The ore, dealt with in this paper, is a certain rutile in Shanxi province, China. A trunk flowsheet with gravity concentration is used, and the TiO2 grade of rutile concentrate is about 90%, but the TiO2 recovery is less than 50%. In order to increase the rutile recovery, the laboratory test, using the truck flowsheet with flotation, is carried out. The flowsheet is that firstly floatable gangue is re-moved by flotation; secondly rutile is recovered by flotation; and thirdly impurity is separated by LIMS, HIMS, gravity concentration and flotation from the rutile concentrate. In rutile flotation, BK423, a phosphonic acid, is used as rutile collector, and Na2SiF6 is used as silicates depressant. The experimental result shows that the recovery of rutile concentrate is improved obviously, and the recovery of ultimate rutile concentrate is 68.01% TiO2 and 84.88% rutile. The TiO2 grade of first concentrate is 95.98%, and the TiO2 recovery is 45.60%. The TiO2 grade of second concentrate is 80.53%, and the recovery is 22.41%. Furthermore, magnetite and ilmenite are recovered in the flowsheet.

Due to detrimental effects of cyanidation process on the environment in gold industry, application of cyanide alternatives such as thiourea are being highly considered in recent projects. In this study, the extraction of gold from poly metal ore, using thiourea was precisely investigated. The representative sample contained 2.5 ppm Au and 160 ppm Ag. The sample was categorized as oxide gold ore, because the main part of its pyrite was changed to iron oxide and hydroxide such as goethite and lepidocrosite. According to mineralogy, the main gangue mineral was quartz. It shows that gold grains are free and interlocked with quartz matrix. Also, the presence of a high amount of silver in free and sulfide forms and also the low content of other sulfide minerals such as base metal sulfides is a remarkable point of these studies. In the gold extraction process with thiourea, there are several parameters that affect the rate of gold dissolution such as concentrations of thiourea as a gold lixiviant and ferric sulfate as an oxidant, pH and size fraction of feed and leaching time. The influence of these parameters on the gold dissolution rate were investigated and optimized. The results showed that the concentration of thiourea is the most influential parameter which could increase the gold recovery to 71% (at 10 g/kg sample). The optimal amount of ferric sulfate was determined as 6 g/kg sample. Also, the optimal levels of size fraction of feed and pH of solution were 88% under 75 micron and 2 as acidity; respectively. Leaching time was 6 hrs. In addition, this sample was leached with cyanide and the optimized values of size fraction of d88=75 microns, pH=10.45, 2500 ppm of sodium cyanide with time leaching of 24 hours were concluded for maximum recovery of gold in solution. Finally, the results of cyanidation tests were compared to the thiourea dissolution after optimizing all affected parameters in cyanidation process.

The aim of the research is to increase the recoverable value of poor, difficult-to-digest complex mineral raw materials. In the Republic Belarus, universal centrifugal-shock devices have been created for crushing, grinding and classification of ore and non-metallic mineral raw materials in dry mode, which differ from foreign analogues by a higher level of resource saving (including electricity and materials). Dry-ore preparation technologies have been tested on a pilot scale: fine crushing (replacing grinding in rod mills), grinding (replacing wet grinding in ball mills) and pneumoclassification on different types of ores, - which made it possible to identify the criteria for the suitability and unsuitability of mineral raw materials for their use. The possibility of regulating the upper and lower limit of the size of the finished material is established, the possibility of reducing the yield of slimes (-0,020 mm) to 5 times is determined. A comparative analysis of the contrast degree of separation characteristics of ore a similar granulometric composition, crushed in wet and dry conditions, is performed. The achieved contrast degree of gravity properties after dry grinding - 104,3; after the wet - 60.2. When enriching on a centrifugal concentrator, gold recovery to the concentrate after dry grinding increased by 13.12% while improving the quality of the concentrate from 78.3 g/t gold to 90.75 g/t. When testing the gravity-flotation scheme for the enrichment of poor gold-quartz ore, the increment of gold extraction after dry grinding was 7.6% for gravity and 9.5% for flotation; the total increase in extraction is 17.1%. The possibility of flotation of a larger material after dry grinding has been proved, with an extraction gain of 1.5% compared to the flotation of thinner material after ball milling. The influence of dry technology on the efficiency of the leaching of gold and silver (an extraction gain of 5.5 to 10%) and heap leaching (extraction gain - up to 18.3%) was studied. The positive influence of dry ore preparation technologies on the efficiency of gold and silver heap leaching and heap leaching, thickening and filtration is proved. Lines of dry ore preparation technologies can be used in modular complexes for processing technogenic raw materials.

The deposit genesis, the ore property, and the mineral characteristics, which has a close relationship with the beneficiablity, could be regarded as the “Genetic Properties”, actually are the determining factors for beneficiation process development. However, in conventional concentrator’s process development and engineering, there have been lack of systematic research and test on those genetic properties, also lack of well-established collecting, statistics and analysis system for those huge amount of data such as the historical mineral processing technique research, process mineralogy study, practical operating and engineering data. Obviously it is far less than enough for profound integration combining modern IT together with traditional mineral processing technology, as a result there are a number of disadvantages in mineral processing R&D and engineering, such as long term, high cost, low efficiency as well as repetitive testwork not making full advantage of previous experiences. Aiming to make utmost of those Genetic Properties and overcome above disadvantages in mineral processing R&D and engineering, the concept of “Genetic Mineral Processing Engineering (GMPE)” is put forwarded, and the strategical study has been conducted on this regard, with the main focus on following aspects: a) Testing and extraction of the “Genetic Properties”; b) Establishment of data base and data warehouse of GMPE; c) Intelligent decision making system for beneficiation process; d) Verification testwork; e) Virtual concentrator. The technical route proposed is to firstly conduct research and test on those Genetic Properties mentioned above, based on that the specific data base will be set up and applied for intelligent process recommendation and simulation with a few verification testwork conducted in the meantime, finally achieve a fast, high efficiency and precise determination of technology and process for ore beneficiation. The systematic study on the three-in-one GMPE would make an innovative breakthrough in conventional mineral process testwork research and engineering methodology, and provide technical support for the concentrator’s design and upgrading.

Selective flocculation of iron minerals could improve the economics of high intensity magnetic separation as concomitant process. When the minerals are finely disseminated is necessary a finer grinding to be applied which generates a lot of slimes. The HIMS is not enough efficient for particles below 20 microns ? territory where the selective flocculation is already well known industrial practice, so the combination of these two methods of beneficiation can bring a higher grade at high recovery to be achieved. The dynamics and selectivity of the precipitation process is studied in batch tests with flocculant starch and dispersants sodium silicate and sodium hexametaphosphate. The influence of preliminary conditioning with nitrogen acid at pH 2 before flocculation is also investigated. Flowsheet including these two methods is tested and the distribution of iron is shown.

A red copper plate, discovered in the ruins of Dachengshan in Hebei province, was recognized as a forged one rather than a cast one, which means it was probably made from natural copper during the Longshan Culture period (2200~2208 BC) in the Chinese history. The copperware, found in the Niangniang Tai relics in Wuwei city, Gansu province, contains 99.6% copper and 0.4% Sn, Pb, Sb and Ni, which was guessed to be made during the Qijia Culture about 2000~ 1900 BC in the Chinese history in the late Neolithic before Shang dynasty. This shows that Chinese ancestors were able to distinguish, sort and use some native metals and minerals more than 4000 years ago.

"In the Inco matte separation process, a slow-cooled converter matte is separated into three main discrete mineral phases: chalcocite (Cc), heazlewoodite (Hz) and a Cu-Ni-Fe alloy. After magnetic removal of the alloy, Cc and Hz are separated by flotation at pH>12 with diphenyl guanidine (DPG) as both collector and frother. High selectivity is achieved in rougher flotation. However, in later flotation stages such as in the middlings circuit, as oxidation takes place, Hz becomes highly floatable, resulting in a very poor separation between Cc and Hz.Starch and dextrin as Hz depressants were evaluated on the middlings circuit feed and showed no positive impact on Cc/Hz separation selectivity. Ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) extraction showed the existence of abundant surface Cu and Ni ions. The use of triethylene triamine (TETA) or EDTA in flotation did not improve Cc/Hz separation selectivity. Microflotation tests were carried out on pure synthetic Cc and Hz minerals. It was found that Hz did not float in the presence of DPG. However, Hz conditioned with either copper sulfate solution or in contact with Cc floated readily in the presence of DPG. It is concluded that the major reason for Hz flotation in the middlings circuit is due to Cc oxidation releasing Cu ions that adsorb on the Hz surface making it reactive with DPG thus rendering the Hz floatable."

The analysis of particle capture by an air bubble by two separate phenomena of collision and attachment has been difficult due to the uncertainty in determining when and where the two phenomena begin and terminate at the bubble surface, respectively. Therefore, a unified analysis was developed by solving the motion equation for the particle capture as one process. No distinction be-tween collision and attachment was made. Both the liquid film described by the micro-hydrodynamic resistance functions and the surface forces were included in the new model. The model predictions with the DLVO (Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek) surface forces did not agree with the experimental trajectories of latex and silica spheres. The model predictions with the inclusion of the non-DLVO attractive surface force agreed with the experimental data. The non-DLVO force reduced the repulsion between the non-attaching particle and the bubble, and significantly increased the attraction between the attaching particle and the bubble. The unified analysis is capable of predicting particle capture without the use of the induction time. The unified analysis also shows significant influence of the short-range hydrodynamic interactions on the collision which has been previously ignored.

The nitrate content is an important factor for environmental water samples and flour. In a 0.35 mol/L H2SO4-2NO solution, has a strong catalyzing function on the decolourization of Gallocya-nine (GC) oxidated by NaBrO3. Based on this, a novel method was developed to measure the NO and -3NO concentrations in water and flour. The flow injection technology was introduced into the analysis system. A single-valve dual- cingulums to inject which the Copperized-Cadmium slice and the reduction zone are isolated. The optimum solution for this method contains 1.48×10-4 mol/L GC, 0.06 mol /L NaBrO3 and 0.2 mol /L of NH4-2NOCl. Two empirical equations were proposed to calculate the and -3NO concentrations based on the measured signals. It can be used to measure -2NO of from 0.001 mg / L to 2.0 mg/L and -3NO of from 0.002 mg / L to 2.5 mg/L. The measurement frequency can be up to 20 samples / h. The relative standard deviation for eleven samples is less than 5%.

In sulfide mineral flotation, the efficiency of separation is severely affected by the presence of non-sulfide gangue minerals, such as altered silicates and serpentines. Although this is an acknowledged fact, most studies in mineral processing have focused on value minerals, and studies on gangue minerals affecting flotation performance are quite rare, and even those that do are limited in scope. This paper is an attempt to highlight the use of grade-recovery curves in studying the effects of gangue minerals. Specifically, we present the flotation response of problematic Ni and Cu ores which show highly uncharacteristic but similar grade-recovery characteristics despite the very different mineralogy and try to understand this behavior and the underlying mechanism. Finally, we propose chemical modifiers as solutions to overcome the detrimental effects of these gangue minerals and improve efficiency of flotation performance. Large-scale separation or flotation cells, used in the primary extraction in the oil sands industry, are integral parts of the overall process of bitumen extraction. Good regulation of the interface level between the bitumen froth and the middlings in these cells can result in a significant improvement in bitumen recovery and throughput, and heavily influence process economics. Automatic control of such industrial processes presents challenges such as multi-phase flow dynamics, variable process gain and time delays, poor quality of measurements and significant disturbances. This paper details a case study application of development of multiple models of the dynamics of the interface level and the design of model predictive controllers (MPC) for a separation cell process. A Model predictive controller (MPC) using linear models is designed and implemented in real time on an industrial separation cell. The industrial implementation results show that the MPC scheme provides significant benefits over the current operations which use a PID controller. The benefits include significant reduction in the variance of the interface level resulting in higher bitumen recovery and smoother downstream operation plus energy savings due to reduced underflow pump speed.

"From a lifecycle point of view, biologically digested sludge is a valuable product that should be reused if possible. Sludge may be applied to agricultural land for further sludge treatment and improvement of the characteristics of the soil. The characteristics of sludge that affect its applicability for soil conditioning include moisture content, pathogens, nutrients and metals. In this paper, the use of solid anaerobic digestion sludge of the lignocellulosic residues to condition soil was investigated in regards to nutrient composition, water content/retention capacity, hygienic quality (contamination of pathogenic bacteria) and heavy metal adsorbing/releasing characteristics of the sludge.It was found that the digested sludge had approximately 44.5% free and immobilized water and 46.9% bound water. The water-holding capacity of the sludge was high. This was a merit to apply the sludge to agriculture in dry areas. Anaerobic digestion under thermophilic conditions showed a promising disinfecting effect to the sludge, in contrast to the landfill digestion. The anaerobic digestion sludge could be considered as a humus-rich hygienic product that improves soil fertility and water holding capacity, nourishes plants and immobilizes heavy metals in the environment"

The aim of this paper was to study the influence of different water/organic solvent mixtures (isopropyl alcohol, ethanol and ethylene glycol) on the gold desorption process. The experimental work was carried out on laboratory scale, using activated coconut carbon with different temperatures and extraction times, without adding cyanide. Best results have been obtained in this order: isopropyl alcohol > ethylene glycol > ethanol. Starting from gold concentration of about 5 g Au per kg of carbon, best kinetics resulted in 97-100% of gold extraction, after 8 hours of desorption, at a temperature of 80ºC.

A large amount of polluted sludge is produced by a nonferrous metal factory after treating waste water with lime/ferrous salt. The concentration of arsenic in the dried sludge is high to 5.84%, a toxicity test is taken on the sludge according to GB5085.3-2007 and the extraction content is 15.75mg/L, which surpasses the arsenic extraction standard [As]=5mg/L, the sludge is categorized as hazardous waste. If put outside without disposal, it would be very harmful to environments. Here we report an optimum protocol to extract arsenic; S2- alkaline liquor is utilized to treat the arsenic sludge. At 85?, 10L 7% S2- liquor is added into 1kg dried sludge and the resulting mixture is stirred for 120min at 250r/min, then separated by centrifugation and the compressed waste residue dried naturally. The average arsenic content is 1.40mg/L, lower than GB5085.3-2007 Standard and arsenic-free residue is consistent with GB18598-2001 Standard, which can be bury safely. The extracted arsenic is transferred into copper arsensite for use as addictive in copper electrolysis and the waste water can be recycle after calcium is removed.

"The mineralogical and physico-chemical characteristics of a polymetallic sample from a mine of West Serbia suggest that it can be classified as a SEDEX type of ore. Those ores contain multiple value components, being inter-dispersed as fine grained aggregates. This prevents concentration by gravity or flotation concentration processes. Mineralogically, the valuable metals (Cu;Zn;Pb;Au and Ag) occur as pyrite, sphalerite, galena, tetrahedrite, chalcopyrite, covellite, arsenopyrite, and non-metallic minerals (barite, and waste minerals). Novel technologies are under development within this project for the recovery of all valuable metals from this very complex material. The work comprises the further treatment of solid residue obtained after Cu and Zn extraction by bioleaching, for the subsequent recovery of Pb and the precious metals Ag and Au. The residue is first treated with a saturated sodium chloride solution, whereupon a chloride solution of lead (NaPbCl3) is obtained. From the chloride solution, lead was deposited in the form of lead carbonate, followed by reductive melting, whereupon lead anode was obtained. Electrolytic refining of the lead anode, using a solution of PbCO3 in methane sulphonic acid (MSA-Methanesulfonic acid, min 99.5% CH4O3S, density 1.48 kg/dm3, Manufacturer: Carl Roth) as an electrolyte, yielded refined lead cathode. It should be noted that, after precipitation and separation of lead carbonate, the sodium chloride solution is restored to its original composition by the addition of make-up reagents and returned for another lead-sulfate leaching cycle. The solid residue obtained after leaching lead-sulphate, is leached in thiosulphate solution, with the addition of an activator, a catalyst and lixiviant for gold, to yield a thiosulphate solution of gold and silver. Since the content of gold and silver in solution is low (below 1 mg/dm3), they are first electrolytically concentrated on steel cathode and then refined to pure metals using well-known chemical methods. Note that, after the electrolytic separation of gold and silver, thiosulphate solution is recycled to the leaching step."

Mongolia has some of the world?s largest coal reserves with an estimated total coal reserve of over 150 billion tonnes. At present, over 90% of Mongolian electricity is produced by combined heat and thermal power stations. The main coal deposits used for Central power system's power stations are Baganuur, Shivee-ovoo lignite type coal and Shariin gol bituminous coal. In Mongolia almost 600,000 tonnes of coal combustion by-products are disposed of in waste ponds. In this research, we have thoroughly characterized Mongolian coal combustion by-products including fly ashes sourced directly from thermal power stations and ash retrieved from ponds. It was determined that fly ashes generated from Baganuur and Shivee-ovoo coal deposits are class C, while ash from Shariin gol coal is class F (according the ASTM C618). All ash products were characterized by chemical, mineralogical, granulometrical, porosity, FE-SEM and radiation methods. Fly ashes sourced directly from power stations were found to be more suitable for manufacture of geopolymers for building materials application and zeolite synthesis than ashes retrieved from ash ponds. The adsorption and porous properties of zeolitic compounds were measured and found to be suitable for adsorption of Cr6+ from simulated tannery waste water. "Chromite ore is an indispensable raw material in the manufacture of ferro-chrome and charge-chrome, which are used for the production of stainless and other alloy steels. The demand for chromite ore is ever increasing because of increasing consumption of these steels. Keeping this in view, Tata Steel is keen to recover values from fines and wastes, and also to produce value added products from their captive chromite mines and its processing plants.Tata Steel has its captive chromite resources at Sukinda, Orissa. They contain two ore types, i.e. (i) Ferruginous and (ii) Siliceous. The generation of off-grade ores is an increasing trend and simultaneously customer quality requirements are becoming ever more stringent. The ferruginous type ore also contains a considerable quantity of in-situ fines (~20% particles below 0.5 mm) that compound the beneficiation problem.In many places, in India and abroad, mined non-marketable off-grade and low grade chromite ores are upgraded by using either simple classification techniques like screw classification, hydrosizing, hydrocycloning or conventional gravity concentration processes such as Heavy media separation, Jigging, Spiraling, Tabling etc.At Tata Steel, the ferruginous type ores are treated in Chrome Ore Beneficiation (COB) Plant that comprises: a crushing and grinding circuit; a classification circuit using hydrocyclones; and a beneficiation circuit using 4 stage spirals in the coarse circuit (-0.5+0.1 mm) and 3 stage spirals & tables in the fine circuit (-0.1+0.038 mm). In this process, 3 types of tailings are being generated and together analyses about 17 % Cr2O3, which is high. From the present operation the chromite recovery is around 70% and could not produce coarse concentrates (+0.5 mm size). Whereas the siliceous type ore is treated in the Lumpy Ore Processing (LOP) plant, consisting of crushing-washing & classification-hand sorting operations, to produce marketable grade lumpy ore and –10 mm de-slimed fines. These fines are intermittently treated in the COB plant. The higher silica content (greater than 1%) and low Cr/Fe ratio (less than 2.8) are the problems with these concentrates."

The solvent extraction section of an old Uranium Plant in the Vaal River region produced a sub-stance called Crud (Chalk River Unidentified Deposit) that formed within the aqueous/organic interface of the settler of the solvent extraction circuit. The crud was deposited together with gold tailings to the tailings dam many years ago. Previous research done on the crud confirmed that ex-posed crud leaches Mn and Ni at concentrations that are well above their acceptable risk limits as well as Zn that leaches at concentrations that are slightly lower than its acceptable risk limit. Soil washing and bioremediation technologies were employed to treat the contaminated soil. Various laboratory test work and the pilot scale studies were conducted in parallel with each other and the results of the laboratory studies were used to determine critical parameters. Four lixiviants, i.e. sulphuric acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid and ethylene diamine acetic acid were tested at three concentration levels i.e. 0.001M, 0.0001M and 0.00001M, respectively. Column tests showed that the leaching of the heavy metals increases as the soil porosity increases. Silica sand was added to increase porosity of the contaminated soil. Highest Mn removal was achieved mainly by sulphuric and oxalic acid at 0.001M at all soil levels. EDTA was significantly efficient in the removal of Ni and Zn. The recovery of heavy metals, particularly Mn, decreased as the depth of sampling in-creased. Heterogeneous bacteria and filamentous organism plate counts were conducted to evaluate the growth of the bacteria and filamentous organisms in the soil. Results showed that more organism growth took place in the bioremediated soil with a fertilizer added to it. The leaching of metals from the soil that was bioremediated in the pilot study was generally higher than the extraction of the metals from the soil that was leached with no bioremediation carried out. The results from this study suggest that the leaching of heavy metals from the contaminated soil is to a large extent dependant on the pH of the leaching solution. By increasing the soil?s porosity and bioremediating the soil, higher extractions of metals were achieved.

An investigation into the hydrophobic aggregation of ultrafine smithsonite in surfactant solution has been undertaken through a combination of hydrophobic flocculation experiments, zeta potential measurements, surface tension measurements, and contact angle measurements. The experimental results have revealed that the behaviors of hydrophobic aggregation were closely correlated with the particle hydrophobicity, but they were not lowered byte change of the particle surface charges due to surfactants adsorption. On the other hand, the liquid (solution) surface tension (?LV) plays an important role in hydrophobic aggregation, and the hydrophobic aggregation could not occur below the critical liquid (solution) surface tension (?c). Meanwhile, this flocculation has been observed to require sufficient stirring strength and magnitudes of kinetic energy input to achieve the maximum aggregation degree. From the microflotation results, it has been found that the flotation kinetics response of smithsonite fines is markedly improved due to sufficient stirring strength, and the stirring strength influenced the floc flotation in a manner quite similar to their influence on the hydrophobic aggregation, suggesting that the formation of hydrophobic flocs is a promising means to recover smithsonite in the fine size range.
