"Exampling of the tunneling task in the Tsengwen Reservoir Transbasin Diversion (TRTD) in southern Taiwan, this study investigates the application of the Drilling Survey System (DRISS) in both Drilling and Blasting (D&B)- and Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)-excavated sections. In the D&B section, a nonlinear relationship exists between drilling energy and uniaxial compressive strength of rock mass, in which a reasonable coefficient of determination can be analyzed statistically. Additionally, the DRISS accurately predicted an unfavorable section with a valuable position. The magnitude of uniaxial compressive strength back calculated using DRISS data also matches those acquired from geological investigations with different approaches. Study results indicate that the DRISS is an effective tool for fore-probing of both D&B- and TBM-excavated tunnels. INTRODUCTIONModern advancements in geological and geophysical investigations, and drilling techniques, have provided valuable information for detecting and interpreting geological conditions of rock tunnels with a resolution of several to ten of meters (Brückl et al., 2001, 2008, Lorang et al., 2005). Nevertheless, construction risks remain considerable during tunnel excavation, especially when a tunnel was excavated by a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Predictions of the local fault, shear zone, and other minor geological features, which may cause moderate collapse or excessive deformation of rocks surrounding the tunnel, before tunnel excavation is highly desirable for high-quality tunnel construction and economically efficient project management.Rather than conventional geophysical prospection methodologies, which always favor large-scale investigation with moderate precision, this study focuses on the drilling method probing ahead of a tunnel. The goal of such an investigation is not only to prevent catastrophic collapse, but also to provide quantitative or semi-quantitative information for estimation of the mechanical parameters of rock mass.For the tunneling task in the Tsengwen Reservoir Transbasin Diversion (TRTD) in southern Taiwan, a drilling survey system is adopted for fore probing. Data collected from both drilling and blasting (D&B) and TBM-excavated sections are analyzed statistically and discussed. The applications of the Drilling Survey System (DRISS) are addressed accordingly."

"Paymaster Consolidated Mines, Limited, owns several groups of claims in various parts of the Porcupine district. The area in which mining has been carried on includes parts of lots 5, 6, and 7, con. 1, Tisdale township, and twelve adjoining claims in Deloro township to the south. Highway No. 67A between South Porcupine and Timmins crosses the property.The discovery of the Dome mine in 1909 caused a rush of prospectors to the district and in a few weeks practically all territory adjacent to the Dome was staked. At that time work was started on the West Dome, West Dome Lake, Apex, and Standard properties. These were consolidated in 1930 to form the present Company. Gold was produced from the West Dome Lake from 1915 to 1930, and from the Standard-Paymaster from 1922 to 1928. The total production of the previous and present companies from 1915 to November 30, 1946, has been 487,170 oz. gold and 149,342 oz. silver from 2,337,554 tons of ore."

The effects of particle size distribution on metal extraction have been determined from pressure leaching Renzy Mines Limited concentrate with oxygen. Using a pulp density of 30 per cent solids, an oxygen pressure of 80 psig, a temperature of 230°F, a grind of 2.5 hours and a retention of 8 hours resulted in the almost complete dissolution of the nickel and the cobalt and the decomposition of over 96 per cent of the chalcopyrite finer than 20 microns. Only 11 per cent of the chalcopyrite coarser than 20 microns was reduced to smaller than 20 microns.

The level of Si and Cu in the 3xx series of alloys affects the volume fraction of the a-Al dendritic phase and the Al-Si eutectic phase. The volume fraction of these phases in turn affects the feeding conditions during solidification and ultimately the Area Fraction Porosity and Mean Pore Diameter measured in the as-cast structure. This work sets out to establish the relationship between the volume fraction of the a-Al dendritic phase and the Al-Si eutectic phase and the resulting porosity that forms on the Monotonic and High Cycle Fatigue properties. The alloys in question are the Al-9%Si-l %Cu and a Al-7%Si-4%Cu alloys which were cast into V8 performance engine block castings and then heat treated to achieve desired mechanical properties. The engine block castings provided the mechanical and metallographic test samples analyzed for this work.

"IntroductionWestar Mining Ltd. is Canada's largest producer of metallurgical coal for the export market. It currently operates two mines, the Balmer Mine at Sparwood, British Columbia producing 6 000 000 tonnes per year and the Greenhills operation at Elkford, producing 2 100000 tonnes per year. Approximately 1600 people are employed between the two mines which operate independently but share common administrative services.Like most mining companies in Canada over the past three or four years, Westar has faced rising production costs along with flat or declining prices and demand for its products. In order to survive under these conditions it has become necessary to strive for decreased costs in any way possible. Over the past two years there has been a widespread introduction of microcomputers across the company. In order to satisfy increasing demand for accurate and pertinent information while at the same time increasing productivity, the microcomputer has become an invaluable tool.This paper describes some of the problems faced by a mine maintenance department in this operating climate and how they were solved with the help of a microcomputer. It also describes some of the problems that may be encountered both with equipment and people and recommends some ways that these might be minimized or avoided. Finally, an assessment of whether or not the move to microcomputers was a current and economical one, and a brief description of future plans and projects is given.The Maintenance OrganizationIn order to appreciate fully the role that microcomputers are playing within the Maintenance Department at Westar Mining, a little background on the organization and operating philosophies is in order. Les premières pelles diesel étaient entretenues de la même façon mais pour les réparations au moteur, on devait recourir au représentant du manufacturier qui était Ie seul à avoir les compétences nécessaires.Ce n'est vraiment qu ‘après la deuxième guerre mondiale que I ‘usage de l'équipement mobile s'est répandu dans les mines à ciel ouvert pour débuter les extractions selon les méthodes que I'on connaît aujourd'hui.L'entretien de l'équipement minier de façon organisée à débute avec I ‘usage de ces machines dans nos mines. Ces machines étaient un peu primitives, petites et pas très dispendieuses a I'achat. Même si la disponibilité était basse, elles fournissaient quand même un rendement qui en ces temps était acceptable. L’organisation de I ‘entretien de cet équipèrent était assez primitif et n'occupait qu'une place secondaire aux yeux de la direction de la mine."

Bismuth is a notorious contaminant in the electrolytic refining of Cu that can cause cathodes to fail to meet ASTM International standards and not be suitable for use in Cu rod and other downstream products. Bismuth can significantly decrease electrical conductivity, decrease the mechanical strength of the annealed wire, retard recrystallization, and sometimes induce hot shortness during the hot rolling process in the production of rod. As a result, the control of Bi in the refinery tankhouse must be carefully managed. This paper describes how SuperLig® Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) is being used for Bi removal at the Birla Copper Dahej Copper refinery. The operation of the SuperLig® MRT Bi removal plant is described and data on Bi removal efficiency are presented. INTRODUCTION Hindalco’s Cu division, Birla Copper, operates one of the largest Cu refineries in the world at Dahej, Gujarat; India. The main feed for this refinery is produced at the company’s smelter. Due to its massive production capacity, this operation mainly relies on imported Cu concentrates resulting in a variety of metals being carried out as impurities in the Cu anodes because pyrometallurgical technologies alone are not enough to remove them to the extent required. Metal impurities found in Cu ores include Fe, Zn, As, Pb, Bi, and Sb. During electrorefining, less noble metals dissolve in the electrolyte gradually increasing their concentrations creating the need for electrolyte control mechanisms that remove these impurities with varying degrees of success (Wang, 2004; Navarro et al., 2013.) Bismuth is one of the most significant impurities in a Cu refinery because it has the lowest ASTM product specification. This situation is critical because the Bi potential is very close to that of Cu making it possible to plate in the Cu cathode directly. Also, Bi can precipitate at high concentrations causing floating slimes and reduction of current efficiency (Ballinas, San Miguel, Munoz, & Gyves, 2003). Production of high purity cathodes from feed stock containing a diverse range of metal impurities becomes a major challenge in the refining of Cu (Izatt et al., 2015). In this work, the purification strategy followed by Birla Copper for the removal of Bi using a separation process based on MRT is presented, outlining the loading and stripping performance of SuperLig®83 and the benefits of using MRT over other lower selectivity methods where hazardous materials are produced instead of high purity products.

An extensive Precambrian iron-formation lies about 2,000 ft. beneath post-Precambrian rocks in the Fort a Ia Corne Forest Reserve, south of Choiceland, Saskatchewan. The geology, deduced from limited drill results and from some geophysical observations, indicates that the deposit is a characteristic magnetite iron-formation, not uncommon in the exposed Precambrian of Saskatchewan, but also shows certain interesting features of faulting and pre-Paleozoic weathering which have given rise to a pre-served detrital deposit of hematite. The body is of ore grade and of sizeable proportions. T HIS paper is presented in order to set forth the interesting geological features of a Precambrian iron deposit located beneath the cover rocks of the Great Plains region and to comment upon the methods of discovery and interpretation of the nature of the body. Old iron nails are one of the most common objects which entice the general public to ask questions about the history of metallurgy. There is a lot of history in old nails - history of the manufacturing industry, and social and economic history. Nails, therefore, are fine teaching tools; whether students have to acquire metallurgical skills or explore the structure and properties of wrought iron, whether they want to look into the history of inventions and the development of machinery, studying nails tells a story better than any teacher or any book. I have used this approach often and the following note is based on several student projects, particularly the work of Carmina Herrero and Vicky Marchant. Nails, those essential metallic fasteners, have long been with us. Their size, shape and design is basically a compromise between the makers' ability to control and manipulate material and the demands of the intended application. There were copper and bronze nails in antiquity, but in this paper I want to deal only with iron nails. In Rome, iron nails were common, and Cleere carried out the fine metallographic investigations on a large stock of nails recovered from a Roman fort site in Scotland. Those nails were hand forged; sorting them at the site on the basis of length, shape of head and shape of shank (in cross section) indicated that there seemed to have been some nail standardization. It appears that the Roman smiths used a series of heading dies starting with a 1/s-in. size. Each successive size increased by approximately 1/16-in. The metallographic inspection of the microstructures of the nails showed that the smaller nails were made in the one operation; i.e. both the tapering and the formation were accomplished on the heated rod without reheating. However, in the case of the larger nails, the nail had to be reheated for the tapering after the head had been forged. Most nails were tapered on all four sides of the shank and the shanks were square in cross section; only one group had rounded shanks. Most heads were flat disks, but in one group the heads were pyramids and another group had conic heads. Figure 1 shows the procedure used to produce the pyramidal heads. Obviously, Roman nail making was sophisticated and each nail design was meant for a particular use.

Cathode wear has become an increasing challenge in the aluminum industry due to the use of more graphitized materials. Today, there exist no standard laboratory methods for measuring cathode wear where different commercial materials can be ranked. The typical average wear rate in an electrolysis cell is quite small. The aim of this work was to design a test method where the wear could be accelerated compared to industrial cells. It was focused on polarized tests where the cathode is exposed to electrolyte, which gives higher aluminium carbide solubility. The cathode materials were characterized by microscopy and image analysis.

"The first-principles method was employed to study the adsorption of hydroxyl calcium (CaOH+) and hydroxyl (OH-) on hematite and quartz surfaces. The calculation results suggested that OH- preferred to interact with the active Fe sites on the hematite surface, whereas OH- adsorbed on the quartz surface by weak hydrogen bond. Though CaOH+ could easily adsorb on the hematite and quartz surfaces by the formation of Ca-O bond, the covalence formed on the quartz surface was apparently stronger than that on the hematite surface, meaning a stronger and more stable adsorption. CaOH+ adsorbed on quartz surface was mainly through the interaction of O-2p and Ca-3d states, and this interaction on hematite surface was weaker.INTRODUCTIONIron Increase and Silicon Reduction Technology (Yu & Duan, 2002) of hematite is mainly through the reverse flotation (silica is floated away from the iron concentrate). There are two ways to achieve this (Houot, 1983). One is to collect quartz by cationic collector directly; the other is to activate quartz by lime and then collect it by anionic collector. There are two main different views with respect to the mechanism of quartz activation: mono-hydroxyl compound theory (Fuerstenau, Rice & Somasundaran, 1965; Fuerstenau & Palmer, 1976) and surface hydroxyl precipitation theory (Hu & Wang, 1988; Wang & Hu, 1990). The former indicated the formation of the mono-hydroxyl complex is one of the two criteria of quartz flotation. The later theory, on the other hand, suggested that surface precipitation is the adsorption of active species of metallic ion on quartz surface. However, most of those researches are based on the solution chemistry of flotation and little is done at the microscopic level.In this paper, by the help of first-principles calculations, the adsorption models, bonding conditions, Mulliken charge populations and adsorption energies of hydroxyl and calcium hydroxyl ions (OH- and CaOH+) on hematite (001) and quartz (100) surfaces were investigated to find out the lime activation of quartz at atomic level, which is significant for the researches of quartz activation theoretically and practically."

THE GROWTH of the major iron and steel industries on this continent and in many European countries was based on the use of as-mined, high-grade, lump iron ores and on the availability of metallurgical coking coals. The modern coke-fired blast furnace was developed for such materials and is one of the most efficient of ail pyrometallurgical processes. Most of the impure pig iron produced by blast furnaces was converted to refined steel by the Bessemer process in the years prior to 1900 but, when large quantities of low-cost steel scrap be-came available, the more flexible open hearth process was adopted by most large steel producers on this continent. Although this pro-cess has many desirable metallurgical features, the thermal efficiency is low, the capital cost is very high, and the method of charging scrap steel is inefficient by modern standards of material handling. In recent years several conditions have arisen which have stimulated the development of many new pro-cesses and the re-examination of the existing smelting and steelmaking techniques.

"Rare Earths have become critical for our energy and materials driven society. While primary production must ramp up to fill growing demands, the recycle of these strategic elements must also be initiated. This paper will outline the potentials of and metallurgical technologies employed for Rare Earths recycle from various secondary sources.INTRODUCTIONWhen investigating the recovery of rare earths from secondary sources it is necessary to understand the nature of the sources to be processed. As of 2009, the USGS reports the distribution of rare earths by end use, in decreasing order, was: chemical catalysts 22%, metallurgical applications and alloys 21%, petroleum refining catalysts 14%, automotive catalytic converters 13%, glass polishing and ceramics 9%, rare earth phosphors for computer monitors, lighting, televisions 8%, permanent magnets 7%, electronics 3%, and others 3% (USGS, 2011). Additionally, it is reported that the amount of recycling was quite small and consisted primarily of rare earth magnet scrap, although with the sharp increase in the price of rare earths, and the potential shortage in supply, focus in this area is continually growing. Thus, the opportunities, whether realistic or not, are extremely vast in the recycling of rare earth containing materials. The following subsections will present methods proposed for the recycling of rare earths based on the feed material type.RECYCLING OF RARE EARTH MAGNETSCurrently, investigations are ongoing in the area of recycling production scrap and end-of-life materials in the rare earth magnet industry. The following techniques illustrate potential methods for the recovery of rare earths from secondary RE magnet sources.Recycling of Rare Earth Magnet Sludge by Selective ChlorinationDuring the production of neodymium magnets, a by-product of production is the so called “magnetic sludge”. This by-product contains high amounts of neodymium, thus a process for the recovery of Nd has been proposed. This paper is not intended as an original contribution to this subject, but rather as a review of the main theories which are held with regard to placer deposits, with, of course, particular reference to the placers of British Columbia. The present interest in gold mining has, however, brought the subject of placers to the fore, and possibly a brief outline of the geology of such deposits will serve as a basis for discussion on the subject. In Canada, the most valuable of our placers are deposits of gold, and consequently the discussion will centre largely on placer-gold deposits. The same principles apply, of course, to placer deposits of other metals. The Origin of Placer Deposits As a starting point, the idea which is prevailingly held is that placer or alluvial gold is detrital in origin, that is to say, the gold originally existed in veins, lodes, or disseminations in the country rock of the regions in which the placer deposits are now found, and that, through the various erosive forces of nature, it was liberated from those veins or lodes and concentrated in the form in which we now find it. 1 have not time to go thoroughly into the proof of this, but the lines of evidence are many. If we take the Cariboo district as a typical example, Johnston and Uglow(l) have shown, first of all, that the placer and vein gold are identical in character. Crystals occur both in the placers and in the lodes, but the crystals in the placers are nearly always slightly worn, indicating transportation.

For improvement in the productivity of tall building projects, table formwork is one of the main methods that have been adopted for slab formwork. Because the table formwork method is an equipment-oriented construction method, the type of lifting equipment and method of operation considerably affects the productivity and cost of the table formwork. It is also important to make an equipment input plan for completing the table formwork within the time given, according to the structural construction cycle. For performing the table formwork, a tower crane or an independent lifting system, and shifting trolleys, are required. However, if an inefficient equipment input plan is made, exorbitant cost may be incurred. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the productivity of a table formwork, considering the type and number of lifting equipment and the number of trolleys inputted, and to suggest quantitative data for making a cost-efficient equipment input plan within the construction duration given. It is expected that the results of this research will be utilized as a basis for cost-efficient equipment input planning.
