Remediation and restoration of offshore marine habitats is a relatively new concept with attempts in European regions largely being instigated by requirements of various strategic directives including Article 2 of the Habitats Directive (1992), the EC Water Framework Directive (2000, Article 2 of the OSPAR Convention (1992) and the developing European Marine Strategy Directive. A field experiment to establish the practicality of various options for rehabilitating the seabed on the cessation of dredging has been successfully set-up. The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the practicality and effectiveness of gravel seeding as a potential restorative method which could be applied at marine aggregate extraction sites following cessation of dredging. Zone 2, within Area 408 (offshore Humber) was chosen as the experimental site as there is some evidence for persistence of sand which may have resulted from screening operations at this site.

The Neptune Group was established in 1999 to apply for exploration permits within New Zealand’s 200nm EEZ. These applications were to investigate and commercialise hydrothermal Seafloor Massive Sulphide (SMS) deposits identified by international researchers and to locate others. SMS are volcanically related seafloor accumulations of copper, lead and zinc with high levels of gold and silver. Neptune has three granted exploration licenses within the New Zealand EEZ and has application in other jurisdictions. Neptune undertook the world’s first commercial drilling exploration work of SMS in December of 2005.

Nautilus Minerals is the world leader in exploration and development of deep ocean seafloor massive sulphide (SMS) resources. The company is currently focused on generating its resource pipeline in the Western Pacific and its first development project for recovery of high-grade copper, gold and silver mineralisation from its Solwara 1 site in the Bismarck Sea, Papua New Guinea. The Solwara 1 site is located at a water depth of 1,600 ? 1,800 meters. Over 150 SMS seafloor surface samples have been collected from chimney structures during dives made by remote operated vehicles (ROVs). In order to obtain an understanding of the sub-surface mineralisation, Nautilus carried out 4 drilling programs between 2006 and 2010 which allowed the calculation of a Canadian NI43-101 compliant resource estimate. The initial 2006 campaign was based on conventional offshore surface driven drill equipment. In conjunction with the subsea remote technology industry, Nautilus subsequently developed an ROV operated seafloor drill system with improved drill core recovery and efficiency. This technology was developed further with a 2010 - 2011 drill program to increase the available geological knowledge at Solwara 1 and adjacent prospects. his paper will provide an overview of Nautilus? SMS drilling requirements and recap the evolution of drilling technology and operations undertaken at Solwara 1 from 2006 to 2011. The paper will also discuss the potential of further developments in drilling techniques and equipment to increase or improve drilling depth, efficiency and data quality.

This paper presents the results of theoretical investigations of the energy requirements of the hydraulic lifting of mined materials from the seabed to the sea surface in the deep-sea mining of solid minerals such as manganese nodules in the Clarion-Clipperton region of the Pacific, situated on the sea floor in water depths of 4,500 m or more. The principal element of the developed underwater transport system is the Underwater Chamber, which is connected by flexible pipeline to a mining machine that gathers nodules from the seabed, mixes them with seawater, and feeds them into a flexible pipeline. In this paper, we discuss the question of the optimum water depth for placement of the Chamber, the interior of which is designed to maintain a 1-atmosphere pressure. We present a method for calculating this depth as it relates to the mechanical characteristics of solid particles, the shapes and size distributions of the particles, particle and slurry density, and other properties. These investigations were carried out in hydro-transport laboratory of the Saint-Petersburg Mining Institute and the hydraulic laboratory of Faculty Environmental Engineering in Wroclaw Agricultural University. Dredging tends to be either horizontal or vertical. In each case solids have to be disengaged from the deposit, mobilized, acquired and elevated or translated. One means of elevation is the airlift. Elevation and translation of essentially granular material nay be by jet pump or centrifugal pump. Any of the three types may be used on its own. The airlift and jet pump may he combined for vertical transport and the centrifugal and jet pumps for predominantly horizontal. Both suction point and pipework must have a means of deployment from the surface or from a submerged vehicle or merely a diver. An airlift is an energetic system, having a source of energy and a means of storing it. It therefore will be difficult to prevent oscillation -surging. A centrifugal pump has a characteristic that bends over at low flow rate and is therefore intrinsically unsuitable for pumping solids. The result is blockage, operation at high velocity and correspondingly high wear rates or operation at low concentration of solids and correspondingly low efficiency. The jet pump is intrinsically exceptionally stable but has a low hydraulic efficiency. The jet pump-airlift hybrid prevents or reduces surging and increases system efficiency away from the optimum depth for airlift operation. Delivered solids concentration is increased. The jet pump-centrifugal pump hybrid totally prevents pipeline blockages and increases the productivity from a given pipeline size. For a given energy input the average production is typically doubled. For example, the Indian River Delaware bypassing pipeline transmits an overall day-in-day-out average of 500t/h (tonnes) of sand down a 10.86" diameter line.

Two marine diamond deposits on concession 2b off Namaqualand along the South African Coast, have been systematically mined over the past year by the mv Moonstar. The two deposits, Smith?s Ulcer and Wedge Point Basin, are comparable in morphology, straddled the same water depths and have similar geology yet have given very different recoveries when compared to their respective grade models. These differences are best ascribed to the different style of mineralisation observed within the two deposits which has been directly controlled by the bedrock morphology. The smith?s Ulcer deposit has been formed in a metagreywacke bedrock displaying a strong north-south trending foliation which dips steeply to the west. Consequently the mineralisation is confined to narrow north-south linear trends with limited lateral extent (less than 5m) making extraction extremely difficult and somewhat variable. RE factors (recovered grade versus estimated grade) for this deposit range from 0.5 to 1.1. The Wedge Point Basin deposit is formed in a micaceous metaquartzite with a conjugate southwest northwest joint set, the southwest lineation being the more prominent, and structural foliation dipping gently to the west. The resultant style of mineralisation is confined to basinal features defined by topographical lows and is fairly lateral in extent (in order of 50m). Extraction of the mineralisation from this deposit is less arduous with recoveries more uniform, RE factors are frequently in the range 2 - 3. This style of mineralisation is more in line with what is to be expected from marine alluvial deposits, the nugget effect of diamond concentration being responsible for the high RE factor. The long narrow linear trends observed in Smith?s Ulcer demonstrably require a specialised approach in successfully sampling, modeling and ultimately mining.

There are two environmental issues which have only recently begun to need planning in detail for marine mining. One is the environmental consequences of mine closure; the other is environmental terrorism. In principle it is not difficult to predict the pattern and rate of biodiversity recovery after mine closure on metalliferous depositional seabeds. 1-5 years to a self-sustaining community of organisms is a generalized guideline, depending on depth and particulate composition. The rate and pattern of biodiversity recovery on some metalliferous hard-rock habitats is far less predictable due to the patchiness and rareness of the habitat. Ecoterrorism at mines, whether on-land or marine, is now to be expected. A good example of resource industry ecoterrorism is the fire-bombing of logging and cement trucks in Oregon in 2001. But there have also been bombs at mine sites, as at Asbestos, Quebec. It is also possible to regard some resource-loss lawsuits as frivolous, hence forms of ecoharassment. Marine mining operations should take note of the development of environmental terrorism (and terrorism in general) and its various manifestations and impacts. Potentially these range from minor work stoppage inconveniences, to serious financial risk jeopardizing the economics of a mine, to jail for company executives, managers and environmental staff, and to harassment and killing of mine personnel.

The land phosphate deposits of the U.S. southeastern coastal plain have long been a major factor in the world trade of phosphate rock (Fig. 1). As recently as 1979, deposits of North Carolina and Florida alone accounted for about 33 percent of the entire world's phosphate exports. This situation is changing, however. World production increased by ~9 %, yet the U.S. share was down to ~28% in 1984. A complex interaction of economic and political factors combined with increasing costs of raw materials, production, and transportation have led to this systematic erosion of the U.S. market share. Changing land-use patterns within the southeast, environmental pressures, exhaustion of shallow high-grade resources in Central Florida, and the increased pressure from expanding low-cost production in other countries throughout the world account for much of the present difficulty in the U.S. phosphate industry. Considering this depressed environment -- what are the prospects for development of offshore resources? A summary of new research on offshore phosphorite within the U.S. Exclusive Economic. Zone (EEZ), as well as an attempt to place possible development of these resources within the current economic setting, is the purpose of this presentation. We will emphasize work in progress on a major offshore deposit along the U.S. Atlantic Margin as well as new research on Pacific Ocean occurrences of phosphorite on seamounts and insular slopes within U.S. waters.

The future exploitation of crust deposits will require a dependable characterization system. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines (Bureau) initiated research to develop a new sampling dredge by conducting a series of cutting and physical property tests on previously collected cobalt-rich manganese crust and substrate samples. Using the engineering parameters derived from these tests, a large, heavy dredge was designed and tested. This heavy dredge was capable of fragmenting and collecting in situ crust, but it created handling problems for the research vessel, thus an aggressive cutting, light-weight dredge was conceived and fabricated. The light-weight dredge is capable of fragmenting and collecting crust and some talus. This dredge can be used on flat or rough seabed terrains. It can be easily retrieved from hang ups and reset to sample again.

The University of New South Wales Mining Research Centre (UMRC) has a longstanding research reputation in mining research, with particular expertise in mining systems, mining geomechanics and excavation engineering. The UMRC is now focusing this expertise on the potential of mining Seafloor Massive Sulphides (SMS). The UMRC has initiated a three-year research project that will identify and examine the requirements to effectively and efficiently mine SMS deposits. The major aims of this project are: ? To develop an understanding of the geomechanical characteristics and local physical environmental conditions associated with a ?typical? SMS deposit. ? To develop and evaluate a range of both conventional and innovative excavation processes for mining SMS deposits, and define the engineering parameters required for each extraction option, and ? To identify the materials handling and lifting requirements of the ?mined? SMS material, and the possible integration of the lifting system with the excavation processes considered.

"In July 2016 the International Seabed Authority (the “ISA”) released a first working draft of its mineral exploitation regulations as well as the standard contract terms for mineral resources in the Area, for which stakeholder input was sought in late 2016. In January of 2017 the ISA released a discussion paper on environmental matters related to these draft regulations. The ISA is now in the process of further developing its draft exploitation regulations and standard contract terms to ensure that seabed mining is carried out in an environmentally sound way for the common benefit of mankind.As the regulator of the “Area”, the ISA can draw lessons from onshore mining regulators and offshore petroleum regulators for their experiences in legislative drafting to smoothly and safely oversee project development, implementation, and closure. However, one of the unique challenges that the ISA faces in regulating private industry is its status as an international organization and not a sovereign nation, which results in a significantly different legal relationship between the regulator and the regulated. The result is that the exploitation contract is the sole legal connection between the mining proponent and the regulator for the exploitation phrase of the project.Accordingly, in the regulatory development process, the ISA must carefully consider which rights and obligations are set out in the exploitation contract versus the regulations. This decision will dictate the flexibility the ISA will have to modernize the conduct required of mining proponents in response to changing best practices in the industry, technological progress, and advances in the understanding of the marine ecosystem. As the first working draft of the exploitation regulations sets out an initial contract period of twenty years, it is crucial for the ISA to carefully consider the rights, obligations, and procedures it agrees to in the exploitation contract, as unilateral amendment will not be possible after contract execution."

During the last ten years seven applications for nodule-bearing areas of the World Ocean Floor International Region (IR) have been made by national companies of Russia (Yuzhmorgeologiya), France (IFREMER/AFERNOD), Japan (DORD), India (The State Department of Sea Resources Development), China (COMRA), Korea (KORDI) and the Interokeanmetal Joint Organization (IOM) of some East European countries and have been registered by the Preparatory Commission of the United Nations International Seabed Authority (ISA). Besides these groups registered within Resolution 11 of the Final Act of the III United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea there are four international consortia registered in the USA [Kennecott (KCON), Ocean Mining Associates (DMA), Ocean Management Incorporated (OMI), and Ocean Minerals Company (OMCO)], which have interest in areas in the IR and can be considered as potential applicants. All registered areas (with the exception of the Indian Ocean) including the areas of potential applicants and also 6 areas, reserved for the ISA are located in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone of the Pacific Ocean. If within each area not less than one deposit of polymetallic nodule-bearing ores can be discovered, then, the total number of such deposits, for the present moment, is 20.

"Germany, like several other countries, has entered a contract with the International Seabed Authority (ISA) to explore the prospects of commercial manganese nodule mining in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ). Ensuring a maximally sustainable deep-sea mining operation requires a thorough understanding of the environmental impacts associated with every step of the mining process from the extraction of the nodules at the seafloor to the refinery on land. Against this background, the project presented here applies a combination of scenario-building and life cycle assessment (LCA) to assess and evaluate the sustainability performance of the individual process steps as well as the entire mining operation.Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a comprehensive methodological framework that allows the identification and quantification of impacts occurring during a products life-cycle, as well as the analysis and evaluation of their contribution to pre-defined impact categories, such as climate change, acidification and toxicity (Rebitzer et al., 2004). Until now, LCAs with a focus on raw material extraction have almost exclusively been applied to terrestrial processes. Noteworthy exceptions are offshore drilling, offshore wind farms and ocean fishing. Hence, the first part of the project is to investigate in how far LCA can be applied to deep-sea settings and if and in what way it could be adapted to be used in a deep-sea mining context."

Ocean floor sulfide deposits are now known from many parts of the world mid-ocean ridge system and from some seamounts. Clearly they can be expected to occur commonly on the ocean floor. However, only two or three of the known deposits appear to approach the million-ton size, and in none of the deposits has the grade been well-defined. Can knowledge of the processes that happen within the hydrothermal plumbing below deposits help define the conditions under which large, high-grade deposits form? Here I review present knowledge of ocean-floor hydrothermal processes to attempt a first answer to this question. There are three sources of information about these processes. The solutions emerging from active systems must be compatible with patterns of alteration that underlie the volcanogenic sulfide deposits of ophiolite complexes, which are slices of ocean crust thrust onto land. Both of these types of evidence can be linked by computer modelling of the exchange of heat and metals between rocks and flowing water.

The Early Norian Windy Craggy massive sulfide deposit is within the allochthonous Alexander terrane of the Insular tectonic belt in extreme northwestern British Columbia (Figure 1). Host rocks are the Middle Tats Volcanics, part of an informally-named volcano-sedimentary succession of mixed graphitic argillites and mafic pillowed and massive volcanic flows and sills of Upper Triassic age (Figure 2) that have suffered only lower greeschist-facies metamorphism. The volcanic rocks are light rare earth element (LREE)-enriched and display a variably developed back-arc subduction signature. Major and trace element compositions of the host argillite show that it contains an appreciable hydrothermal component, as evidenced by low high Fe and Mn contents. These sediments therefore record steady, continuous hydrothermal activity punctuated by intermittent turbidity currents sweeping into the basin. The deposit consists of at least two discrete sulfide lenses (the North and South Sulfide Bodies), as shown in Figure 3, a level plan at the elevation of the exploration workings. Published reserves at 0.5% copper cut-off are 297.4 million tonnes grading 1.38% Cu, 0.08% Co, 0.21 g/t Au and 3.9 g/t Ag (as of December 1991). However, the deposit is larger than this and further drilling is required to delineate it completely. Mineralization comprises massive sulfide, stringer/stockwork, and finely bedded to laminated sulfides and exhalites. Stockwork mineralization consists of sulfide-quartz-chlorite veins with attendant chlorite and silica alteration. Mineralization consists predominantly of massive pyrrhotite andlor pyrite with lesser chalcopyrite and magnetite. Figure 4 is an oblique section through the North Sulfide Body, the most northerly sulfide mass shown in Figure 3, which shows the distribution of the pyrite and pynhotite-rich massive mineralization and the stringer zone. The North Sulfide Body contains appreciable sphalerite, whereas the South Sulfide Body contains only trace amounts. A new data set of cobalt-rich ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) crust chemistry has been completed for the first detailed sampling of a latitudinal crossing of the Pacific equatorial zone of high biological productivity. Samples were collected in January-March, 1999, during the AVON 2 cruise aboard the R.V. Melville, Scripps Institute of Oceanography. Samples were collected from 4.6° N to 9.2° S latitudes along two ridges, the Marshall Islands-Gilbert Islands ridge (4.6° N to 3.5° S) and the Howland Island-Tokelau Islands ridge (1° N to 9.2° S). The two ridges are offset east-west in the region of overlapping latitudinal sampling by about 466 km. We determined the concentrations of 48 elements for 147 samples from 39 dredge hauls taken on 33 seamounts and island flanks that occur between the Marshall Islands to the northwest and Samoa to the southeast. Element concentrations can be examined as varying spatially and with water depth in the ocean and we examine those relationships based on statistical analysis of the chemical and spatial data. The mean Fe/Mn ratio of 1 and mean Co content of 4645 ppm are typical of West Pacific hydrogenetic crusts; but the mean Co content is low compared to those of some equatorial North Pacific sites, such as the Marshall Islands and Johnston Island EEZs. In contrast, the mean Cu concentration (1540 ppm) is 35% higher than the mean concentration for Pacific Ocean Fe-Mn crusts (998 ppm). Another striking difference is the 40% higher Ba concentrations (mean 3107 ppm) compared to typical Central and West Pacific crusts (mean 1876 ppm); but Ba concentrations are lower than those in California continental-margin Fe-Mn crusts (mean 4085 ppm). A final significant difference in Fe-Mn crust chemistry is Zr concentrations, mean 921 ppm (maximum 1523 ppm), which is about 30% higher in this data set compared to the previously determined mean value of 613 ppm for Central and West Pacific crusts. Zirconium has a strong positive correlation with Ba and a weak positive correlation with Mn.

The western continental margin comprises of the southwest coast (Cape Comorin-Mangalore), centralwest coast or Konkan coast (Mangalore-Bombay), northwest coast (Bombay-Gulf of Kutch) and the Laccadives area. Placer deposits of heavy minerals occur in discontinuous patches on the beaches along many parts of the west coast. The richest offshore placer deposits occur along the 25 km stretch of the southwest coast from Neendakara to Kayamkulam. The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) surveys show that the sediments off the Konkan coast consist largely of silty sand, sandy silt and clay and the concentration of ilmenite is higher than the onshore. The heavy mineral concentration ranges up to 90% and has mainly ilmenite and magnetite with minor quantities of apatite, rutile, zircon, kyanite etc. The heavy mineral sands extend below the clays to water depth down to 20 m. The heavy minerals sands vary in thickness from 2-10 m. Offshore placers can be mined by using wire-line, bucket ladder and hydraulic dredges. Wire-line, bucket ladder and hydraulic dredges. Wire-line dredges may employ drag buckets or clamshell and hydraulic dredges suction or airlift principles. The dredges can be located on flat bottom or catamaran barges. Dredging of very near shore placers may be achieved by operating from land. The bucket ladder type of dredger has greater digging ability and hence can be deployed for mining placers which are partly consolidated or cemented or where the most valuable part of the deposit lies at the contact between the alluvium and the bedrock. This type operates very economically up to 45 m depth and needs minimum power requirement per unit dredged. Suction type hydraulic dredges can be operated very effectively up to 60 m water depths. This system is quite ideal for the inner shelf. The maximum practical economic working water depths for wire-line dredges are about 150 m. With the drag bucket modified into large net buckets, the method can be utilized to greater depths. They can be used in areas of high water currents and swells. The type of bucket can be changed readily with change in the nature of alluvium or substratum. The hydraulic suction dredge is the most suitable system for mining unconsolidated sediments. When the sediments are semi-unconsolidated, a cutter head can be mounted on the lower end of the suction pipe to agitate the seabed.

KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) has been doing various kinds of research works in marine minerals and energy resources exploration and utilization since early 1990s in Korea. In the presentation, the authors will introduce the recent research and development activities mainly focusing on the rare earth metals of the Pacific deep seabed Mn-nodules and gas hydrates which occur from Korean deep waters. KIGAM has been participating in the polymetallic manganese nodule exploration, mining and metal-extraction project, which is modulated by KIOST (Korea Institute of Ocean Sciences and Technology, formerly KORDI). Now KIGAM puts more focus on extracting precious and rare earth metals from the Mn-nodule as well as underlying sediments. The rare earth elements (REE) from seabed mineral deposits also draw attention to those countries including Korea which are lack in natural resources. KIGAM is doing several kinds of leaching experiments using various kinds of reagents under the different experimental parameters. Extraction of rare earth metals from deep sea nodule using H2SO4 and HCl solution showed good leaching effect. As the gas hydrates are to be evaluated as a new future energy resource globally, Korean government has initiated national R/D program covering fundamental exploration survey for resources assessment in Korean deep waters and production technology development. One of the obstacles during the initial phases of project development is the assessment of the environmental impact. Mining residue, consisting of fine seafloor sediments, are to be discharged subsea to mitigate the impact of these suspended particles. In order to test the effectiveness of discharging in proximity of the seabed, a numerical model is developed within the open source software package OpenFoam. Dedicated laboratory experiments for numerical model validation are discussed within this paper. INTRODUCTION Siltation is considered one of the major pressures on the environment for a seabed mining operation. Siltation is defined as the pollution of water by a high concentration of suspended sediments like clay or silt. This can be caused by two main activities during the mining process: the spill loss during the excavation and the return flow of undesired seafloor sediment after ore filtration on the ship. In a concentrated cloud, these fine particles form a so-called turbidity plume. Prediction of the size of these plumes and the created layer thickness of deposited sediment is a crucial part of the environmental impact assessment. The challenge in predicting the behaviour of these plumes is found in the wide range of scales involved in the process. At the point of origin, the turbidity plumes spread mainly under the influence of turbulent whirls created by an initial momentum and a buoyancy difference due to the presence of the suspended sediment particles. If carried by ambientcurrents, these plumes can spread for several kilometres before blending in the background.

The geodiversity of seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) deposits at the slow- and ultra-slow spreading ridges is of great variety (Fouquet et al., 2010). Tectonics and magmatism are the two principal factors which control SMS formation and localization. The geological setting of SMS deposits is determined by their position relative to the rift valley and by the types of rocks hosted (Table 1). Depending on the first parameter, SMS deposits could be localized at [ ] the axial volcanic ridge or at the flank of the rift valley. Basalts, deep-seated gabbro, and serpentinized peridotites are distinguished among the hosted rocks. The outcrops of deep-seated rocks are exposed at the flanks of the rift valley. The tectonic mechanism of the lower crust and mantle rocks exhumation process is connected with very large offsets along the detachment faults, resulting in a forming oceanic core complex (OCC) (Smith et al., 2006; MacLeod et al., 2009). The SMS related to OCCs are represented by such ore clusters as Ashadze, Logatchev, Semyenov, and some others (Table 1) and are increasing steadily in number. This fact in combination with widespread OCC formation at the slow-spreading ridges (Escartin et al., 2008) and high grades of metals in SMS related to OCCs has provoked considerable scientific and economic interest in these types of deposits. It could be mentioned in this regard that the first two applications to the International Seabed Authority for prospecting and exploration of sulfides have been submitted for the areas in the spreading centres with wide distribution of the core complexes.
