Three samples of waste lubricating oil were re-refined by processes developed by the Bureau of Mines and reformulated with additives to meet designated requirements for viscosity and service. Quality-defining bench-scale tests were used to compare and evaluate the quality of these three motor oils, eight commercially re-refined lubricating oils, and three new lubricating oils. Most of the re-refined oils studied could not be distinguished from new oils by the bench tests used to define quality. There was some evidence, however, that one and perhaps more of the re-refined products investigated might not meet all of the quality standards of new lubricating oil, suggesting the need for better quality controls by re-refiners.

Exposure to mineral aerosol is an occupational health hazard in mining and mineral processing industries because of the risk of developing pneumoconiosis. Agricola (1556) described this hazard for metal mining in Carpathia. He described shortness of breath and consumption, conditions that are now associated with asthma and emphysema. By the end of the nineteenth century, several respiratory diseases were known to affect miners, including silicosis and coal workers' pneumoconiosis (Fletcher, 1948; Seaton et al., 1981). For example, silicosis, not tuberculosis, was clearly recognized as the hazard in the Vermont granite quarries and stone-cutting sheds (McFarland, 1927). The Gauly Bridge Tunnel disaster in the mid-1930s caused the deaths of an estimated 700 workers by acute silicosis and focused the nation's attention on this disease (Cherniack, 1986). By the mid-twentieth century, it was clear that risk of simple pneumoconiosis is associated with a miner's cumulative exposure to mine aerosol in the respirable size range and that prevention lies in reducing that exposure through regulation (Seaton, 1986). In the United States, regulation of mine worker exposure to airborne mine dust is the responsibility of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in the U.S. Department of Labor. The key legislation relating to improved mine worker health was the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, enacted in 1969 (U.S. Congress, 1969) and subsequently amended as the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 (U.S. Congress, 1977). MSHA receives technical assistance from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). NIOSH also provides recommended exposure limits (RELs) for contaminants to MSHA. MSHA's regulation of mines includes the establishment of a dust standard administratively based on the these RELs. Some mine operators must submit a dust control plan designed to meet the dust standard. Periodic mine inspections determine if mines are com- plying with both the dust standard and the dust control plans (MSHA, 1991). The most common dust measurements are those for respirable dust (according to the definition given in Fig. 26-7), that is, the fraction of aerosol particles able to reach the gas exchange region of the lungs. The other health-related size fractions (inhalable and thoracic-see Fig. 25-1, and "total" dust) are also occasionally measured. A "total" dust measurement is defined by the common practice of the last 30 years or so, using 25 mm or 37mm plastic cassettes (e.g., from PAL, MIL, SKC ). The types of mines have been categorized

Mercury was produced originally at the Idaho Almaden mine from 1939 to 1942. When the ;.nine was shut down, more than 100,000 tons of ore, containing from 2.5 to 3 pounds of mercury per ton, was known to be adjacent to old workings but had been considered too low grade for commercial operation. Later, detailed, systematic exploration by Rare Metals Corporation of America increased and delimited enough minable reserves for further operation to be foreseen for several years. The average grade of the ore is estimated at slightly more than 3.5 pounds of mercury per ton. Open-pit mining and installation of the largest rotary kiln in the United States furnacing mercury ore have made possible profitable exploitation of these reserves (fig. 1). The bulk of the exploration was by percussion drilling, although some diamond drilling was done to check the results. When enough reserves were indicated to assure a successful operation, stripping and plant construction were started simultaneously. Figure 2 is a general view of the plant. The ore bodies, although irregular in size, shape, and grade and covered by essentially barren cap rock, are amenable to low-cost, trackless, open-pit mining. Development consists of stripping the overburden and removing, barren cap rock. Ore is being mined at approximately [5],000 tons per month and treated in a 175-ton-per-day furnacing plant.

The Deep River coal field is in Chatham, Lee, and Moore Counties, N. C. The coal-bearing part of the basin is about 35 miles long and 5 to 10 miles wide. Sanford, the county seat of Lee County, is the largest town in the area, with a population of 10,000. Four railroads provide transportation to the area, and four United States highways and improved county roads provide easy access to the field. The Carolina mine at Farmville is the only operating mine in the field. The mine was opened in 1921 by two rock slopes driven from the surface to the Cumnock bed. Mining operations continued intermittently until 1945 and then stopped. In the fall of 1947 the mine was reopened by the newly organized Raleigh Mining Corp.

[There is a general concept in the, coal trade that the moisture- and ash-free B.t.u. of coal from the same seam, and. surely from the same mine, is substantially a constant; that calculation of the -moisture- and ash-free B.t.u. value from the proximate analysis and B.t.u. determined in the laboratory will reveal whether a coal came from a given area or sears; and that, having this constant, the B.t.u. value of a coal sample can be calculated fairly closely upon a dry or as-received basis from the moisture and ash values of its proximate analysis.]

Interim performance specifications are presented for carbon monoxide, methane, and air velocity transducers used in the Bureau of Mines intrinsically safe mine monitoring system. These specifications give quantitative values or qualitative descriptions of the transducers, including environmental parameters and monitoring system measurement and maintenance requirements as recommended by the Bureau of Mines. Commercially available transducer modules and prototype modules are listed together with selected characteristics.

Comprehensive field tests were made by the Federal Bureau of Hines at the Conda open pit mine near Soda Springs, Idaho, to determine whether surface geophysical techniques could be used to detect and delineate faults in phosphate deposits. The tests included seismic refraction, magnetometry, electrical resistivity, and airborne photography. Of the several geophysical techniques tested in the field, horizontal resistivity profiling was the most effective method for diagnosing faults. The method is quick, inexpensive, accurate, and can be easily used by mining company personnel to detect and delineate faults.

A simple, reliable field test for beryllium in rocks has been developed by the Rolla Metallurgy Research Center of the Federal Bureau of Minas. A small portion of the pulverized rock is fused with a sodium carbonate-sodium hydroxide flux in a wire loop. The fused mass is dissolved in water, a few drops of quinizarin solution are added, and the solution is viewed under ultraviolet light. A pink-to-orange fluorescence reveals the presence of beryllium in a sample containing as little as 0.013 percent beryllium (0.26 percent beryl). INTRODUCTION New and potential uses for beryllium make necessary a more intensive search for this metal, which is so similar to aluminum in its chemical reactions that it is not separated from aluminum in ordinary chemical analyses. The principal ore mineral of beryllium is beryl, a beryllium-aluminum silicate, which contains only 5 percent beryllium. This mineral is so similar to quartz in appearance that it is not always possible to distinguish one from the other in the field. While the distinction may be made easily with a petrographic microscope, few prospectors have access to such an instrument, and fewer still know how to use it.

"The interaction of amorphous silica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O,, C2H,OH, C,H,NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy, It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction of surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C,H,NO > C2H2OH > H2O.The use of IR spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature,"" For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1. Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-6 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity,7-9 catalysis,10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated-have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8N0), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by IR spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples17 have used transmission IR spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties, In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18,19 Moreover, according to a recent paper,20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry, In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H5OH, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface IR modes, Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents, Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16,17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification, Details of this work are given below,The Cab-O-Sil samples of silica used here were obtained from the Cabot Corporation of Tuscola, IL, In our earlier studies,14,20 we have shown these particles to be amorphous and about 0.05 am in size, For coverage of these particles with H20 and C2H50H, the following procedure was employed. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to determine the nature and frequency of coal mine roof failure beneath valleys. A mechanism for this failure and suggestions for controlling this problem are presented. Hazardous roof conditions identified in some mines were positively correlated with mining activities beneath stream valleys. Mine maps with overlays of unstable roof and locations of stream valleys show that 52 pct of the instances of all unstable roof in the surveyed mines occurred directly beneath the bottom-most part of the valley. The survey also showed that broad, flat-bottomed valleys were more likely to be sites of hazardous roof than narrow-bottomed valleys. Evidence of valley stress relief was found beneath several valleys in the form of bedding plane faults and low-angle thrust faults. This type of failure, previously believed to be only a shallow phenomena, was found at mining depths as great as 300 ft. In situ, horizontal stress measurements beneath a valley and the adjacent hillsides, confirmed valley stress relief. Numerical analysis of 13 valleys overlying one mine property showed the effect of the valley excavation on horizontal and vertical stress.

A two-phase molten halide-silicate technique for extracting tungstic oxide (WO3) from scheelite (CaW04) and wolframite [(Fe, Mn)W04] was investigated. The halide phase extracted over 99 percent of the was, whereas the lower silicate phase retained about 90 percent of the calcium, iron, or manganese oxides. The most efficient extraction and separation of tungsten from scheelite was accomplished at 1,080° C in a molten system containing, in mole-percent, 9 calcium tungstate (CaW04), 42 sodium chloride (NaCl), 28 sodium fluoride (NaF), 17 sodium metasilicate (Na2SiO3), and 4 alumina (Al2O3). Wolframite was also treated at 1,0800°C; the molten system contained, in mole-percent, 11 (Fe, Mn)W04, 74 NaCl, and 15 Na2 SiO3.

A new, cheaper precipitation scheme has been developed to produce purified zirconium oxide, Technical-grade sulfuric acid is used to precipitate a basic zirconium sulfate from a hot dilute hydrochloric acid solution. With close control of temperature, pH, and zirconium - sulfate ratio, excellent purification and complete zirconium recovery can be attained. The process has been successfully applied for 3 months and has proved to be a more satisfactory procedure than the ammonium phthalate process used previously. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to characterize longwall gob loading under bump-prone geologic conditions. Bureau-designed stress meters were installed in the floor rock beneath two longwall panels and coal pillars in the gate road between them. Gob and gate road pillar stress was monitored continuously by a state-of-the-art data acquisition system. The timing of the final destruction of the abutment pillar's load-bearing core was optimal, since the pillar is located between two gob areas and no longer of significant importance for ground control. Maximum stress was observed immediately in front of the longwall face, and this pressure quickly dropped as the face moved past the instruments. The center of the longwall panels regained significant overburden load, while the instruments located less than 100 ft from the edge of the panel showed little or no increase in pressure due to gob reloading.

An evaluation is presented of the Bureau of Mines process for the recovery of metal and mineral values from municipal incinerator residues. This process employs standard mineral beneficiation techniques and is operating on a pilot-plant scale of 1,000 pounds of incinerator residue feed per hour. Products from this separation process include ferrous, aluminum, and copper-zinc scrap, and colorless and colored glass. Cost estimates were prepared for four plant sizes. The estimated capital and operating costs For the four plants follow: [ ] It is assumed that the separation plant is located adjacent to a municipal incinerator. Provision is made, however, for part of the residue feed to be delivered by truck so that one large separation plant can be used for residue from more than one incinerator.

"IntroductionRecognition of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) as a major occupational disease has affected various aspects of the coal mining industry in the United States as well as in almost all major coal producing countries, Regulations related to the control of coal mine dust forced mine operators to modify their mining and ventilation practices. As the coal production record of the last 15 years shows, this had both direct and indirect impacts on the productivity and production costs.To identify the causes of CWP, many research efforts have been made throughout the world. Most of these studies were epidemiological in nature, attempting to pinpoint exposure and seam variables that affected the incidence of the disease. Other studies have been oriented toward the elemental and mineralogical composition of the coal dust in the mine atmosphere and in the miners' lungs. These studies indicate that there may exist some relationships between the characteristics of the coal mine dust and the prevalence of the disease. Some of the variables that are thought to affect the occurrence of CWP are the mass of the dust in the working place, the rank of the coal, the existence of certain trace elements, the free silica content of the coal, and the existence of other minerals in the respirable dust. A more complete description of these previous research studies has appeared elsewhere (Mutmansky and Lee, 1984).The behavior of particles in the human lung is known to be governed by their aerodynamic diameter, which is defined as the diameter of a hypothetical spherical particle with unit density that exhibits the same settling velocity as the given particle. Because of this fact, the aerodynamic size distribution of coal mine dust is one of the parameters to be determined along with the other physical, elemental, and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of this paper is to establish a strategy for providing coal mine respirable dust samples for characterization purposes using instruments that classify according to the aerodynamic diameter. In addition, several findings concerning characterization methods will be presented"

This publication contains analyses arid related source data for 274 natural gas samples from 20 States. Of the total samples, 269 were collected during calendar year 1985; the reminder were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received before 1986, All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

The fundamental properties of dielectric separation were studied to provide insight into the design and operating characteristics of a dielectric separator. Force equations on mineral particles were derived and evaluated experimentally. Responses to variations in the electrical voltage and frequency, feed rate, particle size, dielectric fluid, and dielectric constant were tested theoretically and experimentally, using a 5-cm-diam dielectric separator. High-dielectric mineral recovery was proportional to the calculated effective dielectric force volume (EDFV) that surrounded each drum-electrode wire. Electrode spacing was the most sensitive design parameter; spacing of less than 0.4 cm was required for a good separation. Dielectric separation was effective for separating minerals with dielectric constants that differed by approximately 2 or more.
