An electrochemical process is described for converting concentrates of base-metal sulphides to the corresponding pure metals and elemental sulphur. The application of the process to chalcopyrite is discussed. The process is also of potential interest in processing copper-nickel sulphides, and laboratory data concerning this potential are presented. The process creates neither air nor water pollution.

A new style of tectonic map based on age of folding has been prepared for the Canadian Appalachian region as part of the Tectonic Map of Canada Project. This style of map pro-vides a clearer picture of the tectonic history of the region than any meth-od hitherto attempted. Precambrian blocks that were relatively unaffected by Palaeozoic de-formation are distinguished on the Great Northern Peninsula and in the Conception Bay region of Newfound-land. K/ A age determinations suggest that these blocks were intruded and metamorphosed during Grenville orogeny. Other Grenville-like rocks, on Cape Breton Island and in New Brunswick, were more actively involved in subsequent Palaeozoic orogeny. Taconic orogeny, the first phase of Palaeozoic deformation, took place in Middle and/or Late Ordovician time and was accompanied by intrusion of ultrabasic rocks. Evidence of the -

This paper discusses mine research at Inco, giving specific examples of research projects which illustrate the approach to mining problems. The first example covers the development of a new mining method, "undercut and fill," which was originated for mining badly broken-up pillars, but which is now rapidly replacing the square set method of pillar recovery. In the new method, ore is extracted in a series of successive horizontal cuts, progressing downward, a cut being completely mined and filled before the cut below is started. In the second example, improvements to the "cut and fill" method of mining are discussed. These improvements are the result of improved techniques and improved equipment, etc., with, in many cases, the former being made possible by the latter. The advances made have permitted the use of the "cut and fill" method at much greater depths than before. The third example is presented to illustrate research undertaken to obtain the earliest maximum advantage of the introduction of a new piece of equipment or material. For this purpose, the development of the "Under-ground use of AN /FO Blasting Agent " has been selected. Work on this project started in May, 1960, at a time when there was very little in-formation regarding the potentialities of AN /FO for underground blasting, either primary or secondary. By the end of 1961, AN /FO made up 64 per cent of the explosives used under-ground at Inco mines.

The paper describes the processes developed and piloted by Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited for recovering copper, in the form of specification copper powders, from Lynn Lake sulphidic copper concentrates and Fort Saskatchewan Refinery by-product copper sulphides. The process includes ammonia pressure leaching and hydrogen reduction from solution. Nickel and cobalt present in the con-centrates dissolve in the leach solution and a method was developed for separating these metals from the cop-per. Methods are described for con-trolling the physical properties of the copper powder produced in the reduction vessel. The chemistry of the process is briefly discussed and the effects of some of the more important process variables are described. The B. M. & S. orebodies, consisting of the No. 6 (Brunswick) and the No. 12 (Anacn Leadridgz, have the distinction of being the first major 1base metal ore deposits to be found in the Province of New Brunswick. They are massive sulphide de-posits consisting of pyrite (pre-dominantly) and base metal sulphides, and they carry values in lead, zinc, copper, and silver. These orebodies are localized within favourable drag fold structures believed to be related in their origin to external forces set up in the area subsequent to the primary regional folding. Both orebodies are characterized by the presence of magnetite 'iron formation' which, in certain 'Portions of each orebody, may be found as relics within the massive sulphides. Studies show the magnetite to be the first metallic mineral within the ore ?zones, followed by pyrite, Sphalerite, galena, and finally chakopyrite. The shape of these massive pyritk orebod:es as well as the distribution of values within them is controlled to a large degree by the ore-ore drag fold structures. A possible relationship is discussed between the basic intrusives in the area ?and the magnetite deposits. It is suggested that a large portion of ?the iron content of the massive suplhedes has been derived from the earlier magnetite. Intermittent movements in the area during the sulphide mineralization are believed to belong to the last stages of deformation in the area. These late movements may have been caused by the intrusion of the granite into the area. The granite may have a genetic relationship to the B. M. & S. orebodies.

BRITISH Guiana, Great Britain's only South American colony, may be reached by very comfortable steamers, both from North America and Europe. The trip from North American Atlantic ports requires about 12 to 14 days; that from Europe about 18 to 20 days. A number of steamship lines, including Canadian, American, and Dutch, have regular sailings between North America and British Guiana, with calls en route at various interesting ports in the West Indies and northern South America. Moreover, several lines, including British, German, and French, have steamships operating regularly between Europe and the West Indies. Indeed, so popular have the West Indian voyages become in recent years that, during the winter months, special cruises in considerable number are organized for many vessels that ply in the trans-Atlantic service in the summer. A trip to British Guiana, therefore, has become a delightful experience. After visits at the various attractive Leeward and Windward islands and Trinidad, the approach to the low, flat, British Guiana coast, with its muddy coastal waters extending for many miles offshore, is somewhat of a contrast. Arrival in Guiana waters is signalled by the appearance of the modern high-power Demerara Light, located "on a shoal about twelve miles from the mouth of Demerara river. From this point, if the tide is right, a pilot takes the steamer across the bar, eight to ten miles offshore, and into Georgetown harbour. At high tide, the water above the bar ranges from 15 to 18 feet in depth, depending on whether it is neap tide or spring tide; at low tide, the corresponding depths are 9 to 11 feet. As the bar is of soft mud, however, it is usually possible for vessels to pass over it with a draught of about two feet in excess of that indicated by the tide tables. Upon nearing the shore, one sees first the Georgetown wireless towers, then the light-house and the tall chimneys of sugar mills and of various factories in Georgetown, and finally the palms and other tropical trees and the houses of Georgetown itself along the sea shore and the east bank of Demerara river. Extensive wharves operated by various exporting and importing companies stretch along the river bank and activity prevails in Georgetown harbour. The principal exports are sugar, rice, gold, diamonds, bauxite, balata, lumber, fruit and other tropical products. The imports are food-stuffs, wearing apparel, and manufactured materials of many kinds.

Introduction As practised during the last two years at the Vipond Consolidated gold mine, mining geology has meant the application of geology to the problem of finding, developing, and mining ore. This article reviews the results attained in Vipond mining geology as thus defined. Most effort was directed toward clarifying and interpreting the tangible physical causes of vein and ore localizations, and in the following pages these questions are dealt with in considerable detail. Discernment of the influence of rock folding and deformation on the localization of veins, and of the influence of certain structures and rocks in or near carbonaceous zones on the localization of ore-bodies, have been the main practical results of the studies. Consideration of some of the geological features of the Porcupine area, and of the geology and mining experience of the principal producing mines, has helped toward a perspective of Vipond's ore-finding problems. These features are first discussed. The background and procedure for Vipond mining geology, and the major results of the geological mapping, are then summarized. Then follows a résumé of tangible factors that influenced vein, ore-body, and gold localizations; and, next, explanations of the facts ascertained. Because they were found of little utility, many fascinating problems, such as the origin and mode of emplacement of the veins and lodes(l), the ultimate source of the ore, and the physico-chemical and mechanical agencies affecting vein and ore formation, are treated cursorily or are neglected in these notes.

Northern Saskatchewan comprises an area of about 350 000 km2 and boasts some of the world's largest known high-grade uranium deposits. The successful mining of these deposits, however, can not be accomplished without overcoming technical challenges. Not only is the high grade of the uranium ore challenging, but mining methods need to be developed to deal with groundwater at very high pressures, and ground conditions that vary substantially from excellent to wholly unconsolidated clays and sand. This paper discusses the various mechanisms of inflows at the three of the Cameco Corporation Mines in Northern Saskatchewan. The risk of inflows is quantified in terms of unique challenges from hydrogeologic conditions, rockmass integrity, and uncertainty in geologic conditions. Mitigation strategies in case of an inflow are also briefly described. The paper concludes by addressing the impact of institutional rules (corporate standards) on minimizing, monitoring, and controlling the probability and/or impact of unexpected inflows.

GOLGOHAR Mining & Industrial Co., with annual production of 16 million tons, is one of the largest pelletizing and iron ore supplier in Iran that recently this year, because of using mineral processing techniques and extraction of ore body positioning between the metamorphic rocks, about 150 million tons of dry tailings has been created as a result of concentrate production. On the other hand, many environmental issues such as groundwater pollution have been developed by sulfide and silicate gangue minerals, which containing heavy metals such as mercury and arsenic. In this study, a new product with high added value has been introduced for the company by identification and extraction of industrial minerals in dry tailings. Also, by removing large masses of dry tailings, environmental pollution sources were gradually eliminated. This method can be used as a modern waste management approach in the world.

Canadian nickel-copper ore deposits have been a major source of nickel, copper, cobalt and precious metals for more than 100 years. The two main minerals of interest, pentlandite (Pn, (Ni,Fe)9S8) and chalcopyrite (Cp, CuFeS2), are usually accompanied by large quantities of pyrrhotite (Po, Fe1-xS). Until the 1950s, Po containing small amounts of nickel was routinely smelted as part of the valuable Ni concentrate. The rapid growth in Ni demand following the Second World War created impetus to treat the Po separately. This action would liberate a valuable smelting capacity for higher value Pn, allow for recovery of Ni locked in Po, convert the Fe to iron oxide or metallic iron pellets, and recover S as sulphuric acid or elemental sulphur. The roasting process also has the potential to produce energy due to the highly exothermic oxidation of Po. The Ni industry would then have a “waste-free” process. Both Inco (now Vale) and Falconbridge (now Glencore) developed processes and built large industrial plants for this purpose that operated with some success. But technical issues and tenuous economics were continual challenges. By the early 1980s these industrial operations were closed. Sophisticated froth flotation methods of rejecting Po were developed, and Po containing up to 1% Ni became a waste material reporting to the tailings stream. As part of a major study on possible processing methods of Po for both value recovery and waste remediation, this paper presents a historical perspective on Canadian Po tailings with regards to their generation, inventory, value, and attempts to process them.

To stay competitive in an open market, mineral industries have to optimise their processes, lower their production costs and improve the commercial value of their products. Up to a recent past, they were impaired in this attempt by a lack of adequate devices allowing reliable on-line and real-time process monitoring (detection or measurement). Process monitoring for process control and the product characterisation for quality control are quite different tasks. Planners and researchers should be fully aware of this when evaluating or developing monitoring equipment for on-line process control. This paper will comment on some aspects of sensor specifications, during the design and the evaluation steps, related to sampling, measurement (accuracy, sensitivity, delay and correlation to the process) and suitability to the exploitation environment. Examples of R&D projects promoted by COREM for various industrial applications will be presented.

High Definition Scanning (laser scanning) is a proven technology that is accurate to within 6mm in 50m (¼? in 150?). It can capture in excess of one million 3D point measurements in an average 2 hour scan. It has numerous applications including brown-field retrofits, bridge measurement and analysis, verifying as-built conditions, and crime scene investigation. We most commonly use it for plant design to capture current site conditions, so as to prevent interferences and problems before construction begins. All vital information is captured in the first site visit, which limits the need for extra field trips.

The successful application of color sorting machines has established sensor-based sorting in the mineral industry in recent years and is considered today as a significant innovation in processing technology. However, we are only at the beginning of (market) introduction. New sensor systems have been developed, which exploit material properties such as electrical conductivity, magnetization, molecular structure, thermal conductivity etc. This opens up new exciting pre-concentration and upgrading possibilities for many applications such as nickel, gold, copper and other ores as well as for industrial minerals, diamonds and other gem stones.

Cytec has developed a new organophosphorus based solvent extraction (SX) reagent for rare earth separations. The new product, CYANEX® 572, has been formulated to allow efficient extraction while minimizing the strip acid requirements. The optimization of formulation strength is expected to significantly reduce the operating costs of these circuits. Modeling capabilities for CYANEX® 572 (similar to those used successfully in Cu and Co/Ni SX) have also been developed to aid in the design and optimization of the SX circuits. Simulations will be shown comparing CYANEX® 572 to a traditional rare earth extractant.

AERIAL survey methods have made enormous technical advances and gained new recognition since World War II. Before enlarging on this statement and reviewing some of the uses of aerial survey in industrial development it is important to de-fine what is meant by "aerial survey". The subject will be discussed in the broadest sense and references will be made to the four sections that compose the overall field of surveying operations from the air. These are: 1. Aerial photography and photo-graphic mapping. 2. The use of airborne electronic instruments for geodetic distance measurement and the determination of ground elevations. 3. In mining, as in other business and engineering enterprises, efficient operation depends upon how well and how quickly the lines of communication can function. Mines have used the telephone on and between levels for many years, but in the hoisting shaft maintenance of physical wire connections for communication with the moving cage or skip has been found, for all practical purposes, impossible. A most natural solution was, therefore, the code-bell or buzzer signal system between fixed levels, and this has been standard practice throughout the mining world for many years. However, this system has serious limitations which make it impossible to signal a cage between levels in the shaft, and it requires crude, hazardous or costly methods for signalling during daily shaft inspection. Radio signalling overcomes these difficulties, because the communication medium is never broken and the cage-tender or shaft inspector can safely signal to, and receive signals from, the hoistman at any time from any position in the shaft, whether stationary or in motion. In addition to both audible and visual code signalling, two-way telephone communication and slack cable alarm are facilities made possible in recent commercially developed equipment.
