappus (19) found that catalase augmented malondialdehyde formation, thereby increasing the TBA values."

The average gravity of the total crude petroleum produced in the United States during; the year 1927 was 32.2° A. P. I., or 0.864 in terms of specific gravity. A similar study, made by the U. S. Geological Survey in 1921, gave the average gravity at that time as 32.0.° To one who is accustomed to thinking of crude petroleum in terms of Oklahoma-Kansas and North Texas trades it may be surprising that the average gravity for the entire country is no higher than 32.20. The chief reason for this apparent discrepancy lies mainly in California production, which in 1927 amounted to over 25 per cent of the total, but which had an average gravity of only 24.10. A factor of less importance was Arkansas, which, though on the decline as a producing State, exerted a material effect by reason of its average gravity of 21.6°, the lowest for any State. In view of the heavy production of light crude in the Seminole area of Oklahoma during 1927, it would appear that the average gravity should have shown more than a 0.2 per cent gain over 1921. That this did not occur was due to the fact that in the interim between 1921 and 1927 important heavy oil discoveries were redo, notably the Smackover field of Arkansas.

The Bureau of Mines analyzed 13 samples collected from three Randolph County coalbeds. The Peerless and Sewell bed samples were generally of metallurgical quality as received from the mines or could be easily upgraded. How-ever, the Lower Kittanning coa1bed samples proved to be quite inimical to upgrading to metallurgical quality.

The Bureau of Mines conducted studies to provide data on the room temperature mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy cast in waterglass-bonded zircon sand and to determine the effect of hot iso-static pressing (HIP) on these properties. Data on the cast and annealed Ti-6Al-4V alloy were compared with published data for forged and investment-cast Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The average Charpy V-notch impact strength compared favorably with the typical values of 17 ft?lbf for wrought material and 19.2 ft?lbf for investment-cast material. The room temperature mechanical proper-ties of cast and annealed material compared favorably with published values for investment-cast Ti-6Al-4V alloy and exceeded the specifications for (1) titanium and titanium alloy castings, grade C-5 according to ASTM B367-69, and (2) titanium alloy bars and forgings as specified in AMS4928H, except for the AMS4928H minimum requirement for reduction in area (25 pct). The minimum requirements are: tensile strength, 130 ksi; yield strength, 120 ksi (0.2 pct); and elongation, 6 pct. None of the specimens tested met the AMS4928H minimum requirement for reduction in area. The HIP process healed the internal casting porosity in the test specimens, but the fatigue strength was not significantly improved. The fatigue properties of both the cast and cast plus hot isostatically pressed castings were significantly lower than those of wrought products.

A computer program is presented to perform the detailed and numerous calculations required for determining the interface temperatures and steady - state heat flow through a furnace wall composed of several refractories in layers . A method is developed that will allow the designer to determine the various thicknesses for each refractory layer to minimize either the total wall thickness or the cost of the wall per unit of area . A sample problem is presented and analyzed to illustrate the techniques involved .

The performance of four sand cones was evaluated by the Bureau of Mines in three preparation plants that utilized cones in various flow schemes. The cone at plant A was a simple two-product one that provided clean coal and refuse. Plant B had two cones; one cone made a primary separation and the other a secondary separation. The primary cone separated salable coal from heavy rejects. The secondary cone separated a low-ash metallurgical coal and an intermediate-ash product suitable for plant fuel or steam markets. In plant C the sand cone was equipped with a middlings draw Which continually removed an intermediate specific-gravity product below the surface of the cone. The three primary separations of raw coal effected between floats and sinks were excellent. The recovery efficiencies for the plus 1/4-inch material ranged from 99.8 to 97.6 percent, the error areas ranged from 19 to 23 square centimeters, and the probable errors in specific gravity ranged from 0.033 to 0.024. The performance data of the two secondary separations varied from excellent in plant B, where the separation was on a par with the primary separations, to somewhat inferior in plant C, where the secondary separation was effected at the middlings draw.

The carnotite deposits of western Colorado and adjacent sections of Utah and Arizona were formerly an important source of radium and uranium until displaced by the exploitation of foreign deposits in the Congo and northern Canada . Recently interest has been renewed in domestic carnotite ores as a source of vanadium . Carnotite is a canary - yellow, crystalline , pulverulent mineral occurring in sandstones in the Colorado - Utah district as an incrustation on the faces of joints and fractures and deposited around and between individual sand grains , often strongly adhering to the surface of the grains . Chemically, it is a variable combination of potassium, uranium , and vanadium oxides with water of crystallization . It is soft and friable , and occurs in fine - grained or earthy form . In spite of a specific gravity of 4.1 , gravity concentration has not proved practical as a means of beneficiation because of the earthy texture of the mineral . Vanadiferous sandstones occur with minerals ranging from roscoelite (vanadium mica) , containing little uranium , to high- uranium and low -vanadium carnotite . There is considerable local variation in the texture of the ores . The treatment of carnotite ores has been described previously , with attention directed to the elimination of waste in mining and the extraction of radium . The suggested methods included those suitable for the recovery of vanadium , since both radium and vanadium occur in the same minerals . Moore and Kithil suggested crushing from 40- to 80 - mesh with rolls , accompanied by a rubbing action to loosen the carnotite adhering to the sand grains . This report summarizes part of the work performed under the USBM Contract No H0155113, "Noise Abatement of Continuous Mining Machines." It describes the noise source diagnosis of a Jeffrey 120M conveyor and the evaluation of several treatments all conducted in a test facility aboveground. The conveyor noise at the operator's position was gradually reduced from 101.5 to 93 dBA using damping, vibration isolation, sound barriers and smoother discontinuities. The underground performance of the selected treatments will be addressed in Volume II of the report.

Ten natural gases containing from 0.023 to 8.4 percent helium were investigated. In seven high-helium samples, the isotopic abundance of Ne21 was greater than in the atmosphere, being supplemented by 33 to 85 percent of "excess" or "radiogenic" Ne21. The ratio of He4/Ne21(rad) in these gases was evaluated and found to vary between 2.9 x 107 and 5.9 x 107 , a factor of approximately 2. Argon concentrations were determined by the isotope dilution method. The isotopic ratios of Ar40/Ar36 in the high-helium gases were from 5 to 75 times the atmospheric value, with the Ar40 being about 80 to 99 percent radiogenic in nature. The ratios of He4/Ar40(rad) in all 10 gases were evaluated and found to range from 4 to 18. The isotopic ratio of N14/N15 in four of the high-helium gases was essentially the same as in the atmosphere; in three cases it was approximately 5 percent higher than the atmospheric value of 272.0. The genesis of nitrogen and the relationship of nitrogen to helium in natural gases were reviewed and are discussed in terms of a theory for the concurrent generation of nitrogen, helium, radiogenic neon 21, and petroleum (hydrocarbon gases and liquids).

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes methods to enhance the capacity, stiffness, and timber utilization of wood crib supports. Since stiffer supports minimize strata deflections that contribute to roof instability, efforts to maximize crib stiffness while maintaining stability through a wide displacement range should be a design priority. The stiffness and capacity of conventional crib designs, employing alternating layers of wood timbers that are loaded perpendicular to the grain, can be increased by increasing the interlayer contact area or by using higher strength wood. Contact area can be increased by using wider timbers or employing more timbers per layer. Concepts that provide parallel-to-the-grain timber loading will provide substantial increases in crib stiffness and capacity. Two concepts that utilize this principle are examined: (1) an original South African design that constructs wood cribs from preformed layers (mats) of timber where short blocks are oriented vertically between horizontal slabs; and (2) a design that employs full lengths of timber placed vertically in the interior of a conventional crib structure. These designs also provide more efficient timber utilization by providing greater support capacity per volume of wood used in the crib construction.

Since 1941 the Federal Bureau of Mines has been conducting an intermit-tent program of placer and lode investigations to evaluate the potential tin resources of the western Seward Peninsula tin belt. Previous investigations were made in the Potato, Cape, Brooks (Lost River), and Ear Mountain areas. As part of this program the Bureau made a reconnaissance of reportedly tin-bearing stream gravels in areas adjacent to the previously worked tin deposits at Lost River and Potato Mountain. The objective of the reconnaissance was to determine if additional areas might be favorable for lode or placer exploration. The work was begun late in the fall of 1956 and completed during the following summer. The streams sampled were the Lost River and York Creek in the Brooks Mountain area and the Anikovik River and Kigezruk and Baituk Creeks in the York area. Samples were obtained by churn-drilling methods employing conventional placer-evaluation procedures. Holes were drilled at wide intervals at sites chosen as being representative of drainage areas rather than of individual gravel deposits. Minor to trace amounts of tin were found in the gravels of all these streams, but the highest grade was 0.35 pound of tin per cubic yard in the gravels of Lost River below the mouth of Tin Creek. Small amounts of gold were found on Baituk Creek and in one hole on the Anikovik River; the highest grade did not exceed 10 cents per cubic yard. Traces of scheelite and barite were found on York Creek, chromite was encountered in one hole on the Anikovik River, and minor amounts of titanium minerals (probably derived from basaltic intrusives) were found in the York area.
