Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. The British Geological Survey's regional geochemical database is used to identify the patterns associated with the various mineral deposit types and to examine the extent to which their distribution reflects the presence of long-lived metallogenic provinces in the crust. Image analysis provides new insights into the setting of the mineralisation, geochemical constraints on tectonic models of Caledonide evolution and evidence for terrane amalgamation and large-scale processes. There is evidence that much of the mineralisation reflects the presence of long-lived provinces with a distinctive geochemistry reflecting their origins as zones of crustal extension. In the case of the Middle-Upper Dalradiam sedex deposits, the relationship between geochemistry and tectonic setting is direct. In other cases, rocks deposited in extensional zones appear to have acted as reservoirs of ore-forming elements which were further concentrated during later events

The results of a laboratory investigation of rock fragmentation conducted with a model material were partially verified under field conditions. The object of the investigation was to study the qualitative and quantitative relations between the parameters of the primary blast and fragmentation to enable the planning of an economically efficient degree of disintegration with optimum utilisation of the blast energy. Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. An integration of S isotopic, fluid and mineralogical data for granitoid-related mineralisation showed that the porphyry systems had a predominantly subcrustal magma source, but the inner magma pulse of two-mica granite in the Fleet pluton was derived mainly from reduced sediments. The porphyry-style mineralisation formed from boiling fluids at high crustal levels, with a moderately saline fluid percolating down to the upper veins as they cooled but not penetrating the deeper Talnotry deposit. Veins in peripheral greywackes have a significant magmatic component but also incorporated CO2-rich components and metals released by dewatering of host sediments in response to granitoid intrusion. The low grade of regional metamorphism resulted in the significant fluid input from country rocks which led to the more exotic mineral compositions, especially where argillaceous sediments were involved

Rittinger's and Bond's descriptions of rock crushing relate the energy input required to fracture rock and the surface energy required to form new fractures to the change in specific surface area of feed and product during comminution. The potential applicability of this approach to blasting is illustrated, using the results of data from bench blasting tests on Pinal schists and production blasting of Carboniferous limestones. The approach contributes to understanding of the mechanisms involved in blasting and to the design of test blasts. A modified form is presented of the relationship between blasting energy, specific surface area of the muckpile and a rock energy constant related to the discontinuity structure of the rock. The modified equation fits observed data and offers a simple basis for further experiments

Distinct-element modelling has been used to study the mechanisms associated with observed deformation of the western face of the quarry. A complex failure mechanism involving distinct planar surfaces that was proposed for a slope failure in 1967 has been modelled and shown to be plausible. In addition, deep-seated flexural toppling may contribute to the slope instability. Modelling has confirmed the detrimental influence of a raised water-table on the stability of the slope and also indicates that the observed cyclic opening and closing of tension cracks may be attributed to seasonal rise and fall of the groundwater level

A simple solution to the problem of whether to round the calculated number of trucks up or down to the nearest whole number is to adopt as criterion the minimum cost per unit volume/mass moved, assuming all trucks in the fleet are of the same type. When the effects on journey time of varying haul-road slope are calculated for several rolling resistances, it is shown that the optimum angle of 7.5 degrees is moderately independent of both rolling resistance and height climbed; the lower the resistance, the lower the sensitivity to ramp angle, but if haul-road gradients do not exceed 1 in 10 (5.7 degrees) for safety reasons then travelling time will never be more than 7% greater than its theoretical minimum. Further calculations result in a graph of the maximum payload values to incur the minimum cost, for different values of total effective resistance

Paper presented at the MEP '89 conference held in Madrid, 13-15 November 1989. Britain has sustained an important metalliferous mining industry over many centuries. Recently, new geological concepts and exploration techniques have indicated that there is considerable potential for the discovery of a variety of deposit styles, often in previously neglected areas. The recent discoveries at Aberfeldy (Ba-Zn-Pb), Gairloch (Cu-Zn) and Cononish (Au-Ag)in Scotland and Curraghinalt (Au-Ag) and Lack (Au-Ag-Pb) in Northern Ireland are illustrations of this potential. Some of the prospective areas for future exploration are described and an indication is given of the legislative framework within which mineral exploration and development are carried out

During the construction of storage caverns, and during their lifetime if the use to which they are put so requires, it is necessary to provide adequate ventilation to ensure the safety and comfort of the underground workforce. An analysis of likely contaminants during construction has indicated that where a large facility is situated in a rock mass of even moderate temperature climatic conditions are likely to be the limiting factor during most of the mining operation and atmospheric pollution when blasting is undertaken. Possible options for improvement are increased air flow, cooling of intake air and reduction of the heat source by altering the number and type of haulage units employed in the cavern. Local solutions are an alternative approach where heat problems are confined to a few specific locations

To improve SO2 emission compliance, pyrrhotite from Sudbury copper-nickel ores is being depressed with DETA. To understand the mechanism of depression, the role of complexing in controlling metal-ion activation of pyrrhotite was investigated. DETA was found to remove Cu and Ni ions but leave hydrophilic ferric species on the pyrrhotite surface. The metal:DETA ratio appeared to be 1:2. Cu was more readily removed than Ni, but the combination of DETA with sulphur dioxide was equally effective for both metal ions. Certain combinations of DETA, Ni ions, xanthate and dithionite (S2O4) or dithionate (S2O6), as representative derivatives of SO2 in water, produced hydrophilic precipitates. Although no complete mineralogical balances have been published, the background knowledge and proven, highly sensitive analytical techniques to produce them already exist. For PGE-Cu-Ni sulphide ores a combination of ore microscopy, image analysis and electron microprobe analysis with proton microprobe analysis of sulphides for Pd, Rh and Ru and ion microprobe analysis for Pt, Ir and Rh (in some minerals) should provide the necessary data when combined with reliable assays. Other sulphide ores, such as the Cu-Ni-(PGE) ores of Sudbury, Ontario, require a similar approach except that the ion microprobe would be more suitable for the analysis of Pd, Pt and Rh because of its greater sensitivity. Oxide-silicate ores may be harder to deal with quantitatively, although the potential to confirm the presence of trace PGE within silicates and oxides may be greater than in PGE sulphide and Cu-Ni-(PGE) sulphide ores. However, solid solution of PGE in oxides and silicates still requires thorough documentation and evaluation in terms of their significance for the overall metallurgical balance

Bitumen occurs in the basins in reservoir sandstones, in veinlets close to hydrocarbon source rocks, in veins through lava beds and in sulphide-mineralised veins where it is closely associated with, but predates, the sulphides. The role of organic matter was probably in enhancing metal reduction by creating a low-Eh environment rather than in metal transport. Coeval euhedral quartz crystals or albite in sulphide-bearing carbonate veins provide evidence of an aqueous component to the hydrocarbon fluid

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks, held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. Platinum-group minerals (PGM) in the enriched zone at Dust Mountain occur in two separate parageneses, the first representing primary magmatic PGM and the second primary magmatic PGM that have been reduced to alloys during serpentinisation. Minerals in the first group were unaffected by hydrothermal alteration on account of their textural setting or stable chemical composition. Despite substantial alteration of the serpentinised assemblage, most evidence points to the dominant role of primary magmatic processes in determining PGM occurrence. Several base metals have nevertheless been introduced hydrothermally. With respect to surficial dispersion the single most important paragenetic factor was the reduction of sulphides to alloys, rendering them more susceptible to mechanical erosion and less so to chemical leaching. The different textural setting of Pd-group and Ir-group phases results in different dispersion characteristics, with major implications for stream sediment sampling

The adsorption of Cu2+ ions by Penicillium sp. displayed a dual rate, with an initial faster phase followed by a slower one. The adsorption rate increased with increasing pH due to chemical and biochemical reactions. The Cu-loading capacity of the biomass increased at higher initial Cu2+ concentrations. Above 40 degrees C the adsorption rate decreased which may be due to partial hydrolysis of biopolymers which are essential constituents of the cell wall. Adsorption kinetics followed the Freundlich isotherm and the equilibrium concentration that was calculated on the basis of the isotherm matched the observed value well. A series of theoretical adsorption curves were produced using mathematical correlations between the mass transfer coefficient, the Cu2+ ion concentration at equilibrium and at time t. The correlation between the theoretical and observed adsorption rates for different experimental conditions was good. It was concluded that the results from the study were best explained using a mass-transfer adsorption model

Provided that they are used correctly, numerical models can be of considerable assistance to mining engineers in designing underground excavations. Guidance is given to the engineer or geologist who is not a specialist in numerical analysis but who is interested in using numerical modelling tools or in employing someone to analyse the stresses, displacements and failure in the rock surrounding underground excavations. A description of the theoretical background to a number of these numerical models and discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of each are followed by guidelines on the selection of appropriate models for each stage in the development of a mine, from exploration to the completion of mining

The robustness of the large-sections correction procedure, Hill's fast approximation, Barbery's correction and the PARGEN correction was examined by comparing their ability to reconstruct the true liberation distribution using sectioning data from computer-generated spheres. The results indicate that the flexibility of a correction procedure is related to the assumptions it makes about the continuity of the liberation distribution, locked-particle characteristics and ore texture. Overall, the large-sections procedure appeared to be the most generally applicable. The Hill fast approximation performed well, but this was probably because it partially incorporates the sphere model; the performance of the PARGEN and Barbery corrections varied from case to case.

Paper presented at the 28th International Geological Congress held in Washington DC, July 1989 (International geochemical mapping sessions). The 1986 geochemical survey was successful in recognising all the previously known mineral occurrences of significance in Jamaica, in outlining areas not previously believed to have mineral potential and in stimulating fresh appraisals of old occurrences in terms of their potential for new commodities. This has resulted in a very significant increase in mineral exploration activity in Jamaica

The deposits were formed from low-temperature alteration of pyroclastic rocks. Properties investigated include their cation exchange capacity, swelling capacity, pH, rheological properties, the green and dry compressive strengths, shatter index, wet tensile strength, compactability and permeability. It was found that deposits with abundant opal-CT have poor physical properties. The rheological and swelling properties were found to be influenced by the bentonite grade (smectite content) and the degree of disaggregation of the smectite quasi-crystals. The only deposits of high grade which had good foundry properties were those with no opal-CT. Hydrothermal alteration was detrimental to the physical and chemical properties of bentonites in that it decreased the smectite content and the pH and changed the smectite layer charge and the lattice dimensions

The approach has been applied with success to the restoration of chalk workings in southern England, and research and trials relating to restoration blasting and the replication of limestone dale landforms have been undertaken. An essential prerequisite for application of the technique is rigorous geomorphological analysis of the locality to ensure that final quarry landforms are consistent with the local geomorphological and landscape setting. It is always important to ensure compatibility of the final landform with the intended after-use, and to achieve this it is also essential that such restoration schemes have a sound geotechnical basis. A disadvantage of the approach is that final slopes tend to be flatter, especially in weaker strata where natural slopes are not steep; the implications for reserves may be unacceptable, particularly in quarry extensions

Bi was electrorefined from alloys containing 10-90 wt% Pb, together with Cu and Ag as minor impurities, in a basic cell and in a recessed-channel cell with 27.5:72.5 NaCl-PbCl electrolyte at 450-470 degrees C and 10 000-20 000 A/m2. The voltage in the basic cell was as high as 9 V, with some carryover of Bi to the cathode observed, whereas in the recessed-channel cell it was as low as 285-635 mV. Flow patterns observed in a room-temperature model indicated that the recesses provide both static liquid hold-up and good mixing of the alloy, enhancing cell performance in combination with the reduced anode-cathode distance of 0.90 mm. The purity of the resulting anode product is as high as 99.9%

There is not a single aspect of our future that will go untouched by the communication and computing revolution that Is now upon us. The change we are about to witness will overshadow the impact of the printed word, industrial revolution and physical transport. The next major wave of information technology (TT) development will focus on the delivery of information and experience on demand, in the right form, at the right time, at the right price, to fixed or mobile terminals anywhere, over networks of optical fibre, radio, satellite and optical wireless. Bandwidth, distance and time will no longer be significant cost elements as service and access become dominant.
