"INTRODUCTION In cooperation with the Boston Edison Co. and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co. of Boston, Mass., a survey has been conducted continuously since 1929 by the Bureau of Mines to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes of the Boston Edison Co. The New England Telephone & Telegraph Co. also has cooperated in the investigation, and tests have been made in its manholes from May 1, 1933, to October 15, 1937. Yearly reports. 6/ on the results obtained since the beginning of the survey have been published.The methods and procedure of conducting the survey in 1937 were the same as heretofore."

Marble is one of tile most beautiful and enduring materials employed in the construction industries. Because of its diverse colors, decorative patterns, and varying textures, it has furnished material for artistic architectural design for many centuries. The marble industry is described in some detail in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 106, The Technology of Marble Quarrying, which, unfortunately, is now out of print but may be consul ted at most large libraries. Onyx marble and travertine are discussed in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6751. The purpose of this paper is to describe the main features of a distinctive group of ornamental marbles known as the serpentine marbles or verde antiques.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the Elk Creek RARE II area during the summer of 1981. The study area encompasses 18,900 acres [29.5 sq mi (7,680 ha)] along Elk Creek, 18 mi (30 km) southeast of Covello, California. No mineral resources were identified by the U.S. Bureau of Mines during this survey. Assay results of samples taken in this area indicate only trace amounts of manganese and chromium. No radioactive or fluorescent minerals were detected. No oil and gas, coal, or geothermal leases have been recorded for the study area.

SUSTAINED growth characterized the U.S. economy in 1964. Many new peaks were achieved in production, sales, employment, employee earnings, and business profits. At the end of 1964, the economy had experienced 4 years of uninterrupted expansion, and the greatest net gains in output for all postwar cyclical advances had been registered. There were no indications of the various weaknesses which have previously characterized advanced stages of business expansion. Both gross national product (GNP) and national income were 6.7 percent higher than in 1963. In 1964 GNP totaled $628.7 billion, a gain of $39.2 billion over the 1963 figure. On an overall basis, prices rose 1.75 percent in 1964. The real volume of output of goods and services (GNP in constant dollars) increased by 5.0 percent ill 1964; this was more than the 3.8-percent gain in 1963 but less than the 6.6 percent gain in 1962. The 1964 output gain also exceeded the average 3.7 percent annual increase for the postwar period. Congress authorized a two-stage tax reduction designed to further stimulate economic growth and employment. The tax cut favorably affected the 1964 economy in the following ways: By helping to boost personal income, corporate profits, and industrial production; by accelerating the pace of consumer spending and business capital expansion; and by increasing employment, thereby reducing unemployment to 5 percent. In studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines, two test areas were hydraulically stimulated and exposed by mining: One in the Pittsburgh coalbed at the Vesta No. 5 mine, Washington County, Pa.; and one in the Illinois No. 6 coalbed at the Inland mine, Jefferson County, Ill. Induced fractures were contained totally within the coalbed with no adverse effect on the stability of associated rock strata. Induced fractures were vertical and were propagated normal to the direction of least residual tectonic stress. Gas production was increased fivefold to twentyfold by hydraulic stimulation.

The contract objective was to evaluate sources of airborne quartz and research control methods that would assist underground mine operators in complying with respirable dust standards which have been reduced because of quartz in the dust exceeding five percent. The work involved: Phase I -evaluate sources of quartz dust at the roof bolter work location; Phase II -evaluate the relationship between the quartz content of the coal and adjoining rock strata and quartz exposure at the roof bolter and continuous miner locations Phase III -conduct laboratory tests to determine performance parameters for roof bolter dust collector systems. The underground surveys for Phases I and II determined: (1) the continuous miner typically is the greatest source of quartz exposure for the miner and roof bolter operators when single-split ventilation is utilized, (2) a statistically significant relationship be­tween quartz content in face material and operator exposure was not determined and data suggested mining equipment and procedures may be more critical. The Phase III lab tests indicated the use of dust hog-type bits, filter cartridges, maximized collector airflow, and reduced bit rpm should be utilized to minimize dust liberation at the roof bolter.

The present rapid growth of coal stripping in the United States is a curious reversal of the tendency of mining to proceed from outcrop to depth. A combination of technical and economic factors bas stimulated the use of stripping methods until today many million tons of coal We being recovered by open cuts from sites that an earlier generation of engineers would have passed by as not commercially mineable or, if workable at all, only by underground methods. The total quantity of bituminous coal and lignite mined in the United States by stripping in 1928, the latest year for which detailed figures are available, was 19,789,000 short tons. Of this, 71,000 tons came from small workings not equipped with power shovels and 587,000 tons from properties in which stripping and underground work were carried on at the same mine; but as neither of these types is representative of modern stripping practice, they will be omitted in the discussion that follows. The total from strip pits proper in 1928 was 19,131,000 tons, produced by 176 pits employing 385 steam or electric shovels.3 Figures by States are given in Table 1. Detailed statistics will be found in Economics of Strip Coal Mining; a study by O. E. Kiessling, to be published by the United States Bureau of Mines.

A technical and economic evaluation of the potential for improving mining productivity through the use of underreamers in blastholes, specifically in relation to Minnesota taconite, Arizona surface copper and in situ mining operations is presented. Included are (1) a review of the drilling and blasting practices presently being used, (2) a discussion of current underreamer technology. (3) the presentation of a general economic cost model for underreaming, (4) the application of the model to surface taconite, surface copper and in situ mining, and (5) a summary discussion including required performance specifications, potential overall benefits, and recommendations for further development.

A test series of small, precisely-controlled and thoroughly-monitored production blasts was conducted at two quarries. In each series, all variables except delay were kept constant, as much as practically possible. The first aim of the study was to determine the effect of local geology on ground vibration. The second aim was to test several hypotheses relating the effect of millisecond delay intervals to fragmentation and ground vibration. A resonant frequency of ground vibration was shown to be related to the thickness of the overburden, in accord with a model proposed by Gupta (1961). Since the overburden geology creating this resonant vibration cannot usually be changed, two methods were tested to choose delays such that blast vibrations would destructively interfere. These were shown to be effective in modifying both the peak particle velocity and response spectra of ground vibration. The delay interval chosen also affects fragmentation, primarily in massive rock, with an optimum relief between holes of 2 ms/ft. Strain gage records indicate a possible mechanism consistent with this information.

[This Is the ninth in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the interior. The first report gave data on motor gasoline sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The Present report presents analytical data for 2,033 samples, representing the products of approximately 80 companies, which, as in previous surveys, include both large and small suppliers. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data that were average by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before 'being submitted and are published exactly as they were received. As in previous surveys, the data are divided into the three groups of samples of regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines, and each group has been averaged separately. The cumber of samples, items, and brands comprising each group, exclusive of those of the Pacific coast, arc as follows: Regular price, 1,066 samples, 208 items, and 49 brands; premium price, 575 tamales, 154 items, and 38 brands; third-grade gasoline, 7;4 samples, 150 items, and 53 brands. The above referenced contract between Badger Manufacturing Corporation and the U. S Bureau of Mines was executed June 30, 1975, as a result of the request for proposals for innovative machine concepts. We selected the cutting machine category because of the obvious lack of technical progress in this field for many years: Phase I of the contract required blasting fragmentation tests to determine proper blasting patterns for use with the auger-type kerf cutting machine. Phase II required design concept development for a machine capable of cutting a circular void as an aid to blasting.

In 1984, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Mines studied 7,000 acres of the 9,240-acre Little Blitzen Gorge Wilderness Study Area in Harney County, OR, to evaluate its mineral resources. The study area is dominated by a 1,500-ft-deep canyon that was carved by Pleistocene glaciers in gently westward-dipping homoclinal flows of Miocene Steens Basalt. The Bureau reviewed pertinent literature and county mining records During the field investigations, 18 rock samples were collected from basalt dikes, breccia, fractured or porphyritic flows, and 20 alluvial samples from gravel accumulations. Mercury anomalies from sampling by the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries could not be verified. The mercury might have originated -From the Pike Creek Formation, a known mercury-producing unit that may extend into the study area beneath the Steens Basalt. Any epithermal deposit at depth would be expensive to explore and develop.

This paper reviews the potential hazards posed by the toxic fumes produced by detonating explosives in surface mining and construction operations. Blasting operations produce both toxic and nontoxic gaseous products; the toxic being mainly carbon monoxide (CO) and the oxides of nitrogen (NOx). The quantity of toxic gases produced by an explosive is affected by formulation, confinement, age of the explosive, and contamination of the explosive with water or drill cuttings, among others. Techniques to protect workers and the public from the potential hazards of explosive-related toxic fumes are discussed. These include: • Minimizing the quantity of toxic fumes produced. • Determining where the fumes may go so workers and neighbors can be moved out of harm’s way. • Preventing the fumes from moving towards workers and neighbors. • Monitoring the air near workers and neighbors so they can be relocated if fumes appear. • Ventilating structures or confined spaces until CO falls below a hazardous concentration.

The investigation described in this report was begun as part of the Bureau of Mines progress to develop acid processes for the extraction of alumina from low-grade bauxite and. clays. A domestic shortage of high-grade bauxite sui table for treatment by the Bayer process became acute as a result of' World War II; an intensive search for a practical acid process using lower-grade alumina-bearing raw materials was therefore warranted. The laboratory development was described in a preceding Bureau of Mines publication wherein the basic theory for the design and erection of a pilot plant maybe found. A 2-ton-per-day continuous pilot plant was constructed and successfully operated at College Park, Md., which demonstrated conclusively the chemical and mechanical feasibility of a solvent purification process for aluminum sulfate. The estimated production cost of $38.64 indicates that under present market conditions the process would not be economically feasible.

"INTRODUCTION During September, October, and November 1946 the Safety Division of the Bureau of Mines, off' the United States Department of the Interior, Pittsburgh, Pa., tested four new types of self-contained breathing apparatus and approved them in accordance with Schedule 13C. Approval was granted with the proviso that certain specifications outlined on the approval plate be made fully effective, and with the understanding that established safe practices in training in the care and use of self-contained breathing apparatus are of major importance.The excellent records made during the past 30 years in the safe use of self-contained breathing apparatus, some of which required the almost continuous wearing of apparatus during several hours daily for days, weeks, or months, may be attributed largely to the Bureau's system of rescue organizations, selection of physically fit rescue workers, effective training, and educational work done in rescue and recovery operations during fires or following disasters and in the care and use of self-contained breathing apparatus. Loss of life during wearing of breathing apparatus was due almost invariably to poorly assembled or otherwise defective apparatus, poor physical condition of the wearer, or insufficient training or some incorrect procedure.The newly developed breathing apparatus are of much simpler design than the conventional type used for the past several years; however, it is just as important to select rescue crews carefully and to train them properly in the care, use, and limitations of the new types of apparatus as for the older long-established types, if anything like safety is to be achieved in using them. The Bureau of Mines considers that 1/2-hour and 3/4-hour self-contained breathing apparatus should be used only as auxiliary equipment in mine rescue and recovery work, and their capabilities and limitations should be well understood by those who wear them."

This paper discusses the application of a training intervention that uses degraded images for improving the hazard recognition skills of miners. Method: NIOSH researchers, in an extensive literature review, identified fundamental psychological principles on perception that may be employed to enhance the ability of miners to recognize and respond to hazards in their dangerous work environment. Three studies were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the degraded image training intervention. A model of hazard recognition was developed to guide the study. Results: In the first study, miners from Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Alabama, who were taught with the aid of degraded images, scored significantly better on follow—up hazard recognition performance measures than those trained using traditional instructional methodologies. The second and third studies investigated the effectiveness of the training intervention at two mining companies. Data collected over a3—year period showed that lost—time injuries at mines in Alabama and Illinois declined soon after the training intervention was instituted. Impact on Industry: Further exploration of the hazard recognition model and the development of other interventions based on the model could support the validity of the steps in the hazard recognition model.
